From the Washington Post:

More people were murdered last year than in 2014, and no one’s sure why
By Max Ehrenfreund and Denise Lu
Jan. 27, 2016

The number of homicides in the country’s 50 largest cities rose nearly 17 percent last year, the greatest increase in lethal violence in a quarter century.

A Wonkblog analysis of preliminary crime data found that about 770 more people were killed in major cities last year than the year before, the worst annual change since 1990.

The killings increased as some law enforcement officials and conservative commentators were warning that violent crime was on the rise amid a climate of hostility toward police. They said protests and intense scrutiny of officers who used lethal force had caused officers to become disengaged from their jobs, making streets more dangerous. Some have called it the “Ferguson effect,” after the St. Louis suburb in which Michael Brown Jr. was shot and killed by a police officer in 2014.

Alternatively, the anti-cop / anti-white agitation could be stimulating blacks to shoot each other out of what Keynes called “animal spirits.” Or maybe something is going on in the drug trade. Perhaps heroin is spreading from the white hinterlands to the black inner cities? (I’m not at all in touch with what’s going down on the streets. For that matter, has anybody said “What’s going down on the streets” since a 1970s cop show?)

Keep in mind that St. Louis, where the Ferguson Effect (whatever it’s cause) was very large in the first half of 2015, isn’t in these stats because it’s not one of the top 50 cities in the country.

A closer look at the figures, however, suggests no single explanation for the increases and reveals no clear pattern among those cities that experienced the most horrific violence.

Several cities that recorded the largest increases in homicides — Nashville and Washington, D.C., for instance — had no widely publicized, racially charged killings by police. Many other big cities recorded modest increases or even declines in the number of homicides, with no deviation from the pattern of recent years.

13 cities had fewer homicides in 2015 than in 2014

36 cities had more homicides in 2015 than in 2014

The worst increase in percent terms was in Cleveland (+91%, Tamir Rice). Baltimore (Freddie Gray) was up 59%. St. Louis (Michael Brown), which is too small to make the 50 biggest city list, increased from 73 in 2003 to 159 in 2014 to 188 in 2015.

A general pattern was that increases in homicides, especially in absolute number terms, tended to be larger in cities with large black populations than in cities with large Hispanic populations. For example, the Post provided this graphic of California and Texas:

Screenshot 2016-01-28 20.46.59

Also, Hispanic cities have smaller numbers of murders per capita than black cities, so their data can be noisier from year to year just from smaller sample sizes. In contrast, Baltimore had 346 homicides last year, up 59% from 204, which is a pretty big sample size. In contrast, Denver’s homicide rate grew 65%, even faster than Baltimore’s, but Denver still only had 51 homicides in 2015. So, it’s not clear how significant Denver’s change from 2014 to 2015 was.

So, something seems to have gotten black slum dwellers agitated enough to kill each other in considerable numbers. Perhaps it’s all the agitation by black protestors working hand in glove with the Administration, the media, and the NGOs? That’s happened before, back in the 1960s. But the 1960s were a long time ago, so a lot of hard-earned lessons have been forgotten.

  5. Whites cannot speak the truth. And yellows(like Denis Lu) can’t either cuz they follow PC that is religion of the land.

PC has filled whites with compulsive-obsessive disorder of having to cleanse themselves incessantly and forever because the blood of ‘white guilt’ can never be washed away.

Whites are like Lady MacBeth who can never wash away the blood.

    https://youtu.be/w0LrdOa7uZQ?t=1h59m47s

Ironically, by trying to cleanse the world of imaginary everlasting ‘white guilt’, PC is only making the world a more dangerous place with REAL dangers.

‘White guilt’ means whites better shut up about bad Jewish behavior.
So, the economy is shaken to the core. Middle East is in flames. Tensions rise with Russia over whatever-Jews-cook-up-next-to-subvert-Putin.

‘White guilt’ means whites better shut up about bad black behavior.
So, blacks get more out of control and kill each other and others.

‘White guilt’ means whites better shut up about non-white invaders.
So, Europe turns crazier with all those migrants and US is becoming more divided with diversity.

PC makes whites obsess about imaginary guilt while the real world is made all the worse by PC policies.

  6. If this is the new trend, gentrification will end soon. I just Googled for “White Flight 2.0″ – it’s been used already, though not in this context, at least not among the top hits.

The amount of money that’s gone into gentrification in NYC is stunning. There are so many luxury buildings under construction now. For all of that to go to waste…

  8. Too many violent people, not enough Darwin.

Instead of being killed or eradicated some way or another, people with violent, criminal genes are free to breed with each other, and they end up having more than 2.0 kids, all of whom are supported by the state. Peaceful blacks who work a real job simply can’t afford to raise as many kids as a welfare recipient can. This means that over time, violent genes are steadily increasing throughout the black population like cancer, while the genes of less violent blacks are decreasing. Circumstance (and liberals) are breeding a race of super-violent sociopaths with the exactitude of horse- or dog-breeders trying to fix certain traits in a bloodline.

