In the New York Times:

The Future of the American Left

By David Brooks

Opinion Columnist

… I would disagree with this [Bernie Sanders] agenda on pragmatic policy grounds, but at least it would be humane. It’s a positive, universalist agenda that aims at social solidarity and national cohesion — we’re all in this together. It would be, as Sheri Berman writes in Dissent, enchanted with a radical idealism.

Nonetheless, I don’t think this is the leftism we will wind up with. Tribalism is in the air, on the left as well as on the right. It is based on a scarcity mentality, the idea that life is a zero-sum war between us and them. It emphasizes division and conflict, not solidarity and cohesion. It draws out the authoritarian tendencies in any movement. On the right, tribalism brings us the ethnic authoritarianism of Donald Trump. On the left, it seems likely to bring us the economic authoritarianism of a North American version of Hugo Chávez.

You can see authoritarianism entering the left through two avenues. The first is nationalism. Not long ago, most of the American left tended to think transnationally — partly because problems like climate change are global, partly because it’s hard to regulate a global economy nation by nation, partly because progressives used to be psychologically averse to nationalism.

But national sovereignty is not withering away. Left-wing hostility toward European Union-type multilateral organizations is at record highs. Now a lot of progressive economic thinking is nakedly nationalistic. Bernie Sanders in 2015 derided a more open immigration policy as a “Koch brothers proposal.” It’s the old xenophobia — us or them, screw or be screwed. On trade, the left-wing populists sound like Trump.

The problem for the left [or for neoconservatives like Brooks] to be an effective advocate of policies promoting economic equality within the nation is the growing fanaticism for Open Borders.

The more America is opened up to immigration by the other seven billion people on Earth, the more the billionaires of America will prosper and the less the American people will enjoy high wages and low rents. Bernie Sanders had the right instincts in 2015 when he derided Open Borders as a way for the Koch Brothers get even richer. But by 2016, he shut up about that because he realized that the political hopes of the Democrats are so tied to a strategy of importing millions of ringers from abroad to demographically crush the GOP.

David Brooks is like some time-travelling medieval person who insists on explaining simple mechanical processes with demons who are not invisible (a common mistake) but simply very small.
    >Leftists may lose enthusiasm for big international deals.
    >Yes, although I would say they’re losing tolerance or patience, not enthusiasm. I don’t remember leftists being enthusiastic about NAFTA.
    >Of course, they’d better be enthusiastic, when the American Hugo Chavez shows up.
    >… what?
    >It’ll be as ugly as when that latter-day Streicher, Bernie Sanders, used nativist xenophobia against those hard-working immigrant Koch brothers.
    > … um …
    >Politicians have decided they don’t need thinkers any more.
    >Okay.
At least he doesn’t try to talk about the shape of the Earth.

You know about as much about the Medieval period as David Brooks knows about life in the non-rich real world around him.

    Off topic

Am I the only one who has noticed that David Reich looks an awful lot like Savante Paabo?
  2. While it is true that authoritarianism being a threat on both sides of the political landscape, a cursory overview of the people who make up rallies held by each side demonstrate, sadly, that the right wing of politics attracts a greater proportion of “low-information voters” who, by dint of their ignorance, are more easily swayed by demagogues and autocrats who trumpet the simple solutions they yearn for.

LIV's by definition don't attend political rallies. They don't read Lenny Pitts, either.

The difference between liberals and conservatives is scepticism and gullibility.

    Conservatives are sceptical

Liberals, especially blacks will believe anything.

OT Kid gets raided by the ATF after been reported as wearing a “Nazi” t-shirt.
    https://patch.com/illinois/vernonhills/guns-ammo-seized-illinois-teen-seen-wearing-neo-nazi-gear
He had “illegal” guns, but the basis of the complaint was still that he was seen wearing a politically incorrect t-shirt in a campus of Che shirts. The SPLC was relied on in the article and possibly by the ATF in defaming the group whose brand was printed on the shirt as “Nazi.” This follows the conviction of a white man who was attacked by a black man with a pipe at the Charlottesville police-confected riot.

  4. Somehow David Brooks is just a bit less than credible on the subject of tribalism.

Meanwhile, as California leads, the nation is sure to follow. But where?

Black economic success should increase upon reduced competition from immigrants. That success would translate on the margin into more employed, more income and tax revenues, lower social benefit costs, greater household formation, more community stability and less crime. Okay, that is a lot to pack into a burgeoning trend, but consider how that could add to a Black Magic Bullet aimed at the Dems.

A Kanye tweet here, a few supporting tweets or other communiqués elsewhere and the Blac Bloc could head toward no longer being the sure thing, take-for-granted voting bloc, at least on the male, eligible voter side as Steve mentioned recently. Greater economic stability and tangible human development in the community rather than more of the same Sharptonesque shakedowns would be a welcome relief.

It's sick an obvious solution it can never be allowed. Think... To go back to a 90/10 or 85/15 white/black split would so obviously help blacks.

But there's a 2% population group out there that would be a little less comfortable and we can't have that

The benefit that affirmative action provides to black women and a you black man most likely more than outweighs what integration does for blue-collar jobs . Hard to see blacks leaving the Democrat party to work more for less .

Anti-immigration activists are always saying blacks logically *should* oppose immigration for these sorts of reasons, but I've never thought the argument held water.

My impression is that today's black middle class is almost entirely a creation of government jobs and government pressure on the private sector like Affirmative Action.

Immigrants, at least first generation ones, rarely get government jobs, and they are also rarely have the white-color positions at big corporations heavily influenced by Affirmative Action. So they're not really competing with middle-class blacks.

Meanwhile, as the population grows due to immigration, more government jobs become necessary and big corporations sell more products. So I'd guess that middle-class blacks in those sectors generally benefit from immigration.

I doubt whether poor blacks see much of an impact one way or the other. Maybe they're pushed out of South-Central or Bed-Stuy to somewhere else, but those were pretty terrible places to live anyway. And since not too many of them have jobs, they're not really competing with immigrants.

