The MIT Technology Review runs a long story about the Swedish heroes waging war against outmoded concepts such as privacy and freedom of speech.

It reads like one of those prolefeed stories that the Ministry of Truth generates in 1984 in which the moral polarities are reversed 180 degrees, but who notices little details like that anymore?

The Troll Hunters

A group of journalists and researchers wade into ugly corners of the Internet to expose racists, creeps, and hypocrites. Have they gone too far?

By Adrian Chen on December 18, 2014

We’ve come up with the menacing term “troll” for someone who spreads hate and does other horrible things anonymously on the Internet. Internet trolls are unsettling not just because of the things they say but for the mystery they represent: what kind of person could be so vile? One afternoon this fall, the Swedish journalist Robert Aschberg sat on a patio outside a drab apartment building in a suburb of Stockholm, face to face with an Internet troll, trying to answer this question. The troll turned out to be a quiet, skinny man in his 30s, wearing a hoodie and a dirty baseball cap—a sorry foil to Aschberg’s smart suit jacket, gleaming bald head, and TV-trained baritone. …

The goal of Troll Hunter is not to rid the Internet of every troll. “The agenda is to raise hell about all the hate on the Net,” he says. “To start a discussion.”

Back at the Troll Hunter office, a whiteboard organized Aschberg’s agenda. Dossiers on other trolls were tacked up in two rows: a pair of teens who anonymously slander their high school classmates on Instagram, a politician who runs a racist website, a male law student who stole the identity of a young woman to entice another man into an online relationship. In a sign of the issue’s resonance in Sweden, a pithy neologism has been coined to encompass all these forms of online nastiness: näthat (“Net hate”). Troll Hunter, which has become a minor hit for its brash tackling of näthat, is currently filming its second season.

From Wikipedia:

Robert Aschberg (born 19 March 1952 on Kungsholmen, Stockholm) is a Swedish journalist, media executive, and one of Sweden’s most popular TV personalities.[1] He works for the TV3. Robert is the grandson of Olof Aschberg, a Swedish-Jewish bank entrepreneur.

From Wikipedia:

Olof Aschberg (22 July 1877 – 21 April 1960) was a Swedish banker and businessman. Aschberg was a leftist sympathizer and helped finance the Bolsheviks in Russia. In gratitude, the Bolshevik government allowed Aschberg to do business with Soviet Union during the 1920s. Aschberg became head of Ruskombank, the first Soviet international bank.[1]

After 1917, the civilized world tried to choke off the Bolshevik regime with sanctions, but Olof Aschberg organized a way for Lenin to fence stolen gold, jewels, and other loot across the Baltic, which saved Communism (and made the Aschberg family a bundle). See historian Sean McMeekin’s History’s Greatest Heist: The Looting of Russia by the Bolsheviks for the full story.

Hate is having a sort of renaissance online, even in the countries thought to be beyond it.

It is generally no longer acceptable in public life to hurl slurs at women or minorities, to rally around the idea that some humans are inherently worth less than others, or to terrorize vulnerable people. But old-school hate is having a sort of renaissance online, and in the countries thought to be furthest beyond it. The anonymity provided by the Internet fosters communities where people can feed on each other’s hate without consequence. They can easily form into mobs and terrify victims. Individual trolls can hide behind dozens of screen names to multiply their effect. And attempts to curb online hate must always contend with the long-standing ideals that imagine the Internet’s main purpose as offering unfettered space for free speech and marginalized ideas. The struggle against hate online is so urgent and difficult that the law professor Danielle Citron, in her new book Hate Crimes in Cyberspace, calls the Internet “the next battleground for civil rights.”

That Sweden has so much hate to combat is surprising. It’s developed a reputation not only as a bastion of liberalism and feminism but as a sort of digital utopia, where Nordic geeks while away long winter nights sharing movies and music over impossibly fast broadband connections. Sweden boasts a 95 percent Internet penetration rate, the fourth-highest in the world, according to the International Telecommunication Union. Its thriving tech industry has produced iconic brands like Spotify and Minecraft. A political movement born in Sweden, the Pirate Party, is based on the idea that the Internet is a force for peace and prosperity. But Sweden’s Internet also has a disturbing underbelly. It burst into view with the so-called “Instagram riot” of 2012, when hundreds of angry teenagers descended on a Gothenburg high school, calling for the head of a girl who spread sexual slander about fellow students on Instagram.

You know, that was actually a mob of Muslim students worked up into an Old Testament-style frenzy over imputations of sexual dishonor.

The more banal everyday harassment faced by women on the Internet was documented in a much-discussed 2013 TV special called Men Who Net Hate Women, a play on the Swedish title of the first book of Stieg Larsson’s blockbuster Millennium trilogy.

You know, Stieg Larrson’s blockbuster Girl with the Dragon Tattoo trilogy is actually lunatic hate porn that Sabrina Rubin Erdely couldn’t top.

