Statistics professor Andrew Gelman follows up on Angus Deaton and Ann Case’s October paper on the increase in death rates among whites aged 45-54 with a graph showing the age-adjusted death rate among white men spiked in the early 2000s, then dropped back to about 2% above where it was in 1999 (in an era when death rates for Hispanics and blacks were dropping steadily). But death rates among white women continued to grow and by 2013, the latest year for which data are available, were about 9% above 1999.
The next step would be to decompose this into separate causes such as lung cancer and overdoses.
And here’s more bad news that was previously overlooked: Gelman’s new graphs show death rates are way up among 35-44 year old white women, too:
And, judging by how bad the single year of age graph for 35 year olds looks, the trend should be checked in 25-34 year olds too:

I have not been following but the headlines of this one, and probably someone has already said this. But Cialis hit the market in 1998, and I believe it was a couple years later that you could buy it no prescription needed from Canada for like two bucks a pill, as you can do now. Yes its fun to mess around with. But, in all seriousness, I had a fainting spell creep up on me that did fortunately abate two minutes later no harm done. I think if there is one drug men are willing to risk “Is your heart healthy enough?” well that’s the one. (I have tachycardia so I was dumb to do it.) Then the women, well there is birth control, which really no one has ever explained to me why woman put up with the drastic side effects, (breasts disappearing?) so much so switches to different brands is just normal from what I can tell. What other medication is that regularly done with? (I do not know?)

Roughly, it is the same causes as the men. I said I wrote on this last year. And there was much hand wringing in typical places about “women dying”. Suicide is up, overdoses are up, and the sources spoke of the effect of being alone, divorced or never married. They used the wording “Dying for love”.
Yet breaking out the calculations on the data given the facts, total suicides vs men/women, men consist of 75% of them and women 25%. Again some of the “poisonings” were probably suicides but there was not enough reason to list them as such.

Well this is clearly evidence that finally Feminism is delivering the Social Justice statistics the equalizing women have long demanded. For most of recorded history women had shorter average lifespans than men because pregnancy and childbirth. (Or so I believe: open to correction.) After a brief burst of outliving men it looks as if the gap is closing. That will doubtless please everyone who hates inequality.

So it's not an illusion caused by concentration.

Why in God’s name is it the relative death rates of men vs women that is of concern here, not the rise in the absolute death rates?
Men die from suicide at roughly 4 times the rate of women, and from alcohol poisoning at roughly 3 times the rate. If, say, men rise by a factor of 1.5, and women by a factor of 2 in suicide, then, of course, men rise by 50% and women by 100% — which seems like women are taking a much bigger hit, but, of course, the rise in the absolute number of men dying by suicide is double that of women. Really, who cares in the end about the relative rates? Why shouldn’t we care about the number of additional deaths?

In order to maintain a middle class standard of living, in the private sector, for many families, the woman must work. And with our constant threat to outsource, to in-source to illegals, to bring over H1B workers, with a government that seemingly does not care, not only must a man work, he must work hard and he will worry all the time. When you combine this arrangement of both spouses working, wages flat, worry, with the massive doses of antidepressants and antianxiety medication that are prescribed today (to numb people who are thinking about their situation) then it would seem inevitable that health will suffer. Russia at the tail end of communism and in the first few years of capitalism suffered very badly this way, for different specific reasons, but all resulting from demoralization. But I would predict if you examine the health of those who work for the government, they are probably doing much better. No worries for them. I also believe that in Israel and Japan, that have governments whose primary role is to protect the population, life spans are increasing.

I’ve often thought that housework is ideal exercise. Stay on your feet a lot but move around. On the other hand men’s office work entails a lot of sitting. So perhaps the increase of white women’s over men’s death rate reflects the decline in their work at home.
As I’ve mentioned before though I think the overall increase in white death rate reflects the anomie resulting from diversity as outlined by Robert Putnam.
It would be useful for Putnam to break out his diversity effects by ethnicity and sex. Perhaps he has done so in his existing publications. Do nonwhite ethnicities in the US suffer from diversity as much as whites?

George Carlin once mused on the unknown, eventual effects of birth control pills. We probably haven’t been told the half of it. It does seem harder for women to give up smoking, but men drink more. Women didn’t have longer average life spans until the 20th century. For the past 100 years, they have had. It’s nothing new in the long view, that the average life spans of m/f should get closer.
Suicides may never be equal, but an amazing number of Indian and west Asian women throw themselves in wells or burn themselves alive (it might be charitable to drop sacks of sleeping pills on some of these places since you can’t change their behavior, at least make it painless), so I don’t think it’s impossible we’ll see an increase in that area eventually.

