Should Google Program Self-Driving Cars to Run Over White Men to Spare Black Women?

As I mentioned before, in my new Taki’s Magazine column, “The Trillion-Dollar Question,” I point out that Google’s decision to fire James Damore due to hurt feelings raises some questions about how confident you would feel entrusting your life to Google’s long-promised self-driving car.

I was thinking about the extremely high level of objective competence needed to increase the passengers’ safety. Keeping passengers’ bodies from getting hurt may well require that Google diversity employees’ feelings sometimes get hurt. Conversely, keeping diversity employees’ feelings from getting hurt may well require that passengers’ bodies sometimes get hurt.

But several readers have raised the question of what choices a self-driving car will be programmed to do in a no-win situation.

Interestingly, philosophers and psychologists have long conducted “trolley” thought experiments about what choices would be made when somebody must be run over and the only question is who. In fact, I wrote about a study of political ideology and trolley deaths for Taki’s Mag in 2013:

Killing Chip to Save Tyrone
by Steve Sailer
November 06, 2013

If a runaway trolley were about to smash into a bus containing 100 trapped members of the Harlem Jazz Orchestra, would you push a wholly innocent man named Chip Ellsworth III onto the tracks to stop the accident? What if the bus held 100 members of the New York Philharmonic and the guilt-free man’s name was Tyrone Payton?

Would your politics have any relevance to whether you’d prefer to kill the white man to save the black musicians or to kill the black man to save the white musicians?

In a fascinating 2009 academic paper by four social psychologists, The motivated use of moral principles, UC Irvine students who identified as politically conservative were found to be racially evenhanded. When given the scenario about killing Chip to save 100 Harlemites, conservatives were no more or less likely to agree it’s the right thing to do than when told to ponder killing the man with the cornerback’s name to save 100 classical musicians.

In striking contrast, liberal students displayed greater bloodthirstiness when presented with the scenario that gave them an opportunity to kill the WASP to help the blacks. This liberal desire to shove a white man to his death to salvage blacks rather than a black man to salvage whites was extremely statistically significant (p = .002).

Read the whole thing there.

Something is Broken in the UK Intellectual Sphere.
The BBC did some kind of educational cartoon on Roman Britain and represented “diversity” in terms of someone looking African in the show as representative of “diversity” at the time. The BBC was effectively applying quotas retroactively (I mean, really retroactively). Any dissent from the statistical errors made by the politically correct police is treated as apostasy. Effectively, scholarship is dead in the U.K.

    1. Facial recognition and other bio-identification software determines the identities of each of the humans at risk in a crash and then determines the answers to a series of questions in order to determine the ‘life-value’ of each human.

All these complaints about “belittling” or “microaggressions” or whatever are so ridiculous. I am a male software developer and like everyone else I have been “belittled” countless times by men, women and members of any demographic group you can think of.

I’m sure if I decided to get really offended by trivia and started keeping a diary of “belittling” at work it would reveal I’m in some way “belittled” on a daily or near-daily basis by both my male and female coworkers.

In fact, any person who has ever had to work with other people has been “belittled” plenty of times, and just as often been the “belittler” themselves, sometimes deliberately, sometimes inadvertently, and other times deliberately-but-subconsciously. That’s just what people do.

Moreover that goes double for nerds, who are shaky on social niceties and face the overwhelming desire to prove they’re the smartest in the room. You will never see such “belittling,” such tempers, as in the famous “nerd fight.” Look at how much “belittling” goes on in Russian-novel-length arguments over completely trivial BS that even I find boring. And make no mistake, this is all men arguing with men, or 99% anyway and 0.6% ex-men.

(Women in tech exist but generally aren’t quite that ‘spergy).

So what these types imagine as their Horrible Oppression is actually the universal human experience. Men are taught to have a thick skin and move on with your day. Women, too, used to learn to act this way.

And the reason for this eminently-sensible past-and-present teaching is that while it’s true your ape-brain gets a pharmaceutical-grade endorphin rush from keeping a running tally of “belittlings” past and present, those who maintain this obsession are guaranteed to turn out insufferable to everyone else, and ultimately to become neurotic and depressed in their own right.

Amazing that they haven’t made more headway. I can only think the reason is political and not technical. At about the same time, in Boston, people who worked on the MBTA were retiring in their early 40s with a full pension.

Back 40, 50 years ago, if you saw a pregnant negro female, pushing a baby carriage, with a couple of toddlers in a crosswalk; you'd mention to your passenger that was bonus points galore...triple or quadruple even.

Read about 20 years ago, some SJW's were about to stroke out when they found out about this game...nobody ever acted on it, it was just a comment on how much they didn't want their taxes to support another generation of welfare needing negros.

I have always assumed the points meme was originated/spread by https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_Race_2000

Does anyone know if that is actually true?

  45. This post is ridiculous.

I don’t fear any political craziness at this level in self-driving cars or in most Google AI. Sure, the image search of American scientists is ridiculous, but even that may be bias outside of Google, rather than bias added by Google.

The other torrent of posts in the past day are otherwise great.

We get it that you rode trains in the Docklands but you didn’t answer the question: Is it the unions?

Thought experiments like this don’t really work because they don’t tell you anything useful. You can ask people what they would do in a given situation and I’m sure their answers are worth pondering on in a dry lecture theatre far away from trolleys and people, until all the philosophical juice is extracted. But in real life? Most people would do nothing, certainly the sensible ones. Because if you do something, and cause somebody’s death by doing that something, you are up on a murder charge and will probably be found guilty. On the other hand, if you do nothing, any deaths that may occur are not your fault.

Steve: Your Taki article is among the best you wrote. No one before remarked the absurdity of Google firing that memo-writer for defending Google against governmental Mau Mau. In the times of the Inquisition one could confess, recant, and be saved. Not now.

I think Recanting still kind of works. I mean there are ever increasing things to recant about (the Inq too started out looking for secret sabbath observers and moved on to looking for people who wore a nice shirt on friday).

Look at Summers and allnsorts of other recanters. If you made it to an auto de fe in Spain and were considered a heretic you had a chance to recant and be garroted before you were burned. If you were only of questionable heresy and you recanted you got to be a galley slave (see ben hur) for 10 years.

Regimes WANT public penitents. They will still suffer but their penance is of great propaganda value.

I’m kust being technical. I’m looking for hire as a modern kremlinologist.

I'd better click on more ads from Google now to build up a stockpile of dispensations for when the time comes for Google Cars.

I absolutely loved watching that little video. The maleness of little boys is totally awesome. Play fighting with little boys as the best. Once they turn 14 however you notice there are way too many of them. And it kind of stays that way for the next 60 years.

Watching that I could totally relate to the little boy. Not on account of the feelings I have now which, have sadly been tempered by the morality of the current year as well as the law enforcement of the current continent, but as a kid, before I was tainted I would totally and absolutely do what that kid did. Nothing is better than destruction. Choosing to destroy and destroying.

Man, to be a guilt-free and law-absolvant child again!

Idea! If I go full retard - heck I'm halfway there - I can get away with anything no? ( Note to self: check with an attorney.l

Your comment and this thread reminds me of how much fun my brother and I had crashing out Tonka trucks into each other! We took some serious joy in the destruction.

Confederate Flag Day, State Capitol, Raleigh, N.C. -- March 3, 2007
The major media overlooked Communist spies and Madoff’s fraud. What are they missing today?
Are elite university admissions based on meritocracy and diversity as claimed?
The “war hero” candidate buried information about POWs left behind in Vietnam.
The evidence is clear — but often ignored
