From The Forward:

Why Are There No Statues Of Jewish Confederate Judah Benjamin To Tear Down?

Ari Feldman August 20, 2017

Robert E. Lee, Jefferson Davis and Stonewall Jackson, the three most famous Confederate heroes, have hundreds of memorials and monuments in public spaces throughout the United States dedicated in their memory.

Judah Philip Benjamin, the most significant Jewish political figure in the United States during the 19th century, often called the “brains of the Confederacy,” has four. One is a house that Benjamin never owned. One’s a rusted bell. None of them are statues of his likeness.

Though Judah Benjamin was a brilliant legal mind, a legendary orator and Confederate President Jefferson Davis’ right-hand man, it is likely that he has no major monuments because he alienated himself from both Jewish and non-Jewish Southerners.

“Non-Jews didn’t make statues of him because he was a Jew, and Jews didn’t make statues of him because he was intermarried and not really associated with the Jewish community,” said Jonathan Sarna, the Joseph H. & Belle R. Braun Professor of American Jewish History at Brandeis University and author of “Lincoln and the Jews.” …

Because of his less-than-revered status, Benjamin has not become a focus of the current movement to remove statues of Confederate figures that has roiled the nation and shaken President Trump’s administration. …

Some historians say Jews should be more aware of how their history was deeply intertwined with the Confederacy — and slavery.

In general, Jews were more welcomed in the South than in the North because Southern WASP elites saw themselves as an agrarian aristocracy and thus viewed Jews as valued mercantile complements. For example, Birmingham, Alabama had both a German Jewish country club and a Russian Jewish country club.

In contrast, post-Puritan Northern elites saw Jews as commercial competitors.

“It’s hard to excise Judah Benjamin’s memory from the American Jewish consciousness, because it’s not in the American Jewish consciousness,” said Robert Rosen, who recounted Benjamin’s life in the book “The Jewish Confederates.”

There is only one known statue of a Jewish Confederate leader. It depicts David Levy Yulee, an industrialist, plantation owner and Confederate senator from Florida, and it shows him sitting on a bench. The statue commemorates a railway he built, not his Senate service. It stands in the small northern Florida town of Fernandina Beach (population: 12,500), and so far no one has suggested toppling it.

Levy Yulee, who was some kind of cousin of Benjamin, preceded Benjamin as the first Jewish U.S. Senator. An ardent Secessionist, the Union locked Levy Yulee up after the Civil War for about 9 months. But then they let him out and later President Grant came and stayed at his house as a gesture of reconciliation between the North and the South.

Similarly, Benjamin’s boss, Jefferson Davis, was imprisoned for a couple of years.

In contrast, Benjamin got out while the getting was still good in April 1865. In English exile, he wrote a bestselling legal textbook, Benjamin on Sales, and became a highly paid lion of the British bar. But his fleeing abroad rather than taking his lumps at home was considered dishonorable in America.

… “Judah Benajmin is a great example of how Southern Jews were assimilated into Southern society,” said Robert Rosen. “But of course they accepted all the values of that society, including slavery.”

While the majority of Southern Jews owned slaves, of those most only had house slaves. Benjamin, however, owned a 300-acre plantation and 140 slaves to grow and harvest sugarcane on it. (One of his biographers has asserted that he was a “humane” slaveowner.)

It was hard to be a humane sugar plantation owner. The crop hierarchy of humanity went tobacco > cotton > sugar.

Benjamin was elected to the U.S. Senate from Louisiana, and in the Senate he gained a reputation as a legendary orator and as an apologist for slavery. One member of Congress called him “an Israelite with Egyptian principles.” …

Benjamin had many roles in the Confederacy, moving from Attorney General to Secretary of War to Secretary of State. He was considered Jefferson Davis’ right-hand-man. …

“He was discreet, loyal, a workaholic, somebody you wanted on your side,” Rosen said. In his book, Rosen writes that Benjamin negotiating loans for the cash-starved Confederacy and was the South’s “spymaster,” possibly even organizing a plot to kidnap Abraham Lincoln in the waning days of the war.

Various conspiracy theorists have theorized that Benjamin was involved in the John Wilkes Booth conspiracy to assassinate Lincoln, but Benjamin had ordered burned all the records of the Confederate spy service a week before, so we’ll never know. (The Confederate government had been outraged by an unsporting 1864 Union raid intended to assassinate Davis and Benjamin.)

Secretary of War Edwin Stanton acted decisively to have tried and hanged the obviously guilty lower level conspirators, but didn’t pursue the wispier trails into the highest levels of the Confederacy.

“He certainly was the most important person in the government other than Davis,” Rosen added.

Benjamin was also held in low regard by many for another reason: many historians now suspect that he was gay. This hypothesis, says Sarna, “explains a lot of things.”

For one, Benjamin burned all his personal documents on his deathbed.

… Furthermore, the stated reason for Benjamin’s early dismissal from Yale was “ungentlemanly conduct,” a common euphemism for being gay in the 19th century. Perhaps most tellingly, Benjamin’s wife lived in Paris for nearly five decades during their marriage. He visited her and their daughter once a year at most. …

There was at least one attempt to raise a real statue of Benjamin — but it wasn’t even by a Jewish organization. In August 1910, the Daily States, a New Orleans evening newspaper, suggested in an editorial that the city’s planned memorial to Jefferson Davis include a statue of Benjamin on the other side of Canal Street, in downtown New Orleans. “We refer to Judah P. Benjamin, one of the most remarkable men of his age, and one of the most intellectual his splendid race has produced,” the editorial read. …

His face appears on the Confederacy’s two-dollar bill, issued in 1862, which can fetch about $25 on Ebay. … One Jewish alt-right blogger, known as Reactionary Jew, uses Benjamin’s face as his profile picture on Twitter.

Robert Rosen, Benjamin’s biographer, thinks it’s a shame that more American Jews do not know about the Jewish Confederate, even with his support for slavery.

“He was the most successful Jewish figure in American politics until [Louis] Brandeis,” Rosen said.

“If there were a statue, I would defend it,” he added. “Maybe I’ll build a statue, now that you’ve called me.”

It could. And these older, private, once-all-male colleges typically had very minimalist, but "noble", rules like "thou shall always act as a gentleman" as their student conduct code. So thus literally everything and anything that violated that rules was simply "ungentlemanly" behavior and cause for expulsion.

The moment the "Solid South" stopped voting old-line Dixie Democrat was the moment Confederate statuary became endangered. What happens now to all Confederate and Segregationist statuary in the US Capitol rotunda? We live in interesting times! Will ANTIFA be admitted into the Halls of Congress, carrying sledge hammers and guide ropes, when Kamala Harris becomes President of the United States?

Louis Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam started the myth that Jews ran the slave trade. Before that, for 300 years, this never occurred to any real historian. Jews were a tiny minority in Colonial America and didn't dominate any one trade. Even in stock brokerage in NY, the place where they were most dominant, only 5 of the 24 signers of the Buttonwood Agreement, which started the NY Stock Exchange, were Jewish, leaving 19 who were not. Sure many were merchants and they were no more opposed to slavery than their non-Jewish neighbors, but they didn't run the slave trade in particular. Stocks, bonds, sugar, cotton, etc. - merchants will sell you anything. Not all Jews were slave traders and not all slave traders were Jews. Very few in both cases because there just weren't a lot of Jews in America back then, period.

    JEWS AND THE SLAVE TRADE

"Prof. Martin was indeed correct when he said “75% of Jewish households owned slaves” or “more than twice as many Jews owned slaves as compared to whites (36%),” as these statistics were drawn from Ira Rosenwaike’s analysis that attempted to do an apples-to-apples comparison with Lee Soltow’s study, which focused on the 14 Southern slave states. It should be noted that it was these two Jewish scholars that decided to base their comparisons on the 14 Southern slave states and not Prof. Martin, who was merely relaying the results of these two studies.?"

Aaron Lopez (slave trader with something like 27 voyages/many hundreds of slaves) is buried there, ditto members of the Seixas and Levy slave trading families.

Emma Lazarus--whose sugar-plantation family built its wealth with the lives of human chattel (though admittedly many of those were white slaves, so don't count)--wrote poems commemorating the adjoining cemetery:

    http://www.tourosynagogue.org/history-learning/cemetery-literature

So I consider her poem slapped on the Statue of Liberty to be just another monument to slaveholders, slave traders, and excusers of slavery. Rip it off!

Maybe the SPLC can fork out $1M or so to commission a statue. At the intersection of Southern and Jewish, this oughta be right up their alley. Fighting racism these days is basically a make work activity akin to digging holes only to fill them up again, it’s not much of a stretch to build statues so they can be toppled.

Actually, the Coalition of the Right Fringe Groups should be erecting statues of what will happen to American Jews in the near future. Why? To remind them of their impending doom for assaulting our cultural sensibilities, infiltrating the media, and wreaking havoc on our political system. It would be a gas! Or, how about performance art like a flashmob or Pasta Art? The Fusilli Judah, anyone? Then again, those efforts require sophistication and planning. Maybe the Coalition of the Right Fringe Groups can put Cernovich in charge.

Asian-American doctor says white nationalists refuse her care

It's completely rational to refuse care from black or Hispanic physicians, given that they enter and graduate from medical school with worse credentials than white and Asian physicians as well as having higher rates of professional censure. From a purely treatment point of view, it makes no sense to do so with Asian-American doctors (foreign medical doctors are another story).

But I know firsthand an odd old white or black person or two from the rural South do so occasionally (my wife and I consult for hospitals sometimes). It's usually not outright refusal, but more crankiness and complaint.

