From the Portland [Oregon] Mercury:

How Portland Is Driving Away New Residents of Color

The City Wasn’t Giving Me What I Needed—Which Is Why I Left
by Zahir Janmohamed

Zahir Janmohamed is the co-host of Racist Sandwich , a podcast about food, race, gender, and class. In August, Saveur magazine nominated Racist Sandwich as one of America’s best food podcasts.

As I hope you expect, iSteve has already been covering the Racist Sandwich beat.

He is now based in Columbus, Ohio.

It’s cool when, instead of saying they live in Columbus, journalists say they are “based in Columbus.” It would be cooler, however, if they said they were based out of Columbus, like hitmen in an Elmore Leonard novel: e.g., Icepick Willy is based out of Kansas City.

Also, Icepick is a cooler first name than Zahir: “Icepick Janmohamed is based out of Columbus.”

Okay, okay, I’ll admit that Columbus is a hopelessly lame place to be based out of.

But I’m just trying to help.

… So then what does it mean when I, and other people of color (POC), walk away from Portland because we can no longer stomach its racism? …

What struck me was the very frank and seldom heard opinions by POC born and raised in Portland who are tired—understandably so—by new transplants like myself criticizing their city.

Do you get the impression lately that POC are about to collapse in a heap of exhaustion from all the Emotional Labor they do?

… But almost immediately after I arrived, I found myself eager to get out.

I quickly grew accustomed to being asked by white people about my ethnic heritage—whether at the grocery store, sports bar, or on TriMet—and learned to say that I’m Indian American in the first few minutes of practically every conversation, just to set them at ease. It never really worked. They specifically wanted to know about the “Mohamed” in my last name.

When I lived in other more diverse US cities, I didn’t feel such a pressing need to talk about race. But in Portland, I often felt forced to do so because of the daily slights I, and so many other POC, experienced. It was taxing and unfair…

The thing is, I tried liking Portland. I even co-founded a podcast, Racist Sandwich—covering food, race, gender, and class—hoping it would make me feel at ease in Oregon. …

But Portland was simply too much for me. …

“The thing that trips me out about Portland is not that it’s so white. That’s just a numbers game that will change as the demographics shift,” said Robin Ye, a Chinese American recent graduate of the University of Chicago who is now once again in his native Portland. “The issue is that for many white people, they walk into an office meeting or classroom, see no people of color around, and feel like there’s nothing wrong about that.”

What makes matters worse, many told me, is the climate in Oregon post-election. According to the Southern Poverty Legal Center, Oregon experienced the highest number of hate incidents per capita in the 10 days immediately following Donald Trump’s win. …

Taz Loomans, an Indian American, also moved to the Bay Area from Portland. … “Living in Portland made me hate white people! … In Portland the most painful experience was that my white friends and colleagues very much resisted and refuted the idea that it was a difficult place for people of color.”

… “I don’t ride my bike at night,” she said. “No way. I’m Black. Even Black people are shocked to see Black people ride their bikes here.”

… “Portland is racist and it’s hurting my career and spirit,” Tam said originally. …

Two words that kept coming up repeatedly in my interviews were “erasure” and “privilege.”

… I gained amazing friends, a keener understanding of LGBTQ issues, and the importance of asking a person for their pronouns of choice. But Portland also forced me to revisit parts of my childhood that I would rather put behind me, like episodes in my life when I was the only non-white person in the room, something I don’t have to deal with as often in Columbus.

… I couldn’t, though, get past the fact that the tasting menu was called a “magic carpet ride.” Growing up in California, sometimes kids would come over and, after seeing my mother’s prayer Muslim mat in our house, tease me because they thought I carried a “magic carpet” like the characters in the Disney film Aladdin.

When I pushed back and said I was more than that, they responded I was being too sensitive, I had an attitude problem, and that maybe they might hear me if only my tone were “right.”

It hurt. It still does.

Reading all these I Cried Among the Farmland essays of Immigriping, I have to agree with one commenter: They’re not sending their best.

    Excellent.

"So what does that mean? It gets easily offended and complains about everything"

    It's immigriping + millennial moaning.

Michigan's beautiful Mackinac Island hotel rooms rotting because of H-2B visa restrictions!

    Worker shortages!

It's a "nightmare" says the guy whose family owns 8 restaurants and 28 hotels in Mackinac City alone!

The Jamaicans didn't come this year!

If only there were some solution to the horrible, evil, terrible hotel and restaurant worker shortages in tourist areas!

    Alas!

Steve, have you ever been to Mackinac Island? It is a great one-day visit.

I'm going with Crying Among the Farmland. Immigriping sounds like it could be an adult reasonably bitching about red tape, lost luggage, or zoning laws. Crying Among the Farmland catches the nose-dripping, whiny little kid quality of these narratives. Only they ARE adults, which makes it worse.

We are all people of color (POC). This was pointed out years ago by Bertrand Russell when he and an Indian scholar were denied access to some building because they were white. He said "We are colored. We are pink".

Personally I become more a Person of Color even more so whenever the day is particularly sunny and I haven't applied enough sun block.

