From Vanity Fair:

THE GREAT WHITE NOPE

Have We Finally Reached a Breaking Point on Hollywood Whitewashing?

English actor Charlie Hunnam will be playing a famous Mexican-American crime lord.

by JOANNA ROBINSON
JANUARY 25, 2016 1:25 PM

In the midst of one of the biggest diversity uproars in Hollywood history, Legendary Studios has announced that blond-haired, blue-eyed English actor Charlie Hunnam would be playing real-life Mexican-American drug lord Edgar Valdez Villarreal. This, a Los Angeles Times headline reads, “is exactly what’s wrong with Hollywood.” With backlash to the Hunnam casting coming so loudly and so quickly, have we finally reached a breaking point with Hollywood’s whitewashing issue?

It’s interesting that barely anybody objects to all the English and Australian actors taking roles as American characters. A few African-American actors like Samuel L. Jackson have objected to the flood of English-raised black actors — some of whom are good, some of whom, cough, John Boyega, cough, are pretty useless — taking American roles from black Americans. But white American actors objecting to losing white American roles to white British Commonwealth actors is of no concern to anybody.

I blogged about Texas-born, green-eyed Edgar Valdez Villarreal back in 2010 as an example of my theory that the rise in criminal opportunities in Mexico in the quarter century since Pablo Escobar’s death in Colombia has tended to reverse the flow of bad guys. It used to be that if you were born in Mexico and looked forward to a life of crime, you’d head for the U.S. for its richer victims and more liberal criminal justice system. By the 1990s, however, Mexico was attracting American-born no-goodniks like “Barbie.” From the New York Times in 2010:

U.S. Student Became Mexican Drug Kingpin

By JAMES C. McKINLEY Jr. and ELISABETH MALKIN SEPT. 8, 2010

LAREDO, Tex. — The other children in his middle-class suburb teased him by calling him Barbie because of his looks, which reminded them of a Ken doll. The name stuck, and three decades later it would become associated with sadistic gangland slayings.

Few people who knew Edgar Valdez Villarreal back when he was a square-jawed football star at United High School here would have pegged him as likely to become one of Mexico’s most feared and savage drug leaders. None of the clichéd roots of crime could be seen is his youth: no broken home, no abusive father, no poverty.

Instead, his father was a shop owner in downtown Laredo who emphasized church, hard work and the value of a college education. He grew up in a well-appointed brick home with a wooden swing set in the backyard. Most of his siblings went to college and started businesses, becoming the sort of law-abiding people who are the mortar of society, neighbors and relatives said.

“He chose that road,” said his older brother, Abel Valdez Jr. “We are a good family.”

But, who cares what this criminal looks like and how that ties into what makes his story interesting?

We must instead cast an authentically non-Caucasian Chicano movie star, like, say, Diego Luna.

Oh, wait, Diego Luna isn’t non-Caucasian?

And he’s not Chicano?

This is getting complicated …

  2. Everyone hates Chicanos (who are “mestizo Mexican nationalists born in America, but who refuse to move to Mexico, preferring that Mexico should come to them”). Mexicans complain about Chicanos all the time on 4chan. It’s something like being Irish and encountering a Bostonian Sinn Fein supporter.
    ______
OT can we reverse the normalization of porn by reporting every porn star who commits suicide?

    http://boards.4chan.org/r9k/thread/42398726

Not certified suicide yet but it sure looks like it (alone for holidays after boyfriend committed suicide). The family is asking for public/fan help with funeral expenses. That’s not as bad as it sounds because porn “stars” nowadays make nothing and this girl (whom I had not heard of) was not in it very long.

I read that Vanity Fair article, and it mentions an earlier controversy in which a Dane, Nikolas Coster-Waldau, and a Scot, Gerald Butler, were cast as the Egyptian Gods Horus and Set, respectively. Apparently Lionsgate issued an apology for this. But the apology does not even mention the true travesty. Take a look:
Horus:Set:Do these look like mono-species persons? It is NOT OK to cast a mono-species person as a bi-species person! It is the year 2018!
Any competent casting director could have found many qualified bi-species persons to play these parts. Due to the historical patterns of discrimination in Hollywood, many are employed in fields other than acting, but mono-species persons need to examine their privilege and stop making excuses. Bi-species persons, and poly-species persons, and people who identify in many other ways regarding their species identity can be found if you TRY. Just F****** TRY, A*******! I think many of them are employed at Google.

