It’s fun to compare Alphabet’s dominant Google search engine to Microsoft’s Bing search engine for politically relevant results.

I am doing this test in incognito mode so that both search engines give me their generic results rather than results tailored for me.

For example, say you wanted to look up black versus white crime rates and you start typing black white cri. Here’s what Google autocompletes as suggestions:

Screenshot 2018-12-29 17.45.29

And if you add an m at the end, making the term black white crim, Google shuts down completely suggesting any auto-completes:

Screenshot 2018-12-30 02.40.28

In contrast, here is what Bing autocompletes for black white cri:

Screenshot 2018-12-29 17.45.10

Now if you type Bing’s #2 suggestions “black white crime stats” fully into Google, here’s what Google gives you on the first page of results:

Screenshot 2018-12-29 17.46.14

But here is what Bing returns:

Screenshot 2018-12-29 17.47.26

Google promotes on its first page of results three fairly neutral sources (Channel4, Wikipedia, and USNews) and two sources that are biased toward the politically correct (SPLC and ColorLines). Bing cites one fairly neutral source (Wikipedia) and two biased toward the politically incorrect (WhitePrivilegeIsntReal and InfoWars).

It’s interesting that the excerpt chosen from the one source displayed on the first page by both Google and Bing, Wikipedia’s “Race and crime in the United States,” is ambiguous in Google and eye-opening on Bing.

Try it yourself, using, in Chrome browser, File, New Incognito Window.

  3. Channel 4* and US News are fairly neutral sources? You are bending over backwards for the Lyin’ Press here, Steve, or “being more than fair”, which is kind of a silly expression.

What did you do for incognito mode – was it with IP numbers or wiping out cookies? (Maybe a computer guy on here could fill me in on this.)

    .

    * I mean ANY Channel 4 in which the “4” stands for a dial setting on an old TV set.

  4. trelane says:

Victim politics is more relevant to Google than it is to Bing. At the algorithm level I wonder if Google the search engine thinks of itself as a victim. Or does it think of itself as a potential victimizer that must be ever-vigilant against victimizers like Bing. I wonder what ethnicity Google has. Is Google Jewish or an immigrant? Is Google a man or a woman or both? Google is definitely into victim politics so it is surely not white, Christian, heterosexual, American or male.

  5. songbird says:

Obviously, there are some serious shenanigans going on at Google.

Still, just as a kind of thought experiment, I wonder if the people using different search engines are different and that could lead to different results. Some people probably prefer the default. Then there are corporate partnerships that result in different defaults for products in different price ranges. Some people may be very brand-conscious for “Google.”

  6. Dave T. says:

Yeah I dunno, as far as the autofill suggestions, I think Google tries to avoid political autocompletes in general. They don’t suggest “trump racist”, “trump sexist”, or “trump access Hollywood”. As far as the web page results, I dunno, Id have to look into that more.

I am not sure why Google is leaving 50% of the market share for MS to gulp down but that’s what it’s doing. If half the world start using bing their market share becomes much more precarious when it is no longer a monopoly. I have been defaulting to bing for about 6mo now I think. It is serviceable. Not quite as polished but their search is factually correct instead of politically correct where there is a difference.

  9. Lot says:

“I am doing this test in incognito mode so that both search engines give me their generic results rather than one’s tailored for me.”

That helps, but they still tailor results based on past searches and browsing from your IP address. Ever notice ads that seem to be targeting other people who use the Internet on the same connection but different device?

You can ask Google not to do this in its privacy settings, but this requires saving a cookie that won’t be used in incognito mode.

Google is the best search engine and hard to completely boycott. However, 90% of searches you are looking for a particular popular site or common generic info. I suggest using DuckDuckGo first, then Bing if that fails, and Google as a last resort. This likely would reduce your use of Google search by 95%. DDG is also improving at a steady pace, so if you tried it and didn’t like it a while ago, give it another chance.

Potential censorship/antifa/dox targets might consider a proxy service. These often allow you to choose particular IP address locations. There are so many of them and their pricing and relative quality isn’t very transparent unfortunately, so I can’t suggest any “consensus” top pick. I do know that free ones are all scams, and the leading ones are about $30-60 a year.

