In the prestige press, Saturday has seen much clucking with distaste over Ferguson police releasing more information to the public than was optimal for the national media’s Narrative Maintenance purposes.

From the New York Times:

Earlier Saturday, in a new sign of discord among the authorities over the handling of the investigation into Mr. Brown’s death, the Justice Department said that it had opposed the release of a video that the Ferguson Police Department said showed the teenager apparently involved in a robbery at a convenience store.

The Justice Department asked the Ferguson Police Department not to release the video because of concerns that “it would roil the community further,” a United States law enforcement official said on Saturday. The Ferguson Police Department released the video on Friday and the Justice Department official said it “occurred over the objection of federal authorities.” The official said that a copy of the video had been in possession of federal investigators, as well, “and there were never any plans by the federal investigators to release that copy.”

In other words, Eric Holder’s department had this key evidence and was covering it up. Moreover, the Department of Justice declared itself to be in a de facto alliance with the looters in the street to keep non-federal agencies from releasing their copies. The Attorney General’s people wanted to keep this Narrative-undermining video hidden from the public and used the threat of mob violence to try to uphold its political advantage.

That’s really, really immoral.

The dispute showed further divisions among the authorities in the handling of the case. The surveillance video appeared to show Mr. Brown, 18, stealing a box of cigarillos. Shortly after the release of the video, Captain Johnson expressed his displeasure, saying he had not been told that the police planned to release it.

Mr. Brown’s family and many protesters accused the police of trying to harm the teenager’s reputation and to divert attention from the officer who killed him.

How can the New York Times and the Obama Administration do their job of telling you what to think about this Defining Event of our Times when the local cops are free to release a security camera video on the Internet for the whole world to view? It’s just not fair: the Obama / Media Industrial Complex has all these highly expensive methods and minions for the engineering of human souls; yet a few wreckers at the local police force can undermine all that power and prestige just by posting evidence on Youtube.

  1. Eric Holder might have to start another civil-rights investigation. He said that a decision of whether to charge George Zimmerman with a civil-rights crime might come soon, back in March. Holder is so busy, busy busy.

Josie claimed to be a family friend of Darren Wilson and said on a radio show that Wilson received a “call-in” with the description of Michael Brown when he found Brown with the cigar box. This seems to contradict the police chief and the media. There was no mention of Howard Stern at the end of the call.

Presumably we have a federal police force to investigate actual or incipient treason, espionage, insurrection, counterfeiting, racketeering, multi-state fraud schemes, multi-state theft and fencing, interstate kidnapping, interstate and international trade in contraband, smuggling, human trafficking, federal tax evasion, larceny or vandalism re federal property, assaults on federal officials, corruption of federal officials, offenses in the armed services, offenses in coastal waters, offenses in the territories, offenses on Indian reservations, piracy on the high seas, assaults on candidates for public office, vote fraud, and to guard the frigging border and coastline.

It doesn’t make sense to me why the Ferguson Police didn’t release this sooner. Were they that intimidated by blacks?

It might ratchet things up for a day or two because it makes the “righteous” black protesters lose face for jumping the gun protesting about about the ‘execution of a choir boy’. And white libs and moderates might throw a verbal fuss for a day or two more too, but it’s going to make it a whole lot harder to maintain the righteous anger momentum much longer with this video released.

Mike Brown assassinated his own character when he robbed that store and smiled up at the surveillance camera when he walked by. He assassinated his own character when he wrote vulgar rap lyrics and posted pics of himself online in gang stance. He was obviously working very hard to project a specific image of himself to the public and online, and it turns out that image is going to hurt Benjamin Crump’s and Al Sharpton’s efforts to deify him. The public image that he intentionally created for himself so that he would be feared on the streets of Ferguson will now work to the advantage of the guy who shot him. So what? If that’s the real Mike, then that’s the real Mike.

And if the media is going to try this case in the court of public opinion prior to the real trial (and it’s likely there will be a trial, IMO) then why shouldn’t the opposing side present their case? Brown’s mental state just prior to the shooting is pertinent. Contrary to what most poor blacks think, there is no law that says blacks can only be portrayed in the most positive light. But it seems that most poor black people think of themselves like people who are confined to wheelchairs or who are missing limbs or who are mentally retarded. It’s as if their race is something akin to a birth defect that everyone else is supposed to feel sorry about.

I notice that Obama is now letting someone else do the dirty work in these situations. No talking about how Mike Brown could be his son. Just mostly tip toeing and letting the DOJ pursue it’s nasty agenda.

