Expat, Immigrant, Migrant, Refugee: Why ‘This Land Is Our Land’ No Matter the Label

THIS LAND IS OUR LAND: An Immigrant’s Manifesto
By Suketu Mehta

In almost any other country on earth, Central Americans attempting to reach our southern border would be considered refugees, a designation that would guarantee them protection under international law. But in the United States, they are mere migrants who must, as a result of this label, fight desperately for a chance to cross over and to stay.

Such tricks of language abound in the contemporary war against migration — and against migrants themselves. Is it a border wall or a border fence? Are the teenagers who flee gang violence victims or criminals? Did the chain link separating children from their parents constitute a cage or a cell? “Etymology is destiny,” Suketu Mehta writes in “This Land Is Our Land: An Immigrant’s Manifesto,” his searing new book about migration past and present. The category a person is assigned at a border — asylee, refugee, forced migrant, economic migrant, expat, citizen — is determined by where she comes from, and will in turn decide her fate, and even, at times, whether she lives or dies.

In an age of brutal anti-immigrant rhetoric and policy, “This Land is Our Land” offers a meticulously researched and deeply felt corrective to the public narrative of who today’s migrants are, why they are coming, and what economic and historical forces have propelled them from their homes into faraway lands. We are, and always have been, a planet on the move, Mehta observes. Yet migration tripled between 1960 and 2017, and, with war, climate change and income inequality, mass migration will only get worse.

“In the 21st century, your humanity is defined by your nationality,” Mehta writes. So, too, your mortality. Mehta’s own family immigrated to New York from India in 1977, when he was a boy. In the Jackson Heights neighborhood of Queens, he found himself part of a so-called “model minority” class of Indian-American engineers and doctors, yet this didn’t spare him and his family the indignities of being new (and brown-skinned) in the United States. A teacher called him a pagan, and, during the Iran hostage crisis, a fellow teenager yelled, “[Expletive] Ayatollah,” as he and the only other Indian student in his high school walked by. “We’re Indians,” Mehta replied. “[Expletive] Gandhis!” the kid shouted.

Among other atrocities inflicted on him by whites, no doubt, somebody once asked him, “So, where ya from, buddy?” and a toddler tried to touch his hair. And in a 7th grade a dumb kid tried to cheat off him on a math test.

As reparations for these irreparable harms, all Mehtas, unto ninth cousins, thrice removed must be given visas.

And they deserve reparations and affirmative action!

… Mehta travels back further, to deeper, more distant causes; the global North’s fingerprints are everywhere.

The book makes a convincing argument that contemporary migration is a direct descendant of colonialism. Europeans and Americans stole gold, silver, cash crops and human beings from the places people are now fleeing en masse. People migrate, Mehta says, “because the accumulated burdens of history have rendered their homelands less and less habitable.” Put another way, “They are here because you were there.” (Though one might wonder who this “you” is — the assumed reader of this book. Do migrants not also read?)

Actually, not that much.

“This Land Is Our Land” is, in large part, a case for reparations. …

“For many countries, immigrants are, literally, the future of the nation,” Mehta writes. “The immigrant armada that is coming to your shores is actually a rescue fleet.”

I wrote about Mr. Mehta’s views back in 2017, including this quote of his:

It is every migrant’s dream to see the tables turned, to see long lines of Americans and Britons in front of the Bangladeshi or Mexican or Nigerian Embassy, begging for a residence visa.

  7. MEHTA IS A GUJARATI AND THEY RUN ETHNIC RIGGED BUSINESSES IN INDIA AND INTERNATIONAL HAVALA, MONEY LAUNDERING, ETC.

This man Mehta is a fraud and a conman, who is invading the US and trying to steal land.

I learnt a few things about them from my Indian friends in college, thus:

He is a Gujarati (check is wiki), related to Patels, who run dirty motels where they rent out rooms for whoredom.

These Gujaratis, I found, are a tight knit community of traders.

They sell sugar, wheat, beans, in wholesale at, say, $200 per 100 kilo bags as list price—and it is always out of stock. But if a Gujrati with a Gujrati last name goes to them, they charge each other $100 per 100 kilo bags and give each other credit and bring the bag from the back.

    They hoard and monopolize.