Saying anyone is a member of the British bar is like saying one is a member if the American bar: there ain't ni such animal. The bars are othanised one level lower in the hierarchy (for states, territories, and Columbia here; likewise for the constituent bailiwicks there...).

    Strawman.

Neither the Nation of Islam, nor anyone else, ever claimed that the Jews, all by themselves, ran the slave trade.

It is true, however, that Jews were involved in the slave trade. In fact, they were massively disproportionately involved in the slave trade within the 18th century Anglo-Saxon world.

Jews were disproportionately located in towns heavily involved in the slave trade such as Newport Rhode Island, which boasts the oldest synagogue in America, or in towns which were the terminus of the trans-Atlantic slave trade, including Charleston South Carolina, which had the largest Jewish population in America until the 1820s, and where Moroccan Jews founded the flagship newspaper of the fire-eaters, the Charleston Mercury. Beginning in 1640, Barbados had the first openly Jewish community in the Anglo-Saxon world after Edward I's 1290 expulsion order. Jamaica, the Leeward Islands, and Savannah Georgia all had Jewish communities.

The delegates from the slave trading and slave importing states where Jews were concentrated, Rhode Island, South Carolina, and Georgia, removed Jefferson's condemnation of the trans-Atlantic slave trade from the Declaration of Independence, and inserted a shameful clause into the Constitution which prevented congress from outlawing the slave trade (or, for that matter, from restricting any immigration), before January 1, 1808.

Adam Smith wrote in 1776, In Wealth of Nations, the following:

The Portugueze Jews, persecuted by the Inquisition, stripped of their fortunes, and banished to Brazil, introduced by their example some sort of order and industry among the transported felons and strumpets by whom that colony was originally peopled, and taught them the culture of the sugar-cane.

Though this does not mean they ran the slave trade, they did introduce the 'culture of the sugar-cane' which was the biggest customer of the slave trade. You have to give credit where credit is due.
    , @Lot
I agree with you, but the link said half of southern jews owned slaves. If true, that is somewhat higher than the general white southern population. That number itself is subject to controversy, a recent study suggests that owning one or two house slaves was more common in the South than previously thought.
    , @utu
Prominent role of Jews in slavery should not be surprising. Jews developed the know-how of slavery business long before Europeans entered it in 16 century on the Western African route. Jews unlike Brits, Dutch and Spaniard had a long history being involve in slaver, at leasts as far back as early Middle Ages. The Jewish slavers travelled throughout Europe buying slaves to be delivered to Muslim Spain, Northern Africa and Middle East. The main slave markets of Medieval Europe were in Prague, Lyon and Venice. Slaves were brought from Central and Eastern Europe and other per-Christian parts. Slavery of pagans was not directly prohibited by Church but many Christians were enclaved as well. The Catholic Church as it was strengthening its political power was limiting this practice but money must have been really good because the laws agains slavery were violated. In Europe there were no Muslim slavers because they were not allowed to travel in Christian Europe. So the job was done by Jews. In Prague there was a certain priest who was an activist against slavery. He was however chased out and had to seek refuge in Poland where he later was killed by pagan Prussians in 997. He later was canonized and called St. Adalbert. In 12 century bronze doors illustrating his life was erected in Gniezno Cathedral in Poland. Out of 18 panels two show his activities against Jewish slavers:

Panel 7: He has a vision of Christ telling him to save Christians from slavery by the Jewish traders.
Panel 8: He pleads with the Duke of Bohemia for the release of Christians slaves by their Jewish masters.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gniezno_Doors

After the consolidation of power by Catholic church and Reconquista of Iberian peninsula slavery of Europeans was eliminated from the European continent. However there was an active slavery center in Crimea where mostly Slavic, Balto-Slavic and slaves from Finland were traded to Ottoman empire. Istanbul, Bagdad, Damascus and Cairo were full of Slavic slaves. Again Jews played prominent role in this slavery route though the actual procuring of slaves by kidnaping was done by Tartars. Finally Catherine The Great put stop to this practice the she conquered Crimea and annexed it to Russia in 18 century.

It should not be surprising that when West African slavery route to the New World was opened in 16 century Jewish role (as Jews or Marranos) was very prominent. They were dealing with Muslims and Arabs in this business for at least 1000 years.

    , @Yojimbo/Zatoichi
A broken clock being right twice a day. In this case, there's some accuracy. Jews had a hand in running the industry or business of slavery. Not the only hand, but they were there, and overrepesented compared to their overall numbers. It goes like this.

Prior to the Ellis Island immigration, more Jews lived in the South than in the North.

During the Antebellum era, the only way one could make tons of money in the South was by being directly (or even indirectly connected) to the Cotton industry (or Sugar, or Tabacco) which in affect means that one couldn't make tons of money in the South unless they benefitted from slavery, because the South's entire economy was based on slave labor.

I mean, people can't suggest 'Well, it was possible to make a gazillion bucks in...in...in selling overalls to and farming goods". That's all fine and well, but the South's major agriculture was tied up in plantations (slavery). So the Hattfields and McCoys, while they were there in the Appalacians and the Ozarks, there weren't enough of them to make a businessman independently wealthy. Also, they were dirt poor, which would mean that they didn't have money, but had to barter (trade goods in exchange for crops type of thing).

I believe that Steve covered this paradox of Jewish involvement in the Southern slavery economy some time ago. Lever Brothers, for example, originally sold Cotton Futures. Well, that's directly tied to slavery.

Again, living in the South before the Civil War and rich = only one way that person became wealthy because he benefitted in some way from slavery.
    , @AM

Louis Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam started the myth that Jews ran the slave trade. Before that, for 300 years, this never occurred to any real historian.

Other people have done a great job at debunking this. Colonial Jews were here in America to do what they do historically: sell things, including highly lucrative slaves, and run banks. (Thanks by the way, for pointing out the highly disproportionate number of Jews on the first stock market.) Yes, really some slave markets did close on Jewish holidays, just like you can't buy diamonds from some places on Jewish holidays.

In other words, accepting this and moving on is helpful, rather than "Islam did it!" That's the sort of stuff Muslims do, except they're claiming that the "Jews did it!" You've used the exact same arguments that turn up with them when they make brain dead comments like "The Quran encourages peace"

Anyway, it turns out the greatest crimes of humanity were not a)owning slaves and b)being racist. If the Holocaust weren't already being force fed onto Western Society like so many geese destined for pate, I'd even give you that one as far more important issue than slavery or racism. Although this particular goose is ready to ease up on her liver at least for a while.

  18. Another interesting fact about Judah Benjamin is that he is apparently the first American (or former American) to be given the honor of burial in Père Lachaise cemetery in Paris — subsequently joined by fellow Americans Jim Morrison, Isadora Duncan, Gertrude Stein, Alice B. Toklas, and Richard Wright.

Perhaps the French can be prevailed upon to remove his tombstone?

High IQ people (not just Jews) have that kind of ability to land on their feet because they have valuable skills and are adaptable to new environments. Dumb Arabs move to a new country and stay on welfare for 3 generations because they can't figure out how to adapt to something other than goat farming. Their roots are torn off and they wither. Jews are not rootless, they just have the ability to re-root in whatever soil they are transplanted.

Very few in both cases because there just weren't a lot of Jews in America back then, period.

only 5 of the 24 signers of the Buttonwood Agreement, which started the NY Stock Exchange, were Jewish, leaving 19 who were not.

  21. There is a gigantic Judah P. Benjamin memorial in Belle Chasse Louisiana. It consists of a giant bell atop four columns.

In addition to existing statues and memorials, a new statue of David Yulee was unveiled in 2014.

Both Benjamin and Yulee were far more implicated in slave owning and, worse, the slave trade, than Robert E. Lee or Stonewall Jackson. Stonewall Jackson, for instance, only acquired three slaves of his own, and in each case he only purchased slaves who asked to be purchased. He purchased on a man named Albert who wanted to work for his freedom. Jackson agreed to purchase Albert, and then free him after he had earned his own purchase price. Albert came down with a protracted illness and could not work, and Jackson took care of him. He purchased an old woman named Amy who was about to be sold off, perhaps to a hellish plantation on the Gulf coast such as those owned by Benjamin and Yulee. This purchase was seen by Jackson’s friends as an act of pure charity. Said one friend “The cup of cold water you have ministered to this poor disciple may avail more in the Master’s eye than all the brilliant deeds with which you may glorify your countries battlefields.” He also purchased a four year old, learning disabled child named Emma, again because he was asked to as a matter of charity. Like his other two slaves, Emma was a financial loss for Jackson, whose wealth came from his Army pay, his pay as a professor of science atVMI, and his wise investments in banks and railroads. He also taught a Sunday school for Blacks, despite a Virginia law against teaching slaves to read and write. His prestige in Lexington was sufficient to keep the school open, despite the opposition of prominent lawyers.

Unlike Robert E. Lee, who played a distinguished role in the post-war rebuilding of the South, Benjamin and Yulee abandoned the South in its hour of need, fled to England, and received cushy sinecures from D’Israeli.

Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson were both heroes of the Mexican American war, each of whom arguably contributed more to American victory than any other officers of their respective ranks. Do you like having Texas, California, Colorado, Utah, Nevada, Arizona and New Mexico? Thank Lee and Jackson. Benjamin and Yulee never served.

And yet the Yulee statue and the Benjamin memorial are perfectly safe, while howling mobs attack the Lee and Jackson statues.

  22. Let’s not lose sight of the obvious: Benjamin wasn’t in combat. How many Confederate non-soldiers have statues at all? There’s Jeff Davis, of course, but he was the CSA President and acted as if he were a commander in the field. I think Alexander Stephens has one monument (aside from the one in the capitol, which is not CSA-related), and it’s located at his house.