  4. Lefties always act as if they are the experts on matters of race, diversity, multiculturalism, etc. They frequently point out that American is a nationality which should not connote a white or European person. They even take glee now in pointing out that even in Europe one cannot automatically equate white with European.

But when it comes third world nations, especially new world ones like Mexico, they seem incapable of any nuance on the matter. To them every Mexican is brown as if Mexican were a race instead of a nationality.

Try to explain that the Mexican elite are either German or Conquistador (White) descended and lefties usually make a face like they just had an aneurysm. Unless they are, of course, "woke" on Mexican history, and they will condescendingly explain that of course it's like that because whites brought racism to Mexico and created that caste system and hold down the poor brown and red folk. I've heard some claim that it was actually the English who forced the Mexicans to create such a caste system, otherwise the English wouldn't trade with them.
    , @AndrewR
If leftists were intelligent, humble, curious and knowledgeable about the world, they wouldn't be leftists. Current year leftism fundamentally requires arrogance, an aversion to independent thought, and Crimestop: the reflexive ability to ignore any information that might lead to Badthink. A closely related and strongly encouraged, yet non-mandatory, trait is a general lack of curiosity about the world.
    , @yaqub the mad scientist
And nothing gives these people confusion like Creoles-those mixed people who tend to operate at the top or near-top of post colonial societies: the Afro-Anglo Eric Holder's, the Afro-Franco Beyonce's, the Anglo-Jewish-Afro Bob Marley's, the Ibero-Celt Che Guevara's.
    , @neutral
My own anecdotal experience is that all leftists have close to zero understanding on population group numbers in their own country let alone the rest of the world. The cleverer leftists like Ezra Klein probably do know about demographics and ethnicity, but they don't ever convey these facts to the general leftist audience, so when these "woke" common leftists spout their ignorance they sincerely believe what they are saying. It's not an act for them, they are absolutely convinced they are right on such matters.

This reminds me of a bit of news lately, where former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori was pardoned by current Peruvian Pedro Kuczynski.
Fujimori looks like he could be a Japanese Prime Minister. Kuczynski looks like a German or German-American CEO.

My favorite leftist hypocrisy is when people use the term "white savior", often rather dubiously to describe any fish out of water movie, but then turn around and advocate what might more honestly be termed " white saviorism" to the hilt in public policy.

We can fix Detroit, if only we invest more in education! (Because, after all, the people there are incapable of helping themselves). Ditto Africa. We must let everyone into our countries ( because they are incapable of building their own).

I think she will get called out for playing the Cocaine Godmother, however, because it's The Current Year. I'm sure the nervous studio heads are all having meetings on how to deal with that fall out.

Sigh. It makes me long for the days when Charlton Heston played a Mexican, with full makeup, darkened hair, and Ricky Ricardo mustache in Orson Wells's classic Touch of Evil. He played it extremely well. Nowadays, he'd never work in that town again:

The Mask of Zorro was what 20 plus years ago? Hollywood was not nearly as woke back then. The first time I saw her in the trailer for that film I assumed they just hired an attractive actress from Spain, ( she does look very Mediterranean ) not knowing her name. She was obviously not a Mexican of the peasantry, anymore than Salma Hayek is, although because Hayek is from Mexico she is a Lantinx or something. It is so hard keeping with all the PC rules on who is acceptable for what roles.
    , @Alden
The Traffic script doesn't imply she's Hispanic. Her husband and her last name are Hispanic. But there is nothing in the script that implies she's Hispanic. There is a scene in which its revealed that her first name isn't Elena but Helen, and that her background is unknown but not Californian.

it's all very complicated for modern America in which ethnicity and shades of colors are most important. Who reads Vanity Fair? Its just 200 pages of ads for expensive things and 75 pages of geriatric fan magazine stuff. Jane Fonda was recently featured for God's sake. They still keep dredging up Kennedys and nursing home movie stars from the old days.

