Streeterville

From the Chicago Tribune:

Chicago’s lifespan gap: Streeterville residents live to 90. Englewood residents die at 60. Study finds it’s the largest divide in the U.S.

Lisa Schencker Contact Reporter

In the gleaming Streeterville neighborhood, Chicagoans live to be 90 years old, on average.

But just about 9 miles south, in Englewood, the average life expectancy plummets to about 60 years, according to a new NYU School of Medicine analysis.

The 30-year gap between the neighborhoods is the largest in the country, according to the NYU researchers, who examined life expectancies in neighborhoods in the 500 biggest U.S. cities based on data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from 2010 to 2015.

Neighborhoods with higher life expectancies tend to have access to good health care, high educational attainment and higher income, among other things,

Such as roving MAGA lynch mobs out looking to murder gay black TV stars during polar vortexes.

said Dr. Marc Gourevitch, chair of the Department of Population Health at New York University medical school and chief architect of the City Health Dashboard, a public database through which researchers did their analysis.

“There’s a saying that your ZIP code has as much to do with health as your genetic code, and I think it’s data like this that really shine a light on a statement like that and bring it to life,” Gourevitch said.

The researchers also found that cities with bigger life expectancy gaps tended to have greater racial segregation. Chicago was more segregated than most of the other cities they analyzed.

Englewood

Have you noticed how “segregation” has become a statistical euphemism for “black”?

Apparently, a lot of people are fooled by this rather clumsy sleight-of-hand.

“Often where there are greater concentrations in large cities of Latino or African American populations there can be neighborhoods, at times, where (there has been) more disinvestment in basic social services like education, housing, clean water, safe streets,” Gourevitch said.

Also, due to disinvestment in segregated neighborhoods, there are more people shooting each other. Or maybe … the shooting causes the disinvestment?

No! That’s unthinkable. Stop thinking that!

In Englewood, neighborhood parks aren’t family friendly, fresh vegetables aren’t as readily available and gyms are few and far between, she said. Meanwhile liquor, cigarettes and drugs are readily available.

Also, in Englewood, residents shoot each other a lot.

As Yogi Berra might have said, Englewood got so unpopular that nobody lives there anymore:

Historical population
Census Pop.
1930 89,063
1940 92,849 4.3%
1950 94,134 1.4%
1960 97,595 3.7%
1970 89,659 −8.1%
1980 59,075 −34.1%
1990 48,434 −18.0%
2000 40,222 −17.0%
2010 30,654 −23.8%
Est. 2015 26,121 −14.8%

To paraphrase Greta Garbo in Ninotchka on the impact of the Soviet Purge Trials, each Census finds fewer but worser Englewoodians.

How do you calculate “life expectancy” for an area where presumably people move in and out? Is it even a useful concept? Apart from anything else, Life Expectancy is a prediction about the future not a fact about the recent past.

Would something like average age at death be more useful?

  2. The exercise involved in being in and among the roving lynch mobs must be the etiological explanation for the reduced mortality rate.

Of course if Chicago were not somwhat segregated the life expectancy for the total of Chicago would be around 67 years.

There are a lot of big assumptions that have to be made when doing Social SCIENCE, Dearieme, involving a few concepts arrived at via rectal extraction. One such assumption keeps this model really simple: Let’s assume there exist just these 2 neighborhoods, and you either live in one or the other, and you can’t move out or in, OK? Now, just extrapolationg extemper-anus-ly on this, we come to our biggest and most shocking find:

People in Streeterville live much longer because they don’t shop, especially at night, in Englewood. People in Englewood live shorter lives because they shop in Englewood, sometimes even at night, because it’s closer than Streeterville.

  7. I will say, in all fairness, that those MAGA gangs will not mess with you if you wear your own MAGA hat (it better be red) and flash the “OK” gang sign to them. See, the black folks don’t know this, and that’s why they get hurt …

  8. “There’s a saying that your ZIP code has as much to do with health as your genetic code

Yes, yes, yes. Another variation on the Magic Dirt Theory. It’s nothing to do with the choices people make or the habits they form.

It’s all about the “disinvestment” which is another way of saying we need more and better reparations in the form of taking things from white people and giving them to black people.

Like we’ve been doing for several decades now. It’s going so swimmingly.

Lately we’re going one better and including immigrants on the reparations receiving list. Even if they just got here.

