Julian Castro Being There for Hillary Clinton

From the Washington Post, the latest update on the fabulous career of America’s designated Hispanic blank screen, Julian Castro, fresh off making $20 per week to bang the gavel at the beginning of San Antonio city council meetings:

Julian Castro

The Clintons break bread and build ties with Julian Castro, stoking talk of a 2016 ticket

By Ed O’Keefe and Philip Rucker August 14 at 3:23 PM

As she expands her political network in advance of an expected presidential run, Hillary Rodham Clinton and her husband have been cultivating an important ally who some believe could become her vice presidential running mate.

Former president Bill Clinton invited Julian Castro, a former San Antonio mayor and incoming Obama Cabinet secretary, to the Clintons’ home in Washington last week for a private dinner that friends described as a chance for Democratic leaders from different generations to become better acquainted. …

And in March, Hillary Clinton sat next to Henry Cisneros, who served in her husband’s Cabinet, at a private luncheon in New Mexico, where Cisneros said they discussed Castro and his political future.

“It’s a natural friendship waiting to bloom,” said Cisneros, also a former San Antonio mayor and a longtime family friend and political mentor of Castro and his identical twin brother, Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-Tex.).

I spent several hours once investigating a hunch that the reason for the media’s Castromania is that the illegitimate Castro Twins are the secrets sons of Cisneros, who was considered Vice Presidential Timber two decades ago. After all, there is very little online about who the Castros’ father is.

It made sense but it didn’t pan out. I finally found a photo of Julian giving a speech at a small party for his father as he retired from being a local schoolteacher.

Julian getting to know Hillary better

Said another person familiar with the discussions, who spoke on the condition of anonymity so as not to alienate either camp, “The Clintons are keeping the Castros very close to them.”

The behind-the-scenes maneuvering illustrates how the Clintons are trying to acclimate themselves into a Democratic Party that has evolved and nurtured new stars in the years since they ceded the stage to Barack Obama in 2008.

For the Clintons, there are clear advantages to building an alliance with Castro. A young and dynamic figure who broke onto the national scene with his keynote address at the 2012 Democratic National Convention, Castro is arguably the only Hispanic Democrat with a broad following. Although his background as a Mexican American could have broad appeal to Hispanic voters, Castro does not speak fluent Spanish.

My current theory is that Julian Castro’s career is basically a practical joke on America played by the amusing Zev Chafets, Menachem Begin’s old press secretary, who introduced him as the next logical step after Obama in a 2010 NYT Magazine article, “The Post-Hispanic Hispanic Politician.”

By the way, it’s often argued that Jerzy Kosinski’s 1970 English-language novella Being There was more or less lifted from a 1932 Polish bestseller The Career of Nicodemus Dyzma about a nonentity who rises up the ladder of political power by being whatever elites want him to be. Just from reading the descriptions of the two books on Wikipedia, however, they don’t sound exactly the same:

Nicodemus Dyzma has become proverbial in Poland as an archetype of the crude opportunist who makes his upwardly-mobile way by dint of fortuitous connections, ruthlessness and the acquiescence of an oblivious society. He is forced by the spirit of his times and the society around him to become something they need him to become. Ignorant and malleable, Dyzma turns into a puppet in the hands of the elite class. Whatever happens to him during his climb of the social ladder falls outside of his mental, financial and legal competence.

But at least in the Peter Sellers movie, Chance the Gardener isn’t ruthless or crude.

I wonder if the many accusations against the glamorous anti-Communist exile Kosinski — that he plagiarized books that hadn’t been translated into English, that his research assistants and editors wrote his books for him — were in some fashion Cold War payback for the accusations by Solzhenitsyn and other anti-Communist dissidents that 1965 Nobelist Mikhail Sholokhov had plagiarized And Quiet Flows the Don from an anti-Bolshevik Cossack who died during the Russian Civil War.

