  1. If Angela Merkel wins the Nobel Peace Prize it will become yet another shining example of what a joke the Nobel Peace Prize has become. She just better hope that no one on the Peace Prize Committee has a friend or loved one who gets raped by a “refugee.”

When has the Nobel Peace Prize not been a joke?

Michael King, Martin Luther King Jr. won this prize. So did terrorist Menachim Begin, the head of North Viet Nam supposedly for signing some peace treaty ending the war, shortly before the North Viet Namese Communists launched an all out invasion of conquest of the South.

  2. Meanwhile, I wonder what our Nobel-Peace-Prize-winner president will say about the hospital his forces blew up in Afghanistan today (and how many times he’ll refer to himself). Then again, will he even bother?

I would note that number of Americans killed in Afghanistan, the "good war" according to our brilliant Nobel Peace Prize winning President, totaled 554 from 2001 through 2008, when George W. was President, and 1679 from 2009 through 2014, when Barack Obama was President. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_military_casualties_in_the_War_in_Afghanistan I can't recall any occasions when our flags were lowered to half staff as a result of American soldiers killed by gunshot in Afghanistan.

You like to notice patterns and the patterns here are clear. Plus the topic never gets old because the owners never stop trying to kill the white QB position.

This season has started essentially the same as every other season since the beginning of the black running QB era:

    1. Pop – new black QBs outperform
    2. Drop – second year black QBs get game planned and underperform
    3. Flop – veteran black QBs show dramatic weakness
    4. Stop – former star black QBs are finished after five seasons

Everyone knows you can’t game plan a skilled pocket passer with a quick release in the NFL. It is the one proven method of building a dynasty. But the owners don’t care. They are instead flooding the zone with black running QBs with mediocre passing skills.

I somewhat disagree. There are definitely some examples that fit this to a T, the most noteworthy being Colin Kaepernick who looks worse than he ever has before. There also seems to be an intermediate grade who don't have the elite stand and deliver ability of an Aaron Rodgers or Tom Brady who have proved to be viable long term. In that class I'd put Russell Wilson, Cam Newton, and possibly now Tyrod Taylor and Teddy Bridgewater.

You can win a super bowl with a quarterback in this tier (cf. the Seahawks two years ago) but it requires an elite defense and running back as well.

  6. This Youtube video is only nine seconds short, so click on it for a revealing glimpse into Merkel’s character.

Background: this was the victory party of Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) on the night of 22 September 2013, which saw the CDU win a landslide victory, more than 15 percentage points ahead of its closest rival.

All the party bigs were up on stage applauding when someone handed the gentleman at center stage a flag. He is Hermann Gröhe, then CDU secretary-general. With his almost comically cubic head, buzzcut and beer belly he could be a prosperous pig farmer in rubber boots somewhere in his native Lower Rhine region, but he is one of Merkel’s slavishly loyal party soldiers.

No sooner had Gröhe accepted the German flag that Merkel snatched it away from him and disposed of it by giving it to some flunky offstage. Her facial expression is exactly that of a kindergartner who has caught one of her charges playing with feces.

Note the nervous laughter and the fear in the eyes of everyone, who never stop applauding.

Oddly, "Germans" of Turkish background do not hesitate to wave the Turkish flag in their many demonstrations in Germany. And I suppose we will soon see the ISIS flag, the Libyan flag, the Syrian flag, the Malian flag, the PLO flag etc. popping up all over Germany. Frau Merkel would not want to insult anyone by waving the German flag. That would not be inclusive.
    , @AndrewR
From an American perspective that certainly comes as a shock to see the leader of a nation so averse to her nation's flag, but then again Americans, including (or especially) our politicians, are almost undoubtedly the most nationalistic, flag-wavy people outside of certain Asian lands, so we may not be the best judges of normal behavior in 2015.

I'd be interested in hearing non-American reactions to this.

Frau Merkel is the complete opposite, both in looks and deed, of the elegant Secretary Delacourt, played by Jodi Foster in Elysium.

Delacourt, or her real life equivalent (if there is one), would be a more worthy recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize than Merkel. Simply because Merkel’s unconscionable overriding of European border law will lead to an increase in support of radical nationalist groups. As those groups are opposed by the radical left there will be a consequent breakdown in law and order.

Which is, of course, the very antithesis of ‘Peace’.

Look up the history of the German flag. This flag has only been used in 1848, during the Weimar Republic, and since 1945.

So I'd say that dislike for displaying that flag only shows how far to the left Germany is.

"but doesn’t open display of the German flag signify something considerably to the right of what displaying the American flag does over here?"

No, displaying the black-red-gold flag doesn't signify a "far right" or Nazi attitude - in fact genuine Nazis aren't fond of it because those are the "republican" colors...it was the flag of Weimar Germany. Real far rightists are more into black-white-red, the colors of Imperial Germany and later of the Swastika banner.
Flag waving isn't that popular in Germany but in recent years this has changed somewhat (especially during the soccer world championship in 2006 when black-red-gold was everywhere)...so Merkel's behaviour in the video is pretty strange.