Oh well. At least as the population figures Steve posted show, we’re doing a good job of moving people out of the Tragic Dirt Zones. It should be obvious to everyone by now that all we need to do to fix everything is just move all the ‘bad’ people into the ‘best’ neighborhoods.

I hardly need add that this is exactly what we’re now doing on a global scale with “migration”.

  9. “Also, in Englewood, residents shoot each other a lot.”

More accurately: “In Englewood, black residents try to murder each other a lot over petty drug and turf wars.”

Whites own lots of guns, even in Chicago. They aren’t out shooting at each other every time the temperature gets above 65 degrees.

  10. “There’s a saying that your ZIP code has as much to do with health as your genetic code, and I think it’s data like this that really shine a light on a statement like that and bring it to life,” Gourevitch said.

And this random control trial where two groups of identical people were placed in different neighborhoods really proves it!

Chicago is experiencing “black flight” as blacks flee the devastation wrought by Democrat control. They leave for all the right reasons, looking for jobs, safer neighborhoods and better schools. Supposedly some blacks are reverse migrating back to the South to find the extended families they left behind in the early twentieth century.

“A spokeswoman for Mayor Rahm Emanuel said his administration is taking steps to keep African-Americans in the city. “Mayor Emanuel has led several major initiatives to invest in our youth, support local businesses and create jobs in neighborhoods across the city,” Lauren Markowitz said in a statement. She pointed to expanded mentoring and jobs for African-American youth and investments in businesses and shopping corridors on the predominantly black South and West sides.”

But some academics blame city officials for making it harder for poor African-Americans, in particular, to live in Chicago: They closed neighborhood schools and mental health clinics; failed to rebuild public housing, dispersing thousands of poor black families across the region, and inadequately responded to gun violence, unemployment and foreclosures in black communities.”

    https://www.chicagoreporter.com/black-cps-student-migration/

Who is left behind? The lowest motivation, lowest IQ, least interested in a better life for their families gang bangers. Didn’t something like this happen to Baltimore, resulting in a situation where 30% of black residents have an IQ below 70, the legal limit for being prosecuted for murder?

  21. Travis says:

In America today the poor are more likely to be overweight or obese than the rich. One reason for the high mortality among Blacks, 20% of Blacks are obese compared to 16% of whites.

It has become an article of faith among some policy makers and advocate that poor urban neighborhoods are food deserts, bereft of fresh fruits and vegetables. But two new studies have found something unexpected. Such neighborhoods not only have more fast food restaurants and convenience stores than more affluent ones, but more grocery stores, supermarkets and full-service restaurants, too. And there is no relationship between the type of food being sold in a neighborhood and obesity among its children and adolescents. Within a couple of miles of almost any urban neighborhood, “you can get basically any type of food,” said Roland Sturm of the RAND Corporation, lead author of one of the studies. “Maybe we should call it a food swamp rather than a desert,” he said.

Well Dearie I think you answered your own questions. What would your life expectancy be in the ghetto as a white person, not that blacks are racist or anything? Blacks arent dying because of “health” issues. They are dying from skreets gone wrong or shots rang out and midnight basketball. Attending funerals is also bad for your health is Inglewood. Drawing a weapon on an officer of the law will not guarantee you a long life either. There is nothing the black person is responsible for except exceptionally good raw data on crime and dysfunction.
I live 16 miles from any medical facilty as do thousands of others that live in the country who farm. They have very high life spans. The Mennonites who share the same county and do not prescribe to hospitals and doctors so much, also live long lives.
Interesting enough the Mennonites only go to school till grade 8 but they own huge swathes of land and have large livestock herds. They own guns .. and lots of them.. because they hunt. They are not filling our prisons!!! Oh … just a tidbit … there are no basketball nets at any Mennonite school playground. They play baseball.
The path to a good long life is not just eating well and staying reasonably fit, it is the distance one puts between themselves and any black population. Pattern recognition could save your life!! The price to be paid for ignorance and virtue signalling could cost ones life.
    They are not like us.

As I recall, actuary tables show that even when correcting for income, education, zipcodes, etc. blacks simply have a shorter lifespans than other races, as though their DNA is simply not programmed to live as long as other races (perhaps unsurprising in r-selected pop vs. K-sepected pop). So any comparison of blacks vs. _____ is going to show an apparent black disadvantage, which the media will then use as a pity cudgel to hack the white altruism module.

This also pollutes other statistics, such as the one we kept hearing a decade ago when Dems wanted to (further) wreck US healthcare: “despite the highest per capita healthcare spending, the US has the lowest life expectancy of any advanced country”. Well, if you correct for race, that deficit goes away. So of course, the media never corrected for race.

