From The Guardian:

How video games are fuelling the rise of the far right
by Alfie Bown
Violent, isolationist and misogynist desires course through games – and push rightwing ideologies on players

Mon 12 Mar 2018

… First, rightwing ideologies have been overrepresented and dominant throughout the history of video games. Although affected by context, video games have long focused on the expulsion of “aliens” (Space Invaders to XCOM), fear of impure infection (Half-Life to The Last of Us), border control (Missile Commander to Plants vs Zombies), territory acquisition (Command & Conquer to Splatoon), empire building (Civilization to Tropico), princess recovery (Mario to Zelda), and restoration of natural harmony (Sonic to FarmVille).

He does have a point …

Yes, he does. Unfortunately, it's on the top of his head.

It's just more projection from a point and sputter Globoshlomo cretin.

  2. Yeah, but my favorite game was always Donkey Kong, whose hero was a swarthy immigrant pizza maker named Mario; look how I turned out.

  3. just another ‘attack european men’ article, steve. don’t analyze it at face value. Alfie Brown has NOTHING to say about the 200 million asian nerds playing the same exact videos games for the last 30 years.

what? are the 200 million video game incels in japan and korea and china about to suddenly rise up and overthrow the liberal west? they can’t even get out of their own basements. kissless virgins who have never thrown a punch.

write a column exposing these seemingly unrelated articles for what they actually are. a direct attack on the people who make the US and europe function. this article, like most articles today, have nothing at all to do with the putative subject matter.

They don’t make their own video games so much as incorporate their ideology into (especially big blockbuster) games. Vox Day does a superb job explaining SJW infiltration of big game studios (and other industries) in his books.

I don't think the term "god emperor" originated in Warhammer 40,000. I don't think the term was originated by Frank Herbert, who wrote God Emperor of Dune, published in 1981. I'll bet you could go back to at least the 19th century, in works about the late Roman empire.

It kinda sounds like the editors demanded something bad about video games and Bown delivered via stretching the truth a bit. I never imagined FarmVille being parallel to National Socialism initiatives to return to rural lifestyles.

There’s a tone in the writing that suggests it’s a mandatory story. That the editors wanted it and he gave exaggerated examples of games that the editors didn’t know anything about.

I remember when the last gasps of the Jerry Falwell types in the 2000s condemned video games for immoral context (correct) and inciting youth violence (largely absurd.)

They tried pinning the murders of Troy Victorino (“The Xbox Killer”) on MKULTRA like indoctrination by violent video games. The thing is, the guy was black. Christian Zionists don’t like to point out the black-on-black murder ratio either. I remember near the end of the book ”Ghettoside” that video games partially helped decrease black gang violence. That it was safer for them to play Grand Theft Auto indoors than actually do it in real life.

The whole video games = violence seems like a culture war issue that only entices the motherhood demographic. The SJW types are just really late to (pun intended) the game.

  11. This is just more evidence that every Leftist critique is nothing but the plain description of reality in pejorative chest tones. There is a sense in which their endless deconstructions are all true. Reality really is hierarchical, patriarchal, sexist, racist, cis-normed, and militant. This provides endless grist for the critic’s mill, and this is the reason why their academic papers flow off the pen with such prolix ease.

The missing question is, In the name of what is all this being condemned?

He does have a point …

Well, its a point in the sense that the only unifying theme of the Left is the relentless assault on everything good, true and beautiful, so therefore, they automatically make everything good true and beautiful into "far right", "rightwing" and conservative by default.

This is a"problem" of their own making.

It is a tiny corollary that makers of popular video games also must needs portray goodness, truth and beauty so end up being in the Left's designated hate camp.

    , @Jack D

In the name of what is all this being condemned?

In the name of the Revolution, as always. The new utopian order where hierarchy, patriarchy, sexism, racism, cis-normism and every other bad thing will be abolished and we will live in a world of egalitarianism where no one will rule over the other and everyone will have his needs met. Now every other attempt to do this has failed spectacularly and the result has always been a new order that is even worse than the one that it replaced, but that doesn't mean that we shouldn't stop trying to abolish the current horrible order - maybe THIS time we will get it right.
    , @Old Palo Altan
In the name of whom rather.

And the answer is Satan, the first egalitarian.
    , @Forbes
The left-liberal-progressive critique starts from the premise that human nature doesn't exist, that man can be molded to perfection--a perfection the left decides, i.e. all nurture, no nature. Reality itself is a limitation, a constraint that must and can be overcome--in order for true liberation to be realized.

Well that’s just ecoterrorism right there!

  16. What “rightwing ideologies” does he have in mind? Since when is repelling armed invasion (as such; not necessarily including when you hate your host population and want it dead), territorial acquisition, and empire-building right-wing? Has this author ever observed an actual leftist government? As for restoration of natural harmony, that sounds like environmentalism. Which is not commonly associated with the right these days.

In a vague way he may be correct. Not on the ideological level, but on the level of primal emotion. The right is said* to be like the wolf. The left are a bunch of rabbits. Wolves conform to pack hierarchy, control their turf, hunt their prey, protect their fellow wolves. Rabbits have sex.

Video games are active, and they can’t feature sex. At least not explicitly. So what’s left after puzzles and sports and bouncing around abstract figures? Violence. This side versus that. Which is rightwing in only the most incidental way possible.

  17. How video games are fuelling the rise of the far right

    FIFY.

Seriously, based on these criteria, is there a single “game” in all of history that doesn’t push “far right” ideology? Even crossword puzzles and Sudoku implicitly endorse a hierarchical view of intelligence.