Anyway, to the extent that black politicians listen to anyone except big corporate donors, it's probably the black middle class rather than totally disorganized poor blacks. So there's really no significant black constituency for an anti-immigration position.
    , @Anonymous
It's important to understand why blacks vote how they do and why they are a very monolithic voting bloc. It revolves around the Big Man in their community, who himself is a vassal of another Big Man, and so forth, until you get to a fairly small group of Big Big Men. These tend to 1) be chosen or at least heavily supported by nonblack interests with an agenda, and 2) to be in general agreement.

There are alternate Big Men that subsets of blacks follow , such as Calypso Louie Farrakhan, but they are left alone so long as their following stays manageable in size and they follow certain restrictions: they serve several purposes. If these conditions no longer hold true, they are removed in some way or another.

Genuinely independent blacks are statistically not very significant. They do exist and can be influential in 'corner conditions of the envelope' but are a minor consideration in any planning.

Kanye West is influential because he has media support. If he wandered too far off the reservation he would be displaced and replaced. There are a lot of other rappers out there and someone else would be the new Big Man, so to speak.

Something similar recently happened in Nashville. A large number of black voters in Nashville sided with many largely conservative and suburban voters to vote against and defeat a $9 billion mass transit plan proposed by Nashville’s recently resigned, very progressive, Democratic lady mayor and heavily promoted by many other progressives, hipsters, and also the chamber of commerce. Nashville’s black voters savvily recognized the proposed light rail would probably result in their displacement due to increasing housing costs related to gentrification. They also realized that many things they’ve been promised in the past never came to fruition.

Not long ago, most of the American left tended to think transnationally — partly because problems like climate change are global, partly because it’s hard to regulate a global economy nation by nation, partly because progressives used to be psychologically averse to nationalism.

Funny, but it seems ‘free trade’ is transnational too, and it allowed rapid industrialization of China and India that led to so much additional green house gases. Maybe the global environment wouldn’t have been so polluted if not for transnational global capitalism.

Sierra Club used to be more mindful of immigration’s impact on environment. No longer. It got bribed into welcoming more people into the West.

Also, as Ross Perot pointed out, when US companies remained IN the US, they had to adhere to environmental regulations. When they moved to Mexico, Vietnam, or China, not so much if at all. They could pollute all they wanted.

Tribalism is in the air, on the left as well as on the right.

As opposed to both parties saying WE LOVE ISRAEL AND WE HATE RUSSIA & IRAN BECAUSE JEWS HATE THEM?

Tribalism or nationalism is NOT a zero-sum game of ‘we get all, you get none’.
Maybe it is with Jews, and thus Brooks could be projecting his tribal supremacism onto others. After all, the Jewish way in the Middle East is ‘Jews get everything, Palestinians get nothing’. Or it’s ‘Israel can have nukes and randomly attack its neighbors and be showered with billions in aid… but Iran, a nation with no nukes, must be sanctioned to death.’ Brooks’ tribe practices that kind of zero-sum tribalism.

But most people in the US don’t. Their tribalism is ‘negotiative’. And most of American tribalism was always like this. Take NY. It has Italians, Jews, Irish, Poles, blacks, Germans, Greeks, and etc. They all had an ethnic sense, but they knew they had to get along with other groups. So, they negotiated. It was never about ‘We Italians get everything, and rest of yous get nothing’ or ‘We Irish take everything, and the rest of you starve.’

If any group tarnished the good name of negotiative triblaism, it was Jews because their agenda was ALL OF YOU MUST SERVE US. Jewish tribalism has been the most zero-sum.

For example, Greek Americans have Greek interests and use their political and economic power to sway US government to favor Greek interests. Turkish-Americans do the same. All groups do this. But Greeks don’t make ALL OF US favor Greek interests over our own interests. Greeks do their thing, Irish do their thing, Turkish-Americans do their thing, and etc. But Jews? All of us sing hosannas to Israel, all of us worship Shoah(even though most of us had NOTHING to do with it), and the hell with Palestinians. And if Jews hate Russia and Iran, all of us must hate them too.

Someone should tell Brooks that his people need to practice negotiative tribalism than zero-sum tribalism. Indeed, even Jewish anti-tribalism is really just (((anti-tribalism))). Jonathan (((Weisman))) let the cat out of the bag when he explained that Open Borders is wonderful because it is especially good for hegemony of Jewish global power. Basically, he’s admitting that gentile national sovereignty must be compromised to serve Jewish globalist hegemony.

Another thing. Identity politics of Right and Left are utterly different. On the Right, it’s about adherence to essential and real identity with history, roots, culture, and memory.
In contrast, leftist politics is about ideology than identity. Marxism is an idea in the mind. Now, classes do exist in society, but they are far less fixed than race, ethnicity, or culture. A rich Greek or poor Greek, a man is Greek. But if a poor man becomes a rich man, his class has changed. In India, caste and ethnicity is almost synonymous but not in the West.
Still, at least Marxism addressed real social evils of the dark side of capitalism. Today’s ‘leftism’ is a stupidass circus about how homos and trannies need to be worshiped(as proxy puppets of the Tribe). Some guy recently wrote in NYT that Marx was right, i.e. today’s SJW are still carrying the torch. No, if Marx was right, it is because capitalism did come to be dominated by disgusting oligarchic imperialists with no sense of limits or decency.

Also, much of leftist identity is really rightist. Black power, brown power, and etc are really forms of rightism. They just happen to be allied with white leftism. Likewise, Muslims in Europe are allied with secular leftists because the latter are more for Open Borders. Does that make Islam a ‘leftist’ ideology? No. It’s just about alliances… like Saudis are allied with the US.

Furthermore, leftism values identity only in terms of its ‘victim’ value. Unless an identity can invoke iconic victimhood, it has no value in the eyes of the Left.

In contrast, identity has value simply for its roots, substance, and history on the Right. Whether Swedes or Poles are a ‘victim’ group or not, the Right believes their identity has value as a repository of history, culture, and sense of larger shared community.

Leftist identity is purely negativist. So, if a group can claim victimhood, its identity matters. But if the group loses its victim credentials, its identity must go.

