From Variety:

ABC is in development on a follow up to the drama series “Revenge,” Variety has confirmed.

The new project hails from “Revenge” creator Mike Kelley and original series writer Joe Fazzio. It is said to follow a young Latinx immigrant who is guided by an original series character as she arrives in Malibu to exact revenge on a Sackler-esque pharmaceutical dynasty, whose insatiable greed lead to the murder of her biochemist mother, the destruction of her family, and a global epidemic.

I’m assuming that the “Sackler*-esque” dynasty will be WASPs on the show……

Seeing as how Anglo-Whites are the group that have really been hit hard by the opioid epidemic**, shouldn’t the revenge-minded protagonist be a member of that demographic? Perhaps from, say, West Virginia…..

The Sackler family are descendants of Isaac Sackler and his wife Sophie (née Greenberg), Jewish immigrants to the United States from Galicia (now Ukraine) and Poland,[4] who established a grocery business in Brooklyn. The couple had three sons, Arthur, Mortimer, and Raymond Sackler who all went to medical school and became psychiatrists. They were often cited as early pioneers in medication techniques which ended the common practice of lobotomies, and were also regarded as the first to fight for the racial integration of blood banks.[5] In 1952, the brothers bought a small pharmaceutical company, Purdue Frederick. Raymond and Mortimer ran Purdue, while Arthur, the oldest brother, became a pioneer in medical advertising and one of the foremost art collectors of his generation. He also gifted the majority of his collections to museums around the world. After his death in 1987, his option on one third of that company was sold by his estate to his two brothers who turned it into Purdue Pharma.[6]

With opioid deaths disproportionately high among whites (80% of opioid overdose deaths in 2017), drug addiction and overdose risks are no longer problems just for poor minorities. Perhaps, not coincidentally, the approach to addressing the problem has changed.

There is only so much bad governance people can take.

People saw a massive tax cut for the wealthy, tax increases for moderately upper middle class in the North East. And all Republicans had to offer was cutting social services in the face of ballooning healthcare costs and maybe immigration..

Negotiations are in the works to have Harvey Weinstein and Barbara Streisand play the patriarch and matriarch of the clan. Preliminary title: “The Goldbergs Must Die”.

The only counterexample I can think of was, back in the 90s, they actually made Magneto, the leader of the evil mutants fighting the X-Men, a (Jewish) Holocaust survivor (he had been a Sinte Gypsy before that). The mutants have superpowers, and Magneto figures the humans are eventually going to try to exterminate them because…you know.

But that was, you know, a comic book.

  27. @Redneck farmer

You’re imagining disloyal rapacious bakers, brokers, lawyers, and very-high income people, and they were hit by the deduction limit for sure. And good.

But you’re actually also talking about my mother and her friends, and she doesn’t in any way draft plans for the super-rich. She worked and saved and lived frugally her whole life, a patriotic Christian who raised children, volunteered in our town, and bought nothing much for herself ever.

Now that she is in her old age and struggling to hold on to the house where my father had lived with her so long before his death, in very-high property tax New Jersey, genius trump and the republicans increase her fucking fed income tax.

Yeah, that’s the way to hit the fat cats and drain the swamp.

Get out and learn who is hurt by the sudden extreme limitation on state/local tax deduction.

The limitation is an excellent and overdue idea, but obviously should have been effected much more gradually. People like my mother had inadequate time to make a decision, get money together for renovation or repairs if needed before sale, and actually sell and move before the change took effect.

Also, $10 k limit is absurd. Regular decidedly non-elite people, and many many republican voters, pay that more than that in prop tax OR income tax, not both.

A $20,000 deduction limit, phased in over several years, would have done the job without screwing people like my mother. She will be happy to learn, though, that she is carrying water for the elite that hates her, her children, and her grandchildren, and our values.

Nice touch, too, making the corporate tax cut permanent but the individual and family tax cut TEMPORARY. That’s bad policy and bad politics to boot.

Just a couple of minor character changes (make the Latinx woman into a rural white man, make the pharma family explicitly Jewish) and this show would be denounced as Nazi propaganda and no network would touch it with a 10 foot pole. But you can be sure that the actual version will be fine and not Antisemitic at all. Small tweaks can make a big difference.

