From Fox News:

Popeyes’ customer body-slammed in parking lot speaks out for the first time
By Gerren Keith Gaynor | Fox News

The woman who was body-slammed outside of a Tennessee Popeyes restaurant in a now-viral video is speaking out for the first time.

Deborah Staggs, 55, is recovering after the attack by a Popeyes employee left her with a broken arm in 16 places, nine broken ribs and a shattered kneecap.

It’s the accusation that she used the N-word, however, that Staggs is most concerned about.

    OT

I may have discovered a new Sailer’s Law topic after looking hot, hair, and feelings: “Let’s talk about my fertility.”

A couple of week’s ago a New York Times Opinion piece on “The End of Babies” briefly trended. I sent it to Kindle to read, but it was 5,000 words, and I bailed out halfway. About to delete it today, I skimmed and then read the rest, and it was worth it.

First of all: A 5,000-word opinion piece? What’s going on?

The piece is by Anna Louie Sussman, “a journalist who writes on gender, reproduction, and economics.” So, a reproduction reporter, seemingly late thirties or early forties, living in New York.

It covers declining birth rates in various countries and quotes some experts and is generally pretty boring until the “Let’s talk about my fertility part.”

She got a couple of master’s degrees, studied abroad, established a writing career, and then had her eggs frozen at 34. And then:

At 34, I finally underwent the procedure [egg freezing]. Last year, I did another round. Ever since then, there’s a number I’ve been playing with as I’ve wondered about whether and when I will use those eggs. According to my back-of-the envelope calculations, I should have $200,000 saved before having a child.

    :
    :

Where did I get the $200,000 figure from? First, there’s at least $40,000 for two rounds of IVF.

Why not look for a boyfriend? Silly flyover yokel, this is why:

That I am contemplating this route also speaks to the obstacles of dating under late capitalism — but that’s a subject for a different article.

I can’t wait for that article.

She says she’s going to be a single mother, so the egg freezing is not just in case she is infertile when she gets married.

In that moment, I understood why I had frozen my eggs. Intellectually, I am skeptical, even critical, of the inherent narcissism of preserving one’s own genetic material when there are already so many children without parents. Even as I was going through with it, injecting drugs into my abdomen each night until it came to resemble a dart board, I struggled to articulate why, at least in a way that made sense to me…. I craved genetic continuity, however fictitious and tenuous it might be. I recognized then something precious and inexplicable in this yearning, and glimpsed how devastating it might be to be unable to realize it. For the first time, I felt justified in my impulse to preserve some little piece of me that, in some way, contained a little piece of him, which one day might live again.

  19. Her comments make sense given the climate these days.

Claims that she used the N-word could substantially reduce prison time for the employee who assaulted her, substantially reduce a payout from Popeyes, and destroy any future employment prospects.

  20. This comes down to the whole ‘asking for it’ thing.

It used to be accepted wisdom that if a woman was wearing an extrememly slutty dress, in a bad neighborhood, and drunk, was ‘asking for it’. That’s not the same thing as excusing the behaviour of the perpetrators, but there is a definite common sense factor involved. Maybe a word was used and maybe it wasn’t.

But to go back to the bottom line, when did the “N” word become the anti christ of all bad words? I get why a black person would be offended by it, but to break bones in an altercation because of it? Jail time for the perp should be mandatory. (BTW I think most ‘fighting words’ provisions have be either struck down or at least really tamed by the courts). Same with the douchebag who decided days after the fact that he assaulted the white football player with his helmet because he used a slur.

Well, I guess it works, and until it doesn’t, you’ll get more of it.

  21. SFG says:

I agree it’s funny to watch someone who was put in the hospital worried that someone might think she was racist against the people who put her there. But think about it for a moment.

The video is viral. Everyone knows who she is. If the idea is out there that she is racist, she may be targeted again by woke people, and she’s 55 and obviously not feeling too great after her injuries.

So it’s just sensible to reassure most people that no, she is not a racist.

I don’t know if you get it the way I get it, S. TX guy. You know that black people call each other this slur all the time. None of them get one little bit offended by it. No, they want everyone else to be scared shitless of using that word, because that is a measure of their power.

Yes, if one can excuse a body slamming (with near a dozen broken bones) of a middle-aged lady because she said the word n**ger, then black people have been given great power indeed. It’s ridiculous, unfair, unconstitutional, and so on, but nonetheless…

If you’re in the process of searching for a new car right now, Antonio Seba, an energy and transportation disruption expert, says there are two things you need to know.