Gelman’s analysis may or may not cast doubt on the idea of a *general* increase in mortality across all whites, particularly among men, but I don’t see how anybody can look at the dramatic increases in suicide across all age groups (Figure 4) in poisoning and suicide in all regions of the country (Figure 3) in the ratio of mortality causes between lower and higher education groups (Table 1), and in reported pain morbidity and disability (Table 2) and think that lower-education whites are in a good way. The single most striking figure is not Figure 1, which has been reproduced in many outlets and is what Gelman takes issue with, but Figure 4, which shows that the collective mortality due to suicide, alcohol, and drugs has doubled across *all* age cohorts of whites, clearly not due to age composition.

But but go to Google search and look at their current visual tribute to veterans. There’s only one obviously white male represented among the seven veterans shown, and he’s in the background (waving, as if to say, “Hey! Remember me?”)

If you want to see the generational pattern more clearly, wait till this X-Games and radical sports generation reach their fifties. With the amount of harm they have done to their muscles, bones, joints and sinews, the painkillers needed to alleviate the physical damage will compound to the already existing alcohol, drug, venereal and mental problems.

For white women in the 45-54 age group, I wonder if alcoholism plays a role, or maybe I am just generalizing from my own family. Opiate addiction could be a major factor for the 35-44 cohort.
The early death demo from the boomers in my family, who are dead or dying at this point, all who we were raised in upper middle class homes, would be from, in order of appearance, smoking, alcohol, cocaine, amphetamines, serotonin reuptake inhibitors, sugar/empty carb abuse, and obesity. Almost all were/are women.
If one lightly suggested giving up whatever they were abusing at the time, one could expect hysterical crying as a rule, while being labeled a bad person by said abuser. They all act/acted like shitty little fascists towards other family members–enablers amongst themselves.
Most dead baby boomers are better off so, harsh as it is to say.

Who does those doodles on Google? I mean putting an almost entirely non-white cast of veterans when virutally all veterans, especially those who died, were white males, just seems really weird. I mean even if the “artists” are non-white, they must know this is bullshit.

Its the SMOKING. While I don’t have stats, my own lying eyes say that far more women smoke than men, to stay slim. Tobacco is an appetite suppressant. It also acts to reduce anxiety. Far more working and even middle class women in my own personal observation smoke now than in the early/mid 1990s.
Yes, feminism is real. Just look at all those webzines and print magazines, selling the feminist credo of absolute sexual freedom for women. Which does exist, for now, prior to Islamization, but has its downsides, which for most women means being alone when the Wall hits; around the late twenties to mid thirties for most women who do not have excellent regimes and rigorous beauty regimens. Of course a key component of being in the active sexual market is staying thin for women. Hence the smoking.
I think working class and middle class White men smoke less than women; but do drink more.
IF I am right then lung and other cancer deaths would be rising for women compared to men in the working class; and alcohol and drug related deaths would be rising for men compared to women in the White working class.

The irony is that absolutely no society in either the pre recorded or recorded history of the species Homo Sapiens has given women more power, wealth, legal privilege and freedom than the USA.

Why in God's name is it the relative death rates of men vs women that is of concern here, not the rise in the absolute death rates?
Men die from suicide at roughly 4 times the rate of women, and from alcohol poisoning at roughly 3 times the rate. If, say, men rise by a factor of 1.5, and women by a factor of 2 in suicide, then, of course, men rise by 50% and women by 100% -- which seems like women are taking a much bigger hit, but, of course, the rise in the absolute number of men dying by suicide is double that of women. Really, who cares in the end about the relative rates? Why shouldn't we care about the number of additional deaths?

Suicide is up, overdoses are up, and the sources spoke of the effect of being alone, divorced or never married. They used the wording “Dying for love”.

Drinking a bottle of Chardonnay after work christened a new generation of closeted alcoholics and acres of local grapes being ripped out and replaced with Chardonnay. In order to maintain a middle class standard of living, in the private sector, for many families, the woman must work. And with our constant threat to outsource, to in-source to illegals, to bring over H1B workers, with a government that seemingly does not care, not only must a man work, he must work hard and he will worry all the time. When you combine this arrangement of both spouses working, wages flat, worry, with the massive doses of antidepressants and antianxiety medication that are prescribed today (to numb people who are thinking about their situation) then it would seem inevitable that health will suffer. Russia at the tail end of communism and in the first few years of capitalism suffered very badly this way, for different specific reasons, but all resulting from demoralization. But I would predict if you examine the health of those who work for the government, they are probably doing much better. No worries for them. I also believe that in Israel and Japan, that have governments whose primary role is to protect the population, life spans are increasing.