In contrast, rightist identity has value regardless of political fashions or perceptions. Thus, is far richer and more meaningful. It’s not identity as mere virtue-signaling.

Left needs to cross with the Right. And that is what Trump called for.

Left vs Right is the most toxic idea to come out of the French Revolution.

The proper way is Left and Right. That is the only intersectionality or convergence that really matters. Left without the Right is like a Crucifix with bar but no pole. Right without the Left is like a Crucifix with pole but no bar.

The radicals of the French Revolution failed because they were all leftist. Napoleon did much better by crossing left and right. FDR did this with New Deal. The saner part of Hitler did the same before he went nuts with imperialist war fever.

Nationalism is the best socialism. When the elites are compelled to think nationally, they feel an obligation to the people of the nation. If they think globally, they just dream of ‘new ____’ or spout of symbolic banalities about “it takes a village” without doing anything for anyone.
After all, a man who takes care of his own kids is a better man than a man who claims to love ALL kids but does nothing for any of them, including his own.

  8. Today in Trump’s America:

Restaurant owners are also worrying about increased immigration enforcement: Nearly 20 percent of workers are foreign-born…

Now, after years of benefiting from low-cost labor, many employers are starting to pay more. Fast-food wages began rising in 2014, and have increased faster than overall wages since. But at $10.93 an hour, the pay is still less than half the average for an hourly employee, pushing companies to offer more incentives — like dental insurance, sign-up bonuses and even travel reimbursement — to entice workers..

Tamra Kennedy, who owns nine Taco John’s franchises in the Midwest, started offering $100 as a bonus to new employees who reached 100 hours. She has started offering merit increases twice a year, and she pays all employees more than the minimum wage.

    • Replies: @Anon
Raising wages is good. Also, I wonder if there is a way that they could convey the impression that you are learning something useful. If you want to be the boss, it helps to have been the employee at some point. If you want to start a business, having worked for a business that is profitable and efficient and innovative helps.

I think at one point McDonald's had a good reputation as a place where you could get some really useful experience.

Maybe the fast food outlets should copy the military and hire smarter, well socialized kids not as "pirvates," but as some low level of supervisor, complete with a day of somewhat useful training (dealing with reverse delegation, maintaining a social distance with underlings, sw). Give them a title and an impressive list of job duties, even though they'd still mostly be flipping burgers.

I wonder if the necessity to pack your college application with impressive fake experiences is part of it.

On the other hand, this might end up being white kids supervising black kids, and could result infrequent social media blow-ups.

I wonder if the necessity to pack your college application with impressive fake experiences is part of the problem. Or do white kids avoid increasingly diverse environments? 20 percent illegals? Hmmm.
    , @anon
In high wage areas like the Seattle metro area, almost all fast food workers are immigrants, usually Mexican or Indian, who could barely speak a word of English, and rude as heck. I stopped eating fast food just because I got sick of their rude service.

Can anyone mention Israeli immigration policies in this debate?

  11. His turn-about on immigration proved that Bernie Sanders is devoid of integrity. His inability to stand up to two radical black women who took the microphone from him at one of his rallies shows that he doesn’t have the backbone to be an effective leader.

Politicians always make promises they can't keep on the campaign trail to appeal to their base. Trump knew his base wanted less immigration, so he promised less immigration, but he's really a liberal who wants more immigration, so when he got elected, he did absolutely nothing to cut down H1b and actually tried to fight for amnesty for DACA.

Bernie might just turn out to be the opposite. Bernie's base wanted open borders(or at least that's what he thought they wanted), so he promised amnesty and more immigration, but from old interviews, you could tell he did not want more immigration, so if he had gotten elected, he might just did the opposite and actually reduce immigration.

At present there are roughly 200 states and their corresponding sovereign territory on the planet. How many of these states have a European super-majority population?

In 50 years how many states will there be on the planet? And how many will have a European super-majority?

How many non-Euopean super-majority states have a foreign population residing within them that is beyond a couple percent of the total population?

    Bingo.

The second task would be to ensure economic security for all. This would involve raising the federal minimum wage to $15 per hour, providing universal basic income and having the federal government provide a paying job to all who want one.

I would disagree with this [Bernie Sanders] agenda on pragmatic policy grounds, but at least it would be humane. It’s a positive, universalist agenda that aims at social solidarity and national cohesion — we’re all in this together. It ain't very humane from my perspective to be pushed into minority status through mass immigration. F#%$ "humane". In the above we have three (((wolves))) discussing the merits of a plan vis-à-vis the concerns of a mixed group of sheep and non-sheep that involves taxing wealth from mostly sheep and giving it to mostly non-sheep from the perspective of humaneness to mostly non-sheep. The (((wolves))) have pushed to bring in non-sheep while doing everything in their power to reduce the numbers of sheep over time except for basically lining them up and shooting them.

I may be cynical but somehow the idea of humaneness to anyone seems to me just window dressing to discuss What's good for the (((wolves))). From the sheep perspective, it's high time we evaluated policy based on what's good for the sheep. And whether it is humane or not to a non-sheep should be judged in the context of... you guessed it... is it good for the sheep? And I think we stand to get a much more pro-sheep perspective from actual sheep.

  15. I suspect that many of the ‘leaders’ of the left in politics and academia understand perfectly well that importing millions of electoral ringers makes their supposed goal of greater economic equality impossible – but because it’s an effective way to obtain and keep political power they’ll keep flogging both issues. The ultimate goal is to rule, not to actually improve most people’s lives.

Bernie For President 2020 might be filing a take-down notice of this video. 2007 Bernie sounds like a more informed version of 2016 Trump, coming on Lou Dobbs prepared to give lots of stats and anecdotes about the H1B guest worker visa program.

When Lou Dobbs got kinda WNy about immigrants not respecting the traditions of America, Bernie just politely smiled, and rather than scream RACIST!!! went right back to his point about rising inequality, the decline of the middle class, and then said "I don't see why we need millions of people coming into this country as guest workers who will work for lower wages, and drive down wages lower than they really are."

