Screenshot 2018-02-11 17.58.51Barstool Sports dug up this 1991 story about Mike Tirico, the NBC sports announcer who has inherited Bob Costas’s job as anchorman of the Olympics:

Hold The Phone – Mike Tirico Isn’t Black?

Post-Standard, The (Syracuse, NY)
May 30, 1991

Local African-American groups often invite him to speak during Black History Month and on other occasions, viewing Tirico as a prominent example of a successful black professional. He doesn’t mind speaking, Tirico tells them, but he also lets them know a fact of his life: He’s not sure he’s black. “When people go around and say, ‘You are black’ – well, I don’t encourage it, but by the same token I don’t back off of it,” he says. “If you want to call me that, that’s fine. But, you know, in my whole family, there’s nobody I know who is black.”

Raised in Queens Michael Todd Tirico grew up in a middle-class Italian family in Queens, about a five-minute drive from Shea Stadium. Tirico’s parents, Donald and Maria, were separated when he was about 4, and he says he has since lost contact with his father’s side of the family.

Tirico is an only child. Because of his dark skin and ethnic features, Tirico says, most people assume he is black. But he’s seen pictures of his father, his father’s mother and his father’s sister – all of whom are white, Tirico says. “The only contact I had growing up was with my mom’s side of the family. And they are all as white as the refrigerator I’m standing in front of right now,” Tirico says … Someday, he says, he plans to do genealogical research to find out if he has a black ancestor, but it’s not something he considers a pressing issue.

It’s easy to come up with theories, like maybe your mom hasn’t been wholly frank about why her husband walked out. Lots of families have secrets. For example, it’s not wholly rare for people of a certain age to find out that their big sister who is 17 or so years older than them is really their mom (e.g., Jack Nicholson, Bobby Darin).

But let’s look at Mike Tirico instead as an example of how rare it is in modern non-Hispanic America for somebody who appears to be kind of black not to claim to be black. I won’t call him “the exception that proves the rule” because that always triggers a lot of people, such as a certain federal judge, who want to explain that, logically, an exception can’t prove a rule. So I will call Tirico an example of somebody whose famous exceptionalness to the general tendency offers support for the tendency.

The tendency is that people who are significantly black by ancestry seldom self-identify as white in recent decades (assuming they aren’t from some culture like Latin America where that is encouraged). This in contradiction to the popular theory of White Privilege.

Some of that is for Flight From White reasons, but another big reason is that there just aren’t that many people in Anglo-America who are kinda, sorta black enough to go either way, due to the workings of the One Drop Rule. As I blogged in 2014:

The 23andMe numbers suggest that for the average white American, 1 of your 512 ancestors nine generations ago was black and 1 of 512 was Native American.

Here’s another way to think of it. If the average self-identified black is 73.2% black and the average self-identified white is 0.19% black, then the average black in America is 385 times blacker than the average white.

A commenter adds:

And here is another way of thinking about it: The average white American is about ten times more Neanderthal than Sub-Saharan black.

Africans have virtually no Neanderthal ancestry so African-American Neanderthal ancestry is, on average, in proportion to their white ancestry.

  1. I don’t think Tirico “passes” as Italian-American. There are some fairly dark complected Calabrese or Sicilians, but none with the complexion of Tirico (nor his woolen hair).

This was a PBS dealo a while back with what is probably a pretty similar situation to what really happened, all apologies to Momma Tirico if there is another explanation exculpating her:

Obviously, his mother was impregnated by a black man who was 75-100% negroid. He looks far more "black" that Vanessa Williams, our "first black Miss America," who is surely 70-80% white, a quadroon wwith green eyes, straight medium-brown hair, and yellowish light brown skin who looks far more like Salma Hayak and Hoda Kobt and Mariah Carey than Maxine Watters and Michelle Obama and Whoopie Goldberg.

  2. If he wants to identify as Italian I think it would be a big step forward if people just took him at his word/preference. I mean, like a lot of people of mixed ancestry he may just have more cultural affinity for his Italian family and that’s his choice. I certainly know a lot of people who favor one element of their background more than others and there isn’t really anything wrong with that.

It's kind of jarring at first, a square built black guy taking lead mic at the Winter Games, but he's got skill and that's the world we live in. My mother asks "Who's he?" I say, "the new color commentator for the Olympics, ma, roll with it." It's all good. If Koreans are quiet and not shipping out random rockets to remind us how they don't really give a fuck about our $20 trillion navy, it's all good to me. Cool and crisp, skates on ice.

There's a Celtic phenotype, probably more typical of the Breton French or Galicians that is quite dark in complexion with dark hair - but not Mediterranean olive in skin tone - that is not uncommon among the Irish: i.e. Colin Farrell or Sean Connery.

Dude, Tirico is at least as black-appearing as Roy Campanella, whose father was a Sicilian immigrant and whose mother was a black American:

Tirico is half black in the American sense - half white and half mixed African/European/Amerindian ancestry. I don't mean to rub it in if he's in denial, but he ain't no full blooded Sicilian or Calabrese.
    , @Jenner Ickham Errican
That’s a cherry-picked artificially high-key photo from an angle that obscures them nostrils. You’d look more honest linking to a broad image search with various angles and lighting: Mike Tirico. But then bye bye first paragraph.

No way is he fully 'real' Italian or even Sicilian.

No one would ever say he is fully Ashkenazi or Sephardic Jewish. Those two ethnicities are the best proxies for the non European/Mediterranean genetic substrate in southern Italians.
His skin is brown rather than 'olive'. His features are coarse and sharp etc etc...definitely not a 'gracile Mediterranean Caucasian'.

  14. The phrase “the example that proves the rule” is widely misunderstood.

It uses the earlier alternative meaning of “prove” as “to test.”

Right. In Spanish "probar" and "prueba" mean both "to prove" (in the modern connatation) and "to test, sample, taste, try" (the verbs) as well as "proof" and "test, sample, taste, try' (the nouns), respectively. Latin and other Romance languages have similar cognates.
    , @gunner29
I could never get my head around that 'exception proves the rule', now I know why....
    , @Erik L
I thought the idea was that listing the exceptions tells you the boundaries of the rule. So if the rule on the sign says "no parking after 12 midnight and before 6 AM weekdays" that implies legally that it is ok to park there any other time

  16. “The exception proves the rule” comes from a fuller quotation from Cicero: ‘exceptio probat regulum in casibus non exceptis’ (or similar, I’m on my phone), meaning “the exception proves the rule in cases not excepted”. For example, a sign reading “no right turn on red” shows that, in general, you *can* make a right on red. Otherwise you wouldn’t need to post the special exception.

It’s tricky because there are several distinct concepts and heuristics that all seem like they could go by “the exception proves the rule”, but only one expression.

A classic example of why women cannot be tribal defenders as they cannot clearly distinguish the need to remove infiltrators, even when obviously phenotypically different, from the host country. The first thing that the alt-right have to do after succeeding is to remove women from any public position where they can pass on that type of wimpy boomer-attitude of "let's all get along with people genetically are meant to destroy us."
    , @Anonymous

But let’s look at Mike Tirico instead as an example of how rare it is in ... for somebody who appears to be kind of black not to claim to be black.

