Boy Scouts of America Dropping the Word ‘Boy’ as Girls Are Welcomed Into Program

BY DAVE QUINN•@NINEDAVESPOSTED ON MAY 2, 2018 AT 1:16PM EDT

… But not everyone is happy with the Boy Scouts of America’s new direction.

The Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. previously encouraged the Boy Scouts of America not to recruit girls. “Our experiences are created for and with girls,” Andrea Bastiani Archibald, the Girl Scouts’ Chief Girl and Family Engagement Officer, told USA Today. “I think that’s important when we consider what appeals to them and what benefits them most.”

Currently, The Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. does not allow boys into their programs.

The answer to Cult Marxism is Cult Benedictism. Check out the Troops of Saint George.

The Troops of Saint George (www.troopsofsaintgeorge.org) is a Catholic father and son group. It holds troop meetings working on spiritual, physical, patriotic, family and manly skills. There are campouts available monthly as an opportunity to spend quality time with your son and the other families in the troop. If you are looking for a brotherhood of fathers and sons in which to learn, live, teach and experience the Catholic faith in all its fullness, while enjoying the outdoors come join us! We look forward to praying the rosary around the campfire with you. Catholic author and Professor Dr. Taylor Marshall founded the Troops of Saint George (TSG) in 2013. It is the only apostolate of its kind for fathers and sons with a mission to create Catholic gentlemen and teach and exercise heroic virtue.

  3. Randal says:

And here’s an off topic but broadly “battle of the sexes” related story.

Why women (and the kinds of men who pander to them) should never be in positions of authority over men, and certainly not in predominantly male activity areas:

Lifeboatman with 15 years’ service is one of two sacked after their ‘jokey’ tea mugs showing naked women were branded a ‘safeguarding risk’ in case visiting school children saw them

Trainee Joe Winspear, 26 and crewman Ben Laws were dismissed by phone
Whitby RNLI volunteers let go after female boss found their Secret Santa mugs
One mug had Mr Winspear’s face on it superimposed on a naked woman’s body
Four other members of staff have allegedly quit in protest over the mug row

It looks as though there is a lurking social media matter behind this as well, or at any rate the RNLI want us to think there is, as witnessed by vague references to “going through their Whatzapp messages” in the disciplinary hearing, and the following comment on the DM story: “I am a governor member of the RNLI. I am because I go to sea in small ships and rely on this volunteer service to keep me safe. After reading this article I rang the RNLI head office to voice my concern. All I am going to say is that there is more to this than what the Daily Mail are reporting. Please keep on donating . Remember , the RNLI would not exist if it wasn’t for your donations. There are brave men and women throughout the UK and the Irish republic who need your support.”

However the problem was still clearly caused by a female in a position of authority over-reacting to something that should be of no concern, and the institutional hierarchy taking her nonsense seriously rather than laughing at her and telling her to go away and find something useful to do, as they ought to have done.

Yes, Randal, but I've seen that lots of this has nothing to do with sex or race or anything more than corporate weenies' response to the atmosphere of ZERO! TOLERANCE!

These days, in the corporate world, you are much better off to bring down the big discipline, or fire someone, for any little thing, than to blow it off, and give just a small "word to the wise" to the employee. It could go like "Listen, man, you're one of our best guys, but this kind of thing is going to piss off some HR bitch at some point. Please, for your own good, don't do it anymore ... but, it was hilarious, and I'm gonna tell this story to my buddies!" However, that's only if the boss has got some guts. Most of them in Big Biz do not have that kind of guts and sensibility. It's ZERO TOLERANCE and MAXIMUM STUPIDITY all the way down.

BTW, an incident I was involved it like this (yes, as the culprit) did not involve sexual relations, un-PC talk, or any of that. It was a man in this case who got me in big trouble for a joke ... well I used that term "man" just for readability. He was a standard corporate weenie. Yes, he's been promoted.
    , @Anonymous
The issue of why are Ivy league butt-kissers running the modern world so negligently and effetely is not commonly the concern of our meritocratic pundits and doctors-of-journalism, for some reason.

After another 10 years of this old episodes of "The Office" and "Veep" will be considered young-professional lifestyle dramas instead of satires.

Men who use anecdotes to justify discrimination should never be in positions of authority over women, whether it is in a predominantly male or female "activity area."

  4. Why don’t boys and girls forgo the Scouts and participate in 4-H?

You might think it is a hayseed version of the Scouts, but it has always welcomed both boys and girls while not being embarrassed by traditional gender interests. Instead of make-work Merit Badges, 4-H involves children in activites marking the passage into the adult world such as raising a calf, planting a crop, baking a cake, sewing a dress, or rebuilding an engine.

Dare I suggest that a Citizenship project in 4-H could involve participating in the “conversation” with iSteve? https://4h.extension.illinois.edu/members/projects

Not a bad idea, though ag now encompasses so few people in New York that the people in my office whose kids were enrolled said they were doing environmental clean up work.
    , @Marty T
There certainly is an opportunity for a "conservative" option if 4-H counts. I can't imagine this won't kill the scouts. They look like a laughing stock. No kid wants to be a laughing stock.
    , @Rod1963
4-H would be a good alternative since you get to learn some useful, practical skills. I know at least in the more rural regions the 4-H is pretty intact. Can't say much for what's happening in the urban schools.

The way the Left is stinking up the country is beyond belief. Especially it's war on boys.

First they dismantle shop classes in school. Can't have them learning some practical skills. Sad when a adult male can't do basic vehicle maintenance or even use a band saw properly.

Then PE gets stuffed in a closet. Hey lets pump junior full of Ritalin since he's not allowed to run around on the playground anymore and stunt his development as a human being.

Boy Scouts become home to sexual predators and blue haired females and with that ends another healthy refuge for boys. I think the death knell for them was bringing in that nasty old WASP - Robert Gates to run it. Here was a man who rolled over his entire life to make promotions in the political arena. He is truly the man with no backbone and testicles. So of course he would shaft the Boy Scouts.
    , @Percy Gryce
This is a very good idea. We home-schooled one of our daughters for a couple of years and I wanted to include a 4H project in the program (ultimately didn't happen).

I can attest that 4-H is excellent for kids, but it doesn't seem to translate that well to urban environments. But, yeah, if there is a need for a "co-ed Scouts" type of thing, 4-H fills the bill. With the parents all there and everything, it's a good environment for kids of both sexes to interact with minimized bad consequences.
    , @ThreeCranes
    "Instead of make-work Merit Badges..."

Maybe things have changed, but when I was a scout I earned merit badges that taught me how to canoe, row, shoot a 22, shoot a bow, tie half a dozen useful knots, pitch a tent and tarp, build a fire, swim, lifeguard, navigate with a compass and topo map etc. I guess I'm a weird guy because I don't regard them as make-work and still enjoy doing those things.

Nothing against the 4-H, it's commendable, but they have a different emphasis compared to scouting.

I wonder. I was of course a Boy Scout. I had a lot of Merit Badges but my most vivid memory was when my cousin Willie and I went to Philmont as Explorer scouts. We were early teens and Scouting was beginning to seem a bit too juvenile for us, but we wanted to have one last scouting adventure. I think we were fifteen.

We went across the country. We started in Arlington Virginia outside of Washington DC and traveled by bus to Philmont New Mexico. We slept at Army bases. There were maybe forty of us. When we got to the camp we hiked up the Rockies and slept in pup tents. I and another kid got separated as night fell up some mountain and were chased up a tree by a mother bear.

