From the Des Moines Register:

Meet Carson King, the ‘Iowa Legend’ who’s raised more than $1 million for charity off of a sign asking for beer money

Aaron Calvin, Des Moines Register Published 9:33 p.m. CT Sept. 24, 2019 | Updated 10:17 p.m. CT Sept. 24, 2019

Meet Carson King, Iowa’s viral ‘legend’ who’s raised over $1 million for charity from a sign requesting beer money.

In the living room of Carson King’s unassuming bungalow in Altoona, a sign hand-painted by his step-grandmother hangs on the wall with the message “King: Start unknown, finish unforgettable.”

A message made to remind her 24-year-old grandson to always to do his best has now become a prophecy. Before September’s annual Cy-Hawk football game, King was unknown to the world, working security at Prairie Meadows Casino and trying to figure out what to do with his life.

But after he held up a sign asking for beer money that appeared by chance on ESPN’s “College GameDay” show before the game, he’s been lauded as an example of kindness and compassion across the nation. The sign brought in more than $1 million after he decided to donate all of the funds raised from his brief television appearance to the University of Iowa’s Stead Children’s Hospital.

But from KCCI News later today:

Anheuser-Busch to have ‘no further association’ with Carson King over social media posts

Updated: 10:23 PM CDT Sep 24, 2019, Laura Terrell, Anchor/Reporter

DES MOINES, Iowa — Anheuser-Busch announced Tuesday that it will cut ties with Carson King, the Iowa State fan who has raised over $1 million for the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital, over multiple offensive social media posts he made.

King held a press conference Tuesday to discuss a controversial post. He said a reporter with the Des Moines Register called attention to an offensive social media post he made when he was 16 years old.

“Eight years ago, when I was a sophomore in high school, I made some social media posts with my friends that quoted and referenced the show ‘Tosh.0,’ King said. “One of those posts was brought to my attention by a member of the media today.”

King said in an additional statement to KCCI, “The Des Moines Register has been nothing but kind in all of their coverage, and I appreciate the reporter pointing out the post to me. I want everyone to understand that this was my decision to publicly address the posts and apologize. I believe that is the right thing to do.”

In a statement to KCCI, Anheuser-Busch said, “Carson King had multiple social media posts that do not align with our values as a brand or as a company and we will have no further association with him.” …

Your notional corporate player trying to impress the nubile marketing assistant reminds me of the scene in "Le placard" where meathead manager Gerard Depardieu is telegraphing his new respect for gayness to the assembled coworkers and unironically imitates the scolding tone of the company's exec from earlier in the film (trans., w/ wagging finger, "That kind of humor is out now!") The Babbitt types in charge at these b.s. firms that add no value to our society don't give a crap about innovation or doubling-down on game-changing or other big-brain CATO ideology, yet are highly sensitive to the currents and trends in modern manners. This was already demonstrated decades ago with the neverending merchandising bonanza for Feminism, a proven box-office winner with an A+ CinemaScore and legs.

There actually were a small number of people who fit this criteria. They were the offspring of French colonial troops from Senegal, who impregnated German women during the French occupation of the Rhineland (which lasted until 1934, as I recall.)

There are no high school students who are aware of that, however. So I feel confident he was joking about something else. Something presumably non-existent.

Emmett Till cousin on inquiry: ‘What is the holdup?’

    September 25, 2019

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — The government is still investigating the brutal slaying of Emmett Till, a black teenager whose death helped spur the civil rights movement more than 60 years ago. A Justice Department report issued to Congress about civil rights cold case investigations lists the 1955 slaying of 14-year-old Emmett Till as being among the unit’s active cases, The Associated Press was the first to report Tuesday.

Till, who was from Chicago, was abducted and beaten to death hours after he whistled at a white woman while visiting Mississippi. His body was found in a river days later. The investigation, closed in 2007, was reopened after a book published two years ago indicated a key witness had lied.

Look this up on Google. It’s a lead story in nearly every national and local news outlet today. Albany, NY for example:

Every time the name of Emmett Till is invoked I am reminded of Ann Coulter's lampooning of Jeremiah Wright,

In his speech to the National Press Club on Monday, for example, Wright described America as a country of "segregation, Jim Crow, lynching and the separate-but-equal fantasy."

Then he ran outside to feed more quarters into the meter where his time machine was parked.

STOP PRESS you racists! Breaking EMMETT TILL news!

Emmett Till cousin on inquiry: 'What is the holdup?'

    September 25, 2019

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — The government is still investigating the brutal slaying of Emmett Till, a black teenager whose death helped spur the civil rights movement more than 60 years ago. A Justice Department report issued to Congress about civil rights cold case investigations lists the 1955 slaying of 14-year-old Emmett Till as being among the unit's active cases, The Associated Press was the first to report Tuesday.

Till, who was from Chicago, was abducted and beaten to death hours after he whistled at a white woman while visiting Mississippi. His body was found in a river days later. The investigation, closed in 2007, was reopened after a book published two years ago indicated a key witness had lied.

Look this up on Google. It's a lead story in nearly every national and local news outlet today. Albany, NY for example:

    https://cbs6albany.com › news › nation-world › emmett-till-cousin-on-inq...
7 hours ago - BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — The government is still investigating the brutal slaying of Emmett Till, a black teenager whose death helped spur the civil rights movement more than 60 years ago.

