But can we put that level of inequality and police oppression into some kind of perspective? How about comparing Ferguson, MO to liberal, enlightened Santa Monica, CA, which voted for Obama over Romney 35,991 to 9,772?

  1. Steve, you know that our enlightened rulers know it’s not that simple. See, you have to combine evidence of racial disparity with evidence of racist intent before federal intervention is justified. Now, if there were any evidence that any cop in Santa Monica ever made a joke about fried chicken, even once — BAM! Scolder Holder drops a boulder!

  2. Oh, this will be interesting.

I noticed liberal San Francisco arrests black people at more than ten times the rate of whites.

I am not quite sure of what I am looking at though. For example, does this mean that out of, say 1000 black residents of Santa Monica, 630 will be arrested? That does seem rather steep, indeed.

My wife got a parking ticket going to the doctor in Santa Monica recently. The fine was pretty outrageous.

  4. per 1000? gotta be a type. How can 637 people of 1,000 be arrested of any race in a year.

The Justice Department had to do Something. Anything.

So we see a vacuous and misleading dressing down of the Ferguson Police. I would fire them all for having such a bad outcome. And outsource to anyone. The protesters burned out the important commercial establishments … fast food and a 24 hour convenience store or whatever. Someone can simply close the PD. Public Relations is part of a PD, so they failed on that one. Should have leaked the strong armed robbery to smoking gun. The favorable grand jury testimony to someone. Then make a scene about leaks. I still don’t believe he doesn’t have a juvie record. And he couldn’t be the most popular guy around. He has to have some enemies.

And then …. pass it off onto New York or some where else …

And get rid of the PD before the justice department report.

    That sort of thing

  6. Was your wife arrested for that? They seem quite clear that it is arrest rates.

I got a rather large ticket for checking a voice mail from my office on my cell phone, using the speaker. It is illegal to use cell phones while driving in my state.

A friend of my wife also got cited for cell phone use and she didn’t pay the fine for a year or so. Then she felt guilty for not paying the fine and and decided to go to the police station to pay it off. Then, they arrested her for not paying it. She had to get bailed out. A nice elderly lady.

I think it was Victor Hanson who noted that the police go after these kinds of money-making things, while ignoring illegal immigrant shenanigans done on a much more outrageous scale, because they know they will never be able to collect any money from them.

  7. OMG!!! IS SANTA MONICA A SUNDOWN TOWN???

The extreme left-wing anti-white SJW , David Niewart who has been running the blog Orcinus for 15 years loves to write about “Sundown Towns” where blacks are routinely arrested for just loitering if found on the streets after dark.

    http://dneiwert.blogspot.com/2008/01/how-to-out-sundown-town.html

David Niewart is actually the long time front man for the extreme Stalinist Chip Berlet. After decades of being a somewhat shadowy disreputable figure on the extreme left, Berlet now writes for the Huffington Post and is the out in the open “puppetmaster” for lots online leftists.

Niewart is the equivalent of the SPLC on steroids and acid. He is famous on the the left for his obsession with “Eliminationists” the imminent genocidal threat to minorities and leftists posed by white neo nazis and the dreaded “Christianist” Religious Right.

How come David Niewart has not written about Santa Monica as being a “Sundown Town”???

What about his close comrade the blogger Heather “Digby” Parton who runs the blog Hullabaloo and now is one of the biggest SJW loons at Salon? Digby is famous for being the queen of Santa Monica leftists.

  10. Question for somebody familiar with Santa Monica.

Is the high rate of black arrests in Santa Monica perhaps related to any of the following:

A small patch of public housing that has been taken over as a prime drug corner. Police are constantly arresting a number of retail drug dealers?

A diverse public high school where there is constant fighting between NAM groups?

Shoplifters and exchange fraud artists who plague Santa Monica’s retail sector?

A persistent “homeless” population which takes advantage of Santa Monica’s homeless advocacy infrastructure and favorable amenities and surroundings?

  12. Jared Taylor has a good analysis of the DOJ Ferguson report.

    http://www.amren.com/news/2015/03/doj-uses-faulty-calculation-in-ferguson-report/

The Cultural Marxist Media is trying to make a big deal out of the higher rate of contraband found during traffic stops of whites than blacks in Ferguson.

