From the New York Times:

Producer Cancels ‘Miss Saigon’; 140 Members Challenge Equity

By MERVYN ROTHSTEIN
Published: August 9, 1990

The producer of the hit London musical ”Miss Saigon” announced yesterday that he was canceling the show’s Broadway production, which had already sold a record $25 million in advance tickets, because Actors’ Equity had denied permission for the English actor Jonathan Pryce to repeat his performance in New York. …

In a statement issued earlier by his London office, Mr. [Cameron] Mackintosh [the producer] said: ”In denying approval for Jonathan Pryce, Actors’ Equity has violated its own collective bargaining agreement with the League of American Theaters and Producers as well as its agreement with British Equity. Under these agreements, the only issue which Equity has the right to consider in making its decision is whether or not Jonathan Pryce is a ‘star.’ Equity has previously certified Mr. Pryce as a ‘star,’ when it endorsed his appearance on Broadway in 1984 under an H-1 visa. Therefore, there is no legal basis for their objecting to his admission for ‘Miss Saigon.’ ”

Equity, in its statement Tuesday barring Mr. Pryce, said that it could not ”appear to condone the casting of a Caucasian in the role of a Eurasian.” …

”It’s a legitimate argument they have, trying to insure that any racial minority is given full opportunity to work in the arts,” Mr. Pryce said. ”But I thought logic and reason would prevail.” … If the character is half Asian and half European, you’ve got to drop down on one side of the fence or the other, and I’m choosing to drop down on the European side.” …

A Broadway production of ”Miss Saigon,” a musical about an American G.I. and his Vietnamese girlfriend during the last days of the Vietnam War just before the fall of Saigon, would have provided roles for 50 actors, about 34 of whom would have been members of minority groups. Those jobs, as well as hundreds of others from possible touring companies, are now apparently lost. …

”Indeed, Equity has rejected our application solely on the grounds that Mr. Pryce is Caucasian,” the statement continued. ”By choosing to discriminate against Mr. Pryce on the basis of his race, Equity has further violated fundamental principles of Federal and state human rights laws, as well as of Federal labor laws.”

… The dispute over Mr. Pryce’s appearance on Broadway began when David Henry Hwang, the Tony Award-winning author of ”M. Butterfly,” and B. D. Wong, who won a Tony Award as best supporting actor in that play, complained to Equity.

You see, B.D. Wong felt he racially deserved the starring role of the half-French / half-Vietnamese character because Jonathan Pryce is 100% Welsh, and Wales is part of Great Britain, and Great Britain and France have often been enemies, whereas B.D. is 100% Chinese, and look how well the Chinese and Vietnamese have always gotten along. So you can see it is simple genetic arithmetic.

No, wait … that’s not it …

Instead, it’s much simpler: the Pryce is white and no Wongs make a wrong.

No that’s still too complicated. Okay, here’s the essence:

White is Bad.

Not white is Good.

Eventually, Mackintosh’s brinkmanship paid off and he opened on Broadway with the first ever $100 tickets. Pryce won a Tony.

But since then, no white man has been allowed to play the Eurasian role in the United States.

What I don’t get is this.

MISS SAIGON seems to me a case of ‘sexual imperialism’ that romanticizes pairing of white male and yellow female.
Why would any Asian guy want to be part of such musical?

It’d be like some lowlife white cuck wanting to be part of a musical that glorifies black male and white female pairing.

Yellow guys are so focused on the small picture — “we want that role!!!” — that they fail to see the big picture — “yellow girl belongs to white male”.

Looks like Asian girls are a story of the stupidity of Asian guys(who fail to realize that they are the main losers in a globalized sexual culture).

I think that Hwang, rather like Anthony Perkins*, has managed to overcome Gayish tendencies:

He lives in New York City with his wife, actress Kathryn Layng, and their children, Noah David and Eva Veanne.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Henry_Hwang#Personal_life

    *

While young, Perkins was a very shy person, especially in the company of women.[7] According to the posthumous biography Split Image by Charles Winecoff, he had exclusively same-sex relationships until his late 30s, including with actors Rock Hudson and Tab Hunter; artist Christopher Makos; dancer Rudolf Nureyev; composer/lyricist Stephen Sondheim; and dancer-choreographer Grover Dale.[8] Perkins has been described as one of the two great men in the life of French author Patrick Loiseau.[9]
Perkins reportedly had his first heterosexual experience at age 39 with actress Victoria Principal[10][11] on location filming The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean in 1971.[7] He met photographer Berinthia "Berry" Berenson the following year at a party in New York City.[7] They married when he was age 41, on August 9, 1973 and had two sons: actor Oz Perkins (b. February 2, 1974), and musician Elvis Perkins (b. February 9, 1976).

