Yasha Levine writes:

The Racist Origins of Computer Technology

A century ago, America loved eugenics and was obsessed with protecting its “superior” Anglo-American stock from the threat of immigration. Out of this nativist vortex, the first computer was born.
May 2 Public post

Medium’s One Zero magazine just published my big historical-investigative article about the US census and the racist origins of modern computer technology.

It’s a forgotten history that starts in the 1880s, when the first commercial computer was invented by an American engineer named Herman Hollerith …. It takes you on journey through the racial politics of early 20th century America and ends up in Nazi Germany and the Holocaust, while making a brief stop at Steven Bannon and Donald Trump’s nativist palace.

A century ago, America was in love with eugenics. It was consumed by fears of “race suicide” and obsessed with the need to safe-guard its “superior” Anglo-American stock from the millions of immigrants arriving on its shores. Out of this vortex of nativist fears, the world’s first rudimentary punch card computer was born — built on order from the U.S. government for the 1890 census.

The quote in the picture above comes from a letter Herman Hollerith wrote explaining why he ended up going with a “punch card” design over a continuous ticker tape for his newfangled computation device: it would make analyzing the racial attributes of the population much easier. “The trouble was that if, for example, you wanted any statistics regarding Chinamen, you would have to run miles of paper to count a few Chinamen,” he explained. Racial data was front and center in his mind as he perfected his invention.

Ultimately, Hollerith’s technology would form the backbone of IBM, the oldest computer company in the world — a company that is still ubiquitous in business and government, and is embedded in America’s state security apparatus.

IBM’s origin story, which goes back over 130 years, offers a glimpse into how computers, surveillance, and racist government policies have been linked from the very beginning.

I stumbled on this story while researching the origins of computers for my book, Surveillance Valley. Now, delving deeper into it, I was myself surprised by how dark and nuanced that history is.

People forget what a totally openly fascist country America was before World War II.

Finally, in 2010, President Barack Obama ordered the Census to stop collecting race and ethnicity information on Americans, ending 120 years of Punchcard Racism.

Oh, wait, that didn’t happen, did it?

Ah, memories of Engineering 1 at UCLA in the 1970s, and the 24/7 Holerith keypunch room.

I don’t think continuous tape would have worked for programming. You had one card per line of computer program. You debugged by pulling out and replacing cards. Tape at that time was not random read-write. Magnetic disc media later became that later. Paper tape was only useful for long term storage of static data, like piano rolls.

This story reminds me of a fascinating website that details the use of the same IBM punch-cards to prevent people on the “Indian list” from buying alcohol in an Ontario government liquor store, the LCBO:

Punch Cards, IBM & Statistical Analysis
    […]
Punch Card Statistical Analysis – Punch card technology was first implemented on a large scale in Baltimore to generate public health statistics in 1886, though it became much better known after its popular success in the tabulation of the 1890 United States census.[…]

How Punch Cards and Sorters Work – […]

Tracking Purchasers with IBM Punch Cards 1944-1962 – In 1944, the LCBO changed exclusively to IBM Hollerith machines to record purchases, tabulate consumption, sort individual permittees and keep a record of all permit users.

    Interdiction and the “Indian List”

After the 1876 change to the Indian classification, making it illegal to purchase or possess liquor, all “Indians” and all “Non-Treaty Indians” were conceptually considered to be like those on the established Interdiction List and were dealt with accordingly.

  18. So this Yasha Levine guy was born in Russia but came over here to tell us how irremediably horrible and racist we are. (Apparently not sufficiently racist to send him packing back to where he came from, however. Funny how that is so often the case.)

Y’know, I might almost accept this kind of criticism if Levine were really a Russian patriot who cared about his birth country, which we labored to wreck. But he doesn’t. There was an intermediate step between his Russian birth and his highfalutin American journalism career. He linked up with some (((American))) expatriates in Russia to screw local underage hookers and write about it in their web zine. From there, Levine and the rest of the web zine crew somehow wafted into scarce journalism careers in the US despite their publicly confessed federal crimes, MeToo’s and professed hatred for everyone in the US.

Funny how that is so often the case too.

  19. A span of 70 years separates the Eugenics-friendly 1890s and the civil rights-friendly 1960s. In the Sixties, punchcard computers were still in use on university campuses, where they were instrumental in providing backup data for the Grievance Industry’s sculptors who were already hard at work. But computers only count what humans put in, so nifty facts like the enslavement of lots of British and Irish whites in Early America weren’t plugged into the Grievance Industry’s Algorithms.

    https://www.paulcraigroberts.org/2019/05/03/white-people-will-be-rubbed-out-along-with-their-history/

Since so many people in government and corporate America make their living fostering the Grievance Industry, new greivance groups should be seen as an opportunity to ramp up (real) GDP growth. But white oppressors provide the necessary fictional ogre for the Grievance Industry to rally around, boosting sales, with whites cast as the group that committed the original sin of enslaving other humans—always the master and never the slave. Lots of sales crazes are based on lies or partial truths. The best way to add credibility to your sales pitch is by using irrefutable data, while leaving out other key data, and computers are good at selective sorting of data.

  20. A non-racist country would’ve used continuous ticker tape as the basis of computing, leading to a more just society in which Trysquanderbryen could read at grade level. Or something.

  25. I’m guessing that in public schools, with WWII being so far in the rearview mirror, “facist” will replace Nazi, but racist will always be the cherry on top.

  26. Anon[324] • Disclaimer says:

    The Levine article here …

    https://onezero.medium.com/the-racist-and-high-tech-origins-of-americas-modern-census-44ba984c28af

… is 7,000 words long, and is a fairly decent history of early data processing development.

What it is not is what the title says, “The Racist—and High Tech—Origins of America’s Modern Census: How the tools built to conduct the U.S. Census fueled Nazi genocide, internment, and state-sanctioned racism — and helped usher in the digital age.”

There is a single paragraph in the article that the title is pegged on:

“The trouble was that if, for example, you wanted any statistics regarding Chinamen, you would have to run miles of paper to count a few Chinamen,” Hollerith later explained in a letter. Race was never far from his mind when working on his contraption.

That’s it. The first sentence only seems objectionable, absent further context, for using a word for Chinese that today sounds “problematic,” but which was simply a word back then, just as negro was just a word back then, And the second sentence, “Race was never …” is not supported elsewhere in the article. Did something get cut in the editing?

And the point of the quote was that tape is impractical for small amounts of data, not that cards were somehow just right for racist data, whereas tape would be good for anti-racist data.

I skimmed it, so maybe I missed something.

So in summary, A 7,000 word encyclopedia entry type article has a single sentence inserted into it, “… Chinamen …,” which then is used to bootstrap a title that misrepresents the whole article.

The author obviously agrees with the characterization of his article. I wonder if he found the quote while writing on the topic of data and thought it would help market his work, or whether he found the quote and then researched the whole 7,000 words to create a place to put the quote.

You could write a similar article about the telephone (Alexander Graham Bell: “Oh, and tell mammy to fix me some pancakes when I come home”), the light bulb (Thomas Edison: “My creation enabled many technologies, including the film projector used for works like Birth of a Nation“), and the book (There is a direct line to be drawn from Gutenberg’s infernal invention to Mein Kampf“). And there’s porn, which is the initial pioneering use of almost any new tech.

The article makes clear that there were a zillion other people working on data processing and storage, including people who Hollerith thought were ripping him off, and at the end of the day, the market chose what worked best, was most practical, and was economical. Cards worked well because they were cheap, the keypunches were simple, and the cards were reasonably granular in the amount of data they held.