Grant had a witty comment about that:

Longstreet was an entirely different man. He was brave, honest, intelligent, a very capable soldier, subordinate to his superiors, just and kind to his subordinates, but jealous of his own rights, which he had the courage to maintain. He was never on the lookout to detect a slight, but saw one as soon as anybody when intentionally given.

It may be that Longstreet was not sent to Knoxville for the reason stated, but because Mr. Davis had an exalted opinion of his own military genius, and thought he saw a chance of "killing two birds with one stone." On several occasions during the war he came to the relief of the Union army by means of his superior military genius.

Or maybe this is something that the Antifas and the Fas could agree on? As the article points out, there is a reason that there are no statues of Benjamin in the 1st place. There was little prejudice (and few Jews) in the Confederate era but by the time you get to the statue building era (roughly 1900 to 1929) you have Leo Frank, the KKK demonstrating against Jews, etc. The great Ellis Island wave of millions of huddled masses (from which most modern American Jews are descended) completely changed American attitudes towards Jews and anti-Semitism became much more prevalent. ( As Steve has pointed out, the German Jewish elite wasn't really all that wild about the huddled and smelly masses either.) But this reflected back on historic Jewish figures too - in that period the Sephardic Levy, who had saved Monticello from destruction, is retconned as a villain (complete with Yiddish accent) who cheated Jefferson's heirs out of their legacy. And no statues for Benjamin.

  25. My immigrant ancestor was the grandson of an Italian Jew. He settled in Tidewater Virginia and got on with the business of running plantations and owning slaves. Quite a number of influential Americans sprang from his loins, including boxer Muhamad Ali with whom I share a common ancestor around 1720. Another was a Tidewater architect who designed many of the finest mansions in that region which must be razed to the ground as relics of slavery.

The influence of the Jews in America’s westward expansion gets little attention. But their mercantile ways brought many consumer goods into the expanding frontier. The book “Pioneer Jews” by Fred Rochlan (who my father claims was a classmate of his in rural Nogales, Arizona in the 1930s) provides insight into this phenomenon.

In the Southwest there is a vein of Crypto Jews who emigrated to Mexico as part of Spain’s persecution of Jews and maintained their religion in private. Not unusual to see the first name Reuben among Hispanic families in New Mexico that trace their lineage back to the conquistadors.

Jews were also instrumental in running some of the many fine brothels throughout the mining towns of the West.

Lastly, Jewish cowboys were a feature of the cattle-centric Wild West, as noted in this contemporary campfire song :

A lot of Pecos Billing going on here. Remember, in 2017, the total percentage of Jews in the US is a whopping 2%. And that's about par for the course for them throughout their history. So to suggest there were thousands and thousands of them out in the arid/plains region when they've been vastly urban for millennia, begs the question, what exactly are some trying to sell, aside from BS. Well, I'm glad we've got that cleared up. The Governor of Georgia and the judge who sentenced him weren't persuaded he was guilty and the evidence against him began and ended with the word of a factory employee known to be of dubious character. He had no motive and no history of violence. Oh, and then there's the office messenger's account. I guess the senile old man was virtue signaling, or something something.

Beginning in 1640, Barbados had the first openly Jewish community in the Anglo-Saxon world after Edward I’s 1290 expulsion order. Jamaica, the Leeward Islands, and Savannah Georgia all had Jewish communities.

The delegates from the slave trading and slave importing states where Jews were concentrated, Rhode Island, South Carolina, and Georgia, removed Jefferson’s condemnation of the trans-Atlantic slave trade from the Declaration of Independence, and inserted a shameful clause into the Constitution which prevented congress from outlawing the slave trade (or, for that matter, from restricting any immigration), before January 1, 1808.

"It is true, however, that Jews were involved in the slave trade. In fact, they were massively disproportionately involved in the slave trade within the 18th century Anglo-Saxon world."

Willie F. Page, professor of African American Studies at Brooklyn College, noted that in Dutch Brazil, the Jews operated less than 6% of the plantations.

Seymour Drescher remarked in Immigrants And Minorities (July 1993) that Jews’ investment share in the Dutch West India Company “amounted to only 0.5 percent of the company’s capital”. Dutch historians Pieter Emmer and Johanes Postma have argued that “Jews had a very limited and subordinate roles even at the height of the Dutch slave trade in the 17th century.”

"Jews were disproportionately located in towns heavily involved in the slave trade such as Newport Rhode Island, which boasts the oldest synagogue in America..."

From 1709-1807, there are 934 recorded voyages in which Rhode Island merchants were responsible for procuring 106,000 slaves. Now, Jews arrived in Newport as early as 1758. On the eve of the Revolution, they were estimated to be around thirty families. According to records historian Eli Faber used (e.g. naval office shipping lists, censuses, tax records) that identified merchants and planters as Jewish, there were 347 slave ships sent to Africa by Rhode Island slave traders from 1761-1774, with 21 being funded by Aaron Lopez, a Portuguese Jew. That means 326 voyages were underwritten by non-Jews during this time frame. Of course, Jews played a role in the peddling of human flesh. The extent in this particular case is nominal compared to other ethnic groups.

"or in towns which were the terminus of the trans-Atlantic slave trade, including Charleston South Carolina, which had the largest Jewish population in America until the 1820s..."

Junius Rodriguez (The Historical Encyclopedia of World Slavery, Volume 1, ABC-CLIO, 1997) referenced…

“A few Jews even became prominent slave owning planters in the Old South…as successful as these Jewish Southerners were by Southern standards, they represent a very tiny percentage of the 20,000 Jews residing in the antebellum South who could, or would, ever aspire to own a slave. About 5,000 Jews owned one or more slaves – about 1.25 percent of all the slaveowners in the antebellum South…For those Jews who did own slaves, the records demonstrate that they were not significantly different from other masters in their treatments of their bondsmen.”

Note that the antebellum period covers the period before the Civil War, 1820-1860.

Regardless of factual accuracy, some would argue that these numbers are meaningless since they neglect to account for any other difference in demographics besides religion. For example, poorer families were less likely to own slaves than wealthier families.

If we account for all other factors, it ends up there is no statistically significant difference between Jews and the overall population in terms of slave ownership, especially since levels of slave ownership varied in the southern states and in southern cities. For example, this source (forward.com/articles/205455/slaves-of-charleston/?p=all) notes that in 1830 the proportion of Jewish residents of Charleston who owned slaves was similar to that of the general white population (83% versus 87%).

"The delegates from the slave trading and slave importing states where Jews were concentrated, Rhode Island, South Carolina, and Georgia, removed Jefferson’s condemnation of the trans-Atlantic slave trade from the Declaration of Independence, and inserted a shameful clause into the Constitution which prevented congress from outlawing the slave trade (or, for that matter, from restricting any immigration), before January 1, 1808."

Other than surprising since they were slave owners who sought to protect their investment and property.

Stocks, bonds, sugar, cotton, etc. - merchants will sell you anything. Not all Jews were slave traders and not all slave traders were Jews. Very few in both cases because there just weren't a lot of Jews in America back then, period.

… yet managed to be 21% of the 24 signers of the Buttonwood Agreement, which started the NY Stock Exchange.

If nobody wants to do a Judah P Benjamin biopic, how about this stirring tale of slavery in antebellum South Carolina:

Cohen set up his own sons on nearby plantations that rivaled some of the greatest in the South. Right around Lafayette’s visit in 1824, Mordecai Cohen bought Soldier’s Retreat, a large estate of over 1,000 acres overlooking the Ashley River for his son David. By the 1830s, David or “Davy” Cohen had taken over the estate in his own name and held slaves who worked his fields, emptied his slops and raised his children.

One of these slaves was a young man named Jim, who was not impressed by the Cohen wealth. Jim escaped from slavery and narrated the story of his life to northern abolitionists in one of the earliest abolitionist American slave narratives, 1838’s “Recollections of Slavery by a Runaway Slave,” a graphic account of torture and suffering. In his memoir, Jim gave particular attention to his experiences under the Cohen family, providing details that would help authenticate his own story and also indict the horror of the slave system.

Jim worked as a hostler or a groom for David Cohen but also did field work. He described David Cohen as a man of relentless vigilance: “He was in the habit of walking about at all hours of the night to find out who stole wood, or turnips, or hogs, or any thing else.” When he suspected anyone of thieving, the punishments were dire. One old man, Peter, was found stealing a few sticks of wood from David Cohen. Jim testified that Peter was whipped for hours until he was unconscious and then doused with brine before being chained in the stocks kept on the plantation for just such occasions.

After being on the receiving end of one especially cruel whipping by David Cohen’s overseer, Jim fled Soldier’s Retreat and hid with a community of black fugitives in the dense swamps. Recaptured after only few brief weeks of freedom, Jim was brutally punished with another whipping. When sympathetic interviewers later transcribed his story, they added a footnote testifying that the fugitive’s scars all over his body “appear as if pieces of flesh had been gouged out, and some are ridges or elevations of the flesh and skin. They could easily be felt through his clothing.”

Uncowed, however, he soon fled again, this time seeking out his sister at a nearby plantation. She told him that David Cohen had reportedly offered a $50 reward for his capture. Before she or Jim could contrive a plan for his safety, he was once again spotted and captured. This time, though, he wasn’t returned to Cohen’s Ashley River estate. He was instead taken to the Sugar House, a notorious workhouse jail in Charleston especially famous for its treadmill run by slave labor that not infrequently maimed and killed the weary people chained to its rotating pedals, as well as for other punishments so unsavory that genteel enslavers preferred them to be done out of sight. Jim described the whippings and torture being carried on continuously at all hours of the days and nights, such was the demand for the Sugar House services: “You may hear the whip and paddle there, all hours in the day. There’s no stopping.” He added: “I have heard a great deal said about hell, and wicked places, but I don’t think there is any worse hell than that sugar house.”