One: This will be the last car you’ll ever purchase. And two: Lease your vehicle, he suggests, because it will be worth virtually nothing four or five years from now.

Seba’s findings indicated that, between 2020 and 2030, the number of passenger cars in the U.S. will drop by 80 percent, with 60 percent of remaining vehicles owned by fleet operators. Ninety-five percent of all miles driven will be in those fleets of on-demand, autonomous vehicles.

Seba, on the other hand, says public transportation systems as we know them today will not survive in most of the country. New York’s Subway could endure because of the city’s extremely high population density, but he says systems in most cities, even Washington, D.C., don’t stand a chance. He points to the fact that many of the systems, such as New Jersey Transit, are underwater already and there’s no way they will survive once cheap autonomous ride sharing is an option.

At one time Christianity provided the overarching moral guidance on this kind of thing, but with Christianity effectively dead for legislative purposes, we are left with the secular law as the standard operating procedure for field visits to fast food establishments.

Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.

When did I say any verbal “attack” justified a violent response, John? That’s just my point here – the N-word, so to speak, is now a weapon of power, as blacks use it to each other all the time, right in front of everybody, in fact. (so it’s not just some kind of private black thing). They dare anybody else, at least when they are in bigger and stronger groups, to ever say it, even to one another! It has become this magical word that indeed works wonders for them, such as getting them excused from all kinds of violence.

BTW, just to set it straight, qualifying my response a bit, there are “fighting words” within the law that can justify a first strike, but it depends on lots of other factors (who is in whose face and how close, etc.) I defer again to Jack D. again here, my go-to commenter for all things not involving shit that he thinks he knows more than me about, but doesn’t.

And certain words will only be criminal based on the genetic makeup of the speaker (e.g., a white gentile saying “schvartza” under his breath). They will develop the technology to scan brains and retrieve (“unmask”) past speech and mental states.

Come on. You live in N. Florida. When’s the last time you saw a white person behind the counter? People will laugh at you for talking like that and almost be justified in kicking your ass for making fun of them. However, not to worry, as not a one of them will hear you, being in the middle of a conversation before you ordered, while you’re ordering, and afterwards. Did they actually hear that “hold-the-mayo”* bit? You’ll only know later and then have to decide whether it’s worth 5 more minutes wait and/or a possible body slam to keep your cholesterol low. The irony is, if it weren’t for the excessive costs of higher education, college/grad school would be the ideal time to for a high IQ woman to have a child. (Singapore-a country that has imitated Israel closely in the past, most notably the military in the aftermath of the Six-Day War-also has generous pro-natalism incentives, but the government has completely undermined this by allowing rentier economics to run wild enough that they nullify the benefits the government offers. You can’t just bark at young people to do their duty, you’ve got to give them the practical means to form families. And mass immigration from the PRC meant to keep the country majority Han in the meantime just makes things worse. Already brutal work hours longer, already low wages lower, already high rents higher, and already insane educational competition and standards fueled by both the local culture and the economy more insane.)

A woman who has taken care of her body can still, with a bit of luck, have time for a couple of kids at 35 years old. Fertility does noticeably decline by this point, so it does take more effort (really, though, who complains about THAT part of the conception process?), but contrary to what some here say, it is hardly impossible: the plunge into infertility doesn’t happen for most women until they hit 40. Sure, better yet would be an economic structure that is friendlier to couples interleaving family formation with work/studying throughout their 20s and 30s. But we can’t hold our breaths on that happening anytime soon, so in the meantime, go IVF treatment.

Popeyes (no apostrophe) was founded by white guy Al Copeland and named after fictional Detective Popeye Doyle from The French Detective, not the cartoon character (though they later licensed him). It was eventually acquired by the Canadian group that also owns Tim Hortons and Burger King. Their current Aunt Jemima-like mascot Annie is played by actress Deidrie Henry who otherwise has no relation to the company. Annie’s purpose is not so much to bring in black customers, of which they have plenty already, but to reinforce the brands association with Louisiana, which distinguishes it from KFC.

This has interesting implications for American domestic politics depending on how the Democrats respond. If they choose to ignore the issue as much as possible, then Beijing knows who they’ll back in 2020. But doing so gives Trump a massive opening. If they give into their wider ideological impulses, though, Beijing’s not going to help them, because Trump is still less likely to go to war over human rights issues than most of the plausible Democratic alternatives. Other than the brief fire-up over Taiwan in early 2017, Trump has been visibly indifferent to what goes in Xinjiang or Tibet. The New York Times hasn’t been.