Stores not selling vegetables and other healthy foods in poor neighborhoods is due to lack of demand by the buyers rather than sellers not being willing to sell them. Here in Indianapolis a group received a government grant to open a smaller version of a Whole Foods type of market in a poor area. It eventually had to go out of business because it couldn’t even make enough to pay its employees. People from outside the area wouldn’t travel into a dangerous part of town to shop. Poor people who lived nearby weren’t willing to pay extra to buy things like organic vegetables, both because of the extra cost and because of a lack of interest in eating healthier foods. You would have to switch to junk food to get customers but then that defeats the whole purpose in opening the store in the first place. I was also told by someone who worked there that they had a problem with dead bodies from drug overdoses in their parking lot. People buying drugs instead of healthy food and then dying in the parking lot of the health food store symbolizes the problems that exist in such neighborhoods.

If my experience in Scotland is anything to go by, disadvantaged neighbourhoods accrue massive social investment in the form of social workers, parole officers, police-community liaisons, youth clubs, housing teams, and job centres. This is on top of all the things people get as a matter of course, like doctors, teachers, and bin men. The disadvantaged already get money hosed at them, and it is hard to see what difference more money will make. Unless I be rayciss and point out that a mainly white neighbourhood is actually fixable. Craigmillar in Edinburgh used to be a dump in which pizza delivery men got beaten up and robbed for food. A friend of mine saw someone get their motorcycle jacked out from under them at traffic lights. Now it is a working-poor-but-reasonable area thanks to a combination of job availability, transport links, and replacement of crappy 60s housing stock. But I must observe that even criminal lowlife Scots aren’t stupid, just lazy and disrespectful. Many of them are quite well spoken. You can work with that.

The nutrients they do have are also found in the other foods, including processed food these days, and they’re also combined with anti-nutrients that plants use as a defense mechanism to inhibit nutrient absorption by their consumers.

What do they expect will help these urban poor who make bad health decisions? My guess is ciphoning money into “not for profits” which will claim to start urban gardening projects where the poor can grow their own vegetables or something. The space set aside for said gardens will quickly get vandalized and serve as another corner for drug deals of course.

Despite a lower socio-economic status, children of first-generation immigrants of Hispanic origin have better birth outcomes than children of US born white women and longer lifespans than whites, despite having higher rates of obesity and less access to health care. The Latino Mortality Advantage refers to the finding that Latinos in the United States live longer than non-Latino whites. In 2014, for example, Latinos had a three-year advantage in life expectancy at birth over whites (81.8 years versus 78.8 years). This survival advantage, which has been noted for the past few decades, is most pronounced among Latino first-generation immigrants, particularly those from Mexico, Central America and South America.

Second-generation children of Mexican and Cuban origin much better birth outcomes than children of US-born white women. Children of Puerto Rican origin have instead worse birth outcomes. The advantage observed among second-generation Hispanics erodes substantially in the third generation but third-generation Mexicans retain some of it. Latinos continue to have a survival advantage over whites. In fact, the latest data suggest an increasing advantage of Latinos over whites for life expectancy at birth because the situation for whites has been deteriorating.

As we were taught by countless Black Lives Matter bullhorn lectures and deeply-researched, masterfully-written Atlantic articles by the certified genius Ta-Nehisi Coates, investing in safe streets is violent racism. Instead, we need to invest in safe spaces for unarmed black youths, preferably in selective colleges with great social services, where racists who think they are white like Gourevitch will be kept away so they will not be able to attack black bodies.

The truth is that white liberals want to live in urban centers again, but also hate living near blacks. So they clear them out while at the same time creating “social programs” and “youth community centers” so they blacks don’t notice.

I would like to laugh at how naive the blacks are, but I haven’t really been all that impressed with whites lately either. Basically, the heritage americans (Black and White) should work together against the white liberals. Instead they’re at each other’s throats and it will stay that way.

One positive thing though is that I notice alot of African immigrants seem embarassed about the way their African-American brothers act. A number do actually act well. Of course, whether their kids do or not remains to be seen.

When people use the term “globohomo”, this is what they’re talking about.

As I understand it, the “homo” in globohomo refers to homogeneity, not homosexuality. It’s the assumption that all people and cultures around the world are essentially the same.

From Urban Dictionary: “A word used to describe a globalized and homogenized culture pushed for by large companies, politicians, and Neocon/Leftist pawns.”

