From the Washington Post:

Is your spin class too young, too thin and too white?

By Lavanya Ramanathan March 18 at 7:00 AM

Style

After a few committed months of hot yoga at a studio in New York, Christina Rice had found her niche. So when the studio announced that it was offering teacher training, she signed right up.

It was only when she arrived with her mat that she noticed something striking.

There were 54 other women and men in the 10-week course, and not one of them looked like her. She was the lone African American in the class.

“I did bond with some of the other students,” says Rice. “But I did feel very isolated at times. There were no teachers of color. I didn’t have another woman who looked like me, who understood my struggles, my insecurities.”

Boutique workout studios — specialized, exercise-specific gyms — are exploding in gentrifying urban areas. They include not only hot yoga but also CrossFit, which is everywhere; Barry’s Bootcamp (in Los Angeles, Nashville and Washington, along with other major cities); SoulCycle (nearly 20 markets); or Orangetheory (hundreds of studios nationwide).

They are the modern answer to the sprawling, soulless gym, which insists on financial commitment but doesn’t really care whether you actually work out. …

Fads are helpful in fitness because they give hope.

And like Rice, other fitness junkies have begun to notice who isn’t coming. Sweat through a class in one of these studios and it’s very possible that you’ll see it, too: many, many lithe young white bodies and very few people of color. Or older or heavier exercisers.

If race is just a social construct and appearance is just a surface difference, shouldn’t all the women in the class understand her struggle and insecurities? Why is she so racist against White people?

There were no teachers of color. I didn’t have another woman who looked like me, who understood my struggles, my insecurities.”

Racist about White people? Ok, but root of it to me is, "Who gives a shit about YOUR struggles?", my quotation. Who gives a tinker's damn about ANYONE'S struggles? Does this twit understand me and my struggles, as a man, as a father, as a worker in this tyranny of PC? No one can help my struggles, nor would I ask them to, I figure they're too busy with their own. Struggles are the human condition. Best at managing struggles and stress win the game.

Go teach, if that's your value, Rice. Make your money, go home, shut up. We don't care about your 'struggles', LEAST of all, the White women you 'teach', they also, really, really don't care, even less than I. After all, the White feminist woman is about to be replaced by Black and Hispanic women. AI will replace you all. Meanwhile, Black women practically OWN the joint. If you have struggles, you better work it out like the rest of us. And see if you can get a few of your Black female contemporaries into YOUR class, Rice, there's an advocacy for you to push. They certainly could use the exercise.
    , @Olorin
What I don't understand is how she mistook the "spin class" for an Adult Child of Congenital Narcissists encounter group where she gets the fattest talking stick, doubling as a truncheon.

Reading comprehension problems in the course catalogue? Or simply an aging prima plumperina who gets off on making more mating-prime gals feel bad to get even?

Admittedly I have no idea what "spin class" is, nor want to. The gals who converge upon Rancho Olorin tend to wrangle horses/cattle, ski, pursue logging, hunting, deep-sea fishing, climbing, skeet/trap, do wilderness S&R, cut and bale hay and such...and don't think of it as exercise per se. The likes of Lavanya Ramanathan wouldn't advance her resume by recording them bitching about their chosen endeavors in lieu of, you know, just, like, doing them and shutting up about it.

Which is likely related to why not one of them TMK reads WaPo.

For most normal humans, it's far more motivating to get out of the house and exercise in a crowd. Even when you don't speak to fellow exercisers, it's just more energizing at an animal level.

Old and fat people are not good for business.

Most clubs will take anyone's money. The staff tend to like the clients and be sympathetic with people out of shape trying to get into shape. Older and fatter people tend to be less motivated to exercise regularly.

I see plenty of black/brown people as well as old and some fast people doing Spin, Yoga, Les Mills, CrossFit. Good for them. Some of the gym owners I know are black or half black. They are great guys. But generally yes, the fitness crowd is much whiter than the population. Even at the black owned gyms. I am race-blind about fitness and health. I don't like this white bashing. The government can give poor people free housing, food, and even government jobs. It's harder to make people eat healthy diets and exercise regularly.
    , @anonymous
How do you do hot yoga on a regular basis and still remain overweight? And if you do, is that something the other yogaists should have to worry about? I doubt there's a lot of overt hostility to fat, out of shape people -- but getting/remaining fit is kind of the main reason most people go to a work out facility.