  38. America is the most successful collective undertaking in history by every measure why shouldn’t Anglo-Americans see themselves as “superior” and take steps to preserve and continue their nation and its works? The vast majority of Americans and their leaders used to think this way and ought to do so again.

  39. A century ago, America loved eugenics and was obsessed with protecting its “superior” Anglo-American stock from the threat of immigration.

“Superiority” never had anything to do with it. Life protects itself, regardless of “superiority” or “inferiority”. Who can forget the words of William Vaile (R-Colorado; Yale 1898):

Let me emphasize here that the restrictionists of Congress do not claim that the “Nordic” race, or even the Anglo-Saxon race, is the best race in the world. Let us concede, in all fairness that the Czech is a more sturdy laborer … that the Jew is the best businessman in the world, and that the Italian has … a spiritual exaltation and an artistic creative sense which the Nordic rarely attains. Nordics need not be vain about their own qualifications. It well behooves them to be humble.

What we do claim is that the northern European and particularly Anglo-Saxons made this country. Oh, yes; the others helped. But … [t]hey came to this country because it was already made as an Anglo-Saxon commonwealth. They added to it, they often enriched it, but they did not make it, and they have not yet greatly changed it.

We are determined that they shall not … It is a good country. It suits us. And what we assert is that we are not going to surrender it to somebody else or allow other people, no matter what their merits, to make it something different. If there is any changing to be done, we will do it ourselves.

Haven’t you read the investigative piece posted above? Let me summarize it:

Computing began within a dark, shadowy cultic organization of racist, misogynistic, homophobic fascists whose sole motivation in life was to twirl their mustaches in exclamation of their superiority while only thinking of how to spread evil upon the globe. It’s speculated that this group has gone by many names: Hydra, Chaos, Cobra, Spectre- this is where serious people get lost within the circles upon circles of networks that these fiends use to hide their master plan.

Starting sometime in the late 19th century, wishing to unleash their unbearable whiteness protocol, they poured their malice into the front line of computational machinery and came up with the “punch card”; so called as a dog whistle to those in the know that they were very much in favor of punching down, and only punching down. They first truly made themselves visible during the rise of the National Socialist movement in Germany; so much so that this group of bigots bet everything on the Nazis, to the point where it’s scandalous that the Allied powers had no technological advantage in which to speak of when it came to advanced computing. It is from this, by the by, that the perjorative concept of computing nerd arose from utter disgust, post war. As the Nazis miraculously lost (thanks solely to Great Patroitic Russia!), the group retreated back into the shadows as to preserve their master plan. One which they still had full confidence in, as it had been foretold to their prestidigitator Charles Babbage that one would arise, with gossamer coif and orange skin, to lead the evilness effort. We’ve arrived at that date with Donald Trump.

…and that’s where we are at with our current day intellectual history.

With what kind of marker? did magic markers exist already around 1970?
Then if, in a sleep-deprived daze, you dropped the deck, you could re-order it easily.

It isn’t really amazing once you realize that this is why these people write anything in the first place. The entire art of academic writing—of which techno-journalism is simply a Low Church derivative—is to take subject X and tie it back to racism (or sexism). This isn’t just a side effect of the Current Year zeitgeist. It is “the point” of the exercise. The reductio ad prejudicium is part and parcel of the modern sophistry. In a very real sense, it forms, for these people, the dome of heaven underneath which they are free to write and criticize as they please, and outside of which is terra incognita and chaos. This also is a factor in explaining the great forebearance with which GoodWhites are wiling to put up with Black criminality. They do not and cannot think otherwise.

They only hate other groups doing this, Dad. For their own group it’s great.

  81. Moses says:

I’ve concluded the desire to undermine and subvert host societies is an evolved trait of certain racial/ethnic groups. Natural group selection pressures led them to evolve these behaviors. I doubt they are conscious of it any more than a bird is conscious of a desire to fly south in the fall.

They need animosity to keep their in-group boundaries strong. What better way than to evolve behaviors that irritate their hosts? It provided much needed “anti-groupism” which is highly effective to maintain group cohesion — like mother’s milk, really, to a population. Best thing is it contains its own feedback loop — behaviors irritate and alienate native population, native population grows hostile to said group, said groups uses it to circle the wagons and strengthen group identity and cohesion whilst blaming the natives.

Nearly every group member I’ve known well defined himself in no small part by his people’s struggle against “anti-groupers” and enemies of the group. Many of their holidays basically are about killing their enemies.

Yet they work tirelessly to undermine group cohesion of other groups, even attacking other groups’ attempts to keep their own nations or even spaces within nations.

A kumbaya world of milk and honey with no “anti-groupism” would be a disaster for said group. They would dissolve as a group in a few generations. No, must have it.

Can’t argue with success. Their strategy works.

The reason that Holerith used cards is that he had machines that physically sorted them. The “computing” that Holerith punch card machines did was physical. Say that you had a stack with census data and you wanted to know how many were each ethnic group. You would run the stack thru the Holerith sorter and you would end up with a separate stack for each ethnic code (say column 30). Then say you wanted to sort whites by occupation (column 40). You could run the white deck thru the sorter again. Then you could combine all the cards again and this time sort them by state of residence (column 38). Etc. You can’t do that with a tape.

  109. One important thing-

There are a lot of stupid articles written by people all over the political spectrum.

Steve has a tendency to take the stupidest articles from the other side of the spectrum. His blog, he can do what he wants.

The danger is thinking “this is how all liberals think” or this is how all xxxxx think.

Some of the articles Steve reposts are on sites with comments sections. The comments section shows how liberals REALLY think. As in, this is completely full of donkey dung.

Of course the point that there is a group of elites trying to ram this sort of thinking down the threats of the masses is valid. And often the ram it down the throats idea works.

These days the great deal of diversity of thought among liberals and among conservatives is being eliminated by the elites and oligarchs.

It may be hard to believe now, but there was once a time when some of the leading advocates of legal abortion were conservatives (such as Barry Goldwater) and some of the leading advocates of banning abortion were liberals, especially liberal Catholics (such as Sargent Shriver).

Believe it or not there was once a time when some of the leading environmentalists were conservatives, such as Richard Nixon. Many conservative hunters called themselves “conservationists”, which sounds less tree hugging liberals.

As recently as 2015 one could still find liberals who believed in restricting immigration. (Barry Sanders among others)

I suppose the point of reposting articles like this is to show how the elites are trying to restrict the way commoners think. We can’t believe in things like science and technology and be a true Liberal or a true Conservative.

It depends. Sometimes the comments are full of ringing endorsements. Sometimes, they attack the writer from the left – the article may seem way out in left field to us but the commenters think it is not left ENOUGH.

Even where the article is attacked, it sometimes serves a function of pushing the Overton window a little to the left. Maybe the first time you see an article advocating say late 3rd trimester abortion or having six year olds “transition” to the opposite sex, you are shocked and appalled even if you are a good liberal. But maybe by the 10th article you decide that it is really not such a bad idea after all and get the message that this is new Party Line and you should get with the agenda if you are a Woke person.

Jacquard looms (which are used to create fabrics with a pattern in them like brocade or damask) date from the early 19th century. Although the looms used cards, the cards were tied to each other to form a chain (actually a loop – the pattern kept repeating) so the cards functioned really more like a tape than a deck of cards. Holerith understood the potential of leaving the cards loose so you could perform sorting operations on them. But he used the cards mostly for data whereas you could regard the loom instructions as a form of programming. But really you were just trying to get the loom to “print” a certain “bitmap” line by line.

