I don’t know which bill this 3 month old tweet is referring to, but I imagine it has passed and The Gap is fixed by now. So that Taki column I wrote last week about what the Stanford school achievement test score data base teaches us about racial gaps … well, never mind. It’s all been fixed.

Okay, here’s the press release:

April 03, 2019
Harris, Colleagues Introduce New Legislation to Narrow College Achievement Gaps
Bill Would Establish Competitive Grant Program for Higher Ed Institutions to Address Inequities

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Kamala D. Harris (D-Calif.) on Wednesday joined Senator Brian Schatz (D-HI) in introducing the College Equity Act, a bill that would give colleges and universities funding to address disparities in higher education recruitment, admissions, and support.

Well, if you have old iSteve favorite Brian “White Privilege” Schatz on your side, you must obviously know what you are doing.

“The student achievement gap that persists along race and class lines at colleges and universities across the country is a direct threat to students’ ability to succeed. We must fix that,” Senator Harris said. “I’m proud to join with my colleagues on this legislation to encourage these institutions to identify, study, and fix the driving factors behind the achievement gap and ensure that every student has an opportunity to thrive.”

Well, identify, study, and fix the driving factors behind the achievement gap should take, what, a week?

“There are schools where veterans, people of color, and people with disabilities are able to thrive, and others where they struggle.

Of course, it turns out in Stanford Professor Sean Reardon’s database of thousands of public school districts that there isn’t a single one in the USA where blacks score as well a white on official school achievement tests.

Studies show that too often higher education outcomes depend on demographics. Students of color have lower acceptance, enrollment, and graduation rates, as well as lower post-graduation salaries and higher student loan debt. Over half of all college students with disabilities do not graduate within eight years. Less than 60 percent of all Pell Grant recipients complete degree programs within six years.

The College Equity Act takes three steps toward addressing these kinds of achievement gaps.

Problem solved!

    the College Equity Act

For those who didn’t notice when equality was replaced the equity, there is an important difference in meaning that took me quite a bit of Googling to understand: Equality is equal opportunity; equity is equal outcomes. So equity had implicit bias and structural racism baked into it as assumptions.

The solutions for unequal opportunity tend to be things like remedial classes, tutors, etc. The solutions for equity problems tend to be threats to professors who don’t pass black students, since racism is the only possible explanation.

The sociologist’s second fallacy is the tendency to attribute any undesired “gap” found between a designated minority group and whites after controlling for all known social variables to the mysterious effects of racism, without considering alternative possibilities.

The sociologist’s first fallacy is the tendency to interpret a correlation between a social variable and a phenotype as causal, without considering that genetics could mediate the relationship.

These are not to be confused with La Griffe du Lion’s Fundamental Law of Sociology:

On large-scale tests of reasoning ability, the observed mean difference between non-Hispanic whites and African Americans is 1.1 + 0.2 standard deviation.

    A pet peeve:

The student achievement gap that persists along race and class lines

Casually throwing in class, or poverty, or other confounded factors. No, the gap is race and race only.

What is the College Equity Act?

The College Equity Act establishes grants for equity audits, providing colleges and universities with the resources to examine and address gaps in student outcomes by race and ethnicity, gender, income, and other lines of identity. The audits examine institutional practices such as admissions policies, financial aid processes, faculty diversity, access to campus support services and special programs, other policies and practices. Grant recipients must then develop and execute improvement plans to address the inequities based on their findings.

Another pork barrel bill for diversity and inclusion consultants? Money to study something and write a report, and more money to cook up some new ways to torment racist white professors. And presumably later more money to study why the new plans didn’t work.

But eventually all this will in fact work. Blacks not graduating? Just graduate them. Not passing the MCAT? Just put them in med school. Just pass them out of med school. Give them special time to study during internships. Flunking medical boards? Change the tests, or eliminate them, substituting recommendation letters. Patients, nurses, and other doctors complaining? Make that illegal:

Patient banned after demanding ‘white doctor’ at hospital

Video shows woman demanding ‘white doctor’ for her son in waiting-room rant
“Can I see a doctor please that’s white, that doesn’t have brown teeth, that speaks English?”

  8. I was truly disappointed by President Trump’s Fourth of July extravaganza. For the trillions of dollars we have poured into the military over the years, all we got was a lame, sometime bizzare history lecture, acompanied by a few parked panzers and flybys of three or four aircraft from each of the services.

Our ostensible enemies, the Russians, Chinese, and even the dead-broke North Koreans (and even the French) manage to put rolling tanks, missiles, and canons as well as marching brigades of men and women, along with squadrons of flying aircraft on display every year.

Remember the Kennedy missile gap? Well, we have a serious martial parade gap, and if Trump can’t fix that, then President Harris should.