  60. @Harry Baldwin

Well it’s both, really. Your reading of “Globohomo” with respect to homogeneity is correct, but the other homo works just as well. Not because there is some hidden cabal of gay men pulling the strings, but because it is redolent of a flaccid, bedridden, morally dying culture which is incessantly shouted at through loudspeakers to celebrate 11-year-old drag queens, sticks a rainbow flag on churches and buckets of chicken alike, normalizes all sorts of behaviors which for all of prior human history were felt to be, well, questionable at the very least.

A better more accurate term than either is of course “GloboShlomo,” but the very fact that it won’t get traction tells you just how accurate it is.

Yet in Gourevitch’s telling, long ago, before white people seized power and invented racism, all racial groups got equal amounts of manna from heaven free unlimited housing, education, water, and safe streets, also parks and fresh vegetables, from a government with an infinite budget– giving everyone amazing life-expectancy. Really, those who dwelt in that garden might have been immortal!

But then some malign spirit sent in white people to “disinvest” (more and more!) in African-American and Hispanic neighborhoods, stealing from the righteous people-of-color all the good things of the garden and their life-expectancy too.

We’re getting into Lord Raglan/Joseph Cambell territory here. Gourevitch is giving us the R. L. Stevenson’s Kidnapped version of urban economics: the evil white uncle has stolen the inheritance of the noble unarmed black teenager hero and sent violent racist white police to shoot him and throw his disabled black body into prison. Now we must help the young hero escape and reclaim the social services and long life-expectancy which are rightfully his. The evil white uncle* must be cast out of Streeterville and sent with his racist police to the Englewood they deserve.

these differences are always phrased in this negative way. the huge positive benefits of living in the US are never considered. only the differences in ultimate outcome. when it’s unreasonable to expect the outcomes to be the same.

Barack Obama has done it. So have Oprah Winfrey, Ronald Reagan, Malcolm of “Malcolm in the Middle” and Beyoncé.

But flashing the OK hand signal, in which the thumb and index fingers form a circle, has proved hazardous in recent weeks, with the Chicago Cubs banning a fan for making the gesture behind a black TV reporter, and Oak Park River Forest High School announcing it would reprint more than 1,700 yearbooks at a cost of almost $54,000 because some students were displaying the hand sign. A second local high school, Chicago’s Walter Payton College Prep, will also be reprinting its yearbook due to photographs of students making the OK sign.

What happened to the OK sign’s reputation for squeaky-clean sincerity? And how should the average person respond?

The short answer is that, starting in 2017, members of a discussion board called 4chan mounted one in a series of attempts to “troll” — or mock — liberals with a right-wing hoax, claiming that the OK sign was a symbol of white supremacy, according to Mark Pitcavage, a senior research fellow at the Anti-Defamation League. The idea was that “the libs” would take up the cry that the OK symbol was racist and, in so doing, make themselves look ridiculous …

Hmmm, there’s a correlation within this table that I probably shouldn’t notice. Following the civil rights and Great Society legislation of the 1960’s it seems as though the Englewood neighborhood became a less and less inviting place to live.

Causation? One of the great mysteries of our time.

  76. What is it about “life expectancy” that seems to confound so many? Just as the low life expectancy of most the world until the 2oth century isn’t the result of people reaching their twenties and suddenly keeling over but instead of a very high infant mortality rate, the Englewood numbers are the obvious end result of high mortality in the teen to young adult cohort. The numbers would be even worse if this weren’t almost solely a male problem.

As for the very high life expectancy in Streeterville, there’s a few things in play. The sample size is fairly small for a stat that is population based, so a relatively small number of outliers can have a large effect (the same applies in reverse to Englewood). It’s also a high cost neighborhood, so like expensive areas in San Francisco, New York, LA, etc., the residents skew much older than average, and there are likely very few children in the area. In other words, they’re not starting at zero.

The article refers to acturial tables that needed to be revised. The tables are used to calculate reserves needed for both active working and retired teachers as a group. The teachers longevity was longer than assumed in the tables being used.

A 65 yo women is expected to live to 85,

The average life expectancy for a person who was 65 years old in 2012 is 19.3 years – 20.5 years for women and 17.9 years for men. The difference in life expectancy at 65 years between males and females increased 0.1 year from 2.5 years in 2011 to 2.6 years in 2012.

    https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2014/10/08/us-life-expectancy-hits-record-high/16874039/

based on the articles I would expect a 65yo female teacher to live longer than the 90 group average:

  88. @dearieme

How do you calculate “life expectancy” for an area where presumably people move in and out?