At the Sugar House, Mordecai Cohen was informed of Jim’s plight and after assessing the situation, sent for his son. David Cohen came in from his estate and stopped by the Sugar House. As Jim remembered it, “He told them to whip me twice a week till they had given me two hundred lashes. My back, when they went to whip me, would be full of scabs, and they whipped them off till I bled so that my clothes were all wet.” The guards were instructed to alternate bouts of whippings with days on the treadmill for several weeks.

David Cohen visited Jim in the Sugar House and determined that he was an unrepentant runaway who, no surprise, was rapidly losing value under the continual torture. Finally, after several attempts to sell him, in June 1837 David Cohen received $700 dollars from a speculator for young Jim. When your life price is bartered, you don’t forget the obscenity of the transaction; Jim was later able to find some satisfaction from the fact that David Cohen had sold him at a dramatic loss from his original purchase price.

Jim’s story then moved in dramatic quicks and starts. He was hired out to a railroad, escaped once again, and this time made it aboard a Boston–bound boat. He was harbored by abolitionists in Maine who recognized the publicity value a story such as his would have for their cause, and transcribed his story for the public. Although published anonymously, a runaway slave advertisement from the Charleston Courier of December 11, 1837 clearly identifies Jim as the fugitive who had been owned by Cohen and who never forgot his encounters with that family. It reads: “Fifty Dollar Reward. Runaway from the Subscriber, a few weeks ago, his fellow JIM, lately purchased from Mr. David D. Cohen, of Charleston.”

Cohen, born in Poland in 1763, began work as a young immigrant peddler in Charleston but rapidly rose in status and wealth. Eventually, he came to own many properties across the city and large estates on the nearby Ashley River. Revered as a philanthropist who especially supported the Charleston Orphan House, Cohen was a central figure not merely in the Jewish community of South Carolina, but also in the nation, embodying a new vision of what American citizenship and success might look like.

The moral price for Cohen’s success was his willing participation in the slave trade. While he never held the hundreds of field hands that other low country Carolina plantations of that time boasted, he owned enough people to maintain his properties and to keep his family comfortable. This wasn’t surprising: The percentage of Jewish Charlestonians who held slaves in 1830 (83%) was roughly the same as that of the general white population of the city (87%). In addition to Cohen’s extensive mercantile and real estate endeavors, he was deeply involved in the slave trade — the auctioning, mortgaging and leasing of babies, parents and families. Orphans of color evidently were of no special interest to him.

And then there’s the role played by Northern Jews in the antebellum era:

But missing from this history is the congregation’s first prominent spiritual leader: Rabbi Morris Raphall. A celebrated biblical and rabbinic scholar, during the mid-1800s Raphall was the leading rabbi not only in New York—then the home of a quarter of the nation’s Jews—but in the country. He lectured extensively across the United States and was the only rabbi prior to the Civil War to be invited to make a congressional benediction. So, why has B’nai Jeshurun all but forgotten him?

Perhaps because Raphall was an outspoken proponent of slavery.

I encountered Raphall and his many sermons, lectures, and toasts—he seemed to appear at every religious and fraternal Jewish event—in researching the early history of New York Jewry for a new book. So, I was intrigued with his near disappearance from American Jewish history, and from the history of such an important synagogue. To understand this historical gap, we must return to Jan. 4, 1861, a bitterly cold day in New York City.

That evening, the chill outside only highlighted the contrast with the nation’s sizzling political temperature. South Carolina had already seceded, and six more states were poised to do so in the following weeks. President Buchanan’s efforts at preservation of the Union were weak and unavailing, while President-Elect Lincoln would not budge from his position against the extension of slavery into the American territories. The nation was beginning to unravel.

Into this breach stepped Raphall. Perhaps fearing what national disunion would do to America’s Jewish community, Raphall stood in his sanctuary on that blustery Friday evening and delivered a sermon that would resound throughout the United States. Addressing his congregants on the issue of the Bible and slavery, Raphall stated that while he was no “friend to slavery in the abstract” and even less “to the practical working of slavery,” his personal feelings were not germane. Slavery, he argued, was the oldest form of social relationship aside from family ties.

Raphall’s position on the subject wasn’t surprising in the context of his overall conservative bent. He opposed the nascent women’s rights movement, publicly encouraging women to “meekly rest content with [the] humble lot” that God chose for them. Though a follower of Moses Mendelssohn’s belief in the Jewish enlightenment—a doctrine that allowed Jews to participate in modern society within a traditional framework—he vehemently preached that the Reform movement, which in the early 1850s was headquartered in New York, posed a mortal threat to the survival of Judaism.

And his politics very likely reflected the views of his congregants. From its modest beginnings as a congregation of a few hundred Jews, the congregation grew larger and wealthier over time. By 1850 it had moved to Greene Street in the fashionable Washington Square neighborhood, where its members raised $50,000 (churches in that day generally cost less than $20,000 to build) to erect a sanctuary with a 56-foot-high dome featuring windows with ornamented paintings. By 1861, a community founded under the aura of Jewish Jeffersonian republicanism had been replaced by an affluent, conservative membership—one that was able to pay Raphall the princely salary of $2,000 per year.

It was in that domed sanctuary that Raphall delivered his notorious sermon. After his opening disclaimer, he turned to Jewish scripture, declaring that the biblical verse where God commands an owner to give Sabbath rest to “thy male slave and thy female slave,” clearly condoned slavery. He also stated that the Bible differentiated between Hebrew bondsmen, whose servitude was limited, and non-Hebrew slaves and their progeny, who were to remain bondsmen during the lives of their master, his children, and his children’s children. Non-Hebrew slaves, he argued, could be compared to black slaves in the American South. Hebraic law permitted masters to discipline their slaves, short of murder or disfigurement, and required that a slave absconding from South Carolina to New York must be a restored to his owner as would a slave who had fled from Dan to Beersheba. The Jewish law that forbade Hebrews from returning an escaped slave, by Raphall’s lights, only referred to slaves fleeing from foreign lands.

Responding to Reverend Henry Ward Beecher’s assertion that the Bible actually opposed slavery, Raphall proclaimed: “How dare you, in the face and sanction and protection afforded to slave property in the Ten Commandments, how dare you denounce slaveholding as a sin?” What right “do you have to insult and exasperate thousands of God-fearing, law-abiding citizens,” he said, equating a citizen of the South with the status of a murderer. While he cautioned southerners to guard their bondsman from sexual aggression, hunger, and excess demands of their labor, Raphall emphatically contended that the biblical sanction of slave property remained relevant in 1861.

His words created a sensation. Three New York newspapers printed the complete sermon, and the New York Times published lengthy excerpts. The Rev. Hugh Brown of East Salem, N.Y., observed, “the impressions on the minds of some is, that he must know the Hebrew of the Bible so profoundly that it is absolutely impossible for him to be mistaken on the subject of slavery; and that what he affirms respecting it is as true almost as the world of God itself.”

Two weeks later, Raphall gave his sermon as a speech before members of the Democratic Party and the pro-South American Society for Promotion of National Unity. In attendance were advocates of national reconciliation in harmony with southern demands, including the banker August Belmont, and prominent pro-slavery Jews from Richmond, Montgomery, and New Orleans. The artist and inventor Samuel B. Morse presided. Dr. Bernard Ilowy of Baltimore, highly respected for his biblical expertise, endorsed Raphall’s position. Rabbi Simon Tuska of Mobile, Ala., stated that his sermon contained “the most forceful arguments in justification of the slavery of the African race.” Southern sympathizers dispersed the discourse throughout the nation.

In his opinion on Lincoln and the issue of slavery, Raphall was not alone among Jewish leaders. Diplomat, playwright, and journalist Mordecai M. Noah, the “most important Jew in America” during the 1830s and 1840s, according to his biographer Jonathan D. Sarna, wrote that blacks were “anatomically and mentally inferior to the white” and could find contentment only in servile labor. Noah dreaded the thought of a slave revolt and viciously condemned abolitionists. Emmanuel Hart, the first Jewish congressman from New York in the 1850s, was a leader of the conservative “hunker” Democrats, a faction that opposed any agitation against slavery and worked to uphold the interests of the slaveholding states. Editor Robert Lyon of the Asmonean, a self-described progressive who hired Reform Judaism’s leading proponent, Isaac Mayer Wise, as his literary editor, endorsed James Buchanan in 1856 as a “progressionist,” defended the Fugitive Slave Act, and called abolitionists “the foul Fiend which stalks among us.” Lyon included among the abolitionists both “Frederick Douglass the ******,” and a “heterogeneous stew of fanatics and imposters.” The notion of black suffrage was, he said, “preposterous.”

Still, many in the North were outraged by Raphall’s view. Abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison published a poem that asked Raphall “Has thou forgot the sorrows of thy race.” Horace Greeley, publisher of the New York Tribune, recommended that Raphall endure “twenty-four hours of the Spanish inquisition” to “materially open his eyes” to the realities of slavery. And a significant minority of Republican Jews hazarded their careers to take on the Democratic establishment. Many, though not all, were centered at Manhattan’s Reform synagogue, Temple Emanu-El, whose beliefs no longer required either a literalist or rabbinic interpretation of Jewish scripture. Michael Heilprin of Brooklyn, a biblical scholar versed in the new biblical criticism central to the Reform movement, expressed regret that Raphall’s “sacrilegious” ideas had not vanished among the “scum.” Heilprin termed the morals of slavery’s defenders “depraved” and the minds of their “mammon–worshiping followers … debauched.” Citing German Jewish scholars, Heilprin challenged the literalist, ahistorical approach to Jewish texts behind Raphall’s reasoning. Raphall, he contended, misconstrued even the biblical word for servant. (The word Raphall translated as slave also designated court officers and royal ambassadors.) B’nai Jeshurun’s rabbi also overlooked Moses’ words to the Israelites: “Forget not that ye have been slaves in Egypt.”

