Federal NAEP reading scores 12th graders 2013

A general assumption of the moderate conventional wisdom over the last half century is that average black performance is dragged down by specific impediments, such as poverty, crime, culture of poverty, parental taciturnity, lead paint, or whatever. One would therefore expect blacks without those impediments to score equal with whites.

But a close inspection of the social science data suggests that the world doesn’t really look like that. For example, above is the 2013 federal National Assessment of Educational Progress scores for 12th graders in Reading. Blacks who are the children of college graduates average 274, which is the same as whites who are the children of high school dropouts.

The Math Gap is the same:

Screenshot 2015-08-29 20.34.33

At the high school dropout level, The Gap in math is 16 points, but at the college graduate level, The Gap is twice as large: 32 points. That’s the opposite of what the conventional wisdom would imply.

So, basically, there are two theories left to account for this. How do we choose between them?

In the past, Western civilization tried to follow Occam’s Razor, which implies the Bell Curve theory of regression toward different means would be most likely.

But the term “Western civilization” is exclusionary and makes people feel bad. These days, we know that the highest form of thought is not using Occam’s Razor but shouting “Occam’s racist!”

So the only viable explanation is the Conspiracy Theory Theory of Pervasive Racism: people who think they are white are constantly destroying black bodies by saying words like “field” and “swing.” Or something. It doesn’t really matter what the specifics of the Conspiracy Theory Theory are since the more unfalsifiable the better.

Because Science.

  1. A related thought in re the Vester Flanagan incident. I believe it will last in both the collective unconscious but more importantly in the collective conscious. Everyone knows it was typical, not anomalous, which is why it will be so symbolic and resonant. After all, he IS the black male. Everyone knows him in every firm in every industry in America: a black guy who presents well, dresses well, is “articulate”, enthusiastic and usually charming. EVERYONE wants him to succeed. EVERYONE tries to help him. However sooner or later it becomes apparent that something is missing. It’s probably a function of IQ but it seems to present itself more as a kind of blur in the brain, a lack of focus that somehow prevents him from doing the one thing he was hired to do, whatever that is. At first it’s laughed of, then excuses are made, then it’s viewed with sadness, but finally all realize that he’s no good, he can’t do the work on time at the professional level required, and the excuses run out. He just doesn’t belong there. Of course he senses this, and soon comes to believe his “failure” is an expression of racism when in fact his employment is a pure example of anti-racism, of naive faith in something called diversity., which is meant to heal but ultimately only harms. The helping hands that have been extended him are forgotten; he retreats, becomes surly, more obnoxious, refuses to socialize except with other blacks (who may be at different stages of the same process) and thus you have current racist reality: a completely worthless employee drawing a high salary who is treacherous, malicious, bitter, angry, aggressive and almost impossible to fire. Most won’t got to guns like the vile bitch Vester, but they will degrade and ultimately destroy the institutions that reached out to them. One might even become president of the United States. And here’s what can be done about them: Nothing.

The problem is that it takes a decade or two of observation in a workplace with a significant number of blacks to see this. So, all through college and decades into work, people will not see this. And then they will remain silent for perhaps more decades. By that time, a new generation will begin the same process.

In the long run, people will see these things, but in the long run, they will be dead.

What Galton knew in 1873 has to be learned anew by each generation.

    Not quite.

    Sailer revised his theory.

He argued that the amount of government-enforced requirements on home loans could not have led to the super bubble.

Rather, the banks exploited the idea of 'ownership society' and cooked up schemes of lending that greatly expanded home loans way beyond the amount dictated by government.

Financial instruments ensured huge short-term profits by packaging and selling loans as derivatives.
Once that was possible, Wall Street saw massive increase in loans as a golden opportunity to rake in megabucks.

La Griffe du Lion published and analyzed similar data years ago:

STANDARDIZED TESTS: THE INTERPRETATION OF RACIAL AND ETHNIC GAPS

Black children from the wealthiest families have mean SAT scores lower than white children from families below the poverty line.

Black children of parents with graduate degrees have lower SAT scores than white children of parents with a high-school diploma or less.

One is tempted to say: The more things change, the more they stay the same.

I don't know if you've noticed or not, but our good buddy Steve isn't a reporter. He doesn't "cover" any murder. He covered the media response to both the Virginia shooting (in three blog entries) and the South Carolina shooting (in one blog entry).