Well, I’m not going to resolve disputes over novels in other languages. I did like Kosinski’s appropriately vicious performance as Bolshevik apparatchik Zinoviev in Warren Beatty’s mostly lame Reds. By my recollection, the Kosinski turned in the second best performance in the movie behind only Jack Nicholson as Eugene O’Neill, which revived Nicholson’s then-faltering reputation, and well ahead of Beatty’s Keanu Reevesish performance. That’s pretty good for an amateur. Or maybe his whole life was a performance?

Ze’ev Chafets is the hagiographer of Rush Limbaugh (who is a friend of immigration restrictionists)–it’s unfair to paint that article as evidence of malign intent. But Steve can’t resist that dog whistle.

If Julian Castro were to become president of The United States, he would be the country’s first POTUS to have Amerindian DNA in him.

I am 100 percent certain has way more Amerindian DNA in him than the blue eyed pasty pale Elizabeth Warren.

Kosinski was disdained because he turned World War II in Poland into a literary and personal game. It’s fine to be a self-promoter, it is less fine when you use lies, slander, and faked suffering along with it. Kosinski realized that anti-Communism was never going to get him to where he wanted to be in America, alas, and he turned to things that would… to put it delicately… satisfy the expectations of certain ethnic elites in contemporary America. How could the Germans, with their Kultur, have really done this to the Jews? No, it was the Polish peasant with dirt under his fingernails.

Some time later, a fellow named Jan Gross shows how this is done in academia. Gross was a small-time scholar who wrote critically about Communism. Then he wrote a tendentious anti-Polish book about an apparent post-war pogrom of Jewish survivors in Poland, and his career took off. There is a good book to be written about how the urge to support Communism is so strong in the American left that the victims of Communism, the Russians, Poles, Chinese, are not just ignored, they are actively dehumanized and devalued. Thus, their suffering is of no importance, it has no weight when evaluating Communism. “With people like those, Communism was the only way to make them into human beings,” or even, “They got what they deserved.”

That’s if she’s smart enough and humble enough to know her limits. But if she was that smart and humble, she wouldn’t run for President. Our political elite are becoming a geriatric personality cult; they are not acting rationally.

Hillary Clinton is no Ronald Reagan. She will survive the campaign only because the campaigns are boiling down to a few large swing states. Then the old dingbat will be President. This should be fun.

In the novel, Chance is much as he is in the movie. He’s not crude or brutal. Nothing like that at all. He’s blank. There’s a great line in the book about Chance the Gardener’s, er, mind: “Not a single thought arose to disturb the soft soil of his brain.” Definitely worth reading.

Steve called this one in the air in 2010 or earlier, didn’t he?

But consider the wonderful Age of PC side to this!

That means that in a mere ‘nother 10 years we will have covered half-black males, Sixties Feminist white females, and Amerindian-Latinos for POTUS/vice-POTUS.

That means we can then move on to electing…well, not a divorced Jewish Rhodes Scholar and the poorest man in Congress (I’m thinking of Russ Feingold, whom I have long held in high esteem as a practical, balanced, supergeeky thinker and policy wonk, but his own party has not).

We can move on to the 57 categories of tranny!

By then the Furries should be able to secure GE chimerism, and we can have whole new categories to obsess over. Me, I’m waiting for the first president who has all the morphing genius of the mimic octopus with the hypnotic colorflashing skin of the cuttlefish. Come to think of it, that sounds a lot like Obama, so never mind.

I’m glad that Mencken broadcasts on our household’s Ouija board, though all he ever spells out these days is guffaws.

Really, if we’re going to have a Democratic president, does it make any difference whether the person is an empty-suit nonentity, like Castro, or someone with slightly more impressive credentials and experience? Democrats in power are ideologically and programmatically monolithic. Castro as president would do exactly as Biden or Warren or O’Malley or Cuomo would do.