… In addition to Aschberg, a group of volunteer researchers called Researchgruppen, or Research Group, has pioneered a form of activist journalism based on following the crumbs of data anonymous Internet trolls leave behind and unmasking them. In its largest troll hunt, Research Group scraped the comments section of the right-wing online publication Avpixlat and obtained a huge database of its comments and user information. Starting with this data, members meticulously identified many of Avpixlat’s most prolific commenters and then turned the names over to Expressen, one of Sweden’s two major tabloids. In December 2013, Expressen revealed in a series of front-page stories that dozens of prominent Swedes had posted racist, sexist, and otherwise hateful comments under pseudonyms on Avpixlat, including a number of politicians and officials from the ascendant far-right Sweden Democrats. It was one of the biggest scoops of the year. …

Martin Fredriksson is a cofounder of Research Group and its de facto leader. He is a lanky 34-year-old with close-cropped hair and a quietly intense demeanor, though he is prone to outbursts on Twitter that hint at his past as a militant anti-racism activist. … The group currently has 10 members, all volunteers, including a psychology graduate student, a couple of journalism students, a grade school librarian, a writer for an online IT trade publication, and a porter in a hospital. The little organizing that occurs typically happens in Internet relay chat rooms and on a wiki. But analyzing the Avpixlat database, which contained three million comments and over 55,000 accounts, required a centralized, systematized process. An image on the main page of the intranet pokes fun at the immensity of the task. Two horses have their heads stuck in a haystack. “Find anything?” asks one. “Nope,” says the other. …

Since then, its members have investigated the men’s rights movement, Swedish police tactics, and various right-wing groups. Until the Avpixlat story they had mostly published their findings quietly on their website or partnered with small left-wing news organizations. “The official story is that we pick subjects about democracy and equality,” says Fredriksson. “But the real reason is that we just have special interests—we just try to focus on stuff that interests us as people.” …

Fredriksson is a member of a generation of Swedes known as “Generation 64,” who grew up tinkering with Commodore 64s in the 1980s and went on to revolutionize Sweden’s IT industry. His upbringing also coincided with the rise of a neo-Nazi movement in the 1990s, when he was a teenage punk rocker. He and his friends constantly clashed with a gang of skinheads in his small hometown in southern Sweden. “I was very interested in politics. I came to the conclusion that if I wanted to do politics I’d have to deal with the Nazi threat in some way,” he says. He joined the controversial leftist group Antifascistisk Aktion (AFA), which openly endorses the use of violence against neo-Nazis. In 2006 he was sentenced to community service for beating a man during a fight between a group of neo-Nazis and antiracists.

So, basically, the hero of the article is a violent criminal who has aged out of street fighting. But he’s a violent extremist leftist criminal, so he’s a good guy.

… The mass unmasking of Avpixlat commenters in 2013 was an accidental consequence of this curiosity. Avpixlat is an influential voice in Sweden’s growing right-wing populist movement, which is driven by a xenophobic panic that Muslim immigrants and Roma are destroying the country. The site fixates on spreading stories of rapes and murders committed by immigrants, which it contends are being covered up by the liberal establishment.

So the good guys are the ones trying to keep rapes covered up. The Left’s volunteer auxiliary thought police are targeting anyone trying to expose Sweden’s problem with Rape Culture.

Freud’s concept of “Projection” keeps looking better and better.

No, that’s not what a troll is. Trolls do things like pretend to be something they’re not, disrupt discussions, stir the pot. And the term isn’t “menacing” at all.

When the first sentence is that absurdly wrong when discussing a non-controversial topic, you can expect some real over-the-top political craziness later.

That was my first reaction too. That isn't what 'troll' generally means in internet parlance.

+1. Exactly. The term troll refers to specific behaviour. Originally trolling referred to attempts to create dissent by posting outrageous material on topics that the troll was not personally invested in. The right wing people who post at Salon or left wing people who post at Unz are not really trolls unless they just enjoy causing trouble.
    , @dearieme
"And the term isn’t “menacing” at all." I suspect that in Scandinavia "troll" is menacing.

It's like the evolution of "bigot". Its original meaning (and only real meaning, according to me) is someone who holds an opinion in an obstinate, vehement, unreasoning fashion - regardless of what the opinion is, whether it's right or wrong, good or bad. Nowadays it usually refers to someone holding an opinion stigmatized by progressives - no matter how politely or reasonably it's defended.

This shows how we've crossed the watershed from liberalism to post-liberalism. The implications are grim.

    , @NOTA
Yeah, in online discussions trolls are the folks who try to keep the discussion from happening, try to stir up flamewars, post offensive comments in an attempt to derail the discussion, etc.

There are also very nasty people who make credible-sounding death threats, spread lies about people, etc. That's a different phenomenon, and one that probably needs to have the law involved. Sometimes people use the term "troll" for them, too.

There are also people who discuss things you would rather not have discussed, or who make arguments that are socially unacceptable or hold beliefs that are socially unacceptable. That doesn't fit the term "troll" as I've ever heard it used, but it is something lots of people would like to suppress. (And which kinds of socially unacceptable beliefs need to be suppressed, and which protected, depends on the activists you ask. About 90% of the people who expressed strong opinions about "outing" the CEO of Mozilla for donating money to fight gay marriage would have been on the other side, if he'd been forced out of the CEO spot of a conservative organization after someone had outed him for supporting gay marriage.