It just means black QBs don't get better. Either they stay mediocre or they get worse. They never reach the elite level of Tom Brady, Peyton Manning or Aaron Rodgers.

The closest Black QB gotten to elite level was Warren Moon and he never played in the Super Bowl. Moon retired 15 years ago. Russel Wilson comes close, but despite the teams great success, he is regarded as game manager and not an elite QB.

I'd say that if "people" in a country suspect you're a Nazi for waving a decidedly non-Nazi flag then it will on one hand show how far to the left that country is and also it will make the population of flag-wavers more right-wing, because non-right-wing people will be more worried to be seen as Nazis.

It still doesn't mean flag-waving is totally outside the mainstream, like after winning the FIFA World Cup or even in 2006 while it was held in Germany it was definitely part of the mainstream. The fact that at that event there were people waving the flag (and that that politician also didn't drop it as if it was a swastika flag) means Merkel's reaction was overzealous. She behaved as if it was totally embarrassing and unacceptable, when in fact it wasn't.

  29. Germans felt conflicted about their country’s flag for the longest time. After WW II, Germany tried to blend into the woodwork by becoming a model European nation and eschewing anything that smacked of nationalism and even patriotism.

The world championships of soccer are a good bellwether. In 1990 (a year after reunification) during Germany’s run toward the title, few people dared to display the black-red-gold German flag. About as many hung out the WW I Reichskriegsflagge instead, either out of a general feeling of defiance or as a substitute for the (illegal) swastika.

In 2006 the world championships were held in Germany. The national side had been floundering, at the 2004 euro championships they were eliminated in the first round. In desperation, the soccer federation brought in the inexperienced Jürgen Klinsmann as coach, who promptly modernized the team by having them play attacking football, bringing in American strength trainers, and taking a risk on young players. They made it to the semi-finals where they were eliminated by the Italians in overtime.

2006 marked a big change in that Germans felt free to wave their flag in large numbers for the first time. The black-red-golds were everywhere, flapping from car windows, rooftops, and overpasses. Even the Turkish-Germans joined in. The mood was festive and joyous rather than jingoistic.

So, why did Merkel snatch away that harmless little German flag from her secretary-general. It’s because she rules more with the support of the media than that of her party. The media are heavily Red-Green (more Green than Red, actually). Journalists are “social justice warriors”, anti-patriotic, and always ready to pounce on anyone committing the slightest transgression against political correctness.

Merkel wants to control the message at all times. Her governing style has always been to steer clear of controversy and to lull people to sleep. She has no values, no principles, no respect for the law. For her, it’s all about expediency and looking out for no. 1 (not the German people — herself).

She is now in her third term as chancellor. Over the years, she has eliminated everyone who could be a threat to her. Her party’s base are up in arms over the immivasion, but the CDU politicians sold their soul for the guaranteed poll victories that Merkel’s style of co-opting Green and Social Democrat policies with a “conservative” label slapped on brings. Not a Brutus left among them.

I happen to think she is campaigning not for the Nobel prize but for the post of UN secretary-general. She has worked very hard to get her likeness on as many “selfies” taken by Muslim illegal immigrants as possible. They call her Mama Merkel now in Araby. There are 51 UN member nations in the Organization of Islamic Conferences (OIC), the biggest voting block.

Your description of Merkel's leadership style reminds me of Margaret Thatcher's. It seems to me a very female leadership limitation. That is the need to micromanage and control the tone of everyone around. Thatcher never understood that she could not keep a strong government while neutering all around her in the leadership circle. Eventually she became intolerable and had to go. So Britain was left with the rule of the matricides.

Oh, I knew it was made for the German democracy movement and banned by the Nazis. My one friend from there told me if you ran around waving a lot, people were suspicious you were a Nazi, because that's what nationalists did to get around the prohibition on Nazi symbols. But that's n=1, and she may not be all that reliable. (Note my statement was posed as a question.)

I’d say that if “people” in a country suspect you’re a Nazi for waving a decidedly non-Nazi flag then it will on one hand show how far to the left that country is and also it will make the population of flag-wavers more right-wing, because non-right-wing people will be more worried to be seen as Nazis.

It still doesn’t mean flag-waving is totally outside the mainstream, like after winning the FIFA World Cup or even in 2006 while it was held in Germany it was definitely part of the mainstream. The fact that at that event there were people waving the flag (and that that politician also didn’t drop it as if it was a swastika flag) means Merkel’s reaction was overzealous. She behaved as if it was totally embarrassing and unacceptable, when in fact it wasn’t.

This Youtube video is only nine seconds short, so click on it for a revealing glimpse into Merkel's character.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=upVYeLcCfaE

Background: this was the victory party of Merkel's Christian Democratic Union (CDU) on the night of 22 September 2013, which saw the CDU win a landslide victory, more than 15 percentage points ahead of its closest rival.

All the party bigs were up on stage applauding when someone handed the gentleman at center stage a flag. He is Hermann Gröhe, then CDU secretary-general. With his almost comically cubic head, buzzcut and beer belly he could be a prosperous pig farmer in rubber boots somewhere in his native Lower Rhine region, but he is one of Merkel's slavishly loyal party soldiers.

