From the Los Angeles Times this afternoon:

Traveler, USC’s mascot, comes under scrutiny for having a name similar to Robert E. Lee’s horse

Nathan Fenno

When Richard Saukko galloped his chalk-white Arabian horse named Traveler around the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum almost 56 years ago, it was supposed to be a one-time stunt.

Instead, the brief performance before USC kicked off its season against Georgia Tech turned into one of college football’s iconic traditions. A succession of white horses named Traveler have followed — Traveler IX debuts this fall — trotting out of the tunnel as “Conquest” plays and the costumed Trojan warrior atop the horse waves a sword. But during a rally earlier this week to show solidarity in the aftermath of the violence in Charlottesville, Va., a USC campus group linked the name to Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee, whose favorite horse was Traveller.

At the rally, according to the student newspaper the Daily Trojan, Saphia Jackson, co-director of the USC Black Student Assembly, asked students not to be quiet, and reminded that “white supremacy hits close to home” and referenced the name of the Trojans mascot. …

“The problem is this: maybe three weeks ago it was fine,” Pat Saukko DeBernardi said. “So now the flavor of the day is . . . we all have to be in hysteria. . . . It’s more of a political issue. The horse isn’t political and neither am I.”

She noted that the name of Lee’s well-known horse included an extra “l” and, besides, Traveler was already named when her late husband purchased him for $5,000 in 1958, half the asking price. The horse was a fixture in movies like “Snowfire” and “The Ballad of a Gunfighter.”

“He was a movie horse and he turned mean,” Richard Saukko once told The Times. “That’s how I got him so cheap. A few months later, he’d become so gentle again, people wouldn’t believe it was the same horse.”

… He used Charlton Heston’s leftover costumes from “Ben Hur” to assemble a Trojan warrior outfit — though the armor bruised his arms.

Okay, but Traveler is a white horse.

Case closed!

" It is the mindlessness of all of this that scares me."

It is not mindless. Ultimately, the Resistance traces back to the DNC. The issues themselves may appear, and be, nonsensical, but they serve as rallying points for groups of people and provide news fodder for the Democratic party press. This is a very deliberate strategy by a group of people who regard politics to be a business, much like dealing illegal drugs or making book.

If you are talking about the people doing the screaming at BLM demonstrations, or wearing black masks as members of the "anti-fa" (a name made up by a reporter, if I ever heard one), then I'll agree...as a wise commenter pointed out recently on this website, those people really do have a Cargo Cult concept of how , and why, some prosper in society, and some don't.

It's not just that when Herodotus wrote Africa was illiterate. It's not just that nothing of note happens in Africa that is worthy of writing down. The real reason blacks have no sense of history is that they are bastards. If you don't know who your father was you are unlikely to be interested in his fathers accomplishments.

Richard Spencer (who isn't a nazi, but is made out to be one by the media) has even spoken about this - that the left are tired of the old right because it is boring. Beating up on people like Ted Cruz and John McCain is dull because they are dull. They want a new enemy. And consequently they might be open to giving the new right some visibility and even a (back-handed) platform. After all, your enemy can't be entirely invisible, or people will forget that you have one.

In the video of pulling down monument at Durham, the kids seem so desperate to have some GREAT ISSUE for fight and live for. They pulled down this piece of steel and were kicking it to show how radical they are.

Yeah, that was pretty silly. Let's show how brave and righteous we are by kicking a fallen statue. It was a completely childish response - the sort of thing you see Arabs do. Not unlike the antics of the cartoon nazis in Charlottesville, a lot of SJW posturing is just LARPing.

It’s simple. Black people have no history.

Chinese Peepul have long rich history, but what did they do during the Cultural Revolution?

I think this level of destructiveness has to do with rise of monomania.

Consider the Romans. They could be brutal and destructive. What they did to Carthage was extreme. But that was a unique case, not a universal model. Romans were esp harsh because the war between Rome and Carthage was so extreme. It was an act of ultra-revenge.

But generally, Romans were tolerant of those whom they conquered. Romans didn't ban the locals from worshiping local gods. Romans even let Jews worship God and worship in the Temple as long as Jews didn't rebel. The smashing of Jerusalem wasn't ideological. It was strategic due to rebellion and wars.

So, Romans were in pagan poly-cultural mode. They wanted power over others but didn't much care what others worshiped or thought.