  18. I am playing Dying Light at the moment. You certainly kill a lot of zombies but I do not feel any urge to go into the nearest town and kill foreigners::

    • Replies: @Jack D
That's the whole point - video games in which you shoot the "other" are just sublimated violence. You know you can't (and in real life would never even want to) shoot the annoying drug addicts and homeless people ("zombies") who are camped out under the overpass or the illegal aliens ("space aliens") who litter the park and play too loud music at their barbecues - you would never so much as touch a single one of them unless you were being attacked. But you can shoot "zombies" and "space aliens" and the like on screen as much as you want - they are safe targets for your aggression. By the dozen, by the hundreds - you can get it all out of your system. There is nothing wrong with that. Even my dog knows the difference between play and reality.
    , @Sean
Zombies are the enemy within, even members of your own family may become them. Women and children as zombies is good psychological preparation for killing them in real life.

    Anders Breivik, Adam Lanza ...

Do you want me to list the shooters who spent all day and night playing those games?

  19. I wonder how he’d define the politics of Candy Crush, or that Pokemon hunting game/craze from a few years back. But maybe he has a point, the Mario Brothers were typical fascists in the Mussolini tradition.

  20. The obvious question qui se pose: is the author a gigantic fag?

For verily it is written in the Book of Billy Ginger-Nuts (in the Psalm entitled “Ahhhh, Go Fuck Yourself, Ya Fucking Mope“… Dude, everything the guys says sounds totally fucking faggy.

( Real Racing 3 (RR3)is not about any of the shit that Lord Fagleroy whined about like a little bitch. It is, however, a gigantic time vampire unless you discipline yourself to only play it when you’re having a shit).

  21. Video games causing school shootings is a Bad Orange Man myth… but shooting cartoon aliens is definitely turning young men into bad-thinking xenophobes.

  24. anon[189] • Disclaimer says:

The people who read the Guardian don’t play video games and don’t know anything about them. The Guardian writes junk like this to satisfy an audience of smug leftists who want to imagine their social inferiors as bad people; it’s pure projection, as is always the case with this crowd. As for most of what the Guardian writes on this subject, it’s poorly reasoned and intellectually dishonest – cherry picked and mischaracterized. I would hardly call anything tailored to the basic human condition as “right wing”. These games are made because they sell, not because they promote any ideology.

What the Guardian is really doing here is trying to create a false narrative of bias in order to force video game developers into including fringe propaganda into their products. The left has been engaged in a coordinated effort across several publications, including Kotaku and Polygon (among others), to force the narrative that games need “politics”. Several of these outlets have used dishonest tactics like misquoting developers as saying they know there is a problem in the industry with not having “politics” in games when there isn’t and they know there isn’t.

Left unstated: they mean their politics. One problem, though: consumers of these titles are disproportionately white, male, and heterosexual; they don’t want the Guardian’s idiocy in their games, and they have successfully boycotted several franchises that have included offensive male stereotypes and themes. EA’s Battlefield V tried to claim women in trench coats (disabled women at that) were common on WWII front lines; they also offensively wrote men out of real historical events and replaced them with unlikely female protagonists. It crashed and burned. Bioware’s Dragon Age franchise killed itself by making all its female characters ugly so as to appease “male gaze” feminists who don’t buy games … and they famously inserted trans identity politics and punished players for not wanting to be with a transexual after they found out the character’s identity. Predictably, men didn’t buy it and the franchise is all but dead now, and Bioware is on the verge of being shut down. In contrast, Polish company CDPR made The Witcher 3 with beautiful characters and crushed Dragon Age, winning game of the year and rocketing the company to international acclaim. And there are lots of other examples. Politically correct trash doesn’t sell – at all. Make it at your own peril.

The original arcade game Gauntlet (1985) had an optional female character which was good because it attracted girls to the game. The important word is 'optional' though. Taking away the male characters and forcing everybody to play as a woman is just bad business sense. You're leaving money on the table.

Space Invaders focused on repelling a hostile alien invasion. XCOM was also about countering a hostile alien invasion. It’s not as if these games were about expelling E.T. from your backyard.

It’s a child’s game with cartoon characters who run around and spray each other with paint. Splatoon, from the wiki: “The game centers around characters known as Inklings—beings that can transform between humanoid and squid forms, and hide or swim through colored ink sprayed on surfaces using gun, bucket, or brush-based weaponry.”

    “princess recovery (Mario to Zelda)”

Lol, wut? These people need to get out more. Women liked to be rescued by the right man. Pretty Woman was a female fantasy about a rich guy rescuing a poor girl. Fifty Shades of Grey is a “series that follows the deepening relationship between a college graduate and a young business magnate. It is notable for its explicitly erotic scenes featuring elements of sexual practices involving BDSM (bondage/discipline, dominance/submission, and sadism/masochism).”

“and restoration of natural harmony (Sonic to FarmVille)”

The former is game where a blue hedgehog runs fast and collects gold coins. The latter is a farming simulator. You grow stuff. THIS is what passes for intellectual discourse these days? No, no, no. That writer had to be making fun of the Guardian. Otherwise, he knows exactly nothing about video games. You know, other than the brief Wikipedia research he did.

When game makers like Oculus VR creator Palmer Luckey support righwing and right-libertarian causes, we’re not seeing a new trend of gamers turning to the right, but a clue to the structure of gaming and its historical role in incubating such ideologies.

The dumbshittery is amazing. OTOH this is just Guardian polyfiller with low nutritional value.

In such a view of life there is no room, for instance, for patriotism and the military virtues. The Socialist who finds his children playing with soldiers is usually upset, but he is never able to think of a substitute for the tin soldiers; tin pacifists somehow won’t do.

