From NBC News in Washington:

Eight-Foot Statue of Marion Barry Taking Shape

By Tom Sherwood

An 8-foot statue of “Mayor for Life” Marion Barry is taking shape. It’s set to be erected outside the John A. Wilson Building in downtown D.C. News4′s Tom Sherwood spoke with the sculptor, Steven Weitzman, on what he wanted to show.

At least it’s not as Chinese-looking as the 29′ statue of Martin Luther King on the National Mall that looks like a cross between Mike Tyson and Ming the Merciless.

In real life, of course, the feds got so tired of Mayor Barry’s crack-fueled antics that they more or less staged a coup, the famous Bitch-set-me-up! entrapment.

But, symbolically, who is more Current Year than Marion Barry?

He’s who we are.

The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards a Marion Barry statue.

I was born in Washington DC but I escaped to California after I got out of the army. Then I came back to go to grad school. The Washington I returned to was much different. For one thing, it had Marion Barry in it.

Washington was designed as a city run by Congress. All while I grew up a major political issue was "Home Rule". The alternative to Home Rule was rule by the congressional representatives of suburban Virginia and Maryland.

Somewhere in this time period the appointed black leader was Walter Washington. He was black but not very popular with local blacks. He was commonly called an "Uncle Tom" - and there was some justice to that charge. He was there to represent the interests of white suburban Virginia and Maryland.

In that environment Barry became not just another politician, but a potential liberator. The blacks that one would meet on the street had all their hopes invested in Barry. When Barry's feet of clay became obvious to everyone his popularity only grew. In black America there is a legendary trickster hero called Stagerlee. Stagerlee is naughty. He is mischievous. He is criminal. But mostly he is admired because he is always pulling tricks on whitey.

Barry became more and more a resistance symbol with each arrest.
    , @Pat Boyle
I appreciate the reference to "Ming the Merciless" but it does not appear apt. Ming in the serials was played by Charles Middleton and in the movie by Max von Sydow - both of whom are not even remotely Oriental looking. Both are dolichocephalic ectomorphs. They have extreme Nordic skulls.

    Make it hip and cool.

A statue of him smoking crack.

Marion Barry stood for black DC before extensive gentrification.

This would be a nostalgia piece… like an Indian statue in the West after Indians were put in reservations.

I like that hand gesture of the statue. You can put different stuff on it.

Crack pipe, gun, money, bottle of colt 45, etc. They should change it every year.

Reminds me vaguely of how proto-SJW mayor of Boston Kevin White got a statue of himself put in front of Faneuil Hall in Boston.

White was the mayor of Boston in the 70′s when the federal courts instituted busing and half the city moved to the suburbs while the other half was openly rioting and crime skyrocketed, and his administration was filled with corruption to the brim. And White kept promising to heal the racial divide and enforce busing to the letter, leading to the city nearly collapsing under his proto-SJW regime.

White had been promoted as an RFK-type lefty hero, and was once on the shortlist of potential Democrat V.P.’s. But his mismanagement of the busing in Boston and his corruption cost him dearly and his national appeal fell.

But somehow that anti-white clown got a statue of himself in front of a prominent Boston landmark.

History is retconned continuously by the Left. 1984 was, again, so prescient.

Optimist. The words coming out of leftists mouth have no correspondence to the thoughts in their heads. It is just a methodology to gain power. So this will continue until we have someone in power who executes everyone to the left of them. Or a new dark age.

A few interesting facts about Marion Shepilov Barry:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marion_Barry

1.) He gave himself the middle name “Shepilov” after Dimitri Shepilov, a Soviet official.

2.) He had a masters degree in chemistry

3.) and this: “In response to the 1972 blaxploitation film Super Fly, Barry quickly formed a protest group named Blacks Against Narcotics and Genocide (BANG). Barry said the film was harmful to black youth, and that it glorified drug abuse. BANG called for a boycott of the film.”

He certainly was an american original.

There are some Masters degree that can be thought of as terminal degrees. The best example is the MBA - the Master of Business Administration. If you want to learn enough business to go into business you get an MBA. Those who are not interested in going into business but want to stay in school and be an academic get a DBA.

But it's different in many of the sciences. The only degree that means much is the PhD. The Masters is reserved for those who wash out of doctoral programs. A Masters in Chemistry is the degree of bottle washers not of chemists.

Et in Arcadia ego: David Cassidy (1950 – 2017)

I’m very sad to hear about David Cassidy. There were times in the mid-1970s when he would come over to my house and we even started writing a song together. He was a very talented and nice person. Love & Mercy to David and his family. — Brian Wilson

Do you remember in the movie "The Battle of the Bulge" where the dirty Nazis put on American army uniforms and impersonated the good guys. Henry Fonda gets wise to them and has our guys ask suspected phony troops questions about baseball to establish the suspect's bona fides.

Steve, we have all learned, would do OK on baseball or golf, but I fear I would flunk any such Americanism test on pop culture. I know there was once a person called David Cassidy. I know that he just died and I know that he was a celebrity, but I never saw him on TV, and never saw one of his movies (did he make movies?). I never saw one of his concerts and have never heard one of his songs - written with Marion Barry or not.

So if interrogated I would be hard pressed to prove I lived through the America that also held this David Cassidy person. Andy Warhol supposedly said that in the future everyone will be famous for fifteen minutes. That future is here now. Everyone is famous although just why they are famous is unclear - at least to me.

Now that he has passed, will we see a typical-for-these-days post-mortem flurry of 'title' sex assault allegations, now that the 'burden of proof' is a so much easier since the key witness is no longer here?
Is there a 'mountain of cash' tied up in the Cassidy estate?

    Damn that autocorrect!