There was in fact a sustained, (and Communist endorse btw) pogrom against Concentration Camp survivors in post WWII Poland. It was done by the peasantry. We have myriad eyewitness accounts by those few who survived both the camps AND the Polish peasants attempts to murder them once and for all. Indeed it was this experience that convinced Jewish survivors to trek to Israel, feeling that if they were going to be attacked, better to have their own nation and arms. [Which was indeed wise -- survival is never guaranteed for anyone but better to be armed than disarmed.]

As for Castro, he’ll never go anywhere. America is in love with Black leaders. They embody in a feminist, female-oriented society, the only “acceptable” model of masculinity. A “magical” embodiment of “wisdom” in a hundred Morgan Freeman movies with barely suppressed thuggishness. And it is the latter women (and gays who while astonishingly small in numbers are beloved by women) respond to — the thuggishness. Look at the journalists response to the revelation that Ferguson MO. dead “teen” Michael Brown was the main suspect in a strong arm robbery of a liquor store just minutes before his fatal shooting. It was uniformly negative. Anyone familiar with women’s responses to Alpha Males and Beta Males will see the pattern. Excuses and justification for Alphas, rage at Betas.

Obama in reality is a poorly closeted guy with serious substance abuse problems and run by his harridan beard/wife and substitute mother Valerie Jarrett. But America still loves the guy because he plays into the Black fantasy of both Alpha urges and dominance (that women crave like a Fifty Shades of Grey bondage novel) combined with non-nerdy (read: White guy) intelligence.

A Black Dem will get 199% of the Black vote (most voting twice!) and about 40-50% of the White vote, most White women and those guys intent on stupidly placating the women in their lives. Plus non-White votes in alliance against White guys. This won’t change until most White guys are somewhere between the fictional Walter White and Don Draper in sexy dominance and avoidance of being nerdy and abstract thinking. Which given White guys innate beta maleness that is genetically hard-wired (because it payed off before the Welfare state and condoms/pill) is unlikely any time soon.

The Baltimore City Detention Center that was such a catastrophe is evidently a state-run facility, and the Governor is…. Also, if you take the medians of a multi-year series, it appears that the frequency of index crimes has declined by about 20% since his time in office office as Mayor of Baltimore (and this applies to most subcategories of index crime). (Interestingly, his immediate successor was jailed on corruption charges).

Red’s has been on heavy rotation on Antenna TV for the last few weeks and I always stop and watch the scenes with Jerzy Kosinski. I didn’t know he was in that movie until now, but the scene where he denies Beatty’s character return to home while reminding him that he will never have another chance to be involved at this point in history again is played perfectly.

I have a working hypothesis to the effect that guys like Julian Castro, Barack Obama, and Bill Clinton, were cultivated for political leadership from a very young age (like their teen years), by people who are essentially part of the intelligence community. This was done in order to to guarantee that no more George McGovern-types ever make it through the primaries ie., any Democrat who reaches the White House can be assured of being someone who’s easily controlled, and otherwise Deep State-friendly (thus permitting us to avoid any unpleasantness, such as we once saw in Dallas). I can’t even come close to proving this, of course…but I don’t think I’m very far off from whatever will eventually turn out to be the truth of the matter.

Gross was actually a tenured professor at New York University, not a ‘small time scholar’ and had published a half-dozen books before Neighbors was published. He was hired away by Princeton two years later with an endowed chair. Both are research universities, it’s just that NYU is 6x larger and much more variegated.

The odd curio about his career is that he has worked in both political science and history faculties even though his degree is in sociology.

It’s purely a coincidence that Obama’s serious post-college girlfriend was the daughter of the #2 man in the Australian equivalent of the CIA (later Australian ambassador to America) and her stepfather was a Democratic power broker in Washington and head legal counsel of a giant mining corporation. That both men focused on Indonesia is just a coincidence.