Interestingly, while Bernie used the phrase "guest worker," he also said "millions and millions." The actual number of total legal guest workers in the United States I am pretty sure isn't "millions" plural, but closer to 1 million total. To me this means 2007 Bernie was actually arguing against mass immigration in general, which is "millions and millions," while using the "guest worker" tag to give him cover with the left.

Given how close the awful Hillary Clinton got to beating Trump, I don't think Bernie would have had much trouble running back to the right on immigration and at least partly neutralizing Trump's best issue in 2016, thereby beating him.

All in all, I am not sure how sincere Bernie is, now or then. But he does a heck of a job sounding sincere.

"Nativism!" and "War!" which no longer work. It would almost be possible to feel sorry for them, had they not gotten so many people killed.

It’s all part of their master plan. But with the help of the Alt Right, by 2033 America will be split up into different ethnic and/or racial enclaves and the power of Jews and their acolytes will be effectively neutered.

  24. The globalist left keeps griping about “right wing nationalism” but it never, ever addresses the entirely reasonable objections the right has to the worst aspects of globalization. Not only does it not address them, but usually instead it doubles down. Angela Merkel’s throwing the EU’s borders wide open to Syrian and Eritrean and Afghan and Somali refugees are just one example, and the Mediterranean boatlift operations, carrying hundreds of thousands of Africans from just miles off of Libyan shores, are another. But hands down the most outrageous of all doubling down was probably the throwing open of the borders by Bill Clinton and George W Bush just after the passage of California’s Prop 187. They knew that the people, if we were allowed a say, would object to their plans, and so they’ve been doing everything they can to replace us as quickly as possible.

I would call myself a social democrat. Social Democracy cannot work in a state without any shared sense of identity. Many of you are right wingers. We can disagree about what a nation states policies should be. We can agree (I hope) that we can keep the disagreament peaceful and fair if we do not try to win the debate by flooding countries with people who do not have any sense of loyalty to where they immigrate to.

Also by not running up unsustainable levels of public debt, so that the states freedom of action is limited by paying off interest payments.

One of the problems with socialism is it creates a large class of people who gain power and funding the worse the country is and are concentrated and vote as a bloc. Socialism is not long term compatible with democracy; you are going to have to toss the latter.

To get right down to brass tacks, I'm ultimately agnostic on pretty much everything other than White Survival. I have my preferences, but I'd take communism, national socialism, monarchism, theism, libertarianism, authoritarianism or pretty much anything in-between if it came packaged with White Survival.

Give me more than one option and all bets are off, though.

    , @Paleo Liberal
So I'm not the only lefty immigration restrictionist on this site.

Mass immigration and a welfare state are incompatible in the long term. You can have one of them, or neither of them.

Some of the right-wingers on this site want neither. I disagree, but at least they are intellectually consistent.

The neo-cons want massive immigration with no welfare state. Paul Ryan is notorious for trying to gut Social Security, which is one reason the Romney/Ryan ticket not only didn't carry Wisconsin, but lost to Obama in Rock County, Janesville, and Ryan's own precinct. Intellectually consistent in their desires to loot the country on behalf of the wealthy globalists.

I want a strong welfare state, but what I mean by that isn't necessarily what others mean by that. I realize it is incompatible with massive immigration. Wisconsin had a huge problem in the mid-late 20th Century when the welfare payments in Wisconsin were far more generous than the welfare payments in Illinois. So, a lot of people came north. This is probably why the black/white disparities are worse in Wisconsin than almost any other place in the country. It wasn't folks like the Winfrey or Robinson families moving north (though, to be fair, I do have an African American friend living in the nicest neighborhood in Madison. Wonderful family.) You folks on the right may disagree, but at least I am intellectually consistent.

The current trend on the left is massive immigration AND a welfare state. It didn't work in Milwaukee, and it didn't work in Malmo, Sweden.

Funny how monopoly profits disappear when the government subsidy disappears. Better paid seasonal workers would solve the problem.

BTW, how many of these seasonal foreign workers actually return home? Most of them probably stay, finding better-paying year-round work...

You would have a very hard time finding leftists opposed to international organizations that they largely control, like the UN and the International Criminal Court. Indeed, I would challenge David Brooks to find ONE example of a prominent American leftist saying something negative about the UN or ICC (outside perhaps of some limited criticism of the UN’s anti-Israel activities).

Bernie’s evolution on immigration has actually tracked the left fairly well. Opposition to mass migration was always a minority position on the left, but it did actually exist. When he was in the House Bernie was part of the about 20% of House Democrats who somewhat reliably voted against mass migration and even gave a few floor speeches against guest workers hurting wages. Then he schooled little Ezra Klein on his dumb advocacy for open borders in 2015. But by 2016 he was agreeing with Hillary that Obama was wrong to deport any non-criminal illegal aliens, and pledging along with her to stop all non-criminal deportations if elected.

What is the difference between the progressive left and communism? The line is getting more blurred by the day. In Seattle, the homeless problem is so bad that the city council now wants to impose a head tax on all businesses in Seattle to help pay for housing the homeless. Yesterday Amazon became the first to protest by suspending work on a new tower they were building downtown. Today, the left wing nut job city councilwoman Kshama Sawant, an Indian import, went down to the Amazon HQ with a group of her sign wielding minions to try to address the workers and gin up support. She was met by a group of angry Iron workers who gave her a taste of her own medicine by shouting her down! It was a beautiful sight to behold:

    https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/politics/seattle-councilmember-iron-workers-face-off-over-proposed-amazon-tax/

Seattle, in fact, WA state as a whole, is a perfect example of what happens when progressives take over. Democrats now control the house, the senate and the Governor’s mansion. Homeless problem is out of control in Seattle and is now spreading to the once conservative (but no more) East Side. Property taxes in King County went up by 20% in one year. Traffic is unbelievable. A 30 minute commute without traffic now can take up to 1.5 to 2 hrs. Yet all these progressives wants to do is find more ways to tax the people and businesses.

If a progressive like Bernie Sanders or Elizabeth Warren wins the next election, riots will break out all over the country because I can’t imagine the red states putting up with the crap that we in the Seattle area have to deal with from these idiot nut jobs.