Well, he still gets to keep his affirmitive-action job as a famous tv personality in spite of his renunciation of blackness. It's not like he was fired immediately afterwards and replaced with a "real" black.
    , @Jeremy Cooper
You know, I may have been the only person on earth who noticed this, but a a few years ago the NBA or some network put out this list of the highest scoring Latino players in history. Spaniard Pao Gasol was on it, and some stupid internet outrage developed. I was watching an NBA game, and I saw Tirico bring this up and say that in has opinion Gasol shouldn't be on that list.

I checked the internet real quick and couldn't find any evidence of that comment. But I remember being struck at the time that he had to be a real identity politics weasel to take that position. Knowing that he goes around claiming to be black without knowing makes the whole episode seem even weirder.

But Switzerland as an exception is famous for its exceptionalness.

It's like Beethoven is famous for being a deaf composer, which suggests that most composers aren't deaf.

How many painters are famous for being blind? I can't think of any, although Monet's eyesight got very bad. So I don't think there are many, maybe none.

On the other hand, how many painters down through history have gone deaf? Beats me. But the lack of painters being famous for being deaf is probably due to their being more than a few in old age ...

David Hockney is deaf, and that indeed comes up, but mostly because, I'm guessing, he just talks nonstop through the interview about whatever he feels like and the interviewer puts in the part about him being deaf to explain to his editor why the Grand Old Man of English painting didn't answer the questions they'd talked about being sure to ask him. Or something.

Switzerland is not a nation. Ever hear of a Swiss nationalist or Swiss nationalism? However Switzerland is a country that works. It works because the Swiss have no alliances, mind their own business, avoid wars, make it extremely difficult to obtain citizenship and have very little, if any, immigration. Or the exact opposite of the 'invade the world, invite the world' strategy of the USA.

Also those four official languages mean very little, because the Swiss, unlike Canadians practice a very strict territorial unilingualism in contrast to Canada's sub-continental wide bilingualism.

One of the risks of enjoying sex with a black man seems to be the higher probability of getting pregnant compared to sex with a white man. That conclusion is just a folk belief, but I have heard it a lot. I wonder if it has to do with sperm competition.
This paper doesn't specifically deal with ejaculate potency by race, but it does explain why men with higher potency are less concerned with mate guarding, and are more likely to follow a "fire-and-forget" sex strategy, which folk belief says is commoner among blacks than other races.
"We found that men who performed fewer mate guarding behaviors produced higher quality ejaculates, having a greater concentration of sperm, a higher percentage of motile sperm and sperm that swam faster and less erratically."
However, a study that did look at differences by race reported:
"Semen parameters were very similar between Hispanic/Latino and White men, but Black men had significantly lower values for semen volume and sperm concentration. Percent motile sperm was also slightly lower in Black men. Consequently total sperm count and total motile sperm count were almost 50% lower for Black men compared to men in the other two groups (P<0.0001). The percentage of men with semen volume, sperm concentration and total sperm count below current WHO reference values (WHO, 2010) was greater for Black men compared to White and Hispanic/Latino men." (Semen Parameters in Fertile US Men)
So maybe the folk belief that a black man will get you pregnant like that may just be an attempt to discourage such couplings. And it makes puzzling the common folk belief that black men don't stick around after sex.
However, it's been show that if a woman orgasms during sex her likelihood of becoming pregnant increases.
"There was a significant difference in semen retention between the orgasm (M=4.08, SD=0.17) and non-orgasm (M=3.30, SD=0.22) conditions; t (5)=7.02, p=0.001. Cohen's d=3.97, effect size r=0.89." Measuring sperm back flow following female orgasm.
So are white women more likely to orgasm with black men, perhaps more than once during a single sex act, and thus be more likely to get pregnant? If so, why? Maybe it's just psychological. Or maybe it's that other common folk belief about black men.
Sorry to riff off your comment like this, but it did get me thinking. (^_^)

  45. The tendency is that people who are significantly black by ancestry seldom self-identify as white in recent decades (assuming they aren’t from some culture like Latin America where that is encouraged). This in contradiction to the popular theory of White Privilege.

The US federal courts often define Afro ethnicity using the traceable amount rule.

As necessary, the Federal government will use ethnic-racial data found on the birth records of Tirico and his ancestors to help define his ethnicity.

Identifying who or what is an Afro is necessary so that the federal government can accurately dispense federal entitlements that are Afro-specific, e.g. affirmative action, 8a contracts, hate speech crime prosecution.

It means that if you get to define your own terms.

I've commonly asked on this and other forums for the definition of "who is white."

Some of the groups I've had cited as "not really white" include:
    Jews (very popular)
    Greeks
    Italians
Portuguese (likely some medieval intermixture with early imported African slaves)
    Afghans
    Armenians
    Hungarians
    Finns
    Persians
    Russians
    Irish (!)
    Berbers
    Arabs
    etc., etc.

About the only groups always classified as "white," in my experience, are the Nordics, Germans, Dutch and English.

  50. OT:

I wonder if Richard Parsons is the half black son of John Rockefeller Jr. or one of his sons, most likely Nelson. Parsons is the former chairman of Citigroup and Time Warner and the current interim CEO of the Los Angeles Clippers. Parsons is the supposedly the grandson of John Jr.’s gardener and the Rockefellers have shown an interest in him that afaik didn’t extend to his siblings.

Parsons was born on April 4, 1948 and John Jr.’s wife Abby died April 5, 1948. Hearing that her husband or son just had a child with a black woman would have been enough to kill her. Sending the child to be raised by the gardener’s daughter would have been the rational decision.

Parsons supposedly dropped out of high school at age 16 and earned a GED, but most sources say he graduated. (LINK) Since John Jr.’s mother founded Spelman College, the logical place to send a black male protégé: would have been Morehouse College, but Parsons went to the University of Hawaii instead, where in obscurity he could lie and reinvent himself as a varsity basketball player.

Married and without receiving a bachelor’s degree, Parsons enrolled in Albany Law School and graduated first in his class while working part-time as a janitor and as an aide in the State Assembly.

Parsons took the New York state bar exam, and scored the highest in the state, beating out all the high-achieving Ivy Leaguers that year. It may have been a complete coincidence, but Nelson Rockefeller’s right-hand man, Harry Albright, was in charge of both the law school internship program with the governor, and in charge of scoring the New York state bar exams.

I’m going by memory, but I think that Parsons handled the private affairs for both Nelson Rockefeller and his widow Happy. In Happy’s 2015 obituary, Parsons is referred to as a “long-time friend”.

But, my fave, grandpa, is Jasper. By far, a better painter than all the other dreck posers from his age group. I am so happy that shitty art has been “daggered.” Most Modernists – they were shitty and could not draw a dog if they were forced to: draw a dog, right now, in art class. I, also, met Jasper, who allowed no one to interview him….Haha…we are still in touch! He’s too old to travel to difficult places…but he is the only decent Artist to be remembered from the 70′s. Yeah, I guess it really is personal for me. F*ck you all :)

If he had pale skin we wouldn't be saying anything and who ever heard of a dusky Italian? He could just tan pretty bad. This photograph makes him look Southern Italian/Sicilian.

No way is he fully ‘real’ Italian or even Sicilian.

