Well, no, that’s not exactly what they mean. Okay, let’s try:

NYT: Too many high-achieving white men are dying

Uh … no.

NYT: Too many dead white men were high-achieving

That’s closer …

From the New York Times:

From the Death Desk: Why Most Obituaries Are Still of White Men
By WILLIAM McDONALD MARCH 8, 2018

William McDonald has been the obituaries editor of The New York Times since 2006.

… Many readers legitimately ask: Why are the vast majority of our obituary subjects white men? The answer lies in our not-so-distant history.

Unlike the rest of the newsroom, the obituaries desk covers the past, not the present. Our pages mirror the world of 1975 or 1965 or 1955, or even earlier: They’re a rearview mirror, reflecting the world as it was, not as it is, and not as we might wish it to have been.

And so we are, inevitably, a generation or three behind in tracking the evolution of gender and racial dynamics, among other things. The prominent shapers of society back then, those who held (and didn’t easily give up) the levers of power, were disproportionately white and male, be they former United States senators or business titans or Hollywood directors.

For example, society used to give movie directing awards to creepy suburban white men like Tim Burton, but now our more enlightened society gives movie directing awards to totally different kinds of people, like nongendered Person of Color Guillermo del Toro.

… So why not more women and people of color on the obituary pages? (Why, for that matter, not more openly gay people, or transgender people?)

The larger answer: Because relatively few of them were allowed to make such a mark on society in their own time. Universities may have barred them. Businesses and political parties may have shut them out. The tables of power were crowded with white men; there were few seats for anyone else.

After all, the only people who get their obituaries in the New York Times are the powerful. Nobody ever gets mentioned for their achievements.

There were, of course, women who crashed glass ceilings, blacks and Native Americans and people of Asian heritage who pushed through “whites only” barriers. And their stories have been told in the obituary pages over many decades.

No doubt, we’ll see more of them in the years to come. As time goes on, I imagine that their stories will be increasingly framed not by broken barriers but simply by what they built, unencumbered by the dead weights of discrimination.

In general, a lot of people today feel themselves personally oppressed by the great achievements of the white men of the past. Why were they so insensitive as to accomplish so much?

A crucial question for the future is whether society will work out hypocritical subterfuges to allow white men to go on making achievements, such as by declaring Guillermo del Toro to be a Person of Color, or whether in our demand for equality we just stop having so many annoying achievements.

Here in Los Angeles county there is the murder of Blaze Bernstein by his goy friend. Blaze was a major Jew homosexual (with a name like Blaze) and his case had been getting major loca media coverage for about a month.

Now the kid was 18 and a non-entity except for his backdoor activity Yet the local news treats him like he's some sort of local celebrity. He was already intot he anonymous sex scene as well.

Yet other people are killed every day and they are lucky to get 30 second one shot on the news. But Bernstein got minutes at a time for weeks on end.

Some groups are indeed more equal than others.

Trannies also get the same treatment(provided the killers are straight whites, otherwise they vanish). I remember a case of a local tranny who went from party to party to pick up on guys to do the "crying game" on them. He ended up getting beaten to death. His death was front page news for weeks (and they never mentioned he was a tranny trying to pick up straight guys).
    , @Tyrion 2
Because the population of a foreign country treated the death of an American as the biggest, saddest thing ever. At the very least this makes it an interesting story. Here in Britain we have had much more coverage of the poor bloke who died fighting for the Kurds than our own soldiers in our own Army ever got. It really isn't surprising. One death is a tragedy, many is a statistic and all that.

Sadly progressives today more or less tolerate explicit institutional discrimination against Asian Americans, as evidenced by the lawsuits against Harvard or the likes. I have an upcoming article that I’m hoping Ron will allow me at some point in the future to run that addresses these issues much more forcefully.

One of the great contradictions of modern day progressivism is in its endorsement of anti-Asian racism. Asian Americans, despite their disproportionate economic and educational successes, lack the social and political capital not only of white Americans, but also I argue of blacks and Hispanics. This in some sense makes Asian Americans the single most vulnerable group in American society today. Furthermore, given the prevalence of Sinophobia in the modern day West, the argument should really be that Chinese Americans, who are merely 1.5% of the population of this country, are in fact the most in need of protection, so to speak.

