You’re not supposed to give away spoilers about Christopher Nolan’s “Interstellar,” such as the name of the movie star who plays “Dr. Mann,” a celebrated climate scientist and humanitarian who reports back to Earth that the alien planet he has discovered is quite warm. Nor am I supposed to tell you what happens next involving Dr. Mann.

But let’s just say, as a couple of my commenters have pointed out at Taki’s, that Mark Steyn will likely get a kick out of the Nolan Brothers’ portrayal of Dr. Mann.

Here are comments explaining what the Nolans were up to by Hootyman and Wigless.

Funny that you should mention Mann, as he was briefly mentioned by a professor in a class that I attended at Mann’s very own Penn State today. The interesting part about the digression involving Mann came not from the mention of Mann himself, (basically, tenure is necessary in order to protect Mann from the evil fossil fuel industry!) but from the recounting of a similar story from this professor’s past. According to this professor, one of his former colleagues at a Nevada university was a critic of the casino industry. Because of that, Steve Wynn actually demanded the university president to fire the critical professor (but he wasn’t because of tenure.) What a nice guy Wynn must be!

On a related note, Adam Silver wants sports gambling to be legalized. And on a related note to that…just kidding, I’ll end my rambling stream of consciousness here.

Wynn attended University of Pennsylvania, not Penn State.

    Big, big difference.

It's just possible that your professor is full of crap.
  2. Mann will sue Nolan et. al. His fragile ego demands it.

No chance. The director would have the entire entertainment industry funding his defense. Mann went after Steyn because he's unconnected. And California has the toughest anti-Slapp.

Another tax on the left side of the bell curve.

From each according to his inability, to each according to his greed.

As someone who was a grad student TA at UPenn and interviewed for a position at Penn State, I'd like to suggest that the difference may be neither as big nor in the direction that your readers may infer.

OK now, we talk about IQ a lot here, and I'm secure enough to admit I'm stupid if I'm just missing it, but - that Wynn didn't attend Penn State affects the story how?

  8. Will Steve ever give his opinion on global warming? It seems like a topic with all the sort of players and social intracies(symbolic stances on both sides) which is right up Steve’s alley.

It affects the story not at all, but affects the hurt feelings of PSU grads without a sense of proportion greatly.
  11. This coming Monday is going to be a big day for Black America. It’s the day their heads will explode when it is announced that Officer Darren Wilson will not be indicted. Less than 72 hours away, the clock is ticking. Tick tock tick tock tick tock. I am going to be glued to the my television screen that day.