I have lived in Asia for much of the time since 1980. Most of that time has been naturally spent without sight of caucasians.

I lived in Japan in the 80s. An interesting thing about white American expats was that some of them would go out of their way to avoid other Americans/white people. A lot of those kids came to Japan with the express purpose of learning about that culture and didn't want to be distracted. They may have grumbled in private, but were respectful enough not to impose American values on the Japanese. That sort of curiosity/humility seems to be lacking in both the Indian subcontinent and most the Middle East. Are there any Muslim equivalents of Lafcadio Hearn or any of the great British orientalists?
    , @Daniel Chieh
I remember my white wife telling me how she felt uncomfortable feeling when she first moved in with me and went to Chinatowns, etc, and felt that she was outnumbered. But she got over it within weeks with no great emotional damage.

Professional victims just make a huge deal out of everything.

For my part, I grew up surrounded by whites and never really noticed anything. I didn't think that I should have? But I do think, and it worries me, that had I grown up now when whining was so fashionable, that I too could be bought into it.

Its a matter of incentives. Its pretty disgusting right now how whining about your victimhood is so very hip and cool, and a great way to virtue signal and bond with other "victims." This certainly isn't the way to bring the best out of people.

On the upside, it might actually be very good for white men in a strange, sadistic way. There's some research that finds that creativity thrives best under oppression and ironically, all this effort to suppress white men might very well be bringing the best out of them.

    , @guest
    "what else could I expect?"

Expectations and emotions are different things. People feel lonely and out of place living in alien cultures no matter how expertly they manage their emotions by rationalizing about expectations. There's nothing wrong with that.

There is, however, something wrong with bitching about it in newspaper articles, and pretending as if people Over There owe you something for your troubles. Because they could justifiably tell you, if you feel that way, "Yankee, go home."

    they’re not sending their best.

I don’t know, he seems like someone who might have the points to prove otherwise.

Must there have been some white nursemaids along the way who indulged these POC’s every ridiculous complaint? He mentions those who said he had an attitude problem. Why would he think he doesn’t? Because of an emergent phenomenon of growing numbers of POC — they all tend to validate each other (but only when griping about whites, of course)?

But reading the entire article, you notice that what the stories all had in common wasn’t that they were gripes, but howls of real psychological pain caused by the mere existence of white people.

They have to go back. For their own health’s sake.

Perhaps we can start a campaign to get the immigriping types back to their beloved less white homelands. A one way ticket back to the lands with no white people on us! Get thee to JFK and LAX today!

But suspect the creature comforts of the white people US areas like Portland -quick coffee, indoor plumbing, pizza delivery, AC, refrigeration, the internet, 500+ station cable systems, HOUSES, et al-are probably things they secretly like a great deal more than Racist Sandwich Guy would ever admit. Truism-everyone in the world generally and in the US especially want to move to where the white people are.

Only exceptions really are gentrified areas when SWPL types discover a potentially decent place to live that formerly was occupied by mostly black and Latinos. And then said blacks and Latinos get mad because bodegas get replaced by retro hat makers and artisanal mayonnaise concessions. Even understand to a point-used to be able to get a cold 12 pack of Bud or Coors Light relatively reasonably and instead it's some bitter overpriced craft brew, but I digress.

Really, if it is that bad, leave. Otherwise, shut the ___ up. It is not that bad.

The unspoken assumption of the Diversity Cult is that white people are fundamentally illegitimate. Nothing we create--a livable neighborhood, a decent school, a business, a city, a country, Europe-- is ever ours because that's not "inclusive." Our enemies have managed to create an ideology that literally regards anything less than complete surrender of our civilization as immoral. The white establishment has completely internalized this self-immolating thought disorder.

The comments from these ingrates show just how far gone we are. A society with even a modicum of self-respect would not allow aliens to develop such a contemptuous sense of entitlement to a country that they had no part in creating. Our generosity to the non-white world has been unprecedented in world history, and this is the thanks we get in return. The answer to this problem is obvious but our Traitor Class has nothing more than cringing subservience.

On incidental public encounters, passing in the street, etc, the universal etiquette for long-term visible foreigners in Japan is to studiously ignore each other and not emit any sign of kinship stronger than what one has to anyone else in the group, who all are japanese otherwise.

It is kind of a strange thing at first, but after a while you kind of get it while you are getting somewhat assimilated, or reconciled to peaceful harmony really, that it is really uncool to be sticking out in Japan and chatting it up with another foreigner on an otherwise quiet train is way too much attention.

When you are a minority way down at the <.01 percent level, you just get hammered into the local culture. I could tell this was happening, just the way one carries oneself, for instance, by when clerks in stores would casually lead in Japanese rather than throwing their hands up in panic and saying sorry no English. Just by demeanor before I'd speak a word.

In the end, it is all just about getting along and not annoying the people around you. I did some really cool things there, like only foreigner on Japanese PTA or with kid in school.

An interesting thing about white American expats was that some of them would go out of their way to avoid other Americans/white people.

For example a Florida politician called McGillicuddy changed his last name to Mack, so that he would sound more like a truck or a meat sandwich, and so that if he was elected President he could quickly sign his name to lots of executive orders.