Of course, Perkins died of AIDS, so maybe he had a relapse:

Diagnosed with HIV during the filming of Psycho IV, Perkins died at his Los Angeles home on September 12, 1992, from AIDS-related[13][14][15] pneumonia at age 60.[16] His wife died nine years later, in the September 11 attacks

The barring of Mr. Pryce is insupportable on every level. By refusing to permit a white actor to play a Eurasian role, Equity makes a mockery of the hard-won principles of non-traditional casting and practices a hypocritical reverse racism. This is a policy that if applied with an even hand would bar Laurence Olivier’s Othello, Pearl Bailey’s Dolly Levi, and the appearances of Morgan Freeman in ”The Taming of the Shrew” and Denzel Washington in ”Richard III” in Central Park this summer. Right now in London, to take only one of hundreds of examples that could be cited to puncture Equity’s position, a black English actress, Josette Simon, is playing the character modeled on Marilyn Monroe in a National Theater production of Arthur Miller’s ”After the Fall.”

“But since then, no white man has been allowed to play the Eurasian role in the United States.”

I think stuff like this matters more in movies where physical details do matter. Verity is a part of the appeal of movies, especially with those looming close ups.

But in stage dramas and musicals, it’s the performance that matters more. This is surely true in opera. This is why even a fatsoess can get away with playing a beautiful woman. You can overlook her lardassness and tubbiness and just focus on her performance.

My beef with MISS SAIGON is its pure cheese. I heard 15 min of it on CD and quit.
But then, I refuse to watch/listen to stuff like WICKED, PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, and rest of that crap. A few minutes of HAMILTON was enough.
This kind of kitsch that is really trash or mediocrity packaged to the semi-educated masses as ‘culture’ is insufferable.

Some people just love that stuff. I knew this Jewish girl who used to be addicted to PHANTOM OF THE OPERA and went to so many performances.
And another friend was addicted to musical version of VIEW FROM A BRIDGE or something or other. Kitsch!!!
Some people don’t get real culture. But they feel above the usual trash on TV and movies. So, they think they are partaking of Kultur by attending expensive musicals.

CATS was a big thing in the 80s. I think it had one decent song. But gimme a break.

Here's the amusing thing - Hwang is doing the whole racial grievance thing without actually being interested in or appreciative of Chinese culture, except as a prop for his career ambitions, if this interview is any indication. He's a white guy in yellowface and basically an aggressive schnorrer demanding his race quota bennies.

Sometime in the early 1990s, the U.S. government created stricter regulations for VOC emissions on automotive paint. The result was that manufacturers had to change their process rather quickly, and it wasn't adequately tested in many cases. This is why there are so many cars from the 90s and early 00s with delaminating paint jobs. It isn't just because these cars are old; note that you don't see this on cars from the 1980s. You won't see this on most cars from the past 10-15 years either, because the car companies eventually did get the replacement formulas right (though, as you noticed, it took some longer than others).

Of course, the problem with principles is they bind one's hands.

For power, you need to play fast and loose, adapt and shift depending on the situation.

Principles can be on your side one day, but turn against you in the future.

It's like free speech is clearly on the side of anti-PC voices today.

Machiavelli's Prince knows only one principle: the art of the play with the game of power.

So, prince-plays are better than principles.

And we have former than the latter today.

There was a time when Jews used to be totally for separation of church and state.
They figured US is all about Jews vs Christians, so separation of church and state would help Jews against Christian whites.

But then, diversity happened, and Jews needed new allies among Muslims, Sikhs, and etc. So, total separation of church and state was no longer very useful.
So now, Jews are willing to come up with cultural rationale to allow Sikhs to wear their funny-towels in the military. And even universities that receive public funding are supposed to offer mosques and prayer rooms.

It'd be interesting if some school becomes all Muslim and demands that classes start with prayer to Allah.