The very epitome of the ‘big man.’ Sure, the city’s finances were wrecked while Barry whored and smoked his way through the years, but he was theirs. He was also smart enough to a) blow up the size of the city government to ensure thousands of households connected him with their economic well-being and b) did the same with his ‘summer jobs program’ in which otherwise unemployable ‘youth’ were paid well above minimum wage to do nothing all day, thereby assuring their future political loyalty.

As a former longtime DC resident, despite the overwhelmingly progressive tilt of white residents towards progressive politics, the one major and irreparable political fault line was the near-universal admiration/tolerance of Barry by blacks and the total loathing of him by whites. You could start a heated argument with almost any black person by criticizing Barry, regardless of how well you got on in regards to anything else.

Reminds me vaguely of how proto-SJW mayor of Boston Kevin White got a statue of himself put in front of Faneuil Hall in Boston.

White was the mayor of Boston in the 70's when the federal courts instituted busing and half the city moved to the suburbs while the other half was openly rioting and crime skyrocketed, and his administration was filled with corruption to the brim. And White kept promising to heal the racial divide and enforce busing to the letter, leading to the city nearly collapsing under his proto-SJW regime.

White had been promoted as an RFK-type lefty hero, and was once on the shortlist of potential Democrat V.P.'s. But his mismanagement of the busing in Boston and his corruption cost him dearly and his national appeal fell.

But somehow that anti-white clown got a statue of himself in front of a prominent Boston landmark.

History is retconned continuously by the Left. 1984 was, again, so prescient.

Yeah, well, Whitey was followed by Raybo the Drunk and Mumbles Menino, and now they have Mah-tee the recovering drunk, so White might as well be fricking Cicero by comparison.

Cool idea. I remember back in the sixties when Aurora Plastics made plastic model assembly kits of all the popular movie horror figures of the time (Dracula, Frankenstein, etc.) We’d all get together for monster/horror model kit assembly and paint and glue sniffing parties and then go outside and burn and blow up with firecrackers the plastic model planes we had built the week before.

White DC pols like Jack Evans are pushing for the Barry statue as a sop to the blacks, who are being pushed out of DC. The gentrification of DC means that a mayor like Barry can't be elected again.

If they are successful, that statue of Marion Barry will be the only black man left in town.

A few interesting facts about Marion Shepilov Barry:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marion_Barry

1.) He gave himself the middle name "Shepilov" after Dimitri Shepilov, a Soviet official.

2.) He had a masters degree in chemistry

3.) and this: "In response to the 1972 blaxploitation film Super Fly, Barry quickly formed a protest group named Blacks Against Narcotics and Genocide (BANG). Barry said the film was harmful to black youth, and that it glorified drug abuse. BANG called for a boycott of the film."

He certainly was an american original.

There are some Masters degree that can be thought of as terminal degrees. The best example is the MBA – the Master of Business Administration. If you want to learn enough business to go into business you get an MBA. Those who are not interested in going into business but want to stay in school and be an academic get a DBA.

But it’s different in many of the sciences. The only degree that means much is the PhD. The Masters is reserved for those who wash out of doctoral programs. A Masters in Chemistry is the degree of bottle washers not of chemists.

A masters degree is indeed a consolation prize if your original intention was to get a Ph.D. Some people however actually go to college with the intention of getting a masters and going no further. There are even degree programs expressly intended for people who only want a masters (I'm aware of such programs in physics, I don't know about chemistry). Some people want a masters degree merely as a credential, something to put on their resume. Actually, a lot of people just want a Ph.D. for the same reason - they have no intention of doing research.

Barry got his degree from Fisk, an HBCU, so it's not the same as if he had got a masters in chemistry from Harvard. My point in mentioning it was that it does indicate that he was smarter than the average black race-hustler. He was an Eagle Scout too. His background stands out among the kind of people who go into that racket.

Et in Arcadia ego: David Cassidy (1950 - 2017)

I’m very sad to hear about David Cassidy. There were times in the mid-1970s when he would come over to my house and we even started writing a song together. He was a very talented and nice person. Love & Mercy to David and his family. — Brian Wilson

Do you remember in the movie “The Battle of the Bulge” where the dirty Nazis put on American army uniforms and impersonated the good guys. Henry Fonda gets wise to them and has our guys ask suspected phony troops questions about baseball to establish the suspect’s bona fides.

I never saw one of his concerts and have never heard one of his songs – written with Marion Barry or not.

So if interrogated I would be hard pressed to prove I lived through the America that also held this David Cassidy person. Andy Warhol supposedly said that in the future everyone will be famous for fifteen minutes. That future is here now. Everyone is famous although just why they are famous is unclear – at least to me.

Will it be up in time for winter? -- to get a sprinkling of white powder.

I was born in Washington DC but I escaped to California after I got out of the army. Then I came back to go to grad school. The Washington I returned to was much different. For one thing, it had Marion Barry in it.

Washington was designed as a city run by Congress. All while I grew up a major political issue was “Home Rule”. The alternative to Home Rule was rule by the congressional representatives of suburban Virginia and Maryland.

Somewhere in this time period the appointed black leader was Walter Washington. He was black but not very popular with local blacks. He was commonly called an “Uncle Tom” – and there was some justice to that charge. He was there to represent the interests of white suburban Virginia and Maryland.

In that environment Barry became not just another politician, but a potential liberator. The blacks that one would meet on the street had all their hopes invested in Barry. When Barry’s feet of clay became obvious to everyone his popularity only grew. In black America there is a legendary trickster hero called Stagerlee. Stagerlee is naughty. He is mischievous. He is criminal. But mostly he is admired because he is always pulling tricks on whitey.

Barry became more and more a resistance symbol with each arrest.
