NYT: "Highest-Paid Female C.E.O.s" -- No Snickering Allowed!

From today’s New York Times:

The Highest-Paid Female C.E.O.s

There are very few women on the list of top-paid executives — just 13 out of 200 — and their average pay, $20 million, is 9.4 percent less than $22.6 million overall average.

RANK: 14TH [out of all CEOs, male and female]
Marissa A. Mayer
Yahoo
$42.1 million

My old MBA school teammate Martin

RANK: 24TH
Martine Rothblatt
United Therapeutics
$31.6 million

The poor NYT is so PC-whipped by World War T that it doesn’t dare mention what sounds like it ought to be a good feminist talking point: Women are so oppressed in Corporate America that the #2 “female” CEO was — back when I was on a team with him in Marketing Strategy class at UCLA’s Graduate School of Management in 1981 — a Pale Penis Person. (And, “she” may well still be one, for all I know.)

Martin contended with an Israeli fighter pilot for the title of Most Arrogant Man at GSM. Obviously, Martin’s utter lack of feminine traits, his lifelong obsession with rocketships, and the sizable number of children he had fathered with two women were just parts of an elaborate facade he had constructed to hide from judgmental society the fact that he had always felt like a little girl on the inside.

But the important lesson here is that people who pay themselves over $30 million per year get to call themselves by whatever pronoun they feel like and you had better, if you know what’s good for you, just put a respectful look on your face and reply, “Yes, Sir” (or “Yes, Ma’am,” depending on the mood they are in).

“Measuring the value Marissa Mayer’s destroying at Yahoo!”

    http://pando.com/2014/04/18/measuring-the-value-marissa-mayers-destroying-at-yahoo/

[W]e have to distinguish between Yahoo the business and Yahoo the company. As I pointed out a month ago, and as Matt Yglesias and Matt Levine have both just noticed, Yahoo the company is valued at less than that company’s stake in the soon to go public Alibaba. This then implies that Yahoo the business – the media company, portal, startup acquisition machine – is valued at (slightly) less than nothing. When we then consider the asset value of the stake in Yahoo Japan, the corporate cash holdings, we end up with a seriously negative valuation of some minus $13 to $15 billion for that business that makes very good profits.

[A] profitable business is being valued at less than nothing.

Which is where Mayer’s effect on the company comes in, for that negative value of the business that Mayer is running has been increasing since she’s taken the reins. She doesn’t control the activities of either Alibaba or Yahoo Japan and she didn’t make the decisions to get involved with them. But as their value has changed, Yahoo’s business has been ever more lowly valued by the market. And yes, we can indeed call this value destruction, despite the fact that Yahoo’s market cap has kept rising.

And that’s one of the things that seems to be holding back that Yahoo share price. Yes, the company’s about to get a great deal of cold hard cash. But are they going to spend it on anything that will prove to be of value to shareholders? The obvious conclusion from that significant negative value being applied to the sum total of assets is that people tend to think that it won’t be so wisely spent.

So yes, that is value destruction and it’s happening on Mayer’s watch.

Oh no Steve. Don’t you see? Martine’s obsession with rocket ships and lack of interest in dollhouses just disproves the notion boys and girls are inherently different! Martine is in fact a boon for the feminists, once they figure out the spin. The ladies just need some guy to show them how to use the Narrate-O-Matic. In goes reality, out comes pc gruel.

Now we just need to cure society’s trans-phobia, so more Martines can escape their ill-assigned birth genders and women can claim their rightful share of power!

