As I’ve pointed out many times over the years, the way New York Times articles often work is that the first paragraphs reassure NYT subscribers: Here is even more evidence that your world-view of who are the Good Guys and who are the Bad Guys is 100% right.

Those who keep reading, though, may find subversive facts toward the end. The honesty glass is half empty or half full, depending upon how far into an article you read. For example, from today’s New York Times:

Ilana Glazer Event at Synagogue Is Canceled After Anti-Semitic Graffiti Is Found

By William K. Rashbaum and Ali Winston
Nov. 2, 2018

A get-out-the-vote event at a Brooklyn synagogue featuring the comedian Ilana Glazer was canceled on Thursday night after anti-Semitic graffiti, including the words “Die Jew Rats,” was discovered scrawled on the temple’s walls, the police and officials at the synagogue said.

The vandalism, which is being investigated as a hate crime by the Police Department, jarred residents in a deeply progressive area of Brooklyn. It occurred on the heels of the mass shooting at a Pittsburgh synagogue last week and a recent spate of similar incidents in Brooklyn and Manhattan.

On Friday afternoon, the police released a photograph of a suspect, taken by a security camera inside the temple.

No verbal description of the suspect is offered. So just use your imagination! He’s probably a MAGA-hatted cross between Haven Monahan and Slingblade, depending upon your feelings/fetishes about Trump voters.

The event, at the Union Temple of Brooklyn on Eastern Parkway in Prospect Heights, was to include a question-and-answer session. Ms. Glazer, the co-star of “Broad City,” was scheduled to interview a journalist, Amy Goodman, and two candidates for the New York State Senate, Jim Gaughran and Andrew Gounardes.

shelbyyq My friends surprised me for my birthday tonight with tickets to see @ilanusglazer speak at @generatorcollective – a series of talks with activists and politicians about the importance of voting and humanizing politics. Unfortunately, after waiting for over an hour to enter the auditorium, we were notified that some emboldened bigot had covered the walls of the Jewish temple that was housing the event with anti-Semitic symbols and slurs. Organizers felt unsafe and uncomfortable carrying on with the event, and rightfully shut it down. THIS IS WHY WE NEED TO ELECT GOOD PEOPLE INTO OFFICE. This is why we gathered tonight. This is why we protest and demand real, direct action against acts of hate and violence. Thank you to the ever-badass @ilanusglazer and Amy Goodman of @democracynow for putting these kinds of events together and staying strong in the face of incredible intolerance. We will not be stopped or silenced. Your hate has no place in this country. ✊

But shortly after 8 p.m., Ms. Glazer announced the event was canceled because the graffiti, written with a black marker, had been discovered in various locations inside the temple, which was built in 1929.

Rabbi Mark Sameth of Union Temple said he learned from the temple’s president that the vandalism was found soon after it happened. “My first response was that it was sickening,” Rabbi Sameth said. “It would have been sickening under any circumstances, but all the more so following the horrific tragic events in Pittsburgh.”

The Police Department’s Hate Crime Task Force is investigating the incident, the police said. Other words written on the walls inside the synagogue included: “We are here,” “Hitler,” “Jew Better Be Ready” and “End it now,” the police said.

But eventually, for those who are still reading after about 500 words, the NYT finally lets slip the security cam photo of the evil white male neo-Nazi Alt-Right Trump voter who scrawled anti-Semitic graffiti on a progressive synagogue:

The words “black” or “African American” don’t appear in the article.

In contrast, when racial identity contributes to Narrative Maintenance, the NYT is extremely upfront about it:

Any sort of anti-Semitic act, whether violent or some form of vandalism or harassment, has enormous costs. You’re either going to prison and/or your name and face are going to be publicized across the country and you’ll be a pariah. As a result, the only people that are going to commit them are crazies or extremists on kamikaze missions like the shooter in Pittsburgh, or people for whom the costs aren’t as high because they don’t have normal jobs and responsibilities and are unlikely to ever have them. The latter population is going to be disproportionately black, especially in places like NYC.

Back in 2004, Michael Barone wrote “Hard America, Soft America,” which preceded and in some ways predicts the Haidt and Lukianoff book,”The Coddling of the American Mind,” which goes some distance to explain the reaction to this incident.

The overwrought emotional response to the vandalism gives the appearance of people being paralyzed in fear. In the face of childish graffiti, these folks act as if they’d prefer to curl up in the fetal position, rather than get on with their lives.

By acting as they have–canceling their program–they’ve ceded power to miscreants to disrupt lives. The better response is to push back by carrying on as planned, demonstrating that such vandalism will not be a deterrent.

