From the New York Times:

Examining Trump’s Claims About Representative Ilhan Omar

By Linda Qiu
July 18, 2019

… On Wednesday, Mr. Trump drew attention to rumors that Ms. Omar had married her brother.

“Well, there is a lot of talk about the fact that she was married to her brother. I know nothing about it.”
— in remarks to reporters on Wednesday

Rumors that Ms. Omar had married her brother have been circulating since 2016, when she ran for state representative in Minnesota. No proof has emerged substantiating these claims.

In 2016, Ms. Omar released a statement denying the rumors as “absolutely false and ridiculous” and providing a timeline of her marital history.

According to that timeline, she applied for a marriage license with Ahmed Hirsi in 2002, but never finalized the application. In 2008, they ended their relationship “in our faith tradition.”

State records show that in 2009, Ms. Omar legally married Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, who she said was a British citizen. They obtained a religious divorce in 2011, according to her timeline, and Mr. Elmi returned to England.

She then reconciled with Mr. Hirsi and married him legally in January 2018, a month after she legally divorced from Mr. Elmi, according to The Associated Press. She and Mr. Hirsi have three children.

Last month, Minnesota’s campaign finance board found that Ms. Omar filed joint tax returns in 2014 and 2015 with Mr. Hirsi while she was still legally married to Mr. Elmi. She agreed to pay a fine and back taxes as a result of the amendments to her returns those years.

In 2016, a blog called PowerLine cited a now-deleted post on an internet forum that claimed Mr. Elmi is Ms. Omar’s brother.

In 2018, The Minneapolis Star Tribune reported that Ms. Omar showed a reporter cellphone images of documents from her family’s entry into the United States in 1995. They listed her father and siblings by order of birth, with Ms. Omar listed as the youngest of seven children. Mr. Elmi’s name did not appear in the documents. According to the couple’s marriage certificate, he is also three years younger than Ms. Omar, whose mother died when she was 2 years old.

No mention of the term “immigration fraud” in this NYT account. Clearly, it would be funniest if the man Rep. Omar legally married for the purpose of immigration fraud happened to be a very close relative — Somali family values at their finest — but it’s still immigration fraud if she entered into a sham marriage with a non-relative to get him into the country.

So, did Rep. Omar engage in immigration fraud or some other kind of fraud?

Beats me, but it sure doesn’t appear to have been disproved yet after 3 years.

But, that’s not the NYT’s point, the NYT’s point is that, much like story of how Rolling Stone happened to mistate certain factual details in its “A Rape on Campus” article, the story of Ilhan Omar’s various husbands is all very technical and boring. Why would you be interested in that?

In contrast, here are the headlines on a long new Daily Mail story about this hilarious case:

‘I am legally married to one and culturally to another’: How Ilhan Omar desperately tried to shut down accusations of bigamy amid claims she was briefly married to her BROTHER to ‘commit immigration fraud’ while she was still with her current husband
President Donald Trump suggested Rep. Ilhan Omar was ‘married to her brother’
Reignited an explosive rumor that first emerged during Omar’s 2016 campaign
Omar has failed to fully disprove the claims of bigamy and fraternal marriage

Percent chance that American-by-fraud Omar ends up with her citizenship revoked for her crimes (and/or for Un-American activities)?

    We can wish.

Note that Australia recently expelled multiple members of its legislature for citizenship violations. All those suspected of illegally holding dual citizenship with a foreign country were expelled, even when the other citizenship was never “activated.”

(The usual exception was, of course, made for The Chosen: Jewish dual citizens were allowed to stay in the Australian parliament, while multiple Christian and other dual citizens were expelled. By this point, those people are effectively first-class citizens in our nations; the rest of us, those who built and maintain the nation, are second-class at best.)

  28. As I understand it, she has always clearly been married to and living with one dude (Hirsi).

But, in 2009 she got a marriage certificate for another dude (Elmi), probably so he could get a green card. “Elmi” is obviously her brother as verified by a bunch of his social media posts where Elmi is hanging out with Omar and her real husband and referring to her kids as his nieces and nephews.

So it’s pretty much 100% true she was a bigamist, and married her brother. The NYT sees “no evidence” however.

Powerline gets a big share of the credit for breaking this (hopefully), but the Washington Examiner went through Omar and Husband #1’s extremely extensive history of traffic tickets and further showed that Omar never once lived apart from Husband #1. “24 traffic violations and misdemeanor charges” in just a 6 or 7 year period! And this is the creme of Mogadishu-on-the-Prarie society, from an elite family to first member of Congress.

    From June 23:

“A paper trail of legal documents, however, undermines Omar’s claim that her marriage to Elmi, a British citizen, came during a split from Hirsi. All available evidence suggests that her legal marriage to Elmi notwithstanding, Omar has always been in marital relationship with Hirsi.