The people who read the Guardian don't play video games and don't know anything about them. The Guardian writes junk like this to satisfy an audience of smug leftists who want to imagine their social inferiors as bad people; it's pure projection, as is always the case with this crowd. As for most of what the Guardian writes on this subject, it's poorly reasoned and intellectually dishonest - cherry picked and mischaracterized. I would hardly call anything tailored to the basic human condition as "right wing". These games are made because they sell, not because they promote any ideology.

What the Guardian is really doing here is trying to create a false narrative of bias in order to force video game developers into including fringe propaganda into their products. The left has been engaged in a coordinated effort across several publications, including Kotaku and Polygon (among others), to force the narrative that games need "politics". Several of these outlets have used dishonest tactics like misquoting developers as saying they know there is a problem in the industry with not having "politics" in games when there isn't and they know there isn't.

Left unstated: they mean their politics. One problem, though: consumers of these titles are disproportionately white, male, and heterosexual; they don't want the Guardian's idiocy in their games, and they have successfully boycotted several franchises that have included offensive male stereotypes and themes. EA's Battlefield V tried to claim women in trench coats (disabled women at that) were common on WWII front lines; they also offensively wrote men out of real historical events and replaced them with unlikely female protagonists. It crashed and burned. Bioware's Dragon Age franchise killed itself by making all its female characters ugly so as to appease "male gaze" feminists who don't buy games ... and they famously inserted trans identity politics and punished players for not wanting to be with a transexual after they found out the character's identity. Predictably, men didn't buy it and the franchise is all but dead now, and Bioware is on the verge of being shut down. In contrast, Polish company CDPR made The Witcher 3 with beautiful characters and crushed Dragon Age, winning game of the year and rocketing the company to international acclaim. And there are lots of other examples. Politically correct trash doesn't sell - at all. Make it at your own peril.

Actually they’re disproportionately non-white. Like with films, Hispanics are the top consumers

From that wikipedia page: "There are mixed results on the demographics of people who play video games. While one study mentions that African American and Hispanic children make up the majority of video game players,[2] a study by Pew Research Center finds that 73.9% of white children play video games compared to 26.1% of nonwhite children.[3]"

My son tells me game demographics depend on the game: Fortnite (free) has a lot of hispanics here in California, but, then again, it's popular with everyone; Overwatch ($40) and Red Dead Redemption ($50) are pretty white; League of Legends and DOTA tend to be Asian. The more competitive the game the more Asian. Demographics spread when you include cell phone and tablet games in the definition of gaming. When you narrow to console and pc games I think you're looking at primarily asian and white males, which is reinforced when you look at the makeup of e-sport clubs/tournaments in schools. Games, gaming laptops/PCs, not to mention DLC (downloadable content) are pricey. Lots of gaming stats here, but suspiciously devoid of racial information: https://www.wepc.com/news/video-game-statistics/#pc-gaming

  49. What would a video game designed by the Left (Stalin, Pol Pot, anarchists, etc.) look like?

  50. @AnotherDad

Wow, it's almost like the actions people consider heroic or even just normally interesting are now "far right".

Might this not say something about the quality of the dominant ideology?

    Right wing:

    by Alfie Bown
Violent, isolationist and misogynist desires course through games – and push rightwing ideologies on players

    Mon 12 Mar 2018

… First, rightwing ideologies have been overrepresented and dominant throughout the history of video games. … .

He does have a point …

Well, its a point in the sense that the only unifying theme of the Left is the relentless assault on everything good, true and beautiful, so therefore, they automatically make everything good true and beautiful into “far right”, “rightwing” and conservative by default.

This is a”problem” of their own making.

It is a tiny corollary that makers of popular video games also must needs portray goodness, truth and beauty so end up being in the Left’s designated hate camp.

  59. Meanwhile, in Sweden…

    https://www.zerohedge.com/political/swedish-rapper-calls-white-people-be-shot

Nigerian-born rap artist Jesse Ekene Nweke Conable called for his fans to “shoot” white people while urging, “Take them as slaves and treat them even worse.”

“We, blacks” will “become number one and take over these whites,” said Conable, adding, “Like these whites took us as slaves we should take them as slaves and treat them even worse.”

“We’ll take their bitches and we’ll take their money,” he continued. “To be perfectly honest, we will be the best race ever. We are African warriors, they are not on our level. This is just the beginning, black power.”

The comments were made in a rant posted on a closed Instagram group called Barasvarta (“Blacks only”), according to news outlet Samhällsnytt.

Making the shape of a gun with his hand, Conable asserted, “If any white guy or white girl is trying to talk shit about you, shoot them! If they talk shit about your family, shoot them!”

The rapper appears to think he has carte blanche to make violent racist threats against white people, posting a meme that says, “You cannot be racist if you are not white.”

After Conable’s comments were reported on by the media, he announced that he would ‘delete’ the “snitch” who leaked them.

Conable, who emigrated to Sweden in 2008 and now has citizenship, has a combined total of 280,000 subscribers on YouTube.

As we reported earlier this year, another rapper in France released a track in which he sings, “I fuck France, I burn France,” as he is portrayed strangling a white woman meant to symbolically represent France.

Sweden is so much better for his presence. Before his diverse presence music artists in Sweden would never think of calling for killing white people and proclaiming black racial supremacy.