Another reason is to meet people. And most people seek out people who are similar to them in age fitness level, etc. It's like complaining that a nightclub catering to hip twentysomethings is packed with hip twentysomtehings and I, as a unhip 62 year old don't feel so good about myself when i go there 4 nights a week.

This Indian subcontinental female columnist is writing about a black woman who feels out of place due to the presence of so many thin, white women. See below quotes.

I didn’t have another woman who looked like me, who understood my struggles, my insecurities.”

And like Rice, other fitness junkies have begun to notice who isn’t coming. Sweat through a class in one of these studios and it’s very possible that you’ll see it, too: many, many lithe young white bodies and very few people of color. Or older or heavier exercisers.

One gets the sense that the columnist is insecure about her body. She feels like all these thin, young white women are "hotter" than her and resents that.

Seems like this is a good opportunity for quoting Sailer's Law of Female Journalism.

The most heartfelt articles by female journalists tend to be demands that social values be overturned in order that, Come the Revolution, the journalist herself will be considered hotter-looking.

From my experience, lots of American-raised Indian subcon women strongly prefer dating white men rather than their fellow Indian men. Perhaps some of this columnist's resentment comes because White Chads aren't giving her the time of day.

His place is quite diverse (too much for my taste; I wait in the quiet car during his classes rather than sit in the odoriferous waiting area with the vibrant parents). The Cross Fit patrons (who are often out running during clement weather) are almost all White. The yoga women are all cookie-cutter copies of SWPL stereotypes – a handful of Asians among lots of whippet-thin blondes. As much as I’ve read that yoga is excellent for stretching and balance, I could never make myself go to a class – too much “muh spiritual wisdom of the East” and yuppie vibes for my taste. I much prefer lifting in a larger, impersonal gym with a lack of claques of women yapping instead of exercising.

That's true, but I think that people who don't fit the mold will be made to feel unwelcome. There are even gyms in New York which charge more if you are over 40. Perhaps the gyms would the defend the practice as a type of financial aid, but I think the real purpose is that they want to attract a young clientele. On the theory that this will enhance the gym's cache.

It's sort of like women's clothing stores which don't stock clothes for fat women. They know that their success depends on how the brand is perceived. And if stylish attractive women walk in and see fat unattractive women shopping there, they will turn around and leave.

What's funny is that fat women often complain that the hip stores don't offer clothes for them, but one can ask why those women don't just shop at plus-size stores like Lane Bryant. The answer is that fat women are also turned off when they walk into the store and see lots of unattractive women shopping there.
    , @carol
    Thanks for the 'splainin.

I was being a bit ironic. In my area at least it seems the gyms are gentrifying into the thin SWPL enclaves described in the article.

Y’all are way smarter than me, but I bet I’m the only one here who was ever asked to play on an all-black team (both basketball and baseball) So let me clue you in on something: the main reason black people, including women, don’t engage in the type of exercise that whites seeking thinness do is because black life is dangerous, and being bulky helps discourage others from messing with you. I once knew a cousin of NFL HOF’er Kenny Easley. This guy was about 5’8″1/2, 212. He once said to me, “you don’t know what it’s like – I used to have guys your size (170) picking on me.”

And these are the same people who still can't understand how Trump won...

And, that…what you just wrote, is the most horrible thing of all. There is a slow and steady drum-beat for a war between the USA Neos and Alpha Putin, yet silly women (and many silly men) write articles like this!!!

Some people just won’t admit that their body sucks and they are just well, average..but if the world burns, so what?

The best thing about immigration is that the snooty white and Jewish ladies that used to write these articles are being displaced by snooty South Asians. Lavanya is from the Sanskrit लावण्य (lāvaṇya, “beauty”). See what Lavanya looks like @ https://twitter.com/lalamasala

I don't get the old part. It seems to me older people transition from the gym to the senior center. I don't remember seeing many plus sizes at the YMCA.