No one would ever say he is fully Ashkenazi or Sephardic Jewish. Those two ethnicities are the best proxies for the non European/Mediterranean genetic substrate in southern Italians.
His skin is brown rather than ‘olive’. His features are coarse and sharp etc etc…definitely not a ‘gracile Mediterranean Caucasian’.

I doubt he is known outside of New Jersey, but former Rutgers and Jets starting QB Ray Lucas is mulatto with two white parents. Ray was conceived while his dad was in Vietnam. Ray grew up in Harrison, right across the Passaic River from Newark.

Ray Lucas is mulatto with two white parents. Ray was conceived while his dad was in Vietnam.

One of the risks of enjoying sex with a black man seems to be the higher probability of getting pregnant compared to sex with a white man. That conclusion is just a folk belief, but I have heard it a lot. I wonder if it has to do with sperm competition.
This paper doesn’t specifically deal with ejaculate potency by race, but it does explain why men with higher potency are less concerned with mate guarding, and are more likely to follow a “fire-and-forget” sex strategy, which folk belief says is commoner among blacks than other races.
“We found that men who performed fewer mate guarding behaviors produced higher quality ejaculates, having a greater concentration of sperm, a higher percentage of motile sperm and sperm that swam faster and less erratically.”
However, a study that did look at differences by race reported:
“Semen parameters were very similar between Hispanic/Latino and White men, but Black men had significantly lower values for semen volume and sperm concentration.
And it makes puzzling the common folk belief that black men don’t stick around after sex.
However, it’s been show that if a woman orgasms during sex her likelihood of becoming pregnant increases.
“There was a significant difference in semen retention between the orgasm (M=4.08, SD=0.17) and non-orgasm (M=3.30, SD=0.22) conditions; t (5)=7.02, p=0.001. Cohen’s d=3.97, effect size r=0.89.” Measuring sperm back flow following female orgasm.
So are white women more likely to orgasm with black men, perhaps more than once during a single sex act, and thus be more likely to get pregnant? If so, why? Maybe it’s just psychological. Or maybe it’s that other common folk belief about black men.
Sorry to riff off your comment like this, but it did get me thinking. (^_^)

Uh, ok, women get pregnant to white men, black men, asian men, etc. Probability has little to do with it as much as what time during the individual's monthly ovulation cycle. Last one checked, the US Census tells us that there are more white people than there are black people, so white people had to have gotten here somehow.

Dude. Read a book for goodness sakes.

    , @ben tillman

So maybe the folk belief that a black man will get you pregnant like that may just be an attempt to discourage such couplings.

No, it's a response to the fact that the black guy will TRY to get you pregnant, while white guys will generally try not to, and white girls will expect the black guys not to try. In other words, the black guy WILL get you pregnant "like that".

And it makes puzzling the common folk belief that black men don’t stick around after sex.

How so? They don't. Ninety percent of babies fathered by blacks with women of another race are born out of wedlock.

This raises the question of when exactly the Mezzogiorno started to (comparatively) suck: was it before the end of antiquity, or at some point in the Middle Ages, or even later? I've heard competing theories, ranging from monarchy vs. city states to genetic influx from the South to the Northern Italian political elites raping the place after reunification.

Steve, you obviously haven't traveled throughout the peninsula. Your suggestion that the South is less productive and less cultured than the North is exaggerated, you should get out more. Besides even the areas controlled by the mafia are clean and orderly. And also I would like to remind you that large swathes of the mainland of Italy were never colonized by anyone other than indengous italic populations. So crediting the Norths industrious to non italic origins is ignorant of history when in fact it was due too heavy population movements from the South that provided human capital for the North.

I thought this was settled law; the meaning of "prove" in use here is "test." As in "proving grounds." Is the argument that if it's an exception, the rule ipso facto doesn't apply?

I’ve always thought that “the exception that proves the rule” was a tongue-in-cheek deduction based on the aphorism “there’s an exception to every rule.” The existence of an exception proves that it’s a rule. If there were no exception, it couldn’t be a rule.

Maybe she is ashamed by a mistake she made as a young woman, or maybe her husband was a terrible and abusive person, but who knows? Tirico’s claimed lack of interest in the subject seems doubtful. A 23andme test would tell him in a few weeks for less than $100. My bet is that he is protecting his mother, a very Italian thing to do and I think commendable since it is clear he would have been tempted to play the race card early in his career.

    Hi, Jim,
I think you were on the Nimitz when this happened:
Most of the 14 sailors and marines killed May 26, 1981, when a Marine EA-6B Prowler jet fighter plane crashed on the deck of the aircraft carrier Nimitz had traces of illicit drugs in their systems.
I can't see how, even if they did, it had any influence on what happened, because, according to the crash report, the cause was the pilot ignoring a wave-off because he didn't have enough gas for a go-around. I think the drug allegation was a red herring to obscure some other problems with flight operations. I have a relative who was serving with CARAIRWING EIGHT at the time, but has never said much about it. What do you think?
Oh, right, a big piston. Yeah. That'll do it! (-‿⌒)

There are no non-European Whites. White means "of European stock." Folks need to find some other word for "Caucasoid" or "Caucasian," or just use Caucasoid or Caucasian. Possible exceptions just outside Europe, in west Asia, aren't enough to justify changing this rule (same goes for exceptions inside Europe).

On this one, you and the Arab American activists who are trying to get their own nonwhite census category for the gibs are in agreement. And you are both wrong.

Many people from the Middle East are whiter in skin color than many people from Europe. Just look at that fake teenage Palestinian “activist” Ahed Tahimi, who is in the news now. She could be on the 1968 Swedish bikini team. If the tern white, referring to skin color, is to have any meaning, then the boundaries cannot be confined to Europe.

Many is too vague a word in this context, it is more accurate to say that most people in the Middle East (as in easily over 95%) are not white, likewise it is safe to say that most native European are white looking (again easily over 95%).

White implies European, it does not imply Middle Eastern (Israel included).

"Many people from the middle east are whiter in skin color than many people from Europe". (You then go on to provide us with one single cherry picked example).

Yeah sure sport. If your definition of "many" is one or two percent. My definition of many is 30%+. Once you get over 50% you can simply use the word most.

"..the term white...cannot be confined to Europe".

Having travelled extensively around the world and not needing a pair of glasses, I beg to differ.
    , @Jenner Ickham Errican

If the term white, referring to skin color, is to have any meaning, then the boundaries cannot be confined to Europe.

    Question begging alert! whoop whoop

Svigor clearly wasn’t referring to mere skin color. The term “white” is a racial term, not a Pantone palette number. It refers to those of European blood, in Europe and beyond, whose skin (like that of other races) can be of various tones and hues.

… Ahed Tahimi, who is in the news now. She could be on the 1968 Swedish bikini team.

Your example of Ahed Tamimi is amusing because although she is quite pale, she somewhat resembles a racially black African albino. Tamimi’s naturally wild hair, large nostrils, and funky face architecture is most certainly not typically Swedish.

Race, of course, physically (visually) manifests in qualities beyond skin color. Bone structure, hair type, musculature, flesh (e.g. lip and eyelid shape) all can reveal race to those who ‘notice.’ Perhaps you (like the satirical ‘Steven Colbert’) “don’t see race.” ;)

The nice places to live in Northern Italy seem like the ones invaded by the Gauls in about 390 BC, while the more mafioso regions seem like the old Greek colonies: lots of talent but dumb Sicilian Expedition-type self-destructive decision-making.