That progressivism would tolerate such vile hate against the most vulnerable and powerless amongst us, really betrays its own ideals and reveals a deep seated and inherent contradiction threatening the collapse of its own ideological foundations.

Please explain why you even want to be in the USA, Canada or any European nation in general. I'm assuming by Asian you really mean North East Asian. If so I am sure you are aware that your people have in China the soon-to-be world's largest economy if it is not there already. Japan is a paradise of high-tech, low-crime and positive life outcomes. And South Korea combines the best of both of the above.

I just don't get why a NE Asian would want to come to a place that clearly discriminates against them, has astronomically higher crime rates and makes life difficult. Even if you were born in the US, I assume you could easily and readily go back to your ancestral homeland and assimilate in no time. I don't understand why highly intelligent people would want to waste away in societies that are rapidly circling the drain while their own ancestral societies on the verge of world domination. Don't you want to get in on this action? Why or why not? Please explain.

This in some sense makes Asian Americans the single most vulnerable group in American society today.

    LOL.

Yan, i tend to agree with you that math IQ is more important for value creation. But it does help to have some verbal IQ if you're going to try and parse the world and make intelligent statements about it. Statements like you just made just come off as moronic--or at best autistic.

    By the "doing well" metric:
Asians--even with all the SE Asians glommed on--come out on top of the American income rankings and the elite groups are up there with the Jews. Blacks and Native Americans are at the bottom.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ethnic_groups_in_the_United_States_by_household_income

By the "you're officially allowed to shit on them" metric:
Flyover country gentile white men--especially if they drive a pickup with a gun rack--are at the bottom. Asians are comfortably in the protected POC bucket just sort of boringly so, without the fizzle and pop of blacks--i.e. no black privilege.

At the very top on one metric, boringly middle on the other doesn't make you "the single most vulnerable". Saying it just makes you sound like a moron.

    ~~
BTW, people who claim "high math IQ" are supposed to be able to do the sort of "mathy" sanity tests about way they say that seem to elude all the great and good in our chattering class.

Take Asians. Hit them all on the head with a ballpeen hammer--Sailer's gap closing modest proposal--until they have SAT scores equivalent to blacks. Hit them a bit again if they are still showing higher conscientiousness and lower time preference. Now they will like blacks and Hispanics and will be entitled to represenation at "Harvard or the likes" roughly in proportion to their population, which would be numbers roughly a quarter to a fifth of what they are now. Their incomes would crash toward black+Hispanic levels as well. They would be in the situation more or less of Hispanics--low performing minority but with black privilege. Is that a better a worse situation? Do you want that deal? Are Asians now more or less "vulnerable"?
    , @AnotherDad
Sadly progressives today more or less tolerate explicit institutional discrimination against Asian Americans, as evidenced by the lawsuits against Harvard or the likes.

Man the f- up, Yan. Go to the "this is library", buff up your verbal IQ and take this up with the Jews who now run those joints.

The Jews didn't just sit and pout in a corner, they relentlessly used their verbal IQs to convince all the WASP goyishe kopfs running those joints that even though they'd built these universities for their descendants it was just plain "unfair" and "un-American" that they not be packed to the gills with--heck belong to--the Jews.

You know the drill here. You want this? You ain't gonna get it with a big swinging math IQ. Put down that topology book, set aside your math brain and start working out your verbal IQ. We're talking flat out "value transference" here.

    , @Wade
Yan, it was quite unfortunate when Ron chose to bury the lede in his piece The Myth of Meritocracy. If you followed the piece all the way through you'd see that white gentiles are being discriminated against much more so than Asians for entrance into the Ivy League. But asians are the ones suing.

Progressivism has ideological foundations? Who knew?

This is the point at which everyone is supposed to remember the very quotable quotation which Steve is want to quote quite often (but not often enough for me to remember) about minorities quickly transitioning from being so powerless as to have protected status to being so powerful as to be unassailable in that status.