She feels like all these thin, young white women are “hotter” than her and resents that.

Seems like this is a good opportunity for quoting Sailer’s Law of Female Journalism.

The most heartfelt articles by female journalists tend to be demands that social values be overturned in order that, Come the Revolution, the journalist herself will be considered hotter-looking.

From my experience, lots of American-raised Indian subcon women strongly prefer dating white men rather than their fellow Indian men. Perhaps some of this columnist’s resentment comes because White Chads aren’t giving her the time of day.

I kinda doubt it; I think there's a reason PUA's like Roosh and Roissy don't go to spin or yoga classes to meet girls.

I'm not an expert, but I think there are a few problems. First, women are extremely sensitive to the judgment of their perceived peers. They are afraid to be seen by their peers talking to a man who might be judged by the group to be a "creep" or a "weirdo." In the setting of a yoga or spin class, it's impossible to have a conversation with someone without everyone else in the group seeing it. Therefore, if you are a man, unless you are extremely physically attractive, women in a spin or yoga class won't want to have anything to do with you. If you are extremely physically attractive, a girl in the class won't worry as much about being judged for talking to you. But in that case, there's no need to take a yoga class to meet girls.

Second, if a girl sees a man hit on another girl and get blown off, it dramatically lowers his sexual marketplace value in her eyes. Girls are not big on exercising independent judgment and tend to rely heavily on the judgment of other people. So if you are a man in a yoga class with 20 girls, you get only 1 chance, not 20.

Third, if you are a student in a spin or yoga class, you are in a position of low social status compared to the teacher. Girls will see you following the teacher's instructions and subconsciously put you in the "serf" category. This is a problem because girls have a hypergamy instinct. They are turned off by men of low social status.

Last, if a man shows up at a yoga or spin class, the girls there will tend to be suspicious of his motivations. If they think he is there to pick up girls, then they will likely think he is a loser who can't meet women through normal means, which is also a turnoff.

Lots of men have the idea of taking a class in a female dominated pursuit such as yoga in order to meet girls, but I've never heard of it actually working for anyone. Perhaps it might work if you went with an attractive female friend.

Kind of confirms the common notion that women generally are prone to be jealous of one another and engage in catty behavior. This one dislikes the lighter skinned women who are higher on the totem pole of valuation. They’re blonde and what’s more slim. The nerve of them, being more attractive than our darker Ramanathan. Besides, people usually take spin classes to stay in shape or to get into shape so slimness is obviously a desired state of being. Hair dye sales don’t seem to be flagging, either. It’s also rather confusing. Why are whites being slammed merely for showing up to accomplish something when it’s the darker types who are the ones who are derelict by not bothering to come out but are rather sitting at home eating potato chips?

How do you do hot yoga on a regular basis and still remain overweight? And if you do, is that something the other yogaists should have to worry about? I doubt there’s a lot of overt hostility to fat, out of shape people — but getting/remaining fit is kind of the main reason most people go to a work out facility.

Another reason is to meet people. And most people seek out people who are similar to them in age fitness level, etc. It’s like complaining that a nightclub catering to hip twentysomethings is packed with hip twentysomtehings and I, as a unhip 62 year old don’t feel so good about myself when i go there 4 nights a week.

    Do you have a cite?

According to these guys, working off the 2010 Census data, Indian-Americans are the most endogamous of the Asian ethnic groups, and out marriage is similar (and tiny) when considering all Indians in the US, but for US raised Indians, women outmarry about 20% more (at 50-50) than the men. Indian women are 50% more likely to marry whites (38%) than the men (26%). Indian men are about 50% more likely than the women to marry other Asians or Hispanics. Indian women--predictably--way more like to marry blacks.

She has another problem. The internet says she's 33 years old which looks about right. The competition is getting younger and better-looking, like they always do.