Drumpf to Trump. Blythe III to Clinton, Rodham to Clinton, and so on.

Multiple Olympic gold medallist distance runner Mo Farah has a real first name of Mohamed, but it does not sound very British, and he is British on the track, even if he lives and trains in Portland, Oregon where the people are so racist that they don’t even know who he is. Why on earth would he live and train in beastly Portland, Oregon when he has the option to live in Somalia or in England?

I believe it does. They're writing for the market. If the market was paying for "How Grateful I Am to America" stories, they'd probably be capable of churning some of those.

It's like listening to black columnists complain constantly about being black in America. They could leave any time they want to, as people do when they're desperately unhappy with the country in which they live, but they don't. The fact is, they like it here, and like the fact that they get rewarded for thinking of things to complain about.

  37. [W]hat does it mean when I, and other people of color (POC) [sic] white people, walk away from Portland San José because we can no longer stomach its racism?

When I lived in other more less diverse US [sic] cities, I didn’t feel such a pressing need to talk about race. But in Portland San José, I often felt forced to do so because of the daily slights I, and so many other POC [sic] white people, experienced. It was is taxing and unfair…

The issue is that for many white mud people, they walk into an office meeting or classroom, see no people of color white people around, and feel like there’s nothing wrong about that.

Living in Portland San José made me hate white mud people! In Portland San José the most painful experience was that my white friends and Hindoo, Oriental, mestizoid, and sodomite colleagues very much resisted and refuted the idea that it was a difficult place for people of color actual Americans who aren’t sexual perverts.

Portland San José is racist and it’s hurting my career and [my] spirit.

Portland San José also forced me to revisit parts of my childhood time in and around Miami that I would rather put behind me, like episodes in my life when I was the only non-white person in the room city, something I don’t have to deal with as often in Columbus cannot seem to escape from because invaders are overwhelming my entire nation with its government’s support, leaving me no refuge.

My brother has lived in Japan most of his life. He observed that a lot of people come to Japan, fall in love with it, think it’s the most perfect place on earth, and want to stay there. Then after a few months, reality begins to undermine their initial infatuation. Japan is not perfect in every way. There are aspects of Japanese society that many foreigners find they don’t like. At that point, they either accept Japan as it is or they go back where they came from.

In America, people who come here expect us to change to meet their requirements. And as long as we don’t, they’re going to bitch and moan and the New York Times is going to pay them for it.

Must there have been some white nursemaids along the way who indulged these POC's every ridiculous complaint? He mentions those who said he had an attitude problem. Why would he think he doesn't? Because of an emergent phenomenon of growing numbers of POC -- they all tend to validate each other (but only when griping about whites, of course)?

But reading the entire article, you notice that what the stories all had in common wasn't that they were gripes, but howls of real psychological pain caused by the mere existence of white people.

They have to go back. For their own health's sake.

43. The complaining immigrants will be much happier when they are removed from the United States. The United States would be a much better place if 20 or 30 million recent immigrants were to be removed. I am talking about illegal invaders and legal entrants. Citizenship should be revoked for many millions of foreigners who have entered the United States and taken advantage of the corrupt immigration laws to become citizens in recent decades.

The ruling class of the American Empire has behaved in a manner so corrupt that most of their governmental actions will have to be considered illegitimate. That includes the mass immigration policies that have flooded the United States with foreigners. There is no reason for Americans born after the year 1965 to continue to allow the policies and edicts of the corrupt ruling class of the American Empire to destroy the nation.

Have you noticed that the Murdoch mob at the Wall Street Journal and the Sulzberger gang at the New York Times both attacked President Trump for his efforts to defend Sheriff Joe Arpaio from a politically motivated witchhunt? * When white people hate “People of Color” (and that’s such a stupid term, ‘white’ is a color too), it’s the fault of white people: we’re not open minded, we’re stereotyping, we don’t appreciate diversity, etc.

Who is this baby who claims to get the vapors if the rest of the room is all white?

Is this just political positioning or is he genuinely discombobulated? If the latter he needs professional help.

I have lived in Asia for much of the time since 1980. Most of that time has been naturally spent without sight of caucasians. I have adjusted accordingly; learnt to finesse cultural differences when the occasion demanded. It has never bothered me because what else could I expect?

This ludicrous but possibly dangerous clown reminds me of the black British lady who went to a non-city university in Scotland and later loudly claimed she felt lonely because there were so many white people. What did she expect?

I remember my white wife telling me how she felt uncomfortable feeling when she first moved in with me and went to Chinatowns, etc, and felt that she was outnumbered. But she got over it within weeks with no great emotional damage.

Professional victims just make a huge deal out of everything.

For my part, I grew up surrounded by whites and never really noticed anything. I didn’t think that I should have? But I do think, and it worries me, that had I grown up now when whining was so fashionable, that I too could be bought into it.

Its a matter of incentives. Its pretty disgusting right now how whining about your victimhood is so very hip and cool, and a great way to virtue signal and bond with other “victims.” This certainly isn’t the way to bring the best out of people.