In contrast, Christianity was mono-thematic. There was one God and only one God and all people must be saved through Jesus. Now, Jews were also intolerant in their monotheism but they weren't interested in converting gentiles into Jews. So, even as Jews cursed pagan idolatry, they feared that less than the prospect of gentiles 'appropriating' the Jewish God. (Ironically, such was done by Jews themselves in the form of Jesus and Paul and others.)
Christianity universalized the intolerant monomania of Judaism with one God, with all other gods being false or demonic or evil.
So, the Romans changed course once they became Christian. They adopted the religion of a defeated people and then used its monomaniacal themes to smash Roman temples and Greek temples all over. Incredibly, the victor people were smashing their own cultural glory in the name of an idea originating from a defeated people. Also, if pagan Romans tolerated the cults and religions of conquered non-Romans, Christian Rome changed strategy and pressured non-Romans to also convert to Christianity. Romans were no longer just interested in political domination. They were iconoclastic mode in dealing with OTHER cultures.

Islam was another universalized offshoot of Judaism(as well as Christianity) , and it too went into iconoclastic mode. It too believed there is only ONE truth for all time.

And this monomaniacal mindset later morphed into 'scientific' ideologies in the West. So, Marxists were so sure that they had the one and only true understanding of history and justice. And other 'scientific' theories made the same claim. The most frightening thing about Nazis was their scientism. If Nazis just wanted to dominate other peoples and lord over them, no big deal. But as they believed that their ideology was 'scientific'(and science is universally true everywhere), it was a 'scientific universal duty' for 'Aryans' to gain mastery over much of the world and create laws and policies to actualize this in every corner of life.

Consider the impact of Christianity and Communism on China. The Taiping Rebellion was like a movement like no other, and it tore China apart. It was inspired by the monomania of Christianity gone psychotic in the mind of a particular visionary or loon. And communism under Maoism wreaked havoc all over China to make everyone and everything Maoist. Chinese had never been that monomaniacal.

Pagan China had been repressive and brutal, but not monomaniacal. Confucianism and Taoism both urged the balance of things. There was no single truth. Rather, there were hierarchies or balances. According to Confucianism, some people have higher standing, but a good society is one of harmony where there is mutual understanding among the various groups and classes.
And Taoism says there is yin and yang and both are essential to maintaining balance in the world. Neither yin nor yang must gain total power or domination. One cannot exist without the other.
This is at odds with the Christian-thinking and Islamic-thinking that arose in Europe and Middle East. According to Christian monomania, all pagan symbols and temples must be smashed, and Christian destruction of pagan Europe was extensive. The Germanic sagas would not be with us if not for the fact that some survived in places like Iceland.

In this sense, one might argue that the Chinese(and Hindu) cultural modes were wiser, more moderate, more tempered. Instead of seeking The Truth, they were for the balance and harmony of truths. Balance was more important than the extreme that claimed to be the truth. Chinese and Hindus regarded such extremism as egotistical, arrogant, individualist, etc. Roarkian.

And yet, there was an advantage to the 'extremist' thinking of the West. It led to greater energy, fervor, drive, commitment, and ambition. It created spiritual visionaries, artists, scientists, conquerors, thinkers, and enterprisers who had no sense of restraint tempered by balance and sought to take it to the limit. It is telling that even though Mt. Everest is in India-China area, a white guy was the first to climb it.

Also, this 'extremism' led to cultural pendulums which made every side more passionate, driven, savvy, clever, charged, and etc. It became more like a sports game. After all, a football game where both teams opt for 'balance' and 'moderation' might just look like something like this:

    https://youtu.be/ur5fGSBsfq8?t=57s

As such, Chinese and Hindu histories became uneventful as the emphasis was on the balance and tempering of extremes.

In contrast, Europe went through many great violent revolutions in religion, art, science, politics, discovery, warfare, and etc. It's like they had change of seasons where winter purges the overgrowth and decay and when summer makes new things grow. Such spirit made each kingdom more defiant of others, seeking its own mastery against other attempts at mastery.

Asian history was like a dead clock where the pendulum remains in the middle.
Western history was like a fast moving clock with pendulum moving left and right very fast.

Renaissance and Reformation. Revolution and Reaction. Left and Right. Capitalism and Communism.
In the East, there was the fall of monarchs and dynasties, but their decline was not seen as the result of bad idea. Rather, they'd lost the sense of balance, thus the mandate of heaven. So, new rulers were to restore the balance. In contrast, Western change of power was far more ideological. A new power was justified because it was more righteous with the real truth on its side.