All very masculine. But would a mother allow her teen age daughter to have gone with us? I and my buddy slept in sleeping bags alone and unsupervised in the uncharted wilderness in an Army surplus pup tent. If my tent mate had been a girl it would have been a whole different kind of adventure.

We don't need no Reese, not even Tennessee Witherspoon, although both her parents are smart Southerners.

What we're gonna get is a series of William the Conquerors until such time that the WASP / Jew ruling class is forcibly dislodged from power.

President Trump played the part of William the Conqueror when he used the immigration issue to eviscerate the treasonous rats in the GOP ruling class. William in 1066 thought he was getting screwed out from power in England so he crossed the Channel and slaughtered every stinking Saxon who stood in his way to power in England.

Trumpy saw how White Core Americans were being shut out of the debate on big questions regarding immigration, trade, foreign policy and US sovereignty. Trumpy, as a candidate, became the embodiment of the European Christian ancestral core of the United States. Trumpy combined the Southern Strategy and the German Strategy to defeat Hillary Clinton.

The Southern Strategy is to get the votes of Southern Anglo-Celts and Northern Catholics and the German Strategy is to get the votes of all the wonderful Kraut Americans in the WOMP states -- Wisconsin, Ohio, Michigan and Pennsylvania.

Trumpy was implicitly the White Core American candidate. What comes after Trumpy is explicit Whitey all the way to power.

A couple of articles I read hinted at this being a desperate attempt by the Boy Scouts to improve their rapidly declining numbers. Evangelical Christians and Mormons bolted in large numbers when the Boy Scouts decided to allow gay Scout leaders, the Christians formed an alternative group called Trail Life. Part of this is also driven by the decline in civic organizations that has happened across the board. Kids are too busy staring at screens to participate in Scouts. Although in this case, when an organization completely abandons it’s historic mission and purpose I don’t know how they could expect anything else. Who would still find membership in this group appealing?

I would have preferred they had gotten rid of the Boy Scouts entirely.

Lets face it, the whole purpose of the Scouts is to take young boys out in the woods and toughen them up, ultimately as preparation to be soldiers. It teaches them to have an adversarial relationship to nature, to want to conquer it. It favors machismo as well as groupthink and submission, a dangerous combination.

Of course abuse has been rampant in the Scouts, just like in the military, or any other situation where you have a power dynamic and a bunch of vulnerable young men at the mercy of all-powerful commanders.

Enough of bundling kids off to the wilderness to learn how to be tough and unfeeling. If we want a better society, we need to teach our children to be sensitive, caring and responsible from a young age. This is a step in the right direction.

  12. OT – but shocking.

Electronics-recycling innovator is going to prison for trying to extend computers’ lives

A Southern California man who built a sizable business out of recycling electronic waste is headed to federal prison for 15 months after a federal appeals court in Miami rejected his claim that the “restore discs” he made to extend computers’ lives had no financial value, instead ruling that he had infringed on Microsoft Corp. to the tune of $700,000 …

“I got in the way of their agenda,” Lundgren said, “this profit model that’s way more profitable than I could ever be” …

“I am going to prison, and I’ve accepted it,” Lundgren said Monday. “What I’m not OK with is people not understanding why I’m going to prison. Hopefully my story can shine some light on the e-waste epidemic we have in the United States, how wasteful we are. At what point do people stand up and say something? I didn’t say something, I just did it.”

It isn't shocking to anyone who has had dealings with Microsoft related to licensing. Congress is owned by the tech industry, they will do nothing to check Silicon Valley's power. That they are intentionally designing products with a short life span that are more and more integrated into people's daily lives every year should be a major scandal. If users find ways to get their devices to last longer, they send software updates that intentionally slow down the processor until users get fed up and buy a new one. Those are the real criminals.
    , @J.Ross
We deserve the fire. This is literally out of Gilliam's Brazil -- where did this guy get the idea that he could make things function properly? Planned obsolescence is the natural way! Buying a completely new system every time Microsoft changes the version number on its malware is Who We Are.
    , @Anonymous
I find it at least quadruply outrageous. It is:
    1) Derived from a government sting
    2) Directed against someone who not only wasn't acting with any sort of criminal intent, but was running a business that focused on achieving what any reasonable person would regard as a positive social goal
    3) A "crime" that seems to results only from illicitly using Microsoft's "intellectual property"
    4) A court decision that hinges on an utterly arbitrary "valuation" of a disc by a judge.

Every person who allowed this to proceed to the current result should be fired. I'd personally jail them on the grounds that they are trying to illicitly deprive an innocent man of his liberty.

The case seems to be getting attention, so maybe some group will step in and help the guy get funding for further appeals. This is a grotesque abuse of the legal system.

It's the Boy Scouts who started this, Phil, by trying to poach girls after their pervo scoutmaster thing hit them hard. Partly blame that on the Gay Mafia who came down hard on the Boy Scouts for not being too welcoming to gay scouts or scoutmasters; after all of that hoo haw (in Philly, the Boy Scouts were facing being shut out of facilities usage for being too cishetero and all), now they're running scared, but finding that no amount of craven caving in will save them, and that their efforts along that line have been cutting into their recruitment. Hence, the poaching of girls.

Seems to me that if you want the Boy Scouts to remain all male, and basically cishetero, why do you hold it against the Girl Scouts for wanting to remain all female, and basically cishetero? They, as opposed to the BSA, are trying to fight the good fight for the right to gender-exclusive organizations. It's the BSA that is pozzed here, not the Girl Scouts. No pleasing you, is there?

I guess this means the end of overnight camping, Jamborees, and just about all other traditional Boy Scout activities. The organizational friction of creating a curated and sterile environment to protect young girls from themselves and the pubescent Male Patriarchy in a mixed, free-flowing social environment will be too high to contemplate. After destroying the Boy Scouts, Feminists will have to find other venues in their quest to reprogram defective girls into ersatz boys.

Said another way, the new LGBT leadership of Scouting USA will be anticipating the inevitable row that erupts when the first female scout claims sexual assault at an organizational activity. On second thought, maybe not. “The fruit will be so ripe for picking.”

I remember Boys Scout meetings as boring, though we did have some time afterward to raise some hell outside. Girls would have been OK at the meetings--probably would have made them more fun. But we were an active troop, hiking or camping every other week, with some week-long trips in the summer. Much more fun, because scarcely supervised. I definitely would not let my daughter participate in a camping trip with a bunch of unsupervised boys. And I think it would be a rare girl who would have the physical gumption to keep up with boys on a 20 mile hike.

  17. George says:

If it really bothers you, start your own scouting organization.

I suspect that finding enough capable men with free time to volunteer as a scout leader, that you would trust a bunch of kids with, is becoming difficult if not impossible. Enter the need for women scoutmasters (scoutmistresses?). Once you have made that jump I don’t see why having co ed boys and girls troops is such a big jump.

Probably having girls in the troop will improve the behavior of the boys. And today the only permissible method of discipline is politely asking the kid to behave. So adding girls to the troops might make them more manageable as girls are allowed to bully and scold boys. This will prepare boys for a future military where the officers are largely female.

The military industrial complex and the elderly are eating everything: Adult formation of males is probably much more expensive than females. Transferring all resources to the military and the elderly does not leave much for the adult formation of males. Actually, it does not leave much for the adult formation of women either, but males are the first to be sacrificed as they probably need more resources to begin with.

In addition to being gender-neutral, We Be Scouts has the added advantage of being Ebonics. Why virtue-signal against only cis-hetero-sexism when, for the same price, you can do so against the racism of white language as well?

