Bill Clinton has been referred to as a ‘Rhodes Scholar’ many times over the years. But he never completed it, did he? Didn’t he abruptly abscond, practically in the dead of night? Any known reasons for that? I think Christopher Hitchens (if I remember correctly) claimed it was because of some rape accusations that induced our hero to zip out of there. Any truth to all that?

  7. Speaking of racism, I finally saw Django Unchained. I don’t understand why Steve was down on it. What’s not to like? It was entertaining throughout its nearly 3 hour run.

It didn’t particularly seem like a bash-whitey film. The title character owes his freedom entirely to a saintly white who, like Lincoln, “fought for what was on my brain until a BULLET…WENT…THROUGH IT!” Django does express a desire to kill-whitey but the mockery by the other white dude puts it in context. Overall, the movie seems as likely to encourage violence as a Tom-and-Jerry cartoon.

Then again, I can’t say how whites would feel seeing it, particularly Southern whites. iSteve readers have any comments?

"I don’t understand why Steve was down on it."

He wasn't. He mildly praised it, especially for its look.

Entertaining or not, it sounds dumb.

INGLORIOUS BASTERDS was entertaining, I guess, but it was so retarded.

Tarantino, Trey Parker, and etc. They are not without talent but people of puerile sensibility.

Now, take someone like Sergio Corbucci. His film-making skills were well-below that of Leone. And his Marxist politicizing was rather ridiculous.
But there is true passion and sense of agony in his films. Though his violence sometimes verge on sadism, he makes you feel the pain, and it's certainly no laughing matter.

His DJANGO films are rough and crude but not without power.
And THE GREAT SILENCE is genuinely tragic. The mute hero played beautifully by Jean-Louis Tritignant, the avenging mulatto heroine(who sort of looks like the sizzling hot ho Rihanna at least in Umbrella video), and the formidable nihilist Klaus Kinski form a dark triangle of motives, hatreds, and provocations. Kinski is a real son of a bitch but true to his evil nature. Not something to admire but it has to be acknowledged that it's not just about petty greed. He was born bad, and he is as true to himself as a saint is to his own nature.

Corbucci was no great artist or even very good film-maker, but he did believe in his vision despite a string of trashy-cheapie movies. What I see in Tarantino(after the genuinely great RESERVOIR DOGS) is glibness. Even his politicking of late seems to be a role-playing imitation of radicalism of the past. He SNL-izes and Monty-Pythonizes so much of what he touches but still pretends to be working in some kind of serious, even tragic, mode.

GREAT SILENCE is like a rough cut diamond. It's too crude for greatness. Much of it is trash. But it has the stuff to be great if it were handled by someone more talented than Corbucci.

  12. I notice the title change to “Protests Racism” from the original “Protests Imperialism”.

The Left doesn’t use this term much anymore, except the most hardened “Reds.” Yet a reasonably objective analysis would show that the USA practices a form of what-most-would-call imperialism if another state did it. Large military presences, active interventions all across the planet, etc., to say nothing of cultural imperialism.

Does this mean the Left would be (or, is) okay with a non-racist, rainbow imperialism? An Obama Imperialism.

I'll confess that I never kept up with all the Clinton gossip, but I seem to recall someone posting a few months ago re the real father of Chelsea Clinton. I believe he maintained it was Webster Hubbell, Hillary's former law partner and Bill's former Associate U.S. Attorney General. I seem to recall that the basis for the rumor was something Bill allegedly told Gennifer Flowers (?) about his being infertile, but I'm not sure about that. But if that was so, how could he impregnate the black woman?

BTW I did a little Googling to catch up on the "news" and came across this funny passage from one of the articles dealing with the Web Hubbell "connection":
"In summer 1979 Bill found out that Hillary was pregnant by reading about it in the newspaper Arkansas Gazette which covered the press conference of Hillary’s doctor, not by being told by Hillary. One of Bill’s donor friends told this amazing anecdote to author Edward Klein. In what other “family” in America does the so-called “wife” (Hillary) hold a press conference to announce her pregnancy and not even tell her “husband” (Bill) that she is pregnant with what is presumed to be their first child?"