They have double pricing. Two sets of books. They almost never pay taxes. They run an international criminal network called havala (Western Union style, all oral), transferring cash in the millions with a phone call in a minute all around the globe—no reporting, no taxes.

They have been known to adulterate cooking oil with chemicals that caused mass blindness in India. They are corrupt crooks and criminal network people.

Do not be fooled by this conman’s lies. He wants the US to be under the control of the Gujarati international criminal mafia.

Your Indian college "friends" probably came from ethnic rival castes.

When dealing with Subcons, one observation you'll make is this. No matter how much they mouth anti-White rhetoric, they don't actually believe what they're saying. They're just trying to fit in.

Their deepest hatreds are typically reserved for other Subcons of rival caste/language/religion. South Asia is a hotbed of extreme ethnofanaticism, which they bring with them to the U.S.

In general, I wouldn't trust a Subcon of any ethnic background. At the end of the day, they're all money-grubbing opportunists who care only for enriching themselves and their Jati, at the expense of everyone else.

Back in India, they devoted themselves to enriching their petsonal Jati and screwing rival Jatis. Now that they're in America, they persist with the same behavior.

Don' trust Gujratis. Don't trust Pakis. Don't trust Brahmins. Don't trust any of them. At the end of the day, all of them (including your college "friends"), will screw you and screw each other.

  8. How to quantify what is owed? Mehta offers some numbers to get us started. The amount of silver shipped between 1503 and the early 1800s “would amount to a debt of $165 trillion that Europe owes Latin America today.”

One thing that always amuses me about these people is how limited their experience of the world outside of Western Europe and liberal enclaves in the United States seems to be. They seem to think the rest of the world is like some mega-Sweden. The reality is that in most of the world, illegal migrants live on the margins of society, end of story. Illegal North Koreans in China, Bangladeshis in India, and Central Americans in Mexico are not protesting for their rights under international law, they don’t have that luxury. They are focused on surviving. And I mean just that: surviving. They are non-persons, at the mercy of whoever employs them, which often includes some very unsavory criminal types. These various authors/journalists are puppets of Jewish media executives.

The NYT wants to create the impression that among all races, there’s widespread desire to open up American borders and tear down White patriarchy. So they promote various ethnic writers (Hispanic, Asian, Subcon, etc) who follow the party line. They are Comissars of the Jewish ruling class.

The hope is that when White gentiles observe their declining numbers and see how all the ethnics seem united against them, they’ll become demoralized and retreat.

Subcon Comissars seem to be particularly advantaged over Comissars of other ethnic groups. Probably because Subcons are English fluent, verbose, opinionated, and especially ambitious.

Importing foreigners to shoot the natives isn’t a new strategy. Historically, when rulers were afraid of peasant rebellions, they brought in foreign mercenaries and sent them to slaughter the peasantry.

A Subcon foreigner may not hate Whites, but he doesn’t feel any patriotic inclination either. So a Mehta or an Aziz Ansasri is ok with being used as a mercenary against Whites. As long as Jewish media/entertainment elites pay them with wealth and fame, they’ll write anything.

Wrong. Refugees must ask for ‘asylum as a refugee’ in the first country they pass into when fleeing their native land. They do not get the luxury to shop for the destination country of their choosing. (There is other criteria, as well, to determine qualification as a refugee seeking asylum.)

It's a good point. When I think back, way back, I can remember Subcontinent Indians who were actually decent people, and not some kind of angry, vicious fifth column intent on wreaking horrible revenge upon the people who created this nation.

And it strikes me that immigration has become something like block busting back in the 1960s and 70s. The first ones to move in seem relatively harmless. And a while afterward, le deluge. Only we've no place to go.

It's almost like the proverbial frog in the (increasingly) hot water, as many have noted. By the time most people really figure out what's going on, they're old and no one takes them seriously any more. By the time an entire people figure it out, it's way too late.

Some of it isn’t too bad; Brooks gets in a few subtle jabs at the progs about how their worldview resembles religious faith, but the thrust of it is that America has moved away from the foundational story that this is a land where “anyone can make it” to one where different groups are competing over what we will become (this was always the case, though Brooks doesn’t say that). He places some of the blame for this on the multicultural criticism of “anyone can make it”, which is certainly deserved. In fairness to the critics most of what they say is true enough, as far as it goes, it just was never unique to the U.S. and they never say exactly what they would replace our “corrupt culture” with other than pipe dreams and good intentions.