Hey. Hey. Hey! This is EQUITY.
    , @Thea
I suspect power is the only principle they hold. White people sucks is just a useful tool to cement that today. If it stops working, they will find something else awful.

"That might change as China becomes a dominant military and economic power."

Chinese military power will never extend beyond Asia.

Chinese economic power will lack in innovation. US attracts the best minds, and even lots of smart Chinese come to the US and don't return.
And too many immigrant Chinese women have children with non-Chinese men. I think Chinese identity and culture have no meaning outside China UNLESS Chinese settle in 'inferior' cultures like Indonesia or Philippines. Asians are into hierarchy. So, when Chinese settle in Southeast Asia and see local dummies, they keep their Chinese identity and pride. But when Chinese come to the West, they see something superior and submit to it and lose Chinese-ness.
From my experience of Hindus and Chinese, the former(for whatever reason) are better at keeping the culture. So many Chinese-Americans I see are just trash, not much different from Filos and Korons. Tattoos, rap-imitation, NBA-worship. And Chinese women are materialistic, vapid, and shallow. They just want to be 'American' and marry outside the race.

But then, one could argue China has LOTS OF PEOPLE. But its demographics is sinking fast. Han Chinese used to be 97% of population. Now, it's down to 89%. Soon, Muslim numbers will rise while Han numbers continue to dwindle.
And even if Chinese do arrive in US in huge numbers, US has a lot of other people who also arrive in huge numbers. Also, there is no taboo against China-bashing. So, rise in Chinese power can easily be countered and condemned. Chinese, along with Iranians and Russians, are OK targets for bashing by any group. And Chinese lack the knack to change this.

Also, Chinese lack chutzpah. With all their economic might in SE Asia, they still fail to gain control of those nations like Jews gained control of so much of the West.
So, Chinese will never amount to anything more than middle-management in the US.

But Canada and Australia are worth worrying about. India and China can demographically take over those nations and turn them into giant Hawaiis. And that'd be a huge loss for Anglosphere.

"I’m not inclined to argue we should be more lenient toward people who beat other people with hammers."

The point is, if the only thing serving as a deterrent to beating someone with a hammer is the added-on "hate crime" designation, clearly the legal penalties for beating someone with a hammer are too light in general.

Using a "hate crime" designation only serves as an ever-thinner pretense for severely punishing un-PC speech. Any instance of disturbing the peace becomes an occasion for a serious felony if you're saying the wrong thing at the time.

In the meantime, what about the run-of-the-mill person who gets beaten by a hammer by a black in a common street attack? Or by anyone? Doesn't that person deserve adequate protection of the law?

Liberals used to be so naive and think that principles mattered.

Now they understand that the only principle is White Is Bad.

Of course, the problem with principles is they bind one’s hands.

For power, you need to play fast and loose, adapt and shift depending on the situation.

Principles can be on your side one day, but turn against you in the future.

It’s like free speech is clearly on the side of anti-PC voices today.

Machiavelli’s Prince knows only one principle: the art of the play with the game of power.

It’d be interesting if some school becomes all Muslim and demands that classes start with prayer to Allah.

That might change as China becomes a dominant military and economic power.

“That might change as China becomes a dominant military and economic power.”

Chinese military power will never extend beyond Asia.

Chinese economic power will lack in innovation. US attracts the best minds, and even lots of smart Chinese come to the US and don’t return.
And too many immigrant Chinese women have children with non-Chinese men. I think Chinese identity and culture have no meaning outside China UNLESS Chinese settle in ‘inferior’ cultures like Indonesia or Philippines.
They just want to be ‘American’ and marry outside the race.

But then, one could argue China has LOTS OF PEOPLE. But its demographics is sinking fast. Han Chinese used to be 97% of population. Now, it’s down to 89%.

And that’d be a huge loss for Anglosphere.

A long time ago I saw Brock Peters (famous black guy) play Otello at the Arena stage in Washington DC. Last year I saw a much less famous black actor playing Falstaff at a local Shakespeare in the Oakland Park production.

Both had the same fault - their voices were wrong. Peters found that the audience which didn't seem to realize that the play was a tragedy, was laughing wherever it thought was appropriate. Peters sensed that he was losing control of the paly so he made everything 'bigger'. But that only made the audience laugh all the more.