Columns like this authored by women in their 30s and 40s pop up pretty regularly. Women aren't told to leverage their peak sexual attractiveness, fit their husband with a pair of wife-goggles, and have his babies. What are we going to do with all these single, angry women in 10 and 20 years?

Well, why join one of those clubs if you don’t look fabulous? I spin in the basement.

Most clubs will take anyone’s money

That’s true, but I think that people who don’t fit the mold will be made to feel unwelcome. There are even gyms in New York which charge more if you are over 40. Perhaps the gyms would the defend the practice as a type of financial aid, but I think the real purpose is that they want to attract a young clientele. On the theory that this will enhance the gym’s cache.

It’s sort of like women’s clothing stores which don’t stock clothes for fat women. They know that their success depends on how the brand is perceived. And if stylish attractive women walk in and see fat unattractive women shopping there, they will turn around and leave.

What’s funny is that fat women often complain that the hip stores don’t offer clothes for them, but one can ask why those women don’t just shop at plus-size stores like Lane Bryant. The answer is that fat women are also turned off when they walk into the store and see lots of unattractive women shopping there.

Group exercise instructors totally know they can make guests feel welcome or unwelcome with simple social cues. Simple greetings and smiles make guests feel welcome and deliberate ignoring makes guests feel unwelcome.

I observe most fitness instructors seem to be very genuine about making everyone feel welcome. They seem to enjoy it. They focus on people who might not feel welcome: people who are new, people who are out of shape, or people who struggle with the workouts. The instructors don't want to be everyone's friend. Most people just exercise and leave.

I've been to one group exercise place that made me feel unwelcome; I suspect it was because I am male, and while they officially allow men, the instructor passively made men feel less welcome, which is annoying, but no loss, there are dozens of other great options.

The unfortunate reality is that the world cares less about older, fatter, unattractive people; this goes well beyond gyms and fitness. Actually, the more accurate reality is most people are just focused on their own selfish needs, and they ignore others who don't meet those needs. And older, fatter people are simply less desirable for the needs of others. That's life and it's not so terrible if you set up your life well. Almost no one has the perfect life others imagine, not even the thin, young, and wealthy, who have tons of problems of their own.

If race is just a social construct and appearance is just a surface difference, shouldn't all the women in the class understand her struggle and insecurities? Why is she so racist against White people?

Does this twit understand me and my struggles, as a man, as a father, as a worker in this tyranny of PC? No one can help my struggles, nor would I ask them to, I figure they’re too busy with their own. Struggles are the human condition. Best at managing struggles and stress win the game.

ALL men prefer white women, except for white men, who are hated by white women. (You can thank several decades of mass media programming for that.) White men increasingly prefer Asian women.

I didn’t have another woman who looked like me, who understood my struggles, my insecurities.”

If race is just a social construct and appearance is just a surface difference, shouldn't all the women in the class understand her struggle and insecurities? Why is she so racist against White people?

What I don’t understand is how she mistook the “spin class” for an Adult Child of Congenital Narcissists encounter group where she gets the fattest talking stick, doubling as a truncheon.

Reading comprehension problems in the course catalogue? Or simply an aging prima plumperina who gets off on making more mating-prime gals feel bad to get even?

Admittedly I have no idea what “spin class” is, nor want to. The gals who converge upon Rancho Olorin tend to wrangle horses/cattle, ski, pursue logging, hunting, deep-sea fishing, climbing, skeet/trap, do wilderness S&R, cut and bale hay and such…and don’t think of it as exercise per se. The likes of Lavanya Ramanathan wouldn’t advance her resume by recording them bitching about their chosen endeavors in lieu of, you know, just, like, doing them and shutting up about it.

Which is likely related to why not one of them TMK reads WaPo.

This article made me think of the time a black Lululemon employee murdered her white co-worker.

In an after-hours confrontation apparently sparked by Norwood’s attempt to steal a pair of yoga pants, authorities said, she bludgeoned, choked and stabbed Murray, using at least five weapons to inflict more than 330 separate wounds. Then she gave herself a few minor wounds, bound her own hands and ankles in a restroom, and initially fooled detectives with an elaborate tale about a pair of masked intruders.