And even America’s corporate overlords need to have the backing of one of the political parties. If both parties choose to openly take the side of the Hong Kongers, what are they going to do?

Underlying this is that for all the media whining about Russia, China (along with Israel and Saudi Arabia) is a far more influential and active participant in trying to manipulate American politics. They’ve also got way more economic and global heft now than Russia could ever hope to drudge up, no matter how tactically skilled the Russians remain at anything intelligence related. Near total media silence on this underlines part of why attempts to make this into Watergate 2.0 are bound to fail. The hypocrisy is just way too visible, especially after 3 years of nonstop coverage has still failed to eject Trump. It’s becoming a weight around Democratic necks, not Republican ones.

When she, with numerous injuries and broken bones, focusses on the hurt feelings of her attacker and the rest of the savages present, she forfeits any claim to sympathy from any reasonable person.

Personally, I have been in many stores and restaurants in the black ghetto of Philadelphia and not only have I not been body slammed, I have never been treated with the slightest discourtesy. I have been in establishments with bulletproof partitions, not on the “good” size but out among the wildlife and yet nothing happened to me. However, I never called the employees by the N-word either. This was a case of “Karen” (the “may I speak to the manager” lady) gone wrong.

Our society may be irrational but this woman (or rather her attorneys – she has lawyered up and is preparing to sue Popeyes) is absolutely not. As others have explained, if she is looking for a big payday from the corporation and a long sentence for Deriance Ra’Shaiel, anything that mitigates or justifies his acts in the eyes of the jury pool, such as the fact that she is a no good white trash racist who goes around calling people by the N-word, is quite distinctly and rationally NOT to her advantage and she cannot allow these claims to go unanswered.

  82. Lowe says:

Yeah, I agree with this. There was no reason to issue any statement of her own.

Let her attorneys issue a statement to the effect that she denies any responsibility whatever for her assault, and make it clear there will be legal action against anyone who continues to slander her. That would be the best way to protect her reputation, because news organizations who wanted to push the “asking for it” angle could end up in court.

The first (and last) time I visited New Orleans my large chain hotel (I think it was the Marriott) was on Canal Street so I wasn’t really expecting to be staying what turned out to look an awful lot like a black ghetto to me – I thought I was staying in the downtown tourist section that would be somewhat gentrified. Most of the hotel guests appeared to be black (possibly there was some black convention or sporting event in town as in the current incident) but appeared to be reasonably well behaved, but this could not be said of the denizens of the street who hung out around the liquor stores along Canal Street and fought with each other. Luckily there were no shots fired when I was walking by (these guys are usually terrible shots and hit more bystanders than targets) but this was purely by luck – it really looked as if the shooting could have broken out at any moment.

The Popeyes spokesactress “Annie” makes it clear that “Louisiana” is a euphemism for “black”. I have to confess that in my ignorance it had not occurred to me that this was true of New Orleans in general (this was before Katrina – I gather that it is somewhat whiter now). Obviously I knew that as a Southern city there would be a lot of black people but I didn’t imagine that they would even dominate the downtown core.

The behavior of the scum behind the counter is shocking to me, a 2 year veteran of working at a fast food place in the 1980s where probably 60% of the employees and clientele were black. The manager would not have tolerated anything like that, ever. Standards have fallen so badly.

The staff at the restaurant seem hopped up on something.

Just off the top of my head, a chemical company owner was extradited from the UK to the US for selling perfectly mundane and legal chemicals like iodine and red phosphorus.

Iodine — something you can buy at the corner pharmacy.
Red phosphorus — frequently used by pyrotechnic hobbyists and for perfectly valid chemical experiments.

The US went after him because people were buying those chemicals from that vendor to make meth. This sort of extradition, though, wouldn’t be possible were it not for the “you my bitch” treaty the UK signed. Iodine and phosphorus were not illegal in the UK at the time, and the vendor claims he didn’t know that the purchasers were doing anything nefarious with those chemicals.

All in all, it was a shameful example of overzealous prosecution. I’m sure that there are many others that I’m not aware of, offhand.

Well, how you’d intuitively expect it to. Keeping the labor market saturated keeps wages down and gives more power to employers in a work culture already infamous for long hours. An influx of people on an already crowded island means higher rents and more people being unable to afford their own places through their 20s. Etc, etc. It does not help that unlike immigration to the US, immigration to Singapore from the PRC heavily targets the lower-middle rather than the upper-middle classes.