  18. Apropos of nothing – Hezbollah fighters have been enlisting to fight in Syria because the al-Sham in Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham includes Lebanon, and an ISIS victory in Syria means the eventual invasion of Lebanon. Thanks to Merkel, some Hezbollah fighters have decided to quit fighting, figuring that there’s always Germany:

He is not only disillusioned with the war, which he calls “a contest of superpowers,” but has also resigned himself to a cynical sectarian outlook on the region. “Let the Sunnis liberate Palestine,” he says, rejecting the pan-Arab solidarity that inspired him to take up arms in the first place.

Instead, he says he helped his nephews flee Lebanon for Germany after they deserted their units in Syria. Soon, he says, he will also take his family to Germany.

One of Hezbollah’s central arguments for propping up Assad’s brutal regime is that its troops are protecting Lebanon from Sunni jihadists bringing the war home. When The Daily Beast put that position to Abu Ahmed, just a few kilometers from where two ISIS suicide bombers killed 43 people in November, his answer is blunt.

“Let them come over here, I’m leaving.”

  21. Steve, this article from the LAT could do with your treatment. Sample:

They had benefited from post-World War II prosperity and government programs, such as the GI Bill, that allowed their parents to raise them in comfortable suburban homes and send them to free, decent public schools. Later, Great Society initiatives such as the Higher Education Act of 1965 enabled them to attend college in historic numbers at a reasonable cost, and there were jobs in the offing after graduation.

Back then, public investments in America’s families and youth were embraced by older generations who wanted their children and grandchildren to achieve the American dream. The situation — and the demography — is much different today.

The younger population of the U.S. is now highly diverse. Racial minorities, who are not always from the middle class, represent roughly half of the students in the nation’s K-12 public schools.

The authors seem to completely miss the point between investing in public spending which benefits your children and that which takes from your family to give to people you don’t even want in society alongside of you.

The entire article is filled with analysis which misses the mark because the writers don’t understand the reality that exists.

    This Jewish hatred of walls…

But then Jews love walls too. The wailing wall. I mean Jews can’t be happy that the walls of Jerusalem were all smashed. And today’s Israel is a walled nation-state.

Jews associate walls with the Berlin Wall, the walls around Warsaw Ghetto, and the wall-like immigration policy of the world during the Holocaust when most Jewish refugees weren’t allowed in.

But is the Jewish psychological fixation about walls really about WWII or is it more sexual in nature?
Think of HEARTBREAK KID where the wasp father calls himself a ‘brick wall’. He keeps saying that the Jewish guy is staring at a brick wall and that he never caves.
So, how much of this ‘wall stuff’ is really about “Jewish victims of the Holocaust were not allowed into your nation” and how much is it really about “Jewish puds were once walled out of shiksa pooters”?

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sWJAnG8pLWg&feature=youtu.be&t=4m15s

I mean that scene is very telling. Grodin is just a very horny guy who wants to get into the pants of this blonde wasp girl. But he makes it out like it’s some principled mission of justice. The stuff he says is hilarious if not on the surface. (Though the dynamic between father and grodin is like that between Vito Corleone and Bonasera in the opening of GODFATHER, we see Grodin turning it around and gaining the advantage. Vito admonished Bonasera for offering money, and Grodin is ‘shocked, shocked’ that money is being discussed.)
“There’s not enough money in all the banks in Minneapolis… in all the banks of Minnesota, not in all the banks of the United States of America…” (Never mind that Jews have much of that money in banks around the world. i.e. IF Jews can’t be bought, it’s not because they are above money but because they are awash in money, though, to be sure, Grodin’s character is not rich. What Jews prize is what they can get with money and/or determination, not what they must lose in exchange for money. Money alone is never enough.) It even gets funnier with the stuff about how he served in the military but “I fought every goddamn minute of those three years(which unwittingly implies that he really fought the idea of military service–mostly by grumbling to himself–than the enemies of America)… unfortunately not overseas because of a minor back injury… nothing more than your average hard-working enlisted man.”
It kills me. He’s a Jewish guy who obviously isn’t satisfied with the average, the ordinary, the normal. He even went AWOL on his average-looking wife. He wants the very best blonde wasp girl he ever laid eyes on but he acts like he’s fighting for her in the name of the common man. Thus, he finally finds a crack in the ‘brick wall’ with his paean to ‘fair play’ and God-Bless-America patriotism. But of course, he really looks down on your average slob who is content with the humdrum.
Go for the the princess by invoking the peasants.