  9. It’s interesting to compare Chicago with Toronto, since both are Great Lakes cities with remarkably similar populations within city limits (Chicago being somewhere around 2.75 million people; Toronto somewhat above 2.8). Both were industrial powerhouses earlier in the 20th century, and both suffered from the decline of those trades before picking back up later on.

Chicago’s murders shot up from 432 in 2014 to 488 in 2015. Toronto’s total dipped slightly from 57 in 2014 to 56 in 2015. At 2.0 murders per 100,000 people, Toronto’s rate was roughly half of NYC’s rate, roughly a ninth of Chicago’s rate, less than half the US national average of 4.5 (for 2014 – not 2015 – so that’s definitely going up) , was lower than the 2014 state average of Utah, and was the same as the state averages of Oregon and Idaho.

In a sense, a city like Toronto is an example of what American cities might be like without certain unenviable historical burdens.

  11. The quality of city limit statistics is inherently lower than the quality of metropolitan area statistics. City limits are arbitrary. It means almost nothing to write that Jacksonville is the most populous city in Florida. It means a lot to write that Jacksonville is the sixth most populous metropolitan area in Florida.

However, he and his friends feel quite safe. He says the increase in murders is all gang-related and has to do with gentrification causing gangs to encroach on each others’ territories. Apparently, if you’re a regular Joe who’s not interested in Mary Jane, you can still walk the streets without worry.

A man on the air noted that St. Louis has also lost its airline (TWA), its airport hub, its most important corporate headquarters (Anheuser-Busch), and its self-esteem. It’s a “branch office” city now, he said.

  27. For Austin, the decrease in murders can probably be attributed to the dismantling of the traditional black ghetto on the east side. They’re being spread out thin across the city and suburbs as their old neighborhood gentrifies; and they were never terribly numerous here to begin with. Google “black population Austin” to have a laugh at all the libtard handwringing surrounding the matter.

Addtionally, as the population here grows feverishly, for every Mexican who rolls into town, at least another educated White does too, which works to offset the former’s pathologies to some degree.

By the way Steve, anyone ever tell you that you bear an uncanny resemblance to Doug Stanhope?

Consider this strictly: Do not underestimate what gang color demonstrations on cable news every night does to a gang member’s psyche. It is not too much to say that is what they live for, certainly that is what makes the next ones know what they want to be, when idols are on screen just flexing, like they were on Fox News for several weeks (months?). Can perception spike reality 17%? Yes it can. This is not what black anger looks like its what black pride looks like. That’s from someone who loves black people by the way. The media needs to learn to handle these circumstances more delicately, more Maturely.

Credit has been given to more effective policing with federal support, a housecleaning of the corrupt county prosecutor’s office, shall-issue concealed carry laws, higher mortality rates for gangbanger killers, and one or two other items. Don’t know about uptick from 2014 to 2015, or Ferguson effect.

Now, if they’d display the same tentative nonjudgmental attitude towards other stuff….”Unarmed men shot by cops tend to be disproportionately black but no one is sure why”…”Traffic stop targets are disproportionately black but, and we wish to emphasize this, NO ONE IS SURE WHY”

It’s fine to caricature your opponents but liberals can’t afford to treat minorities *or* cops as opponents. Their constituents care about reducing racism as well as effective policing. If you scream “cops are racist because STATISTICS!” one year, it’s difficult to denounce people as alarmist when they scream “crime is out of control because STATISTICS!”

Given the forum, it’s not hard to guess what you are implying here. While the massive influx of blacks during the “great migration” didn’t help Flint in the long run, one would be remiss to neglect to note the low quality of many of the Southern whites who migrated to Flint during the middle of the last century, many of whose descendents still reside in the city and act largely indistinguishable from the ghetto black population. Trust me when I say that spending time in the east side of Flint will make even the most ardent pro-white advocate do some real soul searching.

So far this year Chicago has had 47 homicides, 45 by gun, and 221 gunshot woundings (don’t know how many non-fatal stabbings or serious assaults with blunt instruments). This will increase a bit since January is not yet over and the weekend is starting. About a quarter of it is Hispanic the rest black with perhaps one white in the mix. There’s been a number of police shootings that’ve created the usual ruckus and provided fodder for the professional demonstrators. The police used to be able to terrorize the criminal class using their own discretion. Now with everything on camera that’s over with. With people like the Baltimore mayor and Holder calling the shots those inclined towards criminality feel free to do whatever they please and aren’t afraid of any consequences. One look at the saggy-pants crowd and it’s obvious they’re a separate breed who are unemployable, mentally and psychologically. Look at all the blacks in the Chicago public school system who are in Special Ed for being mentally below par. They’re all on SSI for disability and all of them will go on to have children, the women as single parents on welfare, the men as baby daddy types who go in and out of jail. It’s the next generation of the underclass.

  44. Actually, Flint is about 50% black and 40% white, although media coverage that mostly features black faces might leave you with a different impression. The liberal narrative, you know.

The full-size infrastructure is a huge burden and nobody wants to confront the two reasonable approaches, as noted below.