  14. Off-topic,

Razib Khan on Ivy League discrimination against East Asians:

It strikes me as unlikely that Asian American applicants lack extracurricular activities. Though first generation immigrants may come from societies where academic achievement is the summum bonum, they know that in American admissions criteria that non-academic strengths matter. But, you can’t manufacture leadership and charisma. Harvard’s role is to educate and inculcate the leaders of the next generation of Americans. It is the training ground for our natural aristocracy. Can American society actually conceive of a situation where 40% of those leaders are Asian? I doubt it. Asian Americans are not seen as plausible leaders. Especially by the established oligarchs, who would prefer their own offspring to inherit the mantles of power. Asian males in particular exhibit a “penalty” in the dating game. White females perceive them to be sexually impotent (on average), and for better or worse the opinions of white females as to who is a plausible leader in our society is very telling. If American women won’t want have to have sex with them, then why would the broader society see them as creditable leaders?

That’s an interesting question. Transwomen come in two varieties: extremely effeminate gay men and heterosexual guys with autogynephilia (cf Rothblatt and Bruce Jenner). Is there any difference between the two in terms of castration-penis removal-artificial vagina carving rates?Based on the little that I know, I’m inclined to think that the autogynephiles are more inclined towards keeping their male equipment intact, whereas the really effeminate gays are more likely to go under the knife.Cf, for example, Andreja Pejic, a super-duper effeminate gay male model who went the surgical route and is now a post-op trans:

I think something along these lines is a more plausible explanation for Asian quotas than the kinds of explanations offered by Education Realist and others. There’s a social dominance factor that’s important in determining social variables like elite representation.

  17. Of course while women are struggling to get to the top in the left-brained, dopamine-fueled world of big business, there isn’t much mention of the fact they are walking all over men in the softer, more right-brained professions such as PR, publishing, teaching, social work and non-technical academia. I read an Australian newspaper article claiming that 95 percent of PR jobs are going to women so companies can fill their AA quotas.

Where are the feminists calling for affirmative action for less-masculine brained males who can’t find a job in female dominated professions?

The passivity of liberal beta males is the cornerstone of masculine feminism.

  18. Well, she gets a lot of money which will be gone in a couple of generations anyway. (Unless the next generation makes a lot of money, too. Not unlikely, but then again, in that case her descendants won’t need her money anyway.) And she doesn’t really need the money right now. She could have a reasonably comfortable life even if she and her family had to live off the income of her husband alone.

On the other hand, she probably has a lot less descendants than she would have in a saner society, where maybe she wouldn’t have become a CEO, but women would be encouraged to be fertile. And given how all-round good genes she seems to possess, it appears that her reduced fertility is a loss to society. I tend to think extra descendants give people extra happiness in old age, so her life will probably be filled with less happiness than in that alternate reality.

So in all likelihood Social Justice gave her a Faustian bargain.

But my impression is that the few high profile female CEOs like Mayer or Fiorina haven’t been success stories at all. Maybe it’s just because most male CEOs are inept, too, and the female sample size isn’t yet large enough for the few visionary ones to appear in it.

Mayer’s primary area of expertise is user interface design. Her arrival saw many changes in Yahoo’s design. And, it sucks. Yahoo Weather is the prime example. A perfectly conventional and informative page that was lightning fast was transformed into a cute graphics-filled page that has a lot of things but not much of a weather forecast.

Racially pure Asian men on average do struggle to attract White women. But the Mixed Race types who are predominantly White like Keanu Reeves and Dean Cain do sexually appeal to a lot of White women. Keanu Reeves always has a White female love interest in his films whether it’s Winona Ryder, Cameron Diaz, Bridget Moynahan, or Sandra Bullock for example.

I remember when the 25 percent Japanese Dean Cain went on the Fox show “Outnumbered”, one of the blondes on the couch Kirsten Powers complimented him on his looks.

  24. I am starting to think that Steve might be wrong about WWT: I am beginning to think it will turn into CWWTW: A civil war between women and trans-women.

Of course the main advantage of women is that men want to make love to them: that, and the fact that they women can have babies. In every other respect, however, trans-women will probably be superior.

It is not in the interests of women as a gender to have men, who don’t want to have sex with them, being women and beating them in the open market.