Not sure why this is news now; already some months ago, I had heard that the Buggery-- er, sorry, I mean Boy-- Scouts had announced that they would be accepting girls. Since they folded on the 'gay' issue, I had been calling them the Buggery Scouts of America.

Note that I saw only one commenter point-out that BSA had begun accepting openly homosexual scouts some time before capitulating further by abolishing even the ban on openly homosexual leaders.

Entryism is obviously a concern. This could go very poorly.

The dominant alt right view is that feminism is about sexually unattractive women attacking men out of spite. A questionable view since not all feminists are unattractive, and women have a much lower sex drive than men anyway. In my view, feminism is mostly about ambitious women wanting to dominate other women. The desire to be the cow in the centre of the herd. Ambitious women who are disliked or ignored by other women (for being disagreeable, unattractive, overly serious etc) focus on attacking men because they see this as a way to increase their social status among other women (protecting the herd from anti-social males). Hence, over time female-dominated institutions are likely to become bastions of dogmatic feminism that non-feminist women want to flee.

In Germany, if I recall, they are are called the Pathfinders. Sort of a sex neutral name, I’m kind of foggy on the structure, but the one time I saw any there were boys and girls together.

And here is what, as an American seemed kind of odd to me at the time. I was in a Catholic church, and they sang their Pathfinder song from the pews, during the service. It was really quite boisterous, with clapping. But I don’t think it was the whole unit, just those that happened to be in the church, from which grounds there some activity was going to later take place.

Another thing a lot of people would find odd is they don’t collect money in church. It is handled through the government, so it seems to me that churches are really under the government’s power there.

The Boy Scouts have been in the crosshairs for quite a while. They became a target during the 1990s over their stance on banning homosexuals. A campaign was launched to pressure the BSA to change this policy. The usual tactics of targeting financial supporters was used. I recall at the time thinking that if people did not like the policy, then they could join a similar alternative like Camp Fire or create their own organization. But they seemed intent on forcing the BSA to comply.

I remember Pat Buchanan said something along the lines that the reason the Boy Scouts could not be allowed to refuse was because they had too much historical prestige. That if they were allowed to defy contemporary mores and walk away it might give others the idea that they too could do the same.

Later some of the concern trolls in the media pleaded with the BSA to allow homosexuals because their membership had dropped significantly from its heydays. Apparently being bigoted when Will and Grace was such a popular show and when their was a bottom-up campaign to democratically enact gay marriage across the USA must have hurt their membership rolls. Of course none of these trolls pointed out that the Boy Scouts were still larger than the Girl Scouts, who had no such problems in changing with the times, and still an order of magnitude larger than Camp Fire who allowed gays and was already co-ed.

The Boy Scouts did hold out on their gay policy and appeared to have weathered the storm. Then they got a new head, former Defense Secretary Robert Gates, who went about dismantling that policy.

Mission accomplished. The prestigious BSA was made to heel. Of course I haven’t heard any concern trolls in the media discussing whether or not membership has increased. Wasn’t that supposedly the real reason behind the change? Gates had stated that the status quo was unsustainable.

Now they are going co-ed. So I assume their membership is going to explode. Funny how Camp Fire is still stuck on around 200K members when they have been what the BSA is now trying to become for years.

Instead of make-work Merit Badges, 4-H involves children in activites marking the passage into the adult world such as raising a calf, planting a crop, baking a cake, sewing a dress, or rebuilding an engine.

I agree that this effect isn't called out enough. I've witnessed it firsthand multiple times. Though as Art Deco says, it hasn't changed enough in the last few generations to be a primary explanation.

Instead, it is interfacing with amplified by the culture. There's an old trope of a man who wants a son but only has a daughter so raises her like a son. In a healthier culture, this would be recognized as being sick, but now it's encouraged -- he's just teaching her to be the strongest, most independent woman she can be.

    This.

Far better for mom to soldier on until she produces a son than for girls to be pushed to be dad's de facto son. My inlaws have only girls and their inlaws have only boys. They are currently steering the petite wimpy daughter into the military. Nuts. I was the only one to ever encourage their kids to even do a little sports. I just thought the girls should at least learn to swim for safety's sake. Until they started getting older, it was just books, music, some art, and tv. I feel sorry for the girl. I think she will figure out she can get a better deal outside of the military. I think it just seems exciting for now and she will get over it and not end up in the military. It isn't really a good place for women.

The more children one has the less time the parents have to allocate. Those with larger families than 2 start having to realize that bang per buck is important to achieve with parental attention. What is also the case is that what a father wants to teach his children will be fanatically enjoyed by sons and at best lukewarmly tolerated by girls. The natural response is to allocate more attention where it is appreciated.

This makes sense - you have the male roles and female roles mentored by... wait for it... those who actually do them and are good at them. In the end you get an equivalent amount of time spent with each child. But try telling this to one's liberalish wife! I am not saying to ignore your daughters btw but additional effort e.g. going hunting, shooting, building, wrestling or whatever with sons is a better allocation IMO.

Will they retain the trademark and sue to prevent other people from using the name "Boy Scouts of America" as the name of a new group that is better for boys?

There’s already a clean replacement for BSA. It’s called “Trail Life.” Boys only, no homo stuff, male leaders, religious emphasis. Should be okay for a while, until the SJWs get ‘em sighted in.

Why don't boys and girls forgo the Scouts and participate in 4-H?

You might think it is a hayseed version of the Scouts, but it has always welcomed both boys and girls while not being embarrassed by traditional gender interests. Instead of make-work Merit Badges, 4-H involves children in activites marking the passage into the adult world such as raising a calf, planting a crop, baking a cake, sewing a dress, or rebuilding an engine.

Dare I suggest that a Citizenship project in 4-H could involve participating in the "conversation" with iSteve? https://4h.extension.illinois.edu/members/projects

There certainly is an opportunity for a “conservative” option if 4-H counts. I can’t imagine this won’t kill the scouts. They look like a laughing stock. No kid wants to be a laughing stock.

And here's an off topic but broadly "battle of the sexes" related story.

Why women (and the kinds of men who pander to them) should never be in positions of authority over men, and certainly not in predominantly male activity areas:

Lifeboatman with 15 years' service is one of two sacked after their 'jokey' tea mugs showing naked women were branded a 'safeguarding risk' in case visiting school children saw them

Trainee Joe Winspear, 26 and crewman Ben Laws were dismissed by phone
Whitby RNLI volunteers let go after female boss found their Secret Santa mugs
One mug had Mr Winspear's face on it superimposed on a naked woman's body
Four other members of staff have allegedly quit in protest over the mug row

It looks as though there is a lurking social media matter behind this as well, or at any rate the RNLI want us to think there is, as witnessed by vague references to "going through their Whatzapp messages" in the disciplinary hearing, and the following comment on the DM story: "I am a governor member of the RNLI. I am because I go to sea in small ships and rely on this volunteer service to keep me safe. After reading this article I rang the RNLI head office to voice my concern. All I am going to say is that there is more to this than what the Daily Mail are reporting. Please keep on donating . Remember , the RNLI would not exist if it wasn't for your donations. There are brave men and women throughout the UK and the Irish republic who need your support."

However the problem was still clearly caused by a female in a position of authority over-reacting to something that should be of no concern, and the institutional hierarchy taking her nonsense seriously rather than laughing at her and telling her to go away and find something useful to do, as they ought to have done.

… the institutional hierarchy taking her nonsense seriously rather than laughing at her and telling her to go away and find something useful to do, as they ought to have done.

Yes, Randal, but I’ve seen that lots of this has nothing to do with sex or race or anything more than corporate weenies’ response to the atmosphere of ZERO! TOLERANCE!