But Heilprin represented a minority outlook. Raphall’s sermon reflected the interests of a majority of New York Jewry’s interests: New York’s booming economy, the cause of the recent wealth of many of the city’s most prominent Jewish citizens, including many members of B’nai Jeshurun, was tied to the southern trade; a civil war threatened personal catastrophe. Moreover, many Jews were in the garment industry, a trade directly attached to the South. Jews also resented the seemingly ever-present Protestant missionaries bent on converting the Jews. Strong-willed Protestantism and the Republican Party were seen as deeply conjoined. Furthermore, Jews feared that their political liberty, greater in America than any other part of the world, would be threatened if the Constitution, which they identified with the Union, were to fall. Compromise was the better solution, even if it meant giving in to Southern demands. Thus, along with the rest of New York City, Jews in 1860 voted more than two to one against Lincoln and the Republican Party.

After war broke out, Raphall strongly condemned rebellious southerners as committing “a sin before God.” He met personally with Lincoln, and his son enlisted and was badly wounded. However, as hostilities continued, month after month and then year after year, Raphall’s early patriotism turned to blame for both sides: “Demagogues, fanatics and a party press” of North and South had, he said, mired the republic in “the third year of a destructive but needless sectional war which has armed brother against brother and consigned hundreds of thousands to an untimely grave.”

Though this does not mean they ran the slave trade, they did introduce the ‘culture of the sugar-cane’ which was the biggest customer of the slave trade. You have to give credit where credit is due.

Cohen, both savvy and civic-minded, volunteered his sets of gold plates and silver for a banquet to honor the general.

Let's not lose sight of the obvious: Benjamin wasn't in combat. How many Confederate non-soldiers have statues at all? There's Jeff Davis, of course, but he was the CSA President and acted as if he were a commander in the field. I think Alexander Stephens has one monument (aside from the one in the capitol, which is not CSA-related), and it's located at his house.

There’s Jeff Davis, of course, but he was the CSA President and acted as if he were a commander in the field.

Davis had an exalted opinion of his own military genius, and thought he saw a chance of “killing two birds with one stone.” On several occasions during the war he came to the relief of the Union army by means of his superior military genius.

While the majority of Southern Jews owned slaves, ...

That seems like a pretty big statement given how we are told that less than 5 percent of Southerners owned slaves.

That’s a fallacy: only heads of households owned slaves, but it included a substantial portion of households, perhaps even the majority. Children and the majority of women couldn’t by definition be heads of households, so the majority of the population couldn’t have been slave owners.

    Here's Yulee's sugar plantation:

Yulee Sugar Mill Ruins Historic State Park is a Florida State Park located in Homosassa, off U.S. 19. It contains the ruins of a sugar plantation owned by David Levy Yulee.[2] Yulee was a delegate of the Florida Territorial Legislative Council. After Florida became a state, he was elected by the legislature in 1845 to the US Senate, becoming the first American of Jewish heritage to serve there. After Florida seceded from the Union, Yulee served in the Confederate Congress. He is credited with having developed a network of railroads that tremendously boosted the state's economy.
At Homosassa, Yulee established a sugarcane plantation, which was destroyed during the American Civil War. The original plantation covered more than 5,000 acres (2,000 ha), and was worked by approximately 1,000 enslaved African Americans. They raised sugarcane, citrus, and cotton. The large mill (which was steam-driven) ran from 1851 to 1864. It produced sugar, syrup and molasses, the latter used in making rum.[3]
At the park, the stonework (foundation, well and 40-foot chimney) of the mill, iron gears, a cane press, and some of the other machinery remain.[3] The site was added to the National Register of Historic Places on August 12, 1970.[1]

I agree with you, but the link said half of southern jews owned slaves. If true, that is somewhat higher than the general white southern population. That number itself is subject to controversy, a recent study suggests that owning one or two house slaves was more common in the South than previously thought.

I think if you adjusted for socioeconomic status and/or region, Jewish slave ownership would have been line with others. There were not a lot of poor Jews up in the mountains where slave ownership was less common.

Again, Jews were just rare period - I gave the stats on another thread yesterday. Of large plantation owners who owned hundred of slaves, the Jews were maybe 1/4 of 1 % of the total.

This page gives the percentage of families owning slaves by state in 1860: http://www.civil-war.net/pages/1860_census.html

Here are the questions on the 1860 census: https://www.census.gov/history/www/through_the_decades/index_of_questions/1860_1.html
Here is a page also showing the additional schedules with actual sample images: https://www.census.gov/history/www/through_the_decades/questionnaires/1860_2.html

Per the first link the 1850 slave schedule was the same and this page has those questions: https://www.census.gov/history/www/through_the_decades/index_of_questions/1850_1.html

Seems to me this data should be definitive on this topic (I am curious where the "controversy" comes from). Unfortunately there were no religious affiliation questions on that census.

The answers on this page look well reasoned and referenced: https://history.stackexchange.com/questions/17711/jewish-slave-owners-in-the-united-states

The estimates I've read--not any kind of antebellum reader/scholar--were about 25% of households. But most of those only had 1-3 slaves. Essentially the "hired man" and/or maid, cook.

The plantation owners who were politically prominent the and drove secession were the 1%.

    That sounds plausible.

Benjamin got out while the getting was still good in April 1865. In English exile, he wrote a bestselling legal textbook, Benjamin on Sales, and became a highly paid lion of the British bar.

So zippidy-doo-dah he hightails it from the South to England, and manages to become successful there, as well. I dunno, it's almost like he was a rootless cosmopolitan or something.

You say that like it’s a bad thing. Would you have preferred that he be a broken man, reduced to begging in the streets?

Dumb Arabs move to a new country and stay on welfare for 3 generations because they can’t figure out how to adapt to something other than goat farming. Their roots are torn off and they wither. Jews are not rootless, they just have the ability to re-root in whatever soil they are transplanted.

You're conflating the ability to land on one's feet in a new place with the tendency to abscond and flee. They're not the same thing. Fleeing places frequently when trouble ensues and not sleeping in the bed one makes selects for a tendency to be not as attentive to and mindful of the long term prospects, health, and well-being of particular places. It's why Jews, despite their high IQ and disproportionate wealth, power, and influence, seem so short sighted in the policies they tend to support.

Louis Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam started the myth that Jews ran the slave trade.

“It is true, however, that Jews were involved in the slave trade. In fact, they were massively disproportionately involved in the slave trade within the 18th century Anglo-Saxon world.”

“Jews were disproportionately located in towns heavily involved in the slave trade such as Newport Rhode Island, which boasts the oldest synagogue in America…”

“or in towns which were the terminus of the trans-Atlantic slave trade, including Charleston South Carolina, which had the largest Jewish population in America until the 1820s…”

“The delegates from the slave trading and slave importing states where Jews were concentrated, Rhode Island, South Carolina, and Georgia, removed Jefferson’s condemnation of the trans-Atlantic slave trade from the Declaration of Independence, and inserted a shameful clause into the Constitution which prevented congress from outlawing the slave trade (or, for that matter, from restricting any immigration), before January 1, 1808.”

Other than surprising since they were slave owners who sought to protect their investment and property.

I agree with you, but the link said half of southern jews owned slaves. If true, that is somewhat higher than the general white southern population. That number itself is subject to controversy, a recent study suggests that owning one or two house slaves was more common in the South than previously thought.

Seems to me this data should be definitive on this topic (I am curious where the “controversy” comes from). Unfortunately there were no religious affiliation questions on that census.

The answers on this page look well reasoned and referenced: https://history.stackexchange.com/questions/17711/jewish-slave-owners-in-the-united-states
Worth a look for anyone who is interested in understanding the reality rather than just reflexively damning or excusing Jews.

  89. Judah Benjamin was a Jew money man for the Confederacy. Benjamin owned a sugar plantation and owned dozens of slaves. Benjamin has perhaps served as a role model for the Jews who now populate the ruling class of the American Empire.

Judah Benjamin was a harbinger of sorts for Jews such as money man Stephen A. Schwarzman. The New York Times did a story about the political influence that Schwarzman has as CEO of Blackstone Group. The story recounts how Schwarzman told President Trump to keep Obama’s unlawful administrative amnesty for illegal alien invaders in place.

    From the New York Times:

Mr. Schwarzman speaks with Mr. Trump as much as once a week, typically about the economy though also about social policy, including a conversation in which Mr. Schwarzman advised the president to continue shielding young undocumented immigrants from deportation, according to a person briefed on their calls.

    https://www.nytimes.com/2017/08/19/business/the-benefits-of-standing-by-the-president.html?mcubz=3

Schwarzman is one of the Jews who is telling President Trump to abandon White Core Americans on foreign policy, immigration policy and trade policy. White Core Americans want legal immigration reduced and illegal alien invaders deported. White Core Americans want job-killing, sovereignty-sapping trade deal scams to be stopped. White Core Americans want no more unnecessary wars in the Middle East, or anywhere else for that matter.

Schwarzman is CEO of Blackstone Group. A Blackstone is famous in Britain for writing on the English constitution. The English constitution is like the poem about the man walking up the stairs who wasn’t there. Funny to hear Judah Benjamin is also famous for writing a law book concerning commerce and trade in England.

