A New York Times reporter ventures into the Heart of Darkness Whiteness, a Trump campaign office in Tampa, and finds …

An Unlikely Melting Pot at a Trump Office in Florida

By DAVID BARSTOW

For a campaign depicted as offering a rallying point for the white working class, volunteers for Donald J. Trump in Tampa are noteworthy for their ethnic diversity and for the variety of their political opinions.

… For a campaign frequently depicted as offering a rallying point for the white working class, the people volunteering to help Mr. Trump here are noteworthy for their ethnic diversity. They include a young woman who recently arrived from Peru; an immigrant from the Philippines; a 70-year-old Lakota Indian; a teenage son of Russian immigrants; a Mexican-American.

They range the political spectrum, too, from lifelong Democrat to independent to libertarian to conservative Republican. To a person, they condemned and sometimes ridiculed David Duke and other white supremacists who have noisily backed Mr. Trump. “I totally do not agree with them,” said one volunteer, Andrew Cherry.

Yet like Mrs. Linsky, many spoke openly about how fears centered on race and ethnicity were at the heart of their support for Mr. Trump. To a large extent, they traced those fears to the scars they still bear from the Great Recession — lost jobs, drained 401(k)’s, home foreclosures, rising debt, the feeling that the country is broken.

More than anything, several Trump volunteers here said, the Great Recession exposed a corrupt, out-of-touch ruling class in Washington that allows big corporations to outsource jobs at will while doing nothing to address millions of illegal immigrants who compete for jobs and drain government coffers.

A few comments:

- First, the working class isn’t all that white anymore.

- Second, the thing that most drives the American upper middle class around the bend about the New Yorker — his gaudy, unrefined taste — is exactly what appeals to The Diverse. (In contrast, golf architecture aficionados, for example, are apoplectic about Trump’s increased profile in the world of golf course design. Do you realize that vulgarian dared to criticize the USGA’s cutting edge stylistic setup of Pinehurst for the 2014 US Open in which they ripped out half the sprinklers and let the course turn brown? Trump dared to tweet that golf courses look better green. Why, I never …)

- Third, Trump’s tastes tend to appeal to immigrants.

mostly upper class white girls have always had a secret liking for black dudes rioting. Even in South Africa, where rioting often lead to deaths, rapes and bad injury, and those rioting were often intoxicated or had just gone through witchcraft rituals, upper class white girls got involved against the "evil" security forces. Of course the more common white girls knew who was protecting them and did not share those crazy fantasies. Roissy has more on that dark secret of upper class white girls. Trump Tower is not Versailles, although both rely on gold, marble, and mirrors.

Yea, I also think so. They actually like his display of wealth, and his bragging. They would also do it if they got rich quickly. Trump comes from a wealthy background, good schooling, so it’s not part of his upbringing; but learnt that demeanor in NY, and it suits his personality. In his line of work he is probably dealing with those types of people all day, including the more devious and criminal slumlords. He enjoys bragging and displaying his wealth. Many blacks also appreciate that.
Upper class whites cringe and find that disgusting, but Trump is beyond them, having an upper class upbringing, fabulous wealth, and seeing through their hypocrisy and game. That’s why I love watching him on vids, so entertaining, and sticking it to the upper classes every time.
Trump’s strength is that he is enjoying these fights. I think Hillary is straining under them. Her health issues do not help either.

the media continue to paint the false narrative that Trump derives his popularity by appealing to whites….yet the reason the elites and democrats fear Trump is because they know he will get 15% of the Black vote in November against Hillary. He will also get 30% of the hispanic vote. Trump does appeal to working class voters, as they are the citizens hurt most by immigration and free trade. He appeals to the democrats who have been ignored by the democrats since 1992 and he appeals to the former Perot voters. These people have been ignored by both parties , and many will go to the polls in November to vote for Trump.

Trump has a good opportunity to win Ohio , Pennsylvania, Virginia, North Carolina because of the support he gets among African-Americans. When he wins in November it will be in a large part because he gets 15% of the Black vote. Pete Wilson obtained 20% of the Black vote in California because of his anti-migrant policies….20 more years of massive immigration has only made conditions worse for the working class. Now it effects blacks in North Carolina and PA which had not a single Mexican migrant in 1995, yet today have thousands.

This is where the lefties get it wrong. They assume that blacks and Mexicans at the bottom of the ladder welcome open borders. Perhaps they do … Up to a point. Once they want to move up, however, sympathy runs out.

Barbara Jordan said the same thing in 1986. Cesar Chavez wanted to keep Mexican illegal alien scab labor out of SoCal so his United Farm workers Union could raise Mexican American stoop labor wages.

  14. Good point… Trump personifies a kind of America – successful, rich, brash, tasteless, plebeian, aggressive, confident, kitsch, loud, assertive, republican, anti-intellectual, and (petty) bourgeois to the core.

And that kind of America does appeal to people from “developing” countries.

Camille Paglia wrote favorably about Trump recently:

Trump’s fearless candor and brash energy feel like a great gust of fresh air, sweeping the tedious clichés and constant guilt-tripping of political correctness out to sea. Unlike Hillary Clinton, whose every word and policy statement on the campaign trail are spoon-fed to her by a giant paid staff and army of shadowy advisors, Trump is his own man, with a steely “damn the torpedoes” attitude. He has a swaggering retro machismo that will give hives to the Steinem cabal. He lives large, with the urban flash and bling of a Frank Sinatra. But Trump is a workaholic who doesn’t drink and who has an interesting penchant for sophisticated, strong-willed European women.

Primary voters nationwide are clearly responding to Trump’s brand of classic can-do American moxie. There has been a sense of weary paralysis in our increasingly Byzantine and monstrously wasteful government bureaucracies. Putting a bottom-line businessman with executive experience into the White House has probably been long overdue.