    Good Question.

Here’s what the study says about its methodology:

    Calculation
Life expectancy estimates are calculated by constructing a life table for each census tract, as follows. Ages are aggregated into 5-year intervals, except the first two groups (aged 0-1 and aged 1-5 years).6 Death rates for the age groups were calculated over the 6-year period and applied to a hypothetical birth cohort to estimate the probability of surviving to the next 5-year age group.6 The life expectancy estimate is a summary measure that is based on the number and age of death of the residents in each census tract during the years of 2010-2015.5 https://www.cityhealthdashboard.com/metric/837

On its face, this doesn’t seem like a totally unreasonable way to define the hypothetical “life expectancy” associated with a particular patch of Tragic Dirt. One obvious flaw, however, is that this method assumes a static population that never immigrates or emigrates.

In reality, Englewood probably functions as the “bottom of the barrel” to which dysfunctional (and thus shorter-lived) people tend to gravitate. In other words, the more functional you are the more likely you are to move out of Englewood to somewhere better. Conversely, if you become dysfunctional you are more likely to move from somewhere else to Englewood.

So it’s a bit like observing that people in hospitals have lower life expectancy, and concluding that hospitals must lower life expectancy.

This backward reasoning is so common that it should be an officially recognized logical fallacy — i.e., “The Tragic Dirt Fallacy,” in honor of our host, who has been pointing it out tirelessly.

…In Englewood, neighborhood parks aren’t family friendly, fresh vegetables aren’t as readily available and gyms are few and far between, [Englewood resident Asiaha Butler] said. Meanwhile liquor, cigarettes and drugs are readily available.

    Get me rewrite.

“Latinos and African Americans have been shown to have, on average, lower future time orientation than whites and Asians. This is a major challenge for all poor people, so the issue is especially severe for the Latinos and African Americans attracted to Englewood by its low rents. Thus, there are needs (if not always demands) for high levels of expensive government services in this neighborhood, such as remedial education, subsidized housing, and aggressive policing,” Gourevitch said. “The city supplies the same clean water to Englewood and Streeterville,” he noted (for some reason).

…Due residents’ tendencies to litter, make noise, and join gangs, Englewood’s parks aren’t family friendly. Because healthy cooking and and eating aren’t priorities, grocers’ shelves have few fresh vegetables. Lack of interest in exercise means that gyms are few and far between. I don’t read MSM articles too much because “reading between the lines of MSM articles “or as simply as reading the author name or even with no name, there is always the undertow , of Jewish hatred for the White Race and for any sort of pure White Culture/Civilization.

“Jabba’s Fresh Hut” sounds like something you would like to visit.

Daily delivery by Mad Max-style monster trucks would add to the atmosphere.

  115. @obwandiyag

Chetty unintentionally debunked this idea. Blacks are much much more violent than their poverty would predict.

Further, the casualty of poverty and crime is uncertain. Being violent causes people and areas to become poor i.e. detroit was violent which made it poor. its also possible that some genetic traits underlie both conditions.

  116. “As Yogi Berra might have said, Englewood got so unpopular that nobody lives there anymore:”

Or, as the complete Yogi-ism stated:

That still makes it applicable, though.

Wrong. The Romans did not have a feudal type system or serfs. Not even in decline. However tenant farming was common so many farmers had to pay landlord rent. The only “tied” class was the numerous slave class who were not free to leave. A bit different and better than the American slave laws, but not good. Few realize that much of the reported war booty brought back by the Roman legions were slaves. Defeated soldiers (some who lived) and other enemies captured, women and children. Slave auctioneers followed the legions along with numerous camp followers.

No one in the US is “yoked” to jobs. Do you even live here? The US has the largest mobile workforce in history. Most of the current Texas population for instance, moved here in the last 40 years from far away.

With the rise of the Internet many work remotely from wherever they live. How is this yoking?

Your gloomy predictions are a product of fantasy depressive thinking. Better break out some Prozac.

When a university student I lived in a mostly black neighborhood for several years. The only supermarket was dirty and rundown. The veggies were subpar and few. Those in our house instead went weekly to the Farmers Market.

What I saw there at checkout were obese black women with carts loaded with junk food, ground beef or pork, some chicken, chips, huge 1/5 liter bottles of soda or some sugar drink. They paid with numerous food stamps. For cash they paid for cigarettes, malt liquor and cosmetics that Food Stamps would not work for (back when they were actually stamps).