This raises the question of when exactly the Mezzogiorno started to (comparatively) suck: was it before the end of antiquity, or at some point in the Middle Ages, or even later? I’ve heard competing theories, ranging from monarchy vs. city states to genetic influx from the South to the Northern Italian political elites raping the place after reunification.

    Thanks.

Africans have virtually no Neanderthal ancestry so African-American Neanderthal ancestry is, on average, in proportion to their white ancestry.

Murray, and I believe yourself, has suggested that a more definitive way of measuring the connection between race and IQ would be to measure IQ and racial genetic background except that wouldn’t be allowed. Wouldn’t the measure of Neanderthal and IQ be a proxy way to do that?

Tirico kinda resembles Brooklyn C HOF Roy Campanella, who clearly had Italian ancestry (Campanella? Come on). Roy was quite light skinned and in some photos can “pass” for being swarthy or Mediterranean White.

Regarding average whites having a percentage of black ancestry, seem to recall that Steve later revised that statement downward, as in, the average American white has about a ca.98% less likelihood of having any black ancestry whatsoever, whereas the average black will have roughly between ca.15-45% white admixture.

I mean, for example, take Jewish Americans. Most did not intermix with blacks during the Antebellum period, so there’s next to nil chance that they contain any black admixture. The later arrivals, (Ellis Island) concentrated mainly in NY, and thus were also not very likely to intermix with blacks as Jews tended to keep to their own neighborhoods.

Throughout most of its history, Americans were pretty much not going around mixing with blacks in any significant amount. Obviously it happened, but not to the extent that Henry Louis Gates would have one to believe. Example: for most of the Antebellum period most whites didn’t own slaves and during Jim Crow era the races were mostly segregated. Therefore, there was little to no chance of intermixing the genes between the races.

Blacks have lots of white blood, so it's inaccurate to say the races didn't mix. It's just that very few of those who now identify as white have any, much less significant, intermixture of African ancestry.

I think you are referring to the black guy not using a condom...? That could be, and also being more aggressive and brushing aside objections from his partner.
Mere aggressiveness by the man seems to increase the chances of pregnancy, clearly seen in the most aggressive form of intercourse:
Per-incident rape-pregnancy rates exceed per-incident consensual pregnancy rates by a sizable margin, even before adjusting for the use of relevant forms of birth control.
Apparently, aggressive sex is more likely to cause a woman to orgasm and orgasming enhances the likelihood of pregnancy. This is a taboo subject, certainly among feminist theorists. But what research has been done seems to indicate that it may be true.

For some of the same reasons industrialisation passed by tropical areas and also why Nordic nations punch well above their weight vis-a-vis science and technology: cold weather encourages modernisation for comfort and shelter, whilst also encouraging people to spend time indoors in laboratories and tinkering with computers and such. In Sicily (or Mexico, etc.) it's easier to do without complex steam-plants and furnaces; electric light in long, dark winters; etc. – and easier and more tempting to do less productive stuff outside (socialisation by walking from place to place in balmier weather, sports and picnics at the beach or park, etc.).

Go back and re-read what I wrote. I wrote that OBVIOUSLY mixing occured, but not to the extent that SJWs, Libs, etc would have one to believe.

Since blacks have never outnumbered whites in the US, its fairly obvious that any mixing will directly affect their genes across their race on a wider level than it will with whites.

Example: Blacks has you noted have ca.20% white admixture in their genetic makeup. Yet, for about ca. 96% of all whites in the US, they have ca.0% (roughly speaking) of black genes. You simply don't find very many all white families with children of about 20% black genes. Doesn't happen.

    Why?

Because: most whites did not own slaves, and during Jim Crow, the two races were mostly segregated. Therefore whites didn't have opportunities to mingle and jingle with the opposite race. Also, as in the case of Jews, who largely migrated to the US after the Civil War and to cities such as NY, they stuck largely to their own neighborhoods which tended to be largely black free.

In other words, the large cohort of blacks that have ca.20% or more of white genes tended to have ancestors who were slaves and thus would have had the opportunity to mix with whites, even though most whites themselves didn't own slaves, and were largely segregrated from blacks on a personal level.

e.g. regarding whites, for the most part the Kim Kardashian thing of jingling and mingling is of a fairly recent thing in time.

There were some people in the city's substantial Portuguese community with his coloration, but they were actually Brazilian.

I did, My uncle was probably twice as dark as my mother. He married a full blood Italian lady and their kids looked as dark or even darker than Tirico.

Simple hydraulics. Bigger piston, bigger load dealt out at the cervix. Then, some more piston action after the load is delivered. How can it miss?

    Hi, Jim,
I think you were on the Nimitz when this happened:
Most of the 14 sailors and marines killed May 26, 1981, when a Marine EA-6B Prowler jet fighter plane crashed on the deck of the aircraft carrier Nimitz had traces of illicit drugs in their systems.
I can’t see how, even if they did, it had any influence on what happened, because, according to the crash report, the cause was the pilot ignoring a wave-off because he didn’t have enough gas for a go-around. I think the drug allegation was a red herring to obscure some other problems with flight operations. I have a relative who was serving with CARAIRWING EIGHT at the time, but has never said much about it. What do you think?
Oh, right, a big piston. Yeah. That’ll do it! (-‿⌒)

Bad night. Ugly. Not Forestall-ugly, but ugly. However, the official NAVAIRSYSCOM report never faulted the bravery of anyone concerned, the drug testing was part of autopsies. But it ended all notions of the Constitutionality of random, mandatory drug testing for the military. Reagan's SecDef ordered random testing a couple of months after the crash, give or take. I was off active duty by that point and they weren't drug testing at the NAVAIR Reserve unit at Andrews, yet, I felt so left out. I couldn't get shore duty and even with the promise of 1st Class PO for a 4 year re-up for sea duty, I decided enough already. Of course, I took up a 45 year motorcycle habit that isn't kicked to this day, so I don't know why I was such a pussy about another 4 years at sea on top of 5 and change, heh..

Were you out there, Who? I ran into a guy at the VA here in Boston, he was a medical Corpsman at NAS Jax, he flew aboard on helos to help get guys off the ship, burns and whatnot, and over to Jax. Several guys I kept up with for awhile are all dead of various cancers today, most of them from asbestos. They were sick for years, couldn't get a lick of help from the VA. I've got the nodules, VA says they're asbestos-related, I'll likely die before they ever grant a claim on it. I always figured something would get me but here I sit. They marked me with a condition they won't compensate me for, appeals pending..The VA is really reprehensible.

    , @Jim Christian
By the way, yeah, I was out there, but down in the hangar with a helper craning seats out of a plane for 180-day inspection when the festivities occurred. Went up afterwards to safe the seats on planes we had that were damaged, help drag debris overboard and such the next morning. I left active duty in July that year, left the Reserves out of Andrews in 1982. If you were looking for a hero's tale, sorry about that, but others were pretty ballsy, and of course, some got killed for their trouble.

    As you were.

It means that if you get to define your own terms.

I’ve commonly asked on this and other forums for the definition of “who is white.”