  10. Mikey says:

And if you Google “white privileged isn’t real”, Google won’t even show you that site, whereas Bing gives it as the first result. So in Google, they force you to manually type in the full URL.

  11. One reason Google may not want to link to whiteprivilegeisntreal.org is that the site has its own interesting entry titled “Google is racist.”

Among other points, they note that when you add the term “white” to a search (e.g., “white scientists”), Google actually increases the number of black results from what you get if you just type “scientists.”

    Suggestions: 10 anodyne phrases

    Bing:

    Search term: black white i

Suggestions: 8 phrases, with “black white iq gap” at number 4 after “black white income gap”

If “black white iq” is entered into Google, no suggestions are given. In Bing you get:

    black white iq gap
    black white iq difference
    black white iq distribution
    black white iq gap closing
    black white iq bell curve
    iq black vs white
    iq black versus white

If you complete the search for “black white iq” however, Google returns as number 1 Noam Stein’s “Cherry picked science in Vox’s Charles Murray article” at Medium, the piece Murray endorsed as debunking Turkheimer, et al.

Bing gives an infobox with the text:

Myth: The black/white IQ gap is 15 points and growing. Fact: The black/white IQ gap is 7-10 points and shrinking. Nationally representative IQ tests show a black/white IQ gap of 7 to 10 points. Academic achievement tests, for those who consider them valid measurements of IQ, show an average gap of about 10 points.

    Take that, mythologizers!

The rest of the results are reasonable.

The Bing infobox is from an obscure site, and you wouldn’t think it would be pulled up algorithmically. Most Google infoboxes come from major or otherwise known websites. So that infobox has me puzzled.

  18. It looks like David Cole’s “Deep Thoughts* – Color Me Raped” in Taki’s Magazine might be worth a read or re-read at this time with respect to getting black-on-white stats out of the DOJ.
Also his “Ruth Bader Ginsburg….Shiksa?” was Hitler-hillarious with lines such as “This girl [the non-Jewish Felicity Jones who plays RBG] is so Aryan she could give Himmler’s corpse a boner.” One could imagine (but probably shouldn’t) Merkel’s boner (hat tip to Steve Sailer) or quasi-Stasi clitoris engorged on account of all those incoming military-age and marriage-age (Islam also has a provision for “temporary wives”)
Philistine (see well known etymology of “Palestinians”) phalluses.

    * Deep Thoughts – a rip-off of or homage to the old National Lampoon’s “Jack Handey”? It might have been either JH or “Ed Bluestone” who penned such groaners as “It is better to light one cross than to curse the darkies.” Regarding the previous thread of African-American scientists, the National Lampoon Radio Hour provided very guilty “pleasures” (for some; not me, of course) of a horribly racist send up of George Washington Carver. GWC’s assistant was named “Goober” and “Mister Carver” envisioned (if memory serves) the comming invention of the “Elecktricksickal Telephono-Peanut” (or was it “Long Distance Dial-A-Peanut”?) and so forth. I don’t remember any “Black Swan” moments, but the Radio Hour also featured *very* condensed versions of classics such as Dostoevsky’s “The Idiot” (Bill Murray provided the voice of the idiot) narrated by “Roger Deswans.”

You can use a Tor privacy tab in the Brave browser. Google will make you click on a “prove you are human” thing when using Tor, and it will be slower than normal surfing, but it’s probably the best way to get “clean” search results, or to hide from Google tracking you in general.

Channel4 is notorious for the Jordan Peterson interview. The interviewer (Cathy Newman) replies to every statement with: “So you’re saying…”, then proceeds to completely misinterpret what Peterson has just told her. It’s a blatant attempt to paint him as a wrong-thinker. Channel 4 is unashamedly biased towards the politically correct.

Indeed if you click through to the link from your search result, Channel 4’s Fact Check (why is it that only the left feels the need to check facts?) does its best to cast doubt on the black crime rate. No actual figures are presented; and the so-called fact check is quick to mention racism and poverty as likely explanations. Liberal bias is the default position at Channel 4.

    > they still tailor results based on past searches and browsing from your IP address

You may want to get a new IP before searching in incognito mode provided you got a dynamic IP as most private users have. Most routers have a web interface that allows for it. The new IP will point to your neighbourhood, too, but it’s a start.