The story about the Chinese organized and sponsored Asia Infrastructure Investment Bank--now with 80 members--to compete with the World Bank (aka International Bark for Reconstruction and Development) and the Asia Development Bank, is that those two international institutions are dominated by the US. And as dominated by the US, under Obama, no approvals were granted for fossil-fuel powered electric generating plants--in pursuance of the Green agenda.

So in one policy area, the global left (Obama) made their impact felt, and the Chinese took the initiative to fill the leadership void. That leadership seem to be working well towards their development of the new Silk Road connecting Asia to Europe.

Restaurant owners are also worrying about increased immigration enforcement: Nearly 20 percent of workers are foreign-born...

Raising wages is good. Also, I wonder if there is a way that they could convey the impression that you are learning something useful. If you want to be the boss, it helps to have been the employee at some point. If you want to start a business, having worked for a business that is profitable and efficient and innovative helps.

I think at one point McDonald’s had a good reputation as a place where you could get some really useful experience.

Maybe the fast food outlets should copy the military and hire smarter, well socialized kids not as “pirvates,” but as some low level of supervisor, complete with a day of somewhat useful training (dealing with reverse delegation, maintaining a social distance with underlings, sw). Give them a title and an impressive list of job duties, even though they’d still mostly be flipping burgers.

I wonder if the necessity to pack your college application with impressive fake experiences is part of it.

His turn-about on immigration proved that Bernie Sanders is devoid of integrity. His inability to stand up to two radical black women who took the microphone from him at one of his rallies shows that he doesn't have the backbone to be an effective leader.

The man is a sad joke, a schmendrick (to use a term with which he might be familiar).

Politicians always make promises they can’t keep on the campaign trail to appeal to their base. Trump knew his base wanted less immigration, so he promised less immigration, but he’s really a liberal who wants more immigration, so when he got elected, he did absolutely nothing to cut down H1b and actually tried to fight for amnesty for DACA.

Bernie might just turn out to be the opposite. Bernie’s base wanted open borders(or at least that’s what he thought they wanted), so he promised amnesty and more immigration, but from old interviews, you could tell he did not want more immigration, so if he had gotten elected, he might just did the opposite and actually reduce immigration.

Anti-immigration activists are always saying blacks logically *should* oppose immigration for these sorts of reasons, but I’ve never thought the argument held water.

My impression is that today’s black middle class is almost entirely a creation of government jobs and government pressure on the private sector like Affirmative Action.

Immigrants, at least first generation ones, rarely get government jobs, and they are also rarely have the white-color positions at big corporations heavily influenced by Affirmative Action. So they’re not really competing with middle-class blacks.

Meanwhile, as the population grows due to immigration, more government jobs become necessary and big corporations sell more products. So I’d guess that middle-class blacks in those sectors generally benefit from immigration.

I doubt whether poor blacks see much of an impact one way or the other. Maybe they’re pushed out of South-Central or Bed-Stuy to somewhere else, but those were pretty terrible places to live anyway. And since not too many of them have jobs, they’re not really competing with immigrants.

Anyway, to the extent that black politicians listen to anyone except big corporate donors, it’s probably the black middle class rather than totally disorganized poor blacks. So there’s really no significant black constituency for an anti-immigration position.

Polls show blacks do oppose mass immigration, and labor market data shows they suffer the most from it. As with whites, black politicians generally don't care, and until they start losing primaries that will remain the case. Chicago seems to be the only city with a critical mass of black anti-immigration activism. New York has plenty of blacks too, but the elite blacks there are overwhelmingly of immigrant origin themselves, while the largest origin for blacks in Chicago is Mississippi, as the great migration north largely followed a due north path.

Oh, I expect that all those sinecure positions will be continuing and that the current holders will do whatever they can to preserve that income. My focus is more regarding the lower end jobs (food service, transportation, and even some manufacturing given the proximity of South Central to the I-5 corridor and South Bay industrial areas), and how those have changed over the years (although no traction in the high tech businesses). Los Angeles provides a great case study via the demographic work of William Frey and the UCLA economic forecast people. (Eastern cities will have their own patterns of dysfunction and displacement like Chicago out to Milwaukee or downstate or Iowa).

Hispanics undercut blacks and pushed them out of South Central (jobs, gangs, other influences) to the Inland Empire (esp. San Bernardino) and the high desert (e.g., Barstow and Victorville). Similar influences encouraged poor whites to move out of LA to lower cost states (NV, AZ, OR for example). Not much of a typical constituency in the black community in any event, and not much money to extract for campaign contributions, but enough evidence of real or potential stability to reduce the more troubling aspects of that community.

I'd expect Trump and others in the RNC to scrap for whatever voted they can get and to exploit any publicity or media spectacle events to influence and jump-start some trends. Overall, that hope for some change in fortunes for blacks is a bit of a Unicorn but given the potential to tweak the Dems and to address the immigrant action issues among the Trump base while maybe helping cities seems very enticing and even a type of low-hanging fruit.

It 's more elemental than that.
It's 'stick it to whitey' time.
    , @Jake
Correct. Advocates of Big Government (whether for Leftist Welfare or Imperialist Adventuring, and they do go together) give blacks major payoffs of Government jobs (including academia). Blacks know that. so they back the system that gave the jobs.

Plus, blacks know that virtually all of the stuff they are given by the system comes at the expense of white Gentiles, and they love that.
    , @Yak-15
There is a lot of truth to this statement but it’s incomplete and lacks the perspective of someone seeing current progress in higher-end careers. Many immigrants coming to America are immigrants as high skill/IQ (relatively) from Africa. They are increasingly taking the slots of African Americans.

I work in a math-oriented career field and have flirted with pursuing advanced degrees. I cannot quantify the relationship exactly, but about half the blacks I meet (rare they are) have foreign names.

This is pressing on blacks at the higher ends and will manifest itself more concretely as we experience more elite black immigration from west Africa.