On the upside, it might actually be very good for white men in a strange, sadistic way. There’s some research that finds that creativity thrives best under oppression and ironically, all this effort to suppress white men might very well be bringing the best out of them.

Maybe; maybe not. I was born on the cuff of the X and Millennial generations: growing up in the Clinton years, whining was becoming very much in fashion. However, my parents only ever complained about people complaining. They were more indulgent with our whining than their parents had been (more so than they should have been) but to their credit they made a real effort to rein us in and most importantly, they always paid very close attention to whom we hung out with - and also to who those kids' parents were and what their core values were. I must say they immunized us against some real kooks. I think I have some work to do, but I do believe I'm self-aware enough to know almost systematically when I've been unreasonable. I think a large number of my peers are not.
    , @Seth Largo
Blacks have a right to gripe about being the only blacks around. They never asked to be here. But it's chutzpah to be a voluntary immigrant and gripe about the demographics of the nation to which you immigrated. I mean, I get that it's a little odd and uncomfortable at times*, but on a World Problems scale of 1 - 10, the issue ranks about a 0.05. Yet it's written about and discussed as though it were a 5 or 6, which is a factor both of our zeitgeist and the apparently frail egos of many first and second generation immigrants.

Another in the long list of hate pieces that could be titled ‘Reason #2006 of Why I Hate the People That I Parasitize Off Of”. Whites are the main purchasers of what these gripers are selling and are the ones putting dollars into their bank accounts yet there’s no gratitude. Continentals and Muslims are the worst offenders amongst this bunch and of course the NYT is always eager to hand the megaphone over to anyone who can put together an anti-white message.
The US has taken in more people in a relatively short period of time than any other country in the history of the world and yet these ungrateful gripers literally spit on us. This country already has 330M people. Stop immigration totally except for east Europeans; the western and northern Europeans aren’t coming anyway.

What struck me was the very frank and seldom heard opinions by POC born and raised in Portland who are tired—understandably so—by new transplants like myself criticizing their city.

I don’t understand this quote. Is he saying that people of color who were born and raised in Portland are tired of newbies like Mr. Janmohamed complaining about Portland?

I thought his beef was against whites. But I read his quote as POC, not whites, are tired of the new transplants complaining about Portland.

Same here. I took that to mean black and brown Portlanders were telling him to STFU.
    , @TheUmpteenthGermanOnHere
Yes, your reading is correct. Doesn't that heighten the comedic effect of the whole piece immeasurably? Not only does the guy have no self-awareness, but even his fellow POCs could not make him question the appropriateness of his diva performance. I am reminded of a certain fairytale by Hans-Christian Andersen.
Now would someone please help me out regarding what that black lady was trying to convey? I live in Northern Germany. There are Africans here, but they do ride bikes. I also doubt that Portland nights are darker than those in Germany. 'Tis a puzzlement to me.
    , @Anonymous
I didn't resolve that one in my mind either. He seemed to be claiming that Portland-born/raised POC-emons, presumably out of false consciousness, told him to shut up and stop being so immi-grating (same town where blacks are unnerved by "blacks" riding bikes, so Portland nativism works in mysterious ways). Anyway I don't predict Columbus is the last whistle stop on his Crabby Immigrant World Tour.
    , @Anonymous
    The explanation is further down:

One Black woman I interviewed—who preferred to remain anonymous—regards new Portlanders of color like me to be just as annoying as the white gentrifiers who plant Black Lives Matter signs on their lawn while pushing out longtime Black residents.

“People use this term 'people of color’ as if we are one mass group, united, and experiencing the same thing,” she said. “But I’ve seen some of these new POC perpetuate the same anti-Black sentiments that white people have. Besides, I think white people would sooner listen to an Asian person like you talk about race than a Black person. And these new Portlanders of color who aren’t Black realize it. They exploit that.”

    , @Dave Shanken
In the 17th and 18th centuries, the European colonists in America, while often united against the indigenous population, also fought each other over the territory and wealth in the western hemisphere.

Likewise today, the minorities, imported and domestic, are fighting each other over American territory and wealth, which while vast is not unlimited.
    , @Olorin
The point is not to make sense.

The point is to use one's immigration status as a PC orange crate to haul into the public square, whereupon to b!tch, and b!tch loudly and without cease.

It's a highly feminized form of communication. Trying to figure it out--so that, then, what? you can fix it?--is pointless.

Except where it keeps guys tied up in trying to figure it out and fix it.

Scan this, then substitute "immigrants" for "women."

I always feel I’m reading something written by someone who is racist or at least racially twisted when I see the racial descriptor “white” in lower-case letters in the same sentence where “Black” is capitalized. For the record, “white” and “black” should always be lower case unless the first world of a sentence; “Caucasian” and “Negro” are upper case. It’s not that hard!

Maybe; maybe not. I was born on the cuff of the X and Millennial generations: growing up in the Clinton years, whining was becoming very much in fashion. However, my parents only ever complained about people complaining. They were more indulgent with our whining than their parents had been (more so than they should have been) but to their credit they made a real effort to rein us in and most importantly, they always paid very close attention to whom we hung out with – and also to who those kids’ parents were and what their core values were. I must say they immunized us against some real kooks. I think I have some work to do, but I do believe I’m self-aware enough to know almost systematically when I’ve been unreasonable. I think a large number of my peers are not.