Yan Shen's contribution to the conversation about "the national question" is to make apologies for increasing Chinese power vis-a-vis core Americans. That is all.
    , @Tyrion 2
The fastest growing section of the US population is already being given the immense privilege of free riding on generations of Americans' achievements and build up of economic and social capital.

Still, it must grate given the even larger privileges afforded to other free riders.

According to iCasualties, there have been 6940 combined US military deaths in Afghanistan and Iraq from 2001 until the present. If each one had a day where the flag was lowered to half mast at the Capitol, it would require about 19 years with no missed days to give each one of them the same honor. Since we haven't even had 19 years since the first guys fell, I doubt our fallen have been so honored. I wonder how many have gotten this honor that Sgt. Levin received.

Well,Putin seems to have coined a useful phrase: he refers to JWRCs, Jews with Russian citizenship. Perhaps Mr. Levin and his fans should be known as JWACs? In some ways I might admire this guy a bit. To go across half the world to join the Army of a foreign country that you feel kinship for,(Hell John Wayne went to China and joined the Flying Tigers, amirite? In the movies, anyway.) is gutsy and a bit romantic. One wonders abouit his success with the local sabra chicks... But to do so while the USA is fighting endless wars at the command of Israel and JWACs,(Jews with American citizenship) ,is a bit treacherous. For Jews to cry about him is one thing,to lower our flag is an insult so deep its an act of war almost!

  22. This is a weird complaint similar to when feminists invoke the income gap between men and women (Of course wrongly implying that there is a significant pay gap for the same jobs).

They take all men and women into consideration. Yet it is only the last two generations where women have been engaging in work at the same rates as men and among Gen Y, at least, women outearn men. (They certainly have the advantage in terms of degrees)

What do they think their campaigns are going to change the pasts of women in their 50s? Their efforts to change society will effect those younger cohorts growing up not older ones. All their attempts to shift the balance will only affect young men who are infact worse off than young women, not the already established older men.

Similarly demographic history suggests that the people dying right now are much more white. You see a lot of this among SJWs, they increasingly feel like they can nag away history somehow. Like how the wikipedia page of Bruce Jenner refers to ‘her’ winning her gold medals at the Olympics, it’s also the fault of reality that the great men dying from a generational cohort that was 90% white are mostly white. We fixed that, why are old people still white?

Speaking about obituaries and media coverage, why is it Michael Levin received so much more coverage for being killed in battle than the vast majority of other soldiers in this century?

Here is the NY Times write-up on his funeral in 2006.

Here is the WaPo writing about his funeral in 2006.

In fact the WaPo briefly mentioned Michael in another story in 2014, eight years after his death.

Several thousand men and women have been killed in this century fighting for Uncle Sam. Yet most of the accounts of their deaths are little more than a DoD press release.

And why is serving in the military of a foreign nation not considered an expatriating act?

  34. The tables of power were crowded with white men; there were few seats for anyone else.

It seems to me that most of the celebrated white men didn’t have power until after they had made their accomplishments. It was accomplishment first, then (if ever) power. Admittedly, I don’t think like Progressives, to whom whiteness is the penultimate power, surpassed only by Vibranium.

  35. This has more to do with the decline in hard copy newspapers and a graying of their readers. And also demographics of who buys or wants a death notice published. Nobody under 40 reads a newspaper, they get their information on line. In NY, the New York Daily News used to have an obit page that was often 2 pages of agate type.It was considered the “Catholic” outer boro paper, the Times the Jewish/Manhattan paper. And for better or worse black and Latino people not only don’t read the News nor Times nor any newspaper, they aren’t paying for an obit. Today The News’ obit page was 1 single notice. When you went to a funeral home to make arrangements for deceased loved one, it was always discussed. But not any more. Most funeral homes have their own web sites and facebook pages, and local community sites serve the same function.

Another factor is that obits are expensive. My mother died last year and her small obit in a paper for a town of 400K was $300+. I was astonished; I thought it would be $70 or so.

  36. Perhaps the problem is with the New York Times. A comparison with other newspapers around the country may prove enlightening, or maybe just reflective of a desire for a growing revenue source. For example, the Los Angeles Times has a large and growing obit section. How much of that section size is due to demographic cohort mortality for Baby Boomers and others, and how much due to a type of burgeoning memento mori trend?