President Trump should stop listening to Blackstone Group CEO Stephen Schwarzman. President Trump should listen to a lecture on the history of Judah Benjamin instead of listening to Schwarzman.

Black researcher, Dr. Tony Martin, let’s us know who the prime sellers & owners of slaves really were, Jews.
Dr. Tony Martin – The Jewish Role in the African Slave Trade

    JEWS AND THE SLAVE TRADE

    http://wethoughttheywerewhite.weebly.com/jews–the-slave-trade.html

“Prof. Martin, who was merely relaying the results of these two studies.?”

The influence of the Jews in America's westward expansion gets little attention. But their mercantile ways brought many consumer goods into the expanding frontier. The book "Pioneer Jews" by Fred Rochlan (who my father claims was a classmate of his in rural Nogales, Arizona in the 1930s) provides insight into this phenomenon.

In the Southwest there is a vein of Crypto Jews who emigrated to Mexico as part of Spain's persecution of Jews and maintained their religion in private.

Don't Fiddle With Yiddle or He'll Riddle Your Middle

There at the rest stop was a plaque telling the story of Jew Jake, the first white man to permanently settle in those parts. If we account for all other factors, it ends up there is no statistically significant difference between Jews and the overall population in terms of slave ownership, especially since levels of slave ownership varied in the southern states and in southern cities.

Toklas, and Richard Wright.

Perhaps the French can be prevailed upon to remove his tombstone?

  101. Jews owned slaves and supported the Confederacy? Yes. Ain’t you done watch that Zelig movie? Jews are like a good utility player in baseball; they can do it all.

WASPs usually identified as New Englanders had ancestors from the mid-Atlantic who made big loot in the slavery business? You betcha. A Bush ancestor out of Baltimore was a slave ship captain and a slave merchant.

The Ancestral Link Between the Bush Family and the Slave Trade Is Confirmed https://www.theatlantic.com/national/archive/2013/06/bush-family-ancestor-slave-trader/314062/?utm_source=twb

    From The Atlantic:

If anything, the fact that Thomas Walker was part of their direct family line only makes the Bush story more remarkable, since they were lucky he even lived long enough to have three children. Indeed, it seems Walker was almost as cruel to his fellow sailors as he was to the slaves he bought and sold. A contemporary account of his death says, “There could not possibly have been a more inhuman monster than this Walker. Many a poor seaman has been brought by him to an untimely end.” That’s probably why his own crew members shot him and threw his body overboard in the middle of voyage in 1797.

  106. … Furthermore, the stated reason for Benjamin’s early dismissal from Yale was “ungentlemanly conduct,” a common euphemism for being gay in the 19th century.

The “ungentlemanly conduct” could also have been (and more likely was) something like cheating on an exam.

Robert Rosen, Benjamin’s biographer, thinks it’s a shame that more American Jews do not know about the Jewish Confederate, even with his support for slavery.

“He was the most successful Jewish figure in American politics until [Louis] Brandeis,” Rosen said.

What about Bernard Baruch? Unlike Brandeis, he never held a Constitutional office, but he was an adviser to presidents from Wilson through Truman. Born in South Carolina, Baruch also had Confederate heritage. His father, Simon, served as a surgeon in the Confederate army. Bernard Baruch endowed a prize in the name of his mother, offered by the United Daughters of the Confederacy (of which she had been an early and active member) to authors of books on Confederate history.

Shall the Baruch commemorative bench in Lafayette Park, dedicated to him by the Boy Scouts on his 90th birthday in 1960, now be torn out? Perhaps Baruch College of the City University of New York will face the demand that it be re-named. And this is to say nothing of the chairs in medicine at Columbia, Clemson, NYU, and elsewhere named after his father, an actual Confederate officer.

  118. “Jews were more welcomed in the South than in the North because Southern WASP elites saw themselves as an agrarian aristocracy and thus viewed Jews as valued mercantile complements.

In contrast, post-Puritan Northern elites saw Jews as commercial competitors.”

In the Antebellum era, the South was free trade because its entire regional economy was dedicated to the cotton industry and little much else. Therefore, merchants and especially Jews helped to secure trade good in exchange for Southern cotton.

The North was by this time pro-tarriff, and wanted to keep out foreign goods at the expense of American industry. First expounded by Alexander Hamilton as the US’s “infant industries” needing protection, and later devised by US Senator Henry Clay as the “American System”. Lincoln’s hero was Henry Clay and Lincoln himself was pro-tarriff.

“the stated reason for Benjamin’s early dismissal from Yale was “ungentlemanly conduct,” a common euphemism for being gay in the 19th century.”

A myth. There weren’t a large population of gays back in the day. It sounds like the author is trying to get his compadres to appreciate the first Jewish Congressman, but is trying to get around the fact that he owned slaves. So he has to resort to a politically correct assumption to make in 21st century.

“Comee on, guys, give him a break.”
“He owned slaves. Why should we? What’d he ever do for us?”
“But he was gay. He had that going for him.”

There was really no concept of "being gay" in the 19th century. They understood that men might sometimes commit crimes against nature or buggery but this did not make them "gay", just men who had committed an unnatural act.

I don't think there is any real basis to assume that "ungentlemanly conduct" meant "being gay" (or being involved in buggery) in Judah's case. Everyone until very recently assumed that it was something involving card playing or cheating at cards or stealing or something like that. Part of being a gentleman was that you didn't gossip about other gentlemen, even those expelled - you expelled them and never spoke of them again, so the real reason is lost to history but "being gay" is almost surely retconned history just like "all of Sally Hemings's children are 100% for sure those of Thomas Jefferson" is modern retconned history.

    Orwell understood: ‘

Who controls the past controls the future: who controls the present controls the past,”’ repeated Winston obediently.

‘“Who controls the present controls the past,”’ said O’Brien, nodding his head with slow approval. ‘Is it your opinion, Winston, that the past has real existence?’

A broken clock being right twice a day. In this case, there’s some accuracy. Jews had a hand in running the industry or business of slavery. Not the only hand, but they were there, and overrepesented compared to their overall numbers. It goes like this.

Prior to the Ellis Island immigration, more Jews lived in the South than in the North.

During the Antebellum era, the only way one could make tons of money in the South was by being directly (or even indirectly connected) to the Cotton industry (or Sugar, or Tabacco) which in affect means that one couldn’t make tons of money in the South unless they benefitted from slavery, because the South’s entire economy was based on slave labor.

I mean, people can’t suggest ‘Well, it was possible to make a gazillion bucks in…in…in selling overalls to and farming goods”. That’s all fine and well, but the South’s major agriculture was tied up in plantations (slavery). So the Hattfields and McCoys, while they were there in the Appalacians and the Ozarks, there weren’t enough of them to make a businessman independently wealthy. Also, they were dirt poor, which would mean that they didn’t have money, but had to barter (trade goods in exchange for crops type of thing).

I believe that Steve covered this paradox of Jewish involvement in the Southern slavery economy some time ago. Lever Brothers, for example, originally sold Cotton Futures. Well, that’s directly tied to slavery.

Again, living in the South before the Civil War and rich = only one way that person became wealthy because he benefitted in some way from slavery.

A Lexington, Kentucky statue of former United States Senator and Vice-President John C. Breckinridge is one of the after we take down Lee, Washington, and Jefferson targets.

“John C. Breckinridge rose to prominence during one of the most turbulent times in our nation’s history. Widely respected, even by his enemies, for his dedication to moderate liberalism, Breckinridge’s charisma and integrity led to his election as Vice President at age 35, the youngest ever in America’s history.”

“Breckinridge: Statesman, Soldier, Symbol is the quintessential biography of one of Kentucky’s great moderates. Historian William C. Davis sheds light on Breckinridge’s life throughout three key periods, spanning his career as a celebrated statesman, heroic soldier, and proponent of the reconciliation.”

William C. Davis, director of programs at the Virginia Center for Civil War Studies and professor at Virginia Tech, is the author or editor of more than fifty books, including the Virginia at War series. He was also the chief consultant for The History Channel’s Civil War Journal. (University of Kentucky Press excerpts)

A memorial to Breckinridge was placed on the Fayette County Courthouse lawn in Lexington in 1887 and the statue was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on July 17, 1997, as part of the Civil War Monuments of Kentucky. But it will soon be gone.

Because the Cheapside area, where the old courthouse and statue are located, was once the site of slave auctions, Lexington’s mayor said: “We have Confederate statues that are standing on really sacred ground. These men fought to preserve slavery and today they’re honored on the very ground where men and women and children were sold into slavery. That just isn’t right.”

Councilwoman Angela Evans, one of three black members of Lexington’s city council, said that the statue’s presence in Cheapside has made the area “a sore spot and a place of pain for the African-American community.”

So despite “dedication to moderate liberalism,” being a “proponent of reconciliation” and the youngest Vice-President, his statue, according to “woke” historians like Amy Murrell Taylor, an associate professor of history at the University of Kentucky, “is not and has never been a neutral representation of the Civil War past” but instead is an embodiment of a “racially charged postwar interpretation.”

So nuance yields to absolutism, oh, excuse me, love trumps hate.

Don't Fiddle With Yiddle or He'll Riddle Your Middle

A lot of Pecos Billing going on here. Remember, in 2017, the total percentage of Jews in the US is a whopping 2%. And that’s about par for the course for them throughout their history. So to suggest there were thousands and thousands of them out in the arid/plains region when they’ve been vastly urban for millennia, begs the question, what exactly are some trying to sell, aside from BS. Making a buck? Sure that’s what they like to do. Going to the source to get it? Nah, let some other sucker go risk the arrows and Jesse James while they stay safe in Hell’s Kitchen.