Paradoxically, capitalist American defeated communist Soviet Union because more of America was 'destroyed', which made way for the new. In terms of technology, fashion, habits, elites, and etc. America in 1989 was hardly what it had been in 1917. In contrast, Soviet Union of 1989 was still very much an extension of the original communist blueprint. In America, if anything there had been many falls and collapses of power: Catholic Church, Conservatism, Southern power, Wasp power, counter-culture, etc. But because of such dynamism, American economy had been able to remake itself whereas communism, though initially revolutionary and productive, became moribund and byzantine.

Fascism was mindful of the excessive pendulum swings between left and right, between Marxism and Smithism, and etc. It sought to arrive at a balance of left and right. But it was also aware of the dangers of such balance, that it might lead to stasis and stagnation. So, there was a need to energize and charge up the people with new visions. Unfortunately, Mussolini decided to ape the capitalist-imperialists and build an empire for Italy. Bad idea.

  27. This just out from Duke University:

    To the Duke community:

After hearing from and consulting with a number of students, faculty, staff, and alumni, and with the strong support of the Board of Trustees, I authorized the removal of the statue of Robert E. Lee from the entrance of Duke Chapel early this morning.

I took this course of action to protect Duke Chapel, to ensure the vital safety of students and community members who worship there, and above all to express the deep and abiding values of our university.

The removal also presents an opportunity for us to learn and heal. The statue will be preserved so that students can study Duke’s complex past and take part in a more inclusive future.

Wednesday night’s act of vandalism made clear that the turmoil and turbulence of recent months do not stop at Duke’s gates. We have a responsibility to come together as a community to determine how we can respond to this unrest in a way that demonstrates our firm commitment to justice, not discrimination; to civil protest, not violence; to authentic dialogue, not rhetoric; and to empathy, not hatred.

As part of this effort, I am creating a commission, to include faculty, students, staff, alumni, trustees and members of the Durham community, to advise on next steps and to assist us in navigating the role of memory and history at Duke. The commission will look at how we memorialize individuals on the Duke campus in buildings and sculpture and recommend principles drawn from Duke’s core values to guide us when questions arise. I will ask this commission to work expeditiously.

In addition, and in concert with Provost Sally Kornbluth, we will use the next year to explore various aspects of Duke’s history and ambitions through teaching and scholarship. This will include an exhibition in the Library; a campus conversation about controversy and injustice in Duke’s history; and a forum to explore academic freedom, freedom of speech, and freedom of assembly in the university. Further information about these programs will be forthcoming.

As this process moves forward, I welcome your thoughts about how Duke can best address the troubling events of the past few months, learn from a careful and unvarnished understanding of our national and institutional history, and build a stronger, more inclusive future as a university community.

    Vincent E. Price

The issues themselves may appear, and be, nonsensical, but they serve as rallying points for groups of people and provide news fodder for the Democratic party press. This is a very deliberate strategy by a group of people who regard politics to be a business, much like dealing illegal drugs or making book.

If you are talking about the people doing the screaming at BLM demonstrations, or wearing black masks as members of the “anti-fa” (a name made up by a reporter, if I ever heard one), then I’ll agree…as a wise commenter pointed out recently on this website, those people really do have a Cargo Cult concept of how , and why, some prosper in society, and some don’t.

The more stories like these get publicized the better for DJT.

very true, need to egg them on. Trumps poll numbers went up last week after putting the blame on both sides in Charlottesville. The rhetoric from the left makes is getting more wacky and hateful. If they keep it up the GOP should expand their majority in congress next year.

But were the arguers shown to be awful, evil people? I didn't see the movie, so I don't know. That is, however, a pretty standard Hollywood trick. Like in the movie "American History X" - they had Ed Norton's neo-nazi character make a lot of reasonable, level-headed observations - things that weren't any different than what might be said by Steve, or Pat Buchanan, or Peter Brimelow. But they had them all issue from the mouth of a guy with a swastika tattoo on his chest. It's a way of deligitimizing your opponents arguments: "Sure, that's a good argument and all, but it's what nazis believe, so it must be evil." Even though the nazi in this case was completely fictitious.

Unfortunately, if any of the angry, resentful SJW’s figure out who this statue is of, young Columbus is doomed! People are missing the point. It DOES NOT MATTER if most Americans and particularly White Americans are repulsed by tearing down any and all statues of White people, anywhere, any time. THAT DOES NOT COUNT.

WHAT COUNTS: Corporate power, White women in a Matriarchy, various non-White rioters, and above all Oligarchic power of a few billionares like Bezos, Soros, the “saintly sage of Omaha” Warren Buffett who is undoubtedly behind this as well, plus the Hollywood crowd.