At least Town & Country which has equally expensive ads isn't so disgustingly wealthy bolshie.

  6. I am thoroughly enjoying the Left eating itself and hiring sub-par, less talented, uglier actors to play movie roles because of their obedience to their mighty god, diversity. It’s almost as good as the Lefty Hollywood Men Rape Everyone debacle.

This is a prime opportunity for a non-lefty rich man to build a big-budget studio that produces nothing but glitzy glamorous films starring really good looking folks that have happy endings and cast almost exclusively with white people. Some Donald Trump type of the film genre (interestingly, Trump mentioned in The Art of the Deal of serious considering becoming a Hollywood producer before joining the family business of NY real estate). Someone smart enough to reinvent the Hollywood formula that sold so well in the Golden Age.

This is the formula that makes the Hallmark channels successful in the holidays, but on lower budgets, and largely starring women who were either older (post-30s) or else 2nd tier in terms of Hollywood looks/star power.

Additionally it does not help that some white Latinos go to great lengths to modify their looks. The one that always gets me is Don Franciso of Sábado Gigante fame. The guy looks "latin" because of his tan, his hair and clothing. But according to wikipedia, his parents were European Jews who fled before WW2 to Chile. Basically if they had landed in NYC, he'd be just another Jackie Mason.

President Fox is descendant from a German who had immigrated first to American, and then to Mexico. But Vincente wears that 'stach that makes him look like a stereotypical 'latin'.

I think even if you told most lefties these guys' backgrounds, they still could not get past the visuals.

  10. You’re smart enough to understand. America determines race based on white racist standards. Do white racists consider Jews, Armenians, Hispanics or other assorted western Asian caucasoids as “white”? No, they don’t. Would any of the aforementioned be welcomed as members of a white nationalist group? No.

As a race realist you know that few Mexicans are actually white. Even the “white” ones have significant non European ancestry. You’ve blogged about this before numerous times.

I know plenty of Mexicans in the US and Mexico that have Luna’s and Valdez’ phenotype. They’re called mestizos: Oscar de la Hoya, Rocky Delgadillo, Rodolfo corky rodriguez, and many others. I understand how this is confusing to you if your only contact with Hispanics are the recent Indio, sambo, or coyotes from southern Mexico and Central America.

I’ve got a solution to all this racial strife: everybody back to where they’re from. Europeans back to Europe, Africans back to the motherland, Asians back to Asia. The mixed race amerind people have nowhere to go but the Americas.

Europeans have built many fantastic things on the American continent and you can take them with you. Yes, I know pre-Columbian America, unlike utopian 15th century Eurasia, was a savage backward place.

White racist standards certainly don't determine things. Otherwise, our grand experiment in not Noticing never would've got off the ground. And currently it rules us with a fist of iron, incomplete as it inevitably is. No one consults white racists about anything in our culture ever, unless they need a pin cushion or something to fear/laugh at.

Perhaps reflexive, untutored white racism gets a say. The sort that escapes self-censorship. Which is infinitely weaker on Noticing than among other races, and really shouldn't be called "racism." More like mere awareness of race.

The sort of white racism that excludes Jews, Armenians, and white-looking Hispanics would be intellectualized racism. Normal, everyday race-consciousness might or might not consider them white, based on how they appear. Lots of them are indistinguishable from traditionally white groups.

Amerinds have some place to go back to -NE Asia. They crossed the land bridge during successive glacial periods. They are not indigenous to this turf either. Of course some people crossed first and then successive waves killed them, enslaved them, pushed them south or east, but how do you identify which group actually came first?

It's white Chunky Clunky Glasses girls and homosexuals driving this movement.

Many white homosexuals are obsessed with POC ( _of color), presumably because it adds another layer of degeneracy to their 'preference.' This is not news. (It's probably (another) reason AIDS (which seems to be a very black disease) killed so many white homosexuals, which ironically led to the prioritization of AIDS over so many other illnesses, and very real progress in treatment.)