I’d answer my own question by saying that Flint has too many problems that are too new and too complicated to be solved by its cognitively challenged population. Frankly, I think that the population of Flint should be moved somewhere else, and the entire city should be either bulldozed and covered over and abandoned for human use, or it should be declared a Superfund site and remediated at a cost of many $billions.

In the meantime, we learn that the state government concluded that the water was unsafe at least ten months before the public was told, and even supplied bottle water for its own employees in Flint. SMH…

  48. OT – how does this fit with the oft-repeated mantra that Israeli intelligence steals US intelligence? Could this be kept secret?

    http://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/jan/29/snowden-files-us-uk-spied-feeds-israeli-drones-jets

A joint UK-US intelligence programme has been spying on electronic feeds – including video – from Israel’s military drones and jet fighters going back to 1998.

In a potentially embarrassing disclosure for Israel, which prides itself on its technical capabilities, a new release from material held by the former NSA contractor Edward Snowden has revealed that UK and US intelligence officials have been regularly accessing Israeli cockpit cameras even in the midst of operations in Gaza and Lebanon.

Codenamed Anarchist, the programme was revealed by the Intercept, a US website.

The revelation – while played down by Israeli defence sources – has demonstrated again the level of surveillance aimed at Israel by countries usually regarded as friendly.

The drone feeds were reportedly hacked using freely available software similar to that used to access subscriber-only TV channels, the report said.

According to the Intercept, the surveillance operation is run from GCHQ in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, and the actual surveillance undertaken from a UK base in Cyprus.

  49. “Liberals, both black & white, don’t believe blacks can do much on their own.”

    I agree with that.

The problem in Flint is that the white, male governor of Michigan rightly concluded that the city of Flint couldn’t solve its own problems (good!) but put moron friends/cronies in charge who apparently screwed up badly at several key points (bad!).

But you’re right. If Governor Snyder had done nothing, and this problem happened, the state of Michigan would still be on the hook for solving the problem. That’s what’s so dangerous about laws that allow the state to put in an emergency manager. If you appoint a manager and he fails, you’re at fault. If the situation goes bad and you could have appointed a manager and you didn’t, it’s also your fault. Damned if you do…

Also of note: The national media have not yet caught on to the fact that the same guy who apparently screwed up in Flint has been put in charge of a very similar set of problems in the Detroit public schools. Hopefully, Governor Snyder is reviewing that decision…

  52. What concerns me is that states like Colorado and Oregon may see their violent crime increase. Drugs are one of the few ways the untalented, dumb, and ruthless can make a living. Pot legalization may lure blacks to these places much the same way Henry Ford’s assembly line jobs drew blacks to Detroit in the 1920s. With a flood of violent blacks pouring into these states, both may end up going to utter hell.

So it looks like legalization, which is essentially a white effect to rig the pot trade so they don’t have to buy from those awful, awful, declasse blacks anymore, may backfire.

  53. That’s been my prediction. Watch for some change in the style of Hipsterdom towards a more bucolic/small town aesthetic as preparatory to abandoning urban spaces. It might even be wrapped up in whole foods localism, hands in the dirt ethos, rejecting careerism in favor of beekeeping or vegetable growing, and so on.

I grew up in inner city Philadelphia during the 70s-80s-90s urban crimewave (my parents’ first house was in a neighborhood which some people would put inside of North Philadelphia). I saw first hand the abusive/pernicious use of Section 8 and white flight.

Then, in the 2000s I watched in amazement as suburban raised kids (many of whose parents fled cities before their births to escape crime and urban decay) moved into cities including Philadelphia in a wave of gentrification. I recall thinking that they had the affect of white lab rabbits about to be released into the wild. There have, of course, been incidents of vibrancy which have occurred, usually on the leading edges of the Hipster wave. But thus far they’ve been somewhat muted in media coverage and wrapped in levels of euphemism and misdirection. But there gets to be a point where the crime hits home – whether someone gets a sudden dose of vibrancy in an area and at a time when you frequent, or someone you know personally is a victim, etc. after which your perception of these events changes from “I live in an exciting place where sometimes bad things happen” to “this place is not safe for me and my loved ones.” This effect is probably delayed a bit by Hipsters and young whites postponing having children (exposing one’s children to vibrancy requires a second order of obliviousness), but I predict white flight it is an inevitability if the new trend of urban crime continues.

  54. Pretty hilarious, the way Steve scratches his head, all pretend-stumped over what could possibly be causing this spike in (mostly) black-on-black murder rates?

I’ve joked for years – only now I add quote marks to joked – that “we live in a world where racism is far far worse than murder”, but the fact is that blacks have lived in this world, 24/7, for far longer (except that the ‘racism’ bit is a fairly recent addition, not that it’s come close to even denting the body count).

To blacks, murder is just a thing that happens; as sudden as a summer storm, and as unknowable as white-boy science. It is their textbook definition of ‘conflict resolution’, and according to the script pages we’re all supposed to follow verbatim, it’s up to us to adjust our (racist) reality-set to theirs. But be aware that we are dealing with scriptwriters for whom a finale of savages dancing around dead missionaries in cannibal cookpots represents poetic justice, so adjust your expectations accordingly.