    > a proxy service
The Opera browser offers a free VPN with three regions: Asia, Europe, America. It mostly helps when bypassing geolocation-based restrictions, sometimes you have to try all options. It won’t help against the NSA snooping on you, (maybe they run the joint…) but it helps against search engines tracking you. Choosing a different region may change search results, too, bc a different public is served.

If you’re paranoid you also need to change your browser’s fingerprint. It’s easiest if you just switch to a different browser that you don’t use regularly. Also, most browsers have extensions that allow to switch the user agent string, that should derail some snoopers, though occasionally it causes trouble when browsing. (e. g. better don’t identify as an old browser, sometimes you get blocked or redirected to an old-browser info page) There are intricate extensions that jumble your browser’s fingerprint even more…

Using Firefox’ Tor browser version (or some other Tor implementation that reroutes everything from your PC) is an additional step. It tends to slow down your connection, though. If you got enough time on your hands you can combine all of the above, donning a top hat or a beanie…

It would be an immense labor to validate one’s suspicions about Wikipedia bias because almost every conceivable subject is covered. Wikipedia invites one and all to become a Wikipedia editor and help improve the articles. If there is a political bias it would have to be the averaged out bias of the thousands and thousands of editors. Every article is open to criticism. There are no hurdles to becoming an editor. You just sign up as one. As an editor myself, my very occasional editing has been limited to adding a fact or two when I have more personal knowledge than whoever wrote the article. I have never gotten into the weeds about divisive subjects. I do know that there is a managerial infrastructure that can lock certain hot-button subjects lest they be “hacked” “edited” back and forth to the end of time. I haven’t but you’all maybe should Wikipedize your favorite divisive topic.

For non-civilians, a super-simple, reasonably good solution, not using an actual HTTP proxy, but just a SOCKS proxy which forwards HTTP requests to another machine:

    1) Get a cheap Linux VM with 500 MiB RAM, 8 GiB disk at Bezo’s Large House of Computah Infrastructure (like a “t2.nano” running ${FAVORITE_DISTRO} or even ${MUH_OPENBSD}). Give it a dynamic IP. USD 10 per month or so if it is running all the time, cheapest is the Virginia site I think. Some time investment needed in setting it up of course.
    2) From your local Linux machine, connect to that machine with SSH (as if you were logging in normally) but open SOCKS endpoint locally on your home network interface (i.e. 127.0.0.1) using a random port, let’s say 22900.

Option “-D” fires up SOCKS proxying:

    ssh -D127.0.0.1:22900 ${remote_user}@${remote_machine_ip}

    3) Configure Firefox to use SOCKS proxy which is now live at 127.0.0.1:22900 under “triple burger menu” > Preferences > General > Network Settings (at the very bottom) > Manual proxy configuration > SOCKS Host 127.0.0.1 port 22900. Plus. “Proxy DNS when using SOCKS 5”
    4) ???
    5) Pretty good.

The problem is that Mr Steve needs to get out ( of America ) more. By his own admission, he’s hardly been out of the States in the 21st Century. He seems to like nice parts of England – he was quite taken by the Mendips, if I remember correctly. Could some wealthy donor send him to a nice part of England – The Chilterns, Lake District or wherever – for a few weeks ? The quid pro quo would be that he would have to assiduously watch BBC and Channel 4 for the first 3 or 4 days as well as read the Guardian newspaper. Any idea of those organs being fairly neutral sources would be quickly dispelled.
Of course, there may be another reason why Mr Steve no longer ventures abroad. I’m sure the FBI have a large file on him. We wouldn’t want him to be suddenly barred from returning to America because there is some “discrepancy” in his passport. Or worse.

I wonder if the Google engineers ever wonder how they went from being a website focused on getting accurate results to being one that’s a massive promoter of fake results, lies, and propaganda. Do they really lack all insight into themselves?

The Google engineers have perfect insight into themselves. They looked inside and found only greed. The PC craziness is being driven by people at the top in our society paying for it. Everyone else believes what they are paid to believe.