One could dispute whether Goldwater and Nixon were real conservatives. Do you mean the later “strange new respect from the New York Times” Goldwater after his presidential ambitions had been dashed? In any event, Goldwater’s leanings were more libertarian than conservative.

And Nixon was, in ideology, primarily a Nixonist. One reason why Republicans were ultimately so lukewarm about defending Nixon after 1972 was that Nixon had directed the RNC to divert considerable financial resources to his own re-election campaign, often at the expense of down-ticket Republican candidates. They did not necessarily view him as a team player.

The original fascists – i.e. Mussolini and his followers – were not particularly racist, certainly less racist than your average white Southerner or upper-class British anti-Semite of the same period. Until Hitler started putting pressure on Mussolini, Jews were welcome in the Fascist party, and the Italian attitude towards Ethiopians was no different than the attitude of any European country towards its African colonies.

Even Nazis weren’t racist in a way that makes sense to Americans – blonde, blue-eyed Poles were “inferior” but Spaniards were fine, Arabs were superior to Jews, Japanese were honorary Aryans, “Jewishness” was treated more like an infectious disease than an actual race.

Americans (humans in general actually) have been racist far longer than fascism has existed, and racism is really a long and proud American tradition.

Back in the 1990s I was living in what had been a mixed Italian/Jewish area in Brooklyn. (Close to and inland from Sheepshead Bay for any Brooklynites)

I read an interesting article about an old Italian Jew in the neighborhood who made a point of talking about how the Italians, some of them fascist, saved his life during WW II.

He was hiding rather openly with an Italian family.

One day the local police chief stopped by the house and told him to pack up in an hour. An hour later the police escorted him to the next town, in broad daylight, in front of the entire town. The home owner was told to clean up all traces of the Jew by midnight.

At the stroke of midnight, the police chief and a German Gestapo or SS officer knocked on the door, and sternly noted there were reports of a Jew living there. They searched the house and found nothing. They went through the town asking people. Nobody saw nothing.

And the Jew came to America after WW II, so he decided he felt very comfortable in an Italian neighborhood with a strong Jewish presence. He decided it was his duty to inform the world how regular Italians had saved him.

Agree completely, my fellow Chris. The Ancestry question was valuable.

The way it worked (IIRC) was that you could list (as in write out longhand) as many “ancestries” as you liked; but the first two listed were counted as one full representative of that background. So, for example, if one person listed Irish, German, Italian, and English ancestries in that order, the Census would add one person to the Irish tally and one person to the German tally.

The question only appeared on the long form of the 2000 Census, which was received by only a fraction of households (again IIRC, 10 percent). But it was very useful in providing a scientific “reality check” to the grandios claims of smaller ethnic groups, which tend to wildly inflate their numbers precisely because there’s no objective measure to provide a comparison.

It’s true that the American Community Survey (ACS) collects ancestry information, but that struck me as a weak reason to remove the question from the 2010 Census. As you say, the most recent check-offs dealing with such issues are limited, and ridiculous.

Feynman wrote about what happened at Los Alamos. The Army had tested a bunch of HS graduate recruits for math ability and sent the best to Los Alamos where Feynman was put in charge of them. Their initial task was operating a bunch of Holerith machines to solve some equations. At first, due to security requirements, Feynman was not allowed to tell them what they were actually doing – they were just supposed to do what they were told and feed a bunch of cards thru a machine. The results were not good – the recruits were bored and clowned around a lot and played pranks on each other, productivity was low. Then Feynman got permission to explain to them a little bit of what they were trying to do (in terms of optimizing a certain reaction, without giving away any atomic secrets) and teach them the underlying mathematics and how Holerith machines could do limited math and the boys then figured out a bunch of clever shortcuts on their own – they color coded the decks, they broke the problem into pieces and ran the pieces in parallel, set up contests between teams as to who could get the most done, etc. and their productivity shot way way up. It was a real example of what happens when you empower clever young white men. Most other groups, even of comparable IQ, would have just been happy to dutifully follow their initial instructions forever.

Jewish scripture states that the Jews are to erase all technology from the Earth in preparation for their Messianic period (I shit you not).

The mythological embodiment of this technology is the Aryan god and “fallen Angel” (both according to Jews): Azazel.

Note that, in Jewish scripture, the gods of any tribe (which the Jews refer to as fallen angels, demons, or both when referencing other tribes) are always a metaphor for the tribe itself. “Fallen angel” merely refers to a tribal god, or more accurately a tribe, who would not submit to the Jews but instead resists them. This is the true meaning of the “War in Heaven”.

The Jewish books are a vehicle for political instructions to themselves over long expanses of time. Any action of, war with, or punishment of any god, demon, or “fallen angel” is a metaphor for inter-trial warfare and Jewish instructions to themselves during such.

Note that “Azazel” (Aryans) serves two functions for Jews:

    1. As the god of the scapegoat. During the scapegoat sacrifice, Azazel is the accuser of the Jews but he is meant to be obsessed with the sacrificed scapegoat because it represents an accused Aryan man and therefore one of Azazel’s people. Because Azazel is obsessed with the accused (symbolic) Aryan man and his sacrifice, the Jews are able to escape blame for their sins. This is the literal meaning of the highest Jewish ritual on the highest Jewish “holy” day of the year: Yom Kippur. The scapegoat sacrifice correlates to the adult version of the “lamb” sacrifice of the first born Aryan sons on Passover. Aries = lamb / Ram = Aryan.

    2. As the embodiment of all technology, which the Jews hold ruined the Earth when Azazel (ie; Aryans) gave it to humanity.

In the book of Enoch, the Jews state that Azazel will be bound and then destroyed completely (both metaphors for the destruction of the Aryan racial enemies of Jews), removing all technology from the Earth.

I find it interesting that Levine’s narrative in regard to computers covers both Azazel roles in Jewish scripture: the “sin” (many would argue the Jewish sin) of racism is blamed on the Aryan inventors of computers (ie: Azazel). This covers the scapegoat function.

The technology serves to shoulder the blame for the “sin”, implying that its existence is wrong and setting the stage for its future removal. This is the scriptural destiny of “Azazel’s” technology, being pushed by Levine.

I would be willing to predict this type of “technology is racist”narrative to increase from Jews in the medium term future. It fulfills a scriptural and tribal warfare edict for them.

The Jews believe that there are seventy gods who watch over the Goyim, the nations. The seventy angels, or princes of the Gentiles are overseen by Sammael, Satan. The Jews sacrifice a goat every year, known as the “scapegoat”, to Sammael so that he will convey all of the sins of the Jews onto the Goyim and mediate for the Jews with god. Sammael sells out the Goyim he is bound to protect for a mere goat and the Goyim are thereby blamed for all the crimes of the Jews.

Jacob give Samael, their prosecuting angel, a bribe on Yom Kippur. This bribe is the sacrificial goat. It is given so that he should not annul their sacrifices. The goat l’azazel has all the sins of the Children of Israel on its head as set out in the verses in the Torah

Excerpts from the book of Enoch:

Enoch 8:1 And Azâzêl taught men to make swords, and knives, and shields, and breastplates, and made known to them the metals〈of the earth〉and the art of working them, and bracelets, and ornaments, and the use of antimony, and the beautifying of the eyelids, and all kinds of costly stones, and all coloring tinctures.