The BLM ‘movement’ inhibits law enforcement; this in turn inhibits civil order, and – voila! – the murder-needle sharply ascends into the red area of the inner-city graph paper. The only result more predictable are ever-shriller op-eds from hand-wringing SJWs running out of scapegoats, but something tells me they’ll be falling sharply out of favor as we draw closer and closer to 2017. (I just hope that something isn’t “wishful thinking”.)

  57. Gentrification will not end. What we will see is a pattern like that seen in Europe and in some South American countries, where the rich inhabit the valuable properties downtown, while the underclass is banished from the central city to banlieues or favelas like those on the outskirts of Paris or Rio de Janeiro.

This phenomenon is already visible in some American cities. Ferguson, for example, is a black banlieue of St. Louis.

  60. Rick, Toronto and Chicago are comparable only in population numbers, and it is black crime we are discussing here. A trip to Toronto will show you that the city is trending toward less than 50% white with a recent influx of Southeast Asians and other “visible minorities ( Canadian Census term, really). Yet Toronto’s crime problem , especially violent crime, is the handiwork of their small black population, mostly from the West Indies. One of the Toronto newspapers called it the problem we don’t want to discus. I have stated this before, other than in colonial times, there was no slavery in Canada. The vast majority of Canadian blacks are there of their own volition . Canada was the preferred terminus of slaves fleeing on the Underground Railroad. Canada had no Jim Crow laws or segregation. Toronto has no area that you would refer to as the ghetto. Toronto is the perfect petri dish to research black criminality.

  61. Chris, nice try but AndrewR is correct. A promising expat young man (last name Shomsky) from Cleveland, working in US government I think, was shot and killed in DC. He happened to be standing in the line of fire between two vibrants when they opened fire on each other. He was at a bus stop, near his gentrified residence. Tremont, the latest in-place in Cleveland, has been the scene of multiple violent car-jackings and armed robberies. In all cases the victims were white hipsters and the suspects black thugs. I can say that , right?

  63. The term “Ferguson Effect” fits the MSM narrative that cops are the problem, even when they chose not to engage the bad guys. Truth is, police have a poor rate of closure when it comes to solving most murders. I don’t think it is reasonable to expect the police to prevent crimes, in this case shootings and murders, when the powers that be don’t want them to “police” the most likely criminals.

Obviously, much has changed since I lived in SA, but greater Johannesburg and Durban long had much higher black populations and violent crime rates than Cape Town.

Has CT’s black population (in places like Khayelitsha) grown so dramatically?

Or has SAPS been under-reporting crime in Johannesburg/Durban, perhaps because of ANC control, while providing accurate stats for Cape Town, perhaps because of DA inflience?

This WaPo article may make you think the homicide spike will negatively affect gentrification, since the shiny infographic at the top of the page shows Minneapolis, Portland and Denver (America’s fastest gentrifying cities) alongside Baltimore and Cleveland (America’s Blackest cities) as being equally impacted by the murder wave. This is a good example of lying with statistics, both because comparing “percent change in homicide rate” makes cities with lower murder rates look worse and because the sample includes the convenient but not-so-pertinent set of 50 US cities with the largest populations, instead of the more relevant set of US cities with the highest murder rates in 2014.

The second infographic plots changes in absolute murder rates, the statistic we care about, but it’s too confusing to gain any insight. It’s very cluttered, hard to compare cities, and arbitrarily highlights the cities with large police clashes rather than those with the largest murder spikes, reinforcing the idea that “nobody knows what’s going.”

You are not totally off-base connecting gentrification with the murder spike. Gentrification is generally portrayed in the media as whites displacing Blacks, but in reality it’s a two step process in which low-crime Hispanics displace Blacks under the radar, and whites in turn displace those Hispanics. Ron Unz alludes to this in his articles on Hispanic and Black crime. Blacks either get pushed into public housing in the suburbs or into majority Black cities, which have gotten significantly blacker over the past 25 years. In short, gentrification and the “Black Death” are two sides of the same coin of the Hispanization of America. This bodes well for those in cities like NYC or Portland, but terribly for those in St. Louis or Cleveland.

I agree with your suggestions., however. You cannot get Smarties to return if they are expected to pay for a massive, broken infrastructure AND all the welfare cases and deadbeats that hung around. There needs to be a way to “deaccession” big chunks of Flint, Detroit, etc. and let urban pioneers move back.

Think of it this way. If the Puritans were obligated to give American aborigines welfare, free medical care, free schools, free fire protection, free policing, AND they were obligated to submit to aboriginal tribal courts and aboriginal chiefs, they NEVER would have settled in New England.

So why should anyone expect new white settlers in the Detroit wilderness to pay for and submit to the aborigines of Detroit?

