From the New York Times:

The Rising Racial Liberalism of Democratic Voters

By Sean McElwee
Mr. McElwee is a co-founder of Data for Progress.

May 23, 2018

In response to both the election of Barack Obama in 2008 and the backlash in favor of Donald Trump in 2016, analysts and commentators have focused mostly on racial attitudes on the right. …

But few have investigated the countervailing trend on the left, the increasing racial liberalism of Democratic voters, which I’ve been thinking about for a while.

But of course Trump voters control the commanding heights of American discourse, such as, uh, Breitbart and certain sub-Reddits, along with a thinktank in the Inland Empire. So it’s only natural that all attention has been focused upon Trump voters as the Prime Movers.

Though Mr. Obama’s presidency ended up being defined in many ways by America’s reaction to his race, he carefully avoided racially liberal appeals during his original campaign, even taking the time to criticize the purported excesses of campus liberalism. Mr. Obama had begun his national political career with a speech at the Democratic convention in 2004, declaring that “there’s not a black America and white America and Latino America and Asian America; there’s the United States of America.” During his 2008 campaign, to give just one example, he turned down an invitation to Tavis Smiley’s State of the Black Union, an event Hillary Clinton attended.

During her 2016 campaign, Mrs. Clinton invoked concepts like intersectionality, white privilege, implicit bias and systemic racism.

E.g., Hillary’s initial response to the BLM terrorist massacre of Dallas cops was to lecture whites on “implicit bias.”

She warned of “deplorables…”

My impression at the time was that current ideological extremism of Democrats on identity politics emerged during Obama’s get-out-the-vote drive in 2012. After all, as the Democrats try to assemble a Coalition of the Marginalized, how do you possibly keep it all together except by demonizing non-immigrant cishet white males to give all your supporters somebody in common to hate?

Since then, Democrats have carried on by turning on each other — targeting Silicon Valley, Hollywood, universities, etc. — since there is not all that much left too loot from Red State America.

This shift in political rhetoric has coincided with an underappreciated trend: the rapid increase in the racial liberalism of Democrats, including white Democrats, which I analyzed in a recent report by my think thank, Data for Progress. The General Social Survey asks a question about the causes of racial inequality and allows respondents to select whether they think various factors contribute to inequality. Two possible answers are “discrimination” and “willpower,” which are the two variables I explore here (respondents could select both if they chose). The first roughly measures whether respondents take a structural view of racial inequality and the second whether they take a more individualistic view of racial inequality.

Screenshot 2018-05-23 14.26.31

Sure looks like it wasn’t Democrats belatedly responding to Trump’s election, it was more like Democrats following their leadership into their post-Ferguson extremism.

As the first chart shows, white Democrats have become much less likely to endorse individualistic explanations of racial inequality and more supportive of structural explanations of racial inequality. In 2016, for the first time since the question was asked, a majority of white Democrats agreed that discrimination held black people back.

A similar trend can be seen in Pew data: In 2014, 41 percent of Democrats agreed that racial discrimination was the main reason black people couldn’t get ahead, a number that rose to 64 percent in 2017. … In 1994, 65 percent of Democrats supported decreased immigration (67 percent of white Democrats), a share that fell to 29 percent in 2016 (30 percent of white Democrats).

We’re witnessing a historically unprecedented shift left in opinions about race among Democratic voters. But is this the result of a change of heart or a sorting process in which racial conservatives leave the Democratic Party and racial liberals leave the Republican Party?

To study this, I used the Voter Study Group, a panel survey that re-interviewed individuals in 2016 who had previously been interviewed in 2011. By examining only individuals who identify as Democrats in both the baseline survey and the 2016 survey, I can weed out the possibility that the shift I’m measuring is due only to attrition. And indeed, on every question in the racial resentment battery, white Democrats were more likely to take the liberal position in 2016 than they were in 2011, often startlingly so. …

America’s big social problem is that there is too much hate in the hearts of white people, especially too much hate in the hearts of white liberals toward other whites.

    @Buffalo Joe

Oh! They certainly do have meaning; much like Pascal’s Jesuit friends complaining that his Jansenist friends did not have the right beliefs about proximate powers.

The meaning is to keep unity intact so as to oppress their enemies.

“White Privilege” is the proximate power of existing as a majority with certain bonds of affection.
“Institutional racism” is the proximate power of describing those bonds of affection.
“Systemic Racism” is the proximate power of continuing those (or any, really) bonds of affection.
“White Oppression” is the proximate power of describing the situation they find themselves in.
“Implicit Bias” is the proximate power as rhetoric to force deference or soul-searching of your target- as an appeal to his or her methodical individualism- as a lateral signal that you are less liberal then they are.