  9. Kamasutra:”Here’s a truth: there’s a student achievement gap in colleges and universities that persists across race & class and it threatens our students’ ability to succeed. We need to fix it. ”

Since Teh Genius Coates has mathematically proven that redlining is largely responsible for the various plights of black bodies (including their difficulties with reading and arithmetic), Kamasutra will also fight the achievement gap with a brilliant idea described in an iSteve article headline from yesterday:

Kamala to Increase Minority Homeownership by Giving Blacks $100 Billion

    What could possibly go wrong?

Here’s a disturbingly relevant blog post by Greg Cochran from 2013:

“Persists across race and class lines” is very poor language to use; it implies that they are talking about a gap based on some other factor than race or class, that persists regardless of what race or class of people we are talking about.

“There’s a student achievement gap along race and class lines in colleges and universities that continues to persist” would be a much better formulation.

Sen. Kamala Harris attacked former vice president Joe Biden over his opposition to forced busing to integrate public schools. The Harris campaign is now waffling on the issue. Over time, we may look back on that as a moment revealing Harris’s underlying weakness as a candidate.

If the debate exchange on busing damaged Biden more from creating the perception he has lost a step, it may damage Harris by highlighting that she tends to bluff and folds when called. She has not been called often, but if she were the nominee, you could bet on President Trump doing so.

In the tweet above she is exagerating the degree to which the bill she co-sponsored will address the problem.

If you read that carefully, it makes no sense on multiple fronts. Study how we admit students to find gaps in how well they succeed. What, we’re selecting smart white kids while rejecting dumb ones, while with people of color we select the dumb ones and reject the smart ones? The only problem is that the demands won’t stop there. Where are the black engineers? We guarantee the outcome. Okay, so nothing will work. Where are the black doctors? Okay, we’ll all be sicker. Where are the black lawyers? Okay, maybe we won’t notice much difference.

  55. Kamala Harris’ best strategy — and I think she’s cold-bloodedly ambitious enough to realize this — is not to win the Democratic nomination. She might well be able to do that, but in the process she’d have positioned herself so far to the left that she’d never win the general election.

Rather, it’s to make herself Biden’s obvious pick as his running mate — and Biden has a fair chance of winning. The media will rally behind him, he can credibly move back to the center, and Trump isn’t exactly a sure-fire winner himself.

So Biden/Harris win. Then one of three scenarios unfold. Either Biden dies or goes hopelessly ga-ga in office: Harris becomes president. Biden enjoys a successful two terms; a Harris who has meanwhile been industriously rowing herself back towards the center is his heir apparent and wins. Biden has a catastrophic presidency; Harris is no worse off than if she ran herself and lost in 2020.

Note that in two out of three of the above scenarios, Harris becomes our first Presidentrix. She’s also taken good care to make sure that of all the ‘progressive’ candidates, she’s the one that loves Israel the bestest.

I’ll put my money on this being the outcome: the Democrats are going to nominate Biden/Harris in 2020. Aside from everything else, they’ll be facing Trump/Pence. Note that now Israel will have not just both the possible presidents in her stable; but both of their possible replacements.

Talk about depth. The Zionists are going to love this.

Affording joy and pleasure is unfortunately still a privilege in our society for POC and we believe everyone should have access to receiving such.

We’ve seen too many times orgasmic events happening in Detroit and other POC populated cities and what consistently happens is people outside of the community benefiting most from affordable ticket prices because of their proximity to wealth.

This cycle disproportionately displaces Black and brown people from enjoying entertainment in their own communities.

This is like the sixth or seventh time that Hollywood in one studio or another has devoted all its energy to making a thoroughly guilty person seem to be innocent, in a major celebrated project apparently accepted by normies. This behavior is by no means new (David Cole has brilliantly skewered both an older smaller example and one of the recent major cases, links below) but it’s easily one of the most odious things Hollywood does, and it has ramped up (or continued undiminished) in “new media.”

As you say, this intended to sound good as long as you don’t parse it too much, like a lot of rhetoric written by and for blacks.

Here’s a truth: – “A truth” – not the truth, or here’s something that is true, but “a truth”. Truth is relativistic so there can be more than one.

there’s a student achievement gap …. that persists across race & class

It’s a gap BETWEEN races and it persists OVER TIME. “persists across race & class” is meaningless doubletalk as others have noticed.

and it threatens our students’ ability to succeed. -“Our students” meaning students of color. The gap, by, definition, doesn’t “threaten” white or Asian students. So, by definition, any gap fixing program will have to be tailored to lift the boats of browns and browns only – anything that helped whites and Asian would only make the gap worse.