The soft response to low-level criminality is how NYC was eventually overrun with crime as civilized behavior gave way to uncivilized behavior. The hard response–being ever vigilant–is how the city returned to civilized behavior. Perhaps the Rabbi and the congregants in Prospect Heights have forgotten the lessons.

One photograph developed by the F.B.I. showed Sivan Kurzberg holding a lighted lighter in the foreground, with the smoldering wreckage (of the WTC) in the background, said Steven Noah Gordon, a lawyer for the five.”

  40. @Arclight

An influential Jew’s theory perfectly adequately explain this–”false consciousness”. This black guy may think he has a problem say with his cheapskate Jewish landlord, but really his problem is the structural racism of American society. He is simply deluded because of white gentile domination of American media and culture.

As Stevens, Brooks, Rubin, Krugman, Podhoretz … Goldberg have repeatedly explained, once America is more thoroughly diversified through more immigration–breaking the white gentile stranglehold on our national life–a true American utopia will come into being and this guy’s prospects and life expericne can’t help but radically improve.

  41. @Steve Sailer

Marriage is a huge influence on white people’s voting. Black people’s voting, not so much.

Generally, i’d say these other factors are indicative of how the parties programs appeal and slice up the white electorate after the initial racial distribution–which will always the the most powerful factor–is done.

But while the black numbers aren’t going to move in absolute magnitude with these social factors comparable to the white numbers, it would be interesting to sort of “norm” the black numbers in some fashion to account for the overall black skew and see what affect the factor have.

I definitely believe the sex and marital factors are there for blacks–based on what i’ve read and from talking to black guys i know.

  43. Bugg says:

Once again the Jews do not grasp African-Americans do not like them. As we used to discuss in sociology classes at NYU back in the day, African-Americans view every institution that does them wrong spare the cops as largely Jewish-teachers in public schools, their landlords, their lawyers, the judges and DAs prosecuting them and theirs, social service bureaucrats. Such discussions would never be allowed today.

That synagogue is about 4 blocks from where back in the early 1990s after an Hasidic rabbi’s driver struck and killed a small Caribbean boy, Lemrick Nelson stabbed Hasidic Yankel Rosenbaum to death, sparking a complete riot. Also featured liberal columnist Jimmy Breslin trying to bond with his African brothers only to be stripped, beat up and robbed, which was a moment of glorious comeuppance and schadefreude . It may be a more pleasant place today, but the uneasiness and anger is still there. The hipsters who have moved in to the area do not grasp this resentment and anger.

Secular Jews do not understand while them view themselves as sophisticated and urbane compared to their Hasidic co-religionists, African-Americans see them as one big group. They do not view that group as some enlightened protector, but rather like all whites another bunch of white people in their way. All the paternalistic happytalk in the world will not change that.

One wonders why exactly is a synagogue hosting her? This sort of garbage would certainly not be contenanced at my local Catholic Church. I’ll grant some mainline Protestant church fly the fag flag and are thoroughly post-Christian, but still i wouldn’t expect this. How does this comport with their mission?

If this is acceptable in you synagogue then its purpose is not religious but merely an ethnic cheerleading organization.

After race, I would have thought owing your own house would be one of the biggest factors determining voting patterns. That’s why economic right-wingers used to want to restrict the franchise to property owners. Once people own their own house they are more likely to vote for the party that is perceived to be best for the economy. In contrast, renters are more likely to vote for the party that hands out the most free stuff.

  54. Anon[132] • Disclaimer says:

I reflexively jump to the 80 percent point in New York Times articles and scan up because of this, but I also do it at The Atlantic and Slate for another reason: The phenomenon of padding out minor observations to article length so the writer can get paid for an article rather than a tweet. To do this, the first half of the article will be some sort of recap to set up the meager original content, or some sort of obfuscation to conceal that the article is really just an “aggregation” of some other outlet’s article or scoop. By jumping towards the end and moving up I can skip the chaff.

Also, I remember the Turkheimer/Harden/Nisbett thing at Vox that “debunked” Charles Murray and Sam Harris. The beginning was a blistering but vague take down of them. From about the middle they let on that they accept a list of things that are essentially the main points of “The Bell Curve.” By about the 75 percent point they get more numerically explicit (that blacks are at least 2/3 of a standard deviation lower than whites in IQ — but not 1 full SD!). And in the second to last paragraph it is revealed that only Turkheimer really believes what they wrote, Nisbett just leans toward it, and Harding thinks there isn’t evidence to support it at all yet (and in fact is now writing a book about how we need income redistribution to rectify the injustices caused by “the genetic lottery”). This article was tweeted all over the place by people who only read the first few paragraphs. If nothing else, to save yourself embarrassment you should jump to the end of any long piece you tweet to verify that there are no switcheroos in it.

Because that’s where the threats to world peace come from these days.

The movie came out right after 9/11.