"In contrast, Benjamin got out while the getting was still good in April 1865." I don't blame him. Especially in light of Lincoln being assassinated, the highest levels of the Confederate government couldn't have known that they were going to be dealt with as leniently as they were.

Regarding no Confederate being tried for treason, I've often wondered to what extent that was done in a spirit of reconciliation versus simply being unable to prove treason in a court of law. The Constitution is silent on the issue of secession therefore the 10th Amendment should've applied. The Attorney General would've known that.

My understanding is that TPTB didn’t want the question of succession answered legally, as it had juat been answered via force majeur.

This purchase was seen by Jackson's friends as an act of pure charity. Said one friend "The cup of cold water you have ministered to this poor disciple may avail more in the Master's eye than all the brilliant deeds with which you may glorify your countries battlefields." He also purchased a four year old, learning disabled child named Emma, again because he was asked to as a matter of charity.

Lee, who played a distinguished role in the post-war rebuilding of the South, Benjamin and Yulee abandoned the South in its hour of need, fled to England, and received cushy sinecures from D'Israeli.

Do you like having Texas, California, Colorado, Utah, Nevada, Arizona and New Mexico? Thank Lee and Jackson.

Well, maybe not California but I get your point.

"Jews were more welcomed in the South than in the North because Southern WASP elites saw themselves as an agrarian aristocracy and thus viewed Jews as valued mercantile complements.

In contrast, post-Puritan Northern elites saw Jews as commercial competitors."

First expounded by Alexander Hamilton as the US's "infant industries" needing protection, and later devised by US Senator Henry Clay as the "American System". Lincoln's hero was Henry Clay and Lincoln himself was pro-tarriff.

"the stated reason for Benjamin’s early dismissal from Yale was “ungentlemanly conduct,” a common euphemism for being gay in the 19th century."

A myth. There weren't a large population of gays back in the day. It sounds like the author is trying to get his compadres to appreciate the first Jewish Congressman, but is trying to get around the fact that he owned slaves. So he has to resort to a politically correct assumption to make in 21st century.

"Comee on, guys, give him a break."
"He owned slaves. Why should we? What'd he ever do for us?"
"But he was gay. He had that going for him."
    "He was?"
    "Cross my heart."
"Oh, well, if he was gay, then that's different!"

There was really no concept of “being gay” in the 19th century. They understood that men might sometimes commit crimes against nature or buggery but this did not make them “gay”, just men who had committed an unnatural act.

I don’t think there is any real basis to assume that “ungentlemanly conduct” meant “being gay” (or being involved in buggery) in Judah’s case. Everyone until very recently assumed that it was something involving card playing or cheating at cards or stealing or something like that. Part of being a gentleman was that you didn’t gossip about other gentlemen, even those expelled – you expelled them and never spoke of them again, so the real reason is lost to history but “being gay” is almost surely retconned history just like “all of Sally Hemings’s children are 100% for sure those of Thomas Jefferson” is modern retconned history.

Benjamin, BTW, was the only Jew in his class at Yale.

Of course they understood that they were gay or whatever term they used. One is not exactly moved to even one such act without a least few problems other issues/baggage. Most men appeared to be disgusted by whole thought of it.

The easiest way to understand history is to look in the mirror and assume a)slightly different culture, b)slightly different technology level, and/or c)same to occasional different environment.

What stays the same is the human involved. If you notice gay men act a certain way, it's much easier to just assume a 19th century human, with more time to study the issue and less distractions, would notice too.

BS. Once again anti semites can’t be trusted with basic historical facts. Benjamin stayed with the remnant Confederate government of Davis AFTER Lee’s surrender

Then why did Benjamin desert his "beloved south" after the war and stay in England with all that conveniently stolen booty? Because he was a "good jew"? Really?

As far as your contention that semites are more trustworthy with historical facts goes I would assert that this comment is absurd based on the bible alone.

Your link says nothing about him stealing anything. Do you not understand what blockade running was? This was the official CSA policy.

If he were disloyal to the South, he could have sold all his slaves once the war turned badly.

Instead, he stayed in the Southern government, lost nearly all of his property, EVEN AFTER RICHMOND FELL AND LEE’S SURRENDER!!!!

He got off because he received gigantic amounts of money and pressure in his favour from other Jews, like Alfred Ochs the publisher of the NYT. The governor had met with Louis Marshall, representing American Jewry and huge amounts of money, before commuting his sentence. What he believed about his innocence had nothing to do with it.

It means "properly account" - in the way that police often ask suspects to do. And only an idiot or a dissembler would think that one would need to consult a diary to account for ones whereabouts of no more than a day or two before. Do you not know where you were pretty much minute to minute 24 hours ago?

After having read the "100 reasons Leo Frank was guilty" article (with very little previous knowledge of the case), I was more or less convinced that he must indeed have been the culprit. But I'm not sure an equally persuasive "100 reasons Leo Frank was innocent" article couldn't be written. Since the crime happened 100 years ago, and Leo Frank reached iconic status in the anti-anti-Semitic imagination, a lot of distortions and obfuscation could have happened, but would be difficult to tell from genuine proof of Frank's innocence (were he really innocent).

I think we just have to accept that it's not quite possible to know what happened.

Patriots, such as Robert E. Lee, stay in their homeland after a national catastrophe and help rebuild.

Judah P. Benjamin, on the other hand, fled the scene of the mess which he created.

It takes a certain kind of incandescent self-unawareness to brag about skipping out on a burned and broken Nation strewn with hundreds of thousands of corpses you had a hand in bringing about to make a buck. Lee and the rest were just too “low IQ” to know when to pack up shop and hawk their wares in London.

Of course, it may be useful to differentiate late 18th century abolitionism from its more familiar mid. 19th century counterpart (e.g. Uncle Tom's Cabin, Underground RR, etc). Neither Franklin nor Hamilton (nor much of anyone else) resisted the Connecticut Compromise where slaves where to be counted as 3/5's a person in order to placate the southern states desires for representation in the House of Representatives.

Supposedly Robert E. Lee didn't own slaves. His wife did, and he freed them sometime before the War started or ended.

If we account for all other factors, it ends up there is no statistically significant difference between Jews and the overall population in terms of slave ownership, especially since levels of slave ownership varied in the southern states and in southern cities.

That's because the three-fifths compromise was anti-slavery. Slave-owners in the South wanted their slaves counted as full persons for apportionment purposes.

(Thanks by the way, for pointing out the highly disproportionate number of Jews on the first stock market.) Yes, really some slave markets did close on Jewish holidays, just like you can’t buy diamonds from some places on Jewish holidays.

In other words, accepting this and moving on is helpful, rather than “Islam did it!” That’s the sort of stuff Muslims do, except they’re claiming that the “Jews did it!” You’ve used the exact same arguments that turn up with them when they make brain dead comments like “The Quran encourages peace”

Anyway, it turns out the greatest crimes of humanity were not a)owning slaves and b)being racist. If the Holocaust weren’t already being force fed onto Western Society like so many geese destined for pate, I’d even give you that one as far more important issue than slavery or racism. Although this particular goose is ready to ease up on her liver at least for a while.

Benjamin, BTW, was the only Jew in his class at Yale.

There was really no concept of “being gay” in the 19th century. They understood that men might sometimes commit crimes against nature or buggery but this did not make them “gay”, just men who had committed an unnatural act.

If you notice gay men act a certain way, it’s much easier to just assume a 19th century human, with more time to study the issue and less distractions, would notice too.

Asian-American doctor says white nationalists refuse her care

It’s completely rational to refuse care from black or Hispanic physicians, given that they enter and graduate from medical school with worse credentials than white and Asian physicians as well as having higher rates of professional censure. From a purely treatment point of view, it makes no sense to do so with Asian-American doctors (foreign medical doctors are another story).

But I know firsthand an odd old white or black person or two from the rural South do so occasionally (my wife and I consult for hospitals sometimes). It’s usually not outright refusal, but more crankiness and complaint.

It means “properly account” – in the way that police often ask suspects to do. And only an idiot or a dissembler would think that one would need to consult a diary to account for ones whereabouts of no more than a day or two before. Do you not know where you were pretty much minute to minute 24 hours ago?

It is not surprising that the Jews would be kvetching about Benjamin not being sufficiently recognized for being a giant among southern slave owners and traders. He came from a long line of Jewish slavers running sugar plantations in the Carribean.

I think it is important to note that most Southern officers stayed on until the end, and many served time in prison. These were very honorable men. Benjamin on the other hand, head of the Confederate secret services, high tailed it to London where he had the last shipment of Confederate cotton waiting for him, conveniently having lost its owner.

    Wiki claims:

"He had money in the United Kingdom as he had, during the war, purchased cotton for transport to Liverpool by blockade runner."

I have read in other places that the cotton as collateral was desperately needed for use as collateral in the final days of the war, and that in effect that by asconding with the cotton Benjamin stabbed the Confederacy in the back in a foreshadowing of what has to happen in Germany 50 years later.

So it is no surprise that jews in general are upset that Benjamin is not honored like southern gentlemen who went down with the ship while he, in that age old money lender fashion, was able to use his connections to continue his life of wealth and luxury.

“He had money in the United Kingdom as he had, during the war, purchased cotton for transport to Liverpool by blockade runner.”

After having read the “100 reasons Leo Frank was guilty” article (with very little previous knowledge of the case), I was more or less convinced that he must indeed have been the culprit. But I’m not sure an equally persuasive “100 reasons Leo Frank was innocent” article couldn’t be written. Since the crime happened 100 years ago, and Leo Frank reached iconic status in the anti-anti-Semitic imagination, a lot of distortions and obfuscation could have happened, but would be difficult to tell from genuine proof of Frank’s innocence (were he really innocent).