Mid-level blacks are not astute to this reality, yet. But they will get it soon enough. The slave-merchants are taking the jobs of the slaves.
    , @International Jew
Those government jobs are going to dry up wherever blacks become outnumbered by Hispanics (those who can vote, anyway). And as English-Spanish bilingualism becomes a requirement in more and more places, that's going to shut out yet more blacks (except the very smartest ones).

But as convinced as I am that immigration is bad for the blacks, I'm even surer that they're too angry and stupid to act on it at the polls.

And maybe that's a good thing. If the GOP ever sees real potential in the black vote, we'll have both parties pandering to the anti-law-enforcement agenda, on Section 8, and on affirmative action.

I'm for the GOP trying to win with the Sailer strategy. We'll get the votes of those blacks who care about the common interests of Americans. The others can go to hell.

If they can’t damage /pol/ with “incel”(really just a neologism for virgin) then they’ve become truly powerless. The media and political establishment have thrown literally everything at /pol/ and if they can’t do any damage with the most damaging association possible (sexual failure) then they’re powerless for all to see. Metaphorically, they’ve climbed all the way to the top of the hyperbole tree, only to find at the top that it’s really a cliff with no way down. Just how they’ll react when they realise that they’ve hit the limits of soft power is another question – probably the predictable old “double down in blind rage until they lose everything they stole from us” song and dance that any student of history is aware of.

Even though they inceasingly start to fail on the propaganda side, they’re still in key positions in society and around the world to move on with their agenda whenever there is support for it or not. At least until they’re physically removed.

They’re in key positions and their messages are falling flat. I never thought I’d see the day where humor is completely absent in a large swath of television primetime & late shows just to allow for more ideological narrative pushing.

The black middle class will not be decimated if Affirmative Action goes away. In fact, it would grow. There is a big problem now with academic mismatch for blacks in our colleges due to AA. Blacks who would've been doctors, engineers or other professionals had they attended a lower tier school where their SATs are in the 75th percentile end up majoring in Grievance Studies or other soft majors because AA lured them into colleges where they are at the 25th percentile, where they found themselves out competed by smarter white and asian kids. Blacks as a group drop out of engineering at the highest rate in elite schools, and the same happens at each tier down.

With the soft majors the only jobs they could get end up being government jobs. Without AA there will be a lot more black professionals, more than making up for loss of government jobs, and better paid.

Bernie For President 2020 might be filing a take-down notice of this video. 2007 Bernie sounds like a more informed version of 2016 Trump, coming on Lou Dobbs prepared to give lots of stats and anecdotes about the H1B guest worker visa program.

When Lou Dobbs got kinda WNy about immigrants not respecting the traditions of America, Bernie just politely smiled, and rather than scream RACIST!!! went right back to his point about rising inequality, the decline of the middle class, and then said “I don’t see why we need millions of people coming into this country as guest workers who will work for lower wages, and drive down wages lower than they really are.”

Interestingly, while Bernie used the phrase “guest worker,” he also said “millions and millions.” The actual number of total legal guest workers in the United States I am pretty sure isn’t “millions” plural, but closer to 1 million total. To me this means 2007 Bernie was actually arguing against mass immigration in general, which is “millions and millions,” while using the “guest worker” tag to give him cover with the left.

Given how close the awful Hillary Clinton got to beating Trump, I don’t think Bernie would have had much trouble running back to the right on immigration and at least partly neutralizing Trump’s best issue in 2016, thereby beating him.

All in all, I am not sure how sincere Bernie is, now or then. But he does a heck of a job sounding sincere.

The benefit that affirmative action provides to black women and a you black man most likely more than outweighs what integration does for blue-collar jobs . Hard to see blacks leaving the Democrat party to work more for less .

    Zero Sum:

It would be, as Sheri Berman writes in Dissent, enchanted with a radical idealism.

It ain’t very humane from my perspective to be pushed into minority status through mass immigration. F#%$ “humane”.

I may be cynical but somehow the idea of humaneness to anyone seems to me just window dressing to discuss What’s good for the (((wolves))). From the sheep perspective, it’s high time we evaluated policy based on what’s good for the sheep. And whether it is humane or not to a non-sheep should be judged in the context of… you guessed it… is it good for the sheep? And I think we stand to get a much more pro-sheep perspective from actual sheep.

It’s important to understand why blacks vote how they do and why they are a very monolithic voting bloc.

They do exist and can be influential in ‘corner conditions of the envelope’ but are a minor consideration in any planning.

Kanye West is influential because he has media support. If he wandered too far off the reservation he would be displaced and replaced. There are a lot of other rappers out there and someone else would be the new Big Man, so to speak.

  70. @AKAHorace
What I like about this site is that people who come to the same conclusions about mass immigration from both the left and the right can talk to each other without hating each other.

But surely,Steve, it’s a fallacy – only ‘believed’ by the *really* unintelligent e.g. The Economist editorial board, Tony Blair etc – that uncontrolled, massive, third world immigration financially ‘benefits’ the rich.

The fact is that in the USA, at least, wages for grunt labor have been ground down so far that they are of merely no consequence to the capitalist classes. Mere petty cash triviality. No more than the wife’s dog food bill for the bichon frise.

On they other hand, the hard true economic analysis of the late, great Peter Schaeffer proves beyond a shadow of doubt that the importation of third world grunt labor is a *MASSIVE* economic and fiscal liability to the USA.

There is only one class of nett taxpayer in the USA and they, of course, are the rich – and guess who’s going to pay the Schaeffer bill?

Unfortunately for the rich, the grunts take an enormous amount of their tax money, but have equality of voting with them. And there’s a lot more of them than there are the rich.

And guess who they are going to vote for? Tax cutters?

It ‘s more elemental than that.
It’s ‘stick it to whitey’ time.

Left-wing hostility toward European Union-type multilateral organizations is at record highs.

Only in the sense that 15 degrees on Christmas in Nome would be a "record high." The specific cases where leftists are against international orgs are generally those that are corporate elite dominated. The EU is increasingly one of them, TPP would have been another, having a lot to do with forcing American intellectual property law onto poor countries, and also allowing multinational corporations to do things like challenge tobacco advertising regulations in a special multinational undemocratic court without elected judges and without any jury.