People who don't live among and work among lower class blacks have no idea.

And the Somalis are worse. Even the American blacks dislike them. A couple years ago they rioted not far from us at a site where section 8 vouchers were being distributed.

No thanks, I'll stay here in 95% White Boston. Yeah, the trains and subways, the Common, the Hall, Fenway and whatnot smell of legal marijuana, but it's wussy White kids, not swarthy diversity. I detest diversity. Boston was a nice retreat from the Hellhole of Northern Virginia and the Black and very violent and racist-against-Whites Washington DC. The entire region is now a sewer of hateful diversity, impossible to do business in the commercial electrical and IT trades anymore.

Problem is, I'm fast running out of places to move to if this doesn't stay the way I need it to. Boston is staunchly White culture though. Even the ditch diggers and landscapers are Irish here. And the cops have no truck with violent, swarthy diversity. They lock em right up. When it comes to White feminist privilege, there is nothing like the halls of academia of Harvard, MIT and greater Boston. People of color NOT welcome. Dunno how they get away with it, but it's better than Detroit, I tell ya!

My favourite was a Korean or Vietnamese adoptee in Dublin who got a whole editorial printed in The Irish Times because Ireland is irredeemably racist and should be flooded with more non-Irish (Preferably Asians) because two underclass girls mockingly said ‘ching chong’ to her in passing. That was literally it, that was all she had! Which makes sense because overt hostility towards adopted Korean girls isn’t really something that would occur to anyone in Dublin or elsewhere in Ireland. Yet deep down she hated that she couldn’t fully identify with her adopted country she had no say in coming to, but we aren’t allowed to notice that. Clearly it must be a pathological flaw in the natives that is making her feel bad and they should be ethnically displaced until she doesn’t feel so conspicuous on the street anymore.

Of course, every person who isn’t from the underclass has had ‘comments’ thrown at them when they walk through those areas, but she thought that comments based on her ethnicity were special. Just like the guy who thinks being teased at school for being ethnically weird is special as opposed to being teased for other reasons. Neither will ever realise how stupid and petty their reasons for declaring war on whites is to outsiders.

It’s like they think they can bitch away the history of their countries.

Blacks have a right to gripe about being the only blacks around. They never asked to be here. But it’s chutzpah to be a voluntary immigrant and gripe about the demographics of the nation to which you immigrated. I mean, I get that it’s a little odd and uncomfortable at times*, but on a World Problems scale of 1 – 10, the issue ranks about a 0.05. Yet it’s written about and discussed as though it were a 5 or 6, which is a factor both of our zeitgeist and the apparently frail egos of many first and second generation immigrants.

Diversity is a codeword for fewer white people.

All white people – safe, better service, better work ethic and people who can be understood.

We need to gather a million Americans in one place and all shout at once, "YOU NEED TO GO HOME!" Perhaps the message will penetrate.

My brother has lived in Japan most of his life. He observed that a lot of people come to Japan, fall in love with it, think it's the most perfect place on earth, and want to stay there. Then after a few months, reality begins to undermine their initial infatuation. Japan is not perfect in every way. There are aspects of Japanese society that many foreigners find they don't like. At that point, they either accept Japan as it is or they go back where they came from.

In America, people who come here expect us to change to meet their requirements. And as long as we don't, they're going to bitch and moan and the New York Times is going to pay them for it.

The first group to migrate to the US and demand that the US had to change to make them happy was the (((usual suspects))).

Is Columbus now a bastion of the kind of dark diversity Zahir Janmohamed prefers?

If you don't venture out too far east of High Street and stay away from the courthouse, you'd get the impression that the city is maybe 85% white, not 60%.

No thanks, I’ll stay here in 95% White Boston. Yeah, the trains and subways, the Common, the Hall, Fenway and whatnot smell of legal marijuana, but it’s wussy White kids, not swarthy diversity. We own a lot of rentals in a pretty black section of Columbus and not far from Little Somalia. Just recently my wife had an 8-year-old black kid shout at her "Get out of our neighborhood, whitey!" This on a street that was once largely white when we lived on it about 25 years ago.

People who don't live among and work among lower class blacks have no idea.

This may or may not be on topic, but I was recently watching the show Boardwalk Empire (or, as my dad always referred to it, Broadway Empire), which takes place on the 20s. There are scattered references to certain characters' experiences in the Philippines war. (Or the "benevolent assimilation.") One guy called them "Filthy-pinos."

That brings up a few questions:

1). Were Filipinos allowed to come over back then, since we owned them?

2). If not, when did they start coming over? With the rest of the world?

3). Howcome we don't call them filthy-pinos anymore? Among those allowed to distinguish between different Asian peoples (basically, other Asians), and even coin slurs against them, what are Filipinos commonly called?