Agree. I don’t know Flint, but my own area’s industrial work force (in NE Ohio) was a mash of poor Southern whites, Southern Blacks, and Euro-ethnics. A volatile mix of peoples that resulted in bloody clashes between the more nativist than racist KKK and the Mob in the early 20th century.

I’m a fan of the topics brought up by Steve and the other writers on “UR”. I’m skeptical, though, that the thinking here can meaningfully inform policy choices and legislation. Why? Because most white folks, I think, have successfully self-segregated from Blacks (at tremendous cost) one way or another. Having distanced themselves from the very real existential threat that Blackism poses to Western values, they’re (whites, that is) back to differentiating themselves from one another on the bases of class, income, secondary school, religious affiliation, ZIP code of residence, and God knows what-all.

I doubt it. If things get too edgy you move to whiter areas and let the next wave of brainwashed, gullible, ex-suburbanites fight in the trenches. If you bought property even 5 years ago you can get equity from a sale. Also, these gentrifiers view themselves as on the right side of history. They have an élan their parents or grandparents did not share. They are card-carrying Obama voters and feminists. They start restaurants and micro-brew bars with European menus and go to yoga classes. They build bike lanes and modern art galleries. All to baffle, intimidate and confuse negroes. One pot-head I know gets his edible marijuana from CA delivered monthly to Philly from our friend who has a prescription. Regarding that list of the cities of the highest crime rates, if there was a truly correct way of gathering from all the cities, then you would find that almost all the African cities would at the top of the list. The reason you do not see them is that they are not capable of collecting the correct stats.

The proposed solution to the (partly self-inflicted) budget problems of the cities, including the “massive, broken infrastructure AND all the welfare cases and deadbeats that hung around” up here in upstate NY, is for the cities to consolidate their school districts with the surrounding suburbs, thus Hoovering up money from the pockets of the honkies who fled the cities.

This has been proposed, trial-balloon fashion, in both Syracuse and Buffalo, as a good government measure to reduce duplicative government entities, etc…I doubt that it will become reality, however, until political conditions are right i.e., Democrats are firmly in power in both the cities and surrounding suburbs, and I don’t see that happening soon.

Of course, I confidently predicted that Donald Trump, as a candidate, would never be more than a piñata for the press, so consider the source.

  99. Yes its the same guy Darnell Earley a black guy with a good appearance but not much of a record of accomplishment. He didn’t know much about water systems and now we’ll see how much he knows about education.

Flint is of course a failing city. It is in serious financial trouble. Early was the fourth emergency manager appointed in six years. He inherited a financial problem and also a water problem. Flint had had a corruption problem in the fifties with a new water source. A powerful local politician had tried to tried to maneuver Flint to buy Lake Huron facilities on land he had been buying up. Flint was repelled by this attempt and just bought their water from Detroit.

But of course Detroit had its own problems. Approximately half of Detroit’s remaining population doesn’t pay its water bill. They have been cutting off service to users in an attempt to become solvent once again. Detroit it seemed no longer valued the Flint business.

Flint made a deal with a new Huron water company in Genesee county. Detroit water learned of this and raised Flint’s rates. But Flint couldn’t use the new Huron water source for two years. So Early was confronted with two years of high rates – rates he did not want to pay.

The Emergency Manager overrides the local elected officials. The local officials approved of Earley’s plan to use water from the Flint River but it was his decision alone. There are pictures on the Web of the council happily celebrating the decision while raising glasses of the poisonous Flint River water.

The area of the water uptake is a former Buick facility. It is polluted. But that’s not the problem. The residents like to get their pictures taken holding a bottle of rusty brown water. That’s not the problem either. The rust and dirt in the water is generally harmless but the lead is deadly. lead is colorless and odorless in water.

The problem is that Flint has lead feeder pipes from the water mains. Here in Oakland California there are no lead feeder pipes. They all were taken out years ago but in the East many big and small cities still have lead pipes in their water distribution systems. Many of these cities now have big expensive projects under weigh to dig them all up. In one city this is a half billion dollar project.

Most of the time a city can tolerate lead pipes because an impervious lead oxide film forms on the inside of the pipes. This is why Rome could use lead pipes for centuries without bad effects. Their lead problem came from other areas – cooking vessels and wine.

Rome had alkali water but the Flint River is acidic. It quickly dissolved the protective lead coating in the Flint water system feeder pipes. One authority writes that the permissible level of lead is 10 parts per billion. Another says eleven. The federal government use fifteen as a limit. There have been some measurements from the Flint water system of over three thousand ppb. Bad water.

Darnell Earley was trying to save some money.

There are no lead feeder pipes in the EBMUD (East Bay Municipal Utilities District) but there may be lead pipes in my house. I had a new water heater installed last year it probably was soldered with the new no-lead solder. Apparently even brass faucets are made with a small amount of lead. But all these minor lead sources are under attack. In the near future nothing will be allowed to contain lead that might come in contact with human water consumption. Domestic lead will go the way of asbestos.

How is it that I know all this? I know this much and quite a bit more because I spent a couple hours this morning reading Wikipedia and some news articles. So I wonder why Earley who was made the head of a water department didn’t know any of it?