If he had written two more entries about the stupidity of the coverage of Dylann Roof's shooting, would that make you decide he's not an evil racist? And would you then actually try to actually refute the facts he laid out in this entry? Why do I have a feeling that you wouldn't?

Fair point but I don't think Sailer contested that Roof is evil and crazy, a point made by the media and exploited to the point of calling a jihad on the southern flag.

But the media seem to be eager to flush Flanny down the memory hole.

One diff between Roof and Flanny.

Much of Roof's gripes was grounded in the reality of black-on-white crime even if his act was crazy, but Flanny's war with the hide-and-seek watermelon gang sounds totally ludicrous.
Yet, he's on the same wavelength as the PC culture that hallucinates KKK at Oberlin and Nazi rapists at UVA. Roof acted insane with sane facts, but Flanny acted insane with insane falsehoods.
Yet, guess which one of the two were more aligned with current PC.

I wonder. Did Flanny believe in the Invasion of the Body Snatchers scenario where white people place watermelons next to sleeping Negroes who then hatch out of the melons as uncle toms?

PC is like the madness in ATTACK OF THE MUSHROOM PEOPLE. With Flanny, it was the Watermelon People.

  6. Priss Factor [AKA "skiapolemistis"] says:

    Why are millennies so PC?

People are naturally tribal, and the most obvious tribe is racial or ethnic.

But such identity has been forbidden for whites.
Even when not forbidden, it’s been weakened by mass immersion in mindless pop/poop culture.
But the drive for group identity still exists.
Since ethnic identification is out, there is only ideological identification or ‘ideontity’.

It’s the only way they can feel as belonging to a group. What else do they have left to cling to?

Also, as elites now attend schools with different races and ethnic groups, they form communities along shared tastes and preferences than along ethnicity. But taste in music, movies, and videogames doesn’t offer satisfactory emotions of belonging.
The only thing left that lends a righteous sense of belonging is ideology.

So, tribal emotions are invested and subsumed in anti-tribal ideology.

  7. I find this fascinating. It has been many thousands of years since man began to purposefully breed animals and plants in order to produce more useful progeny. The earliest agrarians and pastoralists must have been familiar with the concept of regression to the mean, and also that the mean could be shifted through selective breeding. It is unfathomable that it is currently fashionable to pretend a level of ignorance that would have been ridiculed five thousand years ago, if not earlier. Yet this pretend ignorance of hereditary transmission applies only to man, not the universe of other living forms. The avowed anti-racist is ever eager to extoll upon the virtues of her highly intelligent border collie or heeler, or the nutritional benefit of native grains.

It’s not good enough to just defend against environmental folks who think that blacks can reach the level of whites, they should be attacked with proof that environment actually is in favor of blacks. The difference between the two cases being that blacks actually do have low SES on the whole unlike women, but not when you compare those with similar ability level. And they’re putting in more effort than whites.

The whole narrative needs to be overturned on its head and not just wait for them to acknowledge that they have been wrong.

But she found out that women are less likely to be first author, which must also be because sexism. The article goes on and on about the second point, burying the first point until the very end.

The Roanoke case is pretty much racial hatred, but you won't hear that from the Main Stream, except to explore the behavior of the Whites involved to see if they had it coming.

Your tactic is tiresome: allege an inequality, then demand it be fixed to your satisfaction; thus using other's sense of fair play to bully your viewpoint into the coverage. The iteration of this has given us the current sad state of discourse where we must apologize full time to the transgendered for all of previous human history not giving them equal time.
    , @Frosted Flake

...all this despite the fact that the Roanoke case is more likely a case of disgruntled employee taking it out on former co-workers where as the Dylan Roof case was the result of pure racial resentment (and perhaps the shooter’s sexual failings.)

Ah, the mind of the SJW in action. The black lunatic murdering scumbag was "most likely" just "a disgruntled employee," set off by all those microaggressions in the workplace: you know, words like "swing" or watermelon-flavored Slurpees, and hence maybe not fully justified really but understandable. Who wouldn't be set off, under the circumstances? And who wouldn't fax off a 32-page manifesto after the murders in which the poor disgruntled employee claimed he was only trying to start a race war. That's not "pure racial resentment," is it? Or, in any case, apparently not pure enough.