The mostly black customers ate well sometimes. Steaks, chops, ribs, etc. I was so poor I seldom ate meat at all. As others note, the “food deserts” simply reflect what the local people want. In those places you find numerous fried food joints, chicken, fish, etc. And BBQ and burger places. Oh and donut shops. Lots of expensive but not very healthy food places. Few if any Chinese places. So again, they serve what the locals wanted. Today maybe more Mexican food which is better, but still poor blacks eat like children. Whatever is sweet or greasy and salty.

Mennonites only go to school till grade 8

I’m not familiar with their culture.

By and large, do M’ites send their kids to public skoolz? I assume that their model of choice is something like a little red schoolhouse staffed by M’ite moms.

In any case, in the US, public edyukashun was very commonly set up, in limited, cost conscious fashion, to provide what we now know as “basic skills” (done by eighth grade).

The expensive system of public (mis-) edyukashun, that we’re all familiar with (e.g where remedial courses are even provided free in junior college) is yet another tax leeching scheme foisted on us by the Progressives.

  120. @George

I am so sick and tired of hearing how skoolteachers are “underpaid”.

I conservatively estimate that on average, teachers are getting paid 5X more than they’re worth.

You are easily trolled. In what possible context would “homo” in “globo-homo” mean “homogenous”? The globalists aren’t pushing for homogeneity, and the ubiquitous rainbow flag isn’t representative of homogeneity.

What a lack of imagination you Dissidents have!

Just imagine the Big Pharma profits to be gleaned by taxing the last remaining productive white workers to extend the lives of all blacks to 90!

    It’s only fair!

Why, this wonderful expansion of rights and justice and fairness will make Affirmative Action’s and Civil Rights’s profits to corporations look like peanuts! Now not only will we be washing trillions of taxpayer dollars through blacks to pass to the likes of landlords, grocers, clothiers, cell phone manufacturers, and utilities companies…but to countless innovative lucrative medical opportunities to turn everybody’s biology into the new real estate!

And after all, think of how much the average black life expectancy has been increased through ER/trauma medicine paid for by public funding!

White tax and other dollars made that happen, and can make more happen! Reparations in longevity! Now!

Equity in aging! Everyone deserves a century of life–at white men’s expense!

That or I guess we could start killing off whites at 60. Though I thought that decrease in white longevity was already happening.

Thanks for that video clip! Looks like a meaningful correlation. Perhaps these wettest areas have had marginal agricultural productivity, allowing peasants to escape the notice of central authorities.

Sounds like the kind of problem that our SJW friends have gotten really good at fixing.

“The Romans did not have a feudal type system or serfs.”

I didn’t mention the feudal system. Though by late antiquity there were already arrangements that could be characterized as feudal. This was more from the invading barbarians than the indigenous Romans, so arguably it was not a “Roman” thing even though it was within the territory of the Roman Empire.

I did say the peasants “were yoked to land”, eventually becoming what we now call serfs. And this is undeniably true.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colonus_(person)

Roman law had always allowed that debtors who could not otherwise pay their debt could be taken as slaves by their creditors. As Roman prosperity declined, more debtors became insolvent and debt bondage slavery became more and more common, especially in the landed-proprietor/tenant-farmer relationship. The Diocletian law codes in the late third century formally tied tenant farmers to the land. The word “serf” came about later, but the reality was already there under different names.

“No one in the US is ‘yoked’ to jobs.”

You obviously haven’t talked to anyone holding any of the $13-odd trillion of consumer household debt in the US. The average middle aged person in the US has a six-figure debt liability. The average millennial holds less but also usually has no tangible asset to tally against it, and their student loan debts (over a $trillion) are not dischargeable in bankruptcy. So yes, they have to keep working, and they have to keep working to pay someone else’s interest at an occupation where the returns are sufficient to keep up with the interest. And this does not even consider the millions who are subject to divorce decrees wherein their highest earning potential is evaluated and then extracted under threat of imprisonment, leaving the subject in a state of debt bondage (aka slavery) in all but name. So yes, these people really are yoked to their jobs. They can only change jobs if they find one that pays better (and then their debt bondage is subject to increase).

The above also does not consider the tens of $trillions of additional debt that is being heaped up in your name by governments—local, state and federal—but does not appear on your personal balance sheet, though you will be expected—by those governments—to contribute to paying it back.

Enjoy your rose colored life while you can.
