From the BBC today:

London violent crime could take ‘a generation’ to solve
5 hours ago

It could take a generation to solve London’s violent crime problem, the city’s mayor has warned.

Two teenage boys and two men have been stabbed to death in the city in the last five days, including 15-year-old Jay Hughes.

Mayor Sadiq Khan told the BBC’s Today programme to “really make significant progress can take up to 10 years”. …

There have been 118 homicides in the capital this year, including 73 stabbings and 12 shootings, compared to 116 for the whole of last year. …

In September, a London Violence Reduction Unit was set up mirroring the approach taken in Glasgow, where violence is treated as a public health issue and “a disease infecting communities”. …

The mayor said children as young as primary school age are now carrying knives and warned it could take “a generation” to solve the problem.

He added: “They saw in Scotland what we’re seeing in London which is children in primary school thinking not only is it OK to carry a knife, but it gives them a sense of belonging, joining a criminal gang, it makes them feel safer. …

The latest figures from the Office for National Statistics released in April showed that knife crime rose by 22% in England and Wales in 2017.

… “Unfortunately this is something you can’t turn around particularly quickly,” he added.

“It’s something that has to last longer than a mayoral term, longer than a government term. This is something that has to have a ten, twenty-year strategy.”

Keep in mind:

- London’s murder rate is still far below, say, Chicago’s due to gun control over the last 98 years since the government was afraid of Revolution in 1920 and disarmed the populace. But still …

- That London is, along with NYC, one of the world’s two financial capitals. London is not some post-industrial second city like Malmo or Chicago where losers wind up, it’s the national showcase that in recent decades has attracted enormously rich foreign oligarchs.

- Also, London has long had an enormous number of cameras on the streets to deter crime.

So, London’s current problem with violent crime isn’t massive, but it ought to be embarrassing.

  1. The really sad thing is, what all these “youths” really want to do is shoot people, but they have to settle for knifes

118 homicides sounds bad to me, but as Theodore Dalrymple points out were in not for modern medical advancements the murder rate would be far higher

10 to 15 years from now I can see the same happening in Dublin/Ireland

A Labour frontbencher whose son was convicted of smuggling thousands of pounds of drugs into a music festival has handed him a promotion.

Shadow international development spokesman Kate Osamor now faces a potential Commons sleaze probe over her refusal to sack her son from his job in her Parliamentary office.

Ishmael Osamor, 29, pleaded guilty to having £2,500 of drugs with intent to supply at Bestival in Dorset last year.

But his mother has resisted pressure to remove him from his taxpayer-funded job in the House of Commons – and he has actually been promoted to become his mother’s chief-of-staff.

Labour last night refused to say whether he was handed the new role – which comes with a salary of up to £49,793 – before or after his arrest last September.

Miss Osamor, 50, was yesterday reported to Parliament’s standards watchdog over allegations she brought the Commons into ‘disrepute’ by ‘turning a blind eye’ to her son’s conviction.

But the Labour MP last night claimed criticism of her decision not to sack her son was racist.

In an open letter to the Parliamentary commissioner for standards, Tory MP Anne-Marie Trevelyan said Miss Osamor had ‘failed to uphold’ the code of conduct for MPs.

She wrote: ‘You do not need me to outline how serious drug offences are, and in this place we ought to treat them as such.

‘For a Member of Parliament to maintain the employment of someone convicted of such a crime turns a blind eye to the damaging consequences of such behaviour and seriously brings the integrity of Parliament into disrepute.

‘By continuing to allow a man convicted of a serious drug related offence to work in Parliament, Miss Osamor is clearly damaging the reputation of this House.’

Miss Osamor responded to the letter on Twitter, writing: ‘I have done nothing wrong. This is politically motivated.’

Ishmael Osamor, 29, pleaded guilty to having £2,500 of drugs with intent to supply at Bestival in Dorset last year

In a further tweet, she added: ‘The appalling abuse I have endured has been racist and politically motivated!’

Miss Osamor also ‘liked’ a series of tweets suggesting she had been targeted because she is a black woman.

