In “Is Everyone a Little Bit Racist?,” NYT columnist Nicholas Kristof says we must redouble The War on Subconscious Crimethink:
… Young black men in America suffer from widespread racism and stereotyping, by all society — including African-Americans themselves.
Research in the last couple of decades suggests that the problem is not so much overt racists. Rather, the larger problem is a broad swath of people who consider themselves enlightened, who intellectually believe in racial equality, who deplore discrimination, yet who harbor unconscious attitudes that result in discriminatory policies and behavior.
… School administrators suspend black students at more than three times the rate of white students. …
“There’s a whole culture that promotes this idea of aggressive young black men,” Correll notes. “In our minds, young black men are associated with danger.”
Further evidence for these unconscious attitudes toward race come from implicit association tests, a window into how our unconscious minds work.
I’ve cited this many times before, such as in my 2013 Taki’s Magazine article, but here’s a fairly crisp version:
The best current data on rates of killing by race are found in a 2011 Obama Administration report on homicide numbers, “Homicide Trends in the United States, 1980-2008” by Alexia Cooper and Erica L. Smith of the federal Bureau of Justice Statistics:
“Based on available data from 1980 to 2008—
“Blacks were disproportionately represented as both homicide victims and offenders.…The offending rate for blacks (34.4 per 100,000) was almost 8 times higher than the rate for whites (4.5 per 100,000).”

That’s pretty bad. They’re making the all-too-common mistake of conflating “more than” with “as much as”, and then they top it off with a dishonest rounding up. It’s 6.6 times higher, and 6.6 does not qualify as almost 7, let alone the “almost 8″ that they claim.

As I'm not qualified to question the math, I won't bother. I'd make a larger point of "so what either way." When it comes to social indicators and pretty much everything else, even being 2x higher is a huge, almost monumental difference. Want to try fighting a guy 2x stronger than you? Want to try outbidding someone 2x wealthier than you? Want to drink an equal amount of booze that's 2x more alcoholic and see if it doesn't get you drunker? Want to take the SATs against a guy who's 2x smarter than you? Want to turn your thermostat up by 2x and see how comfortable you are? Want to take your highest bench press and make it 2x and see if you can even budge the bar? Want to compare your Willie to a guy who's 2x your size?
2x is a gigantic difference. 6.6x higher is practically inconceivable.

Kristof favors False Enlightenment that begins with the apriori premise that blacks are gentle giants or mountain-sized Negroes who luv a wittle white mouse.

Real Enlightenment based on Truth, Honesty, and Courage doesn’t work like that. It doesn’t begin with a premise and then try to mold everything to fit into it. That is Procrusteanism. It is also craven opportunism as, surely, Kristof chooses not to live in Detroit himself.
True, men of enlightenment like Thomas Jefferson said ‘all men are created equal’, but he meant it in the most general way. There was the other side of Jefferson who was interested in observing and noting differences among the races. And he sure did notice a lot on un-PC stuff.
In schools, black kids tend to beat up non-black kids. So, are we to blame the victims for making blacks look bad?
We live in repressive times. Even progs see the evidence of racial difference in sports, schools, streets, buses, courtrooms, prisons, porn, gay porn, cuckold culture, rap thuggery, and etc where blacks bully and/or dominate. But PC has brainwashed them to pretend that all races should be the same. So, they spout PC crap consciously, but the truth they observe seeps into their subconscious.
But what does Kristof want to do? Pull INCEPTION tricks on everyone?

Something tells me Black students are being suspended for much serious offenses like verbally threatening physical harm to their teachers and even straight up following through with physically harming their teachers. Fist fighting with other students. Serious stuff like that.
Regarding these “implicit association” tests, I suspect blacks would perform “worse” than whites, both toward other races and toward blacks themselves. Are these tests given to non-whites at any significant scale?
Do you think people like Kristoff intentionally refuse to acknowledge the reason why black males are treated like criminals? Can someone really not see that blacks are perceived as more likely to commit crime because blacks are more likely to commit crime??
I think the challenge is great but one that can be done. Tyre are areas around the country where the progress made is not equivalent to other areas where a regression is what we are witnessing now. The areas that are regressing are the same ones whose education systems are in a state of greater decline. In all fifty states, far more needs to be done to teach the African American part of American history, earlier, more thoroughly and for a lot longer than we do now. There are adjustments to the curriculum that would behoove us to implement to inculcate a consciousness about our individual and our collective tendencies to discriminate. My personal choice would be to begin teaching and debating basic principles of social ethics beginning in first grade.