Blacks have a right to gripe about being the only blacks around. They never asked to be here. But it's chutzpah to be a voluntary immigrant and gripe about the demographics of the nation to which you immigrated. I mean, I get that it's a little odd and uncomfortable at times*, but on a World Problems scale of 1 - 10, the issue ranks about a 0.05. Yet it's written about and discussed as though it were a 5 or 6, which is a factor both of our zeitgeist and the apparently frail egos of many first and second generation immigrants.

Six tickets – 1 for him, 1 for his arranged marriage wife from India, 1 for each of their 2 kids, 2 for the grandparents who are no doubt also in the country suffering with them. All the social security they’ve collected can’t even begin to make up for the horror they must’ve suffered in the hands of racist Americans. Please help end their suffering and send this poor family back to India. Praise Allah.

I increasingly live among black people (and near farmland, but I don't cry among either), who I imagine are bused in from the cities and told to run free. Like how people get rid of "problem dogs" in the movies. Anyway, I don't see them riding bikes. But I'm also not aware of biking as a white thing. Unlike swimming.

White people ride for reasons of conscience, leisure, sport, and utility. My guess would be blacks are less likely to ride for the first three, but I don't know. Certainly they would if it came in handy. For instance, when your license is suspended.

I'm beginning to believe that black people like to stereotype themselves as not doing things, even things not strongly associated with whites or other non-blacks, simply to stand out. Makes sense for things like swimming or hunting, which may involve going out into Klan Kountry or Get Out-ville. But you can bike in the innercity.

The vile scum at the WSJ and the NY Times are the voice of the ruling class of the American Empire.

President Trump is now giving voice to White Core Americans. God bless President Trump for coming to the defense of Sheriff Joe Arpaio. President Trump is a decent baby boomer and Sheriff Joe Arpaio is 85 years old. I hope everyone who has attacked Sheriff Arpaio burns and rots in hell.

Sheriff Arpaio is a true patriot. John McCain the POS had the gall to call Trump “lawless” for pardoning him, while saying nothing about all the sanctuary city mayors and governors who lawlessly protect criminal aliens from deportation. Ann Coulter was right to call McCain, Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell the 3 gigolos of the GOP, all 3 are in office thanks to their wives’ wealth and connections, and all 3 are leading the pack of RINOs who are selling out the country along with the Dems. All 3 need to be primary out in the next election, along with Lindsay Graham.

As for those 3 gigolo US Senators, lazy people can't be bothered to get out of their routines once every 6 years to make this primary vote. The shame of it is that if just the real conservatives came out to give support to, and vote for, a primary challenger, they'd have a lot of pull because the normal establishment gigolos won't get a lot of people coming out either.

I didn’t resolve that one in my mind either. He seemed to be claiming that Portland-born/raised POC-emons, presumably out of false consciousness, told him to shut up and stop being so immi-grating (same town where blacks are unnerved by “blacks” riding bikes, so Portland nativism works in mysterious ways). Anyway I don’t predict Columbus is the last whistle stop on his Crabby Immigrant World Tour.

How often has Kevin Love been the only white man in a room full of African-Americans? Or Gordon Hayward?

Probably not very often. Love grew up in Portland, went to UCLA for one year and has consistently had a couple of white teammates, in addition to some white coaches in the NBA. Hayward went to Butler and played for the Utah Jazz and has also consistently had white teammates.

Is that why you or your forebears (it says xhe is a Portland “native,” but I don’t take that word at face value) came to this country? To get away from the Chinese people who thought it was okay for China to be full of Chinamen?

Obviously, the problem is they’re jealous. Peoples of colors feel uncomfortable around white people. They’d rather be around their own kind, or at least those who share in non-whiteness. Which is only natural, because diversity sucks. For some reason, it’s Not Okay for whites to not only not feel the same way, but to not feel the opposite way.

Of course, there being only white faces in rooms is “just a numbers game,” and whites must be okay with that changing soon. In the meantime, we can’t enjoy that the numbers haven’t shifted yet. (We can’t even enjoy all the different kinds of white people, because that’s illegitimate diversity.) It’s Not Okay fir us not to notice that it’s Not Okay that the numbers haven’t shifted yet. They must walk into every whiteful room and declare immediately, “Hey, guys, we’re all white and that is Not Okay!”

    “what else could I expect?”

Expectations and emotions are different things. People feel lonely and out of place living in alien cultures no matter how expertly they manage their emotions by rationalizing about expectations. There’s nothing wrong with that.

There is, however, something wrong with bitching about it in newspaper articles, and pretending as if people Over There owe you something for your troubles. Because they could justifiably tell you, if you feel that way, “Yankee, go home.”

On the other hand, she was the star of the team and had no difficulty at all holding down a first team place, whereas in Kentucky, where she spent the previous two years, she had to compete for a place with a girl who was giving the male coach blow jobs.

“the highest number of hate incidents per capita in the 10 days immediately following Donald Trump’s win”

Let’s say you’re unaware hate hoaxes are a Thing. Doesn’t this look suspect, nonetheless? Oregon is a blue state, so not many Trump voters compared to other states. Maybe they’re disgruntled because they live among liberals. But why would they be disgruntled, given the fact that their side won? Or at least the side more on their side. Because the thesis may be not so much that Trump voters are causing “hate incidents,” but that the Trump phenomenon unleashed Hate Spirits and normalized “hate” in a manner that made haters feel more comfortable in hating.