These days, in the corporate world, you are much better off to bring down the big discipline, or fire someone, for any little thing, than to blow it off, and give just a small “word to the wise” to the employee. It could go like “Listen, man, you’re one of our best guys, but this kind of thing is going to piss off some HR bitch at some point. Please, for your own good, don’t do it anymore … but, it was hilarious, and I’m gonna tell this story to my buddies!” However, that’s only if the boss has got some guts. Most of them in Big Biz do not have that kind of guts and sensibility. It’s ZERO TOLERANCE and MAXIMUM STUPIDITY all the way down.

BTW, an incident I was involved it like this (yes, as the culprit) did not involve sexual relations, un-PC talk, or any of that. It was a man in this case who got me in big trouble for a joke … well I used that term “man” just for readability. He was a standard corporate weenie. Yes, he’s been promoted.

Any one with the faintest idea about HR issues would know that in order to administer discipline, the employee/volunteer must have broken a policy. The policy must be clear and unequivocal, and other breaches of the policy must have been consistently acted upon.
In the "sexy mug" case, if the new female boss was offended, but there was no policy prohibiting it, it's tough titty ma'am (pun intended), unless the volunteer refused a direct order to remove it, irrespective of the lack of policy. That is insubordination. The volunteer ought to have obeyed, then filed a complaint against the boss for harassment in overstepping her authority.

I will say however, that having spent 33 years in Labour Relations, my experience was that the "HR bitch" theme is not fiction, rather fact, in most instances.

A lot of this nonsense is the result of smaller family sizes. When a third generation Eagle Scout only has one kid and she’s a girl, it’s not hard to predict the result.

I don’t remember if it was here or at Z Man’s blog but someone suggested that smaller family sizes may be helping masculinize women in sports too.

4-H would be a good alternative since you get to learn some useful, practical skills. I know at least in the more rural regions the 4-H is pretty intact. Can’t say much for what’s happening in the urban schools.

The way the Left is stinking up the country is beyond belief. Especially it’s war on boys.

First they dismantle shop classes in school. Can’t have them learning some practical skills. Sad when a adult male can’t do basic vehicle maintenance or even use a band saw properly.

Then PE gets stuffed in a closet. Hey lets pump junior full of Ritalin since he’s not allowed to run around on the playground anymore and stunt his development as a human being.

Boy Scouts become home to sexual predators and blue haired females and with that ends another healthy refuge for boys. I think the death knell for them was bringing in that nasty old WASP – Robert Gates to run it. Here was a man who rolled over his entire life to make promotions in the political arena. He is truly the man with no backbone and testicles. So of course he would shaft the Boy Scouts.

In the late 1980s, I organized a Boy Scout troop in southern California. Yes, it was difficult to find adult males to support the troop. The SoCal commutes, you know. Weekends are considered sacred personal time.

At one organizational meeting, a man showed up and said he wanted to help out ... not married, no kids. We took one look at him and said, "No way is this guy going on overnight camping trips with our sons." Our consensus was that he was a little light in the loafers.

Years later, homosexuals like him were invited to be Boy Scout leaders. Henceforth, it would be discrimination to object to them taking boys into the forest on overnight camping trips.

My, have times have changed. What used to be considered perversion and an insane suspension of parental judgment are now accepted practice.

Let's wish the newly reconstituted Scouts of America a quick demise.

The Boy Scouts have had co-ed groups for teenagers decades ago starting in 1971. The Girl Scouts are adamantly sticking to a girls only approach to develop sisterhood (gag!) but one could argue that it develops a male exclusion mentality that carries over into the adult world. Perhaps losing a young male child only space is bad for their development, IDK. There are certainly other options out there for male bonding and leadership but the Boy Scouts were such an iconic male organization. It’s the sad state of these times these organizations are targeted for “rehabilitation”.

So what–they are going to let girls in..Oh No! Get over it. Personally, I think it’s a long overdue development that doesn’t go nearly far enough.

Take my cousin, for example. He’s 35 year and lives with his Mom. He doesn’t have any friends, and he just got fired from his custodial job for the All Boys Catholic school in his neighborhood. [They were total jerks about the firing too. They said if he comes within 200 yards of the school he'd be arrested! I told my cousin that this violates his rights, and that he should call a lawyer. But my cousin-- who's super easy going-- said he just didn't want to ruffle any feathers, so he's not going to pursue it.]

Anyways, the whole firing business has really made him depressed as he misses all the camaraderie. [He often enjoyed sleepovers with several kids who go to the school.] I think it’d be great for his spirits if he was allowed to join the Scouts. He’s had some legal issues over the years, so he wouldn’t be qualified to be a Scout Leader–and I totally get that. But the fellowship and life lessons learned from going on sleepovers out in the woods with fellow 12 year old Scouts would be just the tonic he needs to get over his depression. Plus, the skills picked up would come in handy should he ever decide to work again. The Scouts would be GREAT for my cousin. Stop the Ageism for crying out loud.

When my father died, I took over the old house and started going through stuff. There was a wooden sea chest from his Navy days that had always been with him. I’d never seen the inside of it. When I opened it, there were his old drafting tools from his early engineering days; there was a collection of silver coins I never knew he had; there were his Navy medals and ribbons…

…and right there with all those wonderful things was the Handbook For Boys, Boy Scouts of America, 3rd Edition.

My mind reels. The BSA heroically battles the current ideology for a couple of decades, ultimately capitulates and then seemingly overnight devolves into something completely unrecognizable.
Then, the current ideology, i.e. Girls Scouts, puts them through the same ringer, backwards.

And most people shrug because they're too busy looking at their phones and watching the Voice. I have nothing to add other than my complete despondency, and I was never even a Boy Scout.

Quite right. BSA won one of the few conservative victories at the Supreme Court in the Culture Wars:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boy_Scouts_of_America_v._Dale

and they simply threw that away.

I’ll give Tiny Duck this: he is one dedicated troll.

    OT - but shocking.

Electronics-recycling innovator is going to prison for trying to extend computers' lives

A Southern California man who built a sizable business out of recycling electronic waste is headed to federal prison for 15 months after a federal appeals court in Miami rejected his claim that the "restore discs" he made to extend computers' lives had no financial value, instead ruling that he had infringed on Microsoft Corp. to the tune of $700,000 ...

"I got in the way of their agenda," Lundgren said, "this profit model that's way more profitable than I could ever be" ...

"I am going to prison, and I've accepted it," Lundgren said Monday. "What I'm not OK with is people not understanding why I'm going to prison. Hopefully my story can shine some light on the e-waste epidemic we have in the United States, how wasteful we are. At what point do people stand up and say something? I didn't say something, I just did it."

It isn’t shocking to anyone who has had dealings with Microsoft related to licensing. Congress is owned by the tech industry, they will do nothing to check Silicon Valley’s power. That they are intentionally designing products with a short life span that are more and more integrated into people’s daily lives every year should be a major scandal. If users find ways to get their devices to last longer, they send software updates that intentionally slow down the processor until users get fed up and buy a new one. Those are the real criminals.

Back in the bad old days Cub Scouts were organized into small dens with a den mother, and meetings were held in the den mother’s home. Boy Scouts were organized into larger troops with a scoutmaster, and meetings were held in VFW lodges, community centers, or schools. Kind of an acknowledgement that when a boy reaches adolescence he needs a male leader, not his mommy. Then cultural Marxism took a big shit on Western Civilization.