I want to know how the Olympics are going to handle WWT in 2016 ……. at least that will take the heat off the armed forces for awhile …..

If Rothblatt and other Baby Boomer transhumanists thought seriously about “living forever” in light of regression towards the mean, they might realize that future generations could restore something like premodern, traditional social standards. People born a few centuries from now wouldn’t necessarily welcome or tolerate current transhumanists’ beliefs and practices like feminism, promiscuity, homosexuality, having sexual relationships with people far outside of your tribe or trying to become the other sex. (The last two transgressions raise the question of whether Rothblatt felt self-loathing for banging and making babies with two different black women. Did he decide to “change sex” to punish himself?)

I’ve skimmed through parts of Rothblatt’s latest book and I found it pretty unreadable. He references Robert Heinlein’s writings in several places, which shows his fundamental lack of seriousness. Heinlein’s literary reputation has already gone into sharp decline, and I doubt anyone will bother to read his novels in another century. It indicates a lack of judgment to build a world view on intellectual novelties without a baseline of experience that comes from testing them in the real world to see if they work.

I’m guessing the people most discriminated against going to Harvard are exactly those rural sporty types from flyover country that would be selected if the stated criteria was true.

In reality discrimination against Asians getting into Harvard will be the same reason it always has been – parents whose kids currently have an advantage trying to preserve that advantage for their kids.

The interesting thing about this premise is that I want some kind of argument that explains to me how one can have “consciousness” or a sense of “I” in the absence of a physical body. I mean, as I am typing this note I am very self-conscious (right now) of my physical being and aware of myself primarily as a physical entity in many, many ways: fingers typing, sounds of dog and baseball game, coffee to my right, the weight and pull of my sweater on my bare arms, etc. What kind of “sense of self” am I going to have when I am split among a few servers in a warehouse somewhere? Will that be like being at ADX, Florence?

  40. Right. I believe the proper homologue would be “clitoris.”

Thing about “Transwoman” as the concept is evolving is that men transwomen are not in fact obliged to undergo the radical circumcision that seems implied. On the contrary, it is apparently no one’s business (not to say that I mind the absence of “oversharing” and “TMI” in this domain) and furthermore, I would suppose that forcing a man who realized he was a woman to having various surgeries would be classifiable as a form of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and if not, I’d like to know why not.

Of course that opens the door for various men (Persons of Penis or POP is probably preferable) to pronounce their womanhood, and even to do with a lack of sincerity. We’ll see how it goes.

To wit, I suggest ‘penised person of pallor’.

The ‘penised’ resonates with ‘spaces’ or ‘discourses’ being ‘gendered’. It also suggests that to have a male organ is an unfortunate imposition for which the bearer accepts no responsibility.

The ‘person of pallor’ part echoes ‘person of color’, and since pallor suggests a deficiency, its use scores important victimhood points.

  67. “But my impression is that the few high profile female CEOs like Mayer or Fiorina haven’t been success stories at all.”

There really aren’t that many female big names in the American business world. It’s kind of odd, actually. It probably takes up a lot of time being both an executive and a high profile media figure like Sheryl Strandberg. Lots of grooming and media spinning to do.

In contrast, this Judith Faulkner of Epic health care data systems is very low profile. She founded her business over 35 years ago but I’m only now hearing of her. It’s a lot of working making a billion dollars; getting nitpicked by other women about your hairstyle after your Today show appearance probably is something that Ms. Faulkner doesn’t find a good use of her time.

  69. According to this chart HP has had three unsuccessful and only one successful CEOs over the past sixteen years. Actually, Fiorina’s share price performance is not comparable to the others, because she came at the height of the tech bubble and so had an artificially inflated share price in 1999, which would have been crushed under the watch of any other CEO. To me both Whitman and Apotheker seem to be worse or at least no better than Fiorina.

On the other hand, it’s interesting that the oppressed CEOs (the ones who happen to be women and the one who happens to be Jewish) appear worse in this chart than the only Gentile Penised Person of Pallor.