Enoch 9:6 Thou seest what Azâzêl hath done, who hath taught all unrighteousness on earth and revealed the eternal secrets which were (preserved) in heaven, which men were striving to learn.

Enoch 10:4 And again the Lord said to Raphael: “Bind Azâzêl hand and foot, and cast him into the darkness: and make an opening in the desert, which is in Dûdâêl, and cast him therein. 5. And place upon him rough and jagged rocks, and cover him with darkness, and let him abide there for ever, and cover his face that he may not see light.

    6. And on the day of the great judgement he shall be cast into the fire. And heal the earth which the angels have corrupted, and proclaim the healing of the earth, that they may heal the plague, and that all the children of men may not perish through all the secret things that the Watchers have disclosed and have taught their sons.

    8. And the whole earth has been corrupted through the works that were taught by Azâzêl: to him ascribe all sin.”

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Azazel#Enochic_literature

According to the Book of Enoch, which brings Azazel into connection with the Biblical story of the fall of the angels, located on Mount Hermon, a gathering-place of demons of old,[12] Azazel is one of the leaders of the rebellious Watchers in the time preceding the Flood; he taught men the art of warfare, of making swords, knives, shields, and coats of mail, and taught women the art of deception by ornamenting the body, dyeing the hair, and painting the face and the eyebrows, and also revealed to the people the secrets of witchcraft and corrupted their manners, leading them into wickedness and impurity until at last he was, at Yahweh’s command, bound hand and foot by the archangel Raphael and chained to the rough and jagged rocks of [Ha] Dudael (= Beth Ḥadudo), where he is to abide in utter darkness until the great Day of Judgment, when he will be cast into the fire to be consumed forever.

Several scholars have previously discerned that some details of Azazel’s punishment are reminiscent of the scapegoat rite. Thus, Lester Grabbe points to a number of parallels between the Azazel narrative in Enoch and the wording of Leviticus 16, including “the similarity of the names Asael and Azazel; the punishment in the desert; the placing of sin on Asael/Azazel; the resultant healing of the land.”

Daniel Stökl also observes that “the punishment of the demon resembles the treatment of the goat in aspects of geography, action, time and purpose.”[14] Thus, the place of Asael’s punishment designated in Enoch as Dudael is reminiscent of the rabbinic terminology used for the designation of the ravine of the scapegoat in later rabbinic interpretations of the Yom Kippur ritual. Stökl remarks that “the name of place of judgment (Dudael) is conspicuously similar in both traditions and can likely be traced to a common origin.”

    Rabbinical Judaism

The Mishnah (Yoma 39a[16]) follows the Hebrew Bible text; two goats were procured, similar in respect of appearance, height, cost, and time of selection. Having one of these on his right and the other on his left, the high priest, who was assisted in this rite by two subordinates, put both his hands into a wooden case, and took out two labels, one inscribed “for Yahweh” and the other “for Azazel”. The high priest then laid his hands with the labels upon the two goats and said, “A sin-offering to Yahweh” (thus speaking the Tetragrammaton); and the two men accompanying him replied, “Blessed be the name of His glorious kingdom for ever and ever.” He then fastened a scarlet woolen thread to the head of the goat “for Azazel”; and laying his hands upon it again, recited the following confession of sin and prayer for forgiveness: “O Lord, I have acted iniquitously, trespassed, sinned before Thee: I, my household, and the sons of Aaron Thy holy ones. O Lord, forgive the iniquities, transgressions, and sins that I, my household, and Aaron’s children, Thy holy people, committed before Thee, as is written in the law of Moses, Thy servant, ‘for on this day He will forgive you, to cleanse you from all your sins before the Lord; ye shall be clean.”

    Medieval Jewish commentators

The medieval scholar Nahmanides (1194–1270) identified the Hebrew text as also referring to a demon, and identified this “Azazel” with Samael.[17] However, he did not see the sending of the goat as honouring Azazel as a deity, but as a symbolic expression of the idea that the people’s sins and their evil consequences were to be sent back to the spirit of desolation and ruin, the source of all impurity. The very fact that the two goats were presented before God, before the one was sacrificed and the other sent into the wilderness, was proof that Azazel was not ranked alongside God, but regarded simply as the personification of wickedness in contrast with the righteous government of God

    Psalm 69:

    22May the table set before them become a snare;
may it become retribution and b a trap.

23May their eyes be darkened so they cannot see,
and their backs be bent forever.

    24Pour out your wrath on them;
let your fierce anger overtake them.

    25May their place be deserted;
let there be no one to dwell in their tents.

26For they persecute those you wound
and talk about the pain of those you hurt.

    27Charge them with crime upon crime;
do not let them share in your salvation.

28May they be blotted out of the book of life
and not be listed with the righteous.

The Italian Jewish community was very small but they had been there since Roman times and were very integrated culturally (without giving up their religion). They spoke the same Italian as everyone else, ate the same food (except for pork ), wore the same clothes, attended the same schools, etc. So the Italians saw them as their friends and neighbors and most, even Fascists, were not anxious to hand them over to the Germans. Italians also have a very relaxed attitude toward complying with law in general – as far as Italians are concerned, rules are made to be broken. Nevertheless, around a 1/4 of the Jewish community was deported mostly to Auschwitz although many of these were foreign born. This was still a serious loss in such a small community but still it contrasted markedly with the spirited collaboration that the Nazis received from the local population in say Ukraine or Lithuania.

Racism is political power, in-full, because the deepest levels of cooperation only occur between racially unified individuals, therefore racism is politics, therefore racism is the human social experience.

You can no more successfully extricate racism from human society than you can stop people from being human.

It follows that selective anti-racist efforts are efforts to suppress political power for certain groups, and allowing overt racism (ie: for the Jewish group) is an allowance of political power for certain groups.

Anti-racism and all that it implies is the repression of political power toward imperialist domination by racial groups (ie: politically effective and therefore dominant groups). Its the core feature of the removal of self determination; ie: the core feature of functional slavery.

Your “long and proud” phrasing is meaningless. Racism is the essence of human self-determination and ultimately survival. Racism is the “long and proud” tradition of all of humanity that has sought to survive in any recognizable form and rule itself.

If you’re arguing that America’s Anglo-American stock wasn’t really superior and you’re mocking the “nativist fears” of early 20th Century America, isn’t Herman Hollerith a pretty bad example to cite? If the writer would have cited an accomplishment from the time of a person not from “superior Anglo-American stock” it would have supported the theme of the piece. Instead, he tells us that racist motivations gave birth to the computer and that the technology created by a man of “superior” Anglo-American stock would form the backbone of “IBM, the oldest computer company in the world.” The cited example suggests that Anglo-American stock may be superior and that the nativist fears may have been justified.

The leading advocate of eugenic laws was Ernest Hooton, who was a Lamarckian. Hooten and the other leading anthropologists such as Aleš Hrdlička were not worried about blacks because they assumed even if blacks got no additional white admixture, black integration into white communities and leading a white lifestyle would transform them into a generic American type, make them white in other words

The idea was that the US race formed over time by a Lamarckian process such as alteration in the shape of children’s heads (in Boas’s study after parents had been in the US for 10 years) to an American type, even if each immigrant community continued to marry only within itself. Any experimental results that seemed to show Lamarckian mechanisms in action were extrapolated prodigiously (for instance Haldane’s finding parental diet in rats affecting glucose metabolism in the offspring, which we now know was caused by epigenetics).