The new US backed government in Ukraine just established a ministry of truth:

“Ukraine just created its own version of Orwell’s ‘Ministry of Truth’”

    http://mashable.com/2014/12/02/ukraine-ministry-of-truth/

The Ukraine government has established a department that critics are calling the “Ministry of Truth” — borrowing a term from George Orwell’s classic dystopian novel 1984.

Officially called the Ministry of Information Policy, the new office will be headed by Yuriy Stets, head of the Information Security Department of the National Guard of Ukraine. A close ally to President Petro Poroshenko, Stets was formerly chief producer of the TV channel that Poroshenko sill owns.

While its main objective appears to be confronting Russia’s formidable propaganda machine, the Ministry is likely to also restrict free speech and inhibit journalists’ work — particularly in war-torn eastern Ukraine, according to observers.

“Ukraine just created its own version of Orwell’s ‘Ministry of Truth'"

That is indeed a terrible development.

How terrible? Let me put it this way. It is so terrible , that if Ukraine's freedom-of-press ranking were to drop another 40 countries, it would be tied with Russia. That's how terrible.

I presume that here, “the civilized world” refers to the governments that had just got done nearly destroying civilization by murdering 15 million of their own people in an utterly pointless war. The Bolsheviks, whatever else can be said about them, opposed that war from the beginning, and when they took power, they extracted their country from it. That makes them “uncivilized.”

Sadly, just as surely as The Daily Bikini turned into serious porn and Jennacam became online peep shows, trolling degenerated into anonymous hate posts.

Religious Affiliation and Hiring Discrimination in the American South: A Field Experiment
Michael Wallace, Bradley R. E. Wright, and Allen Hyde

    Abstract
This article describes a field experiment in which we sent fictitious résumés to advertised job openings throughout the American South. We randomly altered the résumés to indicate affiliation in one of seven religious groups or a control group. We found that applicants who expressed a religious identity were 26 percent less likely to receive a response from employers. In general, Muslims, pagans, and atheists suffered the highest levels of discriminatory treatment from employers, a fictitious religious group and Catholics experienced moderate levels, evangelical Christians encountered little, and Jews received no discernible discrimination. We also found evidence suggesting the possibility that Jews received preferential treatment over other religious groups in employer responses. The results fit best with models of religious discrimination rooted in secularization theory and cultural distaste theory. We briefly discuss what our findings suggest for a more robust theory of prejudice and discrimination in society.

If somebody were going about their own life, and I chose to harass them for no other reason than my own self-importance, then I would expect nothing less than the possibility that they might someday harass me back.

Free speech does not guarantee anonymity. If elected officials are spreading racist or xenophobic material online, the voting public has a right to know in order to make an informed decision at the polls.

As with the NYT' non-coverage of Rolling Stone 's recent rape fable, this seems to be another case of "who versus whom." It doesn't really matter to Aschberg and Fredriksson that internet trolls are harassing people, it's that they're harassing the wrong type of people.

And who gets to decide what's racist or xenophobic? I'm not defending internet trolls and politicians should be held accountable at the polls, but sometimes I think these types of free speech restrictions are less about stopping someone from yelling "Fire!" in a crowded theater, and more about preempting certain discussions, regardless of the specific facts, simply because they get in the way of whatever agenda is being promoted at the time. It's about stopping (and sometimes even crushing) political disagreement.

Sometimes you have to sacrifice for the greater good.

And whose greater good? A lot of the most controversial issues, such as immigration, are rarely put to a public vote. When talking about an issue is forbidden and voting on it is off the table, whom does that benefit? Is that really for the greater good?
  14. It’s instructive that Jewish leftist figures in Europe like Aschberg align themselves with groups which combat the ‘right’, which may have historically been anti-semitic but whose main cause now is to restrict the burgeoning Islamicization of many major cities, and nations. Curious that, in choosing between those sides, they would throw in their lot with the Islamists.
Do they have more enmity towards native Europeans than they do toward Muslims? Do they just consider them more of an immediate threat? Or can they not perceive that the retention of nominally Christian European states, both in Europe and North America, is the sine qua non of Jewish survival?

"Do they have more enmity towards native Europeans than they do toward Muslims?"

Think of all the minorities in history who got assimilated out of existence. Varangians in Russia, Romans in Britain, Greeks in southern Italy, Manchurians in China, etc., etc. If a large number of ethnic groups become, at one point or another, minorities somewhere, some will turn out to be less assimilable than others. One way of being unassimilable is to possess an instinctive hostility towards the host population.

French Jews grew up with the French as the host, Russian Jews grew up with Russians as the host, Israeli Jews grew up with Arabs as the host.

You're assuming that European Jews' anti-European attitude is a part of some conscious plan of action and you're confused by the fact that the plan doesn't appear to make sense.

I think that these attitudes arise out of an subconscious anti-host instinct instead. There is no conscious plan.

You've convinced me, but I'm in the extreme minority, and contemplating conversion to Christianity just to formally break with the tribe.