Until the coverup unraveled a few days later, police considered Norwood a victim of two killers on the loose, and fear reigned on the upscale streets of Bethesda Row.

Word around town was that the white chick had it coming, because she was a demanding boss, or had racist thoughts like they all do. Didn’t you see that movie Get Out? I swear, you can just see the racism in wypipo eyes nowadays, they don’t even have to say or do anything. We can tell.

There was a YMCA, then a YWCA, then a YHMA and YHWA in areas where there were enough Jews to bother. YMCAs in most major towns had residential facilities as well as gym and sports facilities and often swimming pools. They got out of the residential thing in the eighties and nineties, but in the sixties and seventies the residential places were increasingly notorious for attracting an active gay clientele, hence the famous Village People disco song "Y-M-C-A".

Well, why join one of those clubs if you don’t look fabulous? I spin in the basement.

    Thanks for the ‘splainin.

I was being a bit ironic. In my area at least it seems the gyms are gentrifying into the thin SWPL enclaves described in the article.

The instructors don’t want to be everyone’s friend. Most people just exercise and leave.

I’ve been to one group exercise place that made me feel unwelcome; I suspect it was because I am male, and while they officially allow men, the instructor passively made men feel less welcome, which is annoying, but no loss, there are dozens of other great options.

The unfortunate reality is that the world cares less about older, fatter, unattractive people; this goes well beyond gyms and fitness. Actually, the more accurate reality is most people are just focused on their own selfish needs, and they ignore others who don’t meet those needs. And older, fatter people are simply less desirable for the needs of others. That’s life and it’s not so terrible if you set up your life well. Almost no one has the perfect life others imagine, not even the thin, young, and wealthy, who have tons of problems of their own.

I basically agree, but I would add that there are other people in the equation besides the group exercise instructor (who do tend to be positive, welcoming people). There are the other people in the group exercise class as well as the gym management.

I'm pretty confident that if I -- as a middle-aged man -- went to your typical yoga or spin class in NYC which is full of young fit women, the reception I got from the desk clerk would be cool and my classmates would be downright frosty. Probably it would be almost as bad for a middle-aged woman, especially if she were overweight.

The unfortunate reality is that the world cares less about older, fatter, unattractive people; Actually, the more accurate reality is most people are just focused on their own selfish needs, and they ignore others who don’t meet those needs.

I basically agree with this and anyway, there is a certain justice in the situation. If you are old/fat/ugly, the obvious solution to rejection by the fit young hotties is to hang out with other people who are old/fat/ugly. If you prefer to hang out with the fit young hotties, you can hardly blame them for having the same preference.

  98. I don’t really think this is an instance of the sailor law is female journalism because she isn’t complaining about how the beauty standards need to change because she isn’t beautiful. But more importantly, she isn’t representing a perspective that any south Asian women share. Zero south Asian women want more black women in their gym. Zero south Asian women seek out towns or gyms or schools with high black populations so that more people will look sort of like them.

This is a journalist doing what her Jewish overlords want her to do, and she does it because it pays off. She represents a non existent in real life sentiment that women of color want solidarity with each other. In reality, 99% of south Asian women who work out prefer to do so in places where there are few to no black women, and basically all south Asian women have long ago gotten used to the fact that they are 1% of America and they don’t see someone who looks like them in many places.

For some young men, it may be a consideration. But there are other reasons, such as enjoying the benefits of having a wife by cohabiting rather than marrying; waiting until they are older to have children; fearing that marriage will require too many changes and compromises; and facing few social pressures to marry.
    , @Flip
Unilateral no-fault divorce is really a problem. I've had friends who go home and are stunned to hear their wives telling them out of the blue that they are getting divorced, and then they end up having to pay for her and the kids and her new boyfriend. If is a marriage contract, one side shouldn't be able to break it without suffering a penalty.

They don't really, though. They're unhappy to be sure; no man that they can possibly hope to acquire is good enough for them, after all. But in the end, they find a sucker to put a ring on it more often than not, and live out the rest of their days happier than most of us in this comment section. There is no just comeuppance in store for them -- that's a manosphere fantasy.

