Here’s a website, CounterSearch, that offers paired books on topics. For example:

The Rise and Fall of Civilizations
by Daron Acemoglu and James Robinson
Nations with extractive, exclusive institutions fail, while those with inclusive institutions succeed.
Garett Jones
Nations succeed because of the average intelligence of the population.
Or
Jared Diamond
The European and Asian civilizations beat out African and American civilizations because of the geography of the continents. Eurasia favored extensive trade and the evolution of a diverse set of domesticable animals and crops.
Michael Hart
European and Northern Asian peoples have dominated because the geographic and climatic conditions selected for populations that had higher IQ and were better at organized, technological violence.
I wonder who put it together?

  3. were better at organized, technological violence.

Yeah this was kinda the point I was alluding to earlier. While African Americans today excel at disorganized violence and brutality, whites have historically tended to excel at organized violence and brutality, leading uh blacks and whites in America today to both be wary of each other.

So while Ta Nehisi Coates endlessly laments the dark history of racist and violent whites brutalizing innocent black bodies in America, his white counterpart John Derbyshire seems endlessly alarmed by the absurdly high rates of violent crime perpetrated by blacks in this country today.

I’ve always thought that one amusing plot for a major Hollywood blockbuster could be an alien invasion threatening the very existence of planet Earth and uh finally bringing Coates and Derbyshire back together, where they ultimately both rediscover their common underlying humanity. Given the state of race relations in this country today, I could definitely see it being a tearjerker.

A black man obsessed with race and himself and a white man obsessed with race and himself finally both realize that underneath it all they’re both just, well people, flesh and blood, with dreams and fears, aspirations and doubts.

How many black friends do you have Yan Shen?

Should your answer happen to be "one" or something like that, don't be too thrilled. Racial experiences are shaped by racial numbers. No matter how wonderful your black friend, it's your encounters with blacks in large numbers that determines your opinion of them. For most people, these experiences are seldom something to look forward to.

He wants to build a political alternative to Wikipedia. Not recreate Wikipedia, that’s impossible, and fool-hardy for the 50% of topics that don’t have a political division. Nor create a Right-Wikipedia that Yins to Wikipedia’s every Yang. Rather, wherever Wikipedia feels the need to thought-police, there’s a story being censored. So, he wants an alternative that offers up both sides for consideration.

That’s the goal anyway. Still too early to tell whether he/they will pull it off. Obviously it’s an ambitious project. I think his 0.1 version idea is to trawl through Wikipedia itself and use the edits that have been censored by the thought police there (edits never go away they just get relegated to archive links) as initial text.

  11. As it happens I am reading Hive Mind right now. But I seem to have lost it. I think it might be under the bed. I had been reading Pinker’s book Better Angels but the puppy got a hold of it and ate several pages.

I seem to be too disorganized to keep up with my reading.

Hive Mind apparently has some tricky argument that the author keeps hidden in the first part of the book. I want to finish it to find out what it is. Otherwise it seems pretty weak. I only decided to read it because I went to George Mason many years ago.

  13. Prolly the CIA

    https://www.rt.com/usa/415609-us-army-ai-language-bot/

The description of what the US military wants from the future software is outlined in a request for the submission of white papers published on the Federal Business Opportunities website on Wednesday.

The self-improving AI tool is meant to work with text, voice, images and other content on social media in Arabic, French, Pashtu, Farsi, Urdu, Russian and Korean. It should understand colloquial phrasing, spelling variations, social media brevity codes and emojis, and also recognize various dialects. The content will be automatically analyzed for sentiment – at minimum distinguish positive, neutral and negative emotions and preferably tell anger, pleasure, sadness and excitement. It should also have the “capability to suggest whether specific audiences could be influenced based on derived sentiment.”

Additionally, the tool must be able to serve as a translator to English and back into the original language, and automatically generate “at least three, and up to 10, unique statements derived from one original social media statement, while retaining the meaning and tone of the original.” The responses should be customized according to whatever slang and emojis the original contained. The software is also required to monitor and analyze the impact of the message on the target audience.

Bots against books. Not much doubt.

  15. European and Northern Asian peoples have dominated because the geographic and climatic conditions selected for populations that had higher IQ and were better at organized, technological violence.

    Is this really true?

Southeastern China (Canton, Fujian, Zhejiang, Jiangsu) has historically been a center of trade and commerce. It also was China’s highest-performing region on the nationwide Imperial exam, which selected candidates to become high-ranking bureaucrats. It actually performed so well on the exams that quotas were put in place for China’s lower-performing northern provinces. In modern day China, the southeast is the wealthiest and most industrialized region. Almost the entire Chinese diaspora (HK, Singapore, Taiwan, SE Asia, Western nations) is of southeastern origin too.

Southeast China is also a region with hot, subtropical weather patterns.

    Read this quote.

    traveltips.usatoday.com/climate-southern-china-55791.html

The majority of southern China falls into the humid subtropical climate category. The same climate type, typically found on the eastern sides of large continents, also dominates most of the southeastern United States. Winters are mild and summers are hot and muggy.