Trump’s aesthetic is basically unrefined, bold 80s ostentation. It hasn’t changed or been updated since then, and can’t really, since it’s so identified with his brand and aesthetic now. Despite some elements of 80s style becoming fashionable again recently, Trump’s style does look very tacky today.

Correct this aspect of the Zimmerman story is seldom told. The value of homes had crashed causing desperate homeowners to sell or rent out at lower prices. More blacks moved in and around the same time belongings started going missing.

Out of the 4 burglars identified a year before the shooting all were black. One black homeowner who defended Zimmerman said matter of fact it was the black boys robbing the joint.

In the 911 call Zimmerman says he noticed Trayvon peering into homes. It was raining and he wasn't walking with any purpose. He also had been caught at school with burglary tools. His behavior had become so alarming his desperate mom sent him to live with dad. So here he was in a new place, not in school, what a perfect opportunity to scope out homes to rob during the week?

Trump only needs to concern himself with Hispanics in FL. The mostly Mexican-Americans in CA, TX don’t matter in electoral politics and evidently in TX he held his own among TX GOP primary voters.

Mex-Americans will be a factor in NV & CO but so will white resentment so it’s hard to know how things will play out there.

In FL immigration isn’t a major issue with Cubans & Puerto Ricans so he should do ok with them.

I think when the dust settles the elites will not only be shocked by the reemergence of the white working class as a political force but also by how little even minorities buy into their tripe.

There was shock that this wealthy white male with ridiculous right-wing views was actually far more attractive to the poorer immigrant communities than the more polished and enlightened leftist establishment.

It was a mind-blowing phenomenon for a lot of people. They just couldn’t get their heads around it.

This fits right in with the GOP. They want to run the United States exactly like a corporation – including the ability to fire the old, sick, or unproductive from the country and replace them with foreign serfs.

Trump banned a golfer from his properties after the man throttled a Canada goose with his club. (Which club?, I can hear every golfer ask.)

The Donald thus has his green side, even if green isn't always green on the links.

Japan might resuscitate her dying golf culture if more courses were pink:

Did that inspire an early episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm? I recall Larry killing a swan on the golf course and trying to cover it up.

This is where the lefties get it wrong. They assume that blacks and Mexicans at the bottom of the ladder welcome open borders. Perhaps they do ... Up to a point. Once they want to move up, however, sympathy runs out.

Booker T Washington called for American employers to "cast down their buckets", hire American blacks and not import foreigners in his famous 1895 Atlanta speech. Barbara Jordan said the same thing in 1986. Cesar Chavez wanted to keep Mexican illegal alien scab labor out of SoCal so his United Farm workers Union could raise Mexican American stoop labor wages.

He did at first, then he got with the party line like every other lefty.

Good point... Trump personifies a kind of America - successful, rich, brash, tasteless, plebeian, aggressive, confident, kitsch, loud, assertive, republican, anti-intellectual, and (petty) bourgeois to the core.

And that kind of America does appeal to people from "developing" countries.

    Trump: He’s Got Moxie!

Trump pisses off the leftists in part because he appeals to the people that they want to appeal to: the working class. Tom Wolfe wrote about this in several articles, including his indictment of modern architecture, From Bauhaus to Our House. The leftists (and Bernie typifies this) want these people to live the life of the cultured ascetic, in good old Honest Worker housing apartments, sparsely appointed with Honest Worker furniture; in other words, taking the lead from their betters – the leftists. These working class people, however, have no interest in being cultured ascetics; they want Texas Gothic houses with green grass yards, lush carpeting, king sized beds, 60 inch flatscreen TVs, luxurious carpet, vacations in Cancun or Hawaii…in other words, a lifestyle much more akin to Trump than Sanders. The leftists can’t stand that the Honest Worker – the acme of Marxism – is much more interested in living the good life than sacrificing for the proletariat.

@anom: "at 25 seconds in of the video on the left you can see white girls among the crowd of black rioters. They are squealing like little piglets."

mostly upper class white girls have always had a secret liking for black dudes rioting. The combination of violence, sexual energy, and the naughtiness of it seems to turn them on and make them do things which can be really bad for their health.

Upper class not descended from rich merchants are descended from rich warriors

Our former crack smoking rightwing mayor here in Toronto had the same dynamic.

There was shock that this wealthy white male with ridiculous right-wing views was actually far more attractive to the poorer immigrant communities than the more polished and enlightened leftist establishment.

It was a mind-blowing phenomenon for a lot of people. They just couldn't get their heads around it.

I predict Trump will do a lot better than some might imagine. The 'big man' with a big personality has a lot of appeal to many NAM communities. They see celebrity or a powerful personality, and they want to in some way attach themselves to it.

Agree with the Rob Ford analogy. Like with Trump, all of the alternatives to Ford were terrible. Ford didn’t have to be great; it was enough that he not continue the ridiculous policies of his opponents. Ditto for the Donald IMO.

Of course Trump doesn’t drink, is not morbidly obese, and doesn’t smoke crack AFAIK …

Trump is the american rob ford. Ford’s success was driven bi Indian, black, Italian and Portuguese voters. Ethnics loved him.

Jeb bush is john Tory, rejected by Ontarians for promoting religious (read:Muslim and Catholic) schools. Tried to promote a condescending diversity in the conservative party.

Ted Cruz is Stephen Harper. Ultra intelligent. Brilliantly strategic. Ambitious. Ultimately, very hard to like, even by those that love him.

Logically, the blacks and Hispanics should support Trump. THEY will be the ones most hurt by
new immigrants. Too bad they aren't capable of such critical thinking.

…..so they’ll vote for one of 2 old white folk ?!?!