This is the language of the great liberal Hobbes “all against all” put to activity to form a way of life.

    Next comes the Leviathan.

Since the source is Carlos Slim’s Blog and High End Real Estate Flyer, one must assume that the purpose of this piece is not to analyze the Democrats’ descent into insanity on race and a half dozen other things, but to message to their leaders to pull back on the reigns going into 2018. (Generally speaking everything written in the Times is from the worldview of advising Democrats how to be more politically effective and warning Republicans of the consequences of trying to be politically effective).

The House is won or lost in swing districts, increasingly in the battleground of suburbia, where incessant calls to “interrogate your WHAAT privilege” are not well greeted. These are people who can be killed by a thousand small cuts with accusations and insinuations of racism so long as it’s not too obviously an extortion scheme, and so long as their kids don’t have to go to school with a high proportion of blacks or real incorrigibles and criminals.

The Democrats’ chances to take the House and hold steady in the Senate are predicated on their ability to cross-dress as real Americans when mid-term voters start paying attention.

In order for racism to blight the lives of its targets it has to have power over those it would harm. Just where in modern America do ‘racists’ hold the upper hand? Academia? Government? Corporate America? Does it matter if some low income resident of a trailer park holds ‘racist’ views? Even a racist cop will soon run into career ending trouble should he express his views publicly.

OTOH blacks can openly express their contempt for whites but because they do not control the levers of power in this country their attacks can only damage individual targets of their ire not the white population as a whole.

In the late 1960s, early 1970s it was at least as likely that Democrats opposed liberalizing abortion as Republicans did. In certain areas it was significantly more likely that Democrats opposed such. By the year 2000 one could compile a long list of Democrats who were against abortion before they were for it: Kennedy, Gephardt, Dodd, Cuomo, Jesse Jackson, and many more.

  23. Daniel H says:

Democrats are betting the house on this, believing that demographic trends are on their side. It is just as likely – in my reasoning, more likely – that demographic trends will work against the Democrats.

As the nation becomes less white, possibly with a non-white majority within 50 years, even the offspring of today’s virtue signaling Democrats are likely to experience curtailed professional opportunities, economic and environmental decline, financial oppression and a sense of racial alienation. This alienation is impossible to forestall; it’s built into human nature. These erstwhile Democrats will find their way to the white party. Of course they will bring their obsession with sex matters along with them so the Republican party will change also, but there will be plenty of pushback, so they won’t have their way with the party likely they do now with the Democrats. Democrats will be a loser, minority party, comprised largely of angry, seething coloreds with a rump remnant of die-hard white leftists, desperately clinging to a few positions of leadership, who will have to take second place to the non-white majority of the party. Other than technical expertise, there will be little need or room for whites with the coming colored majority in the Democrat party. This is how I anticipate things will work out.

  24. Travis says:
    @Chrisnonymous

millions of white Boomer democrats have died since 2010 as millions of millennials became adults and democrats during the same time period…thus the democrats from 2011 are not exactly the same as the white democrats today. Every year over 2 million white Americans turn 21 and 2 million whites die each year….thus the 50 million white democrats today includes 10 million millennials who were too young to vote for Obama and we are missing another 10 million democrats who have passed away since 2009

  29. @Daniel H

This is also assuming that the demographic trends are going to continue working against whites. Trump has made them real nervous. 10% of newborns are to illegal aliens every year. So right off the bat, around 58% or newborns are still white, if you can curtail them. Trump is working on making life more uncertain – thus they *will* be producing fewer children.

Derbyshire was mentioning how the minority birthrates are falling – with a little economic bettering and white conservative racial awareness, the white birthrate could pick up. Have three children instead of two. Etc.

The Democrats are on the cusp of numerical racial superiority, but Trump has made them nervous. Quite frankly, people around the world are listening to the media, and the USA is no longer such a large immigration destination.

Anyways, non-white superiority is not set in stone. Although, we are walking an extremely fine line at the moment. And Trump is the only hope. Not a great position to be in, but hey, it’s better than nothing. My native Canada, on the other hand, is truly finished I believe.

  30. @Travis

Here is my question – people have been saying for *years* that all the old white people are dying off, and young white progressives and minorities are taking their place. Well alot of damn white people have died in the past 20 years. Yet this supposed calamity has never arrived.