You’re absolutely right. I hadn’t really thought about this before, but now that I think about it, every time I have to go out and get new ink cartridges, the only ones they have are HP and I always have to fork over close to $100 for a couple of them. HP seems to have a monopoly on ink cartridges and they really rip people off with them.

Fiorina was hated by both rank and file employees and other executives and board members. She saddled the company with lots of extra debt for mergers which didn’t increase net income. She was also known for being extravagant with company funds and private jet travel while firing lots of workers and pushing heavily for H1-Bs.

Her tenure is widely regarded as having been a huge disaster. She increased debt massively and fired lots of people all in order to acquire another low margin PC maker, Compaq, creating a large, debt saturated, low margin PC maker. After she left, HP decided to get out of the PC business.

  84. Just to crosslink some iSteve posts, Marissa Mayer is one of those high performing midwestern Germanics.

Of course in a sane society she’d be doing what high quality females should be doing–raising a passel of kids (she has only one)–rather than trying to turn around Yahoo, which any number of men could do just as poorly as she is doing.

Women are simply not biologically programmed to try and climb the greasy pole to the apex. And for the obvious reason–there’s no Genghis Khan style reproductive payoff waiting for them. Even if they succeed they’ll still have … 0-10 kids. In fact, it’s a reproductive black hole for them as it wastes time\resources that should be devoted to caring for their children. Rather women are programed to compete for the status, by competing for successful men–and capturing their status and resources–along with their high quality genes–for their children.

Marissa is smart, attractive, accomplished and of good stock. Society would be better if she was busy raising say eight kids.

But, of course this is no longer a sane society. So we have major institutions telling us to do insane stuff like flood our nations with Africans and have smart women spend their time battling up the corporate hierarchy.

Of course of the two–we could recover down the road from the latter silliness, the former is simply the end of our civilization.

  86. All printer companies do this, but HP is probably the least guilty. Non OEM refills from Amazon seem to work better with HP than other companies.

They also make the most reliable laser printers. Go to an office and you may see some HPs that get regular use from the late 90s still chugging away. They have counters and their midrange $300 and $400 printers sometimes make it past 500,000.

Generally they make them in Japan rather than China.

  89. Elites in general are becoming more libertarian. Successful homosexuals seem to be mostly libertarian or mainstream right liberal, elite heterosexuals are more into liberal sexual practices like swinging and BDSM that the majority of the population. If it wasn’t for the threat of being called sexist they would be also be having lots more Italian-style bunga bunga parties. At the same time, they still have a strong class-based commitment to free market economic practices such as free trade, economic immigration, and financial deregulation.

Elite hetero trannies are just the extreme, nerdy/eccentric end of the elite libertarian spectrum.

I still believe that transsexual men are gays who want to validate their desire for straight men by appearing to be female. A male with a big tool would be desirable to both straight women and gays, whether he is straight or not. I have a hard time believing that a transsexual male would be attractive to a straight male, but that’s my opinion. I have a daughter who is a mental health professional. When I bounce these ideas off of her she sighs and says, “Are you reading Steve Sailer again?”

  93. I had the same experience in Singapore, actually. Except that I wasn’t freaked out, I just had trouble believing a woman that beautiful was actually a guy. But he/she was honest, so, I bought her a beer.

I don’t think most straight men would want to have sex with a transwoman (it is conceivable, after all). And it’s a sure thing that transwomen could not have a man’s baby. But in most other competitive environments — which is why I mentioned the Olympics — yeah, the transwomen would probably beat out the regular women.

Having said that, I think for a lot of couples — probably most — traditional gender roles make a lot of sense. Trust me, no one is going to care how important your career was, or how much money you have, when you retire.

  96. I want to know how the Olympics are going to handle WWT in 2016 ……. at least that will take the heat off the armed forces for awhile …..