Feter and Tante don’t typically go together. It would be Feter and Mumeh or Mimeh, depending on Lite or Galitzyaner/Poylish pronounciation. Unkel and Tante typically go together in the more Western dialects of Yiddish that were more indebted to German, or as the noted Yiddishist Max Weinreich scornfully called them, Daytchmerish.

Don’t go by Weinreich. He was very snotty about such things (or reverse snotty because he always preferred the REAL Yiddish word to the German word). Actual Yiddish speakers were very casual with Yiddish and didn’t hesitate to mix in other (usually the local) languages whenever it suited them, sometimes even when there was a perfectly good Yiddish word.

I think as a practical matter, Mume/Tante were used more or less interchangeably – everyone knew both words. English only has one word for aunt but there are tons of things where we have more than one word for the same thing. Maybe Tante was a little more (faux) tony like in English saying ont instead of ant.

  49. @Jack D

True, Weinreich was a Yiddish snob of sorts. As you no doubt know, there was a great polemical battle as to the status of Yiddish as an authentic language or only a “Dzargon “,lowly dialect. Max was very solidly in the “language” camp, thus he minimized any debt to German as much as possible. Weinreich himself was from Courland, a heavily Germanized section of Latvia , so there may have been an element of rebellion in his disdain for daytchmerish as well.
When I was a teenager and read some of the bitter polemical broadsides that these two camps used to level at each other, I used to marvel at how much literary horsepower was expended on what seemed to me to have all the valence of a “tastes great/less filling” debate. When I got older, I realized that these were identity issues, which always evoke strong emotions.

I would still maintain that although both feter and unkel and mumeh and tante were known to all , those who called uncle, feter, called aunt, mumeh and seldom tante. There were of course exceptions, e.g. if aunt herself was Western etc. but I think the rule was as I stated.

I think identity issues evoke strong emotions mainly in people who are insecure about them. If you are secure in your identity you can sprinkle your Yiddish with German and you will still be a Jew.

Speaking of daytchmerish, in pre-WWI Galicia my grandfather attended a school funded by Baron de Hirsch in which he was taught to read and write Yiddish in the Roman alphabet. {From the wiki – “On the occasion of the fortieth anniversary of Emperor Francis Joseph’s accession to the Austrian throne [1888], de Hirsch gave £500,000 for the establishment of primary and technical schools in Galicia and the Bukowina”}. I still have some of his letters to my mother, written much later (in the 1950s). I think the plan probably was to get the Jews of Galicia to gradually switch over to German as the Jews of Prague already had. But the war ended that.

  53. I think identity issues evoke strong emotions mainly in people who are insecure about them. If you are secure in your identity you can sprinkle your Yiddish with German and you will still be a Jew.

Indeed so, but those were times of great ferment when forging a secular Jewish identity was up in the air with claims being made for Yiddish ,Hebrew, Zionism , Bundism etc. etc. Insecurity was kind of the order of the day.

Re Yiddish in Roman alphabet, do you know what transliteration system they used? I’m assuming not the currently dominant YIVO scheme. My late father told me he remembers Professor Mordkhe Schaecter of Columbia marching in front of the Arbeyter Ring building, with several like minded fanatics, protesting the non-standard transliteration in the Forverts “eyns, tzvey, drei, fir” “Ah neie ortographye villen mir “. I think he got his way at the end too.

When I lived in NY I knew his daughters Rukhl and Gitl slightly. I guess someone has to be a professional Yiddishist but it was not for me – I just don’t care deeply enough whether you spell 2 as tzvey or zwei.

I haven’t seen those letters for years, although I may still have them in a box somewhere. But if I recall, the Romanization leaned toward the German and reflected Galician Yiddish – significantly different than the Litvak YIVO scheme. I’m sure someone somewhere has written a dissertation on the de Hirsch schools and the curriculum that was taught there.

I don’t think my grandfather went beyond the primary level but they also set up trade schools (and de Hirsch also sponsored efforts to get Jews involved in agriculture). I think de Hirsch was sort of the European equivalent of a George Washington Carver “Pull Yourself Up by your Bootstraps” kind of guy (crossed with a Rockefeller – he was very wealthy).

I am guessing that they didn’t have any great intellectual debates about their Romanization system – they were just trying to implement something practical to improve the skills of the impoverished shtetl Jews and bring them a step closer to integrating them into the modern economy.