Public documents, for instance, place Hirsi and Omar living in a home together in the Cedar Riverside neighborhood of Minneapolis in 2009, the year Elmi and Omar married, and two years before Omar claims she reconciled with Hirsi.

In legal documents, including 24 traffic violations and misdemeanor charges against Hirsi obtained by the Washington Examiner, Hirsi listed his address at a single Cedar Riverside address consistently in 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011. Four minor cases against Omar show that in 2007, 2009, and 2012, she listed her address at the same Cedar Riverside address.

Specifically, local courts listed this address for both Omar and Hirsi in separate traffic violations in mid-2009, the year Omar and Elmi married. “

No mention of the term “immigration fraud” in this NYT account.

I spent some time looking into this before, eg by reading everything I could find that had been published about it (online) — a few points: to some extent it was difficult/impossible to know for sure what happened and why due to lack of cooperation from Omar herself; but her marital history seemed related to immigration fraud and/or student loan fraud; the mainstream media largely accepted Omar’s non-explanations, which usually included charges the questions and whole line of inquiry into her personal life were racist; now that the issue of her marriage history seems to be getting more attention (?), it would be a shame if the people who have been looking into and writing about it for years did not get the credit they deserve.

Yes, thanks for mentioning Powerline (Scott Johnson) — there were a few others as well (eg Preya Samsundar).

As an example of Omar’s non-cooperation, here’s a letter sent to Johnson from a lawyer (with the Jewish-sounding surname of Brandl — ?):

    Dear Mr. Johnson:

I have been contacted by the Ilhan Omar campaign. Their response to your email from this morning is as follows:

“There are people who do not want an East African, Muslim woman elected to office and who will follow Donald Trump’s playbook to prevent it. Ilhan Omar’s campaign sees your superfluous contentions as one more in a series of attempts to discredit her candidacy.

Ilhan Omar’s campaign will not be distracted by negative forces and will continue to focus its energy on creating positive engagement with community members to make the district and state more prosperous and equitable for everyone.”

If you have any further questions regarding this matter, please direct them to me in writing so we have a record of any further communications.

Yes, it’s great to see Scott Johnson finally getting results for his work.

I’ve made several comments here over the past three years noting how the Johnson/Steinberg case against Omar was essentially airtight, and was just sitting out there in plain view, but no major media would touch it.

This case is a testimony to the power that race/favored oppression status holds in contemporary culture.

Omar’s crimes are outrageous, and extremely interesting, even to a casual observer, but she skated along for three solid years while rising to international prominence.

Now let’s see if she is brought to some semblance of justice — or even if she is indicted.

This assume that the list is true. It ain’t. Omar’s real name is not even Omar, it’s Elmi – she (or actually her father since she was 12 at the time) fraudulently attach herself to a different family in order to get in to the US – this is the kind of stuff that Somalis do without any compunction. One of those 7 is her real (Elmi) sister and the other 5 are actual Omars. Meanwhile there were 3 more Elmi siblings (including her brother) who ended up in the UK under their real (Elmi) names.

If Elmi’s name appeared on that list he would have already been in the US and wouldn’t have needed to marry his sister to get in. Duh.

. According to the couple’s marriage certificate, he is also three years younger than Ms. Omar, whose mother died when she was 2 years old.

Therefore Elmi could not be Omar’s brother – her mother was dead before he was born! QED. This is absolute proof – take that Donald Trump!

Except, except… Somalis lie about every damn thing – the important thing is getting what you want at that particular moment (refugee status, your brother into the country, a tax deduction, anything). Tomorrow you may tell a completely different story. So the probative value of Elmi’s (and for that matter Omar’s) self declaration of age on his marriage certificate to his sister is NIL. I don’t even know whether the line about Omar’s mother dying when she was 2 is true either. Maybe that was part of the false story that they concocted to get refugee status. In the case of Somalis, pics or it didn’t happen.

As others have said, the NYTimes is just digging itself a deep hole here. There is too much proof (laid out by Powerline) that Elmi is Omar’s brother. They are going to look like idiots when Omar’s story breaks down, like when they backed Erdely’s ridiculous Jackie story. Some MSM organ with a shred of integrity remaining (maybe the WashPo) is going to break it eventually – it’s too good to leave unpicked. The NYT have drunk too much of their own Kool-Aid and they don’t even realize (until it is too late) that they are digging themselves a hole – they really believe their own BS and are going to be shocked and surprised when it turns out to be completely wrong. Are they really that dumb? Unfortunately, yes. Being committed to an extremist ideology can make you stupid.

The only thing weighing against the immigration fraud aspect of the sham marriage is why a gay who grew up in England and appears to have the right to live there would be so eager to move to the USA, and North Dakota in particular. College in the UK is cheaper than in-state tuition in the USA, so that isn’t it. Probably not welfare fraud, as he appears to be gainfully employed and can write fairly well as seen in his blog.