I’m not suggesting that mass immigration is the sole or even the most important reason why native Singaporeans are finding new family formation difficult, but it definitely contributes to an economic situation hostile to it. And in the government’s defense, the Singaporean Chinese do have the dubious honor of having the single-lowest birthrate in the world. However, the non-Han Singaporeans are not especially fecund these days, either, for the same reasons. This means that a lot of the worries about demographic instability that motivate the policy of mass immigration from the PRC, are, if not unfounded, then overblown.

(One thing that few people touch on: in the 21st Century, forming families is probably genuinely less appealing because there’s also so much more to do and enjoy. If you lived in a backwards village centuries ago and were going to stay there for the rest of your life, having kids was probably a break from the monotony. It was also more necessary given the prevalence of death: one reason why Africa’s population is spiking is because of the improved economic and development on the continent. I don’t see any serious proposals from the far-right on how to address this. Robots picking up some of the slack?)

Once, I heard a story about what happened at a MacDonalds by the West 4 St and 6 Avenue subway station in Manhattan. I went there all the time. No trouble. Although the neighborhood is white, that area has a lot of night life. For example, the MacDonalds is right by a basketball court with supposedly the best street basketball in the world. Story I heard was a white guy was arguing with a black manager. The black patrons were taking the white guy’s side, until he used the N word. What I hear is the guy left immediately but never made it across the street to the station.

If I had a daughter, I’d put more faith in her safety though exercising common sense and knowing how to defend herself than in whatever lectures the #MeToo movement comes up with. Her safety would be what is important. What is “right” in an ideal world? I don’t give a damn. Around here the biggest difference between the two chains is that Bojangles franchises are located wherever any other fast food franchises are. They share the market with Arby’s, McDonald’s and Burger King, and even going head to head with KFC. You’ll find them next to malls in the suburbs and in the strips that serve the exits from freeways.

Popeyes franchises are always located in low rent commercial areas, which they share with other chains such as Church’s fried Chicken and Golden Skillet. in other words, Popeye’s is low rent, while Bojangles is more mainstream. That’s pretty much the rule around here, though it may vary in other states for all I know.

Legally speaking, HK has autonomy over everything except foreign and military policy, including economics (they have their own currency), judiciary, and administration. So, I suppose in a purely theoretical sense, it would depend on whether this is interpreted as a matter of economics because it is about trade, or foreign policy, because it concerns extradition treaties with the US.

In practice, Beijing could also theoretically send in the PLA to dictate terms on whatever they want, just like the British could before them. Everybody knows it. But if Beijing goes too far, it’s going to be a Pyrrhic victory at best. Any potential of selling “one country, two systems” peacefully to Taiwan will be dead as a dodo for at least a generation or two, and it’ll reinforce America’s position in the region. The Chinese might be able to sell their political model to Africans who just want out of poverty at all costs, but their developed regional neighbors are going to take a good, long hard look at Hong Kong before considering Beijing as an alternative to Washington as a power broker. There is some history between China and its neighbors, not all of it pleasant: even before all this started, the Vietnamese adamantly refused to allow Huawei to send in 5G into their country on grounds of national security. And should the US position as a global watchdog become untenable due to internal problems, I wouldn’t be surprised if some of them start looking at nukes and defensive alliances themselves: which could turn hot pretty quick.

Of course not. But June was a long time ago. As Mr Soros has mentioned, the ringleaders (who are essentially antifa-style hardcore operatives) are reported to be well-compensated.

Reports of payments for differing degrees of ‘protesting’ are widespread here in HK. My daughter recently got a notice at her school reminding students not to respond to the various online offers of cash they are regularly receiving if they agree to participate in protests.

There’s a rumor that HK has had a couple of weeks of relative peace because a recent robbery of around 2 million US dollars was actually the regular shipment of protester payment cash getting picked off — by whom, I don’t know.

I dunno, man, .83 (last time I checked) is pretty hard to beat, and that’s including all the incentives that the Singaporean government doles out for graduate women to pop out kids. Most of those cities can build outwards, and even places like Seoul don’t have to deal with half the nearby land being cordoned off for the military.

The only city that probably exceeds Singapore’s housing issues is Hong Kong, which is currently starring some seriously pissed off young people who can never hope to attain middle class status not least because of rentier economics. And even they’ve got the New Territories and, if necessary, Shenzhen. Johor Bahru has tried to attract Singaporeans, but cross-border traffic is nowhere near as easy as it is with HK/Shenzhen.