How to quantify what is owed? Mehta offers some numbers to get us started. The amount of silver shipped between 1503 and the early 1800s “would amount to a debt of $165 trillion that Europe owes Latin America today.”

So, Finns, for example, must pay for the sins of Spain?Guilt by association, I suppose..with association defined as sharing the same continent....

and yet when it comes to delineating races then “association defined as sharing the same continent” simply doesn’t cut it.

  41. Jeez dude, go hassle Britain. They were the ones who enslaved India and stole everything. FDR tried to get Churchill to take his boot off India’s throat but failed. 50. The book makes a convincing argument that contemporary migration is a direct descendant of colonialism. Europeans and Americans stole gold, silver, cash crops and human beings from the places people are now fleeing en masse.

The human beings weren’t stolen – at least not by us. We paid for them fair and square. It was the various African kingdoms who engaged in the kidnapping and selling of their own people into slavery. Slavery was one of the chief sources of income for almost every African kingdom dating back to at least A.D. 300.

As for colonialism…what percentage of the people coming to America, legally or illegally, are coming from nations that were ever “colonies” of America? I’m not even sure we ever had any colonies in the European sense of the term.

But of course if the Third World feels like it is being ill-used by the West they are perfectly free to wall themselves off from the West and its knowledge and have a go at it without us. They can start by not allowing us to “steal” anymore of their human beings who, when we aren’t “stealing” them, they are more than happy to part with for free.

This is one of those jumps in logic which I could never figure out. Progs tell us that we stole the land. It is not ours. It belongs to the natives. But the solution they propose is not to give the tribes any more land, let alone all the land. No, the solution is to give the land away to everybody in the world except those from whom they claim the land was stolen.

Where are the tribes on this? If I were a member of the Cherokee nation or some like tribe, I'd be upset that others are proposing to give away what I consider my inheritance to everyone but us. Who are these White progs and their POC allies laying claim to what is ours?

From the perspective of the tribes, there would always be a slight hope of regaining your land if America were still overwhelmingly European. Perhaps in the future some virus for which Europeans are not prepared wipes out their population, and theirs alone. The tribes would get back their land by default. Now that can't happen. There are so many different types of humanoids being imported, and in vast numbers, that such a pipe dream isn't even worth daydreaming over.
  56. Metha says his family immigrated from India to Queens in 1977, joining the future doctors and lawyers from this non-violent migrant class. My family lived in Queens for 10 generations, at least, and I grew up there. I remember the first Indian family moving onto our street, in about 1972. We lived in single family homes. This “Indian family” had 7 men (fathers and uncles) and at least 10 women (mothers and aunts), and probably 40 children in total, all living in this single family home. They lined the streets with their automobiles, making it impossible to find parking any longer. The came and went at all hours. Their extended family came, and when another house came up for sale, it was purchased by another Indian family. The neighborhood completely vanished in less than 20 years, every store now an Indian store or restaurant. I miss my family’s home and our friends and our neighborhood, my father’s business, and our school. All turned into something foreign and strange. No regard for culture or mores or societal norms. It’s theirs now. And I am an unwelcome foreigner in a place my family lived for 150 years, at least, and paid the taxes that built the infrastructure.

Well, the current India PM is also Gujarati, and he’s (also) seemingly got a massive chip on his shoulder about every damned thing — despite being PM of India etc.

  69. The book makes a convincing argument that contemporary migration is a direct descendant of colonialism. Europeans and Americans stole gold, silver, cash crops and human beings from the places people are now fleeing en masse. People migrate, Mehta says, “because the accumulated burdens of history have rendered their homelands less and less habitable.”

As others have pointed out, the USA had nothing to do with your colonial experience. However, in fairness to the British I must ask when you people informed the British of your demand to migrate to Britain, and by extension the rest of the Euro world?

I seem to recall, maybe it’s because the film Ghandi was not accurate, that Ghandi and Jinnah were demanding of the British to leave India and what would become Pakistan. They told the British authorities that they had no right to reign over them and would appreciate it very much if the British left.