Still, haters aren’t black. They’re not the type to engage in “victory riots.” Effing stuff up after you win isn’t a white thang.

They’re projecting, partly. Trump winning made them want to lash out, so they assume the other side lashed out, just for a different reason. Also, Trump winning is bad, and all bad things are alike, I guess. If things go bad electorally they go bad hate-wise, too. It was just all badness shortly after doomsday (i.e. election day).

And if they couldn’t get used to it and publicly vocalized disgust at having to be around so many Jews every day? Well the Shin Bet (their FBI) might just pay that person a friendly visit. And it should go without saying that the employment prospects of that person would be absolutely nil. Of course the Israelis want to avoid making non-Jewish immigrants suffer by having to be around so many Jews all the time. They certainly would not want Mr. Zahir Janmohamed to suffer. So purely out of sympathy for him they would never allow him into the country in the first place.

And the Somalis are worse. Even the American blacks dislike them. A couple years ago they rioted not far from us at a site where section 8 vouchers were being distributed.

"Gimme some free stuff. I deserve it."

During a recent trip to Minneapolis, one of my Uber drivers was a Somali from Columbus. He told me there are a lot of them there but Minneapolis has more.

I live in suburban D.C., so seeing a hijab isn’t a new thing but I was stunned by how many Somalis run around in hijabs, even the young girls in Minneapolis. Minnesota whites must be the most patient or gullible whites on the planet to continue voting for Dems as their state became Somalia North.

    , @guest
I'm not saying we aren't gullible, but though Somalis are sprinkled absolutely everywhere, it's not easy to get a feel for the sheer mass of them. When I go to Minneapolis, for instance, I go to white places. You know, the museum, sporting events, gentrified shopping, eating, and drinking places. I zoom past the black areas and don't necessarily even see the Muslim hangouts. They are to be found wandering, but those are vestiges. Groups of two, three, four, they can come off like anomalies, even if you see them everyday. The motherloads are rarer to find.

When I lived in St. Cloud I saw them everyday at college and the hospital, where I worked. But that was dribs and drabs. I lived there for years before I discovered their Little Mogadishu, which was tucked in a corner of town by the river.

My Filipino neighbour is a nurse at the local NHS Hospital, she says the only English that Somalis know is "You give me"

This may or may not be on topic, but I was recently watching the show Boardwalk Empire (or, as my dad always referred to it, Broadway Empire), which takes place on the 20s. There are scattered references to certain characters’ experiences in the Philippines war. (Or the “benevolent assimilation.”) One guy called them “Filthy-pinos.”

That brings up a few questions:

1). Were Filipinos allowed to come over back then, since we owned them?

2). If not, when did they start coming over? With the rest of the world?

3). Howcome we don’t call them filthy-pinos anymore? Among those allowed to distinguish between different Asian peoples (basically, other Asians), and even coin slurs against them, what are Filipinos commonly called?

My guess is that Filipinos were free to come over before independence. I have heard of odd regulations that pertain to Filipinos - and only Filipinos - after they received full independence post WWII. One regulation allowed Filipino men to gain US citizenship by enlisting in the US Navy and serving for a certain tenure. I don't know if this true or not, but I heard of it.

During the early days of the Vietnam war (1965-66) foreigners in the US (not immigrants, but tourists or just those who overstayed visas) could get a US green card if they enlisted in the military. I know a man who did this, a Brazilian. He was here in 1965, fleeing a crazy marriage and heard about the program and enlisted. Lucky/unlucky for him he was severely injured in a flight training accident during basic training and was never deployed to Vietnam.

I increasingly live among black people (and near farmland, but I don’t cry among either), who I imagine are bused in from the cities and told to run free. During a recent trip to Minneapolis, one of my Uber drivers was a Somali from Columbus. He told me there are a lot of them there but Minneapolis has more.

I live in suburban D.C., so seeing a hijab isn't a new thing but I was stunned by how many Somalis run around in hijabs, even the young girls in Minneapolis. Minnesota whites must be the most patient or gullible whites on the planet to continue voting for Dems as their state became Somalia North.

I’m not saying we aren’t gullible, but though Somalis are sprinkled absolutely everywhere, it’s not easy to get a feel for the sheer mass of them. When I go to Minneapolis, for instance, I go to white places. You know, the museum, sporting events, gentrified shopping, eating, and drinking places. I zoom past the black areas and don’t necessarily even see the Muslim hangouts.

My guess is that Filipinos were free to come over before independence. I have heard of odd regulations that pertain to Filipinos – and only Filipinos – after they received full independence post WWII. One regulation allowed Filipino men to gain US citizenship by enlisting in the US Navy and serving for a certain tenure. I don’t know if this true or not, but I heard of it.

We are all people of color (POC). This was pointed out years ago by Bertrand Russell when he and an Indian scholar were denied access to some building because they were white. He said “We are colored. We are pink”.

I was just watching a boring movie about the mathematician Ramanujan, and they threw Russell in as a character. I guess because it's a recognizable name, and he was useful for nonconformist sniping from the sidelines and his Noble Stance against War.