One said: ‘Shame on the racist media who are taking a hit at another outstanding black woman, because they think she’s an easy target.’

Commons records showed Osamor earned between £30,000 and £35,000 in 2016/17 working in his mother’s office as a ‘senior communications officer’.

But in May, when he was elected as a local councillor in Haringey, north London, Osamor wrote on his declaration of interests that his job title was ‘chief-of-staff’.

A Labour spokesman declined to comment on whether Osamor was promoted since he was arrested in September last year, when he was caught with a £2,500 haul of ecstasy, cocaine, ketamine and cannabis. They said: ‘We don’t comment on staffing matters.’

A man who answered the telephone in Miss Osamor’s Commons office yesterday claimed that her son was unavailable.

Osamor’s new salary has not been made public, but pay scales for Commons researchers show MPs are allowed to pay their most senior staff between £33,000 and £49,793. The MP’s son was given a two-year community order and told to pay £400 prosecution costs after he pleaded guilty to four drugs related charges at Bournemouth Crown Court last month.

After the Daily Mail revealed his conviction, Osamor last week resigned as a councillor, saying: ‘I sincerely regret, and apologise for, not informing my family and colleagues of the pending court case, and have stood down.’

Miss Osamor has yet to condemn publicly or apologise for her son’s involvement with drugs, simply saying he had ‘admitted what he did was wrong and apologised’.MPs voted in July to change rules so the Parliamentary commissioner for standards no longer names those under investigation until an inquiry is concluded.

A spokesman for the commissioner, Kathryn Stone, said she could neither confirm nor deny whether a complaint had been received about Miss Osamor or whether it would be looked into.

Commons Speaker John Bercow last week agreed to launch a separate inquiry into whether Osamor should have his pass to the Parliamentary estate revoked. Senior figures including Sir Alistair Graham, former chairman of the committee on standards in public life, have called on Miss Osamor to sack her son.

Sir Alistair said last week: ‘He is clearly not the kind of person who should be working in Parliament.’

Labour shadow ministers yesterday voiced support for Miss Osamor. Karen Lee, shadow fire minister, tweeted: ‘You are a hard-working and principled MP … I’m proud to call you my friend.’

Ishmael Osamor was spared prison after his barrister persuaded prosecutors he was not planning to make a profit from his £2,500 haul of drugs.

Judge Stephen Climie, who has a history of sparing drug users from prison, said the 29-year-old was lucky to avoid a four-year prison term and sentenced him to 200 hours of unpaid work instead.

The judge’s decision was condemned last night by Mary Brett, chair of the anti-drugs group Cannabis Skunk Sense.

Mrs Brett said: ‘Police have become increasingly soft on drugs, especially cannabis, and judges aren’t making an example of users and dealers when they are brought to trial. In this case, Osamor has escaped with nothing more than a slap on the wrist which is quite amazing given the quantity of drugs he had on him. He shouldn’t have a job in the Commons. He should be in prison.’

Osamor pleaded guilty to four drugs charges after his barrister Mohsin Zaidi struck a deal with the Crown Prosecution Service at Bournemouth Crown Court.

The former Labour councillor had been caught with 30g of ecstasy – a class A drug blamed for a string of deaths at music festivals – as well 7.5g of cocaine, 5.7g of ketamine and a trace of cannabis at least year’s Bestival festival in Dorset.

Incredibly, he was let off prison as the drugs were for his personal use and for his friends. The court was not told how many friends were with him.

Presumably it’s legal to carry around bats, canes, bowstaffs and the like? Because those can be effective at deterring or defending against knife attacks. In many cases, they can be better weapons than knives. A man armed with a bat can beat a man armed with a knife in many cases because of the greater range. It’s not like defending against criminals with guns where bats are ineffectual. If more ordinary law abiding citizens carried bats, canes, bowstaffs, etc., they could deter a lot of knife crime. Ordinary people are also more comfortable with these kinds of weapons than carrying around guns.

  10. - London’s murder rate is still far below, say, Chicago’s due to gun control over the last 98 years since the government was afraid of Revolution in 1920 and disarmed the populace.

