This video from Spain reminds me of Neal Stephenson’s 1992 sci-fi novel Snow Crash, which features the Raft, a vast agglomeration of flotsam inhabited by impoverished south and southeast Asian refugees drifting inexorably across the Pacific, headed for California:

“When [the Raft] gets to California, it will enter a new phase of its life cycle. It will shed much of its sprawling improvised bulk as a few hundred thousand Refus cut themselves loose and paddle to shore. The only Refus who make it that far are, by definition, the ones who were agile enough to make it out to the Raft in the first place, resourceful enough to survive the agonizingly slow passage through arctic waters, and tough enough not to get killed by any of the other Refus. Nice guys, all of them. Just the kind of people you’d like to have showing up on your private beach in groups of a few thousand.” [p. 272]

Libertarians view Snow Crash as a utopian novel.

Snow Crash... these people should be called 'crashers'.

But unlike party crashers, they never leave.

    Even locusts eventually leave.

    Those crashers look Arab-like. Semi-civilized.

    This is far more troubling:

It's a Spanish policeman. They should be allowed to shoot.
    , @AnotherDad
Once you've ceded the right to use real force--to shoot--to protect your border ... it's just a joke.

If the Spanish public isn't willing to see pictures of their border guards shooting people when they bum rush the border or storm the beaches then they have given away Spain.

Same goes for America, Italy, Greece, Germany, France, Britain, etc. etc. It's fundamental. Without willingness to use force, you don't have a border. Without a border you don't have a nation.

(Yeah, male logic I know. Yonatan Zunger will no doubt educate me that i'm missing big picture female empathy ;-)
    , @Hyperborean
At least the Arabs, if they would stop with the dysgenic inbreeding and religious fanaticism, are capable of establishing halfway tolerable countries.

With the Africans, you might as well just drop a couple of dozen nuclear bombs to achieve the same civilization-destroying effect.

There is a growing effort to get rid of ‘cash’ in the EU ( US too) as access to the banking system maybe the final frontier/border control. If the ability to purchase the necessities of life can be denied to those who enter a country illegally by restricting access to the banking system then it doesn’t do a migrant any good to ‘show up’ in Italy or Spain without funds.

The African migrant could not sell junk from a blanket on the sidewalk in Rome or work illegally to eke out a living without a ‘cash’ payment system. The only way such a person could ‘stay’ would be to get an authorized government identity that allows for access to the banking system. That too could be restricted much as we do with SNAP/EBT cards in the US. The illegal migrant could only buy ‘food’ at government controlled ‘feeding stations’ and could no longer melt into an ethnic ghetto in a ‘cashless’ society.

While I am not unaware of the downside of going ‘cashless’ it maybe the only way to control population movement.

So your theory is, that if we empower bureaucrats to control every last detail of our lives, They will use their new found powers to restrict immigrants ( who these selfsame bureaucrats are bringing in by the boatload), rather than to quash all dissent among the native population? Talk about the triumph of hope over experience!
    , @neutral
That is a truly bizarre theory, I am guessing that you don't like cash, but in terms of mass immigration and politics it will have absolutely no effect on it. You fail to see that the EU establishment openly want these people to enter. They can just as easily sell their junk on the sidewalk with a cashless payment system, I fail to see what would prevent this, they would by law be given free accounts, no EU head would ever deny them that.

Occasionally I watch the televised bail/first appearance court hearings in Florida. Yesterday I did and appearing in court was one Firas Sibai , Syrian refugee. He was a well spoken man of 48 in jail for violating an injunction for domestic violence. It got interesting when the judge queried Mr. Sibai on his income for purposes of a court appointed attorney. Mr. Sibai had none but the judge ordered him to surrender his passport out of fear Sibai might flee with the children based on his travels to and from Syria.

Mr. Sibai said his wife had worked ( but no longer did) and he had lived off of her earnings. The judge asked Sibai if he had any property or assets. No, he didn’t but his father, in Syria, did. The judge was skeptical as to this cosmopolitan wife beaters answers but allowed for the appointment of a public defender upon Sibai completing a financial disclosure affidavit.

Merely pointing out the ONLY effective way to avoid an international migratory free for all would be to end 'cash' purchases and make banking access the quid pro quo for residency/travel. Since banks do a very good job of record keeping and with no way to pay for food, shelter etc in a cashless society there would be no ability to function in Europe even if you could get there if you were excluded from the banking system.

  19. It’s a shame Spain doesn’t have an army to prevent invasions. It’d be great; even better would be a transnational military alliance of civilised nations cooperating to protect each other. Given the locations of most such nations, it might be called the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation…or something. With the Cold War over, any such outfit is perfectly positioned to confront invading barbarians in the newest existential threat to its members.

    Cue Theodoric of York….

Believe it or not, in ‘liberal’ Barcelona, the other day, there was a huge street demonstration against ‘foreign holidaymakers’ ie Britons and other north Europeans travelling to Spain in the height of summer for a bit of sunshine and supporting the Spanish economy on the way.
Apparently, the tourists were being accused of all manners of nastiness from ‘taking accommodation’ upwards.