From my experience, whites aged 35-49 are becoming very conservative, and also more racially aware. I’m not sure where the generation Z will fit in. My friends have moved quite right over the past two years – I used to be the only one espousing right wing views and now nearly all of them are. Yet they still fall for the diversity BS. They may be conservative but they are not racially aware – *yet*.

Will be interesting to see how things turn out.

The Democrats’ chances to take the House and hold steady in the Senate are predicated on their ability to cross-dress as real Americans when mid-term voters start paying attention.

That’s why the Democrats have outsourced the congressional races to the Deep State.

    https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2018/03/07/dems-m07.html

One quarter of all the Democratic challengers in competitive House districts have military-intelligence, State Department or NSC backgrounds. This is by far the largest subcategory of Democratic candidates. National security operatives (57) outnumber state and local government officials (45), lawyers (35), corporate executives, businessmen and wealthy individuals (30) and other professionals (19) among the candidates for Democratic congressional nominations.

Of the 102 primary elections to choose the Democratic nominees in these competitive districts, 44 involve candidates with a military-intelligence or State Department background, with 11 districts having two such candidates, and one district having three. In the majority of contests, the military-intelligence candidates seem likely to win the Democratic nomination, and, if the Democrats win in the general election, would enter Congress as new members of the House of Representatives.

  39. Anonym says:
    @Daniel H

I think that’s some good analysis. The process of alienating white voters has been in play for over a decade. It is seen here:

As relatively apolitical leftist whites are boiled off, the self-hating white leftist remnant of which you speak remains. I think that feeds into the curve that Steve shows, at least partly. So rather than the attitudes changing, with the exodus of more realistic white Dems the extreme white remnant comes into starker relief. For those people, their world consists of the hollywood morality tale rather than what they could see if they looked outside and paid attention. And it also consists of a number of our fellow white demographic, for whom the world is the Eurosphere as it was in the 1950s, or maybe 1933. There aren’t many of them, but as a percentage of Dem whites who turnout to vote, it might be up to 10% of their numbers.

I suspect that the Democrats saw that is was possible to mobilize black turnout, however the level of anti-white animus required to mobilize blacks had unintended consequences, such as losing the election for Hillary. Bill Clinton saw this, his wife didn’t.

One finding is that Democrats have been bleeding about 1.5% of White voters every election since the 90s and the trend was observed back to the 80s but at a more modest level.

The margins on White liberals are moving ever inward, first they leave the Democrats and park themselves as independents then as they come to terms with their political evolution they dip their toe into Republican identity.

Plenty to loot left in Red America

Speaking of looting (not really OT):

Baltimore County State’s Attorney Scott Shellenberger says 15-year-old Darrell Jaymar Ward, 16-year-old Derrick Eugene Matthews, and 17-year-old Eugene Robert GENIUS IV are charged in the Monday killing of Officer Amy Caprio.

The three were robbing a house when their getaway driver, 16-year-old Dawnta Anthony Harris, ran 29-year-old Caprio over with a stolen Jeep when she tried to take him into custody.

While they were not directly involved in Caprio’s death, Maryland law indicates they can be held responsible ‘for everything that occurs as the result of that burglary,’ Shellenberger said.

Matthew and Ward allegedly admitted to the burglary when they were interviewed, while Genius initially declined to give a statement. Genius later objected to being charged wit murder, saying he was in the house when the crime occurred and only knew two of the others involved.

Under the so-called “felony murder rule,” Eugene Robert “Einstein” Genius IV has basically admitted murder by participating in a felony (burglary) which got somebody killed.

White privilege = evil white conspiracy.

Institutional racism = evil white conspiracy in specific institution.

Systemic racism = evil white conspirators are so evil, their hate spills out in unpleasant and obvious ways.

White oppression = equals the cumulation of the three above.

Implicit bias = inherent white evil.

All of these terms are used as justifications for collective punishment and/or humiliation. That is all they are in practice.

Crito: we need to act to remediate the institutional racism that is holding Indians back and the white privilege that is unfairly advantaging white people.

Socrates: don’t we already punish individual acts of racial discrimination?

Crito: yes, but it is systemic.

Socrates: is there a difference between systemic and collective in the way you are using systemic?

    Crito:…

Socrates: you are claiming that white people are collectively guilty of a hidden conspiracy to further white people and disadvantage Indians.

Crito: I don’t like the word conspiracy but I suppose…

Socrates: if you switch white people out for any other group you’d be decrying whomever spoke like you as exceptionally racist.

Crito: But it is about power. White people have historically always had the power.

Socrates: again, were I to switch out white for any other group in your statement you’d have an epileptic fit.