According to prominent geneticist Dr. Luigi Luca Cavalli-Sforza, Southeastern Chinese genetically group in with Southeast Asians. They’re genetically relatively distant from Northern Chinese. I should mention that the Northern Chinese evolved under conditions of much colder weather, including occasional snow.

China is a refutation of the hypothesis that cold weather selects for high ability.

Let's look at other regions of the world.

Central Asia, Mongolia, and the ethnicities of the Russian far east live under conditions of cold and snow. They demonstrate comparably weak intellectual and economic dynamicism.

In Europe, the frigidly cold Eastern European nations are less economically advanced than those of Western Europe. Those nations also have poorer test scores and higher rates of homicide. Of course this is partly due to Communism, but historically Western Europe was more affluent and technologically advanced. So much so that American intellectuals preferred the immigration of Western Europeans over Eastern Europeans, who were seen as less capable and lower quality citizens.

Southern India, which is much hotter than Northern India, is the center of the IT/software industry. Hyderabad and Banglore are South Indian cities.

The indigenous peoples of North America evolved under conditions of cold, often frigid, climate. They demonstrate high rates of poverty, alcoholism, and homicide.

SE China was settled relatively recently by Chinese from northern China. Like during the Middle Ages. It took a long time because of the higher disease burden. Eventually it could support greater population because the weather means you have an additional crop every year.

    Let's look at human history.

Historically, advanced civilizations arose in regions with hot weather.

The Roman Empire, Greek Empire, Egypt, Carthage, Mesopotomia, Phoenicia, Persia, Indus Valley, Mayas, Incas, Aztecs, Mayuras, Guptas.

Take the Roman Empire as an interesting case study.

The Roman Empire built Hadrian's Wall to keep out barbaric Scottish tribes, who often raided and pillaged Roman territory.

    Picture of Hadrian's Wall.

    https://twitter.com/RobinStanfill2/status/951675371094765568

The Roman Empire conquered France, which was inhabited by a conglomeration of tribes known as the Gauls. The Romans regarded the Gauls as barbaric, ferocious, and uncouth.

Watch the first minute of this documentary.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wqFLBo9czE4

Rome was eventually destroyed by Germanic tribes, who the Romans also regarded as barbaric.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_DDyVrywZn8

The movie "Gladiator" portrayed a battle between Germanics and Romans. Of course, being a movie, this dramatized. However, this battle was based on real life occurences that happened at that time inhistory.

    Start watching from 2:30.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T0SNjnsi_rM

The western half of the Roman Empire collapsed, but the eastern half of the empire (the Byzantine Empire) flourished for centuries more. The Byzantines were considered more urbane, affluent, and civilized. They were also perceived as weaker and more effete.

The Byzantine Empire was "the savior to the Western world's profound heritage of law and literature." It also provided the cultural foundation that lead to the Renaissance, which pulled Europe out of the Dark Ages.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NCokYnoJNKg

Here's a map of the Byzantine Empire's territory. Notice that it includes many warm-weather ethnicities.

Some have claimed that northern hunter-gatherers&horticulturists were higher-ability than those from the warmer southern regions.

    This is not correct.

We can compare two groups of hunter-gatherer/horticulturists – Native Americans and Pacific Islanders. 13% of NAs have a college degree, while 14.4% of PIs have a degree. So the warmer-weather group is slightly ahead.

If you look just at southern Native American tribes, about 13% have a college degree. That’s the same as the NA national average (which includes both north and south). So there really doesn’t appear to be much of a relationship between warm/cold weather and academic attainment among NAs.

    See this Census data.

    https://www.census.gov/prod/2012pubs/acsbr10-19.pdf

Eskimos have a very low college attainment rate.

    http://www.iser.uaa.alaska.edu/Publications/formal/rsummary/RS_39_Higher_Ed_AKNatives.pdf

Lower than African-Americans, who are descended from warm-weather hunter-gatherers/horticulturalists.

White settlers designated five Native American tribes as being particularly advanced. They were called the “Five Civilized Tribes.” All these tribes(Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek, and Seminole) were based in the southeast.

The nation’s poorest Native Americans are in South Dakota.

They aren't really comparable; Pacific Islanders are descendants of people who crossed the Pacific in tiny boats and farmed. This is a vastly different skill set then what Native Americans had.

Eskimos have a very low college attainment rate.

It looks cultural; the source mentions a large shift in high school attainment going from 50% to 75% for the last two age cohorts.

The Roman Empire, Greek Empire, Egypt, Carthage, Mesopotomia, Phoenicia, Persia, Indus Valley, Mayas, Incas, Aztecs, Mayuras, Guptas.

Take the Roman Empire as an interesting case study.

The Roman Empire built Hadrian's Wall to keep out barbaric Scottish tribes, who often raided and pillaged Roman territory.

The Roman Empire conquered France, which was inhabited by a conglomeration of tribes known as the Gauls. The Romans regarded the Gauls as barbaric, ferocious, and uncouth.

Rome was eventually destroyed by Germanic tribes, who the Romans also regarded as barbaric.