Every time the name of Emmett Till is invoked I am reminded of Ann Coulter’s lampooning of Jeremiah Wright,

In his speech to the National Press Club on Monday, for example, Wright described America as a country of “segregation, Jim Crow, lynching and the separate-but-equal fantasy.”

Then he ran outside to feed more quarters into the meter where his time machine was parked.

  51. anon[203] • Disclaimer says:

“Why won’t conservatives and/or people who disagree with this cut ties with Anheuser-Busch?”

Those same conservatives allowed Europe’s Inbev to buy Anheuser-Busch back in the 2000s, IIRC, so I don’t expect them to put up a fight here when they didn’t before. Like I said, Anheuser-Busch is not an American company anymore. Your boycott threat will go nowhere because you foolishly allowed executives in the old company to cash out and sell to deep-pocketed corporatists who don’t care what you think and have the finances to weather any kind of conceivable backlash. Remember when Anheuser-Busch ran patriotic ads after 9/11? Funny how them no longer doing that coincided with being bought out by non-Americans. Not everything in life has to be about shareprice … but it does if your moral foundation derives from a religious devotion to an abstruse economic dogma.

  52. @istevefan

Anheuser-Busch announced Tuesday that it will cut ties with Carson King,

Why won't conservatives and/or people who disagree with this cut ties with Anheuser-Busch? If you are a beer drinker, just switch beer brands. Stop buying A-B products.

Our side has so much economic power, and yet we never use it. So long as we won't fight, we are guaranteed to keep on losing.

If you are a beer drinker, just switch beer brands. Stop buying A-B products.

Did that years ago, because Bud is crap. Made my own at home. Then I mostly quit drinking beer except for one or two crafties with a friend.

    What should I do now?

  53. anon[181] • Disclaimer says:

“Was waiting for this response, as predictable as the “true Communism has never been tried!” wails of the far left.”

Totally agree. No matter what happens, these people will double down and excuse their oppression with ridiculous theoretical abstractions. “It’s all the Fed’s fault. We don’t have true capitalism.” (translation: let me divert attention away from my dogma’s failure by placing the blame elsewhere). “If only we had gotten Trotsky, we could have gotten true communism.” (translation: let me divert attention …). Someone not blindly devoted to economic dogma might ask if perhaps what we are seeing is just the inevitable end-state of any kind of unregulated market capitalism. Human nature conquers utopian theory every time.

In communist countries, you almost inevitably get a monopolization of power and resources by a few – usually or eventually incompetent. Why? Because it’s human nature to be selfish and greedy. Same with unrestrained market-capitalism. Corporations remove their competition through mergers and political corruption and threats to their bottom line by deplatforming and unpersoning because they are run by people who desire accumulation of resources above all else; civic virtue is a distant 8th or 9th concern below share price and debt rating, among other things. The end result is an inefficient accumulation/allocation of resources, and power, into the hands of a few who could easily abuse it (and inevitably do) for their own ends. The creation of the Federal Reserve didn’t do that. This outcome is fundamental to the laissez-faire market-capitalist ideology (theology?).

Whenever you have a devotion to unregulated markets of any kind, you get a concentration of power, which increases the chances that it could be abused. Inefficiency follows and oppression follows that as the greedy few seek to maintain their hold on power and resources. Same with communism. China has somewhat avoided this fate because enough power is decentralized throughout the CCP that efficient policies can be adopted. Asians are also naturally intelligent and orderly, unlike Europeans who embrace magical thinking, so that also helps.

Honestly, it’s hard to feel sorry for “true conservatives” when they dug the hole they are now stuck in and refuse to climb out of. Whenever some abuse happens, you can bet the usual suspects will show up and excuse it.

  54. I tried (albeit cursorily) to find the actual text of Mr. King’s offending tweets. No luck; none of the newspaper articles quoted them.

This is a bit unsettling — and typical. The commissars instruct us to be outraged. Trust us, the tweets are racist and offensive and inhuman. We are not alllowed to decide for ourselves, lest we be irreparably harmed from casting our eyes upon such words, or, worse yet, lest we be motivated to question authority prior to joining the lynch mob.

  55. In the US criminal convictions of a 16 year old are sealed and cannot be discussed by anyone for any reason ever. It’s really too bad this guy wasn’t convicted of a juvenile hate crime. He would be clear instead of humiliated. A 16 year old who steals a car, runs over a pedestrian, robs a 7/11 could be working at AB or that newspaper tomorrow.

This movie couldn’t be made now, but in 1994 Depardieu and 15-in-real-life Katherine Heigl played a father and daughter who were pretending to be lovers in order to make a boy that Heigl liked jealous.

Now, the thought of a 15 year old having a sugar daddy would bring out the torches and pitchforks.

Yes, but is the government still investigating the rape and murder of a white woman committed by Emmett's father in World War II?

Stay tuned... film at eleven??? NOT!!!

Actually, Emmett’s father, Louis, was convicted of raping two white women, and murdering one of them. God only knows how many women he actually raped and/or murdered before and during The War. His ex-wife (Emmett’s mother) referred to Louis as “a lady’s man.” How can a serial rapist and murderer be so described, you ask?

There actually were a small number of people who fit this criteria. They were the offspring of French colonial troops from Senegal, who impregnated German women during the French occupation of the Rhineland (which lasted until 1934, as I recall.)