For anyone who has lived in mixed racial areas, it is pretty common to see whites come into your neighborhood to buy drugs. Safer to buy drugs in an area that is still 30-60% white with a functioning police force than the heart of the ghetto. It is pretty easy for cops to pull over cars with out of area plates driven by whites in drug dealing zones.

I lived in the “Sheridan Park” section of Chicago’s sketchy Uptown neighborhood, not far west of where Steve lived close to Lakeshore drive . There would be a conga line of hipsters driving by my window looking to buy drugs. Lots of arrests. Never stopped white folks from coming back. Still it was a relatively safe area for both drug buyers and dealers. The drug dealing gangs knew they had a sweet deal living in the scattered site public housing and would make sure nobody messed with the civilian locals.

Before Mike Brown at least, I am sure it was far safer for whites to buy their drugs in Ferguson than North St. Louis.

  13. Steve, these numbers are bogus for the same reason the prison town numbers are bogus. Santa Monica is unaffordable to most LA blacks, and most of the arrested (likely black and white) are just visiting, but that’s averaged over an irrelevant denominator. Other rich touristy towns are going to have similar data artifacts. Madison or Berkeley or cities with black leadership and police forces would be more interesting, and likely show similar hypocrisies without being easily challenged.

  14. OH SNAP–Holder dun goofed, Steve backtraced it for the cyber police and state police; consequences will never be the same!

According to legend SM was sort of a staid, ticky-tacky-house, country-club-Republican town for, oh, 15 years between the Korean War and the Tom Hayden/Jane Fonda/Rollerblade mayor era. The beach site of L.A.’s private Jonathan Club, formed by Wm. McKinley 4 Prez boosters, is still located there (though probably not still suing the CCC over trespassing hippies on “their” sand)

Who’s to say the high-handed crackdown isn’t ordered by a remnant of WASP werewolves and RAND employees from the Kennedy Administration (as a plot to keep SM State Beach from turning into Huntington Beach aka Little Sarajevo)? Look up “Santa Monica 1920s Ink Well,” which probably merits an Oscar-nominated biopic or at a minimum visitation from the top Rolodex witch doctors for administering the racial scourging, I mean, healing

  15. There are Blacks in Santa Monica??

I guess there are: per this census quick facts page, 4% of the population is black. Obviously some of them behave very badly. Or maybe the Santa Monica PD is very racist. But hasn’t shot an unarmed black teenager. Recently anyway.

  16. Small PDs across the country have learned a lesson from Sanford and Ferguson, never trust the DOJ or CMM(Cultural Marxist Media) and that the clock is ticking while the body is still warm. The St Louis Post-Dispatch knew from early hours that the Brown shooting was quickly being stage managed by several notorious local race hustler hoaxsters. So did the Ferguson PD. PDs have to move faster the local race hustlers and the of course Sharpton’s National Action Network.

You now see PDs doing info dumps on perps straight to the web before the race hustlers can hit the CMM with the “gentle giant” , young scholar, didn’t do nuthing….. propaganda.

In the past PDs would at least attempt to be respectful the feelings of family members of the perps. Those days are over.

If you don’t pay big-dollar vehicle code tickets, throw away jury summons, etc. the sheriff can get a warrant out with your name on it, “nice elderly ladies” too. But aside from the inconvenience of being arrested and booked, nothing heavier comes after since the CA court system has been reduced to operating as a concierge practice the last 5 years.

  19. I think in those Santa Monica statistics, they use the term “resident” rather loosely. Most of those numbers are probably the black homeless bums from Downtown LA who vacation in Santa Monica during the summer on the cliffs over the beach. I’d imagine they probably get arrested at fairly high rates and then released.

The NYPD staged it’s work slowdown fairly recently to show it’s displeasure with de Blasio, minimizing arrests and writing less tickets. I wonder if that had any effect on day-to-day living. Did the crime rate go up, did people start driving recklessly with impunity, did the underclass start harassing people on the sidewalks even more than what they usually do? Or did everything carry on as before? Anybody know if it made any difference to the average person?

  34. I’m going to guess that a fair number of the black people arrested in Santa Monica don’t live there, but are visitors who get arrested there and thus counted in the ‘arrests per 1000 residents’ figure. Really, it would be more meanigful to look at the ‘arrests per 1000 residents’ figure across the metro area.