  76. During the 2016 presidential campaign season, I tried this tactic, hoping to get less PC spoon-feeding. I noticed a little difference between Google & Bing—a little less PC manipulation from Bing—but not anything like as much as these crime stats reveal. It was not enough to make me switch.

In a nation full of underemployed and out-of-the-laborforce citizens, I notice that both of these tech companies employ a ton of foreign nationals, even though the USA has more STEM / IT grads than most countries.

Added to the mass replacement of US citizens in other industries, it is a type of corporate-led colonization, a type of inside-job colonization, led by our own corporate-controlled government.

The citizens of India did not tolerate for long a much smaller group of British foreign nationals, colonizing their nation, but US citizens are willingly submitting to colonization, placidly watching bigly corporations working in conjunction with bigly government to replace the population of native-born US citizens in the labor force, particularly the white ones.

So, it is not really surprising that anti-native bias shows up in search results, controlled by pro-colonization forces.

Since MS is pro-colonization, too, I am surprised that the Bing employees are more willing to be anti-PC.

But unlike in the construction, warehousing, landscaping and other industries, where the replacement of US workers often means domination of jobs by foreign nationals from Latin America, the tech industry often staffs with Indian foreign nationals, rather than US citizens. At least, they speak English and come from a functioning democracy, but it is still a replacement of US citizens, contributing to economic misery and resentment among the native-born population.

Since corporate owners do everything, including supporting colonization of their own country, for bottom-line reasons, it is probably just a follow-the-money thing.

Maybe, the different approach to PC policing is just a marketing thing, with Bing using any old method—even honesty about race and violent crime stats—to raise its sales numbers from rock-bottom.

Maybe, Google management is more micro-managing, intervening more than the management at Bing to impose a PC form of politeness, regardless of how brutal the Internet gets beyond all of the protections for minority groups in the USA, thinking that it helps their worldwide sales numbers since whites are just a small minority world-wide and a shrinking part of the prime-buying-aged US population. Kumbaya.

Or maybe, the foreign nationals working for US tech companies are just not as innately PC, with far less social pressure exerted on them to be PC in their home countries, especially if Bing management is more hands-off and less hyper-PC.

All people with darker skin-pigmentation hues are not PC, not even close to as PC as their white colleagues who are held to different standards.

It is not just Indians. I have seen similar things, working with different groups of Hispanics, like the time a Cuban salesperson made a Mexican customer cry. Since they were conversing in Spanish, other salespeople had no idea why the customer was crying, but it is a major no no to make a paying customer cry, regardless of your views about political matters or anything else. You’re there to serve.

In sales, I have also worked with Indians, non-technical Indians, and though they were perfectly nice to me, they said things to Black customers that would get me fired in a hot minute.

One Black customer literally moved to my desk in the middle of a transaction with an Indian salesperson, asking me when I worked. This paying customer was treated very rudely, with the salesperson audaciously suggesting that she was inferior due to the type of product she was buying. She did not wish to be insulted while handing us hundreds of dollars in hard-earned money on a regular basis.

This salesperson had a degree and other certifications. This salesperson was also old enough to know better. It is just that minorities can get away with overt racial commentary, even in the middle of a workplace, whereas whites have to watch every word they say.

This salesperson also told me that, although many Indians are dark, they do not feel like Blacks are equal to them.

    I was agog.

Again, I would he fired in five minutes for that type of a remark.

Although this salesperson was smart, funny and, overall, a good colleague, this salesperson also told me, laughingly, that the Indian customers would not buy from me.

They were race-loyal—or racist—in other words, and that is perfectly fine since they are in a minority group.

Once again, I would be fired for such a statement———fired in one second, regardless of my high sales numbers, my hard work and the bills I needed to cover.

It is good that Bing is shedding a few pounds of PC fakery, but I am just saying that it might not be a political thing.

Led by minorities themselves—often sneeringly, as if they regard the PC narratives of white liberals with complete contempt—a lot of PC-shattering stuff goes on out in the real world that is completely ignored by all of the media narratives.

    “Diversity is a strength.”