Vita brevis, tempus fugit, go die already all stale pale males our paper of record seems to demand. The Grey Lady has some ‘splainin’ to do.

  39. This “special section” in the NYT, today, was so bizarre/ridiculous, that I almost fell off my kitchen chair. The white bashing, particularly of men, has hit a new record. White people and black people, but mostly, those nasty white kids, didn’t deliver enough Olympic medals…and crap, Donald just scored high with Korean breakthrough, so, we gotta do something.

All I could think was that the NYT thought: the BLM folks didn’t erupt with intense chatter over last week’s Oscars, despite, well, Oscar so white this year. So, the powers had to atone…this special section was like a conscy. NYT, which has really gone into uncharted, crazy seas, thought making this insert of cool obits was like, a cool thing, throwing a bone to women, minorities, whatever, because Oscar so white, and, well white Christian people irritate them, especially, with the attention to Billy G…whose funeral also, interrupted the “bash white men” vibe.

The funniest thing: Frances’ Oscar being stolen by a person that represents the quota of people she demanded must be on each and every set from now on. NYT really, is the stupidest paper ever. However, keep it up, please! I am laughing everyday! Keep it up! Hate white Christians? – bring it.

There were, of course, women who crashed glass ceilings, blacks and Native Americans and people of Asian heritage who pushed through “whites only” barriers. And their stories have been told in the obituary pages over many decades.

Sadly progressives today more or less tolerate explicit institutional discrimination against Asian Americans, as evidenced by the lawsuits against Harvard or the likes. I have an upcoming article that I'm hoping Ron will allow me at some point in the future to run that addresses these issues much more forcefully.

If Ron publishes your article, will you stop spamming your one-dimensional, fully predictable comments about how bad you “Asians” supposedly have it?

On August 1, 2011, the 5th anniversary ("yarzheit") of Levin's death according to the Gregorian calendar, a flag was flown over the US Capitol in his memory.

Well, some of us are more equal than others, that's why.

I did not catch that they lowered the US flag to half mast at the Capitol. What an honor for an Am….. soldier.

According to iCasualties, there have been 6940 combined US military deaths in Afghanistan and Iraq from 2001 until the present. If each one had a day where the flag was lowered to half mast at the Capitol, it would require about 19 years with no missed days to give each one of them the same honor. Since we haven’t even had 19 years since the first guys fell, I doubt our fallen have been so honored. I wonder how many have gotten this honor that Sgt. Levin received.

  60. Well, Steve, will the women and gay/tranny/Asian/Indian majority-minority males allow White men of infrastructure to continue to ply our trades? They seem to take for granted their electricity, public works, keeping their cars running, their toilets flushing, food growing, trucks delivering their groceries, stocking their shelves and all the other nuts and bolts of First World living. They think the world runs on their own feels. Once they’ve killed off the last White guy, folks need to know there are next-to-no minorities or women doing the hard-power work of modern living. I don’t see them in the manholes, I don’t see them in construction, in plumbing, in electrical, in any sort of infrastructure, only White men. Dangerous for the consumers of all the aforementioned: there aren’t many coming up behind the last of us White Men of Blue Collar Achievement, not nearly enough. And these boys these days, they don’t know water-pumps from slip-joints. Heavens, what will they do, what will happen, when the last of the willing with the IQ to accomplish infrastructure are gone? Detroit, that’s what will happen. It’s happening all over as it is, the country is crumbling, there simply are not enough hard-skills men left.

For women, for Blacks, “Equality” didn’t ever mean sharing the hard work. That was for the White guys and the Beaners. The price, and there’s a substantial butcher’s bill coming due in all our urban centers as we speak, is being paid in crumbling roads, lousier services and bloodshed in the Black regions. Those of the modern psycho-sexual liberal state are forgetting the underpinnings..

Here in Los Angeles county there is the murder of Blaze Bernstein by his goy friend. Blaze was a major Jew homosexual (with a name like Blaze) and his case had been getting major loca media coverage for about a month.