It’s the same thing with the country clubs or golf clubs. It’s the Wall as a psychological barrier. Jews wanted IN into the very best, but when they were barred, they invoked the downtrodden to soften wasp resistance and resolve. But in truth, Jews wanted IN because they never wanted to be with the hoi polloi whom they despise. Just look how Jews seethe at Trump supporters(often in the name of defending the rights of Muslims whose lands, btw, have been utterly turned into rubble by Neocon foreign policy).

Grodin’s patriotic nonsense is more ridiculous than Michael Corleone’s military service card to get out of his troubles in GODFATHER II. (At least Michael really did fight in combat. Also, he volunteered, whereas you can tell Grodin was almost certainly drafted.)

    Same ‘moral’ dynamic in WOWS.

HEARTBREAK KID and HEARTBREAK RIDGE. (Or watch WOWS as double feature with AMERICAN SNIPER.) People should see them back to back.
We see the Neocon mentality in the former, we see the gentile Con mentality in the latter. One people are determined to enlist and fight. Another people are determined to enter into the sanctum of power and control the fight. Who takes orders from whom?

He didn't have to. She only had to think he did. He didn't necessarily inform every woman he bedded of his (putative) condition. She "met in congress" with (at least) two white guys, and the other one turned out to be the father.

(She must have a thing for white, if she sent her mulatto kid to Australia. An African or Caribbean school would have served just as well for getting the kid out of his country's glare.)

The Hubbell kerfubble reminds me of Prince Harry, who is supposed to look like Diana's boytoy Chris Hewitt. But a more charitable, and likelier, explanation is that Diana, when fed up with Charles, ran into the arms of a man who reminded her of the men in her family, whom Harry favors as well. Freudian, yes, but by modern "standards", hardly scandalous.

I notice the title change to "Protests Racism" from the original "Protests Imperialism".

The Left doesn't use this term much anymore, except the most hardened "Reds." Yet a reasonably objective analysis would show that the USA practices a form of what-most-would-call imperialism if another state did it. Large military presences, active interventions all across the planet, etc., to say nothing of cultural imperialism.

Does this mean the Left would be (or, is) okay with a non-racist, rainbow imperialism? An Obama Imperialism.

“I notice the title change to “Protests Racism” from the original “Protests Imperialism”.”

The first version of the title was just barely too long for Twitter.

  34. If you haven’t noticed, Bill doesn’t do resignations. Wily ol’ horndawg doesn’t take stuff personally if there’s future upside in there somewhere-he moves in mysterious ways. And remember, Bill Clinton is entirely capable of dropping his wife like a hot potato if he figures he can find a way for a future President Trump to make him Secretary General of the United Nations or some such, as a hypothetical example.

You may hate the hustler, but you gotta admire the hustle.

Apropos of nothing - Hezbollah fighters have been enlisting to fight in Syria because the al-Sham in Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham includes Lebanon, and an ISIS victory in Syria means the eventual invasion of Lebanon. Thanks to Merkel, some Hezbollah fighters have decided to quit fighting, figuring that there's always Germany:

"Even the black woman with the kid in Australian prep school wouldn’t risk being exposed by a DNA test if she hadn’t, um, been in congress with the man."

But if that was so, how could he impregnate the black woman?

He didn’t have to. She only had to think he did. He didn’t necessarily inform every woman he bedded of his (putative) condition. She “met in congress” with (at least) two white guys, and the other one turned out to be the father.

(She must have a thing for white, if she sent her mulatto kid to Australia. An African or Caribbean school would have served just as well for getting the kid out of his country’s glare.)

The Hubbell kerfubble reminds me of Prince Harry, who is supposed to look like Diana’s boytoy Chris Hewitt. But a more charitable, and likelier, explanation is that Diana, when fed up with Charles, ran into the arms of a man who reminded her of the men in her family, whom Harry favors as well. Freudian, yes, but by modern “standards”, hardly scandalous.

    This Jewish hatred of walls...

But then Jews love walls too. The wailing wall. I mean Jews can't be happy that the walls of Jerusalem were all smashed. And today's Israel is a walled nation-state.

Jews associate walls with the Berlin Wall, the walls around Warsaw Ghetto, and the wall-like immigration policy of the world during the Holocaust when most Jewish refugees weren't allowed in.