You would have a very hard time finding leftists opposed to international organizations that they largely control, like the UN and the International Criminal Court. Indeed, I would challenge David Brooks to find ONE example of a prominent American leftist saying something negative about the UN or ICC (outside perhaps of some limited criticism of the UN's anti-Israel activities).

Bernie's evolution on immigration has actually tracked the left fairly well.

Now in 2018 we are seeing a large number of Democrats running for office saying they want to eliminate ICE entirely! There are also attacks on ICE officers are fascist stormtroopers.

But by 2016 he was agreeing with Hillary that Obama was wrong to deport any non-criminal illegal aliens

  77. This was an interesting column, especially for Brooks. I think he’s right, for the most part, about the nature of the Left, being cultural Marxist instead of plain old Marxist. There’s at least two problems with it, though, that I see:

    1. The thing Steve highlighted. The idea that Bernie could have a momentary spasm against open borders does not represent the mind of the Left. The Left, of course, is heading in the opposite direction. It’s electoral interest and cultural interest are strongly aligned toward more immigration. The expression of xenophobia on the Left is antagonism to normie America.

    2. Fundamentally, this expression of the Left is substantially weaker than Brooks is supposing. There’s a lot of Americans who aren’t enamored of Trump, or Republicans, or the alt-right, or whatever they take “our” side to be who won’t go for this, and for that matter are substantially afraid of this.

The danger isn’t that this pov will “win”, it’s that it will hang around and pollute everything else, which is basically what’s going on now.

  78. On the right, tribalism brings us the ethnic authoritarianism of Donald Trump

This is 180 degrees from the truth. It is a disgusting slur. Brooks might as well lament the aggressive imperialism of Ron Paul.

There was nothing ethnic nor authoritarian about Trump’s campaign or his Presidency.

How on earth does Brooks justify writing such a statement?

  80. We have to grant that Brooks has a very subtle sense of humor:

You can see authoritarianism entering the left through two avenues.

Because, you see, there isn’t really any authoritarianism that is intrinsic to the Left! Like, the whole program of the Left has never, ever been: “You participate in (and pay) for our Grand Vision of the Future or we will fine you or jail you.” (Or, in less advanced countries: “We’ll send you to the Gulag or just shoot you.”)

No, never! No, the Left has never had even a smidgeon of authoritarianism until 2018 when Leftists were infected by that evil authoritarian Trump!

Bernie Sanders moved to Vermont to avoid having to live around Blacks and other non-Whites.

Bernie Sanders is a Jew who loves to live around the Anglo-Celtic people in Vermont. Bernie Sanders is the type of Jew who shows no gratitude to the European Christian ancestral core of the United States for allowing his Jew people to infiltrate America. Bernie Sanders sings we all came to loot America along with Paul Simon.

I would rhetorically eviscerate Bernie Sanders in a 4 hour debate on mass immigration, globalization, multiculturalism and American national identity.

I seem angry with Bernie Sanders because he once had a trade unionist position on the wage-reducing effects of mass immigration, but he changed his position to appease the open borders mass immigration supporting elements in the Democrat Party. Bernie Sanders was my Sam Gompers trade unionist Jew hero when he bashed the Koch boys for pushing wage-reducing mass immigration.

  92. I call myself a Paleo Liberal.

    Here is a quick explanation.

I do not agree with Bernie Sanders on all issues. What I can say is the Bernie Sanders of a few years ago was at least in the same ballpark.

Another way to put it. For those of you who are familiar with the politics of Wisconsin, I am pretty much the opposite of Paul Ryan.

I am a nationalist. Even though I am a member of an Indian tribe, I am NOT a tribalist. I want what is best for myself, my family and my kind of people, but what I want the most is what is best for the nation.

I am NOT a globalist. Globalism has its place, in moderation. As long as globalism is done with the interests of the US first, rather than the interests of the big money donors. Having a trade situation where China puts huge tariffs on American goods while the US doesn’t do the same for China is part of what has led to a major trade imbalance. I was never a fan of Reagan, but I agreed with him when he forced the Japanese auto makers to limit their imports into the US. They reacted by opening plants in the US. These days a Toyota is more of an American car company than Chrysler.

I am miles to the left of many of the people who post here.

What I have in common with most of the people who post here is a desire to put the needs of American workers ahead of the desires of the big-money globalists.

These days both liberalism and conservatism have, to a large extent, been taken over by special interests.

Some of the things I believe, and remember, not long ago ALL of these were very common left-wing ideas:

    1. Our trade policies should put American workers ahead of globalists.
    2. Our immigration policies should put American workers ahead of the desires of the cheap-labor lobby.
    3. Our immigration policies should put our environment ahead of foreigners wanting their “American dream” — which often is just grabbing the money without any loyalty to our country.
    4. Our military policies should put American interests ahead of globalism. A Republic rather than an Empire.

There were times when ALL of those were common on the left.
    1. Ralph Nader and Bernie Sanders opposed NAFTA.
    2. Cesar Chavez, Barbara Jordan, Bernie Sanders, and many others.
    3. Gaylord Nelson wanted to pretty much end immigration to save the environment.
    4. Remember the anti-Vietnam War protests? At one point John Kerry was the leader of the VVAW, which was certainly anti-Imperialist.

The globalist left keeps griping about "right wing nationalism" but it never, ever addresses the entirely reasonable objections the right has to the worst aspects of globalization. Not only does it not address them, but usually instead it doubles down. Angela Merkel's throwing the EU's borders wide open to Syrian and Eritrean and Afghan and Somali refugees are just one example, and the Mediterranean boatlift operations, carrying hundreds of thousands of Africans from just miles off of Libyan shores, are another. But hands down the most outrageous of all doubling down was probably the throwing open of the borders by Bill Clinton and George W Bush just after the passage of California's Prop 187. They knew that the people, if we were allowed a say, would object to their plans, and so they've been doing everything they can to replace us as quickly as possible.