Or, if you wanted to examine the Santa Monica and Ferguson police departments in particular, compare their individual black/white arrest rates against the black/white population composition of the metro areas in which they sit – that should help counter the ‘commuter’ effect.

  36. With the decline of the Middle Class, and the end of its dominance, political dysfunction is reigning supreme. The Ferguson Saga is dispiritingly emblematic. We know longer seem to be able to move the ball, any ball, in the right direction. Worse, consciously or not, few any longer seem to want to try.

For example, a commenter in another thread recounts his amusement at a Police Chief acquaintance tormenting those caught in his stop sign/red light traps, and deigning not to arrest them for the purportedly numerous crimes committed in making the complaint.

No good has come from federalizing and nationalizing the fatal police shooting of Michael Brown. Even serious policing issues not distinguishable by race have moved in the wrong direction. Peace Officers keeping the peace are now Law Enforcement Officers enforcing the law. With the increase in salaries and pensions, along with early retirement, law enforcement is an ever more voracious revenue source. As you note, even non-moving violations now carry outrageous fines.

By turning this into a Ferguson-centric Race issue DOJ is sucking all the air out of what should be a reform effort at the local and state level. An even more glaring example was the burst of national media interest in militarization of policing at the moment Ferguson was experiencing civil disorder, including riots, looting and arson. Could there have been a worse context in which to engender the political will for reversing this trend?

  37. Hey, chums, Santa Monica is a small(ish) town with a big beach, a tourist pier, etc. The SMPD arrests visitors every day for drunken misbehavior on or near the beach, car prowling, and so-forth. The outsized arrest rates (not raw numbers) “per 1,000 residents” reflect the vast flux of criminal non-residents. SMPD also makes a lot of mutual-aid busts for LAPD (Venice is adjacent to SM) and CHP (I-10 ends where PCH goes beachfront for the run through Malibu to Port Hueneme).

Many Af-Ams who don’t live in SM manage to find their way into the city jail for a few hours.

  38. I think it was Victor Hanson who noted that the police go after these kinds of money-making things, while ignoring illegal immigrant shenanigans done on a much more outrageous scale, because they know they will never be able to collect any money from them.

The modern welfare state has very little leverage against people who are comfortable living in poverty (First World poverty, not absolute poverty). Illegal immigrants can’t be denied health care because nobody’s going to repeal the provision in EMTALA that requires hospitals to treat them. They can’t be deprived of assets if they don’t officially have any. They can’t be pressured by housing costs if they’re willing to live in arbitrarily large households. Perhaps most significantly in the long run, there is no limit on the number of children poor people can have if they’re comfortable raising children to a standard of living no higher than their own; the state guarantees that quantum of comfort to all children. (In contrast, it is very expensive for middle-class people to provide a middle-class environment for children.)

In this sense, it is precisely the virtue of illegal aliens that makes them problematic (if acceptance of relative poverty is indeed a virtue). Working-class Americans with bourgeois standards and expectations need to be protected from happy-go-lucky migrants who are satisfied with less. (Likewise, American tech workers need to be protected from H1-B types who are willing to endure indentured servitude in America.)

The idea that opposition to immigration is inherently anti-immigrant is a silly canard. It is the “strengths” of immigrants as much as their weaknesses that make immigration bad for the country.

(As for VDH, I must echo something Derb once wrote. He needs to be angrier about what has happened to the Central Valley.)

It’s much more likely because they’re “protected”, if you know what I mean. Police chiefs do what the town fathers want, which is more illegal aliens in most cases. Chiefs are also political animals. For a related example, look at attempts to impound cars from unlicensed drivers (most of which would probably be illegal aliens). How did that work out? Not too well:

    http://www.pbs.org/newshour/rundown/california-impounding-practices-change-for-unlicensed-drivers/

The fault for all this lies with those like VDH and many other leaders that just sit around entertaining their audience. While they’re doing that, those like “One Bill Gil” take smart action and get their way. When you’re tired of that, demand that your leaders (very broadly defined) finally *do* something rather than just entertain.