    @Citizen of a Silly Country

Corporate philanthropy is a dubious bit of business anyway and should be debarred by law. Shareholders are free to donate to the causes they choose drawing on their personal resources.

This has stuck in my craw for years. Sure, corporations could argue that charity donations are a form of marketing/goodwill, but they still have to choose among the tens of thousands of charities and thus are making value judgements with MY money.

Corporations should have five options with capital:

    - Invest in existing operations
    - Acquire other businesses
    - Dividend
    - Share repurchase
    - Reduce debt

All of those presumably will benefit shareholders (though, in reality, options 1 & 2 seem to hurt), but giving my money to various SJW shakedowns not only doesn't benefit me, it causes me harm.

Once you exchange your money for a corporate good or service it is not your money any more.

As a shareholder you have no say in the expenditures of the corporation beyond voting for the board of directors. There is something called corporate waste but in general you would be better off electing new directors or selling your shares if you don;t like how they spend because it is very difficult to get a court to overturn business judgment.

Once they allowed gay scout masters, the writing was on the wall.

In the late 1980s, I organized a Boy Scout troop in southern California. Yes, it was difficult to find adult males to support the troop. The SoCal commutes, you know. Weekends are considered sacred personal time.

At one organizational meeting, a man showed up and said he wanted to help out … not married, no kids. We took one look at him and said, “No way is this guy going on overnight camping trips with our sons.” Our consensus was that he was a little light in the loafers.

Years later, homosexuals like him were invited to be Boy Scout leaders. Henceforth, it would be discrimination to object to them taking boys into the forest on overnight camping trips.

My, have times have changed. What used to be considered perversion and an insane suspension of parental judgment are now accepted practice.

Let’s wish the newly reconstituted Scouts of America a quick demise.

I was thinking that this must be a big punch in the gut for Steve, because he has alluded here to some scouting experiences in his life.

When my father died, I took over the old house and started going through stuff. There was a wooden sea chest from his Navy days that had always been with him. I'd never seen the inside of it. When I opened it, there were his old drafting tools from his early engineering days; there was a collection of silver coins I never knew he had; there were his Navy medals and ribbons...

...and right there with all those wonderful things was the Handbook For Boys, Boy Scouts of America, 3rd Edition.

Dad had kept his Boy Scout manual his whole life -- since the 1930s.

The cover illustration is by Norman Rockwell.

It’s been going downhill for a while. I remember reading yeats ago that they took knives out of the safe knife handling badge on safety grounds, and angry parents were organizing their own programs or joining small traditional groups. Well before the gay thing there was grumbling about the camping getting more expensive and more limited.

I can attest that 4-H is excellent for kids, but it doesn’t seem to translate that well to urban environments. But, yeah, if there is a need for a “co-ed Scouts” type of thing, 4-H fills the bill. With the parents all there and everything, it’s a good environment for kids of both sexes to interact with minimized bad consequences.

Yes, I think it's worth keeping in mind that Leftism doesn't have a long term goal, it's just the net result of individuals jockeying for social status; trying to appear morally and intellectually superior.

As such, there is no possibility of appeasement, compromise, "live and let live" or anything like that.

I was just thinking the other day about the discussions I had in the 80′s about the coming out of homosexuals in society. Back then, and earlier, the argument was that the self-destructive behavior of these guys was due to society repressing them. They had to be furtive and seclude themselves in the closet. If they could be open and have their freedom then they would all begin to behave themselves and be fulfilled and happy people.

Well how did that work out?!? Promptly, there were huge death numbers from a new disease and now we have continuing STD epidemics all spreading through MSM.

So what--they are going to let girls in..Oh No! Get over it. Personally, I think it's a long overdue development that doesn't go nearly far enough.

Take my cousin, for example. He's 35 year and lives with his Mom. He doesn't have any friends, and he just got fired from his custodial job for the All Boys Catholic school in his neighborhood.

[He often enjoyed sleepovers with several kids who go to the school.] I think it'd be great for his spirits if he was allowed to join the Scouts. He's had some legal issues over the years, so he wouldn't be qualified to be a Scout Leader--and I totally get that.

    Whiskey’s cousin weighs in…

Total fertility rates have hardly changed in 40 years. Every cohort of parents under the age of 65 has built their own family in a matrix of 2-child families. Contemporaries of my grandparents were doing so in the 1930s and 1940s as well (given the impact of the Depression and the War on fertility).

Is childbirth more spaced maybe so that the effect described might show up for parents of girls who haven’t yet had their second child. For instance maybe a family with an eldest daughter two years apart from a younger son would be immune to this kind of effect in a way a family with a daughter ten years older than their son might.

Becuse I get the stats are what they are but I have observed the effect.

    The Blindness of Social Wealth
    David Brooks
    By David Brooks

Bob Hall was a rancher. In 1936, in the midst of the Depression, he was suffering from a cancer that was eating the flesh on the side of his face. His ranch had dwindled to nearly nothing, and weeks after bankers took the last of his livestock, Hall died, leaving his family deeply in debt.

His sons pleaded with anybody they could find to make a loan and save the family ranch. No one would do it. Finally, in desperation, they went to their neighbor, Buzz Newton, who was known for his miserliness, and asked him to co-sign a loan. “I always thought so much of your dad; he was the most generous man I have known,” Newton answered. “Yes, I’ll co-sign the note.”

Bob Hall’s grandson, also named Robert Hall, drew out the lesson in his book “This Land of Strangers,” noting: “The truth is, relationships are the most valuable and value-creating resource of any society. They are our lifelines to survive, grow and thrive.”

There’s a mountain of evidence suggesting that the quality of our relationships has been in steady decline for decades. In the 1980s, 20 percent of Americans said they were often lonely. Now it’s 40 percent. Suicide rates are now at a 30-year high. Depression rates have increased tenfold since 1960, which is not only a result of greater reporting. Most children born to mothers under 30 are born outside of marriage. There’s been a steady 30-year decline in Americans’ satisfaction with the peer-to-peer relationships at work.

Former Surgeon General Vivek Murthy summarized his experience as a doctor in an article in September in The Harvard Business Review: “During my years caring for patients, the most common pathology I saw was not heart disease or diabetes; it was loneliness.”

Patients came to see him partly because they were lonely, partly because loneliness made them sick. Weak social connections have health effects similar to smoking 15 cigarettes a day, and a greater negative effect than obesity, he said.

Over the past five years, such trends have abruptly gotten worse. In 2012, 5.9 percent of young people suffered from severe mental health issues. By 2015 it was 8.2 percent.

Last year, Jean Twenge wrote a much-discussed article for The Atlantic, “Have Smartphones Destroyed a Generation,” charting the accelerating social collapse. Teenagers are suddenly less likely to date, less likely to leave the home without their parents, more likely to put off the activities of adulthood. They are spending more time alone with their digital screens, and the greater the screen time, the greater the unhappiness. Eighth graders who are heavy users of social media are 27 percent more likely to be depressed.

I summarize all this because loneliness and social isolation are the problem that undergird many of our other problems. More and more Americans are socially poor. And yet it is very hard for the socially wealthy to even see this fact. It is the very nature of loneliness and social isolation to be invisible. We talk as if the lonely don’t exist.

I was really struck by this last week, when Mark Zuckerberg came through Washington. Most of the questions he faced at the congressional hearings and most of the analysis in the press were about Facebook’s failure to protect privacy. That’s the sort of thing that may be uppermost on your mind if you are socially wealthy, if, like most successful politicians and analysts, you live within a thick web of connection and feel as if your social schedule is too full.