They’ll do what they are doing now–investigating if there’s an issue. Transexuals can compete as women because they “feel like a girl”, they’ve got to lop it off and do several years of hormone therapy.

Our reigning paradigm of silliness in all things\blank slate, tries to pretend sex is “fluid” or some such nonsense. But if the Olympics truly rolled over and fully bought into this nonsense … then female sports would simply be over–a freak show no one cared about. They’ll find a way to not have that happen, even if offends the reigning paradigm of minoritarianism. The obvious counter tactic is it’s a women’s right’s issue.

Well said Mr. Tor — “Faustian Bargain” is exactly what it is.

This sort of “lean in” careerist feminism has offered women nothing but a Faustian bargain. Sacrificing what is important and makes women (and people) happy, for … careerist pablum.

Women like men, have some sort of desire for status, but programed to seek it through capture of high value man as mate. Feminist careerism is “looking for status in all the wrong places”.

  100. As WWT gathers steam I fully expect to See Op-Eds in the NYT and articles in the progressive press about how the Olympic Committee is transphobic. (There will also be obligatory references to Avery Brundage, Nazis, Hitler, and so on.)

Bruce Jenner will opine on the Olympics issue, and will perhaps do a cover of Helen Reddy (“I am woman, hear me bore ….”), someone will accuse transwomen of suffering from “Venus Envy”, real ciswomen with sweet smelling vulvae will inveigh against the used gym sock smelling transwomen, and ultimately ciswomen will go with the one thing they can do that nobody else can do (babies). Feminists will have problems because they will be squeezed on two fronts: by the transwomen on the one side, and the straight women on the other. Should be fun.

If they tried to turn “born with a vagina” into a woman’s rights issue, that would make feminists appear elitist, uncaring, unfeeling, and uncharitable. It would also be privileged, thus giving the lie to feminism in general. I would expect women to roll over at that point, they usually do when you criticize them.

On the other hand, maybe someone will start talking sense. But I don’t think that someone will be at the New York Times.

    Thanks much, Raekwon.

If you’d like an alternative moniker, might I also submit ‘phallused person of pallor’.

This option has the advantage of featuring ‘the phallus’, which as all of us who’ve been through humanities grad school know is socially-constructed, and hence both more damnable and more potentially malleable (i.e. it can be awakened from its false consciousness and transformed via enlightenment and revolution) than a boring fleshly appendage (which must be physically and messily removed).

The downside here is you lose the jaunty triple alliteration of ‘penised person of pallor.

  102. “which is why I mentioned the Olympics ”

I see no reason for concern. The only things in the Olympics that girls and women really are enthusiastic enough about to watch and to practice enough to win, are the things that allow us to show off our nice figures. Gymnastics, ice dancing, beach volleyball. There won’t be any trannies there.

How could there be? To be an Olympic gymnast requires starting at age 3 and continuing to practice uncountable hours until age 12-13-14. Even if there are any boys who want to be girls (or whose crazy lesbian mamas THINK he does and transition him against his will) and actually go through the hormones / maybe surgery at age 6 and who go on to learn gymnastics, they still won’t have the lithe femininity it takes to look good enough to win.

Would trannies win, say, the women’s weightlifting? Yeah, because men have more upper body strength. But who would watch? What’s the point?

  103. But who would watch? What’s the point?

Well, transwomen would win virtually all the women’s track and field events, for sure. But you make a good point. The only Olympic events my wife likes to watch is the ice skating competition — I think every woman fantasizes about being an ice skater who owns a horse — and the only summer Olympic event I make sure to bookmark is rhythmic gymnastics. What a great event that is. But I don’t want to watch any guys prancing around with ribbons, sorry.

Autogynephilia is a sexual orientation, like homosexuality and pedophilia. Some AGs are super pretty boys, some look highly masculine, although on average they tend to be more masculine than homosexuals. About 15-25 percent of effeminate boys grow up to be heterosexual, so he’s probably one of these.