They perceive it. Don't worry, the leftism is just an atavistic reflex that will go away in time. And I'm sure that the half-million Jews of France -- most of whom are the children and grandchildren of refugees from France's North African colonies--understand full well what they can expect in an Islamicized Europe.

What we see in Sweden and all over the rest of the West is a leftist elite forcing a radical agenda on their societies, then, when some recognize what is going on and react against it, the Left denounces them as extremists and does everything it can to silence and marginalize them. In other words, the people who are turning their societies upside-down call the people who object to that “extremists.” If you just want to be left alone to live in the kind of nation in which you grew up, defined by shared values and culture, you are an extremist.

If a violent right-wing reaction arises in Europe, who will be responsible? The Left. Yet to the very end, the Left will be crying out, “Why can’t you extremists stop hating?”

Eric Roberts is more worried about protecting racial sensitivity than he is about protecting the 1st amendment. This retard does not know that artistic freedom and the 1st amendment go hand and hand and that banning “The Interview” from being played in theaters is a slippery slope in taking away more freedom of speech rights.

I wish these spineless left wing progressives were more like the old school liberals a.k.a Libertarians when it came to protecting freedom of speech that they don’t like.

Progressives have hijacked the term liberalism and turned it into a more dictatorship like ideology. The term liberal in 2014 does not mean the same thing as it did in 1954 for example.

“The new US backed government in Ukraine just established a ministry of truth:”

I prefer the term neocon-backed. It’s factual because Vicky Nuland is a proud neocon and it reduces the potential for defensive reactions among Americans when they find out about the Kiev junta’s crimes. And why should Americans feel responsible for them? It’s not like anyone in Minnessota is benefiting from the carnage in the Ukraine.

So I call the junta neocon-backed. Same for the regimes that appeared in the Middle East during “Arab Spring”.

  27. It is generally no longer acceptable in public life to hurl slurs at women or minorities, to rally around the idea that some humans are inherently worth less than others, or to terrorize vulnerable people.

I don’t think so. As far as I can tell, every Western government considers Whites be “inherently worth less than others”, and government policy is as “public” as it gets.

But old-school hate is having a sort of renaissance online, and in the countries thought to be furthest beyond it. The anonymity provided by the Internet fosters communities where people can feed on each other’s hate without consequence. They can easily form into mobs and terrify victims.

Yet they never do so. Probably because the Left has something better than mobs: elaborately organized criminal syndicates called “governments” with trillions of dollars of resources at their disposal.

  30. I think a lot of us in the US suffer from another form of porn–Euro-bashing, or to paraphrase the famous Jonah Goldberg, “I’d take our immigration problem over Europe’s any day of the week.” Mark Steyn is the grand-puba of this sort of porn.

    And yet–

    1) nearly every European country is at least 90% White (most more than 95% White). Taking the US’s definition of White (which includes Caucasoids, Arabs and North Africans), every European country is well above 90% White. The US’s “White” population is in the low 60s percent.

    2) there are far-right parties in several European countries (East and West) who actually have representatives either in the EU, national parliaments, etc. These parties are explicitly pro-White and anti-immigration. Not a one of them would even be elected to a local school board in the US.

    3) nearly 20,000 Germans (Germans!) marched in Dresden (sure there was official denouncement, but the number speaks for itself) demanding an end to non-White immigration with the clear implication of expulsion of non-Whites as the ultimate goal. A gathering of even 100 (even ten) Whites marching for an end of non-White immigration and the expulsion of non-Whites would be universally condemned and be met by hundreds if not thousands of counter-marchers.

    4) There are a handful of cities in Europe, sections of which a White would not be greeted kindly, as compared to just about every US city (hundreds) where for miles at a stretch a White would be assaulted or worse.

The point is that Europeans are much more racially conscious and racially active than Whites in the US. We are an absolutely docile demographic. What awaits non-Whites in Europe in the coming decades will not be pretty. What awaits us Whites here will be much worse.

    Hear! Hear!

I've been saying this for some time -- that not only is "Europe" (because it's nothing more than a geographic expression) far more white than the US, virtually every nation there has an explicitly anti-immigration party that is either in a coalition government or, if on the outside, forcing the mainstream parties to restrict immigration. Even supposedly politically correct paragons, such as Denmark, have such parties.

There is no anti-immigrant party in the US nor is there any likelihood of immigration being restricted any time soon.

Whatever sh*t the European nations are in, the US is actually in a lot more trouble.

  33. In addition to Aschberg, a group of volunteer researchers called Researchgruppen, or Research Group, has pioneered a form of activist journalism based on following the crumbs of data anonymous Internet trolls leave behind and unmasking them. …

I don’t think they know what a troll is. I always thought a troll was someone who wanders onto a site, usually on the opposite end of that person’s political perspective, and then proceeds to either take over the comment thread by attacking the subject matter, other users, or acts like an agent provocateur to make caricature-type comments to make that site look extreme or foolish. In general a troll goes to a site he despises and tries to create havoc to prevent that site from from effectively functioning to promote their point of view.