But the big issue surrounding Facebook is not privacy. It’s that Facebook and other social media companies are feeding this epidemic of loneliness and social isolation. It’s not only that heavy social media users are sadder. It’s not only that online life seems to heighten painful comparisons and both inflate and threaten the ego. It’s that heavy internet users are much less likely to have contact with their proximate neighbors to exchange favors and extend care. There’s something big happening to the social structure of neighborhoods.

The British anthropologist Robin Dunbar observes that human societies exist on three levels: the clan (your family and close friends), the village (your local community) and the tribe (your larger group). In America today you would say that the clans have polarized, the villages have been decimated and the tribes have become weaponized.

That is, some highly educated families have helicopter parents while less fortunate families have absent parents. The middle ring cross-class associations of town and neighborhood have fallen apart. People try to compensate for the lack of intimate connection by placing their moral and emotional longings on their political, ethnic and other tribes, turning them viciously on each other.

The mass migration to online life is not the only force driving these trends, but it is a big one. Such big subjects didn’t come up in the Zuckerberg hearings because socially wealthy and socially poor people experience Facebook differently and perceive reality and social problems differently. It’s very hard to quantify and communicate the decline in quality of relationships. But it is nonetheless true that many of us who are socially wealthy don’t really know how the other half lives

I guess I’m a weird guy because I don’t regard them as make-work and still enjoy doing those things.

Nothing against the 4-H, it’s commendable, but they have a different emphasis compared to scouting.

LLVM contributor hits breakpoint, quits citing inclusivity intolerance: Discrimination is unethical, developer declares

Rafael Avila de Espindola, one of the top contributors to the LLVM compiler toolset, has cut ties with the open source project over what he perceives as code of conduct hypocrisy and support for ethnic favoritism.

In a message posted to the LLVM mailing list, de Espindola said he was leaving immediately and cited changes in the community.

“The last drop was LLVM associating itself with an organization that openly discriminates based on sex and ancestry,” said de Espindola. “This goes directly against my ethical views and I think I must leave the project to not be associated with this.”

The organization in question is Outreachy, a group that provides paid three-month internships ($5,500 + $500 in travel expenses) for underrepresented groups in the tech industry.

As Outreachy explains on its website, “Outreachy internships are open internationally to women (cis and trans), trans men, and genderqueer people. Internships are also open to residents and nationals of the United States of any gender who are Black/African American, Hispanic/Latin@, Native American/American Indian, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, or Pacific Islander.”

In other words, US-based Caucasians and Asians are not eligible.

As a kid in the 90s I joined the scouts expecting to do manly survival stuff, like the scouting magazine showed. The scout leaders were all moms, and we spent our time making arts and crafts gifts for our moms.

Right. And corporations have all bought into the “giving back to the community” BS.

    I'm speechless.

    Great memories Pat.

I went to Philmont last summer with my son and some of his troop. It was physically tough (hiking over 60 miles in elevations as high as 12,000 feet) but a trip I'll never forget. It was my first time in the Sangre De Cristo Mountains (I've been all over the rest of the mountain west - I'm like that Hank Snow song "I've Been Everywhere - but I had never done more than drive thru New Mexico") and really enjoyed it.

Now I'm gonna go all Art Deco on you and quibble and correct minor, semi-relevant details. Philmont is not really wilderness. It was a working ranch that was a gift to the Boy Scouts from oil bazillionaire Waite Phillips. He donated 130,000 or so acres of his 140,000+ acre ranch.

A lot of it is still a working ranch. One of the other dads on our trip has never really been out of cities and commented on the "wild cattle" we'd pass. After a few days of "hey look more wild cows" I explained the concept of a ranch to him.

Since Phillips' gift, the BSA have gained access to adjacent ranches as well as BLM land and cobbled together about 210,000 acres for scouts to use.

As an aside, we saw girls on the trip - on different parts of the ranch with the Explorer Scouts.

As far as gays and girls - my understand is that the BSA leaves that up to the individual troops. All of our leaders and ass't leaders are fathers of active Scouts. No gays (as far I know) or girls among the Scouts either.

    , @Rosie

I and another kid got separated as night fell up some mountain and were chased up a tree by a mother bear.

I agree with Tiny Duck if for different reason.

    Soy Scouts is crap now.

This is all part of politicizing everything, a kind of Vulgar Gramscism.

For these people, there is no separation of ideology/politics and culture/society.

Everything, even TV commercials and comic books, must be turned into a teachable moment. How many TV ads are homo promotions, or homotions? Even fast food is served in homo colors. 'pride' burger. Why would anyone want to eat a burger associating buns with bungs?

I read a lot of Archies Comic books as a kid. And they were just goofy fun with Jughead and Moose and Reggie. It was escapism. There was a funny one where Jughead drops his burgers on the beach and complains about 'sandy burgers' whereupon a girl names Sandy Berger thinks he's calling on her. Fun stuff.

But I heard a recent one has Archie taking a bullet to protect a homo politician. WTF.

This is a corruption of both entertainment/escapism and radicalism. What is meant for fun and fantasy is turned into a political lesson. But then, radicalism is turned into bubblegum.

Godard was onto something when he characterized the 60s youth as generation of Marx and Coca-Cola. Unlike older generation of leftists, the youth were too much into fun and hedonism. They couldn't say NO to capitalism even as they denounced it. So, they decided to indulge in capitalism while using its idolic power to push symbolic 'leftism'. That way, they could have the cake and eat it too. Capitalist cake, radical icing.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmJ5VRdBVTU (Wow, a Paris that was still white.)

To be sure, all culture, high and low, has political implications and subtext even if none is intended. Everything is, to a large, measure, a product of its economic and social system. We may not think of I DREAM OF JEANNIE as particularly political, but I doubt if a communist system would have come up with such a show.

Still, the brazen politicization of everything kills the fun. After all, the whole point of fantasy is escapism. What we have today is really strange, a perverse wedding of hyper unreality with supposedly urgent worldly issues. This is the opposite of the zeitgeist after WWII.
Neo-realism sought to bring the camera closer to the lived world of poverty and social problems. Rise of documentary film, especially cinema-verite, sought to capture life as it is 'really' is, warts and all. So, DON'T LOOK BACK, MONTEREY POP, LET IT BE, and GIMME SHELTER caught much that was grubby and ugly.
And there was a movement toward greater realism in film. So, THE FRENCH CONNECTION had a grimy washed out look and had heroes who looked like regular people. COLUMBO, KOJACK, ROCKFORD FILES, and BARETTA has gritty look of the street.
The idea was that, in order for movies and culture to address real issues, it had to represent reality more honestly and accurately.

And then STAR WARS came along as the total triumph of fantasy. Same with ET. People forgot about reality and wanted more fantasy. Initially, the Libs and progs denounced such films as going against the grain and spirit of New Hollywood of the 1970s, supposedly the golden age of American Film-making.

But fast forward to today, and the Libs and Progs have totally made peace with fantasy and escapism as their favored vehicle of getting ideas and issues across.
    But here's the problem.
Fantasy is totally removed from reality. Fantasy is about guys who can fly. It's about spaceships traveling at light speed without even the need for seatbelts.
And yet, fantasy is now the vehicle for real life issues. So, we are supposed to watch the new STAR WARS movie and see it as some meaningful allegory about the Current Year. We are supposed to watch BLACK PANTHER and pretend to learn something real about Africa or black reality. But in a world where Bruce Jenner strutting around as a 'woman' and peeing in Trump tower is an act of courage, I guess anything goes.