Indian American men have a higher outmarriage rate than Indian American women. Look it up!

Indian women–predictably–way more like to marry blacks.

Marriage continues to decline particularly as young men are made aware of what a losing proposition it is for them. Hopefully the bags can serve as a warning to the next generation of young women- feminists die lonely, choose young & stay loyal for life.

“Marriage continues to decline particularly as young men are made aware of what a losing proposition it is for them.”

For some young men, it may be a consideration. But there are other reasons, such as enjoying the benefits of having a wife by cohabiting rather than marrying; waiting until they are older to have children; fearing that marriage will require too many changes and compromises; and facing few social pressures to marry.

Unilateral no-fault divorce is really a problem. I’ve had friends who go home and are stunned to hear their wives telling them out of the blue that they are getting divorced, and then they end up having to pay for her and the kids and her new boyfriend. If is a marriage contract, one side shouldn’t be able to break it without suffering a penalty.

The new climbing gym opening in Downtown Memphis next month will not have this problem:

"For too long, rock climbing hasn’t been accessible to underserved communities because most climbing gyms are built in America’s wealthiest zip codes."

    https://www.memphisrox.com/donation

After reading that drivel, it is clear to me that downtown Memphis is in the midst of gentrification. If they had tried to build that rock wall in Los Angeles’s Boyle Heights, the Mexicans would have run them out of the neighborhood with pitchforks and torches.

They don’t really, though. They’re unhappy to be sure; no man that they can possibly hope to acquire is good enough for them, after all. But in the end, they find a sucker to put a ring on it more often than not, and live out the rest of their days happier than most of us in this comment section. There is no just comeuppance in store for them — that’s a manosphere fantasy.

  119. When I was young and single I joined pricey gyms to increase the pool of men I could meet. If I was young and single now I’d target a crossfit or climbing gym to meet guys. Even being young, white, and single, which according to that article should be enough to get you into our whites-only exclusive club of The Perfect Life, then you wonder whether you are pretty or hot enough compared to the other patrons. You can let your insecurities dictate your life or you can push beyond them. Unfortunately, people seem to get the former message now – let them dictate your life and make it other people’s problems, too. Now that I’m married with kids I belong to my suburban local chain gym that costs me $25/month, definitely skews towards the middle aged and above but is fairly racially (but not socioeconomically) diverse. Our spin class was fairly diverse: mostly MILFs, of course, since spin is hard work, but some chubby people and older people – there was an 85 year asian lady who spun four times a week for years with us – I thought she was 30 years younger she was so energetic. I’ve done groupons at local spin and barre studios, to try something different, and have felt out of place with all the thin rich mommies, but I tried not to let that bug me. Recently, one of my mommy friends lured a trainer away from her studio and we pay him cash under the table for semi-private morning classes with our other non-threatening mom friends at a local muscle gym that we usually have to ourselves. It’s seriously the best way to go. As people in the comments in that article have noted, it’s the instructor who will make or break any class for you. If they know their stuff and make you feel welcome then you’ll likely come back.

@95 Brutusale: "Any gym charging more than $30/month will have the sistas outnumbered by the bruthas about 5-1. The bruthas pay the premium to meet in-shape white wimmens."

Actually, it appears the white wimmins pay for the attention of the bruthas - every damned gym I've been to (and I've joined/quit a bunch of them trying to escape the hordes) features Negro "personal trainers" and their coterie of blonde "students." Very little exercise actually occurs, but lots of personal attention is tendered - on both sides.

What does it actually cost to find a gym that's diversity free? I don't mean a boutique spin or yoga place, I mean where one can personally work out (don't care for most classes) in peace in a White environment? I'm still looking, but if such a place exists it's out of my price range. Meanwhile, I carry a can of air freshener in my gym bag to zap the subcontinentals with - true story.