I’ve often thought that housework is ideal exercise. Stay on your feet a lot but move around. On the other hand men’s office work entails a lot of sitting. So perhaps the increase of white women’s over men’s death rate reflects the decline in their work at home.
As I’ve mentioned before though I think the overall increase in white death rate reflects the anomie resulting from diversity as outlined by Robert Putnam.
It would be useful for Putnam to break out his diversity effects by ethnicity and sex. Perhaps he has done so in his existing publications. Do nonwhite ethnicities in the US suffer from diversity as much as whites?

George Carlin once mused on the unknown, eventual effects of birth control pills. We probably haven’t been told the half of it. It does seem harder for women to give up smoking, but men drink more. Women didn’t have longer average life spans until the 20th century. For the past 100 years, they have had. It’s nothing new in the long view, that the average life spans of m/f should get closer.
Suicides may never be equal, but an amazing number of Indian and west Asian women throw themselves in wells or burn themselves alive (it might be charitable to drop sacks of sleeping pills on some of these places since you can’t change their behavior, at least make it painless), so I don’t think it’s impossible we’ll see an increase in that area eventually.

Gelman’s analysis may or may not cast doubt on the idea of a *general* increase in mortality across all whites, particularly among men, but I don’t see how anybody can look at the dramatic increases in suicide across all age groups (Figure 4) in poisoning and suicide in all regions of the country (Figure 3) in the ratio of mortality causes between lower and higher education groups (Table 1), and in reported pain morbidity and disability (Table 2) and think that lower-education whites are in a good way. The single most striking figure is not Figure 1, which has been reproduced in many outlets and is what Gelman takes issue with, but Figure 4, which shows that the collective mortality due to suicide, alcohol, and drugs has doubled across *all* age cohorts of whites, clearly not due to age composition.

Off topic, sort of, but maybe not so much. The vast majority of US soldiers who died in America’s wars throughout history were young white males. But but go to Google search and look at their current visual tribute to veterans. There’s only one obviously white male represented among the seven veterans shown, and he’s in the background (waving, as if to say, “Hey! Remember me?”)

If you want to see the generational pattern more clearly, wait till this X-Games and radical sports generation reach their fifties. With the amount of harm they have done to their muscles, bones, joints and sinews, the painkillers needed to alleviate the physical damage will compound to the already existing alcohol, drug, venereal and mental problems.
To say nothing of the violent backlash they will suffer when time for redemption from their Red Guard years comes either in the form of realization of the social destruction left in their wake, or else in the form of an even more abusive, irrational and demanding next generation.

I covered that back then, but the problem was that it was hard to tell if uneducated white women really were getting worse off or if, as education levels increase over the generations, the uneducated ones were becoming a hard core remnant with concentrated problems. Now we know, surprisingly, that the increased death rate problem is so bad for white women that it affects the overall group of white women of all classes. So it’s not an illusion caused by concentration.

For white women in the 45-54 age group, I wonder if alcoholism plays a role, or maybe I am just generalizing from my own family. Opiate addiction could be a major factor for the 35-44 cohort.
If one lightly suggested giving up whatever they were abusing at the time, one could expect hysterical crying as a rule, while being labeled a bad person by said abuser. They all act/acted like shitty little fascists towards other family members–enablers amongst themselves.

Its the SMOKING. While I don’t have stats, my own lying eyes say that far more women smoke than men, to stay slim. Tobacco is an appetite suppressant. It also acts to reduce anxiety. Far more working and even middle class women in my own personal observation smoke now than in the early/mid 1990s.
Yes, feminism is real. Just look at all those webzines and print magazines, selling the feminist credo of absolute sexual freedom for women. Which does exist, for now, prior to Islamization, but has its downsides, which for most women means being alone when the Wall hits; around the late twenties to mid thirties for most women who do not have excellent regimes and rigorous beauty regimens. Of course a key component of being in the active sexual market is staying thin for women. Hence the smoking.
I think working class and middle class White men smoke less than women; but do drink more.
IF I am right then lung and other cancer deaths would be rising for women compared to men in the working class; and alcohol and drug related deaths would be rising for men compared to women in the White working class.

Men die from suicide at roughly 4 times the rate of women, and from alcohol poisoning at roughly 3 times the rate. If, say, men rise by a factor of 1.5, and women by a factor of 2 in suicide, then, of course, men rise by 50% and women by 100% -- which seems like women are taking a much bigger hit, but, of course, the rise in the absolute number of men dying by suicide is double that of women. Really, who cares in the end about the relative rates? Why shouldn't we care about the number of additional deaths?