The unknown black actor who played Falstaff (what was that casting all about?) couldn't be understood. Both I think suffered from having too low a vocal pitch. Blacks have a normal vocal pitch about a third of an octave below the normal range for white men. (Think James Earl Jones or Morgan Freeman).

But those sonorous bass tones make it hard to understand the words on a legitimate stage.

Speaking of Asians, have you heard about the "hate crime" attack in LA Koreatown? A man asked a woman if she was Korean, and brutally beat her with a hammer when she said she was. So among other things he has been charged with a hate crime ... except he's Korean too!

“So among other things he has been charged with a hate crime … except he’s Korean too!”

I suppose we can split hairs.

It’s maybe Korean visitor vs Korean-American.

I think Koreans are among the most ‘trans-racial’ people on earth.
High levels of plastic surgery, hair-dyeing, and race-mixing.

So, it could be Korean vs trans-Korean.

PS. If a white person attacks Rachel Dolezal for being a negress, is that a ‘hate crime’?

Sometime in the early 1990s, the U.S. government created stricter regulations for VOC emissions on automotive paint. The result was that manufacturers had to change their process rather quickly, and it wasn’t adequately tested in many cases. This is why there are so many cars from the 90s and early 00s with delaminating paint jobs. It isn’t just because these cars are old; note that you don’t see this on cars from the 1980s. You won’t see this on most cars from the past 10-15 years either, because the car companies eventually did get the replacement formulas right (though, as you noticed, it took some longer than others).

If we must have fidelity of role to ethnicity, then only Viets should play Viets, only Russians should play Russians, only Germans should play Germans, only Egyptians should play Egyptians, and etc.

Even though I don’t want any such rule enforced on the industry, I would personally like to see more faithful casting. As a movie person, I like to lose myself in the story and want to feel I’m seeing something real. And it just feels more real when it’s closer to the actual culture.

Recently, I saw UGLY AMERICAN again, and even though the Japanese actor did a pretty good job as a southeastern Asian revolutionary, it felt Hollywood than real.

Now, there are exceptions to the rule. The most famous case is Marlon Brando as Don Corleone. James Caan, who is Jewish, made a splendid Sonny. And Moe Green was actually played by an Italian guy. Still, I’m glad Al Pacino was played by someone who really looks Italian.

But then, he made a splendid Cuban in SCARFACE and a marvelous Rican in CARLITO’S WAY.

If the acting and makeup are good enough, it can work.

Would Robert Redford have worked for Michael Corleone? He was one of the first choices. I’m glad that didn’t happen. There is something strange about Brando that can make him play different roles from Mexican to Nazi German. But Redford is always too waspish.

Some faces are more malleable, others are more distinctly one thing or another.
Gere could play anyone from Anglo to Jew to Italian to even half-Asian in Kurosawa’s RHAPSODY IN AUGUST. But Clint Eastwood is just Anglo all the way. If he tried to play Mexican, it’d be funny as hell. Heston as Mexican in TOUCH OF EVIL was a riot… though I suppose there are European Mexicans.

B.D. Wong and David Hwang aren’t really all that concerned with the question of what Asian women are looking for in a man.

Perkins reportedly had his first heterosexual experience at age 39 with actress Victoria Principal[10][11] on location filming The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean in 1971.[7] He met photographer Berinthia “Berry” Berenson the following year at a party in New York City.[7] They married when he was age 41, on August 9, 1973 and had two sons: actor Oz Perkins (b.

A “potato queen” is a gay Asian man who returns this exclusive attraction to his white admirers. But my favorite label has to be “sticky rice,” a hilarious title for a gay Asian man who only dates other Asian men. Sticky rice is the forbidden carb of rice queens.

For the millionth time, there’s no such thing as a “racial majority” in this world. Western ballet companies are overstocked with Asian, primarily Japanese, female dancers, so the answer is yes. Dancers don't need to be very tall, as in fact height is physically detrimental to the execution of many difficult techniques and make partnering difficult. So there is actually an upper height limit at the most demanding schools and companies. The physique desired isn't for long legs per say but rather legs that are proportionally long relative to the torso in an overall petite frame. The pointe shoes aid this illusion.

    Wong dates white guys.