  101. I found it interesting that what happens in St. Louis is not counted because St. Louis proper is not in the biggest 50 cities list. But the St. Louis metropolitan area has to be in the top 50 metropolitan areas, I’d bet in the top 25. No one lives in the city proper: even years ago it was mostly industrial, with a small downtown core area of historical sites and a few higher end residential areas, some of which have turned to hardcore ghetto. As far back as the 1880s, people were spreading to the hinterlands, hence the lovely old Victorians and turn of the century market buildings on Manchester Road.

  102. From Savannah, GA:

As Chief Lumpkin and the SCMPD cast about for answers to the alarming 2015 murder rate, they have identified domestic violence (along with guns) as the main generator of the swollen 2015 numbers.

While I feel sure this was certainly true, were there any other factors that may have influenced the explosion of homicides in Savannah? So I looked at the SCMPD weekly crime data reports for 2015.

Maybe some pattern will jump out from the numbers that would help me understand the state of Savannah and what in the world happened to bloat the city’s murder numbers to a level not seen since the Jivens Gang. Maybe it really was just an uptick in domestic violence with the easy availability of guns that led to the increased 2015 murder rate.

    Nah.

    The numbers show something different:

–There were 6 murders in Savannah from January 1, 2015 to April 11, 2015. This number was actually down 3 from 2014 and down 2 from 2013. That’s super good policing, right? Extrapolating that number out from the first 15 weeks of 2015, SCMPD could reasonably predict about 21 murders for the year–a substantial decrease from 2014 and 2013. Kudos for everyone!

–Looking at the data historically, we know that 23 more murders were committed in 2014 and 22 more murders were committed in 2013 from mid-April on. So by mid-April, about 25% of the year’s total murders were committed in 2013 and 2014 (28% in 2014). By mid-April 2015, the murder total was only 12.5% of the year’s total. Something happened in mid April 2015 that pulled the murder numbers higher from 2014 and 2013.

–According to the weekly reports, the time period between February 22, 2015-April 11, 2015 was the safest portion of the year. Not one murder was committed. Zero. Go back a tad further and only 1 murder was committed from February 8, 2015-April 11, 2015. Unprecedented peace in Savannah! Then all hell breaks loose.

–By April 18, 2015 Savannah’s peace was shattered by a triple homicide. For the next 37 weeks, the murder rate climbs, finally surpassing the 2014 and 2013 murder rates for good by May 9, 2015. (That’s the date Savannah sees its 12th murder of the year with both 2014 and 2013 having 11 murders. This lead stays and grows for the rest of 2015).

–October 2015 carded 10 murders making it the bloodiest month of the year. Between September 27, 2015 and November 28, 2015, 16 murders were committed–almost 30% of the year’s total.

–Not only did the murder numbers soar in 2015, but the violent crimes rate (rapes, robberies, assaults) increased too. By the end of 2015, the violent crime rate was a full 25% higher than 2014 and 36% higher than 2013.

    What happened?

Let’s see. Easily availability of guns? Yep. Gang activity? Yep. People using guns to solve their domestic issues? Yep. But heck, that’s every day in Savannah. Why the sudden, dramatic increase in murderous, violent behavior?

The Baltimore Black Lives Matter rioting began on April 18, 2015 and lasted until May 3, 2015. A good portion of Savannah’s black governmental and educational infrastructure seem to subscribe to the Black Lives Matter cause as an article of faith. Most every black candidate in this year’s election cycle paid lip service to the Black Lives Matter credo. Look at the restorative justice programs the school system has signed up for and its apparent that many, many more violent infractions in schools are being ignored–because Black Lives Matter.

I suppose with the SCMPD always riding with about 75-80 vacancies and with the possibility of a Black Lives Matters flare up with every arrest or domestic quarrel, not to mention being hauled into court or arrested as strong possibilities every time a cop goes off to work, who would want to enforce anything?

But probably just a correlation. Certainly not causation.

  106. This is all very sad.

The simple fact is that the greed for cheap–or more precisely malaria resistant–labor, led some early Americans to import a population that simply had not evolved the skill set even for temperate zone agriculture (discipline, hard work, mechanical sense, planning ahead) much less for a modern industrial society.

America has been unable to solve this problem, and post-war, Great Society welfare policy has made it even worse. And left\Democrat\Jewish blame-whitey agitation has made it even worse and more combustible. The lack of a solution is because there simple isn’t a polite solution available. What’s needed is a different set of genes.

And if things are bad now, we have driverless cars coming. Someone posted the link to the Japanese robo-lettuce factory. We’ll quite shortly have even much less need for unskilled labor. There’s no foreseeable reason why we’d need any labor for delivery, fast food, meatpacking, even hospitality–outside of cute girls for waitresses, and even those may become robots.

And yet from some combination of ethnic hatred, politics and greed, rather than learning the lesson from America’s unhappy racial history … we’re on a cheap labor binge. And other nations in the West, rather than learning from our sad experience, are guilt tripped into copying it. Insanity.