Playing as Geralt you can actually show no sympathy or even be hostile to nearly all characters, including those that are supposed to be seen as victims. There is even a mini-quest where you are supposed to side with the “racist” who hates dwarves.
It’s also a 99,9% white game with only a few non-whites added (plausibly) in the sequel DLCs.
Considering it’s a Polish game, made by “progressive” Poles, their main target was clearly the Catholic Church.

    • Replies: @A-Bax
I had the exact same thought while playing Witcher 3. Everyone is white (except a few Arab-Persian looking dudes in one of the expansion packs). Geralt can be kind of an asshole, or at least, the game lets you play as a prick. (He is sort of a mercenary after all).

It was in stark contrast to the game I played right before it, which was Mass Effect Andromeda. That game was your standard United Colors of Benneton deal in terms of the cast of characters. And it went out of its way to have ugly-looking female characters.

Witcher 3 by contrast had two smokeshow female love interests, that you had to choose between. Along the way there were various attractive females that Geralt could court for one-night stands. Even the run-of-the-mill female characters were often quite fetching.

Also, it was refreshing that there were no female warriors (powerful women were either sorceresses or rich ladies). There were no female bandit chiefs or what have you.

And...you couldn't play as a chick (like in so many games that let you create your own lead). You played as Geralt. And there were no gay love-interest options for Geralt.

It is a thoroughly un-pozzed game. (On top of being pretty much the best RPG since Skyrim.) I hope the upcoming Netflix Witcher adaptation doesn't screw that up.

  75. In a right wing video game you kill alien invaders.

In a left wing video game you kill millions of your own citizens in pursuit of an egalitarian utopia.

  76. There is something genuinely hilarious when someone writes about a subject they know nothing about. Rattling off all those games, knowing nothing about their game play, and missing: GTO (that is Grand Theft Auto for you non-gamers) the one game that might actually support his point, MOO (that is Master of Orion to you non-gamers) the original 4X game, and model for all others, and the Gold Box D&D ( please tell me I don’t have to explain that one) the model for all subsequent role playing games, notably Eldar Scrolls. And any one who has played Morrowind/Oblivion/Skyrim knows how full of sh!t this guy is – for crying out loud, Skyrim has a gay marriage option.

BUT, I have to say that the whole world of video games is completely lost on me. I look at reddit now and then and half the cultural references are to video games and their memes and I have no idea what they are talking about. When people mention current pop songs and pop artists I might have some idea about who they are talking about, but when it comes to video games more recent than Tetris, I mostly draw a blank – I think I could name two or three – the one where you steal cars and the one where the birds shoot at pigs (or is it vice versa?), but that’s about it. Even if I have heard the name, I have never played the game and have no idea how it goes.

I guess that as you get older there is always some part of current culture and technology that you can’t keep up with ( don’t WANT to keep up with) and for me it is video games.

Very funny headline. And the Guardian does have a point.

    • Replies: @Anonymous
That's a point which is often overlooked. A lot of the leftist rage against videogames isn't so much against games but against gaming forums.

Some of the best political discussions I've seen online have taken place in forums that ostensibly have nothing to do with politics. Official 'far right' forums (including this place) are of course closely monitored, but they are few in number. What really worries the left are countless 'wildcat' forums started by individual kids, or groups of schoolfriends, which are totally unmoderated and uncontrolled and (most worryingly) often completely unknown to the thought police. These forums may start out game-oriented, but since the membership consists of young males they soon become political.

Leftists who still obsess about Stormfront and similar websites are really behind the times. The action has moved elsewhere, with gaming forums at the center of it. What the left would really like to do is corral all gamers on the 'official' forums run by the big gaming companies, where discussions are easily policed and badthinkers easily identified and silenced.

    https://youtu.be/-istquWjZ8M

I don’t think the term “god emperor” originated in Warhammer 40,000. I don’t think the term was originated by Frank Herbert, who wrote God Emperor of Dune, published in 1981. I’ll bet you could go back to at least the 19th century, in works about the late Roman empire.

  85. @Kronos

I never imagined FarmVille being parallel to National Socialism initiatives to return to rural lifestyles.

Farmville presupposes a more agrarian, Jeffersonian vision for America had triumphed. Thus within the context of Sally Hemmings, anyone playing it may as well be Brock Turner.

consumers of these titles are disproportionately white

Actually they're disproportionately non-white. Like with films, Hispanics are the top consumers

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Race_and_video_games#Demographics_of_video_game_players

Actually they’re disproportionately non-white. Like with films, Hispanics are the top consumers

From that wikipedia page: “There are mixed results on the demographics of people who play video games. While one study mentions that African American and Hispanic children make up the majority of video game players,[2] a study by Pew Research Center finds that 73.9% of white children play video games compared to 26.1% of nonwhite children.[3]”

My son tells me game demographics depend on the game: Fortnite (free) has a lot of hispanics here in California, but, then again, it’s popular with everyone; Overwatch ($40) and Red Dead Redemption ($50) are pretty white; League of Legends and DOTA tend to be Asian. The more competitive the game the more Asian. Demographics spread when you include cell phone and tablet games in the definition of gaming. When you narrow to console and pc games I think you’re looking at primarily asian and white males, which is reinforced when you look at the makeup of e-sport clubs/tournaments in schools. Games, gaming laptops/PCs, not to mention DLC (downloadable content) are pricey. Lots of gaming stats here, but suspiciously devoid of racial information: https://www.wepc.com/news/video-game-statistics/#pc-gaming

When my sons were toddler/preschooler age I bought them a Lego Duplo castle set, complete with castle, knights, swords, mace, catapult, and a princess. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discoid_lupus_erythematosus