That seems to be rather common in the Gay Asian world:

many of these hot Asians don’t seem to want each other. Why is that?

I live in Westwood, right next to UCLA (which stands for “U C Lotsa Asians”). Walking to the gym every day, I notice that the campus seems to be coupling grounds for one particular type of interracial pair: the white person and the “hot Asian.” This is by far the most common interracial couple that I see in California.

Gay culture, of course, has a lot of snarky fun with this phenomenon. A “rice queen” is a white gay man who has a strong proclivity for gay men of Asian descent. A “potato queen” is a gay Asian man who returns this exclusive attraction to his white admirers. But my favorite label has to be “sticky rice,” a hilarious title for a gay Asian man who only dates other Asian men. Sticky rice is the forbidden carb of rice queens.

I find this hilarious. Fareed Zika-virus, the famous BS plagiarist accuses Trump of being a BS artist. Okay, fair enough, Trump has dished out his share of BS.

But why are Asian-Indians like Zikavirus in the US? Because they can’t stand the stench of the Human Shi* artists who crap all over India. Speaking of stenches, what does India smell of but curry and human doo doo and cow doo doo? And did anyone smell an old hindu woman’s fart in an elevator? I guarantee it will even turn the biggest prog into a nationalist.

Zikavirus needs to serve his own nation. He needs to go back and instruct his people to stop filling every field and river with the stench of human shi*.

Trump’s BS isn’t fouling US rivers and streets. It is the human shi* of 1/2 the population of India that is befouling that place.

Zakaria, go back to your nation and help your own people. Teach them well. And shut up, moron.

If we must have fidelity of role to ethnicity, then only Viets should play Viets, only Russians should play Russians, only Germans should play Germans, only Egyptians should play Egyptians, and etc.

Even though I don't want any such rule enforced on the industry, I would personally like to see more faithful casting. As a movie person, I like to lose myself in the story and want to feel I'm seeing something real. And it just feels more real when it's closer to the actual culture.

Still, I'm glad Al Pacino was played by someone who really looks Italian.

But then, he made a splendid Cuban in SCARFACE and a marvelous Rican in CARLITO'S WAY.

If the acting and makeup are good enough, it can work.

Would Robert Redford have worked for Michael Corleone? He was one of the first choices. I'm glad that didn't happen. There is something strange about Brando that can make him play different roles from Mexican to Nazi German. But Redford is always too waspish.

Some faces are more malleable, others are more distinctly one thing or another.
Gere could play anyone from Anglo to Jew to Italian to even half-Asian in Kurosawa's RHAPSODY IN AUGUST. But Clint Eastwood is just Anglo all the way. If he tried to play Mexican, it'd be funny as hell. Heston as Mexican in TOUCH OF EVIL was a riot... though I suppose there are European Mexicans.

Granted, the sentence as written is quite amusing, though when he said "real" I think he meant something more along the lines of "that makes an earnest effort at verisimilitude."

The reason they have to import so many foreign doctors is that the US medical schools keep the supply artificially low. Most states have only two or three medical schools. Georgia, a fairly large state, has only four, and three of those are housed at private universities (and one of those is Morehouse, which is almost 100% Black). When you factor in AA admissions for Blacks and Hispanics, the number of highly qualified Whites (and for that matter American-born Asians) that are rejected from medical schools could more than take the place of the foreign doctors they are importing.
    , @Chrisnonymous
This article typifies the dishonesty of the MSM: a Paki surgeon comes to the US and can't cut it as a surgeon here, but because he's been a surgeon before, he's marginally better at drawing blood (a skill not actually performed by doctors after they finish medical training) than other medical trainees who have never done this before, and the article concludes that it's a blessing he's in the US. What a crock of shit. If drawing blood made you a good doctor, we could send all the high-school-diploma phlebotomists to medical school pronto.

Is there any modern form of mainstream entertainment that isn't explicitly anti-white, anti-male, and pro-social justice? Just curious. It's getting so pervasive that at the risk of sounding like a curmudgeon, I'm finding myself watching older movies and TV shows because of it. At least there is a way to maintain some credibility with my "educated" friends by saying that you stick with the classics. It's getting awful out there.

Generally, Asian males are box-office poison unless it's someone like Jackie Chan doing funny stuff.