Oddly, “Germans” of Turkish background do not hesitate to wave the Turkish flag in their many demonstrations in Germany. And I suppose we will soon see the ISIS flag, the Libyan flag, the Syrian flag, the Malian flag, the PLO flag etc. popping up all over Germany. Frau Merkel would not want to insult anyone by waving the German flag. That would not be inclusive.

If Angela Merkel wins the Nobel Peace Prize it will become yet another shining example of what a joke the Nobel Peace Prize has become. She just better hope that no one on the Peace Prize Committee has a friend or loved one who gets raped by a "refugee."

From an American perspective that certainly comes as a shock to see the leader of a nation so averse to her nation’s flag, but then again Americans, including (or especially) our politicians, are almost undoubtedly the most nationalistic, flag-wavy people outside of certain Asian lands, so we may not be the best judges of normal behavior in 2015.

  40. “So, why did Merkel snatch away that harmless little German flag from her secretary-general. It’s because she rules more with the support of the media than that of her party. The media are heavily Red-Green (more Green than Red, actually).”

That would explain why a centre-right leader is so pro-refugee and pro-Islam.

Usually it’s the centre-left parties that are the most pro-refugee and the centre-right is slightly more conservative on “humanitarian” immigration (as can be seen with the Australian Liberal Party). The centre-right is supposed to be about money over emotion.

The political genius of the liberal left is how they can get the leadership of movements to go against the interests of their supporters. How many LGBT voters are in favour of Muslim immigration? How many environmentalists are in favour of Muslim immmigration? How many centre-right voters are in favour of Muslim immigration? How many Christians are in favour of Muslim immigration?

In each case, the majority of rank-and-file supporters are probably against more Muslim immigration but the leadership of all these movements is somehow able to use their organisations to help push pro-immigration agendas.

Maybe it’s a case of the media giving these organisations favourable coverage in exchange for supporting causes that journalists or editors like, and the leadership of these organisations towing the line by ignoring the interests of their supporters.

Meanwhile, I wonder what our Nobel-Peace-Prize-winner president will say about the hospital his forces blew up in Afghanistan today (and how many times he'll refer to himself). Then again, will he even bother?

I would note that number of Americans killed in Afghanistan, the “good war” according to our brilliant Nobel Peace Prize winning President, totaled 554 from 2001 through 2008, when George W. was President, and 1679 from 2009 through 2014, when Barack Obama was President. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_military_casualties_in_the_War_in_Afghanistan I can’t recall any occasions when our flags were lowered to half staff as a result of American soldiers killed by gunshot in Afghanistan.

If I’m not mistaken, and I can’t be arsed to look it up, the Peace Prize is awarded by a different committee than the others. I think the PP is awarded by the Norwegians. Yes, Alfred Nobel endowed the Peace Prize with a stipulation that the selection committee be appointed by Norway (probably some Norwegian Academy - I haven't checked the details). The background was that Norway had recently split away from Swedish rule, and Nobel, as a Swede, wanted to show there were no hard feelings. Ironically, Sweden has become renowned for its neutrality, whereas Norway is a keen member of Nato. Neutrality doesn't equate to pacifism: Sweden, like Switzerland, is a major arms manufacturer.

Germans felt conflicted about their country's flag for the longest time. After WW II, Germany tried to blend into the woodwork by becoming a model European nation and eschewing anything that smacked of nationalism and even patriotism.

The world championships of soccer are a good bellwether. In 1990 (a year after reunification) during Germany's run toward the title, few people dared to display the black-red-gold German flag.

It's because she rules more with the support of the media than that of her party. The media are heavily Red-Green (more Green than Red, actually). Journalists are "social justice warriors", anti-patriotic, and always ready to pounce on anyone committing the slightest transgression against political correctness.

Merkel wants to control the message at all times. Her governing style has always been to steer clear of controversy and to lull people to sleep. She has no values, no principles, no respect for the law. For her, it's all about expediency and looking out for no. 1 (not the German people -- herself).

She is now in her third term as chancellor. Over the years, she has eliminated everyone who could be a threat to her. Her party's base are up in arms over the immivasion, but the CDU politicians sold their soul for the guaranteed poll victories that Merkel's style of co-opting Green and Social Democrat policies with a "conservative" label slapped on brings. Not a Brutus left among them.

I happen to think she is campaigning not for the Nobel prize but for the post of UN secretary-general. She has worked very hard to get her likeness on as many "selfies" taken by Muslim illegal immigrants as possible. They call her Mama Merkel now in Araby. There are 51 UN member nations in the Organization of Islamic Conferences (OIC), the biggest voting block.

Your description of Merkel’s leadership style reminds me of Margaret Thatcher’s. It seems to me a very female leadership limitation. That is the need to micromanage and control the tone of everyone around. Thatcher never understood that she could not keep a strong government while neutering all around her in the leadership circle. Eventually she became intolerable and had to go. So Britain was left with the rule of the matricides.

Can you please translate that into layman? I've never had any interest in football except from a sociological and political perspective.

It just means black QBs don’t get better.