Now the kid was 18 and a non-entity except for his backdoor activity Yet the local news treats him like he’s some sort of local celebrity.

I remember a case of a local tranny who went from party to party to pick up on guys to do the “crying game” on them. He ended up getting beaten to death. His death was front page news for weeks (and they never mentioned he was a tranny trying to pick up straight guys).

Heck, i know the name of--because elite media and Hollyweird have insisted that every American must know and genuflect t0--a depressive, druggie, homosexual college kid killed in some sort of drug robbery.

And yeah, the young man's life was sad and depressing. Homosexuality is sad and depressing. (I wouldn't wish it on anyone .... other than evil genocidal bastards like Robert Kagan.) But why is this kids sad pathetic story more important than all the other sad pathetic stories out there--say like the kid (Jesse Dirkhising) in Arkansas who was groomed, raped and murdered by a couple homos?

Because some people are more equal than others. And we must be made to understand.

He ended up getting beaten to death.

  66. >A crucial question for the future is whether society will work out hypocritical subterfuges to allow white men to go on making achievements, such as by declaring Guillermo del Toro to be a Person of Color, or whether in our demand for equality we just stop having so many annoying achievements.

I think it will be a combination of both, but mostly the latter. Due to decreased social trust and higher focus on “equity” and “welfare”, we will simply see fewer great achievements.

Is Tentrification the wave of the future?

    http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-homeless-toilets-20180221-story.html

In the article above, tent = poverty. But what if that were to change? What if the Tent Economy can overtake the Rent Economy?

What if Americans can be like the Arab nomads in LAWRENCE OF ARABIA?

Richard Florida said homeownership is so over. We are moving into a Rent Economy.

But rents are too high in too many places. So, imagine if people can have tents like the Arabs did. Elaborate and sturdy, good enough for a king? And if they need to another city, they just take the tent there and set it up in some park designated by the state. The modern tipee.

A Tentrified Future might solve so many problems. They say CA leads the US in everything. So far, its tent people have been just a bunch of grubberoons.
But maybe hipsters can change the image.

Now, for security. Maybe a Tent Culture can arise whereby they develop attitude and habits to watch out for one another. Or maybe every tent community will have a locker space where people can store precious stuff.

A Tentrified Future might solve so many problems. They say CA leads the US in everything. So far, its tent people have been just a bunch of grubberoons.
But maybe hipsters can change the image.

Sounds like a good idea. California is already leading the world into the future in so many ways, a modernized nomadism could be another way forward.

    LOL.

Yan, i tend to agree with you that math IQ is more important for value creation. But it does help to have some verbal IQ if you’re going to try and parse the world and make intelligent statements about it. Statements like you just made just come off as moronic–or at best autistic.

    By the “doing well” metric:
Asians–even with all the SE Asians glommed on–come out on top of the American income rankings and the elite groups are up there with the Jews. Blacks and Native Americans are at the bottom.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ethnic_groups_in_the_United_States_by_household_income

By the “you’re officially allowed to shit on them” metric:
Flyover country gentile white men–especially if they drive a pickup with a gun rack–are at the bottom. Asians are comfortably in the protected POC bucket just sort of boringly so, without the fizzle and pop of blacks–i.e. no black privilege.

At the very top on one metric, boringly middle on the other doesn’t make you “the single most vulnerable”. Saying it just makes you sound like a moron.

    ~~
BTW, people who claim “high math IQ” are supposed to be able to do the sort of “mathy” sanity tests about way they say that seem to elude all the great and good in our chattering class.

Take Asians. Hit them all on the head with a ballpeen hammer–Sailer’s gap closing modest proposal–until they have SAT scores equivalent to blacks. Hit them a bit again if they are still showing higher conscientiousness and lower time preference. Now they will like blacks and Hispanics and will be entitled to represenation at “Harvard or the likes” roughly in proportion to their population, which would be numbers roughly a quarter to a fifth of what they are now. Their incomes would crash toward black+Hispanic levels as well. They would be in the situation more or less of Hispanics–low performing minority but with black privilege. Is that a better a worse situation? Do you want that deal? Are Asians now more or less “vulnerable”?