Discoid lupus erythematosus is the most common type of chronic cutaneous lupus (CCLE), an autoimmune skin condition on the lupus erythematosus spectrum of illnesses.[1][2] It presents with red, inflamed, coin-shaped patches of skin with a scaling and crusty appearance, most often on the scalp, cheeks, and ears. Hair loss may occur if the lesions are on the scalp.[3] The lesions can then develop severe scarring, and the centre areas may appear lighter in color with a rim darker than the normal skin.[3] These lesions can last for years without treatment.[4]

Of note, patients with systemic lupus erythematous develop discoid lupus lesions with some frequency.[4] However, patients who present initially with discoid lupus infrequently develop systemic lupus.[3] Discoid lupus can be divided into localized, generalized, and childhood discoid lupus.[3]

There is a sense in which their endless deconstructions are all true. Reality really is hierarchical, patriarchal, sexist, racist, cis-normed, and militant. “Actually they’re disproportionately non-white. Like with films, Hispanics are the top consumers”

From your link: “a study by Pew Research Center finds that 73.9% of white children play video games compared to 26.1% of nonwhite children”. That’s reasonable considering the prohibitive cost of many video games these days (10 – 12x a movie ticket); the industry is embracing the free-to-play model and microtransactions as a means of increasing poor minority milking efforts because they disproportionately don’t buy full-priced games. Depending on the property in question, whites will either be the plurality or the majority of consumers, as with films. Example: when DVD sales were counted, the top demographic for “Crazy Rich Asians” was white females; Asian females came in a close second (first at the US box office by a razor thin margin); Hispanics probably third. For many video games, excepting sports, the top demographic for select genres is white male, especially if one counts revenues instead of sales; this is probably more pronounced in RPGs than in FPSs. That’s not surprising considering whites are also far more numerous in the population than either blacks or Hispanics. Whites also have far more disposable income than either demographic by a large margin. Example: the accompanying toy market for films is overwhelmingly white male; Star Trek toy sales regularly netted $10 – 30 million annually before Discovery.

Also, none of those demographics are overwhelmingly trans or homosexual, so making all the female characters ugly isn’t going to get you any customers, even among gay men who find the concept bizarre (it’s usually implemented by either your stereotypical “male ally” who is, in theory, heterosexual or by out-of-touch female management within a studio). That’s why the last Dragon Age crumbled, story and game-play issues aside: fringe politics don’t appeal to normies.

But y0ur point about Hispanics being “disproportionately represented” (but not the majority) in some IPs is well taken. That demographic is probably why your movies and video games are of such low, and declining, quality these days, as rude as that might be to say. Hispanics were maybe 12% of the population when the Phantom Menace came out but 20 – 25 % of ticket sales at the box office. The United States has a large and growing population of people with lower tastes who are more easily satisfied with expensive special effects. Thus, movies don’t make much narrative sense any more and are filled with a plethora of out-of-place cartoon CGI and big explosions; check out the latest Terminator embarrassment and compare it with the more realistic SFX of T2. They’ll see any trash that comes out as long as it has the right marketing, and the movie industry knows it … so, they keep making trash. Thus, I think there will be an opening for a major Asian competitor in the future. How long will 1 billion plus 100 IQ Han Chinese sit through trash dictated to them by 90 IQ American Hispanics? Probably only until they get tired of SFX. Many current Chinese grew up more rural and poorer (or had parents who did), so they are dazzled by it. As China develops, that will change and y0u may find their tastes start to resemble something close to America in the 80s – 90s golden age of action and sci-fi movies.

You can't oversell what is basically another form of entertainment as being the beginning of a new era unlike any that existed before. That’s the whole point – video games in which you shoot the “other” are just sublimated violence. You know you can’t (and in real life would never even want to) shoot the annoying drug addicts and homeless people (“zombies”) who are camped out under the overpass or the illegal aliens (“space aliens”) who litter the park and play too loud music at their barbecues – you would never so much as touch a single one of them unless you were being attacked. But you can shoot “zombies” and “space aliens” and the like on screen as much as you want – they are safe targets for your aggression. By the dozen, by the hundreds – you can get it all out of your system. There is nothing wrong with that. Even my dog knows the difference between play and reality.

It’s worth a skim-read if only because of the un-self-aware, anthropologically detailed description of the bubble they live in.

It meanders through private and public schools, competitive admissions, mysterious “gaps” between certain student groups, struggle session meetings to encourage boycotts of standardized tests, elementary school kids breaking down in tears over the 2016 election results, New York’s new school commissioner, unisex restrooms, and much more, as seen through the unreliable narrator eyes of a white, half-Jewish New York elite.

Ah, the old Gateway Drug argument.

They did surveys of people in prison for drugs and asked them if they started smoking marijuana before they started stealing cars for meth money. Turns out 95% of them did. So it was determined that weed was a gateway drug that starts off innocuous but ends up with you stealing cars for meth money.

One thing they didn't study though was an even more insidious threat, corn flakes. 99% of those people started off eating corn flakes even before they smoked the weed.

Don't believe me, go to a prison and do an informal poll. 99.5% of all bank robbers started off as kids using harsh language before they started robbing banks, so harsh language is a gateway that invariably leads to bank robbery.

But then, what percentage of shooters spent time leaving comments on the internet? Perhaps that's why they snapped.

As for technical training, video games as preparation for real violence is like watching reality TV house flippers as training for starting a real estate investment business.