White students, implicitly are not “ours” – they are not a Democrat constituency. Leftists profess to be egalitarian but they know that, especially in an era of scarce resources (and once Leftists take power you are guaranteed t0 have such an era), you need to use government largess to reward your supporters (and withhold it to punish everyone else). This includes everything up to and including food but certainly including college education. Step 1 is to take government control of all resources “for the common good” and step 2 is to wield them as a club to insure your hold on power. People with “black backgrounds” (not meaning racially black but having a black character – children of capitalists, former regime officials, etc.) could not hope to attend college in Communist countries – higher education was reserved for those with proper proletarian credentials, ESPECIALLY children of Communist officials.

Kamala is not quite up to that level YET (she would have to bust thru a whole bunch of firewalls to get there, not that she won’t try) but in the meantime, the grants given out to “study” the gap can be distributed to Democrat constituents who otherwise have no marketable skills in the private economy. How many of those grants will go to people who vote Republican? And whatever “cures” are recommended will be channelled to blacks one way or another. “The cure for the Gap must begin long before kids get to college so we need more programs for schools and families in minority areas.”

  68. Jack D says:

Triangulation is a dirty word on the Left nowadays. Even if Kamala WANTED to tack right after the Convention (and it’s not so clear to me that she does), the Democrat activist base would not let her. This is going to be a very clearly defined election with the Democrat positioned WELL to the left of Trump.

You have to hope and pray that this will be repulsive enough to ensure Trump’s re-election because if the Democrat gets in, she (and it will probably be a she) will be committed to a hard Left program which is going to wreak havoc on our institutions and our economy.

  69. The solution to all these “gaps” — wealth gaps, homeownership gaps, achievement gaps, education gaps — is all quite simple.

Rather than making the heuristic a “black – white gap”, simply start labeling and discussing the issue of the “black – Jewish gap”, which would, of course, be far wider and much more noticeable.

Then just sit back and watch with amusement as the entire issue magically vanishes from public discourse overnight, never to be discussed again.

    Problem solved.

She’s also taken good care to make sure that of all the ‘progressive’ candidates, she’s the one that loves Israel the bestest.

She’s made several high-profile visits to Israel, accompanied by her Jewish husband.

Many speculate that husband Douglas Emhoff may be a husband-of-convenience, married for political leverage during the early stages of Kamala’s presidential aspiration. See comment-26 at link, of which this is the relevant excerpt:

    Mid 2000s to Mid 2010s: [Kamala] Cruises along in political career [in California];
    ca. spring 2013: Begins dating divorced Jewish lawyer Douglas Emhoff who has two children (press report says he proposed in March 2014);
    Aug. 2014: Marries Jewish lawyer;
    Mid 2010s: Visits Yad Vashem (Israel’s Holocaust memorial) at least twice;
March 2017: Gives long speech to AIPAC in which she lavishes every praise on the Jewish people and on Israel, complementing her strident pro-Israel record in the Senate.

Conclusion: Why would Harris have only gotten around to getting married in 2014, the year she turned 50, and was pretty close to the top in terms of political achievement? It does seem to me it may have been a “paving of the way” for a 2020 or 2024 presidential run:

In 2013-2014, Obama had been reelected and people expected Hillary to follow as the 2016 candidate; if she lost, Harris probably figured she could run in 2020 [as she is doing]; if Hillary won two terms, Harris could follow in 2024. But — single people don’t get elected president (except that one guy in the 19th century), so Harris grabbed one. Her choice of partner also brings with it some powerful political street-cred

The gist of the replies went as follows:

    Justice Duvall commented:

Do Kamala Harris and her husband even live in the same city? Her political base as in San Francisco … But her husband lives in Los Angeles.

    Anon replied:

Surely this would not be a political marriage of convenience with at least one homosexual spouse?

    Olorin replied:

Harris is a 100% meme candidate created by Big Media. This couple is about as California-globo-lib as you can get without being surnamed Steyer or Gelbaum. That their marriage is one of convenience seems an inescapable conclusion. Whether a beard is involved concerns me less than the fact that the vast majority of her campaign contributors are media agencies, including the talent firm that represents Jussie Smollett (CAA), and law firms.

    Jack D was skeptical:

Even if the marriage is a political alliance, it can also be some sort of love match at the same time – love is crazy. Why did sexy Bill Clinton hitch his wagon to the bookish Hillary?

All the “implicit White politics” that our people come up with are thus rendered moot and a speedbump to the racial Left. It is a taboo jealously guarded, vigorously enforced, and aggressively policed by the usual suspects in our cultural-political apparatus, including now the Big Tech problem.

(The closest thing to the above I’ve ever seen may be the June 2015 “They’re not sending their best” speech, which was taboo-breaking in its own right; none of the Jeb clones was talking about it, except now-forgotten Scott Walker.)

The comment above was specifically meant to narrowly propose what Trump might do, at this stage, to salvage something from his time in the political spotlight. It’s not some kind of all-or-nothing bet on Trump doing so, which would indeed be pathetic.