Chicago was founded in 1837 and likely had a higher murder rate than London by 1838. There was little gun control in Britain in those days, and Englishmen were required to keep and use archery gear right up until 1960.

    How does bow violence track?

But speaking of English crime, did you know that Sussex is (or was) divided into six tracts called rapes? Their names have carried over into the mid-Atlantic states, appropriately.

Naturally, more immigration is the solution. Once London becomes New Kabul, all this crime becomes the new normal: problem solved.

  12. Hmm. A generation to solve, he says. That sounds a lot like what Justice O’Conner said about how long we’d need affirmative action in the United States – 25 years. How’s that working out.

Btw, in a gruesome way, I’m pretty impressed that London can have that many murders using just knives. Killing a guy up close and personal like that takes a lot more than the random drive-bys that you see in the U.S. so much. For example, in the DC area, the black gangs get pretty freaked out by Salvadoran MS-13 gangs which often use a machete to kill rival gang members or to cut off fingers, hands and arms to send a message.

I’ve never been to London. I’m beginning to think that I need to do a European capitals tour while they still look generally like they used. Or maybe London, Paris, Berlin, etc., will follow the NYC model and push out the minorities, but something tells me that’ll be a lot harder to do when your main minority is Muslims and not blacks.

London’s murder rate sometimes exceeds NYC’s.

The problem is that the Metropolitan Police have greatly reduced their use of stop-and-search. They were instructed to do so by politicians, including Theresa May, who were tired of hearing that law-abiding black people were being repeatedly stopped by the police.

If the police brought back stop-and-search, and publicized the imprisonment of those found with knives, the high levels of knife crime would dissipate within a few weeks. If the police have to search more law-abiding white people in order to placate law-abiding blacks, it would be a price well worth paying.

The British government has made it clear the real target of the police is right-wing nationalists. Given as such, anyone right-wing should never cooperate with the British police.

That said, UK crime is still lower than it was during its 1990s peak, when New Labour flooded the streets with cops and began spying on everyone. So the UK is still a long way until it reaches the “ungovernability” stage at which the Army would be called out and repatriations start.

A repeat of the riots of 2011 could not be controlled with current police numbers. Presumably the UK could bring in police from the Continent during a recurrent event, to avoid the embarassment of the active duty Army on the streets.

  23. Anon[395] • Disclaimer says:
    @BB753

The most important part of the nationalist cause in the UK needs to be to block the building of new housing on environmental grounds, and insist on stringent enforcement of code. Without more housing, living costs in the UK will become increasingly unaffordable and immigrants will seek to live elsewhere. Stringent code enforcement would prevent incidents like Grenfell, and eliminate the tendency of immigrants to live in over-crowded apartments to reduce living costs.

I just got Back from Rome, and the subway\Metro\train stations are actually very, very good. Everything runs on time, very precisely on time, the trains are nice, very nice actually, and the subway cars are as good or better than any I have ever ridden in the US. Weirdly, all the taggers did their work in English for some reason, but the graffiti was 1/10th what you would have here.

The garbage collectors were on strike while I was there, and still there was less trash notifiable than any major US city. (And people clean up after their dogs, making it a huge improvement over any city in France.) Metro worked just fine, people were friendly and helpful, and the city was amazingly quiet for a big city.

There was one little neighborhood near Termini Station that had some hookers and what I would guess were a few drug dealers, and that was the worst neighborhood in Rome. Want to compare it to the worst neighborhood in, well, anywhere in the USA? Honestly, without Gypsies, they wouldn’t have crime in that city. Half the people in the city speak English or Spanish (curiously, nobody spoke French) so very easy to manage.

The biggest complaint I would have about Rome is that the WiFi rarely worked anywhere, and Romans do not live by their cell phones. Wait, should that even be a complaint?

it’s never going to be solved (without a Mussolini) and it will only get worse because the media and political class will never admit what the problem is let alone do anything about it.

until recently knife crime was a mostly black thing connected with youth gangs or drug dealing slowly getting worse* every year and the primary cause of white flight.