If those Swedish SJWs went to a right-wing website to hound their users and try to gather information to publicly out them, THEN THEY ARE THE TROLLS. The Avpixlat users are not the trolls since they are posting on their site which shares their ideology. That’s called freedom of association.

Had Avpixlat’s users gone to the Huffpo or DailyKos and tried to write the same comments, then they would have been trolls. But how can you be a troll if you are in your own neck of the woods? For example, no one would consider iSteve commenters that agree with Sailer to be trolls, provided that we post here. However, when we follow Steve’s links and go off to the NYT or WaPo to spread our message, then those folks could make the claim that we are trolls since we are now in enemy territory, and are deliberately attempting to attack the Narrative.

Someone ought to tell those SJWs that they should be the subject of their next expose.

Which means they are not after trolls, they are after members of the right who seem to be finding more receptive people to their views on the internet. The new US backed government in Ukraine just established a ministry of truth:

"Ukraine just created its own version of Orwell's 'Ministry of Truth'"

    http://mashable.com/2014/12/02/ukraine-ministry-of-truth/

The Ukraine government has established a department that critics are calling the “Ministry of Truth” — borrowing a term from George Orwell's classic dystopian novel 1984.

While its main objective appears to be confronting Russia’s formidable propaganda machine, the Ministry is likely to also restrict free speech and inhibit journalists' work — particularly in war-torn eastern Ukraine, according to observers.

“Ukraine just created its own version of Orwell’s ‘Ministry of Truth’”

That is indeed a terrible development.

How terrible? Let me put it this way. It is so terrible , that if Ukraine’s freedom-of-press ranking were to drop another 40 countries, it would be tied with Russia. That’s how terrible.

"Einsatzgruppe" is often translated as simply "task force". William Grigg, who runs the Pro Libertate website, loves to point this out when the cops create a task force in this country.

One reason "Researchgruppen" looks like a German word is that it's mistranslated in the article. It doesn't mean "research group"; it means "the research group". The "en" at the end is the definite article.

Another commenter recently pointed out that the United States would now have lots of PC anti-speech laws if not for the Constitution and The Bill of Rights (essentially in this case The First Amendment.) I believe this, and I think this is the reason the US is one of the few sanctuaries for free speech in the era of thoughtcrime.

Now there is this attack on private free speech being led in Sweden by the trust fund grandson of Stalin’s money changer.

This kind of attack can happen anywhere, and I believe will eventually happen in America, regardless of our rights to free speech and privacy. The Bill of Rights protects us from our government, but not from self-appointed, chosen individuals who will gladly persecute us.

This is another one of those reasons why I’m glad not to be very young, because these attacks will be inevitable in the decades ahead, and nothing good can come from them.

Sony was hacked and blackmailed into shutting up when someone didn’t like what it was about to say. The same thing will start happening to individuals and groups of Americans.

The NSA can hack anything, and we can assume it possesses every single thing every one of us has ever done on the internet, along with our identities. If enough people with the wrong loyalties get their hands on that, they will misuse it.

To make matters worse, the cameras and microphones that are now built into our computers and devices can be turned on remotely by anyone with the knowhow to hack in and do it.

The potential for abuse, mass destruction of lives, and burial of unpopular ideas is real and immense. It could lead to a “final solution” to WASPy American thinking. That would be the end of truly American thought.

An entire country could be paralyzed too. Imagine an enemy releasing the names, thoughtcrime comments, and embarrassing google search histories of everyone in a nation. That would be like setting off a stink bomb in a crowded theater. Everyone would suddenly find out that their school board presidents think blacks have low IQs, their husbands are all surfing porn, and their neighbors either hate them or are sleeping with their wives. The interruption would be a hundred million times bigger than when Bill Clinton virtually got a public blow job in the Oval Office.

The only antidote to this I can see is not to give a damn about one’s own privacy or image. Live in a glass house and do as you please. Create a new culture in which we all admit that everyone has some ugliness. Stop pretending to satisfy someone else’s definition of perfect.

People are trying to return the Western world to a new kind of puritanism. A new, warped collar of rigid, approved, properness is slowly being placed around our necks. In Sweden, a privileged, chosen few people are doing their part to tighten that collar.

It's instructive that Jewish leftist figures in Europe like Aschberg align themselves with groups which combat the 'right', which may have historically been anti-semitic but whose main cause now is to restrict the burgeoning Islamicization of many major cities, and nations.

“Do they have more enmity towards native Europeans than they do toward Muslims?”

You’re assuming that European Jews’ anti-European attitude is a part of some conscious plan of action and you’re confused by the fact that the plan doesn’t appear to make sense.

I think that these attitudes arise out of an subconscious anti-host instinct instead. There is no conscious plan.

Now there is this attack on private free speech being led in Sweden by the trust fund grandson of Stalin's money changer.

This kind of attack can happen anywhere, and I believe will eventually happen in America, regardless of our rights to free speech and privacy. The Bill of Rights protects us from our government, but not from self-appointed, chosen individuals who will gladly persecute us.