Don't remember any scenes about POCs. The main character was doubted certainly because of his race, but also because he was provincial, lacked training, and didn't express his ideas in standard form. He came across more like a crackpot, but a crackpot who was brilliant and had the right sort of intuition.

They made a lot out of him being uncomfortable and alienated, but that was mostly expressed through weather, diet, and the fact that he was sick.

I thought his beef was against whites. But I read his quote as POC, not whites, are tired of the new transplants complaining about Portland.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, the European colonists in America, while often united against the indigenous population, also fought each other over the territory and wealth in the western hemisphere.

Likewise today, the minorities, imported and domestic, are fighting each other over American territory and wealth, which while vast is not unlimited.

Does this Immigriping have more to do with the type of people who write for a living? Are writers in general more neurotic and less psychologically hardy?

I think the types of immigrants I interact with would have trouble relating to "I cried among the farmland" guy, but they aren't writers. Many ff them have endured serious hardship.

Would Amy Chua's immigrant parents have tolerated this from her, or she of her own kids?

Maybe this small number of Immigriping writers are just weirdos.

Does this Immigriping have more to do with the type of people who write for a living?

I believe it does. They’re writing for the market. If the market was paying for “How Grateful I Am to America” stories, they’d probably be capable of churning some of those.

It’s like listening to black columnists complain constantly about being black in America. They could leave any time they want to, as people do when they’re desperately unhappy with the country in which they live, but they don’t. The fact is, they like it here, and like the fact that they get rewarded for thinking of things to complain about.

This is pure comedy gold. Just as the genre of immigriping has been identified, it is already shown to have reached a peak that can't possibly be topped.
There was one part, however, that I could not quite comprehend. What does the following even mean: "“I don’t ride my bike at night,” she said. “No way. I’m Black. Even Black people are shocked to see Black people ride their bikes here.”

Because another black person would steal the bike? If not that, I can make no sense of it.

    I find this dynamic interesting:

    * When white people hate "People of Color" (and that's such a stupid term, 'white' is a color too), it's the fault of white people: we're not open minded, we're stereotyping, we don't appreciate diversity, etc.

    * When "People of Color" hate white people (“Living in Portland made me hate white people!"), it's...white people's fault. PoC's hatred of white people is "totes cool, Pinky", because white people made them feel that way.

If you're white and you're not in a constant state of self-flagellation over your privilege, you're a Wrong Thinker. Nothing else matters.

This dynamic has become quite obvious. As someone here observed, according to liberals, vilifying radical Muslims just makes more Muslims radical, while vilifying alt-right whites ends racism.

Sheriff Arpaio is a true patriot. John McCain the POS had the gall to call Trump "lawless" for pardoning him, while saying nothing about all the sanctuary city mayors and governors who lawlessly protect criminal aliens from deportation. Ann Coulter was right to call McCain, Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell the 3 gigolos of the GOP, all 3 are in office thanks to their wives' wealth and connections, and all 3 are leading the pack of RINOs who are selling out the country along with the Dems. All 3 need to be primary out in the next election, along with Lindsay Graham.

Good comment, L.H. I must have missed that Ann Coulter remark, which is weird, as I read all her stuff now. She’s come to be a real conservative/constitutionalist, albeit slowly over 10 years or so.

As for those 3 gigolo US Senators, lazy people can’t be bothered to get out of their routines once every 6 years to make this primary vote. The shame of it is that if just the real conservatives came out to give support to, and vote for, a primary challenger, they’d have a lot of pull because the normal establishment gigolos won’t get a lot of people coming out either.

Whites possess an externalized form of altruism, not present in any other race. Every race (but whites) has internalized their altruism, directing it inward, primarily to do what is good for their own respective races.
White externalized altruism looks out for the downtrodden, disadvantaged, and others who are perceived to be in need of “help”.
Let’s look at what these evil “privileged” whites have done for the United States (and the world):
    1. Well-meaning, but misguided “civil-rights (for some)” laws and statutes that have marginalized whites, while extending “extra” rights–only to people of color”. In fact, these special “civil-rights (for some)” protections, laws and statutes DO NOT APPLY to whites.
    2. Prohibiting true “freedom of association”, but only for whites. “People of color” can discriminate and form their own race-exclusive organizations and are, quite often praised for doing so.
    3. The institution of race-based “affirmative action” policies which effectively marginalize truly qualified whites, in favor of “people of color” with lesser abilities and skills.
    4. Race-based scholarships and grants are looked upon favorably EXCEPT FOR WHITES.
Every other race has downtrodden and disadvantaged types within their own respective race, and still do not offer help to those within their own race, let alone those of other races.
Almost every other race has gotten on to the “blame whitey” bandwagon, assigning blame for their own shortcomings and failures on the backs of whites (who built this society).
It is long overdue for whites to abandon their externalized altruism and turn it inward, just as every other race has done. There is absolutely no shame in looking out for “your own kind” first.
I, for one, am PROUD to be called “racist”. When the name-calling commences, I offer to shake their hands, and state “thank you for noticing”. The bewildered looks on their faces is priceless.
