On Twitter, I’ve been discussing with somebody named Michael W. Story how a lot of the new Silicon Valley startups like Uber and AirBnB are based on the premise that regulations, especially, anti-discrimination laws, don’t apply to high tech firms. Not surprisingly, that gives them a distinct cost advantage over old tech businesses that assume they must operate under rule of law, which can translate into multi-billion dollar valuations.

I mentioned how little success Jesse Jackson has had over the years in Silicon Valley with his shakedowns that have worked well in other industries. He responded:

Michael W Story ‏@MWStory 20h
@Steve_Sailer So far they seem to be right! Do think the increasing difficulty of shakedowns is what is pushing things towards reparations?

I think he’s on to something. Over the last few years, as clever white people have figured out that they can profitably work diversity angles for themselves and their loved ones as long as they make sure to denounce the evil straight white pale male etc etc, blacks have been getting sent to the back of the Diversity Bus. They just aren’t as well-positioned and well-suited for the New Game dominated by traditional insiders like the daughters of rich men and gays.

So, blacks now want to change the rules of The Game to cash on the barrelhead based on heredity. My great-great-great-grandfather was a slave and my great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-grandfather was kidnapped from Africa like in Roots. Where’s my check?

In contrast, how is some gay guy going to claim that he comes from twelve generations of oppressed gays? Really? Is some UCLA MBA school woman professor going to claim she deserves a check because her grandmother had to run the Junior League? And is my old classmate Martin who is now the highest paid CEO who wears a dress going to be able to plausibly claim he/she comes from twelve generations of victimized transsexuals?

The answer is: Well, probably, yes, yes they will. But it will still take a few years for gays, feminists, and trans to set the stage to make it sound plausible why they have a blood inheritance right to checks of their own. In the meantime, blacks can cash in while their competition is discombobulated.

  1. I don’t think the glut of reparations stories popping up all of sudden has anything to do with the relatively convoluted racial politics of SF-SV. I think it’s nothing more than a combination of election year black turnout agitprop, get the elderly black women out to the ballot boxes dog whistling the civil rights Martin Luther King we shall overcome rhetoric, and also the fact that the Obama era has not brought about universal racial utopia, so they’re playing the World War R card out of pure angst and frustration.

  2. Another thing. The reason the Justice Brothers shakedown attempts don’t really work in SV is because SV can point to all the Asians they hire as commitment to diversity.

  3. “So, blacks now want to change the rules of The Game to cash on the barrelhead based on heredity. My great-great-great-grandfather was a slave and my great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-grandfather was kidnapped from Africa like in Roots. Where’s my check?”

You’re missing the clever part of TNC’s argument, Steve. Reparations for slavery is old hat. It’s been part of the conversation since 40 acres and a mule. TNC has given it an up to date spin by saying that its reparations for slavery plus Jim Crow plus redlining. See, that way still-living Blacks can talk about their bad loans, etc.

  4. Lot says:

Anti-discrimination laws also don’t apply, de facto, to small businesses, who are too small to be worth suing. Also, showing discrimination via statistics only works if you have a statistically significant sample.

Start-ups mostly are small businesses, even the successful ones. WhatsApp, despite being purchased for $19 billion, only had around 50 employees.

You also run into the problem that these companies employ a high percentage of Asian immigrants, so their white % is not high.

Finally, you need some victims to complain about discrimination. There are lots of blacks who can claim they were qualified for the fire department or factory work but were not hired. How many blacks with 5 years of ruby-on-rails experience do you think applied to work at Google last year and then were not hired?

  5. That video is hilarious and very accurate! I can’t imagine how quickly that money would be blown for reparations. Just think of all the bankrupt nba and nfl players!

  6. Another Canadian [AKA "Zinjanthropus"] says:

“Is some UCLA MBA school woman professor going to claim she deserves a check because her grandmother had to run the Junior League? And is my old classmate who is now one of the dozen highest paid CEOs in American going to be able to plausibly claim he comes from twelve generations of put-down transsexuals?

It just doesn’t matter. America is running on fumes. Soon all the old white guys that do the things that make civilization civilized will retire and people are starting to get wobbly-kneed about it. I hear “succession planning” all the time these days. Somebody needs to quickly figure out how to get a bunch of girls and Mexicans to refurbish our urban water systems, replace thousands of bridges and trestles, pave thousands of miles of roads that look like Saddam’s driveway and deal with the piss, shit and garbage from 100 million more diverse Americans. An iPhone app ain’t gonna do it. Government checks? It just doesn’t matter! It just doesn’t matter! It just doesn’t matter!