This makes sense – you have the male roles and female roles mentored by… wait for it… those who actually do them and are good at them. In the end you get an equivalent amount of time spent with each child. But try telling this to one’s liberalish wife! I am not saying to ignore your daughters btw but additional effort e.g. going hunting, shooting, building, wrestling or whatever with sons is a better allocation IMO.

Not many people were outraged by Apple shenanigans with slowing down iPhones. People love their corporations.

My dad and my uncles, all vets, were scout leaders and we spent a lot of time camping together. It was a positive experience for myself, my brother and our cousins. Without a dedicate role model leader scouting would have been and will be less of a life forming endeavor. Don’t dilute it. Let it die.

The issue of why are Ivy league butt-kissers running the modern world so negligently and effetely is not commonly the concern of our meritocratic pundits and doctors-of-journalism, for some reason.

After another 10 years of this old episodes of “The Office” and “Veep” will be considered young-professional lifestyle dramas instead of satires.

Entryism is obviously a concern. This could go very poorly.

But I think most people aren't understanding that the core motivation for this move is that scouting families by and large despise the Girl Scouts because they have become, explicitly, a the feminist version of the Young Pioneers.

  138. Hmm. Feminists have always said that men and boys are all lust-crazed animals barely under control. Therefore they must be letting girls into this organization solely for the purpose of using them to sate the males sexual appetites. Perhaps as well to provide access to the lesbian adult volunteers who will also be joining now. As always, the boys will be used by the gay leaders as well.

Do I believe this to be true? Not really. But as the organization is now converged, it should be destroyed. This type of rumor and innuendo will help the destruction along. Jokes like instead of tents being staked out at night, the girls are staked out for days. Yes, a disgusting image, but perhaps useful. Ask the leaders who promote this if their last training meeting was in Rotherham.

Referring to the group as the Sex Scouts should help drive the point home. Make it so any parent letting their child join the Sex Scouts is viewed as a possible predator.

I would have preferred they had gotten rid of the Boy Scouts entirely.

Trust me, a lot of former Scouts would prefer to get rid of you too.

‘pride’ burger. Why would anyone want to eat a burger associating buns with bungs?

I read a lot of Archies Comic books as a kid. And they were just goofy fun with Jughead and Moose and Reggie. It was escapism. There was a funny one where Jughead drops his burgers on the beach and complains about ‘sandy burgers’ whereupon a girl names Sandy Berger thinks he’s calling on her.

They couldn’t say NO to capitalism even as they denounced it. So, they decided to indulge in capitalism while using its idolic power to push symbolic ‘leftism’.

Rise of documentary film, especially cinema-verite, sought to capture life as it is ‘really’ is, warts and all. So, DON’T LOOK BACK, MONTEREY POP, LET IT BE, and GIMME SHELTER caught much that was grubby and ugly.

    But here’s the problem.
Fantasy is totally removed from reality. Fantasy is about guys who can fly. It’s about spaceships traveling at light speed without even the need for seatbelts.
And yet, fantasy is now the vehicle for real life issues. So, we are supposed to watch the new STAR WARS movie and see it as some meaningful allegory about the Current Year. We are supposed to watch BLACK PANTHER and pretend to learn something real about Africa or black reality. But in a world where Bruce Jenner strutting around as a ‘woman’ and peeing in Trump tower is an act of courage, I guess anything goes.

    Great memories Pat.

I went to Philmont last summer with my son and some of his troop. It was physically tough (hiking over 60 miles in elevations as high as 12,000 feet) but a trip I’ll never forget. It was my first time in the Sangre De Cristo Mountains (I’ve been all over the rest of the mountain west – I’m like that Hank Snow song “I’ve Been Everywhere – but I had never done more than drive thru New Mexico”) and really enjoyed it.

Now I’m gonna go all Art Deco on you and quibble and correct minor, semi-relevant details. Philmont is not really wilderness. It was a working ranch that was a gift to the Boy Scouts from oil bazillionaire Waite Phillips. He donated 130,000 or so acres of his 140,000+ acre ranch.

A lot of it is still a working ranch. One of the other dads on our trip has never really been out of cities and commented on the “wild cattle” we’d pass. After a few days of “hey look more wild cows” I explained the concept of a ranch to him.

Since Phillips’ gift, the BSA have gained access to adjacent ranches as well as BLM land and cobbled together about 210,000 acres for scouts to use.

As an aside, we saw girls on the trip – on different parts of the ranch with the Explorer Scouts.

As far as gays and girls – my understand is that the BSA leaves that up to the individual troops. All of our leaders and ass’t leaders are fathers of active Scouts. No gays (as far I know) or girls among the Scouts either.

"Who, Whom?" Apply Lenin to sex.

"4 Legs Good, Two Legs Bad." Apply Orwell to sex.

Girls are good, and Boys are bad.

"What's mine is mine. And what's yours is mine, too."

Amherst had to integrate, while Smith remains only for girls. Wellesley is for girls. They don't have to integrate.

The Boy Scouts should integrate. The Girl Scouts shouldn't have to.

If girls aren't much interested in mechanical devices, it just shows how bad boys are; they've created a sexist society. If boys are less social than girls, it confirms what we already know: boys are bad.

It’s the Boy Scouts who started this, Phil, by trying to poach girls after their pervo scoutmaster thing hit them hard. Partly blame that on the Gay Mafia who came down hard on the Boy Scouts for not being too welcoming to gay scouts or scoutmasters; after all of that hoo haw (in Philly, the Boy Scouts were facing being shut out of facilities usage for being too cishetero and all), now they’re running scared, but finding that no amount of craven caving in will save them, and that their efforts along that line have been cutting into their recruitment.

It’s the BSA that is pozzed here, not the Girl Scouts. No pleasing you, is there?

In a lot of ways time had already passed Boy Scouts by. But it’s still sad to see iconic institutions succumb to the poz. It’s astonishing how the left is able to huijack/implode all of these well-established organizations, often without much of a fight. Or a little fight that just seems to delay the inevitable.

For another example, I recently noticed that the YWCA, an organization founded in 1858, now features the slogan “Eliminating Racism, Empowering Women” as part of their logo. Confused by this, I looked up their website and this is their about statement.

YWCA USA is on a mission to eliminate racism, empower women, stand up for social justice, help families, and strengthen communities. We are one of the oldest and largest women’s organizations in the nation, serving over 2 million women, girls, and their families.

YWCA has been at the forefront of the most pressing social movements for more than 160 years — from voting rights to civil rights, from affordable housing to pay equity, from violence prevention to health care reform. Today, we combine programming and advocacy in order to generate institutional change in three key areas: racial justice and civil rights, empowerment and economic advancement of women and girls, and health and safety of women and girls.

You can’t make this stuff up.

"The fruit will be so ripe for picking."

Boy Scouts of America ... RIP.

I remember Boys Scout meetings as boring, though we did have some time afterward to raise some hell outside. Girls would have been OK at the meetings–probably would have made them more fun.

    1) Derived from a government sting
    2) Directed against someone who not only wasn’t acting with any sort of criminal intent, but was running a business that focused on achieving what any reasonable person would regard as a positive social goal
    3) A “crime” that seems to results only from illicitly using Microsoft’s “intellectual property”
    4) A court decision that hinges on an utterly arbitrary “valuation” of a disc by a judge.

Every person who allowed this to proceed to the current result should be fired. I’d personally jail them on the grounds that they are trying to illicitly deprive an innocent man of his liberty.

The case seems to be getting attention, so maybe some group will step in and help the guy get funding for further appeals. This is a grotesque abuse of the legal system.