Crito: yes…but white people do have power.

Socrates: the power to be collectively labelled guilty and evil and punished?

The NYT op-ed contributor has a point. Race/immigration has become a wedge issue in large part because Trump ran on immigration, and because Hillary’s brain trust welcomed Trump and moved to the extreme left (partly in response to Trump and Bernie, partly because they jumped the demographic gun on abandoning Whites).

Zimmerman and Ferguson weren’t materially different from other media race hoaxes over the decades. It took Trump to complete the partisan shift for liberals on race/immigration.

Sailerites should view this new wedge issue as a best-case scenario. Wedge issues such as guns, abortion and now race/immigration are the only things that can stand in the way of leftist elite hegemony.

the demographic changes take place at different rates in different states

California was a Republican leaning state when it was majority white
    The GOP candidate won California in 1960, 1968, 1972, 1976, 1980, 1984, 1988, 1992
but a decade after amnesty they became a solid democratic state.

it is a simple fact that whites are dying off and America has less white today than in 1980, but as the Democratic party has become hostile toward white people the GOP has attracted more whites which is the reason Trump was able to win the election. Trump may well have saved the GOP but it remains to be seen who will follow his agenda going forward….will there be enough whites to maintain the GOP as a viable national party in 8 years ? or will white death continue to erode the number of whites in America, as the white mortality rate continues to rise each year. More white Americans have died over the last decade than have been born. If this trend continues the demographics of America will be far worse in 20 years time…

This is a natural feature of Leftism. The structure of Leftism is such that it is necessary for followers to follow the Party Line. This is because Leftism is full of inherent contradictions and it is impossible for a follower to reach a correct answer on his or xer own based upon first principles. The only way to get the “right” answer is to receive guidance from the top.

In the late ’30s, the Party Line was first that Hitler was a threat, then after the Hitler-Stalin Pact, Hitler was fine – we should focus on destroying capitalism and then after the Germans attacked the USSR, that Hitler was awful again. The Party’s positions on other matters could likewise shift on a dime. You had to read the Daily Worker (the equivalent of the NY Times today) in order to know what the Party Line was that week and woe betide any reactionary who was not up on the current Party Line.

One of the reasons why Hillary Clinton lost credibility with the left wing of the Democrat Party was that she was somewhat anchored to Bill Clinton’s past (and now considered reactionary) policies. Bill himself, in his heyday, was nimble and lovable enough that he could change course and be forgiven but the plodding Hillary always made her policy shifts seem insincere and calculated (which they were, but in a natural politician like Bill you saw only graceful motion and not the gears clanking and grinding away).

America’s big social problem is that there is too much hate in the hearts of white people, especially too much hate in the hearts of white liberals toward other whites.

The Western Left is angry at working-class whites for refusing to support the Socialist utopia like they were supposed to (though I doubt any of them could consciously articulate this). Commie intellectuals in the 1930s were confident that the Tom Joads of the world were firmly on their side; by the time of the Hard Hat Riot, it was starting to become apparent that the marriage was doomed, and with it all of Communism’s millenarian hopes. This contemporary racial spite is the hatred of a spurned lover, and mass third-world immigration is like the deadbeat boyfriend picked up by a recently-divorced woman desperate for a confidence boost (and the opportunity to humiliate her ex by giving another man his former stuff).

    Chrisnonymous nails it!

Yep, the real story here is how “liberals” today easily change their views in a very short period of time to conform to the current orthodoxy.

It’s not just the ludicrous racial “oppression” stuff, where suddenly–50 years *after* the Civil Rights act–blacks are being held back by insurmontable obstacles from the remanants of the taking-too-damn-long-to-disappear white population.

Within my kids’ lifetime gay marriage went from a completely whacko fringe position, to an idea worthy of airing in the left political press, to serious political agitation, to something that was progressive, but not required orthodoxy (2008), to–just within the last decade!–something every good thinking person supported, to something that only evil hateful people could oppose, to settled law of the land, to … uninteresting … and on to putting mentally ill boys in girls locker rooms!

And liberals follow this–”evolve”–every step of the way. And in fact draw their identity from their lemming like following of liberal orthodoxy. I’d call it a “religion”, except calling it that is unfair to people who have come to have actual religious faith–in established and unchanging relevation–and actually work on themselves to live up to their religious precepts. In contrast, “liberalism” now is devoid of any firmly held ideas, but is simply lemming like behavior following a continuously changing orthodoxy and requires no actually work, just “right thinking”. It can only be described as a “cult”. Just a rather huge one.