Ben Tilman wants to subtract the 1 as well. So if I have two dollars and you have one dollar I do not have two times more than you, I have one times more than you. A bit of a quibble and the 7.64 seems clearer to me — but in terms of formal grammar Ben Tilman is correct.
I see four mistakes in the NYT comment
a) the implicit assumption than being violent/aggressive is bad. While this narrative about being good=being nonvioelnt is quite popular in modern societies, it is obvious that throughout history violence was a positive value in all cultures of the world. Especially vioelnce at the micro-level is something we as the a little-bit modified (yes I know the book 10.000 year revolution) stone-age guys appreciate.
b) the assumption that blacks are not actually more aggressive than whites (of course even more so than asians)
c) the assumption that blacks suffer in this situation. more realistic is that blacks get more life-satisfaction than whites or asians. because punching somebody is better than getting punched and as a man being the winners in interracial dating is better than being the loosers.
d) the mistake of not being able to consider the own position, thus the position of the NYT on those thing, the lack of self-reference. What the NYT comment does not understand is that blacks being more aggressive and violent is exactly the reason why the NYT writers are so fascinated by them. Only because blacks are the winners in street fighting/ interracial dating/ being overall dominant the NYT is interested in them and tries to protect them. Like a beta wolf (NYT) bullying the omega wolf(racist) because he might have tried to annoy the alpha wolf(blacks).
Males are suspended more than females.

What was interesting was to hear him say that genetic differences matter. He speculated that humans were diverging and I thought of Charles Murray on the cognitive elite. BBC guy was a bit worried but was assured that this didn’t mean it was OK to be racist.
Everytime I encounter a liberal like Nick I ask them what type of school their kids attend. That usually gets them to shut up or change the subject.
I’m fond of saying that post-modernism is when a people forget all of the lessons of previous generations and start painfully re-learning them. It used to be that northern whites would treat blacks as equals, but not want to live near them. The result was the great black ghettos of northern cities. Southern whites had no qualms about living amongst blacks, but would never treat them as equals. Even today the old Confederacy is more integrated at a granular level than the north.
What Kristof is bemoaning is the way his coevals have arranged their society with regards to race. As Steve likes to point out, the Left forgets that they have been in charge for the last half century. It was Kristof’s city that started randomly stopping and frisking young black males on the street as a crime fighting tool.

I prefer to use the judgement of locals when determining if area is safe. Having lived in Chicago for nearly 20 years, the litmus test for crime is the presence of steel security/screen doors on front entry ways.
Invariably, a heavy presence of these doors indicates you are in a black neighborhood. For an unknown reason the black residents have determined that these metal security doors are desireable.

The correct ways to describe this ratio are “7.64 times the rate rate for whites” or “6.64 times higher than the rate for whites”. Rounding aside, describing this ratio as “almost 8 times higher than” is improper.

To beat an utterly dead horse:
Technically, Ben is correct. 7.64 times as much is (rounded up to 8) is 8x the crime rate, but 7x higher.
But rhetorically, people don’t think that way . Reading that black crime is 8x higher, one does not internally translate such a statement to mean ‘black crime is actually 9x as high’ (this is why the original writer made the mistake in the first place). So reading the statement, I think for most people, means 8x higher = 8x the rate. (this means that for most people, the two statements ’8x higher’ and ’8x the rate of’ are identical. Ben is right that this is technically incorrect).
So, a crime rate of 7.64x whites is 7.64 times as high, or 6.64 times higher. Rounded up, a crime rate of 7.64x whites is 8x as high, or 7x higher.
As for rounding up from 7.64 to 8 (or, if you prefer, 6.64 to 7), this is consistent with basic standard human practice with every scientific method known to man: 0-0.49 is rounded down, .50-.99 is rounded up.

The black girl said, “that’s racist!” and left. Ja-ja then said to me, ‘you believe that? I could be her cousin and she’s calling me racist.” There followed a general discussion of blacks, joined in by the owner’s sons, one 17, one 14, both attending public schools in the next town. Ja-ja, a laid-off Delta Pilot, said that when he was in military school in Georgia, blacks “made me fight every day.” Younger son, also born in Egypt and a cafe-au-lait colored soccer freak, described the black kids at his school as “STOO-pid,” by which he meant they didn’t try. Older son said, “I don’t have any problem with black people,” to which Ja-Ja repaid, “that’s because you kiss their ass.

Kristof is married to an Asian woman (Chinese). He is a Christian though; it’s usually a Jew who marries Asians or blacks. He has kids with her. He may be experiencing racism because of his kids. And maybe one of them is dating a black. This dating is quite typical of inter-racial kids, even those who are white/Asian.

You respond to an incorrect assertion by saying the equivalent of “it’s a common mistake”, but it’s still quite clearly incorrect because anyone who attempts to interpret it precisely will get a wrong impression. The fact that some people don’t care about verbal or mathematical precision doesn’t mean that no one should.
I’m a mathematician who has done a lot of professional media work and I can tell you that most reporters are so innumerate that they don’t understand the difference between “8 times as many as” and “8 times more than”, and most of the rest are so lazy that they won’t bother to check, and many of the remnant are so dishonest that they’ll use the incorrect formulation on purpose, and it’s always important to not let such mistakes pass.