But is the Jewish psychological fixation about walls really about WWII or is it more sexual in nature?
Think of HEARTBREAK KID where the wasp father calls himself a 'brick wall'. He keeps saying that the Jewish guy is staring at a brick wall and that he never caves.
So, how much of this 'wall stuff' is really about "Jewish victims of the Holocaust were not allowed into your nation" and how much is it really about "Jewish puds were once walled out of shiksa pooters"?

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sWJAnG8pLWg&feature=youtu.be&t=4m15s

I mean that scene is very telling. Grodin is just a very horny guy who wants to get into the pants of this blonde wasp girl. But he makes it out like it's some principled mission of justice. The stuff he says is hilarious if not on the surface. (Though the dynamic between father and grodin is like that between Vito Corleone and Bonasera in the opening of GODFATHER, we see Grodin turning it around and gaining the advantage. Vito admonished Bonasera for offering money, and Grodin is 'shocked, shocked' that money is being discussed.)
"There's not enough money in all the banks in Minneapolis... in all the banks of Minnesota, not in all the banks of the United States of America..." (Never mind that Jews have much of that money in banks around the world. i.e. IF Jews can't be bought, it's not because they are above money but because they are awash in money, though, to be sure, Grodin's character is not rich. What Jews prize is what they can get with money and/or determination, not what they must lose in exchange for money. Money alone is never enough.) It even gets funnier with the stuff about how he served in the military but "I fought every goddamn minute of those three years(which unwittingly implies that he really fought the idea of military service--mostly by grumbling to himself--than the enemies of America)... unfortunately not overseas because of a minor back injury... nothing more than your average hard-working enlisted man."
It kills me. He's a Jewish guy who obviously isn't satisfied with the average, the ordinary, the normal. He even went AWOL on his average-looking wife. He wants the very best blonde wasp girl he ever laid eyes on but he acts like he's fighting for her in the name of the common man. Thus, he finally finds a crack in the 'brick wall' with his paean to 'fair play' and God-Bless-America patriotism. But of course, he really looks down on your average slob who is content with the humdrum.
Go for the the princess by invoking the peasants.

It's the same thing with the country clubs or golf clubs. It's the Wall as a psychological barrier.

Grodin's patriotic nonsense is more ridiculous than Michael Corleone's military service card to get out of his troubles in GODFATHER II. (At least Michael really did fight in combat. Also, he volunteered, whereas you can tell Grodin was almost certainly drafted.)

    Same 'moral' dynamic in WOWS.

    https://youtu.be/xaRHgUS_49Q?t=1m17s

HEARTBREAK KID and HEARTBREAK RIDGE. (Or watch WOWS as double feature with AMERICAN SNIPER.) People should see them back to back.
We see the Neocon mentality in the former, we see the gentile Con mentality in the latter. One people are determined to enlist and fight. Another people are determined to enter into the sanctum of power and control the fight. Who takes orders from whom?

I rented "Wolf of Wall Street" from Netflix and watched it in one sitting. It was enormously entertaining and flew by quickly for a 3-hour film. Much better than I anticipated since the reviews were less than enthusiastic, as I seem to recall.

But using noms de guerre (and therefore unverifiability) is a fact of life for most of these interviews, pro and con, because of the fear of retaliation. The salient issue here isn't who's winning - it's the likelihood that footsoldiers on both sides are leaving for Germany rather than risk their lives fighting for the godforsaken wastelands of Syria.

And the reality is that Russia has mounted more air attacks against Assad's enemy in 3 months than the US coalition has over more than a year - but Assad hasn't taken back a single city, whereas the Iraqis have taken back Ramadi and the Kurds have gotten back Kobani in Syria and Sinjar in Iraq. The Syrian Arab Army is certainly a pale shadow of the force that leveled Hama back in the 80's, and nothing like the juggernaut that almost retook the Golan in the early 70's.

Hezbollah's failure to make a dent in Syria shows that it's a jumped-up militia whose major capability is using Lebanese civilians as human shields while trying to inflict casualties on Israeli task forces charged with retaliating for Hezbollah missile or other terror attacks. Hezbollah's offensive capability against dug-in adversaries, even when those adversaries are merely barely-trained Syrian opposition militia armed with a hodgepodge of weaponry, is not particularly impressive.