Except that that is unfair to people who have sincere,

Black America rejoiced that a 10 out of 12 black jury acquitted him.

That jury was the result of threats by the black community activists.

They informed the Mayor, district attorney, council critters chamber of commerce business & real estate communities that if the trial were not removed from the district courthouse in which the crime occurred to the district courthouse in the blackest part of town a riot worse then the Rodney King riots would happen.

Well, the blacks won that victory. The trial was moved to the blackest district courthouse in town

One Black was acquitted for the murder of 2 Whites

But as soon as the agreement to move the trail to the blackest district courthouse, decisions were made at the very highest levels. Not the political levels but the real estate and business community levels to replace S California blacks with Hispanics as son as possible

    And it happened.

Another good thing is that as black influence declined in S California Jewish influence declines in S California. The Hispanics, Asians and other non Whites can take care of themselves and don’t need Jewish money and leadership at all.

    Not necessarily.

These days many people, on the left and on the right, choose their sides and often choose their opinions based on what side they are on.

A few years ago, almost as many Democrats favored building a wall as were opposed to building a wall. These days it is about 80-20 against.

I don’t think that many Democrats abandoned ship.

    What changed in that time?

A few years ago, one could be a Good Democrat and a Good Liberal and still believe in building a wall. Nowadays it is becoming increasingly difficult for those of us who are both Democrats and believers in the Rule of Law.

Or, to be more concise — if Trump is for it, Democrats are against it.

And don’t pretend this doesn’t happen on the right as well. The only thing more bizarre than the wife of Bill Clinton, who set up the Jordan Commission, running on an open borders platform in 2016 was Mitt Romney running against RomneyCare in 2012. Obama was for it, so Republicans were against it.

I think if you look at demographics there is much less white and black America than in the past.

I disagree. I was in the university in the 1960s. Then, there was the hopeful, common assumption that the only difference between blacks and whites was a suntan. Our efforts toward racial reconciliation were based on that. It was a workable way forward.

Today (post Barack Obama), blacks have made clear that it is also about their African culture, their version of their historic victimization, and their demand for reparations. They might be co-resident in our institutions, but they demand segregation … the kind linked to claims of perpetual victimization and perpetual reparations.

They are in your face until you pay up. It’s become a “pay-to-play” protection racket.

  91. A really interesting survey would be of where white liberals live and the lives they in practice live.

I would be willing to bet that very few live amongst the Joy of Diversity they supposedly embrace. Rather, they live in very white worlds. In Britain a good example is provided by a well known BBC broadcaster Adrian Chiles. In 2003 Chiles write this in the Daily Telegraph :

“ The thought struck me as I was looking through my wedding photos recently: why is it that I have no black or Asian friends? I work with some black people, I socialise with them, but when I looked at the pictures of the 131 guests at my wedding, I was shocked to find that there wasn’t a single non-white face among them. I consider myself a fairly liberal, open-minded chap, so the demographic of my circle of friends was quite troubling. I decided to investigate further, and scrolled down the 99 names in my mobile phone’s memory, to find that there is only one black person on the list – a television producer whom I work with.

“ It’s not that I haven’t come into contact with many black or Asian people during my life. I grew up in the West Midlands, which is home to the largest non-white communities outside the capital. And I now live in Hammersmith, a decidedly multi-racial area of west London. Yet, when Petal Felix, the aforementioned producer, came to visit me to discuss the possibility of making a documentary on the very subject that was causing me such concern, I was horrified to realise she was the first black person who’d ever been to my house. “

They believe Blacks lack of success in America is a result of their lower intelligence not because they are lazy. Bu there are multiple reasons Blacks continue to struggle, lower IQ being just one factor. Blacks also have other traits which hurt their chances and 60 years of leftist ideology in our schools and the media which promote hatred against whites has made the plight of Blacks much worse. Our schools teach Blacks to blame whites for their failures, and go to great lengths to increase their already elevated self-esteem…such a toxic combination produces harmful results.

  94. Travis says:

I would always assume the White category includes the millions of hispanics who identify as white, even when they have a separate hispanic category….only when the White category is labeled Non-Hispanic White can we be sure they excluded the millions of white hispanics i.e. George Zimmerman.

the 2010 census makes this quite clear.

they list the number of white births as 3 million but have another category labeled Non-Hispanic Whites which counted just 2 million whites being born in 2010 (based on the race and ethnicity of the mother) so we know less than 2 million whites were born , because white females often have children with non-whites and when they do the children are never considered to be White.