  28. What Wikipedia reveals about Castro Bros LLC’s godfather is that Henry was around 2o when he figured out that straining yourself with friggin’ aerodynamics is pointless – since a social engineering pays off better:

In his sophomore year, he switched his major from aeronautical engineering to city management. In 1967, Cisneros was selected to attend the annual Student Conference on United States Affairs at West Point[13] where he first learned that U.S. cities were in serious trouble

And Henry walked hard (which btw, to answer Unz’s lecterious imagination, suggests that personal experience of being a Housing Secretary probably resulted with a proper probing of Julian’s closets) to fix that serious trouble:

As the Clinton administration’s top housing official in the mid-1990s, Cisneros loosened mortgage restrictions so first-time buyers could qualify for loans they could never get before, contributing to the great housing and financial crisis that began 10 years later.

Hillary seems to be a lock at this point according to the polls, barring a major economic downturn near election time. Basically she attracts too many whites for the Republicans to win. Back in ’08 she had significant support from lower class and poor whites who are uncomfortable with blacks and minorities like Obama and were less enthusiastic for Obama, but who will support Hillary in an upcoming election.

According to the United Nations, the reason Blacks males in the U.S are 7 times more likely than White males to be murdered by a firearm is because America is an extremely racist country.

But the United Nations forgot to mention that the reason Black males in the U.S are 7 times more likely to be killed is because of other Black males.

Apparently record high Black on Black crime is evidence that the U.S is racist just like old nazi Germany. By that logic, Blacks in the U.S are the new nazis since they terrorize their own communities with their own form of ghetto gangsta Black genocide. Blacks are the new Joseph Goebbels and Adolf Hitler.

Hmm. A dog whistle is a whistle heard only by dogs, as the pitch is too high for human hearing. But Jews seem to hear these metaphorical dog whistles all the time. Are you saying Jews are dogs? Or that anti-semites are dogs? But anti-semites don’t always hear these whistles. This is a conundrum.

“Being There” is hands down my favorite Peter Sellers movie.

I always love this bit about Julian (pronounced hoolian) Castro’s education:

“He graduated from Stanford in 1996 with a bachelors degree in political science and communications. He said he began thinking about entering politics while at Stanford,[4] where he and his brother launched their first campaigns and won student senate seats, tying for the highest number of votes.[2] Castro has credited affirmative action for his admission into Stanford, telling The New York Times, “Joaquín and I got into Stanford because of affirmative action. I scored 1,210 on my SATs, which was lower than the median matriculating student. But I did fine in college and in law school. So did Joaquín. I’m a strong supporter of affirmative action because I’ve seen it work in my own life”.”

His thinking is so self-centered:”See, affirmative action set me up for life, therefore it must be good for America!”

OT: from the Housing Bubble to the Law-School Bubble

    http://www.theatlantic.com/features/archive/2014/08/the-law-school-scam/375069/

The InfiLaw schools achieved this massive growth by taking large numbers of students that almost no other ABA-accredited law school would consider admitting. InfiLaw was—and remains—up-front about this. Its self-described mission is to “establish the benchmark of inclusive excellence in professional education,” by providing access to a traditionally underserved population consisting “in large part of persons from historically disadvantaged groups.” Yet this means accepting many students who, given their low LSAT scores, are unlikely to ever have successful legal careers. In 2010, for example, two of the three InfiLaw schools admitted entering classes with a median LSAT score of 149, while the third had an entering class with a median score of 150. Only 10 of the other 196 schools fully accredited by the ABA had an entering class with a median LSAT score below 150.

The best explanation of Obama’s first 24 years, before he rebelled and went off to Chicago to be Mayor Washington II, is that he was brought up to be a “Muslimist” — the non-Arab equivalent of the WASP Arabists who dominated State Department and NGO dealings with the Arab world until neocons took over. His family and friends and himself, as he told David Maraniss in 2011, foresaw a fine career for himself in the State Department or academia as a go-between between America and some non-Arab heavily Muslim countries, such as Indonesia, Pakistan, and Kenya.