A couple of observations. First, the hacker group anonymous hacked into Ferguson’s computer system and released audio of the police dispatch calls. I wonder if this group had access to the surveillance video too, but refused to release it.

Second, though it was the feds who said they wanted to prevent tempers flaring over this video, it appears the media agrees with them. So why did the same media decide to run photos of Abu Ghraib every day for a month when the Pentagon told them it would inflame passions and put US service members at risk? I don’t seem to recall the press wanting to suppress those photos.

Unless you win a genetic lottery and have the potential to become a pro athlete, there aren't a lot of avenues for economic advancement if you have an 85 IQ. With no successful friends or relations, you have no social capital to compensate for your lack of human capital. Since your single mother probably has little-to-no savings or home equity, you have little financial capital either. You won't starve, thanks to government assistance, but you certainly don't have it made.

He said that a decision of whether to charge George Zimmerman with a civil-rights crime might come soon, back in March.

Zimmerman might have caught a break. If Brown hadn’t stepped up and got shot down, giving Holder and the WH a more immediate election-year Hate Scare, perhaps they might’ve come around for old Georgie. But do they really want to revisit that travesty? Sailer would say yes, as they seem determined to recreate it, in seasonal tune with the election cycle, with each new hoax.

But isn’t it appalling–and I wonder if they ask this themselves–how little real material the political demagogues have to work with? If the world was remotely as they’ve imagined it for us on tv and film, you would figure that at least once in a blue moon, yes, some respectable, innocent black kid would run afoul of abusive cops/authority figures.

But all they have to work with is the marginal (Trayvon) and the monstrous (Mike Brown). The guy strong-arms his local liquor store and decides to disrupt traffic by walking down the middle of the street on his way home. And the president himself is “heartbroken”. For all that lost potential I guess (one can just imagine what sort of potential Mr Brown held). From here it looks like Mike Brown lived like a king: taking what he wanted from and commanding the streets before cowering subjects, eulogized by a US President. Calls for his assassin’s head redound from the highest points.

And what does Holder think is going to anger people so much about the video? That they’re being proven wrong? That the PD (and implicitly whites) dare defend themselves?

It’s hard to believe that the police officer didn’t know that Brown was a suspect in the robbery a few moments beforehand. Wouldn’t all the police radios have received the same broadcasts in a relatively small area like that? Also, his description would have been unmistakable to anyone encountering the suspect.
The perp casually robbed and manhandled the victim as though it were just a household chore then brazenly walked in the street with an apparent sense of impunity. High on drugs or attempting to establish a reputation as a bold and nervy criminal to be feared and respected within the thug pecking order? Of course, it now looks like he overreached and his budding criminal career has been cut short. Good thing too; no telling how many people he would have gone on to harm.

And what about Brown? The black community should be celebrating his demise. He was a monster thug and typical black sociopath that would have eventually murdered other blacks for some impulsive reason the way many black on black murders occur. If he just stayed out of trouble, he would have had it made. Free medical for life, free food, free housing. He could have done all the boozing, drugs and ho’s he wanted and no one would have cared.

"Yeah, affirmative action really helps the average black male. Come on"

anon you truly believe Black males have it harder the White middle class in America ? You are a typical Libertarian who probably believes ending the war on drugs means Blacks will become a pleasant race to live in close proximity to.

Yes, of course, black males have it harder than the white middle class. The white middle class has an average IQ of 100. The average black male has an IQ in the mid-eighties. If you think affirmative action and welfare make up for that, you’re nuts.

I’d say you’re an idiot for making unfounded assumptions about what I believe, but I’ll leave the name calling to you.

No mention of the immigration status of the store staff, but who cares, it's so much fun to whinge about Blacks. But of course the immigration status is you know like irrelevant. So sorry for stinking up the joint.

What does immigration status have to do with it? Michael Brown was fed up with open borders so he went to beat up the store clerk?

  43. You know George if you were really curious I’m sure you could find out the immigration status of the staff at the store. I still don’t understand how that would justify trying to burn it to the ground, but you have your ethics and I have mine.

AWESome, frankly this site has way to many contributors like Paul Roberts and Giraldi who are all indignation all the time so Steve’s bemusement might even be a good thing. Also keep in mind who his writing heroes are: Tom Wolfe and Evelyn Waugh. Unless it’s Bauhaus architecture or de Kooning paintings (of all things) Wolfe tone is always bemused never indignant. I think Wolfe used up every ounce of indignation he had denouncing color field painting in The Painted Word.