(*even though actual fatalities didn’t keep pace cos of the introduction of paramedics and other improved medial treatments)

what’s changed more recently is the introduction of huge numbers of refugees from 100s of different ethnic groups many of which are young men with zero chance of getting the kind of western lifestyle they want legally (cos they’re too dumb) so now all these different groups are fighting each other either in school gangs or older criminal gangs competing over drug territory.

Also, London has long had an enormous number of cameras on the streets to deter crime.

most of them are placed around highly public areas as a deterrent to keep the violence out of those places and contained in the areas of public housing (council estates) so the middle class didn’t see things were steadily getting worse. they don’t stop violence they just herd it.

So, London’s current problem with violent crime isn’t massive, but it ought to be embarrassing.

it’s a lot worse than you may think cos although the lethality is likely to remain much lower than the US the ubiquity is worse as the UK has far less housing segregation and the powers that be have been planting refugee colonies as widely as possible. i predict a mass exodus of the higher IQ populations as the big cities rapidly become unlivable.

(total contrast with Paris here with London as more of a “Lord of the Flies” experiment of all against all and Paris as a more straight forward north African Muslim vs native French ethnic fight)

Yes, what percentage of these murders and assaults with knives are committed by Muslims (almost all Pakistanis, apparently) and blacks? How many homicides, rapes, robberies, and aggravated assault would there be each year if London was all-white and 95% English? End all Muslim and black immigration and deport all blacks and Pakistanis, including Sadiq Kahn, and the problem would be solved when they were back whence they came and where they belong. I’d love to hear little Sadiq Kahn explains in concrete and thorough detail how the “problem” will be” solved in a generation” if the above measures aren’t enacted and the gangs and hordes of young Muslim and black males double or triple or quadruple?

  46. @Harry Baldwin

New York City’s homicide rate is roughly double that of London. This statistic is readily available.

Particularly snowy months of February and March this year may have temporarily suppressed NYC homicides as criminals decided to stay indoors and play GTA V, but once the weather warmed up, the usual homicide trends returned.

Steve, one thing you forget is the absolutely enormous level of economic inequality within London – which, often, is concentrated literally a stone’s throw distance from itself. In this way modern London resembles a Latin American city such as Sao Paolo more than a European city, thanks mainly to Economist style policies pursued with vigor by successive UK governments.

People forget that as recently as the 1960s London was a great manufacturing center producing all kinds of goods. The manufacturing industry employed the bulk of London’s enormous workforce. That industry has now entirely gone. Thus what we see now is a small minority if the extremely rich City workers and a vast vast panoply of casualized semi employed low wage low productivity black/brown third world rabble. There’s nothing in between, the talented white productive intelligent middle class baled out years ago.

Thus you have Grenfell Tower, an enormous aggrieved feral nasty black/brown underclass living in dire poverty and subsisting with crime and drug dealing – often selling to super rich city boys.

By way of example, Hackney, literally a 10 minute walk from the enormous wealth of the City, is Britain’s most ‘diverse’ borough. It is also it’s poorest, most welfare dependent, crime ridden and most murderous.

Needless to say the big banks and finance houses of the City have no use for Hackneyites.
Not even for mopping the floors, it seems.

Kind of. It depends whether you own your own house or not. In some sense khan is right, but probably not in the way he wants people to think he is. Most of the guys who commit these kind of crimes are in government housing, either directly in council estates or dss/section8. They’re protected from astronomical rents for the time being, but the former sitting on some very valuable land and the latter consume alot of tax money. This won’t last though, so, within a decade, a good number will be “persuaded” to move to the home counties or maybe even the midlands and west country.

Hackney is odd in that it doesn’t appear to be following the model that Steve writes about with regards to American cities. It’s gentrifying AND becoming much more diverse and violent. The people being moved out are long term social housing tenants – three generations – often Caribbean blacks – and tech and city workers are piling in at the same time as a much tougher set of African immigrants. London seems to develop in quarters, and at the moment the north east quarter is the hottest. West is dead, with the crowd of people who populated that part in the 80s now into their 60s. For young people the east is the place to be, even if that means dodging knife crime and acid attacks. It’s a big city, for the most part it’s avoidable. 57. Given current homicide trends, London is on track to have an annual homicide rate of 1.6 per 100,000 inhabitants.