This is cheap lazy witchfinding. They didn't play "those games," they didn't play them all day and all night, they didn't kill anyone as a function of playing those games. There are people, thousands of people, who play those games far more than any known shooter, and yet are mysteriously immune to the terrible magic video games. There are people who actually play games like this for a living, compete in tournaments like an athlete and get paid for it, and they have not turned into shooters. The video games cause nothing.
Breivik talked about using certain video as training (which is laughable), thus he went to the terrible magic games after an out of control ruling class and a rigid ideology had already made up his mind. The games cause nothing (in fact, they cause the specific nothing from that pot commercial).

Perhaps it could be said that the giant phenomenon that is today's video game world, in which neither you nor I are immersed, is part of an "immersion" that is taking place. You know, that science fiction idea of humans becoming part of the machine world. Millions of people are now immersed in the virtual reality of video games.

Our mating with smartphones is out in the open, so we can see everyone going around with their eyes glued to six-inch screens. Video game - human symbiosis is hidden away in gamers' places of domicile primarily, like sex, so we don't see it and you and I have no idea how many people are schtupping with their computers.

It may be another weird stage in evolution -- though it is hard to see how proclivity and aptitude for it would be passed on, since those so immersed would seem least likely to have the opportunity to.

And then there is online porn and virtual sex...

Maybe, but humans remain humans. A lot of people thought that Teevee or the movies or something would destroy civilization as we know it – people would become addicted and just spend all their time glued to the screen and that didn’t happen either. You can’t oversell what is basically another form of entertainment as being the beginning of a new era unlike any that existed before. If kids nowadays spend 6 hrs/day playing video games instead of 6/yrs day watching Hogan’s Heroes or Gilligan’s Island or reading trashy dime novels or comic books like their great grandparents, I’m not sure that’s any better or worse.

Nothing is too small to escape the gaze of the Revolution.

As for the girl's "mixed race" I have no idea what's in the mix and it seems to be totally irrelevant to the swimsuit question anyway. But I will observe that race mixing is like the joke where Marilyn Monroe says to Einstein that they should have a kid together who will combine her beauty with his brains and Einstein replies that the opposite might occur. When all the cards fall into place, women of mixed race can be extraordinarily beautiful, combining the best attributes of both races - the sharply defined features of the European with the femininity of the Asian, etc. But when the deck gets shuffled wrong, you end up with a human who looks like a badly done identikit drawing.

Unfortunately, I have to agree with this sentiment. Unlike the religious right in United States from 1980 to roughly 2008, I don’t see any mechanism stopping the left from marching through every aspect of social life and burning it down – media, games, movies, books, politics, etc. The religious right lost power as religious affiliation declined, but I don’t see something similar happening with the left. Demographics are increasingly in their favor, and they increasingly control all the levers of information distribution and the government. In the future, they can afford to get a lot more oppressive. Democrats will win all presidential elections after 2020. As a result, they control the federal law enforcement and regulatory bodies. Buy all of your controversial movies, games, and books now*. Gone With The Wind? Banned. Racist. The Witcher 3? Banned. Sexist male gazes everywhere. The Bell Curve? Kicked off Amazon. Hate facts. But hey, you can still get Stephen Jay Gould’s “The Mismeasure of Man” where you can dutifully read all about how Samuel Morton was an unscrupulous liar who manipulated his data unlike Dr. Gould, paragon of integrity.

I think this is going to spiral out of control. Buzzfeed is already trying to get UFC girls banned (Grid Girls are long gone in Formula One); the radical left is moving authoritarian notion that they have a right to tell other women what jobs they can have and men what they can look at. This movement will sweep through everything, burning down any hint of male sexuality, female fantasy, and tradition (and quality). There are numerous examples I could give of previous trends leading up to the present … but that’s too depressing. Just one example I can recall: under Obama, we had book authors sending their manuscripts to sensitivity committees to expurgate potentially controversial material before publication. This is going to get really bad post 2020. All those conservatives who worried about demographics back in the 1990s were completely correct. Bye bye USA.

*Aside: Has anyone bothered to look at controversial book sales recently in the wake of Amazon/ADL book bannings? Typically, you hear stories about gun sales going up before gun legislation or in the wake of mass shootings. Presumably, consumers think they are about to be banned or restricted. Do people think the same of books?

There is no evidence that video games cause violence. Indeed, studies have shown the opposite for many years. Adam Lanza did not become mentally ill because he played video games; he was already mentally ill to begin with and gravitated to them as a result. There is also no evidence he was inspired to commit a mass shooting by an innocuous video game. Also, the violent crime rate has been on a nearly three decade long decline as video games have concomitantly become far more prevalent in the culture. You can peg video games as responsible for nearly anything if someone played them, but that doesn’t make it right. You don’t really think Timothy McVeigh was inspired by Tetris do you? Domestic terrorism, violent crime, and civil unrest existed at far greater levels in the past and video games had nothing to do with any of that.

The Witcher 3 is pretty unPC by today's WOKE standards. Playing as Geralt you can actually show no sympathy or even be hostile to nearly all characters, including those that are supposed to be seen as victims. There is even a mini-quest where you are supposed to side with the "racist" who hates dwarves.
It's also a 99,9% white game with only a few non-whites added (plausibly) in the sequel DLCs.
Considering it's a Polish game, made by "progressive" Poles, their main target was clearly the Catholic Church.

And…you couldn’t play as a chick (like in so many games that let you create your own lead). You played as Geralt. And there were no gay love-interest options for Geralt.

It is a thoroughly un-pozzed game. (On top of being pretty much the best RPG since Skyrim.) I hope the upcoming Netflix Witcher adaptation doesn’t screw that up.

One thing that seems to be different about video games and human interaction with/via current technology is this: the level and speed of interactivity.