So you say. If you would document an example or two, I would have to accept your claim. Are you serious about Wikipedia articles praising sodomy? I checked out the Wikipedia article on sodomy which seems to be a dispassionate review of sodomy in various times and places. Here’s a sample –

The Hellenistic Jewish philosopher Philo (20 BC – 50 AD) described the inhabitants of Sodom in an extra biblical account:

“As men, being unable to bear discreetly a satiety of these things, get restive like cattle, and become stiff-necked, and discard the laws of nature, pursuing a great and intemperate indulgence of gluttony, and drinking, and unlawful connections; for not only did they go mad after other women, and defile the marriage bed of others, but also those who were men lusted after one another, doing unseemly things, and not regarding or respecting their common nature, and though eager for children, they were convicted by having only an abortive offspring; but the conviction produced no advantage, since they were overcome by violent desire; and so by degrees, the men became accustomed to be treated like women, and in this way engendered among themselves the disease of females, and intolerable evil; for they not only, as to effeminacy and delicacy, became like women in their persons, but they also made their souls most ignoble, corrupting in this way the whole race of men, as far as depended on them” (133-35; ET Jonge 422-23).[25]

So far as I see, the article does not promote sodomy. As I said, I am willing to accept your argument but you would have to prove your claim with specific examples which you do not do. You write “while data lionising Orientals, Negroes, sodomites, Mohammadans, etc. are emphasised.” That’s quite an indictment. Show us the Wikipedia articles that lionize Negroes, etc. and I will believe you. Until then, I would have to assume that you are misinformed.

Yes yes, I know it has a different meaning, and my father did too, but it is a “terrible” way to say it. You left out what I wrote immediately after that, namely “to waste.” The slogan puts two negatives together: mind>terrible thing, and mind>to waste.

-(-1) =1 but is literally a “negative” way to express it. Depressing.

I am talking about style and negativity, not literal meanings here.

A recurring problem among some of the “commentarat” here is a tendency to think too literally and to try to show how smart you are by correcting errors that are not there. If you disagree with the point, fine, but you missed the point or you don’t even understand it. Re-read my whole comment and try again.

My comment is a terrible thing to misunderstand.

We wouldn’t want him to be suddenly barred from returning to America because there is some “discrepancy” in his passport. Or worse.

He is adopted. Are you making this a “birther” issue?

    USNews I know nothing about.

If you’re talking about the periodical, it was conservative enough in 1945 to condemn our use of nuclear weapons on civilians. Or at least question it, which in 1945 was the same thing.

During WWII did they try to muzzle these “peace churches” by cutting off their paper rations?

Checking “peace churches” + “paper shortage” no search engine seems to know anything. Please tell us about it.

The War Production Board rationed paper. That by itself is a political decision.

There was plenty of self-censorship during this period, what the ACLU and others now call “the chilling effect”.

From Paul Fussell’s Wartime, about the Council on Books in Wartime, which decided what our fighting men could read:

There was some censorship: Isabel Dubois, chief librarian for the navy, blackballed James T. Farrell’s Studs Lonigan– too exciting erotically. And there were some conspicuous absentees in the list of titles, books of a pacifistic tendency which the selection committee considered threats to morale. Thus the troops were not vouchsafed acquaintance to with such First World War masterpieces of disillusion as Robert Graves’s Good-bye to All That, Remarque’s All Quiet on the Western Front, Barbusse’s Under Fire, Sassoon’s Memoirs of George Sherston, Richard Aldington’s Death of a Hero, Cummings’s The Enormous Room, Hemingway’s A Farewell to Arms, John Dos Passos’s Three Soldiers, or even Edmund Blunden’s quiet and gentle Undertones of War. And certainly not Dalton Trumbo’s jolting account of the consciousness of a Great War multiple amputee, Johnny Got His Gun.

They needn’t have worried about the last. Trumbo censored it himself, doing the same Muscovite 180 as Pete Seeger.

Hard to tell if serious. Simply attempt some documented, factual edits on even remotely ‘woke’ topics and watch them get reverted within hours. Incidentally, people aren’t here to do your homework for you, but if you’re really interested in the truth of the matter, you’ll find it on your own.

You won’t cite examples. That’s a cop out. A commenter alleged that Wikipedia’ article on sodomy promoted that practice. I looked at the article and there was no promotion of sodomy. You urge me to do my own homework. As the English language Wikipedia has many millions of articles, that is an absurd request.