There is a cult community into Asian Junk Cinema, but it's not mainstream.

    https://www.amazon.com/Asian-Trash-Cinema-Thomas-Weisser/dp/B0006PEDVG

Usually, even when the story is based on Asians, the change the characters into non-Asians to make it more palatable. 21 is a good example. But as movies are a business, the industry doesn't want to take chances.

    http://www.cracked.com/article_16478_7-movies-based-true-story-that-are-complete-bullshit.html

What Asians should do is go for indie movies with a more limited audience. With low-cost of film-making and new means of distribution, something worthy might result from this.

And they should write their own plays and musicals with their own kind in mind.

They are trying to be part of something broad and generic in which they don't really have a place.
They should go for niche. Often, that is more interesting.

It was this tantrum over Pryce’s Miss Saigon casting that caused Charlton Heston–who really was a fair-minded, race-blind, content-of-your-character “liberal” and not just a canting hypocrite, unlike so many other former civil rights activists–to resign from Equity in disgust, blasting the union for its “obscenely racist” behavior, and stating that “I thought the idea was to get the best actor for the part, no matter what color or religion or politics.” Now, of course, you’re only allowed to say something like that if you want to cast a minority in a white role; if you try to cast a white in a minority role, you’ll get screams of cultural appropriation and racism (unless you’re trying to appease the Communist Chinese by de-Tibetanizing the Ancient One, or trying to avoid offending Sikhs by turning Khan Noonien Singh into a pasty, ferret-faced Britisher; then the screams will be muted).

Among movies I do see, half the time it’s re-viewings of stuff that give me special pleasure or that I find interesting for thematic or emotional reasons. Certain movies just have that quality. It either feels very much like home and provide familiarity OR feels like permanent exile and endlessly fascinates. Some movies have both qualities.

Two whites can make no Wong, but two Wongs can make it right.

Generally, Asian males are box-office poison unless it’s someone like Jackie Chan doing funny stuff.

There is a cult community into Asian Junk Cinema, but it’s not mainstream.

    https://www.amazon.com/Asian-Trash-Cinema-Thomas-Weisser/dp/B0006PEDVG

Usually, even when the story is based on Asians, the change the characters into non-Asians to make it more palatable. 21 is a good example. But as movies are a business, the industry doesn’t want to take chances.

    http://www.cracked.com/article_16478_7-movies-based-true-story-that-are-complete-bullshit.html

What Asians should do is go for indie movies with a more limited audience. With low-cost of film-making and new means of distribution, something worthy might result from this.

And they should write their own plays and musicals with their own kind in mind.

They are trying to be part of something broad and generic in which they don’t really have a place.
They should go for niche. Often, that is more interesting.

Do they have legs long enough to do ballet?

Western ballet companies are overstocked with Asian, primarily Japanese, female dancers, so the answer is yes. Dancers don’t need to be very tall, as in fact height is physically detrimental to the execution of many difficult techniques and make partnering difficult. So there is actually an upper height limit at the most demanding schools and companies. The physique desired isn’t for long legs per say but rather legs that are proportionally long relative to the torso in an overall petite frame. The pointe shoes aid this illusion.

For a software geek (specialty is marketing), I have seen the world of ballet unusually up-close and personal because my first wife was a Houston Ballet soloist, and also the heroines of three episodes of the TV series concept on which, over the last couple of decades, it has become apparent my real life is based ("Touched By An Angel Investor") were "Big Six"ers as well. I accidentally learned pas-de-deux in LA in the early 1980s because I, a financial supporter of Los Angeles Ballet, ended up getting pressed into service to do finger pirouettes with a 5’-8” tall company apprentice. I was 6’-0” tall and no man shorter could get his hand sufficiently far over "Katherine's" head when she was on pointe.

I was in the computer lab when God was handing out athletic coordination, so I was never able to connect a bat or a racket with a ball or catch a ball. I could not even manage to throw a ball. But, for some reason, every pas-de-deux lift/movement worked the first time, every time with me with every dancer.

    Go figure.

So what is not to like about a close-contact sport done with young, beautiful (occupational requirement) young women wearing almost no clothes? You end up with your hands on young women’s bodies in places that required a marriage certificate when I was coming of age! I took up pas-de-deux as my hobby. But first I hit the gym and pumped iron until I puked (which guys who can actually dance, like, *steps* don’t feel a need to do, apparently), because your ballerina is not *safe* in your hands if you can’t just “muscle” it if one of you make a mistake. Every serious dancer has been hurt in a partnering accident, but never with me.

