From the New York Times:

Kate Smith Sang Racist Songs. But Jersey Shore Town Will Not Abandon Her ‘God Bless America.’
The mayor of Wildwood said the town would still play the song every summer morning, despite concerns about lyrics Smith recorded in the 1930s.

By Michael Gold
April 25, 2019

At the height of summer, when the boardwalk in Wildwood, N.J., is mobbed by beach-loving visitors, pretty much everything comes to a halt at 11 a.m.

That’s when the sunscreen-drenched crowd falls silent, the cacophony of loud voices replaced by a patriotic medley blasted from the boardwalk’s loudspeakers — “The Star-Spangled Banner’’ followed by Kate Smith’s famous version of “God Bless America.’’

The daily ritual, rooted in national pride, is a beloved local tradition. But it has now come under scrutiny after recent revelations that Smith’s recording catalog featured racist songs.

Nevertheless, the town’s mayor, Ernie Troiano Jr., insists that Wildwood had no plans to silence Smith.

“It is one of the most patriotic songs that was ever recorded,” Mr. Troiano said. “Why would I want to change tradition?”

The mayor’s stance differed from recent decisions by the New York Yankees and Philadelphia Flyers to stop playing Smith’s version of the song at their games after each team learned about the offensive songs, which were recorded in the 1930s.

Mr. Troiano’s spirited defense of preserving his town’s custom has placed Wildwood in the middle of a national cultural debate about political correctness and how America should reckon with its racist past.

  4. Question: How many years must pass before a White person like Kate Smith, or a people like the Americans, can be absolved of a sin?

    Assuming the sin even matters.

    Is the answer infinity?

This question came to mind today when my wife mentioned how shocking it is that women in America couldn’t vote until 1920. I agreed that it is shocking, but I reminded her that it was a century ago (even before Emmet Till!)

    That wasn’t good enough.

(I didn’t ask her if women in Romania could vote in 1920, or if anyone at all could at that particular moment in their colorful history.)

Remind her that not one woman voted to give women the right to vote. (They couldn’t vote yet, remember?) All votes giving women the right to vote were cast by men. She can thank us any time.

Remind her that the argument against giving women the right to vote was that women are too emotional and irrational to make good voters. The argument seemed very reasonable at the time. It seems even more reasonable today now that we have radical feminists and Hillary voters screaming “believe the survivors!”

Remind her that every time she puts on a pair of shoes made by slave labor in some third world dictatorship, she is guilty of being a slave trader. Every time she votes for a democrat or a republican she is guilty of committing war crimes, since at least some of our wars have been unnecessary and therefore crimes, and the democrats and republicans always vote for them.

If she is a slave trader and a war criminal, then what right does she have to be shocked by anyone else’s behavior?

If she thinks she has a case that she is not a slave trader and a war criminal, then what makes her think 19th century men who owned slaves and kept women from voting didn’t have a case justifying their actions as well?

Look at heritage from a Mexican point of view:

Half your ancestry is Aztec. Aztecs practiced conquest, massacre, torture, rape, and slavery, all of which were nothing compared to the human sacrifice and cannibalism they practiced with relish on a grand scale.

The other half of your ancestry is Spanish. The Spanish practiced conquest, massacre, torture, rape, and slavery. To their everlasting moral credit they were horrified by the human sacrifice and cannibalism they found going on in Tenochtitlan.

If I were a Mexican I would celebrate all that was praiseworthy in Cortez and Montezuma. I would celebrate my ancestors and traditions. I would acknowledge the bad stuff but not make a big deal out of it. Judging other people without walking in their shoes is cheap morality. Judging other people while you and yours commit worse sins is cheap hypocrisy.

Don’t practice cannibalism, but don’t be ashamed of your cannibal ancestors. Why is this so hard for modern idiots to understand?

Finian’s Rainbow (Harburg/Lane) is considered unplayable today, even though it was radically “liberal” for its day. The white sheriff is turned black at the end, as “punishment”. Another ironic oddity of the era is that, barely six years after WWII, Copenhagen is pronounced the German way in Hans Christian Andersen, despite its having a Jewish composer, screenwriter, and star.

Five of the six composers given individual chapters in Alex Wilder’s classic American Popular Song 1900-1950 are Jewish, Cole Porter being the exception. The next step below was a section of a following chapter, and goys so honored include Jimmy Van Heusen, Victor Herbert, Hoagy Carmichael, Harry Warren, Isham Jones, and Richard Whiting.

(If the last name is unfamiliar to you, his song titles won’t be. “On the Good Ship Lollipop”, for one, was inspired by his famous daughter Margaret, not Shirley Temple.)

The best off-the-cuff answer to your question would be “roughly half”, but more nearer the top. Lotka and Pareto are handy guides.

    > The NYT is refusing calls to cease publication, despite revelations that it published articles containing the racial slur “darkies”

This. Few prominent SJWs have racist skeletons in their closets. The yearn to conform is a key to success in their movement. And they’re young, so the animating Spirit of the Age hasn’t completely turned since their adolescent years.

SJW institutions are bastions of conformist groupthink. Back when slurring blacks or mocking transgenders was in style, that’s what they did.

As the revered Alinsky quipped, make ’em live by their own rules. Regular people can grok the hypocrisy of “venial sin for me, mortal sin for thee.” The agenda of Progressive candidates and cultural icons advances because few realize what the nomenklatura has in store for them, as the Revolution keeps ratcheting.

I know Wildwood very well – it’s your stereotypical Jersey shore boardwalk town that attracts tons of working class ethnic whites (or used to anyway, probably a lot of Latinos now), sort of the type of Italian Eddie Murphy once lampooned in his standup bit about Rocky. Not at all surprised the political leader of such a place took this position.

  44. So the morons are upset about what the long dead Kate Smith sang in the 1930’s? Here’s one for the fools — the black communist Paul Robeson sang at least one of the same songs. But let’s take it one step further. As baseball was segregated in the 30’s stop going to Yankee games –they’re RACIST!!!!! Not quiet half. At least in the 1918 election. In twelve states, women were permitted to vote for, and only for, presidential electors. But only Illinois had passed this law before the 1916 election.

Remind her that not one woman voted to give women the right to vote. (They couldn’t vote yet, remember?) All votes giving women the right to vote were cast by men. She can thank us any time.

Women were given the chance to vote on their own suffrage, in some elections. Feminists put an end to this, because the results were even worse. According to Helen (Rittelmeyer) Andrews, suffragettes in the UK were quite explicit about this strategy, at least to their allies in Parliament.

That women were more likely than men to vote against suffrage is one of the better reasons in its favor!

These were upper-crust “Puritan”, or Puritan-stock, women. One of them, “Mrs Herbert Lyman”, is a distant cousin of mine. Catholic women also opposed it, for different but equally valid reasons.