The eugenics scientist wanted sterilisation or isolation of undesirables. But crucially, Hooton said a long established race (such as the American type) could not be altered by immigration, because the American environment would alter the immigrants’ genetic qualities toward American norms even if they married within their own immigrant community. The genes of every new influx would be modified to the inveterate type formed by the American environment and mode of life. Hence the American type population would subsume any amount of immigrants, because the similar environment would alter the immigrants’ genes. Genetic mixture of the American type population with new immigrants would be overborne by modification of the immigrant genes acquiring the characteristic of American genes. This was not any kind of Darwinism.

The scientists who provided the rationale for eugenics laws being passed were in the mainstream, but not Darwinians. Moreover, they were actually targeting problematic white and populations, such as the Appalachians who had failed to alter for the better despite living free in the US for hundreds of years , thereby showing themselves to be a degenerate and pathological element not susceptible to Lamarckian environmental genetic modification.

There is some justification therefore in speaking of the “American type” of white people. This is near the English, Irish and Scotch types, but is at least as different from any of these as these are different from each other. […]. The Appalachian mountaineers, ranging from New York State to Alabama and numbering as many as 8,000,000, are the “sore on the American Continent,” in an anthropological sense .. something that needs the hearty attention of the biological and anthropological part of America.

The intelligentsia of today are no less believers in Lamarckian race degeneration. They loath and despise lower class whites as superstitious bigots. The more intelligent people are the less they accept a genetic basis for IQ it seems.

    >The Nordicist elements of the party did have a racial hierarchy in their minds, but even Hitler would occasionally say enough of the nonsense and philosophy, focus on prosecuting the war.

The thing that made Adolf Hitler different from his contemporaries on the volkisch fringe is that he regarded ideas as only mere theory and understood everything exclusively from the angle of power. He was the rare exception to the rule in the socially alienated, declassed intellectual (or pseudo-intellectual) in that he practically understand power and how to persuade people, even more rare in pre-WWII German culture with its rampant contempt for practical politics.

Lacking the kind of Abrahamic cultural background that makes this kind of thing effective, the Japanese ended up interpreting the usual stuff about “Jewish finance capital” as “Jews have special money powers, let’s treat them well.”

In the PRC, you’ll find people who will casually talk about the Jewish presence within American finance, the media, etc, in a way that would be considered very un-PC by the SPLC types. But they don’t mean it negatively, like you’d see in the Islamic World. At all. It comes with a tone of respect.

Angela Merkel welcomed refugees to Germany. They’re starting to help the economy.

By Griff Witte and Luisa Beck

Nearly four years after German Chancellor Angela Merkel chose to leave the country’s borders open amid a vast influx of asylum seekers to Europe, a significant majority of the approximately 1.5 million people who have arrived since remain out of the labor force. …

…But after spending billions of euros to accommodate the newcomers, Germany is beginning to reap some gains. The number who are either working or participating in a job training program has been growing, and was at more than 400,000 as of the end of 2018. Of those, 44,000 were enrolled in apprenticeships, according to German business groups. …

Of those who do work, many have taken low-paid jobs at restaurants, in warehouses or in the gig economy, performing on-demand deliveries. …

At a technical school in the Hanover suburb of Garbsen, Sheraz Chaudry, 19, is hoping that success as an apprentice electrician is enough to keep him in Germany. His services are certainly needed: The country’s electrician shortage is so severe that customers can face a weeks-long wait to get one.

In the nearly four years since arriving from his native Pakistan, Chaudry has learned fluent German, made German friends and, along with his classmate Kassim, has stood out as a star pupil to his German electrician instructor.

Pakistan? I thought these were Syrian refugees.

Why do you Jews always project your obsessions onto others? The very concept of Jewishness is based on eugenics. It’s based on the Covenant that God blessed Jewish blood. Unlike Christianity and Islam, which are matters of creed, Judaism is about God and Blood. It says Jews are especially blessed.

And there’s a theory that says higher Jewish IQ had to do with the Jewish Way of Breeding. Richest Jews married their daughters to sons of most renowned rabbis. Thus, business smarts got matched with scholarly smarts.

As for immigration, it’s always been about white supremacism, esp the Anglo kind.
First of all, waves of immigration to the US, Canada, and Australia spelled doom, often genocidal, of the native population. (And Spanish wiped out 95% of natives in South America. Granted, it was more due to disease than anything else.) Still, whites wanted the land and expelled native ‘savages’ whom they encountered. So, Mass Immigration was Genocide in the New World.
And what did Mass Immigration do to Palestine? By UN definition of genocide, Zionism was genocide against Palestinians who were mass-expelled and culturally & historically rubbed out from their historical land.
Also, Jewish merchants fully took part in the Immigration-Genocide in the New World. Key bankers who funded Anglo-imperialism were Jewish. Rothchilds played a big role in Anglo expansion into America and South Africa. And of course, the Jewish Sassoon family were the main sellers of opium to the Chinese, destroying millions of lives(just like the Sackler family silently genocided 100,000s of white by opoiod addiction. Talk about mass eugenics!)

In the Western Frontier, Jewish merchants sold supplies, guns, and ammo to white settlers who were wiping out Indians. Jews felt ZERO sympathy for native Indians, just like Jews see Palestinians as subhuman. Jews didn’t want to stop immigration-genocide to save the remaining Indian community. Jews only cared about their own kind and fully supported white supremacist immigration-genocide that led to all of America being taken from Indians. Emma Lazarus said ‘gimme your huddled masses etc’ but the real people who were reduced to huddled wretched masses rotting in reservations were American Indians. And look at those huddled wretched masses in Gaza and West Bank. In Gaza, IDF death squads mow down women and children. In West Bank, Palestinians face apartheid and are on the eve of being pushed out to Jordan or Syria. If Trump is Hitler, he is most hitlerian in support of Zionism and Jewish supremacist hatred against Iran, Syria, and Palestinians. Anyway, just like Jews provided financial services for slavery in the South, they also served as merchants to further the conquest of American Indian lands. They supported white supremacist immigration-genocide of the Indians. Also, Jews wanted Indians gone because they figured their own kind could come from the Old World and take over America. And of course, Jewish-controlled Hollywood made all those Westerns about how great it is to wipe out the Indians. I guess Jews recognized as similar to what they were doing to Palestinians.

But immigration is white supremacist in another way here in the 21st century. Look around, and notice that Immigration Patterns are about non-whites favoring white nations, esp. Anglo-made ones, as immigration destination. These non-whites admire and envy white made nations to such an extent that they are willing to permanently leave behind their own people and culture to become ‘American'(a template essentially of Anglo-making). Imagine that. Chinese would rather come to the US, marry white people, learn English(and forget their own language), and live as minorities than be with their own kind in their mother nations. Same with Asian-Indians. And browns in Latin America would rather come to America and live under Anglo-made system. The top destination nations by preference for non-white immigrants are all Anglo-made: US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Or UK itself.

And look at Jewish immigration. Jews always nag Anglos of ‘white supremacism’, but Jews always wanted to go where Anglos go and be where the Anglos are. If Jews were appalled by white supremacism and all that stuff, why did they chase after Anglos? Why did Jewish bankers fund Anglo imperialism and colonization? And the greatest Jewish success came on the back of Anglos. If Anglos hadn’t created the US, Jewish power would be far less. Anglos had talent, vision, and better governance. And Jews knew it. When Jews sought to emigrate, they always hoped to move to Anglo-made nations. If Jews really love non-whites and hate Anglos, they should move out of white nations and go to Africa or Asia. But Jews all favor white nations, esp Anglo-made ones. Latin American nations were made by Spanish and Latinos, but Jews don’t much care for them as too corrupt. We are told diversity is so great, but then, why are people fleeing diverse Latin America and India for white-majority nations?
If not for Anglo achievement(on which Jews piggybacked), Jews would not be ruling the world. Anglos were the only people nice enough(and naive enough) to pass the reins of power to Jews who show no gratitude and just vicious animus.