  7. You rely too heavily on sarcasm. I like you but I’m pretty sick of groaning through your essays.

  8. Folks, its just one article in The Atlantic. Its going nowhere.

Although the reaction to the article is in itself interesting.

  9. Silicon Valley careers require an engineering degree (or similar). Therefore, the industry gets the benefit of the IQ/racial filter, but can bypass any blame for racial disparities by pointing to the demographics of university STEM graduates. A game of Hot Potato.

  10. anony-mouse:”Folks, its just one article in The Atlantic. Its going nowhere.

Although the reaction to the article is in itself interesting.”

It’s quite cute how TNC hasn’t noticed the condescension that lurks behind the praise his essay is getting.

  11. I’m a straight white man, but I come from a very, very, very long line of oppressed women who weren’t allowed to lead a cavalry charge, run a business, or go to Harvard. And g–dammit, I want my check.

Reparations? I love the idea. I support it 1000%…no, 1000000%. I’m going to write every Democratic congressman and demand he support it. I’m going to write every open borders Republican politician and demand he support it. Then I’m going to sit back and watch as every last damn one of them outside of majority-minority districts loses their next election.

  12. “You also run into the problem that these companies employ a high percentage of Asian immigrants, so their white % is not high.”

Kinda wonder if that’s yet another reason for Silicon Valley businesses to want H-1B visas. It’s not just the cheap labor, or the large number of coders coming out of India. It’s the fact that it allows them to point at their large Asian populations as defense against discrimination suits.

  13. No, it’s not because of reparations (I very much doubt most blacks even know of the article) and no, it’s not because Asians “count” as minorities. Anyone who tried that line would get laughed out of court.

    Mostly:
    1) Blacks have largely disappeared from California, particularly the Bay Area. Not a lot of people to complain.
    2) Those saying that Google has a hot potato defense are correct. Not a lot of blacks with engineering degrees.
    3) Companies outsource services–custodial, food, even some low level technical things. All of these areas, in earlier days, provided some way for promising URMs to go from, say, supervisor of operations to programmer trainee. Manager of building services to HR rep. And so on. All of these paths have been removed.
    4) Not only have the paths been removed, but because they’ve been removed, the companies that provide the services aren’t held to any real standards because they are unsexy companies that don’t get press. So no one observes that many of the service providers are openly discriminating against non-Hispanics or non-Asians.

As I wrote recently, most of the small business franchises and the like are utterly dominated by immigrants, who use immigrant communities to get cheap money, reciprocate by hiring only from their community, and of course openly discriminate against anyone not their kind. Particularly blacks.

    https://educationrealist.wordpress.com/2014/04/24/just-a-job/

So it’s not just that Google’s not hiring black engineers. But Google’s not hiring black custodians and mail workers and cooks, because Google outsources. The outsourcers are openly discriminating against blacks, but no one cares.

  14. I think Countenance is on the right track that this is about turnout for this year’s elections. Although I’ll go him one better and predict that some factions of the Democratic Party will come out and endorse reparations this year, maybe closer to fall, to really get the turnout juiced up.

  15. Steve, you’re making the mistake of assuming things are going to continue in perpetuity. We are on the downward slope now and reparations is something rich coastal elites can navel gaze about while they ignore Rone burning around them.

In other words this is just more of the same, as with WWG/T, make believe privilege sessions and all the other moral jerking off that goes on: Marxist critique sessions to try and ignore the fact that something is fundamentally broken in our society.

It says a lot for the 60s American you pine for Steve that even with so much of the web wrecked things are continuing on inertia and only now starting to break down at the edges. The above poster is right: another queer face nerd designing a newer gay electronic toy isn’t going to save us from what’s coming.

  16. Perhaps some blacks have started to realize that, inreasingly, a lot of whites have just grown tired of blacks and thier endless problems, have grown tired of thier spokesmen, and just want nothing to do with them anymore. Perhaps those black race-men have decided it’s time for one last score before their social capital has all been used up.