It could just be that he decided to move to the USA, and while that isn’t too hard for a UK citizen, it still is more work than a fraudulent marriage.

Something that is revealing about the whole episode is that Somalis don’t feel any need to formalize their marriages with state authorities. They have “faith tradition” marriages while staying legally single, and then when the desire to import a relative comes up, they legally marry them for immigration fraud purposes.

While common law marriages are not unheard of in other groups, I can’t think of any that formalize the marriage with a religious ceremony without telling the government.

    Two hilarious points:

    — Minneapolis newspaper was shown cellphone images of immigration papers. Did the Times ask to see the originals? The cell phone images? Why cell phone images?

    — Faith tradition? Sharia? There’s no sorta married status in the US. There’s a bright line division between married or no, and Faith tradition is not an input into it (yet…). Marital status affects estate transfer, medical stuff, taxation, etc., etc., So the law is very strict about what is marriage and what isn’t.

In fact they would laugh in his face if Roy Moore showed them this kind of worthless “proof”. They would be all over this story like white on rice. But any attempt to question vibrant immigrants and their “faith traditions” is inherently racist and doubly so when the vibrant in question is politically aligned with you. And if Trump is against it, you are fer it, whatever “it” is. Who, whom?

The enemy of your enemy is NOT necessarily your friend. Just because Omar hates Jews doesn’t meant that she doesn’t hate you just as much. Even if she is a true blue anti-Semite after your own heart (and she is) that doesn’t mean it’s a good idea to support her. I hope you don’t have to find this out the hard way.

This is stated way too mildly. There is no “might” about it and he’s not a “relative”, he’s her brother.

That’s Trump’s superpower. He can make the NYT support incestuous bigamy, or whatever. If he criticized the Ebola virus the NYT would have to embrace it as “who we are.”

A non-Israeli, whose birth mother was Jewish, at the time of such birth, must have the basic qualification for an Israeli passport; how do Israeli bureaucrats determine who is a Jew?

Folks will often confuse membership in the Jewish tribe with formal, Israeli (dual) citizenship.

Folks also cite dubious, i’net sources as “proof” that someone is a dual citizen.

While in Congress, Bachmann was actually on the path to (dual) Swiss citizenship. Somewhat embarrassed by the story, she stopped the process.

Now that she’s out of Congress, it wouldn’t surprise me to learn that she had re-activated her application.

    Everyone wants to be Swiss.

  73. Muggles says:

One might hope the Daily Mail or some other enterprising journal and reporter would surreptitiously obtain DNA samples from Omar and her alleged first “husband.” Also from other members of her purported refugee “family” to which she was legally attached as an immigrant.

DNA would be conclusive proof or disproof of this lurid hypothesis.

So start collecting those samples now.

Immigration fraud is on thing that can be used to negate any subsequent citizenship. Look at all of those aged Nazi guards who, after living here for decades, were summarily deported and stripped of residency due to claims of mostly minor errors or omissions on their post WWII immigration papers. If those guys can be kicked out, Omar would surely qualify (if facts prove she entered fraudulently.) And if not a legal citizen, she would be ineligible to serve in the US Congress.

Marriage needs to be a civil affair, even for the most religious among us. I made promises to God and my spouse in front of my friends and family, but I still want the civil authority backing up that covenant.

On the Powerline site there are equal flags of the US and Israel

Powerline blog home page — I never noticed the flags (they are down on the right sidebar) — latest from Scott Johnson: DAILY MAIL VERSUS DAILY BEAST — sidebar with flags still there.

I’ll take the bio info re Johnson in your comment as true (although to me Johnson is not a typical Jewish name — ?) — I’ve never looked into Johnson or the reason for his interest in Omar or when it started; I assume around the time she announced her run for Congress (?) — did she make statements about Israel during her campaign?

Anyway, I was only interested in her marital history because of the rumors she married her brother and the fact I was already familiar with the Somali family reunification scandal and suspension.

  76. Trump pointed out that HRC was the original, prominent Birther.

She obviously has a good feel for immigration fraud.

She obviously has good experience with marriage fraud.

What does she say about this story?

Thanks for the details. Of course, if anyone actually wanted proof one way or the other, a genetic test would be easy and relatively inexpensive. Why doesn’t Trump challenge her to do that?

Spain didn’t have civil marriage until the 19th century.

It’s no accident that those churches which argued for civil rather than sacramental marriage now sport rainbow flags.

Omar is not even her real name

It is if her paternal grandfather was named Omar. And there are a lot of Omars to go around in Somalia.

it does not matter whose fault it is. if her refugee status and therefore citizenship was unlawfully obtained, it is not lawful and is subject to revocation.