To put it more simply if cumbersomely: video gaming, and social media, and most forms of human activity with 21st century stuff is highly interactive, in real time and rapid -- while at the same time occurring in a virtual, not real "meat" world.

This is different from anything that came before. This moves lives into a virtual world that exists in the cloud, so-to-speak. It allows people to do things that seem real but are not. Like commenting here and in other places, people thus involved feel more free to do and say things they would not in person.

"In person." Think about that phrase. What does that mean anymore? Well, it still means in "meat world," where your meat is. But will it continue to mean that? More of our interactions and lives happen in electronic world.

More: We are on Mars right now. Have been for years. There is an American geologist named Curiosity roaming there now. There were until recently two American explorers, Spirit and Opportunity, roaming there. We see via the cameras, smell and taste through chemistry, feel the temperature by way of thermometers, and hear the wind through anemometers. We are on Mars because of virtual reality. We have been since Viking 1 landed on July 20, 1976, when Ray Bradbury said, "now we are the Martians."

Video games? Hah. I give you life on Mars, even more real.

This is not a judgement of good or bad for us, it is simply a description of how life has been progressing by way of us. Our concern may just be to make sure we don't lose things like our manhood and "humanity" (whatever that is) in the process. Right now, lots of video gamers seem at risk.

A new study by Texas Tech researchers examines the acquired capability for suicide.Video Games
Among individuals already thinking about suicide, those who play action video games may be significantly more capable of attempting it than those who play other video game categories, according to a new study from Texas Tech University.

Researchers in the Department of Psychological Sciences examined the relationship between video game play and the acquired capability for suicide, with the moderating effects of video game category and gender. The team published its findings in a recent issue of the peer-reviewed journal Cyberpsychology, Behavior and Social Networking.

Acquired capability is an increased fearlessness about death, not being as afraid to die, and also an increased pain tolerance – not being as sensitive to pain. Increased acquired capability allows individuals to overcome the fear and pain that would inhibit a suicide attempt.

Just as women’s politics comes down to nudging society in a direction where they’ll be more fuckable, everybody’s politics is aimed at nudging society in a direction where their abilities will put them on top. Civil nationalist bloggers for example aim for a time when being all droll and contemplative will be a much bigger thing that it is today.

Weak men and women hate violence because they can’t do it. What they can do is complain, snark, manipulate and outthink their bullies. So they convince themselves that their love for a “peaceful” and “safe” society is a very sophisticated piece of philosophy instead of a simple understanding of their limitations.

This is cheap lazy witchfinding. They didn’t play “those games,” they didn’t play them all day and all night, they didn’t kill anyone as a function of playing those games.

Welcome to the Current Year, when even a swimsuit wedgie and a dumb call by a HS ref touches upon racism and sexism and get rid of Trumpism. Nothing is immune from politics in a Revolutionary society - swimwear, video games, what you order for lunch. Ask any Chinese who went thru the Cultural Revolution - the personal is political.

For a real-life example, Alexa Ray Joel has her father’s looks and her mother’s musical talent.

The left-liberal-progressive critique starts from the premise that human nature doesn’t exist, that man can be molded to perfection–a perfection the left decides, i.e. all nurture, no nature. Reality itself is a limitation, a constraint that must and can be overcome–in order for true liberation to be realized.

To the people who don't know about him:
PewDiePie is a Swedish guy who made little English Language videos of himself judging video games and movies.
Between his "skill" at this, his prolific output, and (probably most importantly) his conscious or unconscious targeting of a receptive democraphic (more or less, his own generation), he has made millions of dollars and has long been the top personality on YouTube. His only competition for viewership was "T-Series," which is "the entire subcontinent of India trying to outdo one Swedish kid. And failing."
He is not a political guy at all but for possibly that very reason resents being told what to say. A lot of his humor in the past was extreme and offensive, like paying third worlders to hold up signs espousing extreme beliefs. This, and his refusal to be an SJW, attracted the usual racketeers. recently, PewDiePie made a huge donation to the ADL, which in its scientific precision was able to declare him Probably Not A Nazi.
Then he retracted his promised donation.

Keep in mind, many games (like RPGs) require reading lots of written material/ dialog for in-game quests. Some of that might discourage lower ability gamers.

I agree with both of you in this conversation.

On the one hand, video games belong to the same general category that includes a whole lot of other things like comic books, light fiction, hacky-sack, dog racing, cards and dominoes...the list goes on and on. People have always had their idle amusements. They are all mostly harmless and all occasionally harmful, but in any case they are part of the human tapestry and cannot be unwoven from it. Some video games rise to the level of real story depth and artistry. Franchises like Zelda, Metal Gear, Resident Evil, and Hitman (four of my personal favorites) have a lot of both going on in them.

On the other hand, I think the people who lamented the rise of television are in the process of being proven right in the long run. There is a certain threshold at which media saturation becomes detrimental, but this subject is to large to open up about at the moment.

One thing that seems to be different about video games and human interaction with/via current technology is this: the level and speed of interactivity.

To put it more simply if cumbersomely: video gaming, and social media, and most forms of human activity with 21st century stuff is highly interactive, in real time and rapid — while at the same time occurring in a virtual, not real “meat” world.

This is different from anything that came before. This moves lives into a virtual world that exists in the cloud, so-to-speak. It allows people to do things that seem real but are not. Like commenting here and in other places, people thus involved feel more free to do and say things they would not in person.

“In person.” Think about that phrase. What does that mean anymore? Well, it still means in “meat world,” where your meat is.

We have been since Viking 1 landed on July 20, 1976, when Ray Bradbury said, “now we are the Martians.”

Video games? Hah. I give you life on Mars, even more real.