The prototypical ballerina is 5'-6" and 110 pounds of solid muscle. Artistic directors employ taller/heavier girls, but it’s really difficult for them to make principal dancer. On the other hand, Ben Pierce’s making principal dancer at San Francisco Ballet was not hurt by his being tall enough to partner Muriel Maffre.

Ballerinas would be taller if male ballet dancers were ran taller and had more upper-body strength. When Peter Martins stopped dancing for New York City Ballet, there was no other man tall enough to partner Suzanne Farrell. As for weight, consider:

was filmed by “60 Minutes” in October of 1997 as part of a special on the greatest male ballet dancer of that era, Carlos Acosta. (I was in the audience and my then-wife and I went out salsa dancing with him afterwards.) If you follow the link, you will see Mr. Acosta partner Houston Ballet’s prima ballerina Lauren Anderson in the grand pas-de-deux from “Don Quixote”. What you will *not* see, however, are that dance’s signature three one-armed overhead lifts.

Why not? Lauren was too *heavy*. Janie Parker, Houston Ballet’s other prima of that era, had the same problem with her partner (and later husband), Li Cinxin--at 120 pounds, Janie was just too much for him to press overhead without noticeably straining:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWKsqVs7lUY

I never partnered Lauren, but I learned when she surprised me by walking into the kitchen of my townhome in Houston’s Montrose area one morning (long story), by just her arms musculature, I swear she would have been able to lift Janie. I *did* do an overhead lift with Miss Parker at a Houston Mexican restaurant back then (to the delight and amazement of our fellow diners), and she was at least 120 pounds. I could have done the “Don Q.” one-arm overhead lift with her, but only because she had a powerful jump.

There is a huge experienced difference between having to lift 110 pounds and 120 pounds. But there is also a problem with weight that can’t be solved by strength. No matter how strong a man’s upper body is, if he only outweighs his partner by 30 pounds, her flying off balance in, say, a whip turn will pull him with her.

There are so many applicants for so few positions in America's "Big Six" (New York City Ballet, American Ballet Theater, Joffrey Ballet, Boston Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, and Houston Ballet) companies that those companies can be very picky. I don’t understand why in European companies they would be overrepresented. As of last time I looked, they were not in the Big Six.

Returning to my experience with being married to a ballerina, even though she was “just” 110 pounds, I had to be her rehearsal partner for roles too tricky (think “Three Preludes, 2nd and 3rd movements) to do the *first* time when a lot of fumbling necessarily goes on. People don’t usually wear pointe shoes on racquetball courts, but they worked in a pinch..

The point is, if the only thing serving as a deterrent to beating someone with a hammer is the added-on “hate crime” designation, clearly the legal penalties for beating someone with a hammer are too light in general.

Using a “hate crime” designation only serves as an ever-thinner pretense for severely punishing un-PC speech. Any instance of disturbing the peace becomes an occasion for a serious felony if you’re saying the wrong thing at the time.

In the meantime, what about the run-of-the-mill person who gets beaten by a hammer by a black in a common street attack? Or by anyone? Doesn’t that person deserve adequate protection of the law?

"But since then, no white man has been allowed to play the Eurasian role in the United States."

I think stuff like this matters more in movies where physical details do matter. Verity is a part of the appeal of movies, especially with those looming close ups.

But in stage dramas and musicals, it's the performance that matters more.

This kind of kitsch that is really trash or mediocrity packaged to the semi-educated masses as 'culture' is insufferable.

Some people just love that stuff. I knew this Jewish girl who used to be addicted to PHANTOM OF THE OPERA and went to so many performances.
And another friend was addicted to musical version of VIEW FROM A BRIDGE or something or other. Kitsch!!!
Some people don't get real culture. But they feel above the usual trash on TV and movies. So, they think they are partaking of Kultur by attending expensive musicals.

CATS was a big thing in the 80s. I think it had one decent song. But gimme a break.

An ex-boyfriend of mine “Treated” me to “Cats”, during which, I was in excruciating pain. Truly a horrific experience. Broadway shows are embarrassing to me in the same way as Miss America talent competitions are.