Indians were not far behind at 1.14. I don’t recall exactly what the Malay birth rate was, but it was definitely the highest, yet still well below replacement. It’s kind of weird to know this, because normally Singapore is super sensitive about any internal data that is racially related.

HK: Proposes a an extradition treaty with China. Major mayhem erupts. “Great Powers” need to intervene like it’s 1912.

Blah, blah, blah, blah. If UK voters think their extradition with the US is being abused one of their parties can put cancelling it on their agenda.

The simple and fundamental truth, always and everywhere:

If someone does not *want* you around–country club, school, neighborhood, nation–and you are making them … you are the thug, not them. (Goes for forcing people to associate with you–bake your homo-wedding cake, etc.–as well.)

If any people do not want to be part of some nation and are willing to take on the costs of going on their own, then they have a fundamental (moral) right to do it. (Legal rights are another thing.)

If the people of Hong Kong, don’t want to be absorbed into China … the Chinese are the assholes in any dispute about it. Period. All people have a right to be free and to negotiate the conditions–if any–under which they wish to associate with or be a part of some larger entity.

The people of Hong Kong–or Britain in the EU, or Quebec in Canada, or the Scots in the UK, or the Indians under the British Raj, or the Irish in Britain, or the American colonies back in the day or white people in the US today–are not slaves who belong to other people.

    Nor do I.

I have never figured out why trying to prevent crimes in the first place is victim blaming.

In my opinion, leftists can’t/won’t give good advice to prevent people from getting mugged, raped etc. for a number of reasons:

-Any good advice either consists of warning people from certain behaviours leftists approve and promote (getting drunk, doing drugs, having lots of promiscuous sex, …) or it consists of warning against close contact with people leftists consider victims and are allied with (blacks, Muslims, ex-felons, mentally ill people, homeless, drug-addicts, …)
(Case in point: The terrorist who stabbed to death Cambridge-educated leftist Brits was a Muslim ex-felon and therefore a victim in the eyes of leftists)

-From my experience hardcore-leftists believe that actions should not have consequences. If they were to warn people against certain behaviours, they would admit that these behaviours likely lead to negative consequences.

-The third point is a bit speculative: I do not know to what extent this applies to leftists in the US, but in Germany I have the impression, that a lot of hardcore-leftists believe, that one can “speak things into existence”. (Things become true, because you talk about them, for instance “Race is a social construct, Gender is a social construct)
Under this assumption, people are more likely to be mugged, raped etc., because you warn them about it.

Black fragility. There is only one word in English that you aren’t even allowed to write out fully when only referring to it.

If it were only that simple. I think it’s more a matter of Whites hating other Whites with the ‘racism’ label.

True enough, there is a set of Blacks who go apeshit crazy at the ‘N’ word, but I really think most view it as it really is; just another bad word for the most part used by people in frustration. For example, if someone tells you that your mother is a whore, is she? Does that justify physical violence? And is that violence just a fat lip or maybe a broken nose, or is multiple broken ribs, a skull fracture, etc.? Where is the line?

*I realize I’m preaching to the choir.

What would William the banker whore think of Carney the Canadian central banker now running the Bank of England?

I prefer William the Conqueror to William the banker whore.

The US military today is bought and paid for with demand stolen from the future in the form of government debt and loot conjured out of thin air by central banker shysters.

The ruling class of the American Empire is buying off the upper middle class and the US military and government workers and White Americans born before 1965.

The Pewitt Plan to raise the federal funds rate a measly three times would dislodge the ruling class of the American Empire from power. The first rate rise would be from the current rate below 2 percent, to six percent. The second rate rise would be to 10 percent. The third rate rise would go from 10 percent to twenty percent.

The asset bubbles in stocks, bonds and real estate would implode long before you got to 20 percent. I think a federal funds rate of 6 percent would create an immediate asset bubble implosion.

I suspect the assault of Staggs was a way for the assailant to prove how tough he was in front of other staff. It certainly was a lot safer to attack a middle aged white woman thanrisk fighting a young black man with the incredibly robust and dense bones of his own race and sex.

Impressing their friends or rivals in the group is probably a common reason for apparently motiveless attacks, or the real reason for ones allegedly motivated by use of the N word . I watched and listened to the tape and didn’t hear a word the White victim said. Maybe it was because of the howling and yowling of the gang of blacks behind the counter.