  46. I read the Plains Dealer on-line because three of my children live and work in the Cleveland area. The P.D. posted a video of a female Ohio state trooper being assaulted by a Black female. The trooper, who is white, was called to investigate a disturbance on a Greyhound bus. The trooper, who is standing on the bus stairs is attacked immediately by the women. The trooper would be seriously hurt or worse if a couple of people hadn’t come to her aid. A perfect video example of why police shoot to protect themselves. The D o J will not be investigating or commenting on this incident. Oh yeah, in Madison. Wisconsin another white police officer shot and killed an unarmed 19 year old ” gentle giant’ ( actual quote from a family member.) The youth attacked the officer who was responding to a report of an assault. The dead “child’ who would “never be violent or threatening” was on probation for his part in an armed home invasion. The protests have started and even schools are letting students out for the protest rallies. Madison is one of the most liberal cities in the nation. Waiting to see how the NYT handles this.

  48. That race is at the root of this mistreatment is attested to by statistics. For instance, the report tells us black drivers in Ferguson are more than twice as likely as white ones to be searched during traffic stops even though white drivers are significantly more likely to be found with contraband. It’s also attested to in emails sent by city officials, such as a “joke” about an African-American woman who has an abortion and is later sent a reward check from Crimestoppers.

Black men and women being manhandled, mistreated and misjudged by the “justice” system is the opposite of uncommon. To whatever degree we pretend the biggest issue here is the sins of one small town, we sanction that ongoing injustice and postpone a reckoning long overdue.

Ferguson is not an exception. It’s an example.

  49. Lib elites must be having a field day with stuff like Ferguson.

It’s like killing two birds with one stone.

Despite what Libs say, what are two things they fear most:

As Liberalism is controlled by Jews(and homos), they fear the traditional White Conservatism that is gentile and straight. So, they wanna put those folks on the moral defensive.

But even though Liberalism is allied with blacks, lots of white/Jewish/homo Liberals have big problems with black politics and black crime.

Well, how do you embarrass both the forces of White Conservatism and Black Culture/Politics of Crime?

You promote stuff like Ferguson. By turning it into a ‘racism’ issue, white conservatives are put on the moral and political defensive.
But eventually, surely the Liberal Media knew that the narrative would be blown to smithereens. Thus, black politics ends up with eggs on its face too.

Ferguson is bad for white conservatism that is accused of ‘racism’ and bad for black politics of rage that can’t find any evidence of real ‘racism’.
But it’s great for white/Jewish/homo Liberalism as it has embarrassed both white cons and angry blacks.

The homicide rate for black city residents is around 100 per 100k.

  57. VDH appears once a week on Greg Garrison’s talk radio show here in Indianapolis on WIBC. WIBC is part of NeoCon Jeff Smulyan’s Emmis (means Truth in Yiddish) Communications network. Emmis Communications is also home to that useless populist outrage entertainer and conspiracy peddler extraordinaire; Alex Jones.

Greg Garrison is Smulyan’s useful idiot. VDH talks a good game on Illegal immigration but he always stops short of recommending the one thing pro Open Borders establishment Republican traitors fear most; credible and serious primary challengers who understand the immigration issue inside and out and will put them in a corner forcing them to debate immigration.

I have seen an Indianapolis police officer, just an patrol man, with no money behind him end the career of the 2nd or 3rd most powerful and connected Republican state rep who was being pushed by Indiana’s TPTB to be congressman Dan Burton’s successor. His political career got shredded for being an Open Borders hack by just a local blue collar guy who knew what he was talking about. All it took was a hundred or so volunteers with tee shirts they bought themselves going door to door passing out flyers.

Indiana missed a huge opportunity with Richard Mourdock in 2012, but he did crush Richard Lugar, the most pro Open Borders Republican Senator at the time, in the primary in spite of being out spent by at least 8 to 1. It was great seeing somebody putting the pompous Lugar in his place.

Isn’t that also incorrect? They’re calculating percentage change when they should be calculating percentage difference (which is 22.22%).

It looks like the more liberal it is, the more blacks get arrested.

Maybe Wikipedia can shed some light:

    Good ol’ Wikipedia.

  62. Not sure if anyone in the other thread ever got around to posting the extracted map data. Here it is. I’m unsure of what some of those fields are.