In Table 42, entitled "Personal crimes of violence, 2005, percent distribution of single-offender victimizations, based on race of victims, by type of crime and perceived race of offender," we learn that there were 111,590 white victims and 36,620 black victims of rape or sexual assault in 2005

<blockquote>In the 111,590 cases in which the victim of rape or sexual assault was white, 44.5 percent of the offenders were white, and 33.6 percent of the offenders were black. In the 36,620 cases in which the victim of rape or sexual assault was black, 100 percent of the offenders were black, and 0.0 percent of the offenders were white. The table explains that 0.0 percent means that there were under 10 incidents nationally.

The table does not gives statistics for Hispanic victims and offenders. But the bottom line on interracial white/black and black/white rape is clear:

For Othello, get a genuine North African moor.

Using a sub-saharan black for the role is all wrong.

A long time ago I saw Brock Peters (famous black guy) play Otello at the Arena stage in Washington DC. Last year I saw a much less famous black actor playing Falstaff at a local Shakespeare in the Oakland Park production.

Both had the same fault – their voices were wrong. Peters found that the audience which didn’t seem to realize that the play was a tragedy, was laughing wherever it thought was appropriate. Peters sensed that he was losing control of the paly so he made everything ‘bigger’. But that only made the audience laugh all the more.

The unknown black actor who played Falstaff (what was that casting all about?) couldn’t be understood. Both I think suffered from having too low a vocal pitch. Blacks have a normal vocal pitch about a third of an octave below the normal range for white men. (Think James Earl Jones or Morgan Freeman).

But those sonorous bass tones make it hard to understand the words on a legitimate stage.

No, only some do. The average Welshman is undistinguishable from an Englishman.

I suspect that the reason that Tom Jones had that bronze cast to his complexion was from the tube of ‘bronzer’ that he rubbed all over his face.

After the divorce when I started dating again I joined a service called "Table for Six". The idea was that you had dinner with three single men and three single women. I often got the conversation started by asking the question - "Who is the best actor in movies?" If the girls said Al Pacino or Robert De Niro - I would mark them down as dull witted. Those Italians mostly play only Italian gangsters. They have a few stock Italian gangster moves which they use over and over.

I always said - Jonathan Price. He was a guy with huge range. His only fault was that none of the women I was looking to ensnare had ever heard of him. I had to switch to Kevin Kline. Both of these actors could play comedy and tragedy and Kline at least could also sing and dance.

Have you ever seen Pacino try to do comedy?

Western ballet companies are overstocked with Asian, primarily Japanese, female dancers, so the answer is yes. Dancers don't need to be very tall, as in fact height is physically detrimental to the execution of many difficult techniques and make partnering difficult. So there is actually an upper height limit at the most demanding schools and companies. The physique desired isn't for long legs per say but rather legs that are proportionally long relative to the torso in an overall petite frame. The pointe shoes aid this illusion.

    > Dancers don’t need to be very tall, as in fact
    > height is physically detrimental to the execution
    > of many difficult techniques and make partnering
    > difficult. So there is actually an upper height limit
    > at the most demanding schools and companies.

For a software geek (specialty is marketing), I have seen the world of ballet unusually up-close and personal because my first wife was a Houston Ballet soloist, and also the heroines of three episodes of the TV series concept on which, over the last couple of decades, it has become apparent my real life is based (“Touched By An Angel Investor”) were “Big Six”ers as well. I accidentally learned pas-de-deux in LA in the early 1980s because I, a financial supporter of Los Angeles Ballet, ended up getting pressed into service to do finger pirouettes with a 5’-8” tall company apprentice. I was 6’-0” tall and no man shorter could get his hand sufficiently far over “Katherine’s” head when she was on pointe.

The prototypical ballerina is 5′-6″ and 110 pounds of solid muscle.

    >

Janie Parker, Houston Ballet’s other prima of that era, had the same problem with her partner (and later husband), Li Cinxin–at 120 pounds, Janie was just too much for him to press overhead without noticeably straining:

There are so many applicants for so few positions in America’s “Big Six” (New York City Ballet, American Ballet Theater, Joffrey Ballet, Boston Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, and Houston Ballet) companies that those companies can be very picky.