If she did say the Word That Must Not Be Uttered Popeyes and the monster who injured her will not be able to use it as a defense because the black howling and howling drowned anything she said out.

Reasonably sure. My observation when I was there-I’ll readily admit I don’t have statistics-was that Hong Kong wasn’t richer than mainland China’s top-tier cities anymore, yet the cost of living is still significantly greater. Granted: for that cost of living, you get all the goodies of living in Hong Kong, but they aren’t likely to be enough to offset the cost for a 20-something looking to marry, move out, and start a family.

Underlying all this is that HK and Singapore have grown about as much as they can without running into a border or another barrier of some kind. Across the border in Johor Bahru, Chinese construction companies are trying to attract Singaporeans to recently built housing estates-and Malaysia is a reasonably cheap place to live-but Malaysia is a foreign country with all that implies for travel time, not to mention the crime issue in Johor. I don’t think Hong Kongers would fact that issue with Shenzhen, but Shenzhen is not as cheap as Johor, and there’s the whole hukou mess to sort out. (I’ve found crime in Johor overstated as an American who is more familiar with what not to do in urban areas with known crime, to be fair: the real issue is that Singaporeans are comically easy, visible targets after many decades of crime being a non-factor, as my lady acknowledged.)

Shanghai, by contrast, is full of recently sprouted up suburbs going out toward the airport on Metro Line 2 or down south toward Minhang or whatever. Eventually, of course, that’ll hit a limit, but the way that less well-known cities in China are really coming into their own. China’s got plenty of issues coming up ranging from debt to too many single men to organized crime, but I’m not too worried about that one.

Re, Singapore and subsidized housing, my partner (who I’m considering whether to marry or not) comes from a pretty poor, blue-collar family: they have the apartment because of the 99 year policy that all citizens have, so I don’t worry about them ending up homeless. The issue is that the government subsidies aren’t keeping pace with the cost of living, and family formation is unavoidably expensive in a developed, urbanized society. You get a government bonus if you have a child, but the child is going to be going through the cut-throat educational system and cram schools and everything else you’d expect to see in an East Asian culture, which is going to eat up all that and then some. A lot of younger Singaporeans want out because it’d be easier to start families elsewhere.

The plan in China (already implemented – unlike the US they still build things in China and build them really fast) is to put in high speed rail so that nearby cities within a 100-150 km radius (e.g. Suzhou, Hangzhou to Shanghai, Tianjin to Beijing) can be commuting suburbs with train rides of 25 to 40 min.

To give you an idea of what this would mean in American terms, Shanghai and Hangzhou are about as far apart as NY and Philadelphia. The fastest Acela train is 1hr6min and the fare is around $125. The fastest G-Train is 38 min and costs around $11. If we could do something similar (and we can’t) then people could commute from Philly where housing costs are much lower, you could have dinner in NY and see a play and return home the same evening, etc. But we can’t have nice things because infrastructure is super expensive to build and operate due to unions, environmentalists, etc. and we have to spend all of our money on foreign adventures and/or the welfare state.

China is not exactly uncrowded either. They had an existing roadbed in the Beijing -Shanghai corridor
(about equal to NY- Atlanta)and they built the new high speed line right next to it, elevated pretty much all the way. I saw it from the old line when it was under construction – they pretty much built it all at once and in only a couple of years – they had 100,000 construction workers (all of whom were actually working and not standing around) living in hot bunked trailers all along the right of way. A semi-pro baseball game is about to start, the teams assembled at their benches. On the third base bench, I’m seated next to a white pitcher named Steve, 6’1/200, new to the team that day, a Sacred Heart grad recently released by the Red Sox. Standing in front of us swinging a bat is a black guy named Kenny, about 5’11/180. He went to Wilson, and is also playing his first game with us. Now, coming down the third base line, headed for the other bench is a black sprite, maybe 5’5”/130, who’s somewhat famous because he stole 90+ bases one year in the minor leagues. But he’s moving like an epileptic chicken, up on his toes taking short choppy steps with hands splayed out to the sides. Steve says, out loud and to no one in particular, “Why is it the fastest guys always walk like they’re crippled?” These words had barely left his mouth when Kenny spun around, dropped the bat, yelled “racist motherfucker!,” and caved in Steve’s face with one punch (drenching my jersey with blood). We were told later that Steve, an SFPD cadet, required $20k in reconstructive surgery.