The first sentence of the USA Today article reads, “When it comes to racially lopsided arrests, the most remarkable thing about Ferguson, Mo., might be just how ordinary it is.”

That sentence is summed up rather nicely, I think, by this chart. The chart graphs in descending order the “black arrest disparity ratio” of all 3,538 law enforcement agencies in the sample. There, in 1,582 place, is the apparently most racist police department in the USA…Ferguson, MO PD (red dot).

I also took a look at some of the departments with ratios under one (i.e. blacks under-arrested compared to non-blacks). Craighead County, AR is one of them and it doesn’t appear to house a penitentiary. The county is 14% black, but it appears something in the neighborhood of 30% of of county jail inmates are black. Either something is awry in the reporting or perhaps blacks are just significantly less likely to post bail…

  63. If I were rich, I would pay someone to set up a webpage where visitors could enter the name of any US city and then get a comparison between that city’s arrest rates and Ferguson’s arrest rates.

  64. The takeaway lesson from this is that if Republicans ever want to get rid of the laws allowing the DOJ to harass (mostly) innocent working class suburbs, the next time a Republican is president they need to use them to harass SWPL leftopias like Portland and Madison. Make the town police departments justify every black arrest. Let black criminals run free harassing the fey metrosexuals and LGBTQs. Build 100,000 units of low-income housing if every upper middle class suburb that voted for BHO. Git er done.

Thanks. Would it be possible to graph this with the vertical axis on a log scale so the handful of 40x points don’t use up most of the graph? And make Ferguson’s Red Dot bigger.

San Francisco is only 7 percent Black, but you find some small pockets in the city that racially look like Detroit. You can be on a block where everybody is Black and slanging drugs, but than walk a few blocks more and you are back in Asian and SWPL hipster territory again. That is how the Tenderloin area of downtown SF is.

Further cosmetic improvements probably possible but not my forte. The basic effect is achieved with making a scatter plot of all the data and then adding a second series consisting of only the single Ferguson data point.

Remember when a Black pastor in Ferguson claimed that the KKK burned down his church. That turned out to be another case of the boy who cries wolf.

If Whites were as racist as the Left Wing media claims we are, there would be no need to create fake hate crimes because there would be plenty of racist Whites actually committing real hate crimes.

Here is a graph of disparity vs demographics, from the pastebin data. No trend. To make the 3000 points visible, I did two things: I made opacity proportional to % black and I added noise to % black, using R’s jitter function (but you can still see discrete columns).

That is a great idea. Permanent DOJ investigations into the police departments and school districts in every liberal haven – San Francisco, Madison, Berkeley, New Haven, New York, LA, etc. And lots and lots of Section 8 vouchers for those places too.

Democrats obviously wage politics as war. Republicans should start doing likewise.

  80. I got a better idea and nobody gets hurt.

TPTB and TWMNBN have invested very heavily in buying up what use to be at least if not Non-PC media, media that was still unbiased enough to present different view points with out resorting to “Point and Sputter” tactics.

They know that the vast majority of Americans are opposed to their Ix3 agenda (Invade, Invite, Indebt). So They have create a media embargo.

What has happened to The Atlantic Monthly in the last decade and a half is a good example.

Still the question is who is still propping up the Cultural Marxist Media???

Ok, lefties in part, but if you check the comment sections at The Atlantic you find that they have to turn them off lots of times, for Mr Coates especially. Even Lefties have their breaking point.

What is allowing the Cultural Marxist Media to tread water, is that our own Parents, Grandparents and Aunts and Uncles still get the paper even it they only really care about the store ads and the sports section.

Don’t tell you don’t have a 4-5 year laptop you are not using anymore that could be upgraded to Linux for free and given to Grandpa. Get your relatives to stop funding the CMM!!!!

  81. I believe your commentary to be largely correct! Our local police forces have been weaponized by the Federal government and unjustly enriched by their ability to conduct search and seizures of people and property without a warrant.

What does this sound like? Does it remind you of the Nazi Gestapo, the SS, Nazi Brownshirts, etc.? The instruments of police power has been collectivized and centralized in the federal government. We are only one step away from a national police state. Federal officials toke advantage of a fearful people after 9/11 all in the name of keeping people secure. They have already gone way beyond that!