This is another one of those reasons why I'm glad not to be very young, because these attacks will be inevitable in the decades ahead, and nothing good can come from them.

Sony was hacked and blackmailed into shutting up when someone didn't like what it was about to say.

It could lead to a "final solution" to WASPy American thinking.

The only antidote to this I can see is not to give a damn about one's own privacy or image. Live in a glass house and do as you please. Create a new culture in which we all admit that everyone has some ugliness. Stop pretending to satisfy someone else's definition of perfect.

People are trying to return the Western world to a new kind of puritanism. A new, warped collar of rigid, approved, properness is slowly being placed around our necks. In Sweden, a privileged, chosen few people are doing their part to tighten that collar.

    BRAVO!

You must go on full steam ahead because, at some point, you will have to select a side. One side will define you anyway.

Why? From a tactical point of view, who knew to start self-censoring in 2001? (assuming that is when serious NSA data gobbling began in earnest) From a historical point of view, associations of like-minded individuals is essential in order for survival and understanding the tactics, breadth, and coordination of the “misguided do-gooders”. We need to know we are all out there, because we are deliberately shut out, currently. The tide can change very quickly, usually when it looks like the opposition almost has it in the bag.

What the lib nannies do for sport now will soon have the full weight of government behind it. But they have to understand there is opposition that will prevail.

The Bolsheviks, whatever else can be said about them, opposed that war from the beginning, and when they took power, they extracted their country from it. That makes them "uncivilized."

We’ve come up with the menacing term “troll” for someone who spreads hate and does other horrible things anonymously on the Internet.

No, that's not what a troll is. Trolls do things like pretend to be something they're not, disrupt discussions, stir the pot. And the term isn't "menacing" at all.

When the first sentence is that absurdly wrong when discussing a non-controversial topic, you can expect some real over-the-top political craziness later.

“And the term isn’t “menacing” at all.” I suspect that in Scandinavia “troll” is menacing.

Steve’s article would count as trolling itself according to certain readers (and moderators) of the Daily Telegraph.

Many of the deleted comments under that article made entirely factual observations about the ethnic/religious affiliations regarding the majority of the Bolshevik leadership. Most of those comments have been deleted, though the comments claiming that posting such information is trolling and/or ‘hate’.

Other comments touching upon the ethnic/religious affiliations of those who dominate the modern media have also been deleted. Presumably because it’s just not true.

We are not a “vulnerable class.” Sweden is still a great place to live though, if you avoid the rough areas. And it’s the perfect place for studying White psychopathology. It is generally no longer acceptable in public life to hurl slurs at women or minorities, to rally around the idea that some humans are inherently worth less than others, or to terrorize vulnerable people.

I don't think so. As far as I can tell, every Western government considers Whites be "inherently worth less than others", and government policy is as "public" as it gets.

But old-school hate is having a sort of renaissance online, and in the countries thought to be furthest beyond it. The anonymity provided by the Internet fosters communities where people can feed on each other’s hate without consequence. They can easily form into mobs and terrify victims.

Yet they never do so. Probably because the Left has something better than mobs: elaborately organized criminal syndicates called "governments" with trillions of dollars of resources at their disposal.

This sums it up. A lavishly funded bully torments a powerless victim. This is misanthropy.

The troll turned out to be a quiet, skinny man in his 30s, wearing a hoodie and a dirty baseball cap—a sorry foil to Aschberg’s smart suit jacket, gleaming bald head, and TV-trained baritone.

    Is that all they’ve got?

    Weak.

Were they to meet online I’m assuming Aschberg would be reduced to nitpicking about grammar since boasting about his bald head wouldn’t really work.

“Einsatzgruppe” is often translated as simply “task force”. William Grigg, who runs the Pro Libertate website, loves to point this out when the cops create a task force in this country.

One reason “Researchgruppen” looks like a German word is that it’s mistranslated in the article. It doesn’t mean “research group”; it means “the research group”. The “en” at the end is the definite article.

Most of those deaths were due to famine. And the famine in turn, though Lenin was far from blameless, was also partly due to the depletion of granaries and requisition of grain during WWI. So the blame for that partly goes to the Civilized World as well.

My point wasn’t to defend the Bolsheviks; Kronstadt alone would be enough to make that task impossible. My point was to challenge the ridiculous notion that the Bolsheviks’ enemies represented “civilization.”

Free speech does not guarantee anonymity. If elected officials are spreading racist or xenophobic material online, the voting public has a right to know in order to make an informed decision at the polls.

As with the NYT’ non-coverage of Rolling Stone ‘s recent rape fable, this seems to be another case of “who versus whom.” It doesn’t really matter to Aschberg and Fredriksson that internet trolls are harassing people, it’s that they’re harassing the wrong type of people.

And who gets to decide what’s racist or xenophobic? I’m not defending internet trolls and politicians should be held accountable at the polls, but sometimes I think these types of free speech restrictions are less about stopping someone from yelling “Fire!” in a crowded theater, and more about preempting certain discussions, regardless of the specific facts, simply because they get in the way of whatever agenda is being promoted at the time. It’s about stopping (and sometimes even crushing) political disagreement.