At my gym, the $75/month keeps the riff-raff factor quite low, but there’s a basketball court so there will be blacks. Look for a club without any courts. Or a place like this:

YMCA is no longer an acronym -- neither are ARC, AARP, or SAT. "Judeo-Christian" is simply a term that a racist and anti-Semitic United States created during World War II to separate itself from Nazi Germany.

Judaism is a small minority religion that needs its own organization to help keep Jews in the faith. The YMCA still has Christmas parties and Easter egg hunts. In 2014, the Norwegian YMCA called for a boycott of goods and services from Israel and Israeli occupied settletments until Isreal followed up on UN resolutions and ended its occupation of Palestine. The World Alliance of YMCAs has been calling for a free Palestine since 1989.

Haha, i used to frequent the YMCA when my kids were growing up and the whole organization is a SJW-fest. ADL posters hanging up and constant campaigns for inclusiveness. See, in Philly they already had a YWCA and something we called the Jewish Y as kids thats maybe a JCC (I'd have to check), so what will the Ymca change its name to in a quest for inclusiveness? I vote for APSA...All age People's Secular Association. Sounds like something from the Soviet Union but at least it won't offend anyone...except Chriatian men but who cares about them honestly? I can't imagine the Village People singing about it though.

There was a YMCA, then a YWCA, then a YHMA and YHWA in areas where there were enough Jews to bother. YMCAs in most major towns had residential facilities as well as gym and sports facilities and often swimming pools. They got out of the residential thing in the eighties and nineties, but in the sixties and seventies the residential places were increasingly notorious for attracting an active gay clientele, hence the famous Village People disco song “Y-M-C-A”.

No, I am correct. For you (and most WNs), 99% of your gripe is that white women correctly see you as substandard and want nothing to do with you.

There is no depth to your ideology other than "waaaah...I want white women to be forced to marry Peterike as a bottom-tier white omega male".

More seriously, maybe she should more somewhere more diverse in the socio-economic bracket of people who actually go to the gym? My old gym in the suburbs of Vancouver was 1/2 Chinese, 1/4 East Indian, and the remaining quarter mostly white with a couple black folks as well.

She could always bring a friend.

    If she had one.

People who complain all the time don't exactly draw people to them.

And if she had any to bring, she might well get rewarded. A lot of gyms seem to do the “get a friend to sign up and get a month free” sort of deal.

But then what would she whine about?

I basically agree, but I would add that there are other people in the equation besides the group exercise instructor (who do tend to be positive, welcoming people). There are the other people in the group exercise class as well as the gym management.

I’m pretty confident that if I — as a middle-aged man — went to your typical yoga or spin class in NYC which is full of young fit women, the reception I got from the desk clerk would be cool and my classmates would be downright frosty. Probably it would be almost as bad for a middle-aged woman, especially if she were overweight.

Sounds like a way to meet chicks.

I kinda doubt it; I think there’s a reason PUA’s like Roosh and Roissy don’t go to spin or yoga classes to meet girls.

I’m not an expert, but I think there are a few problems. First, women are extremely sensitive to the judgment of their perceived peers. They are afraid to be seen by their peers talking to a man who might be judged by the group to be a “creep” or a “weirdo.” In the setting of a yoga or spin class, it’s impossible to have a conversation with someone without everyone else in the group seeing it. Therefore, if you are a man, unless you are extremely physically attractive, women in a spin or yoga class won’t want to have anything to do with you. If you are extremely physically attractive, a girl in the class won’t worry as much about being judged for talking to you. But in that case, there’s no need to take a yoga class to meet girls.

Girls will see you following the teacher’s instructions and subconsciously put you in the “serf” category. This is a problem because girls have a hypergamy instinct. They are turned off by men of low social status.

Last, if a man shows up at a yoga or spin class, the girls there will tend to be suspicious of his motivations. If they think he is there to pick up girls, then they will likely think he is a loser who can’t meet women through normal means, which is also a turnoff.

Lots of men have the idea of taking a class in a female dominated pursuit such as yoga in order to meet girls, but I’ve never heard of it actually working for anyone. Perhaps it might work if you went with an attractive female friend.