Although in this case, when an organization completely abandons it's historic mission and purpose I don't know how they could expect anything else. Who would still find membership in this group appealing?

The Boy Scouts programs and “experiences” are not created for and with boys. They are created to make boys good citizens and serve others, not themselves. Girls scouts is about teaching girls to be even more into themselves than girls are already, which is saying something considering the longstanding and well known affliction of female vanity.

A lot of this nonsense is the result of smaller family sizes. When a third generation Eagle Scout only has one kid and she’s a girl, it’s not hard to predict the result.

    This.

Far better for mom to soldier on until she produces a son than for girls to be pushed to be dad’s de facto son. My inlaws have only girls and their inlaws have only boys. They are currently steering the petite wimpy daughter into the military. Nuts. I was the only one to ever encourage their kids to even do a little sports. I just thought the girls should at least learn to swim for safety’s sake. Until they started getting older, it was just books, music, some art, and tv. I feel sorry for the girl. I think she will figure out she can get a better deal outside of the military. I think it just seems exciting for now and she will get over it and not end up in the military. It isn’t really a good place for women.

Why women (and the kinds of men who pander to them) should never be in positions of authority over men, and certainly not in predominantly male activity areas:

Men who use anecdotes to justify discrimination should never be in positions of authority over women, whether it is in a predominantly male or female “activity area.”

I and another kid got separated as night fell up some mountain and were chased up a tree by a mother bear.

Great. Another thing to worry about. Just what I needed.

Oh well. I guess I can’t complain. I’m the one hanging out on a website with a bunch of guys. ;)

From an organisational perspective the big losers are probably going to be the Girl Scouts. Social science studies show that "tomboys" tend to outnumber "sissies" among European and Asian children. Hence tomboys will join the Boy Scouts and the Girl Scouts will shrink.

M$ provides Windows executables in a CD-burnable ISO format that can be used to make an install disc or put on a bootable jump drive for free download, but you have to individually enter a valid product code for the OS involved. You can then use that CD or jump drive to load as many machines as you want but each machine needs a unique valid product key for activation. Microsoft specifically enjoins other people from hosting or distributing this.

You don't need a Install CD any more, anyone can download it onto media themselves, but that does not mean anyone can redistribute or rehost it without permission.

You left out the fact that the Girl Scouts are still going to be a sex-exclusive entity. Although the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts are different organisations, it'll be interesting if they also decide to also go co-ed (I think they've admitted trans boys before though) or merge ala the Parks and Recreation episode.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dsIlLiU1zEA

Holy moly, Boy Scouts going co-ed is sexism! Because girls are different and need a specific environment to help develop them. No word on if the Boy Scouts staying a place for boys might be worth anything.

Maybe that’s just Northern California? If girl Scout leaders are, and I’m guessing, barren lesbians rather than moms, who needs that?

    The Blindness of Social Wealth
    David Brooks
    By David Brooks

    Opinion Columnist

    April 16, 2018

CreditLeah Nash for The New York Times

This is a very nice contribution, but I beg that the next time you do this, look over what you have copied and delete freely anything that’s not part of the writing.

My son is cub scout age, and has tried cub scouts. Very disappointing experience (for him and me). Cub scouts (and boy scouts, with whom we interacted occasionally) have no discipline-since its a club with no real purpose, the fathers are unwilling to impose structure or goals and objectives. So there are none. The cub scout activities were, as others have said, largely feminine and absurdly juvenile (racing with balloons across the room).

I say this because the contrast with organized sports is clear. Regardless of ability, kids are drilled, and given instruction, and given intermediate goals, and learn responsibility, physical fitness, and teamwork. Structure and obligations can be taught to 9 year olds: basketball teams do it all the time. The same fathers that really let cub scouts run wild (what else? GET OVER HERE AND MAKE THAT BIRDHOUSE!) are perfectly willing to impose themselves (usually politely-no Bobby Knights that I have experienced) with regard to dribbling, passing, batting, and kicking.

The scouts just don't have that (whether they did in the past, I don't know. I suspect the whole issue of 'lack of ulterior motive'-like winning the game-may have hamstrung scouting in 1955 just as much as it does today).

So even as someone who was very sympathetic to the idea of scouting, my experience was that it just isn't a great organization. Its frankly kind of a dumping ground for homeschool kids to socialize. Healthy life lessons are being taught in sports.

I visited a Boy Scout meeting years ago to volunteer as an adult leader. I saw the same thing. It was mayhem. More like a Chucky Cheese than anything else. I never went back.

Is childbirth more spaced maybe so that the effect described might show up for parents of girls who haven't yet had their second child. For instance maybe a family with an eldest daughter two years apart from a younger son would be immune to this kind of effect in a way a family with a daughter ten years older than their son might.

Becuse I get the stats are what they are but I have observed the effect.

Purely anecdotal, but from what I’ve seen, kids seem to be spaced more firmly 2-3 years apart than they used to be.

Although in this case, when an organization completely abandons it's historic mission and purpose I don't know how they could expect anything else. Who would still find membership in this group appealing?

Why doesn’t it surprise me that the closest Trail Life group to my location in Boston is in New Hampshire.

Maybe some of the difference is that I was there sixty years ago and you were there last year. It seemed like wilderness to me. I never saw any cows. Thanks for the comment.

I was just thinking the other day about the discussions I had in the 80's about the coming out of homosexuals in society.

Not sure why this is news now; already some months ago, I had heard that the Buggery– er, sorry, I mean Boy– Scouts had announced that they would be accepting girls. Since they folded on the ‘gay’ issue, I had been calling them the Buggery Scouts of America.

... the institutional hierarchy taking her nonsense seriously rather than laughing at her and telling her to go away and find something useful to do, as they ought to have done.

Any one with the faintest idea about HR issues would know that in order to administer discipline, the employee/volunteer must have broken a policy. The policy must be clear and unequivocal, and other breaches of the policy must have been consistently acted upon.
In the “sexy mug” case, if the new female boss was offended, but there was no policy prohibiting it, it’s tough titty ma’am (pun intended), unless the volunteer refused a direct order to remove it, irrespective of the lack of policy. That is insubordination. The volunteer ought to have obeyed, then filed a complaint against the boss for harassment in overstepping her authority.

I will say however, that having spent 33 years in Labour Relations, my experience was that the “HR bitch” theme is not fiction, rather fact, in most instances.

One can find a policy to match anything one doesn't like. Have you seen how thick the books are that these people write? That's no way to get any work done, however.

In my case, I'm sure there was some policy I broke, but I didn't even check into that. The guy causing me grief went overboard, because that's the safest thing to do as to not jeopardize his job. Nobody else would have given a damn. The guy acted like the pussy he is. He's since been promoted to a higher level of pussydom.

YMCA dropped Men’s and Christian some time ago. In fact, to apparently cover for it, they dropped Association and reduced Young to a Y. So it’s just idiotically called ‘Y’ which seemingly has no meaning except to those who are old enough to remember when the world was sane, and confuses a number of Asians I’ve met who like to take their kids there: “Why call ‘Y’?” Why indeed. Might as well ask why we do a range of idiotic nonsense to appease leftists, like cheer on transgender 50 yr old men who abandon their families to pretend to be 6 yr old girls, etc.

Why not just go with “They Scouts of America” and go all in?

There is a group called “Queer Scouts” which has been around for at least 25 yrs now. No, you are not reading the Onion.

I wonder if they will keep the name "Brownies." I can see some crazed people suggesting it is sexist or racist.

Q: What’s the difference between a Girl Scout cookie and a Brownie?

A: The length of your sentence.