For comparison, Non-Hispanic White Americans have a homicide rate of 2.9 per 100,000.

In England&Wales, last year’s homicide rate was 1.0 per 100,000.

“It would not surprise me though if London had more robberies per capita than New York City.”

This hasn’t been mentioned here otherwise. In heavily armed America, there are of course more killings as the ubiquity of firearms makes accidents and acts of passion more dire. But in exchange, it discourages petty criminality. When I’ve lived in armed, white American counties, I’ve left my doors unlocked and even left the keys in the car without problems. It’s nice not to have to carry a bunch of keys around. By contrast, even in overwhelmingly white British towns, I’ve always had to lock everything.

Of course, statistical comparisons are difficult because of differing definitions of crimes between different jurisdictions, and the variegated tricks authorities use to under-report them. Also, a proper comparison would have to control for ethnic differences first. It wouldn’t surprise me if white Americans aren’t already more peaceful than white Britons.

That’s a quote that will become more and more well known as the decades roll on.

London is pretty crazy, but I was in Paris a few weeks back and there is nothing on the scale of north Paris in London. It is quite staggering. In the years to come the control of the UK border at the channel due to Brexit will be considered one of the greatest lucky escapes in all of history. For obvious reasons it doesn’t get mentioned much now, but that will be a life saver for the country as Europe gets enveloped by African hordes. Getting out of the Gare du Nord for London will enable everyone to feel like Snake Plissken for a few hours.

Chicago was 37% black in 2000 and IIRC 40% in 1990. The reason the black population is declining is because Richard Daley and now Rahm Emanuel have made it their not-to-be-spoken-of policy to move low income blacks out of the prime real estate areas of Chicago and into the surrounding suburbs, like my wife’s childhood town of Park Forest which is now 60% black.

My original point stands, unless you have data that show cities with large populations of blacks that are violence free?

  80. @MikeatMikedotMike

I agree that no city, big or small, with a large black population has a low crime rate. Chicago’s downward trend in the black population is part of a nationwide trend of blacks moving to the suburbs. Daley and Emanuel just tore down the projects which pushed black gangs who controlled the projects, into neighborhoods controlled by other gangs. This is why there was a spike in crime for a few years, from a gang war. The projects sat on some potentially valuable land though. Blacks moving to the suburbs nationwide is what is creating places like Ferguson. It is also giving blacks opportunities as well, like with Lauren Underwood winning in the Suburban Chicago Congressional race. BTW, Park Forest was developed as an integrated development from its start.

  81. “Chicago’s downward trend in the black population is part of a nationwide trend of blacks moving to the suburbs. ”

This is a shockingly naive way to spin the issue. They are being moved out, by rich white liberals, aided in no smart part by the reckless expansion of section 8 application. Rich white liberals want to live in their Emerald city enclaves, free of the black people they claim to like, and instead move those blacks off to live with middle class whites whom they despise.

“Daley and Emanuel just tore down the projects which pushed black gangs who controlled the projects, into neighborhoods controlled by other gangs.

Off base. Daley and Emanuel tore down and continue to tear down projects to make themselves and their friends in real estate and development lots of money. A large % of those blacks were moved out of the city altogether, infesting dozens of suburbs all over northern Illinois. Your comment about gang violence is flawed as well, but is a separate ToD.

“BTW, Park Forest was developed as an integrated development from its start.”

LOL – I suggest you take a drive through there and see how that’s working out. It was never intended to become what it has.

“It is also giving blacks opportunities as well, like with Lauren Underwood winning in the Suburban Chicago Congressional race.”

Yeah, definitely worth the destruction the other 99% of those displaced blacks have wrought upon their new communities. You’re living in a fantasy world, my friend.

  82. One more generation and British crime rates might get closer to Chicago.