The demo, and the ‘reasons’ behind it were lovingly broadcast by BBC TV news.

Funnily enough, the Spaniards would never but never mount a similar ‘anti illegal African immigrant’ demo, nor would the BBC lovingly report it.

In the US illegals have been known to obtain bank accounts. I met a fellow once who was an illegal from Mexico. He had an account with Bank of America. He used his Mexican voter ID card to set up this account. In fact BoA had lifted the photo from his Mexican voter ID and put it on his BoA debit/ATM card. This in turn was the "ID" he used to flash to Americans to show he had "documents".

The banks love to cater to these guys because the wire funds back home and the bank takes a cut.

Did you notice when Ronald Reagan let the ZionCons produce the first several million refugees in the USA?

    How Neocons Destabilized Europe

    https://consortiumnews.com/2015/09/07/how-neocons-destabilized-europe/

When I first encountered the neocons in the 1980s, they had been given Central America to play with. President Ronald Reagan had credentialed many of them, bringing into the U.S. government neocon luminaries such as Elliott Abrams and Robert Kagan. But Reagan mostly kept them out of the big-power realms: the Mideast and Europe.

Those strategic areas went to the “adults,” people like James Baker, George Shultz, Philip Habib and Brent Scowcroft. The poor Central Americans, as they tried to shed generations of repression and backwardness imposed by brutal right-wing oligarchies, faced U.S. neocon ideologues who unleashed death squads and even genocide against peasants, students and workers.

The result not surprisingly was a flood of refugees, especially from El Salvador and Guatemala, northward to the United States. The neocon “success” in the 1980s, crushing progressive social movements and reinforcing the oligarchic controls, left most countries of Central America in the grip of corrupt regimes and crime syndicates, periodically driving more waves of what Reagan called “feet people” through Mexico to the southern U.S. border…..

Once you’ve ceded the right to use real force–to shoot–to protect your border … it’s just a joke.

If the Spanish public isn’t willing to see pictures of their border guards shooting people when they bum rush the border or storm the beaches then they have given away Spain.

Same goes for America, Italy, Greece, Germany, France, Britain, etc. etc. It’s fundamental. Without willingness to use force, you don’t have a border. Without a border you don’t have a nation.

  33. Soooo…. its up to the migrants to prevent migrants coming to Spain? And if RT and its (non-Spanish) fans don’t like it so what? And apparently this is the fault of all the neocons in Spain.

    Big anti-migrant demonstrations in Spain-nope.

There is a growing effort to get rid of 'cash' in the EU ( US too) as access to the banking system maybe the final frontier/border control. If the ability to purchase the necessities of life can be denied to those who enter a country illegally by restricting access to the banking system then it doesn't do a migrant any good to 'show up' in Italy or Spain without funds.

The African migrant could not sell junk from a blanket on the sidewalk in Rome or work illegally to eke out a living without a 'cash' payment system. The only way such a person could 'stay' would be to get an authorized government identity that allows for access to the banking system. That too could be restricted much as we do with SNAP/EBT cards in the US. The illegal migrant could only buy 'food' at government controlled 'feeding stations' and could no longer melt into an ethnic ghetto in a 'cashless' society.

While I am not unaware of the downside of going 'cashless' it maybe the only way to control population movement.

Yeah just like all that CCTV and internet controls in Europe are used to deal with terrorists and not badthinkers.

No, I don't use drugs save alcohol on occasion.

Look, a government can do what it wants to so you can really only limit them by Treaty which is why we require a 2/3 vote to ratify them. If, and I say if, the EU and, e.g. the US were to abolish currency and only allow citizens, legal residents and travellers with valid visas access to the banking system the banks would enforce immigration law without any help from any government agency.

Credit cards wouldn't be any good without an attached bank account and no one could buy an airplane ticket or enroll in a school without a bank account. Sneak across the border and you are still in a no man's land where you can't buy anything in the new country without a bank account.

So you have to decide what is more important. Your nation or your currency?

Merely pointing out the ONLY effective way to avoid an international migratory free for all would be to end 'cash' purchases and make banking access the quid pro quo for residency/travel. Since banks do a very good job of record keeping and with no way to pay for food, shelter etc in a cashless society there would be no ability to function in Europe even if you could get there if you were excluded from the banking system.

This in turn was the “ID” he used to flash to Americans to show he had “documents”.

The banks love to cater to these guys because the wire funds back home and the bank takes a cut.

At least the Arabs, if they would stop with the dysgenic inbreeding and religious fanaticism, are capable of establishing halfway tolerable countries.

With the Africans, you might as well just drop a couple of dozen nuclear bombs to achieve the same civilization-destroying effect.

Snow Crash and Camp of Saints used Indians rather than blacks and arabs to be marginally PC.

What they got wrong honestly was the impoverished part. It isn't the dirt poor who migrate, but the middle strata of the third world.

No, Snow Crash used whomever could get to L. Bob Rife’s Raft. The fact that the Raft was following a route around the Pacific further limited it to whomever could reach the coast.