This is not a judgement of good or bad for us, it is simply a description of how life has been progressing by way of us. Our concern may just be to make sure we don’t lose things like our manhood and “humanity” (whatever that is) in the process. Right now, lots of video gamers seem at risk.

There are people who actually play games like this for a living, compete in tournaments like an athlete and get paid for it, and they have not turned into shooters.

    Sometimes they do.

Does this have anything to do with Pewdiepie exposing the ADL as a protection racket?

Look into that Steve. They're absolutely livid.

Of course they’re absolutely livid. He’s an absolute madlad.

To the people who don’t know about him:
PewDiePie is a Swedish guy who made little English Language videos of himself judging video games and movies.
Between his “skill” at this, his prolific output, and (probably most importantly) his conscious or unconscious targeting of a receptive democraphic (more or less, his own generation), he has made millions of dollars and has long been the top personality on YouTube. His only competition for viewership was “T-Series,” which is “the entire subcontinent of India trying to outdo one Swedish kid. And failing.”
(You’d think they’d wait until they had the money in their hands.)

No kidding. FO4 was a joke in so many regards standing alone, but next to New Vegas it looks even worst.

Not a single character comes close to laying on a glove on the Burned Man, Arcade Gannon, Caesar, Cass, etc.

Caesar digresses into Hegelianism during one of his monologues, FFS. Can you imagine Bethesda writing something like that?

The writing even captured how you might expect a pedant turned tyrant might explain it to you. Amazing.

And the ending of the main game. FO4 was a zerg rush into a base. The dialogue with Lanius especially captured so many themes of the game, especially when you explain to him that the Legion isn't ready to conquer the West.

Nice comment. That’s a very good, succinct summation of the social climate.

Lanza talked about raping and murdering his mother in an internet comment. Poor analogy. If I watch an Asa Akira video (or the game) it does not raise my chances of getting her to have sex with me, but it might well trigger me into trying a type of high risk sexual behaviour, which happens to be skyrocketing among the young. https://www.marieclaire.com/sex-love/a5489/rise-in-anal-sex-statistics/

There are serious questions raised about that situation which are not allowed to be asked and the raising of them has been consistently censored. I regard the censorship as proof. If you babble about UFOs you will not be censored, if you advocate violence against white people or Republican politicians you will not be censored. The Sandy Hook discussion was targeted by an unprecedented lawfare effort by paid activists; no others are. Why?
But you are still pushing this nonsense, so someone should probably explain that if you had any power, if you were a cop and were pursuing magic video ganes for real, but could suffer ramifications for knocking on the wrong door, you wouldn't be pushing this.
It is a power fantasy to pretend that you have telepathy, that at the right moment you could spot some novelesque tell, and then save the world by violating people's rights based on nothing. This isn't real. It isn't what real investigators would depend on (they would definitely look at it). Millions of people have now played games in which you play an active shooter raiding a location. This sort of game has its own genre. The genre includes not only specifically the targeting of schools but also the re-creation of specific school shootings, notably Columbine. And out of all the people playing all those games you've got one guy who, playing the lie for argument's sake, would have caused trouble without any video games or without electricity.
Violent big talk on an anonymous forum by an angry teen in a fight with his parents is an even dumber thing to try to get past competant legal counsel. I honestly wish I could watch you try that in front of a real lawyer such as people like me aren't allowed to have.
There actually is stuff we could have done to detect potential problems, and it's objective, quantitative stuff. Most psychiatry is made up but schizophrenia can be objectively diagnosed by a blood test (and brain scans are a scam now but I totally accept that one day there will be Voight-Kampff setups as ubiquitous as metal detectors). That doesn't help where the diagnosis is ignored and it's no license to legally punish the mentally ill, and none of this matters when the people pushing gun control refuse to enforce existing law, refuse to respond to an emergency, try to stop other cops from responding, and then later attack them for having helped, all of which happened in Florida. The answer is not totalitarianism and mind-reading and spotting one comment.

Right. You may not be interested in politics, but politics is interested in you.

  180. History frequently records malevolent motives, but rarely venal ones.

The actual reason behind the referenced article is that the author is bad at videogames. This makes him feel bad, so he has to try to make gamers feel bad.

In leftoid: he was oppressed by the horrifically right-wing game designers, and it’s time to heroically rebel.

  181. @anon

The original arcade game Gauntlet (1985) had an optional female character which was good because it attracted girls to the game. The important word is ‘optional’ though. Taking away the male characters and forcing everybody to play as a woman is just bad business sense. You’re leaving money on the table.

    @Massimo Heitor
I'm surprised by how much pro-Trump sentiment I hear in several online game lobbies.

Very funny headline. And the Guardian does have a point.

That’s a point which is often overlooked. A lot of the leftist rage against videogames isn’t so much against games but against gaming forums.

Some of the best political discussions I’ve seen online have taken place in forums that ostensibly have nothing to do with politics. Official ‘far right’ forums (including this place) are of course closely monitored, but they are few in number. What really worries the left are countless ‘wildcat’ forums started by individual kids, or groups of schoolfriends, which are totally unmoderated and uncontrolled and (most worryingly) often completely unknown to the thought police. These forums may start out game-oriented, but since the membership consists of young males they soon become political.

Leftists who still obsess about Stormfront and similar websites are really behind the times. The action has moved elsewhere, with gaming forums at the center of it. What the left would really like to do is corral all gamers on the ‘official’ forums run by the big gaming companies, where discussions are easily policed and badthinkers easily identified and silenced.

Yes, he does. Unfortunately, it’s on the top of his head.