Some of the groups I’ve had cited as “not really white” include:
    Jews (very popular)
    Greeks
    Italians
Portuguese (likely some medieval intermixture with early imported African slaves)
    Afghans
    Armenians
    Hungarians
    Finns
    Persians
    Russians
    Irish (!)
    Berbers
    Arabs
    etc., etc.

About the only groups always classified as “white,” in my experience, are the Nordics, Germans, Dutch and English.

“One of the risks of enjoying sex with a black man seems to be the higher probability of getting pregnant compared to sex with a white man.”

Uh, ok, women get pregnant to white men, black men, asian men, etc. Probability has little to do with it as much as what time during the individual’s monthly ovulation cycle. Last one checked, the US Census tells us that there are more white people than there are black people, so white people had to have gotten here somehow.

Tread, lightly, dear friend: on this one, you are all wrong. Mike Tirico is a wonderful person and someone who is exactly what the world needs: non-identity -non-grievance collector; non-asshole; - if goin' Jersey and all, with talk, right now. He is a friend; whoa and all, not tryin' to brag - just stating a fact.

Just don't. You can't make assumptions of every non-white...because it is futile - plus, it can backfire. Like I said: Mike is a friend</. Sorry, babe.

You know, I may have been the only person on earth who noticed this, but a a few years ago the NBA or some network put out this list of the highest scoring Latino players in history. Spaniard Pao Gasol was on it, and some stupid internet outrage developed. I was watching an NBA game, and I saw Tirico bring this up and say that in has opinion Gasol shouldn’t be on that list.

I checked the internet real quick and couldn’t find any evidence of that comment. But I remember being struck at the time that he had to be a real identity politics weasel to take that position. Knowing that he goes around claiming to be black without knowing makes the whole episode seem even weirder.

“the exception that proves the rule” because that always triggers a lot of people, such as a certain federal judge, who want to explain that, logically, an exception can’t prove a rule."

But it can certainly demonstrate that the rule is in working order.

Tirico kinda resembles Brooklyn C HOF Roy Campanella, who clearly had Italian ancestry (Campanella? Come on). Roy was quite light skinned and in some photos can "pass" for being swarthy or Mediterranean White.

Most did not intermix with blacks during the Antebellum period, so there's next to nil chance that they contain any black admixture.

Example: for most of the Antebellum period most whites didn't own slaves and during Jim Crow era the races were mostly segregated. Therefore, there was little to no chance of intermixing the genes between the races.

Blacks have lots of white blood, so it’s inaccurate to say the races didn’t mix. It’s just that very few of those who now identify as white have any, much less significant, intermixture of African ancestry.

Mere aggressiveness by the man seems to increase the chances of pregnancy, clearly seen in the most aggressive form of intercourse:

Apparently, aggressive sex is more likely to cause a woman to orgasm and orgasming enhances the likelihood of pregnancy. This is a taboo subject, certainly among feminist theorists. But what research has been done seems to indicate that it may be true.

This was a PBS dealo a while back with what is probably a pretty similar situation to what really happened, all apologies to Momma Tirico if there is another explanation exculpating her:

He looks far more “black” that Vanessa Williams, our “first black Miss America,” who is surely 70-80% white, a quadroon wwith green eyes, straight medium-brown hair, and yellowish light brown skin who looks far more like Salma Hayak and Hoda Kobt and Mariah Carey than Maxine Watters and Michelle Obama and Whoopie Goldberg.

The phrase “the example that proves the rule” is widely misunderstood.

It uses the earlier alternative meaning of “prove” as “to test.”

The phrase just means “this exception tests the rule.”

Right. In Spanish “probar” and “prueba” mean both “to prove” (in the modern connatation) and “to test, sample, taste, try” (the verbs) as well as “proof” and “test, sample, taste, try’ (the nouns), respectively. Latin and other Romance languages have similar cognates.

No, it’s a response to the fact that the black guy will TRY to get you pregnant, while white guys will generally try not to, and white girls will expect the black guys not to try. In other words, the black guy WILL get you pregnant “like that”.

And it makes puzzling the common folk belief that black men don’t stick around after sex.

Right, they don't. What I was trying to get at, and didn't' succeed too well, was ... according to the research, white men are actually much more potent than black men, even though folk belief has it that black men are the super studs. So I was thinking that, this being true, and other research showing that men with high potency don't seem to bother much with mate guarding, it should be white men who abandon women and black men who stick around to guard them and ensure any offspring are theirs. But, as you say, that's not the case. It's the virile white men who don't rape and who, as a general rule, stay with the women they impregnate.
And why don't they mate-guard their women and don't care if they strut around in public in miniskirts and tank tops? Probably because they don't have to. Research reveals very low rates of cuckoldry in the West. For example:
Low historical rates of cuckoldry in a Western European human population traced by Y-chromosome and genealogical data.
And here is Razib Khan's thorough look at the subject:
The paternity myth: the rarity of cuckoldry.
    Key graf:
"What are the real numbers? [They're] in the 1-5% range, with 3.7% being a high-bound figure for one study. This varies by culture and socioeconomic group, and the segment of the population being surveyed. Studies which rely on a data set consisting of men who have requested paternity tests are strongly sample-biased toward those who have a reason to have suspicions. It’s somewhat like some of the critiques of the Kinsey Reports and deviant sexual behavior; if you survey sexual deviants (however you define that) to get a sense of the proportion of deviancy in the population you’re going to get a higher than representative figure. And yet even in the cases of men who have suspicions only a minority have misattributed paternity."
Of course, with birth control, a lot of unrecordable infidelity could be going on, and it does seem to be true that younger generations are more casual about sex than older ones.
But, still, white men, as a rule, don't really have to worry about being cuckolds, and can let their girls flaunt their hotness -- they still keep their legs crossed when push comes to shove ... so to speak. ScarletNumber's original post, which caught my attention, was about an exception to this, and, to me, an outrageous one: A man serving in a war zone should not have this happen to him.

As an aside, I know a person working on an advanced degree who is studying security camera footage of rapes -- street rapes, as she calls them, not Harvey Weinstein stuff, where a passing woman is assaulted (the rapists are invariably black, the women non-black, almost always white). One interesting point is that the time from the initial attack to the man strolling away -- yes, they casually walk off, they don't run -- is about three to four minutes. Hard to imagine that a woman surprised, punched violently several times -- eye socket broken quite often, nose, too, often the jaw, as well -- could experience sexual pleasure under such conditions and in such a short time. If she does -- why? What would be the evolutionary advantage? Data seem to indicate this can be the case. I don't get it.
Sorry for the long response. TMI, no doubt. (^_^)

I should have included a longer excerpt to make it clear what they were reporting:

"Using data on birth control usage from 'The Statistical Abstract of the United States,' we then form an estimate of rape-pregnancy rates adjusted for the substantial number of women in our sample who would have been protected by oral contraception or an IUD."

Then follows the sentence I quoted from the study:

"Per-incident rape-pregnancy rates exceed per-incident consensual-pregnancy rates by a sizable margin, even before adjusting for the use of relevant forms of birth control."