So maybe among native speakers (actual Hispanics) he’ll speak in a weird, impossible-to-place, and thus comic, accent. He’ll go down like Cantinflas in Mexico. I know I want to see it. Hillary and Jules, 2016!

“He looks like the kind of Mexican kid who gets nicknamed “Chino” by his Mexican friends.”

Yeah, if I just saw him on the street I might think that he was half- Filipino.

Villagroisa is still viable as some sort of figurehead or possibly governor. He doesn’t have any huge scandals that we know of, and his latinoness will cover up boinking reporters.

I think Clinton had his way paved by Wall Street. Someone in the comments posted something a few months ago how a few Wall Streeters got together and funded the DNC(?), Clinton and McAulfie. IIRC they looked at Clinton as a kept politician who would be given a lot of behind the scenes support, but didn’t have his own constituencies to support him, or be supported. Perfect for NAFTA and financial deregulation.

A lot of Mexicans have with a heavy dose of Amerindian DNA have smaller Mongoloid eyes and not big o’Caucasoid eyes like the Spaniards.

“Hillary seems to be a lock at this point according to the polls, barring a major economic downturn near election time. Basically she attracts too many whites for the Republicans to win. Back in ’08 she had significant support from lower class and poor whites who are uncomfortable with blacks and minorities like Obama and were less enthusiastic for Obama, but who will support Hillary in an upcoming election.”

Hillary Clinton could can get by with only 39 percent of the White vote just like Hussein Obama did in 2012 and still win the presidential election as long as voters who draw their ancestry back to 3rd world countries come out in record numbers to vote for her like they did with Hussein.

Right, but why assume that it was the CIA or “Deep State”, when there’s less evidence than the evidence for very wealthy and politically influential financiers backing people like Clinton and Obama? The former is also less plausible because of the longer time horizon.

The best explanation of Obama’s first 24 years, before he rebelled and went off to Chicago to be Mayor Washington II, is that he was brought up to be a “Muslimist” —

And in that vein, his mother subcontracts his rearing to her parents in Honolulu. What’s so ‘Muslim’ about selling insurance in a mid-size metropolitan center notable for its tourist industry?

His family and friends and himself, as he told David Maraniss in 2011, foresaw a fine career for himself in the State Department or academia as a go-between between America and some non-Arab heavily Muslim countries, such as Indonesia, Pakistan, and Kenya.

And they thought he’d ace the foreign service exam? His academic record was quite ordinary prior to 1988 and he shows no evidence of being the sort of renaissance man who thinks on his feet the foreign service attempts to recruit with their test batteries.

There’s things ‘funding’ cannot buy (as John Connolly learned in 1980).

  59. Sellers played the Chance/Chauncey character as not just simple but near-catatonic, so that’s another mutation on top of any analogies to the 1932 character who’s a more of a dopey gold-chainer type (an aspect to Walesa there maybe but not an obvious fit). Dyzma is one of those topics Slavs know all about, like Good Soldier Svjek or making plum-mash moonshine, but nobody else has heard of.

I had thought Kosinski was like the Polish import of Joseph Heller reputation-wise, resting on a single right-place-right-time pop novel, until his less-traveled works enjoyed a minor renaissance or vogue in the late 90s. This caused big flare-ups & much to-do on his biography and whether he even knew English by the time of certain publication dates. So I guess he actually was the Julian Castro of his day

  61. I don’t see any natural talent in Castro. He’s an abpve-average speaker but still 2nd-tier. Villaraigosa would be 3rd-tier which ironically makes him more authentic as the Hispanico Standard Bearer but his Slick Tony personal morality nearly erases that. Without powerful backers/investors neither guy would go far.

Obama actually *does* have a native skill for blarney and sounding smart-sounding, in that less-than-meets-the-eye style we’re saddled with nowadays; see also Marco Rubio or Wendy Davis