The movie "Gladiator" portrayed a battle between Germanics and Romans. Of course, being a movie, this dramatized. However, this battle was based on real life occurences that happened at that time inhistory.

As it happens I am reading Hive Mind right now. But I seem to have lost it. I think it might be under the bed. I had been reading Pinker's book Better Angels but the puppy got a hold of it and ate several pages.

I seem to be too disorganized to keep up with my reading.

Hive Mind apparently has some tricky argument that the author keeps hidden in the first part of the book. I want to finish it to find out what it is. Otherwise it seems pretty weak. I only decided to read it because I went to George Mason many years ago.

    , my link has spoilers.

Interesting review from Amazon regarding this book.

It’s clear that low IQ nations should be recruiting from high IQ nations. Let India and China send their best and brightest there. This should be the default argument against mass immigration to 1st world countries.

Because you need food surplus for civilization.

If you feed low-IQ people more food, it doesn't result in them building advanced civilizations. Literate, urbane civilizations arose in these regions due to a combination of high-ability among the people and surplus food.

When cold-weather ethnic groups migrated into territories populated by warm-weather ethnicities, the cold-weather migrants didn't surpass the warm-weather natives. For example, the Mongol hordes were considered uncouth barbarians by the Chinese. The Germanic and Gaullic tribes were regarded similarly by the Romans.

In modern day China, the southeast is much more affluent than the colder northern provinces. In India, the south is home to the IT/software industry, while the northern states are relatively backward and plagued by illiteracy.

They aren’t really comparable; Pacific Islanders are descendants of people who crossed the Pacific in tiny boats and farmed. This is a vastly different skill set then what Native Americans had.

The Natives crossed thousands of miles into a very far away continent. Along the way, they encountered blizzards and frigid weather. Rushton's cold-weather hypothesis would predict superior cognitive abilities among them.

17.7% of African-Americans have a college degree. Higher than both Natives and Pacific Islanders.

It looks cultural; the source mentions a large shift in high school attainment going from 50% to 75% for the last two age cohorts.

For years, HBDers have been claiming that culture produces minimal inter-group differences in attainment. Now you're claiming the opposite of what's been said for many years.

You might be interested to know that the black graduation rate is 75%. For Hispanics, 78%.

Here are the statewide graduation rates for indigenous Native American (including Alaska Native) students. These rates are from a 2010 study from The Civil Rights Project/Proyecto Derechos Civiles at UCLA.

    Alaska - 46.8%
    Arizona - 52.4%
    California - 52.4%
    Idaho - 48.4%
    Montana - 50%
    New Mexico - 45.3%
    North Dakota - 37.9%
    Oklahoma - 63.8%
    Oregon - 42.7%
    South Dakota - 30.4%
    Washington - 42.7%

The Alaskan Natives don't do any better than Natives in Arizona, California, or Okalahoma. They slightly outperform those in New Mexico. So therefore there is no pattern of cold-weather people outperforming warmer-weather ethnicities.

The Dakotas have especially dismal Native graduation rates. Okalahoma is the strongest performer. With the exception of New Mexico, Natives do better in warmer southern states.

It also was China's highest-performing region on the nationwide Imperial exam, which selected candidates to become high-ranking bureaucrats. It actually performed so well on the exams that quotas were put in place for China's lower-performing northern provinces.

They're genetically relatively distant from Northern Chinese. I should mention that the Northern Chinese evolved under conditions of much colder weather, including occasional snow.

China is a refutation of the hypothesis that cold weather selects for high ability.

SE China was settled relatively recently by Chinese from northern China. Like during the Middle Ages. It took a long time because of the higher disease burden. Eventually it could support greater population because the weather means you have an additional crop every year.

SE China's population genetically groups in with the SE Asian populations. There were migrations of northern Chinese in SE China, but these two Chinese populations have a relatively high level of genetic distance. There are also cultural, linguistic, and physical differences between these two Chinese populations.

It's true that the warmer weather enabled higher-yield agriculture, which resulted in the region becoming relatively prosperous. This prosperity created excess capital, which enabled many SE Chinese to become merchants and traders. Prosperous peasants and businessmen often educated their children in local academies, which resulted in them dominating the national Imperial exam and assuming a high proportion of the positions in the extremely prestigious federal civil service.

The Northern Chinese produced fewer successful exam takers, so they demanded quotas in the civil service.

I think it is co-created by Vox Day. He's definitely talked about it a lot.

He wants to build a political alternative to Wikipedia. Not recreate Wikipedia, that's impossible, and fool-hardy for the 50% of topics that don't have a political division. Nor create a Right-Wikipedia that Yins to Wikipedia's every Yang. Rather, wherever Wikipedia feels the need to thought-police, there's a story being censored. So, he wants an alternative that offers up both sides for consideration.

That's the goal anyway. Still too early to tell whether he/they will pull it off. Obviously it's an ambitious project. I think his 0.1 version idea is to trawl through Wikipedia itself and use the edits that have been censored by the thought police there (edits never go away they just get relegated to archive links) as initial text.