I do not recall them adding to that demand that they also wanted the right to move to Britain, much less the USA.

The large exodus from India goes to show that it probably is poorly run. Perhaps the best solution is not for Indians to decamp for the West, but rather for the Westerners to become the rulers again in India and other former colonies who cannot seem to run things properly.

After all, Indians and other former colonial subjects just can’t seem to get back under their former colonial rulers fast enough as we are all witnessing with this great exodus. So it would be more efficient to just send over an administrative cadre of elite Westerners to rule over them.

  70. Mehta is quite right, western countries have plundered and stole from developing countries for far too long. During colonial times, we plundered their natural resources. Now, we plunder their human resources. If it weren’t for brain drain to the west, countries like India, Mexico, Nigeria etc. would have been much richer today.

As such, the West must now make reparations by returning these best and brightest immigrants to their homelands, so they can enrich their own home countries rather than the evil, lazy west. A free one way ticket home for each immigrant should be our reparation to these countries.

“So named because of the behavior of federal (FBI) agents to run sting operations in extremist online communities.”

There’s a guy over at the Z-Blog who’s obviously FBI. He routinely uses inappropriate language for the blog he posts on, such as using the word “brother” in reference to fellow posters; “brother” is the way you’d talk to someone you equate with neo-Nazis, and that’s exactly how the secret police see sites like that one and this one. He also once included what I consider to be an inside joke in one of his posts referencing interrogating the posters, but it went over everyone else’s heads. Even his posting handle could be considered an agency inside joke/reference.

Additionally, despite the geographic enormity of the country and the impracticality and cost involved, he offers to physically meet up with random posters on nearly every thread he posts on. He has goaded people to do this. Likely, the intent is to doxx one of the posters, and then entrap them in a nefarious scheme. Afterwards, they can use the incident to 1) doxx the site owner legally and shut down the blog or, alternatively, turn him into an informant 2) criminally prosecute him as an example to others. Hint: any guy who wants to casually meet up with posters first met on the internet* – any poster he can get to bite – in real life is working for someone: FBI, ATF, ADL, SPLC, Antifa proxy … It should be a rule enforced by site owners that posters are prohibited from discussing or exchanging personal information or making plans to meet up outside of the site.

*The guy had the opportunity to meet up with several posters at a public conference attended by the site owner. I noticed the poster in question apparently didn’t think it economical to meet up with lots of people at once over meeting up with several different people in different locations over a longer period of time. The likely reason is to keep his face out of the press so he can’t be exposed to the group he’s trying to infiltrate.

It’s a good point.

Only we’ve no place to go.

It’s almost like the proverbial frog in the (increasingly) hot water, as many have noted. By the time most people really figure out what’s going on, they’re old and no one takes them seriously any more. By the time an entire people figure it out, it’s way too late.

In the next 10 years, it will be a majority minority country — there will be fewer whites than non-whites in America, particularly Latinos, and all these people are going to be voting. As soon as they start doing that in large numbers, the reign of the whites is over. In some ways you could see it as the last gasp of the old white segment. The epic slogan in the white rallies is “You will not replace us”. I’d get emails with this phrase and, just to f*** with them, I’d say ‘But we already have replaced you, we’re richer than you, and next we’ll come for your women.’ That would leave them foaming at the mouth.

I’ve been living there for 40 years, I’ve never seen the country so bad.

    - Suketu Mehta, talking to India Times in November 2017

Just see the level of toxic hatred this Hindu has for whitey, yet these H(indu)1-B(eggars) cannot stop themselves from coming to America

Try saying that about Hindus in India and you’d be running with your tail between your legs if they don’t lynch you first. As the recent elections in India have shown, they are unabashedly Hindu first in India and whitey last in the west. I troll them relentlessly on desi reddit and see their reaction. They know what they are doing and are perfectly fine with it.

The west in it’s current form must die before something can emerge.

Jeez dude, go hassle Britain. They were the ones who enslaved India and stole everything. FDR tried to get Churchill to take his boot off India's throat but failed. Now Indians come here and lecture lecture lecture America. Remarkably, they seem to have it out for us more than the country that abused them.