After the adjustment for women using birth control, the rate of pregnancy from rape increased: a woman not using birth control who was raped was much more likely to conceive than a woman who was not raped, but was having consensual sex with a husband or boyfriend.
This is a controversial finding and has been attacked by those who find it unsettling. But it does point out that rape can be much worse than the mere physical assault. The woman who discovers she is pregnant from the rape has to make the decision whether to have an abortion or not, and then endure all that ensues, physically and emotionally, whichever choice she makes.

Believe it or not, but Sweden, Norway and Iceland were poorer, than southern Italy in the late 19th century.
For whatever reason, the industrial revolution passed southern Italy by.

In Sicily (or Mexico, etc.) it’s easier to do without complex steam-plants and furnaces; electric light in long, dark winters; etc. – and easier and more tempting to do less productive stuff outside (socialisation by walking from place to place in balmier weather, sports and picnics at the beach or park, etc.).

Uh, ok, women get pregnant to white men, black men, asian men, etc. Probability has little to do with it as much as what time during the individual's monthly ovulation cycle. Last one checked, the US Census tells us that there are more white people than there are black people, so white people had to have gotten here somehow.

Africans have virtually no Neanderthal ancestry so African-American Neanderthal ancestry is, on average, in proportion to their white ancestry.

Murray, and I believe yourself, has suggested that a more definitive way of measuring the connection between race and IQ would be to measure IQ and racial genetic background except that wouldn't be allowed. Wouldn't the measure of Neanderthal and IQ be a proxy way to do that?

Neanderthal intelligence is a bit different from sapiens sapiens intelligence.

All the judges, presidents, senators attorneys and Congress critters who desegregated the schools, passed the 1964 civil rights act, the 1965 non White immigration act the 1968 affirmative action act, established the EEOC and comparable state agencies and ruled against hiring Whites in the Griggs and Kaiser cases were all men, heavily Jewish, but men.

There was one Jewish woman an attorney and the plaintiff in Brown vs Topeka, and a couple women Congress critters who voted for the civil rights immigration and affirmative action acts, but the 1956 to 1973 destruction of Whites was a 99.9 percent male project.

I feel some sympathy for families like his. Obviously Tirico's father is black, and now his mother's private business is known to all. Maybe she is ashamed by a mistake she made as a young woman, or maybe her husband was a terrible and abusive person, but who knows? Tirico's claimed lack of interest in the subject seems doubtful. A 23andme test would tell him in a few weeks for less than $100. My bet is that he is protecting his mother, a very Italian thing to do and I think commendable since it is clear he would have been tempted to play the race card early in his career. Turns out he didn't need to.

Tirico didn’t HAVE to play to play the race card. It was face up like the ace of spades at a blackjack table.

Exceptions never "prove" a rule in the sense that "prove" is used almost exclusively today except perhaps for a few gray haired high school geometry teachers somewhere. They often test a rule.

For instance, _A_ nation has _A_ language. However, Switzerland has four official languages.
So, is Switzerland not a nation?

Switzerland is an unusual nation because it is actually a confederation of several different groups with some differences and more important commonalities, which have united under defined terms. Although it has four official languages, each canton (which is similar to a province or state) has one it uses for all official matters.

Or the exact opposite of the ‘invade the world, invite the world’ strategy of the USA.

Also those four official languages mean very little, because the Swiss, unlike Canadians practice a very strict territorial unilingualism in contrast to Canada’s sub-continental wide bilingualism.

I think you are referring to the black guy not using a condom…? That could be, and also being more aggressive and brushing aside objections from his partner.

Mere aggressiveness by the man seems to increase the chances of pregnancy, clearly seen in the most aggressive form of intercourse:

Per-incident rape-pregnancy rates exceed per-incident consensual pregnancy rates by a sizable margin, even before adjusting for the use of relevant forms of birth control.

Even before? Get back to me when you have one that says even after!

Even before? Get back to me when you have one that says even after!

I should have included a longer excerpt to make it clear what they were reporting:

“Using data on birth control usage from ‘The Statistical Abstract of the United States,’ we then form an estimate of rape-pregnancy rates adjusted for the substantial number of women in our sample who would have been protected by oral contraception or an IUD.”

Then follows the sentence I quoted from the study:

“Per-incident rape-pregnancy rates exceed per-incident consensual-pregnancy rates by a sizable margin, even before adjusting for the use of relevant forms of birth control.”

I should have been clearer than that: the likelihood of unwanted conception from rape is two times higher than conception from consensual sex, according to the study originally cited.
And, incidentally, the husbands of married women who have been raped are five times as likely to file for divorce within one year of the incident as are men whose wives have not been raped (Kelly et al. 2011.).

Dr. Thomas Sowell makes the exact same points as Steve's observations in his book "Ethnic America" on his chapter "The Italians". Northern Italy was the home of the Italian Renaissance as well as the Roman Empire. Culture, class, style, higher rates of literacy, etc were largely confined to the North. The South in contrast was a backwater, home to the Mafia (as well as Spartacus's slave uprising in 73 BC). When people thought of Italy's best, brightest, well read, educated classes they largely came from the Northern provinces. That's an historical fact.

Why do you think the US's Italian immigrants are largely Sicilian? Because they wanted to get away from their S***hole of a region and on to better and greener pastures. There simply wasn't a reason for Northern Italians to leave their provinces as things were going quite well for them.

There was a lot of mixing but the children were always counted as black. That's what the "one drop rule" means. How do you think blacks got to be 20% white on average?

Go back and re-read what I wrote. I wrote that OBVIOUSLY mixing occured, but not to the extent that SJWs, Libs, etc would have one to believe.

Since blacks have never outnumbered whites in the US, its fairly obvious that any mixing will directly affect their genes across their race on a wider level than it will with whites.

Example: Blacks has you noted have ca.20% white admixture in their genetic makeup. Yet, for about ca. 96% of all whites in the US, they have ca.0% (roughly speaking) of black genes. You simply don’t find very many all white families with children of about 20% black genes. Doesn’t happen.

    Why?

Because: most whites did not own slaves, and during Jim Crow, the two races were mostly segregated. Therefore whites didn’t have opportunities to mingle and jingle with the opposite race. Also, as in the case of Jews, who largely migrated to the US after the Civil War and to cities such as NY, they stuck largely to their own neighborhoods which tended to be largely black free.

In other words, the large cohort of blacks that have ca.20% or more of white genes tended to have ancestors who were slaves and thus would have had the opportunity to mix with whites, even though most whites themselves didn’t own slaves, and were largely segregrated from blacks on a personal level.

e.g. regarding whites, for the most part the Kim Kardashian thing of jingling and mingling is of a fairly recent thing in time.

Blacks have lots of white blood, so it's inaccurate to say the races didn't mix. It's just that very few of those who now identify as white have any, much less significant, intermixture of African ancestry.

That’s basically what I wrote, duh. I know the words are on the page, perhaps people are not reading them carefully.