It seems clear to me that the civilizations that will “win” are those that will embrace eugenics. You could substantially mostly “heal” America’s racial problem in about three generations of serious eugenics. Nations without that bitter burden are in an even better place. And it can be done with incentives, markets and payouts that keep it voluntary, non-coercive. But it does require a clear eyed willingness to see reality and face it. But for those nations that do … life is going to get *much* better. The future will belong to them.

  107. I think Niwdog’s law only applies on Unz. ;)

You can take a middle path. There have been a disproportionate number of Jews in the movements to diminish white exclusivity and power, but it doesn’t mean Jews sit around thinking about how they’re going to exterminate white people…there’s a 70% intermarriage rate after all, and they’re not all Chinese girls. From what I’ve seen they seem to swallow this social justice crap, and then turn around and send their kids to private school like any other white liberal. I’d actually say they assimilated pretty well…they just assimilated into the *left* half of the American elite, and gave it a huge shot in the arm in its eternal war against the South.

Similarly, while I think fascism is a dumb idea, particularly in the USA where pretty much some form of democracy is all we’ve ever had, if there are going to be black and Latino identity politics and the number of white people is decreasing, you’d expect white people to form identity politics sooner or later. Given what’s happened in Zimbabwe and South Africa, I wouldn’t want to be in a minority either.

As for the Putin thing, I’m not sure how much is some weird Zionist thing (how does Ukraine’s secession help Israel?) and how much is greedy Americans trying to pull every country into their sphere of influence. I mean, it’s an empire. They like to grow. Putin’s into the same thing, only his position’s not as strong right now–we’ve got troops at his border. It’s as if Mexico were a Russian ally.

Not to say neocons, etc., don’t do bad things (for America) on behalf of Israel–look at Iraq.

  111. Great points, but I don’t even think it’s a need for cheap labour that’s driving the rush to flood our countries with non-whites anymore, despite the fact that the global capitalists are all in favour of it. In Europe at least, they’re all for indiscriminate immigration, with no distinction being made between those with marketable skills and those who are destined to be permanently unemployed. It seems the powers that be are terrified of healthy, homogeneous societies and prefer countries to be made up of rootless, insecure people demoralised by the changes they’re witnessing all around them.

It is true that there’s been a change in crime over the past year. I don’t walk by myself after dark anymore. It’s not bad enough that I would move, though, and I haven’t heard of anyone else moving for that reason.

I do know people who’ve moved to the suburbs for the schools. My kids have been very happy with their schools, but it is a tremendous pain in the neck to navigate the system for K-4, and then admission to the good middle and high schools require top standardized test scores. Plenty of people get sick of the hassle and go. But no one is leaving because of safety.

  116. Hurricane Katrina was a picture perfect Category 5 hurricane the day before landfall with winds of 175 mph. It was due south of New Orleans. Only a small ‘wobble’ to the east prevented this storm from coming in right on top of New Orleans. Everyone who checked the National Hurricane Center updates knew this storm was off the charts dangerous and New Orleans was in great peril.

I recall watching as Mayor Nagin began sending people to the Louisiana Super Dome and wondered what in the hell he was thinking. As it happened the roof began to fail on that structure despite the most intense winds being miles to the east in Gulfport. Had Katrina come over New Orleans its 29 foot storm surge and Category three winds would have obliterated that city and left thousands dead in the ‘emergency shelters’.

  124. Here is the wind speed and track data. At 3am Aug 28 top winds were 100 mph. 12 hours later, top winds were 150 mph. That is a rare pace of intensification that no one expected. Katrina made land fall 11 AM Aug 29, just over 24 hours after the intensification began. The top wind speeds over the life of the storm were 150 mph.

  125. Despite broken windows ambience & regalia of slumnification Sacramento like most of the Central Valley cities is not especially dangerous, at least not by comparison to the coastal cities which are consistently worse for violent crime. Now even theoretically yuppie-friendly Santa Cruz has become a beachhead for gangs. The closer to the ocean, the more wacked-out the civic politicians tend to be (I am referring to medium & big cities, not obvious contradicting cases e.g. Carmel).

The downward mobility and incipient cruddyness of the Valley is another matter. It’s starting to look like the worst places of the Inland Empire. I don’t necessarily mean in a Victor Davis Hanson “Mexifornia” sense, but you can observe a sudden prevalence — last 10 years? — of social drop-outs, bindlestiffs on tricycles, and wizened urine-soaked lunatics camped out at the primary bus stops, with their dogs, vagabonding it like some Woody Guthrie parody. Could be all that white heroin & meth abuse they’ve been discovering at the think tanks

  128. You know, I’ve always wanted to hear this explained, it’s sort of a mantra/shibboleth among your set, but with certain self-evident defects of logic: “The Iraq invasion was a favor to Israel”–how? It hastened the transformation of a 4th-world fiefdom under an ailing, basically irreligious strongman into a cat’s paw of Iran, coincidentally Israel’s most vocal (not to mention, militarily committed) enemy. It also ruined their lifeline to Turkey and eventually sunk Mubarak. Among other vibrant developments in jihad enfranchisement.