Women who look like this writer very often claim this preference, too. Why? Because that's who gives them attention. Okay, they give anything that walks by attention, but Chunky Clunky Glasses girls need delusions like everyone else. I suppose the armies of red-faced chavs touring Thailand actually believe Thai women really dig them.

It's very important that Chunky Clunky Glasses girls promote the value of mates like the ones they settle for. Dating black dudes is very déclassé, and they know it.

So if Blake Shelton, who dates a skinny blonde and reminds the cat ladies of all the men who never expressed any interest, is called 'sexiest man alive' by some crap supermarket mag, they scoff that it should have been the black dude from the Wire. After all, Blake Shelton is a redneck, and black Wire guy is 'English.' Charlie H or anyone who looks like him is not dating Chunky Clunky girl, either. A mestizo Mexican dude might.

And while they complain of 'whitewashing,' we also have cat ladies and homosexual casting folks inventing black Romans, black women saving the space program, etc. It's a problem that there isn't much African history or historical figures of much interest to most people, or fictional characters either for that matter (black Annie, black James Bond). Combing through Euro history to find a few blacks is an obsession in academia (saw a book in B&N yesterday about the 'black Tudors,' all ten of'em, by A. Cat Lady of course) That's how we ended up with black Aaron Burr and black George Washington on Broadway.

Much easier to cast movies creatively than it is to change reality.

  16. English-raised black actors — some of whom are good, some of whom, cough, John Boyega, cough, are pretty useless — taking American roles from black Americans.

My guess is that Americans get passed over not because of lack of talent, but because British-trained blacks are probably far more professional on set and easier to work with. There certainly is a strong cultural component to black American dysfunction.

It helps that within living memory of even 30 year olds, there used to be a strong expectation in the UK that blacks who wanted to succeed would learn how to behave like proper Englishmen and aspire to the standards of what everyone knew was a one of the world’s great civilizations. I have a sneaking hunch that the next generation of British black actors will be more aggrieved, demanding and contemptuous of British mores.

Are white American actors less professional than their British and Australian counterparts? Or merely fruitier?

(It has been argued that acting has become such a gay ghetto in the U.S. that the field has been totally abandoned to the flaming fairies. I dunno.)

The bottom line is that native-born Americans, both white and black, are getting shut out of lucrative acting jobs. Whether that's a problem depends on your perspective.

I've brought this up before, and no one has seemed to care. I've been told that because America is part of the Anglosphere, Americans should welcome (or at least accept) their replacement by co-ethnics from other Anglo countries. "Rule Britannia! 'Merkins can't act, so bring on the Brithespians!"

Here's what I say: America should pursue policies that are good for Americans. American movie studios should hire real Americans to play fictional Americans. If American actors are somehow deficient, then we should find a way to bring them up to par. We should build up our own industries with our own people.
    , @Melendwyr
I've been told that both British blacks and recent immigrants from various African countries view African-Americans with contempt. There could be subtle selection effects there (it's the cream of the respective crops that come over to America, either temporarily or permanently), it could be culture, or there could be something different about the populations in question.

  17. By reached a breaking point, I assume she means the gaggle of cackling fools with a pet grievance and the Diversity Racket finally got their way and broke Hollywood’s admittedly weak aversion to running every decision by a Social Justice Casting committee. In the interest of actor salary redistribution, dontcha know. A just cause if I never saw one.

The general public had no idea we were near a breaking point. It may have even been distracted by all the black-washing and other-color-washing of naturally white roles. Or the general flood of non-white faces in their entertainment. Apparently only middle-class blacks ever purchase a product anymore, for instance.

Reality hardly matters. If you repeat something often enough, it becomes true. That’s the belief of every activist journalist, anyway. Her next series of articles shall feature variations on the headline: “Has the World Finally Accepted Fat, Ugly Chicks as Sexually Superior?”

That’s unfair, however. They probably will browbeat Hollywood into casting as many non-whites as possible. My fictitious campaign will never fly.

Do these look like mono-species persons? It is NOT OK to cast a mono-species person as a bi-species person! It is the year 2018!
Any competent casting director could have found many qualified bi-species persons to play these parts. Due to the historical patterns of discrimination in Hollywood, many are employed in fields other than acting, but mono-species persons need to examine their privilege and stop making excuses. Bi-species persons, and poly-species persons, and people who identify in many other ways regarding their species identity can be found if you TRY. Just F****** TRY, A*******! I think many of them are employed at Google.