That outsourcing gig is interesting. I work for a giant green and yellow manufacturing company that has all the requisite diversity policies, yet hires all its programmers from a “local” H1-B Bangalore Body Shop. Crazy stuff. My company pimps diversity, yet somehow can only find its programmers in India. Since they aren’t “employees” of my company it isn’t a “diversity” issue. And since it is a “local” Hindu that rents them to my employer, my employer can also kvell about being “committed to the local economy”.

I still think it makes more sense for black Africans to demand reparations for not being taken.
They’d be a lot better off under whites.

It’s like South Africa. We hear so much about how Apartheid had denied equality to blacks, but it was because whites were given special powers and protection that the South African economy was allowed to grow and develop to first world status.
If not for Apartheid, South Africa would have been another Zaire.

From a genetic standpoint, this will be very, very difficult to prove. And the same genetic science that “could” be somehow used to attempt by the G group to “prove” generations of oppression could also be used to demonstrate that yes, race not only exists, but that there is a biological basis for IQ and other such unpleasantries that Nicholas Wade’s book is currently going through in various critiques and reviews.

In theory, the G group could be more successful in getting a check doled out to them much, much sooner than ever would the feminists. As Steve has remarked before, there’s too much fraternizing with the enemy.

Or will they decide to take what’s behind the curtain?

  21. If someone did the number crunching, I’d be willing to bet that a fair and honest Reparations program would probably not turn out to be in the best interests of American blacks. (In fairness, I do not for a minute believe that any such program would be fair or honest).

Say you calculate the total amount thus: take the average annual wages of a typical American free laborer for each year in which slavery was legal, multiplied by the number of working-age slaves in America during that year. Then, subtract the average cost of feeding, clothing and housing a slave during each year, multiplied by the total number of living slaves in America (bear in mind that elderly slaves and children have to be fed and clothed, too, but are limited in how much work they can do). That will give you the annual “deficit” owed to the slave population- the approximate amount of money they would have been able to make as free laborers (of course, freeing all those slaves would have obviously affected wages, but I personally have no idea if the effect would have been up or down). Then, add up the deficit for all the years in which slavery was legal (it might make calculations easier to do this decade-by-decade, rather than by year). The total represents the amount of money that descendants of American slaves are “owed” in Reparations…. but that’s before we start making important deductions.

Remember, in endorsing Reparations, we’ve implicitly endorsed the principle of collective racial financial debt- that modern white Americans, who may or may not have had any slaveholding ancestors, owe a debt for the wages which the ancestors of today’s blacks were not paid for their labor. If the whole race owes payment for the debts incurred by its members, then how about deducting all that money that has gone from disproportionately white taxpayers to disproportionately black recipients of welfare and other entitlement programs? How about deducting the costs of imprisoning disproportionately black prisoners, and processing their crimes through the court system? Moreover, isn’t it fair to deduct from the total Reparations payment due to each individual the difference in overall average wealth between African-Americans and West Africans, since slavery (completely inadvertently) contributed to that increased living standard? By the time we get done with all of these deductions, I’m not sure that Reparations won’t come in the form of a bill rather than a check.

Frankly, I am not to keen on the whole “collective racial guilt” thing no matter which way the numbers work out. But that’s the old-fashioned liberal in me.

You’re forgetting about sperm and egg donors, surrogate mothers and adoptions. They are changing the face of diversity and affirmative action here in New York, at least judging by the expensive private schools attended by my son and my friends’ children. A large percentage of the students receiving preferential admission on “diversity” grounds are children of (white, rich) gays, lesbians and voluntary single straight parents who have used one or more of those methods to assemble their families. So now it is quite possible to be the gay son of a gay father and ultimately the gay grandson in a line of gay men. Or much more likely the gay or lesbian grandchild in a line of lesbians: my personal observation is that gay fathers usually very much want their children to be straight, while lesbian mothers often strongly prefer them to be gay and lesbian — and the lesbians’ children disproportionately turn out as their mothers wished.

By the way, a large proportion of the “black” kids in my son’s school are the black children of white adoptive parents and the mixed race children of white parents who used black sperm and egg donors. And most of the rest are mixed race children of black/white or mulatto/white male-female couples. Happy indeed is the black child of a single gay father, at least when it comes to getting into exclusive schools! I will be curious to see whether this preferential treatment continues through Harvard and Yale or whether it ends at the prep school level.