Sometimes you have to sacrifice for the greater good.

And whose greater good? A lot of the most controversial issues, such as immigration, are rarely put to a public vote. When talking about an issue is forbidden and voting on it is off the table, whom does that benefit? Is that really for the greater good?

It’s like the evolution of “bigot”. Its original meaning (and only real meaning, according to me) is someone who holds an opinion in an obstinate, vehement, unreasoning fashion – regardless of what the opinion is, whether it’s right or wrong, good or bad. Nowadays it usually refers to someone holding an opinion stigmatized by progressives – no matter how politely or reasonably it’s defended.

This shows how we’ve crossed the watershed from liberalism to post-liberalism. The implications are grim.

Conversion didn’t work to distance German Jews and half-Jews from Jewish affiliation during the Nazi era. The German Protestant churches turned them out. The Catholics did not betray their Jewish converts but were largely unable to protect them from persecution on ethnic grounds. You’re already a half-Jew who never sets foot in a synagogue, and you’ve indicated previously that you’re not likely ever to marry? Why trouble yourself with an insincere conversion?

I think a lot of us in the US suffer from another form of porn--Euro-bashing, or to paraphrase the famous Jonah Goldberg, "I'd take our immigration problem over Europe's any day of the week." Mark Steyn is the grand-puba of this sort of porn.

    And yet--

    1) nearly every European country is at least 90% White (most more than 95% White). Taking the US's definition of White (which includes Caucasoids, Arabs and North Africans), every European country is well above 90% White. The US's "White" population is in the low 60s percent.

“I’d take our immigration problem over Europe’s any day of the week.”

Steyn’s right, Mexican and Chinese are much better than African and Arab immigrants. No Islam, cousin-marriage, rape rings, aggressive hate of Western culture and people, etc.

nearly every European country is at least 90% White (most more than 95% White) … taking the US’s definition of White (which includes Caucasoids, Arabs and North Africans).

The problem with Arab immigrants to Europe isn’t their skin tone, but their dysfunctional culture and low IQ, which gets worse each generation with their extreme inbreeding.

The US’s “White” population is in the low 60s percent.

That’s off a base that never exceeded about 87% since we started with Indians, Mestizos in the Southwest and Puerto Rico, Hawaiians in Hawaii, and slaves and their descendants.

Yep. There’s been a push for anti-freedom-of-speech laws here for a long time. It’s just been under the radar (and Jewish) because they’re considered un-American, and because the Constitution prohibits them. They’re the kind of “laws” that leftists dream about getting passed with a voice vote at midnight on Christmas Eve with only a skeleton crew of activist legislators present, using unprecedented legalistic skullduggery.

An entire country could be paralyzed too. Imagine an enemy releasing the names, thoughtcrime comments, and embarrassing google search histories of everyone in a nation. That would be like setting off a stink bomb in a crowded theater.

Think of the nightmare of sorting all that data to get anything useful out of it. It’s like the Augean Stables, or the Gordian Knot.

Things are getting extremely interesting here in Sweden. The trends Steve discussed are only going to get worse. A new law comes into effect January 1st that to all appearances will criminalize all criticism of Swedish immigration policy, the responsible politicians, or immigrants.

You’ve convinced me, but I’m in the extreme minority, and contemplating conversion to Christianity just to formally break with the tribe.

Maybe the best way is to stay in the tribe, and try to change it from within? Just a suggestion, and not motivated by concern with what’s good for your sanity. I make it because Jewry has been losing its less ethnocentric members, who are less willing to put up with the BS, for centuries, if not eons. And all it seems to do is solidify the ethnocentrism of the tribe.

They can easily form into mobs and terrify victims.

So can anyone. So can blacks and Muslims. The difference being, blacks and Muslims actually do form into mobs and terrify people.

dozens of screen names to multiply their effect.

Translation: leftists never believed in freedom of speech. They just used it while they were on the outside. Now that they’re on the inside, they show that they actually hate freedom of speech, and only used it to get on the inside. Now, they can dispose of their old enemy, freedom of speech.

A knife in the back: that’s what any real virtue or principle can expect from the left.

If Jewry were losing large numbers of less ethnocentric/religious members in Europe for centuries or eons, we would expect to see a greater genetic influence on the Northern European host populations of the last half-millennium. Since almost no such Jewish genetic influence is observed, I am skeptical. Rather, I think that the process of losing Jewish affiliation takes multiple generations for each family and has only begun in the last 50-100 years in Europe (except among the Iberian Conversos) and North America. Demographic trends suggest that in another 50-100 years, almost all self-identifying Jews will be Orthodox, there will be few if any secular or Reform Jews, and there will be a subset of the population with partial Jewish ancestry composed of the descendants of the secular and Reform Jews of today.

It's instructive that Jewish leftist figures in Europe like Aschberg align themselves with groups which combat the 'right', which may have historically been anti-semitic but whose main cause now is to restrict the burgeoning Islamicization of many major cities, and nations.