If we judge non-whites by what they DO as opposed to what they SAY, they are white-supremacists. Their immigration patterns show they prefer whites and white-nations over their own. After all, why else would they reject their own nation and people in the dream of becoming ‘American’ or ‘Canadian’? Some will say it’s economic, but why have Anglos been far better at creating and managing nations where governance is cleaner and more efficient?
The reasons are surely cultural and historical, but part of the reason is genetic. Just like Jewish genes give Jews an edge in brains and black genes give them an edge in brawn(and sports), white genetics were better suited for certain tasks.

Non-whites admire Anglo-nations as the best. They also regard whites as the most beautiful and want to have sex with them. Jewish men prefer white women, the ‘shikses’. So many Jewish men marry white ‘shikses’ because, in comparison, they find Jewish women to be ugly(and nasty in personality). So many black men prefer white women. Asian women prefer white men. Race-mixing is also a kind of eugenics to make one’s race look more white. Jews prefer ‘Aryanized’ Jews over semitic hook-nosed ones. In Israel, white-looking Jews are favored over Semitic or darker ones. Asians have plastic surgery and dye their hair blonde to look white. Even in Latin American nations where whites are a minority, most celebs and stars are white or mostly white. Even Hugo Chavez dumped his former wife and married a blonde. One might think that Tiger Woods, being mixed race, would seek out mixed-raced women. No, he only goes after Nordic Aryan types.

The fact is most non-white immigrants or wanna-be immigrants are ‘white supreamcist’ in their preferences. When they want to leave their own people and culture to come to Anglo-made nations, they are saying with their feet, “Anglos are better, they do things better, and we would rather live in Anglo-made nations than in our own that suck so bad.”

I think the reason why Jews like Levine try to shame white pride and white consciousness is because they want whites to be submissive mode to Jewish supremacism, the template that now rules America. All these Wars for Israel, all the aid to Israel, all the condemnation of Jewish power as ‘antisemitic’, all the Hate News against Russia and Iran(because Jews hate them), and etc. Jews and non-whites do feel that white people are most attractive and white nations are most promising(cuz they were made and run by white people). Now, if white people were conscious of their value, they would naturally try to keep their achievements for themselves and keep out leeches and parasites. But Jews and non-whites want access to white nations cuz such are deemed better. Therefore, in order to lower white defenses against invasion and parasitism, Jews and non-whites push this notion that ‘whiteness’ is evil and ‘diversity’ is so great. But if diversity is so great, why are people fleeing diverse North AFrica for Europe? Or fleeing ultra-diverse India and Latin America for whiter nations? Hmm. Why did Jewish immigrants favor whiter US over brown Latin America for immigration destination? Jewish immigrants were white-supremacist or white-preferist in their immigration preferences.

If Jews really hate Anglos, just leave Anglo-made nations. If Jews love non-whites and people of color, they should all move to India, Africa, or nations like Bolivia. But Jews always chose white-nations, esp Anglo ones, as top destination of immigration. And when Anglos were wiping out Indians, Jews didn’t protest such white supremacism. Jews fully took part it. Jews need to look in the mirror. Jewish identity is about supremacy. The Chosen People. And higher Jewish IQ owes to selective breeding of merchants and scholars. And Jews didn’t care one iota about Chinese who died of opium addiction. Jews profited from it, just like Jews raped and plundered Russia in the 90s, leading to deaths of millions.

Jews need to get off the high horse. Stop projecting THEIR hatred and supremacism onto others.

If that foundation occurred before 1945 it is child’s play to find statements by the founders that are unacceptable to modern ears – because everyone believed such things back then. For example, eugenics was so popular among educated people that it was supported even by such socialist luminaries such as H. G. Wells and J. M. Keynes.

It is a pity that Levine’s twisted and pseudo-intellectual historiography goes unchallenged, particularly when it is used to support (and appears to be motivated by) the toxic, racist ideology of anti-gentilism.

I think Nixon came closest to a Disraeli style Tory by temperament and inclination, if a highly Americanized one with the resulting Whiggish streak that he could never fully shake off. He certainly saw himself that way. In late 1972, when he was at the height of his power and needed to pander less than any other time in his life, that was who he cited in the post-election interviews.

So he was conservative, IMO, but in the old-fashioned sense of the word: meaning inherently anti-ideological (as a counterpose to the realm of new ideas of how the world works, which is historically the domain of liberals), focused on realistically accepting human nature for what it is, and stressing the need for order, stability, and if absolutely necessary, gradual, institutional change. To say that this clashes a little with American notions of what is conservative, at least after the Cold War, is a bit of an understatement.

Although the article doesn’t go into depth, the Nazis later on made extensive use of Hollerith (later IBM) equipment to carry out their policies – this has been extensively written about elsewhere. For that matter, the Americans used punch card machines to help solve some of the implosion equations needed to build the plutonium bomb that incinerated Nagasaki. But generally speaking technology is neutral – you can use airplanes as weapons or you can use them to carry deliveries of vaccines. You can use a punch card machine to keep track of pensions for the elderly or to round up your political opponents. Humans are what make a technology good or evil. And ever since the first rock, some humans look at any object and their first thought is, “How can I use this to kill my enemies in the other tribe?”

Just as the article doesn’t really support the premise that punch cards are inherently racist, it also doesn’t support the premise that all Joos are evil because the author’s name is Levine. Even though both the Germans and the Russians had been terrible to the people there, my wife’s grandfather took in the soldier. He let the man hide in the house, and then he helped him get to the border and out of the country.

After the war, the German man contacted my wife’s grandfather and offered to sponsor him, to bring him to Germany for what would have been a better life. Grandfather declined the offer, and went on to father my mother-in-law. He lived into my wife’s teen years, becoming a big part of her life. I’ve seen her cry when she talks about him.

She says he taught her this simple lesson: “There are good people and bad people, but it has nothing to do with where they come from.”

It was during that same war that my wife’s other grandfather witnessed his own father being lined up against his church with other villagers and then shot by Soviet soldiers.

It turns out that American Left’s espousal of “Free Speech”, like their opposition to “blacklisting”, was really a who-whom thing and not a matter of principle at all. They were not in favor of free speech in general or opposed to blacklisting in general, they were in favor of free speech for THEMSELVES and opposed to blacklisting of THEMSELVES. When they were the weaker party, they tried to make it sound as if they were acting on noble and general principles but as soon as they were in power they had no problem with discarding these principles.

Last year I heard an interview with the widow of Mario Savio, who was the leader of the Berkeley Free Speech Movement. She did a great job of twisting herself into a pretzel explaining why “Free Speech” didn’t really mean free speech for people who were not leftists.

This is a truly moving story.

There was lots of good and bad on all sides in a war, but the results are far more bad than good.

My grad school research advisor was married to a German woman from right by the border with Switzerland. They risked their lives helping Jews escape to Switzerland. They still didn’t like to talk about it after the war.

I have heard some true horror stories and some wonderful escape stories. A Chinese friend of mine told me that when the Japanese went from village to village looking for girls for “entertainment” or “comfort “, her grandmother hid in an oven all day until the danger had passed. Hey good looking, whatcha got cooking?