I see the images and the intersectional relationships dancing in my imagination within a kaleidoscope of color.

Why do the SJWs put up with such naked privilege and vile oppression in not launching a new “hashtag” to bring justice to those bi-species whatevers suffering at the hands of the mono-species whatevers. Come on! We’re talking about ancient Egypt here. At risk is the classic meme that has occupied our time, attention, and resources since the Civil Rights and feminist movements of the 1960s. We can’t bring justice to this world by letting Pharaonic Egypt slide by without a comment.

It seems that there has always been a privileged whatever oppressing a persecuted whatever somewhere. We must double down. Otherwise, this will never end!

If leftists were intelligent, humble, curious and knowledgeable about the world, they wouldn’t be leftists. Current year leftism fundamentally requires arrogance, an aversion to independent thought, and Crimestop: the reflexive ability to ignore any information that might lead to Badthink. A closely related and strongly encouraged, yet non-mandatory, trait is a general lack of curiosity about the world.

The London-Nigerian blacks are blacker. Is this why they get in, or that they went to drama academy? England must have the most drama colleges and schools of any nation. When I look at their wikis they all went to such schools. Not a requirement for Americans. Foul mouthed DeNiro did not even finish high school.

  26. Here’s a comment I made a while ago. I think it’s still relevant.

“Leftist constructionists”. The very phrase I was looking for.

“A radical “leftist constructionist”, true to his core beliefs, would find nothing remiss and much to commend in casting an old, obese, bearded, black man in the role of a beautiful, white enchantress as characters in a play. After all, if race and “gender” are indeed merely social constructs then the audience should have no problem in looking past mere appearances and seeing the true character of the role shining through in the actor’s performance.

It may even be a sort of litmus test for the audience. Those who have no difficulty in seeing the 18-year-old, ravishingly, beautiful young maiden in the performance of the grizzled old fart would be held up as models for the more literal minded to emulate. Consideration for advancement would be contingent upon displaying appropriate gullibility and zeal.”

My own anecdotal experience is that all leftists have close to zero understanding on population group numbers in their own country let alone the rest of the world. The cleverer leftists like Ezra Klein probably do know about demographics and ethnicity, but they don’t ever convey these facts to the general leftist audience, so when these “woke” common leftists spout their ignorance they sincerely believe what they are saying. It’s not an act for them, they are absolutely convinced they are right on such matters.

The first time I saw her in the trailer for that film I assumed they just hired an attractive actress from Spain, ( she does look very Mediterranean ) not knowing her name. I should have predicted this. Autistic Sherlock, Arrogant Achilles, and now Rigid Javert. Blacks are not only being inserted into roles they cannot play, they are jumping into characters with extensive negative characteristics. Is this happening without them realizing it ("Errybody uses 'Sherlock' to mean genius, let's do Black Sherlock!") or is it deliberate, to be able to non-gratuitously depict a black man defeating or killing a white man?
A major key to understanding the current mode of propaganda is to grow up with early 80s "aerobicize craze" flicks. Stop lining the plot up with some novel and instead ask, what just happens to be on screen most of the time? Again and again, in brief little asides that go nowhere, in plot-justified scenes, and in gratuitous indulgences, normies take in unopposed vital young black men physically dominating whining and hapless whites. (And every sensible human being who thinks about it would rather watch aerobics.) When you point this out to them they talk about how that makes sense within the movie's context. But movies are about working around sensemaking without just going nuts.
This method was laid bare in an NPR story about the failed challenge to affirmative action university admissions in Texas. The highly trained professional journalists presenting that story decided that the best way to introduce the plaintiff was not only to literally call her "stupid," but to bring in clearly black vocal talent, barking the word full of emotion at the audience. Hey those tote bags are nice.

It helps that within living memory of even 30 year olds, there used to be a strong expectation in the UK that blacks who wanted to succeed would learn how to behave like proper Englishmen and aspire to the standards of what everyone knew was a one of the world's great civilizations.