Urban Britain is subcon 2.0 now. They’ve literally taken over most of Urban and semi Urban Britain. Some British lawmaker was seen fuming after he was called out on his “The Indians have taken over Britain’ gaff. And he was quite true. You think they are let ya live when they acquire the levers of power in the west?? They are quite resentful, toxic and angry about the humiliation they’ve faced since a millenia. An average IT Indian in the US, apparently “highly educated” has a massive chip on his scrawny shoulders, supports uncontrolled immigration to the US while being completely Hindu first for India. Hypocrites

The failure of the Brexit Party to win the Peterborough by election was undoubtedly due to the Labour Party courting the subcon vote.

In the not too distant future, the ethnic vote will ensure permanent Labour Party Corbynite rule.
  79. When the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan we in Norway got a steady stream of refugees and asylum seekers from the latter country. The Soviets left, the Taliban took over that hellhole and the stream continued. Then the U.S. invaded and the flow came to a complete stop. Thank you, America!

I expated for money and loved it. I never had any expectation I would be treated like a native and I had a great social life.

    Try again pal.

It’s almost like we weren’t talking about Western expats in Gulf states…

    • Replies: @The Wild Geese Howard
Western expats in places like UAE and Qatar outnumber the natives 10 or 12:1.

Why would they waste time worrying about being treated like a native when they could be creating their own little simulacrum of home, just like the Somalis in Minneapolis?

Subcontinental Drift is what happens with too much subcon – Sikh and Hindu and Muslim – immigration. Scamming, cheating, political corruption and factionalism, nepotism, and all the other blessings of diversity. Shame cultures with contempt for the norms of a high-trust society. And, I guess, three more ethnoreligious tectonic plates which will eventually fracture and wreck the West.

  83. @68W58

It’s a real problem that the heroes set up for us to admire are either torn down as racist and sexist or they are like MLK. There is no unifying cultural Hercules like icon of the Campbell pattern to celebrate. So the founding myth has become ‘oppression.’

One can only claim refugee status in India if one belongs to the dharmic i.e. native religions in India. However these same Indians now are coming to the US by the boatloads and are running immigration schemes to attract and pull more of their ethnic clan/caste/jati whatever here.

South Asia is a hotbed of ethnofanaticism and there are umpteen riots and clashes where collective punishment is meted out by the hundreds of thousands on the rival caste/clan/religion etc. Lots of free for all rapes/murders etc while the police just looks on

These people will do the west in, in ways that the typical salvadorean/honduran never will. Most of them are above average in Intelligence, cunning and focused. The last time the US has had such a (((group))) land on it's benighted shores and the effects are still being felt. This will be the final blow to the high trust north west European derived core culture of the US. In a way that is gone already. Urban UK is already finished for the whites and the heartland is also not too far

The people who suffered most as a result of European colonization were not the subcons but the indigenous people of North America, but you don’t see massive numbers of Iroquois wanting to live in Europe. This idiot also discounts the intra-European history of empire-building/colonialism. If being controlled by hostile white nations for centuries is so debilitating that the victims’ descendants should have the right to immigrate unrestricted centuries after the fact, then Poland should be a giant smoking hole in the ground, rather than having a GDP per capita 4X greater than India’s. Also, if his homeland was made so intolerable by the British, then why is it that as the relative level of wealth in his country gets closer to the UK, more Indians immigrate? It’s almost as if one doesn’t have anything to do with the other.

If he wants to know why India is so crappy in 2019, maybe he should look at who ran India between 1947 and now and contrast with Singapore.

With his comments on his dreaming of whitey begging for admission to a range of “shithole countries ” this Indian guy is clearly a “magic dirt ” advocate.

Of course in real life if whitey did immigrate to such places in numbers and could run the place these places would end up as first world countries .This has been the experience of say Australia whose existence was known to many and seen as a very unappealing piece of real estate until the British decided to make it a settler colony .
Also partially true for Sth Africa but there of course whitey just didn’t have the numbers

Brooks will never understand that an aggressor sets the terms of the conflict: our "new" citizens come wielding racial grievance and weaponizing the AA infrastructure. One needs to respond in kind or lose.

It is now openly a who-whom world, and Mehtas are showing their teeth. Years of quiet (and so quiet) resentment and they are ready to pounce. Their sh..thole Third World dysfunction is white people's fault. We have to pay them now, because we made it possible for about 80% of them to be alive.