I think we just have to accept that it’s not quite possible to know what happened.

Whether Frank was guilty or innocent (I happen to think innocent) should have been decided by the justice system and not a mob. Mobs are not noted for getting it right and there is no appeal from a lynching.

You must read mainsteam Steve Oney's serious yet popularly addressed history book And The Dead Shall Rise. It is the best single book on the topic, it is profusely illustrated, it is so mainstream it doesn't know how to meme. And it absolutely destroys any possibility of Frank's less than enthusiastic and malicious guilt.
What is important to us here of course is not the completely unforeseeable revelation that Frank would turn out to be both a pedophile and a murderer (and a slanderer of the nearest convenient Negro) but that the ADL in organization and strategy was developed here. The B'nai Brith sent activists who immediately determined that Frank was guilty, and indefensibly so, so they set out nudge aside the facts of the case, in favor of a mythology that remains with us: the sensitive, intelligent, well-meaning Jew, praised in a chorus of mass media organs, and his Caliban, the drooling, imbecile, racist, lynch-happy redneck. In a base-covering Karl Rove would have appreciated, long before Frank was lynched, papers were warning that Southrons could not abide by law.

Actually, Nazis initially tried to use "GWTW" in conquered territories to inspire hatred for the word "Yankee." It backfired, because people identified with the Southerners resisting a hated occupation by someone else's government, so the Nazis banned both book and movie.
Goebbels, however, privately screened it more than once, desperate to create his own technicolored epic with a National Socialist viewpoint to inspire the Volksturm towards the end of the war. He came up with Napoleonic-era "Kolberg," even pulling soldiers away from the front to serve as extras, but by that time most screenings were interrupted by air raids. When the movie was finally released after the war, showings mostly prompted audience snickers.

There is no direct evidence that he was Jewish (that in itself does not prove he wasn't), but he certainly was a Scottish rite freemason and an agent of the British government. He was already producing war propaganda portraying Germans (Huns) as being lower than freed slaves before the US even entered the war. So it would be no surprise that financing and support for the massive effort that Birth of a Nation was would have been coordinated by those who were clearly manipulating the US into entry of WWI. I assume that you know what the Balfour agreement was all about and why the timing of the US entry was so critical.

Whether Frank was guilty or innocent (I happen to think innocent) should have been decided by the justice system and not a mob. Mobs are not noted for getting it right and there is no appeal from a lynching.

The ADL threatened the state of Georgia with dire economic consequences and a campaign of vilification if Leo Frank's sentence wasn't commuted. Under duress, the governor of Georgia commuted Leo Frank's sentence, despite the damning evidence.

The prejudices of the people of Georgia worked to the advantage of Leo Frank during the trial. The White people of Georgia were prejudiced against Blacks, and the only other possible suspect was Black. If prejudice, rather than the facts of the case, had been the primary influence on the case, Leo Frank would have been acquitted.

Side note: I'm sorry, I'm not getting the whole "let's make Lee in particular pay for it" type of thing from the MSM when no one complained for 150yrs. No more Dukes of Hazzard either, judging from the look of things. Maybe a hashtag could be started #its silly so stop it already

If tearing down statues is the main agenda for current Civil Rights mvt then they really don't have much to complain about these days.

Neither Franklin nor Hamilton (nor much of anyone else) resisted the Connecticut Compromise where slaves where to be counted as 3/5′s a person in order to placate the southern states desires for representation in the House of Representatives.

That’s because the three-fifths compromise was anti-slavery. Slave-owners in the South wanted their slaves counted as full persons for apportionment purposes.

This is the thing that leftists get wrong - they say "how awful is it that the Founders considered blacks to be 3/5ths of a human being." If the Founders had counted all of the slaves as "fully human" for purposes of Congressional apportionment, then the South would have had more seats in Congress than they really deserved. After Reconstruction, the Southern Democrats had the best of both worlds - the entire black population was counted toward their Congressional representation but on the other hand blacks didn't actually get to vote, so in effect each white Southern voter had the voting power of (wait for it) 5/3rds of a Northern voter.

I dunno either but Cohen is one of the most common Jewish surnames so the odds are not especially good. OTOH, the Southern Jewish upper class was very small and they were mostly all related to each other.

Cohen means of the priestly class - this status is passed down from father to son and every Jew who has not lost touch with his religious roots knows whether or not he is a Cohen, even though the Temple was destroyed almost 2,000 years ago and the priests have very little religious function in post-Temple Judaism. Levi/Levy (another common Jewish surname) were the Temple assistants. When the time came to adopt surnames, many (but not all) Kohanim and Levites adopted their status as a surname. There are many people who are Kohanim whose last name is not Cohen but almost everyone with the last name of Cohen is one and same for Levy.

Gone with the wind (1939), like Birth of a Nation (1915) were Jewish produced films out of Hollywood designed to condition Southerners to be willing to die for their erstwhile enemy, the Union, for both of the planned coming world wars. One might conclude that Walking Dead has Southern heroes in a sop to southern military spirit and prowess too, but in this case to get them to support the never ending Zoinist wars in the Middle East.

In any case I would not be surprised if Rhett's funds in Liverpool and the Wiki entry are an attempt to white wash Benjamin's betrayal of the South.

Actually, Nazis initially tried to use “GWTW” in conquered territories to inspire hatred for the word “Yankee.” It backfired, because people identified with the Southerners resisting a hated occupation by someone else’s government, so the Nazis banned both book and movie.
Goebbels, however, privately screened it more than once, desperate to create his own technicolored epic with a National Socialist viewpoint to inspire the Volksturm towards the end of the war. He came up with Napoleonic-era “Kolberg,” even pulling soldiers away from the front to serve as extras, but by that time most screenings were interrupted by air raids. When the movie was finally released after the war, showings mostly prompted audience snickers.

You must read mainsteam Steve Oney’s serious yet popularly addressed history book And The Dead Shall Rise. It is the best single book on the topic, it is profusely illustrated, it is so mainstream it doesn’t know how to meme. And it absolutely destroys any possibility of Frank’s less than enthusiastic and malicious guilt.
What is important to us here of course is not the completely unforeseeable revelation that Frank would turn out to be both a pedophile and a murderer (and a slanderer of the nearest convenient Negro) but that the ADL in organization and strategy was developed here. The B’nai Brith sent activists who immediately determined that Frank was guilty, and indefensibly so, so they set out nudge aside the facts of the case, in favor of a mythology that remains with us: the sensitive, intelligent, well-meaning Jew, praised in a chorus of mass media organs, and his Caliban, the drooling, imbecile, racist, lynch-happy redneck. In a base-covering Karl Rove would have appreciated, long before Frank was lynched, papers were warning that Southrons could not abide by law.

The book makes clear that Frank's extra-judicial killing was not spontaneous mob violence but orchestrated by prominent Georgians who didn't like the outcomes in the courts. I don't know about you, but to me the idea that in the US, a contest between different elite groups (Frank had his own Northern elites on his side), one side can take a shortcut and bypass the courts and the political system in a matter of life and death is chilling. Once you establish that principle it can be used by both sides. Imagine that the Duke lacrosse players had been lynched at the order of the SPLC before they could be tried.

Less, given that slaves were 39% of the population in 1860. These days, illegals are performing a similar function for the blue states, except they are counted as whole persons. They aren't allowed to vote, but rest assured - the Democrats are working on adding them to the voter rolls, officially, whether they get amnestied or not. In the longer term, maybe Democrats will ensure that foreigners outside of the US are allowed to vote in US elections.

    D. W. Griffith would be really surprised to find out that he was Jewish. By 1939, Jews really did pretty much run Hollywood but in the early days not so much.

As for the idea that these films (both of which portray the Confederacy as a glorious Lost Cause and the Union quite negatively) were somehow part of a Jewspiracy to cause Southerners to die for the Union, you are delusional.

Maybe instead they can tear down the Touro Synagogue in Newport Rhode Island that was built by Jewish slave traders.

Aaron Lopez (slave trader with something like 27 voyages/many hundreds of slaves) is buried there, ditto members of the Seixas and Levy slave trading families.

Emma Lazarus–whose sugar-plantation family built its wealth with the lives of human chattel (though admittedly many of those were white slaves, so don’t count)–wrote poems commemorating the adjoining cemetery:

    http://www.tourosynagogue.org/history-learning/cemetery-literature

So I consider her poem slapped on the Statue of Liberty to be just another monument to slaveholders, slave traders, and excusers of slavery. Rip it off!

No one remotely familiar with the case ever suggested that Leo Frank merely “made a pass” at Mary Phagan, and then murdered her.

Leo Frank was accused of violently raping Mary Phagan because he was enraged that she would dare rebuff his advances, then murdering her to cover up the rape, then attempting to frame a Black man for the murder, and then using the ADL to coerce the system in an attempt to avoid justice.

You think it is ipso facto absurd to suggest that a high status, white collar Jew would ever conceivably rape or murder a low status child? The Roman Polanski case, and the Leopold and Loeb case, prove otherwise.

Jews back then probably saw Frank as another Dreyfus. That case would have been a fresh memory at the time. However the innocence of Dreyfus had been easy to establish. Dreyfus was also of impeccable personal character. Frank by contrast was a man of low character and morals, and there was no clear evidence of his innocence.

Perhaps the French can be prevailed upon to remove his tombstone?

Another interesting fact about Judah Benjamin …

Having found refuge as a lawyer in England, Benjamin went on to write a famous treatise about the law of sales transactions, “Benjamin on Sales.” Many editions later, this work is still in use.