Whether that’s a problem depends on your perspective.

I’ve brought this up before, and no one has seemed to care. I’ve been told that because America is part of the Anglosphere, Americans should welcome (or at least accept) their replacement by co-ethnics from other Anglo countries. “Rule Britannia! ‘Merkins can’t act, so bring on the Brithespians!”

Here’s what I say: America should pursue policies that are good for Americans. American movie studios should hire real Americans to play fictional Americans. If American actors are somehow deficient, then we should find a way to bring them up to par. We should build up our own industries with our own people.

There are plenty of Anglospheric fruity actors: Tom Hardy, Hugh Jackman, etc. But American gay actors tend to cover more the "femme" spectrum of gayness while gay thespian foreigners tend to be more butch.
The Hollywood film industry as a whole is probably over 50 % gay, including producers, directos and actors. Weinstein and James Franco are outliers.
Steve, BTW, are you going to mention the James Franco brouhaha?
    , @J.Ross

Are white American actors less professional than their British and Australian counterparts?

This might be different now but historically, a British actor actually is an actor, whereas Jack Nicholson or Humphrey Bogart are Jack Nicholson and Humphrey Bogart: an overwhelming presense fitted with minimal modification into a role (which is usually tailored to show off the personality and not the other way around).

It’s white Chunky Clunky Glasses girls and homosexuals driving this movement.

Many white homosexuals are obsessed with POC ( _of color), presumably because it adds another layer of degeneracy to their ‘preference.’ This is not news. (It’s probably (another) reason AIDS (which seems to be a very black disease) killed so many white homosexuals, which ironically led to the prioritization of AIDS over so many other illnesses, and very real progress in treatment.)

Women who look like this writer very often claim this preference, too. Why? Because that’s who gives them attention. Okay, they give anything that walks by attention, but Chunky Clunky Glasses girls need delusions like everyone else. I suppose the armies of red-faced chavs touring Thailand actually believe Thai women really dig them.

It’s very important that Chunky Clunky Glasses girls promote the value of mates like the ones they settle for. Dating black dudes is very déclassé, and they know it.

So if Blake Shelton, who dates a skinny blonde and reminds the cat ladies of all the men who never expressed any interest, is called ‘sexiest man alive’ by some crap supermarket mag, they scoff that it should have been the black dude from the Wire. After all, Blake Shelton is a redneck, and black Wire guy is ‘English.’ Charlie H or anyone who looks like him is not dating Chunky Clunky girl, either. A mestizo Mexican dude might.

And while they complain of ‘whitewashing,’ we also have cat ladies and homosexual casting folks inventing black Romans, black women saving the space program, etc. It’s a problem that there isn’t much African history or historical figures of much interest to most people, or fictional characters either for that matter (black Annie, black James Bond). Combing through Euro history to find a few blacks is an obsession in academia (saw a book in B&N yesterday about the ‘black Tudors,’ all ten of’em, by A. Cat Lady of course) That’s how we ended up with black Aaron Burr and black George Washington on Broadway.

Much easier to cast movies creatively than it is to change reality.

I’m surprised Catherine Zeta-Jones never got called out for playing a Latina in The Mask of Zorro, Traffic and (upcoming) Cocaine Godmother. But I assume having both a Z and an A in her name, plus nobody in America knowing much about Wales, let her get away with it.

The Traffic script doesn’t imply she’s Hispanic. Her husband and her last name are Hispanic. But there is nothing in the script that implies she’s Hispanic. There is a scene in which its revealed that her first name isn’t Elena but Helen, and that her background is unknown but not Californian.

it’s all very complicated for modern America in which ethnicity and shades of colors are most important. Who reads Vanity Fair? Its just 200 pages of ads for expensive things and 75 pages of geriatric fan magazine stuff. Jane Fonda was recently featured for God’s sake. They still keep dredging up Kennedys and nursing home movie stars from the old days.

At least Town & Country which has equally expensive ads isn’t so disgustingly wealthy bolshie.

Normally the SJWs get all in a huff because so many of the criminals in movies and tv are dark-skinned, but in this case they want a real kingpin played by someone presumably substantially more ethnic looking than the real guy?