As for the horror stories, my mother knew that when my grandfather came back from the Battle of Okinawa he was suddenly a pacifist. He never talked about it to her. One time my grandfather told me a few stories. My mother is 90 years old and doesn’t want to hear these stories ever.

My wife’s parents both were on the run most of the war. One time some people offered to help her grandparents by carrying the youngest kids across a border for them. When they got to the other side, the people had disappeared with their kids, never to be seen again.

So in war time sometimes the one who should be an enemy is your best friend and the one who should be your friend is your worst enemy.

One day in college, I was riding a local bus next to campus when an old man got on and sat down by me. He was bouncing with joy.

We smiled at each other and he began telling me why he was so happy. He had just learned that he had been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. I congratulated him and asked him what for. He explained that he had helped some people escape somewhere. I don’t remember the details, but he got them out of a country during WWII and saved their lives.

In a way, the details don’t really matter; his good work and humanity does.

He was affiliated with the university and had just come from there. I knew little about Prize nominations then, and he explained to me that he doubted very much that he would win. He was just honored and thrilled to be nominated. He didn’t win.

You just reminded me of someone else’s life story. When I was publishing a zine in Boulder, I included some surrealist stories from an old local man I had met. He was a Jew who escaped into Switzerland. He even mentioned being on skis at one point, getting through the Alps.

He had been a small part of the art scene between the wars, had known some of the famous ones, and had even published his own magazine. My favorite detail is that he had lunch with Guillaume Apollinaire.

When I met him, he was retired from his job as a draftsman for an aerospace company. As we would sit and talk, he would have the waiter keep coming back and pouring more coffee into his cappuccino. He liked to sit at a cafe on Pearl Street like a European.

You are overreacting. I just wanted to make the point (which Paleo Liberal makes) that in wartime (especially) things are not always what they seem to be. People who seem good might really be evil and vice versa, so any “feelgood” story might really have an O’Henry twist to it. Read The English Patient.

My uncle spent the war hiding from the Germans in the Polish countryside. The people who helped him the most were people who were comfortable being on the wrong side of the law – i.e. criminals and the people who were most dangerous to him were fine upstanding citizens. In a war, everything is topsy-turvy.

TBH, chances are high that the German soldier was not a war criminal but just some poor schnook caught up in the war machine. But after the war, the Catholic Church really did help a bunch of bona fide Nazi war criminals escape justice and reach South America.

As far as the Italian Jews in Paleo Liberal’s story go, they were the lifelong friends and neighbors of their non-Jewish comrades so of course they knew who they were protecting.

My grandfather-in-law was not a criminal and was not the kind of person “comfortable on the wrong side of the law.” His own country was under attack from two sides that had nothing to do with “the law” in his land. He saved one invading soldier from other invading soldiers.

… after the war, the Catholic Church really did help a bunch of bona fide Nazi war criminals escape justice…

What, in God’s name, does that have to do with this? My wife’s grandfather, a Protestant, saved someone DURING the war. Now, you tell me, genius, how can there be a bonafide “war criminal” escaping the foreign, invading, Soviet army DURING the war? Even if he had been accused of something by the Soviet army, do you want us to believe whatever they might have deemed justice, on the fly, during their invasion of Transylvania?

False equivalency and therefore fallacious rhetoric. Long winded admonishments full of fallacy are not compelling retorts.

You appeal to sympathy for the Jewish individual personality as a cover for the belief system. Its typical naXalt bullshit, except worse than when used for Blacks because it attempts to defend not individual choice but a formal and man-made belief system for which individuals absolutely have a choice in association.

We’re used to that approach and so you should not be surprised that it doesn’t get traction here. You use the foundation of the defense of the individual Jewish personality (a defense that is too broad to have meaning, mind you) to imply that anti-semitism (a defense of the belief system) is bad. Sorry, no dice. Your latter logic does not follow the former.

There are plenty of good individual Jews at the level of their every day personality, but those individual Jews nevertheless believe in and support a wholly genocidal system that holds us in contempt and would want to see us subverted and destroyed. The evidence for which has been plenty documented on this website in both articles and comments sections.

But this didn’t stop numerous commenters from going off on anti-Semitic rants,

There is absolutely nothing wrong with antisemitism. Its a defense against those who would see others subverted and destroyed, as is plenty documented in the Jewish texts and in summaries elsewhere. Antisemitism is a defense of humanity, but not how Jews see it because Judaism views only Jews as human. Per their texts.

Again, your arguments are baseless because this time they rely on an assumed moral foundation that does not exist in reality (you assume that antisemitism is bad).

The modern style on both the Left and the Right seems to be to go with your feeelz.

And the style of the Left and their Jewish supporters is to clumsily and always ineffectively attempt to repurpose the rhetoric of the dissident Right as the only movement with any true revolutionary life and creativity. Please.

I can engage you in as long a debate as you would like on these topics, but you seemingly lack the innate ability to provide any meaningful debate in return. That the Asians revere Jewish position in the West, instead of taking it as a warning that a separate ethnopolitical group has refined the process of instituting fifth column in nations with large militaries and elsewhere, correlates with the East Asian emphasis on appearance over substance.

For most Asian groups, the appearance of success is primary and therefore the means by which it is achieved (subversion, cheating, nepotism, conspiracy, etc) is inconsequential.

Which would be fine except that essential world view undermines concepts like justice under the law, its procedure, and any resultant truly functional society. Which is why Asians struggle so hard with that result.

I used to follow the Exile at the time. It was snarky and irreverent and I especially enjoyed the columns of the War Nerd. Then after Ames got kicked out of Russia he turned into a left-fascist, a kind of a precursor to Antifa and HuffPo

I’d strongly argue that what you perceived was not a change in Ames, but instead how his environment framed who he was and therefore in how you (and others) were prone to perceiving him.

Post communist Russia allowed Ames’s ideology a certain cover, perhaps inadvertently because overt communist propaganda would not have fared well.

This was an environment in which Ames’s ideology was the actual ideology of the ostensibly disempowered. It was an environment in which his ideology was revolutionary. This breaths spirit into any political movement and certainly into the political satire that defined The Exile’s editorial style.

The essential perspective is that The Exile was a creature of post-communist Russia. As ardent communist supporters, the Exile staff was forced to engage in a criticism of the New Russia using any and every manner of political nuance as long as it fell short of full on call for a return of Leninism.

Once in back the States, they would have likely done well to stay the course with their irreverence. However, here, Leninism is a strong social and political undercurrent. Ames’s views are not disempowered here but, thanks to the power of his tribe, instead are deeply institutionalized within the halls of power.

It is difficult to create effective political satire when your position is essentially that of the elite.

They probably tried, but realized the futility of the effort and resigned themselves to the humorless-control role that defines all movements in power.

  260. Jack D says:
    @Buzz Mohawk

I don’t buy the chickenhawk argument – it’s just a disqualifying trick. You don’t have to have personally seen combat to have a voice in our democracy. Being in combat (Kerry, Hitler) doesn’t automatically make you better or worse than someone who hasn’t (Bush, FDR). Some people are horrified by their war experiences and draw the conclusion that humans should NEVER go to war. Others glory in them and can’t wait until the fighting resumes so that they can complete their revenge on their cruel enemies. Neither one is correct. War is not ALWAYS the answer but on rare occasions it is justified. Having the unfortunate honor of having seen war before doesn’t give you any special insight or status – in fact the strong emotions involved may cloud your ability to make an objective judgment. Vonnegut was so traumatized by his war experience (as an American POW digging the bodies of hundreds of suffocated and cooked German women and children and old people out of the rubble of firebombed Dresden) that he became an ardent pacifist – there was probably no future war that he would have ever supported no matter how “just”.