The VPN company can avoid that by purging their logs on a time scale too short for the legal process to keep up.  “Oh, sorry, our logs are used for catching spammers and other problems for the Internet as a whole.  We flush them every 2 hours.  The user info from last week that you wanted is long gone.  Please be more prompt with your requests and we can comply with them.”

Any good VPN company is going to do exactly that.

He’s also wrong. Non-ionizing radiation (like those from cell phones) doesn’t have enough energy to cause DNA damage

No, YOU are wrong.  Coherent photons can do things that thermal (incoherent) photons cannot.  Your microwave oven is proof.  It operates at 2.45 GHz, a wavelength of 12.2 cm; by Wien’s displacement law a blackbody with a radiation peak at 12.2 cm has a temperature of a mere 0.024 K.  Your microwave can generate electric fields strong enough to create plasmoids; it has an effective temperature of thousands or millions of degrees.  Can it damage DNA?  It coagulates proteins by indirect thermal effects; who knows what it can do by direct electric effects?  We can’t trust the authorities saying “no effect” because there are too many interests on the side of making money from it, a la tobacco.

  134. @Anonymouse

    Have you read this piece?

I’ve been reading Mr. Sailer’s work for over a decade. I cannot recall a single instance of his “describing black people as inherently lacking judgment” and the claim that he has, preposterously, cites not his writing anything of the sort, but rather it cites a hit piece on Steve in Tablet. Primary sources are always preferable to secondary sources. If you wish yo make the case that Jung has written that Freud is a poopy-head, you cite the book, page, and edition of Jung’s wrtiing. You do not claim Jung wrote those words and then cite a magazine article by someone who hates Jung and insists “Jung once called Freud a poopyhead.” This is stuff any serious historian, journalist, librarian, scholar understands. Hell, it’s why we typically exclude hearsay as evidence in courts of law. Wokepedia goes on in the same sentence to state that Sailer claims “Jews control the media.” Does he? Has he? Again, I’m willing to be corrected, but I’ve never encountered that sentiment from Steve. He has written about Jews’ disproportionate representation in managerial positions at newspapers, television networks, and so on, but that’s not the same thing, and I am not just splitting hairs. Again, is Steve’s essay about how “Jews control the media” cited for this proposition? No, of course not; another hit-piece about him is cited.

I could spend all day citing examples like this one. If you don’t see them you aren’t paying attention, and I have better things to do than catalogue them for you.

If I am wrong, and Steve has indeed written the things claimed, I welcome correction from him or others. I’d nevertheless wonder why his actual writings aren’t cited by Wokepedia, and I reiterate there are myriad other examples to support my case.

    I could

This story, which I overheard in a bar, is not on point, but somehow your post reminded me of it, so here goes.

One afternoon in 1986 a San Francisco DJ named Bobby was drinking with a friend at an iconic bar next to the Presidio called Liverpool Lil”s. The friend asked what should we do tonight? Bobby said, half-jokingly, “Ray Charles is playing this little club in Minneapolis – wanna go?” So they did. Around 10 pm, Ray Charles walked in with a white girl on each arm. Bobby said to his friend, “Look at this guy, he thinks he’s white.,” and Charles said, “fuck you, Bobby.”

Didn’t Philip Agee get his passport confiscated for saying some things the CIA didn’t like. I was thinking more on those lines. Mr Steve goes off to the ancestral homeland for a holiday. He tries to return, but is told his passport is invalid and he’s not getting a new one. He is stranded in Switzerland.
Now I’m sure that iSteve could continue to operate from Lausanne, but it wouldn’t be the same as LA iSteve. For a start, his access to American material would be more restricted – he couldn’t just go down the road to watch LA Opera Workshop or whatever you call it, for example.

A Happy New Year to you and yours, Mr Caesar.

Last time I saw the article on the Bhagwan that poisoned the Wendy’s salad bar in the 80s, it was screamingly obviously written by the cult. Gatekeeping and informational bottlenecking is surely harder in academia and yet there it is. The only way this can work is with some sort of fairness doctrine where dissenting opinions that disgust the real editor are protected. Everybody already saw how that worked when lyingpress sites had comments, so that will never happen. The master’s house will not enable property ownership for people outside the master’s family.