Maybe the plan is to portray Edgar Valdez Villarreal sympathetically. They might portray his hometown in America as a hotbed of racist bigots…

I watched the Johnny Depp film a few years back that had a terrifying cameo from Cliff Curtis as Pablo Escobar. The following weekend I went to a BBQ in South London and Cliff Curtis was sitting outside just hanging out. I couldn't separate the two and was far too scared to talk to him.

There are plenty of Anglospheric fruity actors: Tom Hardy, Hugh Jackman, etc. But American gay actors tend to cover more the “femme” spectrum of gayness while gay thespian foreigners tend to be more butch.
The Hollywood film industry as a whole is probably over 50 % gay, including producers, directos and actors. Weinstein and James Franco are outliers.
Steve, BTW, are you going to mention the James Franco brouhaha?

Meanwhile the BBC is producing a new (non-musical version) of Les Miserables.

The role of Inspector Jalvert will be played by Nigerian-British actor David Oyelowo, best known for The Wire.

    http://variety.com/2018/tv/news/les-miserables-mini-series-bbc-david-oyelowo-1202530969/

I should have predicted this. Autistic Sherlock, Arrogant Achilles, and now Rigid Javert. Blacks are not only being inserted into roles they cannot play, they are jumping into characters with extensive negative characteristics. Is this happening without them realizing it (“Errybody uses ‘Sherlock’ to mean genius, let’s do Black Sherlock!”) or is it deliberate, to be able to non-gratuitously depict a black man defeating or killing a white man?
A major key to understanding the current mode of propaganda is to grow up with early 80s “aerobicize craze” flicks. (And every sensible human being who thinks about it would rather watch aerobics.) When you point this out to them they talk about how that makes sense within the movie’s context. But movies are about working around sensemaking without just going nuts.
This method was laid bare in an NPR story about the failed challenge to affirmative action university admissions in Texas. The highly trained professional journalists presenting that story decided that the best way to introduce the plaintiff was not only to literally call her “stupid,” but to bring in clearly black vocal talent, barking the word full of emotion at the audience. Hey those tote bags are nice.

What you describe is the modern day version of “the white man’s burden”.

Additionally it does not help that some white Latinos go to great lengths to modify their looks. The one that always gets me is Don Franciso of Sábado Gigante fame. The guy looks “latin” because of his tan, his hair and clothing. But according to wikipedia, his parents were European Jews who fled before WW2 to Chile. Basically if they had landed in NYC, he’d be just another Jackie Mason.

President Fox is descendant from a German who had immigrated first to American, and then to Mexico. But Vincente wears that ‘stach that makes him look like a stereotypical ‘latin’.

I think even if you told most lefties these guys’ backgrounds, they still could not get past the visuals.

Come on! We’re talking about ancient Egypt here. At risk is the classic meme that has occupied our time, attention, and resources since the Civil Rights and feminist movements of the 1960s.

It helps that within living memory of even 30 year olds, there used to be a strong expectation in the UK that blacks who wanted to succeed would learn how to behave like proper Englishmen and aspire to the standards of what everyone knew was a one of the world's great civilizations. I have a sneaking hunch that the next generation of British black actors will be more aggrieved, demanding and contemptuous of British mores.

I’ve been told that both British blacks and recent immigrants from various African countries view African-Americans with contempt. There could be subtle selection effects there (it’s the cream of the respective crops that come over to America, either temporarily or permanently), it could be culture, or there could be something different about the populations in question.

This is not much better than rumor but what I heard was that the slavers resolved to obviate effective resistance by teaching laziness and breaking the connection between work and profit. The slave so trained could be made to work (or could be given a false bargain that seemed like a break, as the lords of European serfs would do), but left to his own devices would have no well-developed will. This plan failed in the Caribbean, where there was a lower proportion of slave supervisors. The Caribbean blacks were able to illegally keep a little garden and illegally trade the produce, which kept alive their work ethic, dignity, and ambition. It's also a lot easier to revolt against a few families on an island than against the South.

That's not as bad as it sounds because porn "stars" nowadays make nothing and this girl (whom I had not heard of) was not in it very long.