What I don't get is why our Brave New World's measures of achievement and status so closely resemble those of the discredited past.

You have to wonder if white males working for the NYT, go home in the evening and throw darts at pictures of themselves.

They never apply those standards to themselves. A couple years ago I trolled a movie critic who was mindlessly praising the diversity in the new Star Wars sequels. I asked him why he wouldn’t resign his gig in favor of a diverse critic. He replied that he’d be perfectly happy to be succeeded by a person of diversity–when he was good and finished with the job.

That progressivism would tolerate such vile hate against the most vulnerable and powerless amongst us, really betrays its own ideals and reveals a deep seated and inherent contradiction threatening the collapse of its own ideological foundations.

such vile hate against the most vulnerable and powerless amongst us

This is the point at which everyone is supposed to remember the very quotable quotation which Steve is want to quote quite often (but not often enough for me to remember) about minorities quickly transitioning from being so powerless as to have protected status to being so powerful as to be unassailable in that status.

Yan Shen’s contribution to the conversation about “the national question” is to make apologies for increasing Chinese power vis-a-vis core Americans. That is all.

  88. Some trendy nothing from no where gets an obit in the NYT. Because he’s their kind of person. Their criteria for inclusion is whether or not they can virtue signal.

I have never seen an obit on a ‘personality’ that matched the accomplishments, impact, or character of a real person. It shows the shallow nature of the NYT.

I know my ‘deplorable’ family has achievements and members that while remarkable never would make the east coast elites’ notice.

People are getting unpersoned all the time. Only by writing it down and rendering ourselves can we fight this. If we don’t want to be forgotten entirely we’ll have to do it ourselves.

Homeless Texas boy Matthew McConaughey has already made trailer living hip. It's old news, and he's probably moved on, but his Malibu shelter did make it into Architectural Digest and thus onto aspiring coffee tables across America.

    https://media.architecturaldigest.com/photos/58051ece13027a4c2910531c/4:3/w_740/matthew-mcconaughey-airstream-trailer-1.jpg

When I was a boy, my family always summered at York Beach, in Maine. The Libby’s Camp Ground maintains a “trailer park” on a cliff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. When I was a boy, I always thought my future was to retire early and spend my summers in a camping trailer there.

That will not be the case, but it is not at all a bad dream. There are far worse fates than spending your time camping by the seaside.

He ended up getting beaten to death.

Do you mean “Gwen” Araujo? Yeah, that was huge just as you say. But it was up here in the Bay Area.

Because the population of a foreign country treated the death of an American as the biggest, saddest thing ever. At the very least this makes it an interesting story. Here in Britain we have had much more coverage of the poor bloke who died fighting for the Kurds than our own soldiers in our own Army ever got. It really isn’t surprising. One death is a tragedy, many is a statistic and all that.

The fastest growing section of the US population is already being given the immense privilege of free riding on generations of Americans’ achievements and build up of economic and social capital.

Still, it must grate given the even larger privileges afforded to other free riders.

This has more to do with the decline in hard copy newspapers and a graying of their readers. And also demographics of who buys or wants a death notice published. Nobody under 40 reads a newspaper, they get their information on line. In NY, the New York Daily News used to have an obit page that was often 2 pages of agate type.It was considered the "Catholic" outer boro paper, the Times the Jewish/Manhattan paper. And for better or worse black and Latino people not only don't read the News nor Times nor any newspaper, they aren't paying for an obit. Today The News' obit page was 1 single notice.

On August 1, 2011, the 5th anniversary ("yarzheit") of Levin's death according to the Gregorian calendar, a flag was flown over the US Capitol in his memory.

Well, some of us are more equal than others, that's why.

One wonders abouit his success with the local sabra chicks… But to do so while the USA is fighting endless wars at the command of Israel and JWACs,(Jews with American citizenship) ,is a bit treacherous. For Jews to cry about him is one thing,to lower our flag is an insult so deep its an act of war almost!

The Times obituaries (the ones this piece is really about at any rate) are news stories written by Times staff, and the deceased has to have been a person of significant accomplishment.