They perceive it. Don’t worry, the leftism is just an atavistic reflex that will go away in time. And I’m sure that the half-million Jews of France — most of whom are the children and grandchildren of refugees from France’s North African colonies–understand full well what they can expect in an Islamicized Europe.

Most of those deaths were due to famine. And the famine in turn, though Lenin was far from blameless, was also partly due to the depletion of granaries and requisition of grain during WWI. So the blame for that partly goes to the Civilized World as well.

My point wasn't to defend the Bolsheviks; Kronstadt alone would be enough to make that task impossible. My point was to challenge the ridiculous notion that the Bolsheviks' enemies represented "civilization."

It might be better to challenge the notion that civilization is a desideratum. Civilization produces centralization. Centralization is a disaster for Whites.

    Swedes. Always hunting witches.

    Jews. Always persecuting the goyim.

Yep. There's been a push for anti-freedom-of-speech laws here for a long time. It's just been under the radar (and Jewish) because they're considered un-American, and because the Constitution prohibits them. They're the kind of "laws" that leftists dream about getting passed with a voice vote at midnight on Christmas Eve with only a skeleton crew of activist legislators present, using unprecedented legalistic skullduggery.

It's like the Augean Stables, or the Gordian Knot.

Things are getting extremely interesting here in Sweden. The trends Steve discussed are only going to get worse. A new law comes into effect January 1st that to all appearances will criminalize all criticism of Swedish immigration policy, the responsible politicians, or immigrants.

    ...

You’ve convinced me, but I’m in the extreme minority, and contemplating conversion to Christianity just to formally break with the tribe.

Maybe the best way is to stay in the tribe, and try to change it from within? Just a suggestion, and not motivated by concern with what's good for your sanity.

Translation: leftists never believed in freedom of speech. They just used it while they were on the outside. Now that they're on the inside, they show that they actually hate freedom of speech, and only used it to get on the inside. Now, they can dispose of their old enemy, freedom of speech.

A knife in the back: that's what any real virtue or principle can expect from the left.

    Hear! Hear!

I’ve been saying this for some time — that not only is “Europe” (because it’s nothing more than a geographic expression) far more white than the US, virtually every nation there has an explicitly anti-immigration party that is either in a coalition government or, if on the outside, forcing the mainstream parties to restrict immigration. Even supposedly politically correct paragons, such as Denmark, have such parties.

There is no anti-immigrant party in the US nor is there any likelihood of immigration being restricted any time soon.

Whatever sh*t the European nations are in, the US is actually in a lot more trouble.

  80. What they are doing is of course disgusting and unforgivable. However the nationalists are not handling this correctly. Most Swedes are skeptical towards immigration, but also deeply PC and brainwashed to fear an imminent Nazi uprising.

The correct strategic response for nationalists who want to prevent this is NOT to write racist, hateful or openly racialists comments. It is not to assassinate immigrants or discuss violence. If the media has unfairly branded you nazis, avoid talking about “jews” to journalists.

Calmly argue against immigration and cite credible problems such as costs, crime, housing shortage. Don’t say anything negative about immigrants, just criticize the policy. Go for 70-80% of the general public who are open to these argument, not radicalizing the 5% nationalist core even more. Aschberg is evil and has a large megaphone, so why are those morons giving him ammunition?

Are you commenting to unload your emotions or to defeat Aschberg? People here who encourage the “hard line, very serious identitarians.” wing of SD are aiding the cultural Marxist to destroy Sweden.

Yeah, in online discussions trolls are the folks who try to keep the discussion from happening, try to stir up flamewars, post offensive comments in an attempt to derail the discussion, etc.

There are also very nasty people who make credible-sounding death threats, spread lies about people, etc. That’s a different phenomenon, and one that probably needs to have the law involved. Sometimes people use the term “troll” for them, too.

There are also people who discuss things you would rather not have discussed, or who make arguments that are socially unacceptable or hold beliefs that are socially unacceptable. That doesn’t fit the term “troll” as I’ve ever heard it used, but it is something lots of people would like to suppress. (And which kinds of socially unacceptable beliefs need to be suppressed, and which protected, depends on the activists you ask. About 90% of the people who expressed strong opinions about “outing” the CEO of Mozilla for donating money to fight gay marriage would have been on the other side, if he’d been forced out of the CEO spot of a conservative organization after someone had outed him for supporting gay marriage.

  83. The majority of people who believe in freedom of speech are rational introverts – people who actually like analysing things and talking about issues that transcend their own personal issues. In political terms the they tend to be right wing intellectuals, populist journalists, centrist scientists or libertarians. They are rarely left-wing activists.

Hence, a key tactic of leftism is pathologising the rational introvert and not allowing him or her to have any freedom of expression.

The biggest enemies of freedom of speech in this country are unfortunately America’s college campuses. You see Left Wing communist progressives at universities protesting that people like Ann Coulter and Bill Maher for example, should not have the right to speak at their schools because they are Islamophobic hate mongers.

The live free or die Libertarian attitude in regards to freedom of speech is definitely NOT alive and well in America’s college campuses.

Hate speech is not free speech is something that you often hear among left wing commie college students.