We don’t live in a Democracy, or a Republic. We haven’t for decades. We live in an Oligarchy that is Matriarchal, hence the periodic moral panics going back decades to the “Satanists in Pre Schools” that ruined the Amirault’s lives but got some Nice White Lady prosecutor a political career; the stuff in things sprayed on Apples (Alar I think); rock music lyrics that launched Tipper Gore’s PMRC, and so on. This is not new, just another moral panic by Nice White Ladies about the people they loathe. In Prohibition it was Irish and Italian Catholics who drank too much; now its “loser” White men who have the original sin of not being Tom Brady.

Yeah of COURSE they will probably shoot Traveler, and no nobody will do anything about it any more than they did anything about their relatives being hanged for being witches in Salem. The power of the state coerced by a bunch of Upper Class young women making hysterical accusations was too powerful. Only when the Governor’s wife was accused did the trials just stop, with no explanation or discussion.

This is part and parcel of Puritan type societies — the weakness of Northern European Germanics from an HBD perspective is that instead of slapping around their women and dominating the way the women desire themselves, they appease and placate their constant S-test demands and fail to dominate them driving them both to other alien men and creating moral panics to stir things up. Its why places like England, Germany, Sweden etc. are so cucked; and why Spain and Italy were not when they treated women poorly and became instantly cucked when they treated women well like the Swedes do.

As for mediatainment depicting White men as unworthy dorks; well that’s what young White women want and feel. Black dudes are free to express dominance in every turn; and have darker skin, lower natural IQs, and more impulsive violence all of which are catnip to women. They cannot resist it and its genetically hard wired. White men by contrast are less attractive, having paler skin, higher natural IQs, more male cooperativeness, and less impulsiveness. This is also HBD driven, selected for by success in shock battle of annihilation which requires these traits and cannot succeed with warrior types like Africans. Unfortunately with the pill, condom, and anonymous urban living — traits that were highly successful are now disastrous. Its the danger of an invasive species decimating a previously successful native one and long-term Whites simply cannot survive in the world they built without radical changes in how women are treated and regarded.

Richard Spencer (who isn’t a nazi, but is made out to be one by the media) has even spoken about this – that the left are tired of the old right because it is boring. Beating up on people like Ted Cruz and John McCain is dull because they are dull. They want a new enemy. And consequently they might be open to giving the new right some visibility and even a (back-handed) platform. After all, your enemy can’t be entirely invisible, or people will forget that you have one.

Romans didn’t ban the locals from worshiping local gods. Romans even let Jews worship God and worship in the Temple as long as Jews didn’t rebel. The smashing of Jerusalem wasn’t ideological. It was strategic due to rebellion and wars.

So, Romans were in pagan poly-cultural mode. They wanted power over others but didn’t much care what others worshiped or thought.

In contrast, Christianity was mono-thematic. There was one God and only one God and all people must be saved through Jesus. Now, Jews were also intolerant in their monotheism but they weren’t interested in converting gentiles into Jews. So, even as Jews cursed pagan idolatry, they feared that less than the prospect of gentiles ‘appropriating’ the Jewish God.

And this monomaniacal mindset later morphed into ‘scientific’ ideologies in the West. So, Marxists were so sure that they had the one and only true understanding of history and justice. And other ‘scientific’ theories made the same claim. The most frightening thing about Nazis was their scientism. If Nazis just wanted to dominate other peoples and lord over them, no big deal. But as they believed that their ideology was ‘scientific’(and science is universally true everywhere), it was a ‘scientific universal duty’ for ‘Aryans’ to gain mastery over much of the world and create laws and policies to actualize this in every corner of life.

Roarkian.

And yet, there was an advantage to the ‘extremist’ thinking of the West.

Also, this ‘extremism’ led to cultural pendulums which made every side more passionate, driven, savvy, clever, charged, and etc. It became more like a sports game. After all, a football game where both teams opt for ‘balance’ and ‘moderation’ might just look like something like this:

    https://youtu.be/ur5fGSBsfq8?t=57s

As such, Chinese and Hindu histories became uneventful as the emphasis was on the balance and tempering of extremes.

In contrast, Europe went through many great violent revolutions in religion, art, science, politics, discovery, warfare, and etc. It’s like they had change of seasons where winter purges the overgrowth and decay and when summer makes new things grow.

Rather, they’d lost the sense of balance, thus the mandate of heaven. So, new rulers were to restore the balance. In contrast, Western change of power was far more ideological. A new power was justified because it was more righteous with the real truth on its side.

Paradoxically, capitalist American defeated communist Soviet Union because more of America was ‘destroyed’, which made way for the new.

Bad idea.