Prior to Roman expansion, southern Italy was colonized by the Greeks - the most accomplished people *ever* - and, of course, Pythagoras lived in southern Italy, and Archimedes - described by Isaac Newton, no less, as the 'Prince of Mathematicians, resided in Syracuse, Sicily.
Initially, Roman expansion in the Italian peninsula (Rome is in central Italy, not the north), was directed at the south of Italy - towards the 'Roman Campania' - 'Campania', meaning 'fields' is the present day 'Campagna'. The city of Capua, still extant, in Campagna was probably the second Italian city after Rome.
    , @Client 9
Before unification the South was stable and prosperous it was not until after unification a growing economic divide between the northern provinces and the southern half of Italy became evident. In the early decades of the new kingdom, the lack of effective land reform, heavy taxes, and other economic measures imposed on the South, along with the removal of protectionist tariffs on agricultural goods imposed to boost northern industry, made the situation nearly impossible for many tenant farmers, small businesses and land owners. Multitudes chose to emigrate rather than try to eke out a meagre living, especially from 1892 to 1921. Also the South produced many accomplished individuals in arts and sciences. The phrase “the example that proves the rule” is widely misunderstood.

It uses the earlier alternative meaning of “prove” as “to test.”

The phrase just means “this exception tests the rule.”

I could never get my head around that ‘exception proves the rule’, now I know why….

    Hi, Jim,
I think you were on the Nimitz when this happened:

Bad night. Ugly. Not Forestall-ugly, but ugly. However, the official NAVAIRSYSCOM report never faulted the bravery of anyone concerned, the drug testing was part of autopsies. But it ended all notions of the Constitutionality of random, mandatory drug testing for the military. Reagan’s SecDef ordered random testing a couple of months after the crash, give or take. I was off active duty by that point and they weren’t drug testing at the NAVAIR Reserve unit at Andrews, yet, I felt so left out. I couldn’t get shore duty and even with the promise of 1st Class PO for a 4 year re-up for sea duty, I decided enough already. Of course, I took up a 45 year motorcycle habit that isn’t kicked to this day, so I don’t know why I was such a pussy about another 4 years at sea on top of 5 and change, heh..

They were sick for years, couldn’t get a lick of help from the VA. I’ve got the nodules, VA says they’re asbestos-related, I’ll likely die before they ever grant a claim on it. I always figured something would get me but here I sit. They marked me with a condition they won’t compensate me for, appeals pending..The VA is really reprehensible.

If you were looking for a hero’s tale, sorry about that, but others were pretty ballsy, and of course, some got killed for their trouble.

    As you were.

What a load of cr*p. Did. you take a survey of rape victims and ask them if they orgasamed? How did you get their names? How large was your sample?

You are just a pervert who probably fantasizes about being a rapist.

You need to learn the basic facts about human reproduction and female anatomy. Conception depends on one thing and one thing only. That thing is the at most , 7 days of the month in which a woman can possibly get pregnant

Unless she takes the pill or has an IUD, a woman raped is likely to get pregnant during the fertile days of the month because birth control would not be used

The myth that rape victims automatically orgasem is a very common, standard, age old motif of thousands of porn stories. I think it’s even in Fanny Hill and some of the ancient Greek and Roman stories

This site needs a better quality of commenters instead of elderly porn obsessed wankers.

The word 'men' here is controversial.

Basically they were 'manginas' who were weak, stupid and soft-headed enough to be swayed by all that 'civil rights' nonsense.

Whatever you want to call them they were MEN and the leaders of what was then the greatest country on earth.

Who do you think created affirmative action for women?? White male judges and EEOC employs and Human Resources heads. Prior to about 1975 almost all, especially in the private sector HR heads were White men and they just stopped hiring their fellow White men and started hiring nothing but women and minirities.

And who do you think created the original feminist movement? It was the White male funded and administered Ford, Carnegie and Rockefeller Foundations.

Motive? To lower wages and vastly increase the numbers of people applying for each job.

Karl Marx got one thing right when he wrote about the capitalist exploitation of
“ the vast army of the unemployed”

So maybe the folk belief that a black man will get you pregnant like that may just be an attempt to discourage such couplings.

No, it's a response to the fact that the black guy will TRY to get you pregnant, while white guys will generally try not to, and white girls will expect the black guys not to try. In other words, the black guy WILL get you pregnant "like that".

And it makes puzzling the common folk belief that black men don’t stick around after sex.

How so? They don't. Ninety percent of babies fathered by blacks with women of another race are born out of wedlock.

And it makes puzzling the common folk belief that black men don’t stick around after sex.

How so? They don’t. Ninety percent of babies fathered by blacks with women of another race are born out of wedlock.

Right, they don’t. What I was trying to get at, and didn’t’ succeed too well, was … according to the research, white men are actually much more potent than black men, even though folk belief has it that black men are the super studs. So I was thinking that, this being true, and other research showing that men with high potency don’t seem to bother much with mate guarding, it should be white men who abandon women and black men who stick around to guard them and ensure any offspring are theirs. But, as you say, that’s not the case. It’s the virile white men who don’t rape and who, as a general rule, stay with the women they impregnate.
And why don’t they mate-guard their women and don’t care if they strut around in public in miniskirts and tank tops? Probably because they don’t have to. Research reveals very low rates of cuckoldry in the West. For example:
Low historical rates of cuckoldry in a Western European human population traced by Y-chromosome and genealogical data.
And here is Razib Khan’s thorough look at the subject:
The paternity myth: the rarity of cuckoldry.
    Key graf:
“What are the real numbers? [They're] in the 1-5% range, with 3.7% being a high-bound figure for one study. This varies by culture and socioeconomic group, and the segment of the population being surveyed. Studies which rely on a data set consisting of men who have requested paternity tests are strongly sample-biased toward those who have a reason to have suspicions. It’s somewhat like some of the critiques of the Kinsey Reports and deviant sexual behavior; if you survey sexual deviants (however you define that) to get a sense of the proportion of deviancy in the population you’re going to get a higher than representative figure. And yet even in the cases of men who have suspicions only a minority have misattributed paternity.”
Of course, with birth control, a lot of unrecordable infidelity could be going on, and it does seem to be true that younger generations are more casual about sex than older ones.
But, still, white men, as a rule, don’t really have to worry about being cuckolds, and can let their girls flaunt their hotness — they still keep their legs crossed when push comes to shove … so to speak. ScarletNumber’s original post, which caught my attention, was about an exception to this, and, to me, an outrageous one: A man serving in a war zone should not have this happen to him.

As an aside, I know a person working on an advanced degree who is studying security camera footage of rapes — street rapes, as she calls them, not Harvey Weinstein stuff, where a passing woman is assaulted (the rapists are invariably black, the women non-black, almost always white). One interesting point is that the time from the initial attack to the man strolling away — yes, they casually walk off, they don’t run — is about three to four minutes. Hard to imagine that a woman surprised, punched violently several times — eye socket broken quite often, nose, too, often the jaw, as well — could experience sexual pleasure under such conditions and in such a short time. If she does — why? What would be the evolutionary advantage? Data seem to indicate this can be the case. I don’t get it.
Sorry for the long response. TMI, no doubt. (^_^)

Your relative on the ship maybe knows more than I and a lot of the stuff in the actual report was inaccurate as they had asses to cover. For convenience I won't go into, they used to keep "Alert 15" fighters aft of the Super Structure, or Island. Alert 15 fighters of that day, Tomcats, had typical loading of two Sparrows, a Pair of Aim-9 Sidewinders, plus guns. Full bag of fuel and a 2000-lb belly tank. Three of them so-configured were parked aft of the Island, just outside the 'foul line', the right hand border pf the landing area. Well, the EA-6 practically pancaked the Alert 15 fighters with their loads and fuel. I always thought it was a bad idea for all that to be near the LOX station which was also behind the Island, but that's Air Boss shit, you don't open your trap. It was acknowledged in the report that well, uhm, maybe it's not a good idea to stage birds that way. No shit. But no one was held responsible, even though everyone knew it was a bad idea. Top it off, that's where the LOX cart was, coincidentally. Never liked that, either. Ah, shit, there are so many ways to get killed on those things, what's a couple more, right?