Yet you cling to this meme about a giant surprise Channukah gift for Likud, it was finangled by somehow, thanks to Mossad frogmen… Back in reality, if Tel Aviv, Haifa and Lower East Al-Quds had a couple dozen opinionators in 2003 advocating for war, they were laughably outnumbered by like-minded machers in London, New York, Palm Beach, and Falls Church. Is it just too identitarianistically painful to admit that paid-up goys like Cheneystein, Rumsfeldowitz, and Hadassah Rice were the sous chefs on the Iraq turd sandwich? Of course, to contemporary Yelp raves from Ann Coulterberg & Moishe Limbaugh

  132. I think this is true. When I lived in a pre-gentrification black neighborhood in DC, a lot of the older long time residents would complain about the generation that came after them – the proliferation of out of wedlock pregnancies, the crime, the indifference to the concept of working or earning an honest living. These were all working class people who had raised their kids in two parent homes and made an effort to keep up their homes and the neighborhood.

They also had low trust in the (majority black) police force, correctly noting that many of them were basically criminals themselves or related to them, and if a good citizen called the police because of a violent crime, more often than not the police would tell the perpetrator who had dropped a dime.

The area underwent a ton of violence during the crack epidemic and then a secondary wave right before the Great Recession as large numbers of previously-incarcerated people completed their sentences and came back home. When we discussed the surge in homicides, the response of one of my neighbors was that “it was just the trash taking out the trash.”

  133. but the fact is that blacks have lived in this world, 24/7, for far longer…To blacks, murder is just a thing that happens…It is their textbook definition of ‘conflict resolution’, and according to the script pages we’re all supposed to follow verbatim, it’s up to us to adjust our (racist) reality-set to theirs.

    Indeed.

But they are moving out of their cities into ours to escape this. They are moving out of their countries into ours to escape this. They like to brag about how tough they are; about how they keep it Real; about how “snitches get stitches”; yet here they come, wanting something they can’t create or maintain themselves and expecting others to adapt.

  138. Drugs are one of the few ways the untalented, dumb, and ruthless can make a living.

This is probably true, but it might be an aspect of life in the US that business and zoning are so heavily regulated that people cannot make a living in other manners, even if they are willing to do so.

For example, the guy I know in the Dominican Republic who has a tiny fruit stand outside a department store where he will sell you a peeled orange for a few cents, or the people with stands outside the US Embassy in Santo Domingo who will take care of your cell phone for a couple of hours while you go inside to deal with your visa application, or the guy who sold me my shoes off a little store on the back of his motor cycle, or the people I saw in Haiti the week after the earthquake who had little gasoline-powered electrical generators on the street hooked up to charge a dozen cell phones at once for a few gourdes so that homeless people could call their family members overseas to ask for help.

In the US it is extraordinarily difficult to set up a small business of one or two people–even if there is a need–without running into all kinds of licensing and regulatory problems. Small business properties also tend to be much larger than needed, with high rents, and it is difficult to rent a few square feet for a small business. Several years ago I was told that one of those barrows in an indoor shopping mall selling belts or cell phone covers had to pay a rent of $3000 per month. Now it is no doubt more.

That number does not include another $140 million in grant money. The new Superintendent of Buffalo Schools is in Albany this week asking for $48 million to fund some new initiatives he is proposing . The City of Buffalo contributes only 7.5% of the BSD budget. We suburban honkies are doing our share for the BSD. Buffalo trails only NYC and Rochester in the entire nation for school districts with 30,000 students. They spent almost $21,000 per pupil. Suburbanites, white ,brown, yellow can’t flee any further. They will revolt.

  144. “But no one is leaving because of safety.”

Murders increased 12 percent over 2014 and nonfatal shootings 18 percent over 2014. I doubt that those numbers are anomalies given the similar increases in other urban areas. Some “nonfatal shootings” are no doubt injuries which would be murders in years past but for heroic life saving treatments and technologies perfected on the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan.

Understand that in the bad old days, murders were about double of what they are now, with a larger population. If shootings and murders continue to rise year over year according to the 2015 trend you’re looking at a fairly rapid wave of crime which will not take long to return to 70s/80s/early 90s rates. So what will happen is that limited police resources will be diverted to solving murders and shootings and assaults, rapes, home invasions, muggings and sundry property crimes will increase. Law enforcement on the triage system. Philadelphia is now majority black and the political apparatus is near entirely beholden to blacks. The chances that you’ll see a reformer cum law and order type in the mold of Rendell regain the Mayoralty any time soon is remote at best. The path to City Hall lies in denying the criminality of blacks while using the crime rate as a pretext to demand more programs and funding from Uncle Sam and the Commonwealth. All of the bad old excuses and deflections for urban crime never really went away.

It’s just a bit silly and naive to say after the first year of a this trend “I’m not concerned.”

When you wake up one morning and realize that your freedom is self-restrained and your mental repose is constantly invaded b