He said that a decision of whether to charge George Zimmerman with a civil-rights crime might come soon, back in March.

Zimmerman might have caught a break. If Brown hadn't stepped up and got shot down, giving Holder and the WH a more immediate election-year Hate Scare, perhaps they might've come around for old Georgie. But do they really want to revisit that travesty? Sailer would say yes, as they seem determined to recreate it, in seasonal tune with the election cycle, with each new hoax.

But isn't it appalling--and I wonder if they ask this themselves--how little real material the political demagogues have to work with? If the world was remotely as they've imagined it for us on tv and film, you would figure that at least once in a blue moon, yes, some respectable, innocent black kid would run afoul of abusive cops/authority figures.

But all they have to work with is the marginal (Trayvon) and the monstrous (Mike Brown). The guy strong-arms his local liquor store and decides to disrupt traffic by walking down the middle of the street on his way home. And the president himself is "heartbroken". For all that lost potential I guess (one can just imagine what sort of potential Mr Brown held). From here it looks like Mike Brown lived like a king: taking what he wanted from and commanding the streets before cowering subjects, eulogized by a US President. Calls for his assassin's head redound from the highest points.

And what does Holder think is going to anger people so much about the video? That they're being proven wrong? That the PD (and implicitly whites) dare defend themselves?

This thuggish behavior captured on video does not imply anything about Brown’s fatal confrontation with the police. No matter what his crime, his getting shot in cold blood needs to be investigated. Of course this ‘teenager’s’ friends do his cause no favors by wantonly looting innocent people’s businesses and indulging in arson.

I don't want to use my own money or anybody else's to support them. It's a liberal way of thinking you're espousing--recognizing the existence of a disadvantage on the part of a group of people does not mean there needs to be remedial action to fix it. A conservative can accept that whites have a huge advantage in American society without seeking to give blacks money, advantages, power, et cetera to make up for that advantage.

But generally, society is better without slaves or masters, I'd say. America would probably be better off if whites didn't import slaves to do the dirty work.

If you're a 120+ IQ black guy, the world is your oyster, but what % of Ferguson black men does that describe?

Thinking like a White guy. Free stuff, gangsta life, father ten plus kids with eight different women, govtpicks up living expenses, jail no big deal. A rep and intimidation for successfully killing someone with little comeback.

The 85 iq Black guy lives as he pleases. He takes what he wants. He is akin to a Meiji era samurai without obligations of honor. Money he cares nothing about. The govt will always provide, and nicely. Its all about violence, status, and power.

Most likely theory of what happened. Brown with adrenaline rushing after DOMINATING a much smaller man and taking what he wanted bloced traffuc like only a six four, three hundred pound Black in the middle of the road can. When a smaller, White cop ordered him to the sidewalk and made a stop when Brwn did not comply, during the stop the cop noted the stolen cigars in Browns hand and attempted to arrest him. High off his previous domination Brown fought to take the cops gun, and got shot.

The one witness talking so far is Browns accomplice facing prior felony counts and the robbery charge. Not exactly reliable. My guess is Brown was shot in the police car during the fight for the gun.

In short, Big Black thug acts thug until he’s shot. If not a cop, a rival packing is often the case.

Unlikely. Apparently only one shell casing was found in the car.

I think they had a struggle in the car, one shot fired as they fight over the gun. At that point this isn’t a strong arm robbery or jaywalking; trying to disarm an officer is a Big Deal, and the cop will do everything he can to get this collar. They body, from press reports, was 35 ft away from the car. So after the struggle the cop leaves the car and closes distance, weapon drawn. (Brown had just tried to shoot him with the cops own weapons, which makes cops nervous.) They exchange a few words and Brown rushes the officer. Shots fired, Brown goes down.

Forensics will tell if Brown was shot in the front or back. The usual suspects have been claiming the back. Shot in the front will make the witness (who had just helped Brown rob the store) a liar and lend credence to the account of the cop. Casings away from the car may also support the cop’s story.

Yeah, could you go stink up some other joint?

Your whinge is not really relevant to the discussion; we can complain about blacks without giving illegals a free pass, you know.

Besides, they were probably legal. Legal immigration is wide open to certain groups, and with chain migration of family members, it is very easy for sub-continentals and others to staff their stores with family members, legally imported. Moreover, as “minorities” they get access to all kinds of federal business loans and other help that is not available to a white business owner. You think it is an accident that legal non-white immigrants are monopolizing certain businesses?