The rest of the report squares with the truth. The Skipper turned the ship to get the breeze blowing the right way, they put out the fire. A half hour after, while they were turning over debris looking for people, a Sparrow warhead cooked off, killing six more and re-starting the fire. I wonder that more warheads didn't go off, or motors. Anyway, that was ONE crash, made the thing inoperable for weeks. And so imagine a swarm of cruise missiles they can't defend against. Carriers are oblsolete. The proof is the Norks. We don't get within 500 miles of the Nork Coast, I'd bet anything. All carriers are today is a bombing system for Third-World shitholes that can't shoot back. Against a real missile threat, they're dead. A waste of money, and they have keels laid for at least two more.

Nimitz remains at sea to this day, commissioned 1975. Quite a long life, I'd say we got the Navy's money's worth, if not ours.

I’ve heard it explained that prohibition/permission in a particular case could be understood as establishing that there is a general rule to the contrary — like Susan Rice noting that President Obama sais that the “Russia investigation” was to proceed “by the book” .

I thought the idea was that listing the exceptions tells you the boundaries of the rule. So if the rule on the sign says “no parking after 12 midnight and before 6 AM weekdays” that implies legally that it is ok to park there any other time

Unless your definition of ‘many’ is like 1-4% of the population. Why don’t you put it into precise percentage terms when you use the ambiguous, vapid word ‘many’? 25%? 30%? 35%? 40%? What amount do you mean by the term ‘many’?

Well, he still gets to keep his affirmitive-action job as a famous tv personality in spite of his renunciation of blackness. It's not like he was fired immediately afterwards and replaced with a "real" black.

In the early 80′s there was little AfAc. The networks hired the top 10%.

Seriously, white or black boys of the top 10% (test scores/IQ) were not especially, drawn on to Sport TV - brainiacs, in the early 80′s, went off to SV, or jobs with WS/finance (pay off their student debt) were, much more successful who took the jobs in SV instead of NYC in like, 1980. And, guys (some girls) who loved sport and TV, stayed in NYC, black and white. This is true.

    Ain't that the truth!
That's a good point about just this one crash putting the ship out of action for weeks. You don't have to sink a carrier to make it of no value. The Navy figured that out with their fleet problems in the 1920s.
But when you were serving, at least a carrier had a good air wing with long-range capability.
You might enjoy -- if that's the right word -- reading Retreat from Range. Take a look at the two charts comparing the Nimitz's air wing capabilities in 1986 and 2006. It's appalling. And today it's even worse (the Ford will have only 53 fixed-wing aircraft, and the F-35Cs have a shorter range than the Block Three Super Hornets -- 630nm compared to 750nm).
    Okay, I'm starting to ramble...

Also, Mike is the best host of the Olympics, evah! I was so happy he is the host...he truly cares about sport; and the athletes, trainers, etc. And, he won't make all those dumb, canned statements about Canadians, Norwegians - who, once, again, the Vikings snag the most gold again!!!!!

Also, I mean, he was bald 25 years ago when I met him. He is the anti-ego TV host I have evah known, and I mean evah. He is the opposite of every talking head in sport or news...except, Mike Lee, of course :) Yeah

Ugh…the set is really bad!!!!!!!! he is like, dwarfed by the “Wall in the North.” Zoom cameras in can’t fix the design of the set – sooo, so bad. Poor Mike is putting up with being on the “island of Misfit Toys.” They are trying to fix it, and I can say, MT is not want to complain.

Tread, lightly, dear friend: on this one, you are all wrong. Mike Tirico is a wonderful person and someone who is exactly what the world needs: non-identity -non-grievance collector; non-asshole, if goin' Jersey and all. He is a friend. Just don't. You can't make assumptions of every non-white - it can backfire. Like I said: friend.

Mike Tirico is a wonderful person

Perhaps, but he had his own harassment issues and nearly bombed out ten years back. He had been resurrected, for sure..

Prior to Roman expansion, southern Italy was colonized by the Greeks – the most accomplished people *ever* – and, of course, Pythagoras lived in southern Italy, and Archimedes – described by Isaac Newton, no less, as the ‘Prince of Mathematicians, resided in Syracuse, Sicily.
Initially, Roman expansion in the Italian peninsula (Rome is in central Italy, not the north), was directed at the south of Italy – towards the ‘Roman Campania’ – ‘Campania’, meaning ‘fields’ is the present day ‘Campagna’. The city of Capua, still extant, in Campagna was probably the second Italian city after Rome.

Despite all northern Italian attempts to disavow the south, I seriously doubt if there are major genetic differences between north and south Italy.

And, anyhow weren't the ancient Greeks the most accomplished people ever?

Until they got taken over by the Romans, sure. But even before then they were political wrecks, especially the Sicilian cities– object lessons in how not to run a place.

And, anyhow weren’t the ancient Greeks the most accomplished people ever?

Possible competitors: 9th-century Arabs, High Medieval Paris, Victorian Britain/Germany, late 19th to mid-20th century Jews

Thanks, Jim. That was very interesting, and just the kind of information I was looking for. It’s so hard to find out what really happened.

“Ah, shit, there are so many ways to get killed on those things, what’s a couple more, right?”

    Ain’t that the truth!
That’s a good point about just this one crash putting the ship out of action for weeks. You don’t have to sink a carrier to make it of no value. The Navy figured that out with their fleet problems in the 1920s.
But when you were serving, at least a carrier had a good air wing with long-range capability.
You might enjoy — if that’s the right word — reading Retreat from Range. Take a look at the two charts comparing the Nimitz’s air wing capabilities in 1986 and 2006. It’s appalling. And today it’s even worse (the Ford will have only 53 fixed-wing aircraft, and the F-35Cs have a shorter range than the Block Three Super Hornets — 630nm compared to 750nm).
    Okay, I’m starting to ramble…
Thanks again for your reply, Jim, and very sorry for the delay in responding.

I expect no replies, heh..The 'reach' was never all that great to my eye, a few hundred miles at best because what goes out must come back and that takes fuel too. Impossible unless you had over-target refueling independent of the ship and THAT assumes complete control of the air. Works for Third-World shitholes with no anti-air, but impossible in a competent Soviet or Chinese SAM environment. If you have to stand off 500 miles to stay out of range of cruise missile on top of that, you might as well go back to Norfolk because you just can't operate with holes in your hull, or even one. The notion of the carrier existing to protect the carrier instead of dropping bombs on your 'enemy' makes them obsolete, except it's the only heavy industry we have anymore. Big money this...

The nice places to live in Northern Italy seem like the ones invaded by the Gauls in about 390 BC, while the more mafioso regions seem like the old Greek colonies: lots of talent but dumb Sicilian Expedition-type self-destructive decision-making.

Switzerland agree to be the central of banking. yeah….shit, holy shi haha