The globalist left keeps griping about “right wing nationalism”

Funny how monopoly profits disappear when the government subsidy disappears. Better paid seasonal workers would solve the problem.

I always viewed leftist attacks on the WTO, G8, and even Wall Street as "Move aside, old boss. We can do what you do better." They're definitely not opposed to internationalism. They just think the current internationlists are corrupt, maybe fighting a rearguard action for capitalism against Progress.

Like anarchism in the Old days, which wasn't about anarchy but socialism. (Socialism being of course always gibsmedat combined with skull-cracking.)

The story about the Chinese organized and sponsored Asia Infrastructure Investment Bank–now with 80 members–to compete with the World Bank (aka International Bark for Reconstruction and Development) and the Asia Development Bank, is that those two international institutions are dominated by the US. And as dominated by the US, under Obama, no approvals were granted for fossil-fuel powered electric generating plants–in pursuance of the Green agenda.

So in one policy area, the global left (Obama) made their impact felt, and the Chinese took the initiative to fill the leadership void. That leadership seem to be working well towards their development of the new Silk Road connecting Asia to Europe.

Mass immigration and a welfare state are incompatible in the long term. You can have one of them, or neither of them.

Some of the right-wingers on this site want neither. I disagree, but at least they are intellectually consistent.

The neo-cons want massive immigration with no welfare state. Paul Ryan is notorious for trying to gut Social Security, which is one reason the Romney/Ryan ticket not only didn’t carry Wisconsin, but lost to Obama in Rock County, Janesville, and Ryan’s own precinct. Intellectually consistent in their desires to loot the country on behalf of the wealthy globalists.

I want a strong welfare state, but what I mean by that isn’t necessarily what others mean by that. It wasn’t folks like the Winfrey or Robinson families moving north (though, to be fair, I do have an African American friend living in the nicest neighborhood in Madison. Wonderful family.) You folks on the right may disagree, but at least I am intellectually consistent.

The current trend on the left is massive immigration AND a welfare state. It didn’t work in Milwaukee, and it didn’t work in Malmo, Sweden.

Incels? Soyboys that can't find any lovin'? What's to be said? We were all virgins once.

Intimate sexual relations is not an entitlement. It's akin to self-esteem--it's an outcome-based activity, an earned accomplishment, not a pat on the back and an "atta boy" with a trophy for showing up in life.

There’s no end to the list of entitlements in current year society…but not for white betas. They’re going to get nothing, and they’d better just shut up and pay taxes.

  118. We need to abandon the identity politics of the Left and focus on economic issues. Sure deficits and debt are ballooning, but tax cuts for the Rich are economically sound. Don’t make me call you names and belittle your intelligence for wanting to have things I disagree with simply on self-motivated issues. We need cheap labor and lower taxes. Crime is down in my gated community. I don’t need a wall on the border. I have one on my house and don’t plan on letting you spend any taxes building another one. Now focus on economic issues and stop identifying as White.

Those government jobs are going to dry up wherever blacks become outnumbered by Hispanics (those who can vote, anyway). And as English-Spanish bilingualism becomes a requirement in more and more places, that’s going to shut out yet more blacks (except the very smartest ones).

But as convinced as I am that immigration is bad for the blacks, I’m even surer that they’re too angry and stupid to act on it at the polls.

And maybe that’s a good thing. If the GOP ever sees real potential in the black vote, we’ll have both parties pandering to the anti-law-enforcement agenda, on Section 8, and on affirmative action.

I’m for the GOP trying to win with the Sailer strategy. We’ll get the votes of those blacks who care about the common interests of Americans. The others can go to hell.

  120. As long as the Democrats were turfing out white working class types and soon, white elites, there was no problem with the remaining ethnic / racial / sexual coalition members. But they are running out of whites so it is going to become a game of musical chairs for the remaining identity groups to see which one gets the kiss of death next. My predictions are as follows:

    * Once the flag of “PALESTINE” is hoisted on the left like what is happening in Europe, a certain (((2%))) of the population will go from having sway in two parties to being a bunch of rich homeless wanderers who won’t fit in either. Worse, Asians will crowd Jews out in almost every field and the charm will be gone. They will disappear demographically and there won’t be replacements.

    * Latinos will be the backbone of the left. California and Texas will / are become brown states and they will wield political power well beyond their economic clout. Everybody will hate them and nobody will respect them.

    * Blacks will stay a majority Democrat but when the money runs out they will be at the throats of their friends. They and the Native Americans who were previously the pet minorities, will continue to be the most American of the coalition but the bottom of the shit heap.

*Sexual politics will continue to become second fiddle to racial politics and feminists and gays will be forced to choose if they want to continue to be ruled by Muslims / Black Panthers / and Reconquestas. By then it will be too late. They will come home but not as prodigal daughters.

We have to grant that Brooks has a very subtle sense of humor:

You can see authoritarianism entering the left through two avenues.

Because, you see, there isn't really any authoritarianism that is intrinsic to the Left! Like, the whole program of the Left has never, ever been: "You participate in (and pay) for our Grand Vision of the Future or we will fine you or jail you." (Or, in less advanced countries: "We'll send you to the Gulag or just shoot you.")

No, never! No, the Left has never had even a smidgeon of authoritarianism until 2018 when Leftists were infected by that evil authoritarian Trump!

And, if you deny that, we will just airbrush you out of the Great Soviet Encyclopedia, just like we did to that anti-Bolshevik, fascist Trotsky.

He means Authoritarian as per The Authoritarian Personality, the book that KMac devotes quite a few pages to.

Are you saying there are phenotypically manifesting traits indicating the ability to study the manifestation of phenotype?

(They both look ectomorphic, which Heartiste recently noted seems to correlate with genius)

These foriegn invaders will put white-hating leftists into power and those leftists will gut the First and Second amendments. But at least we’ll have low prices on crab meat (until overpopulation drives them up) and that’s much better than freedom.

Bottom line, we have to be tolerant of those who are more or less on the same side of us on mass immigration.

Those who are not against us are with us.

The most momentous political change in the past half century has been the almost complete destruction of the Left.

Identity politics and open borders are right-wing ideologies.