  261. @Jack D

Some Veterans seem to love war.

One of my ancestors, Richard Ghoulston, was a captain in the Mexican American War. After that he was pretty much a hawk. He was the third territorial governor of Washington. He and the governor of British Columbia tried very hard to start a war over the San Juan Islands. He was a Kentucky Colonel, meaning the honorary title, but took his family and slaves to Tennessee during the War, which was common practice in those days.

Or, one can think of John McCain, who seemed to want to invade everyone in sight.

Still, veterans often have a wariness of war the rest of us are missing.

This is not a new phenomenon. It was traditional in Native American culture for there to be a tribal council of elders. When a young war chief wanted to wage war, often the elders’ job was to talk him out of it.

  262. @Jack D

I am a big fan of Vonnegut, and I consider his Slaughterhouse Five to be a great book. His perspective is valid as far as I am concerned. Could the fact that much of his view came from his time in Dresden have anything to do with your casual dismissal of his opinion?

On or about February 14th, the Americans came over, followed by the R.A.F. Their combined labors killed 250,000 people in 24 hours and destroyed all of Dresden — possibly the world’s most beautiful city. But not me.

After that we were put to work carrying corpses from Air-Raid shelters; women, children, old men; dead from concussion, fire or suffocation. Civilians cursed us and threw rocks as we carried bodies to huge funeral pyres in the city.

    1. My dismissal is not casual at all – there are good and valid reasons why we cannot be ruled only by war survivors with PTSD. I wouldn’t want to be ruled by Primo Levi either.

    2. The 250,000 number is wrong by a factor of ten. 25,000 dead is not chopped liver but it’s not the same thing as 250,000. The Soviets came up with this number after the war to make the Americans and British look bad.

    3. Vonnegut’s view that Dresden was a peaceful city where they made only porcelain figurines was not true. Again, as a prisoner Vonnegut was in no position to make an objective assessment of Dresden’s military and strategic value. A USAF study after the war defended the operation as the justified bombing of a strategic target, which they noted was a major rail transport and communication center, housing 110 factories and 50,000 workers in support of the German war effort. The British had the view (right or wrong – probably wrong) that the “shock and awe” of an attack on a civilian center would awake the German population and cause them to turn against the regime. War is hell – innocents die on both sides. Anything that shortened the war, even by a day, was probably “worth” the 25,000 lives (not all of whom were innocent non-combatants). In the long run, perhaps the destruction made the Germans allergic to war and was worth it for that reason.

    4. Are my views colored by the fact that some of those who reaped the whirlwind on that day had (or at least had supported leaders who had) sowed the wind? Sure – that too. There was a measure of crude justice. Flirting with the dark side is dangerous. Don’t do it. Maybe your enemies will pay the price – may you will have to repay it tenfold later.

Private Vonnegut could not have known the true number on May 29, 1945, and that is not the reason I included that part of his letter.

250,000 seems too high, and 25,000 seems too low. Maybe will will never know. Do you believe the 6,000,000 number? The difference is that now we can argue Dresden, but people get put in prison for publicly questioning the 6,000,000 number.

Whatever. My main point it that OUR soldiers should not be fighting other people’s wars. We also should not be acting like an empire. We don’t need to be, so cui bono?

  266. Jack D says:

Six million is a ballpark number. All the serious historians are somewhere in the 5.3 to 6.2 million range with the average coming out a hair below 6 million. Lucy S. Dawidowicz used the pre-war census figures to estimate 5.934 million. Yehuda Bauer and Robert Rozett in the Encyclopedia of the Holocaust (1990) estimated 5.59–5.86 million. A 1996 study led by Wolfgang Benz suggested 5.29 to 6.2 million, based on comparing pre- and post-war census records and surviving German documentation on deportations and killings. Martin Gilbert arrived at a minimum of 5.75 million.

25,000 for Dresden is the most recent number arrived at by “respectable” sources, but Vonnegut could not have known that in ’45. Even 25,000 is a lot of death, especially if it is your job to dig them out of the rubble and burn them on funeral pyres and no so many months earlier you were a kid drinking malteds at the malt shop and living a normal life – that’s a lot to take.

OUR soldiers should not be fighting other people’s wars. Was WWII “other people’s war”? Lindbergh thought that it was Britain’s war and the Jew’s war. Was he right?

The British had the view (right or wrong – probably wrong) that the “shock and awe” of an attack on a civilian center would awake the German population and cause them to turn against the regime.

What I’ve read is more along the lines of demoralization. It’s much harder to fight a regime than it is the local gang, and I never hear of local gangs being driven out out by civilians using forcible means. If the intended effect was demoralization, I think it worked. The Germans screamed defiance when surveyed, but were docile as lambs during the occupation. There is that little matter of German casualties, military and civilian alike, amounting to ~10% of the German population.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_II_casualties

By comparison, the Civil War killed 3% of Americans on both sides, and the nation was exhausted by war’s end.

    * Sunni Arabs in Iraq were spoiling for a fight when GI’s showed up in Baghdad, but we hadn’t killed millions of Iraqi troops and civilians. “Shock and awe” was misused by Tommy Franks. It doesn’t come from explosions – it comes from the misery imposed by an unending parade of death and mutilation in the course of war.

Despite the media furor, the total deaths from the Iraqi campaign as of today have come to less than 300,000. That’s less than 1% of the Iraqi population of 38m people. Iraq’s Sunni Arab population is estimated at 20% of the total. 20% would mean 7.6m Sunni Arabs. Assuming 1/2 of the dead are Sunni Arab, only 2% of Iraq’s Sunni Arabs have been killed to date, compared to 10% of the German population when the Soviet flag was hoisted over the Reichstag. There’s a long road ahead for peace in Iraq, as its Sunni Arabs continue to fight for what they feel to be their birthright – the status of Brahmin overlords in a land predominantly populated by Untouchables (Kurds, Christian and Shiite Arabs).

Dresden was bombed after a request from the Soviets. The intention was to disrupt the transport of German troops and materiel from Italy to the eastern front. It worked.

As I’ve said many times free speech is not a principle, it’s a weapon. It’s a weapon for gaining power. Once you’ve gained power it becomes a potential weapon for your enemies. Conservatives are just too dumb to understand this.

It is now long obvious that this form of communication is PUBLIC and needs to be held open by the public. It has become an essential part of free speech and should be protected as such.

Of course you’re right. But there ain’t nobody in the government or on either side of mainstream politics who wants free speech. There ain’t nobody in the corporate sector who wants free speech. Nobody who actually has power wants free speech.

The only people who want free speech are those who have no power. And they are obviously in no position to do anything about it. The only way they could do something about it is by seizing power. I have no idea how they would go about doing that.

To think that any modern government, or any Supreme Court, or anybody with any sort of controlling interest in the media (including social media) is going to do anything to allow free speech is pure fantasy.

The bombing of Dresden had many motives, but the most obvious one which nobody likes to mention is that it was payback for the ‘Battle of the Bulge’. It was a not-so-subtle warning to Hitler that if he tried something like that again it would be the end of Germany.

  280. I graduated high school in 1979. In the late 1970s my high school had a computer lab with clunky
computers that looked like glorified typewriters that ran BASIC. There were some computer
nerds at the time that wrote some very complex Star Trek programs in BASIC.