But you're not quite done yet, are you? The white lunatic was "perhaps" motivated by his "sexual failings"; so even though the black homosexual lunatic's apartment was well-stocked with not very clean sex toys with which he frequently fucked himself in the ass, this is an incidental matter slated for rainbow-colored celebrations, not a factor in the killer's misery or his motives.

You probably didn't notice, being preoccupied as you are with your own righteous indignation, but people generally read this blog as an antidote to the kind of bullshit that you're peddling - that is, selectively making excuses and accusing anyone who rejects the MSM-approved one-sided narrative as a racist. From my own admittedly inadequate vantage the only difference is that the white lunatic murdering scumbag didn't know his victims and the black one did, but that there was more than enough "pure racial resentment" to go around.

It doesn’t matter. It is all just a distraction anyway. Today they might say black’s poor scores are caused by poverty, next year it will be lead paint, the next year it will be racist teachers. The important thing is that each generation is given some explanation other than the obvious one. Meanwhile year after year the white population diminishes. Eventually they can stop thinking of new reasons because whites will be so powerless it won’t matter if they know the truth.

Related. Via Megan Mcardle. What she describes as “a team of superstar economists,” ran a $1 million experiment where they paid parents to do homework with their children. From the abstract:

This intervention had large and statistically significant positive impacts on both cognitive and non-cognitive test scores of Hispanics and Whites, but no impact on Blacks. These differential outcomes across races are not attributable to differences in observable characteristics (e.g. family size, mother’s age, mother’s education) or to the intensity of engagement with the program.

McArdle says, “There’s a long section where the researchers look for possible explanations, but they don’t really come up with any. I’m afraid I can’t, either. ”

    That's pretty interesting.

It's not uncommon down through history to have a farm population making a marginal living off land that can be more profitably turned to other uses, and then being driven to emigrate by insiders cashing in on the land. The most famous example are the Enclosures in Britain, but NAFTA's destruction of small corn farmers in Mexico is a more recent instance.

Africa is an enormous amount of land that hasn't been fully exploited for economic benefit. Galton suggested about 130 years ago that the Chinese would make far more off African land than Africans would. But now there are a billion Africans so they have to be redomiciled somewhere if the Africa is to be fully exploited.

Is NATO an economic interest? Africans get a lot of coverage due to the drownings in the Mediterranean. Syria Iraq and Afghan are entirely NATO caused. Libya either uncorked an existing problem or was the cause of a new one. Once again NATO.

What would Occam say NATO or China?

The Syrians could be immediately resettled in Syria if NATO stopped the war there and rebuilt the homes the war destroyed.

The backward focus also obscures the massive land grab in Africa today. Industrial agriculture and logging, both chinese and western, displace subsistence peoples into urban slums. But *this* neo-colonialism serves the interests of the economic upper stratum and is rarely reported upon as such. The american left, useful idiots that they are, see only the rear-view mirror of history and their own navels.

I'd also suggest the immigration pressure on Europe is an effort to redomicile this excess population (in service of the same economic interests).

“I’d also suggest the immigration pressure on Europe is an effort to redomicile this excess population (in service of the same economic interests).”

    That’s pretty interesting.

It’s not uncommon down through history to have a farm population making a marginal living off land that can be more profitably turned to other uses, and then being driven to emigrate by insiders cashing in on the land. The most famous example are the Enclosures in Britain, but NAFTA’s destruction of small corn farmers in Mexico is a more recent instance.

Africa is an enormous amount of land that hasn’t been fully exploited for economic benefit. Galton suggested about 130 years ago that the Chinese would make far more off African land than Africans would. But now there are a billion Africans so they have to be redomiciled somewhere if the Africa is to be fully exploited.

It is the ghetto lottery for Black people. A lot of Blacks dream of one day becoming wealthy off of claiming false racial discrimination.

    …sue…

A related thought in re the Vester Flanagan incident. I believe it will last in both the collective unconscious but more importantly in the collective conscious. Everyone knows it was typical, not anomalous, which is why it will be so symbolic and resonant. After all, he IS the black male. Everyone knows him in every firm in every industry in America: a black guy who presents well, dresses well, is "articulate", enthusiastic and usually charming. EVERYONE wants him to succeed. EVERYONE tries to help him. However sooner or later it becomes apparent that something is missing. It's probably a function of IQ but it seems to present itself more as a kind of blur in the brain, a lack of focus that somehow prevents him from doing the one thing he was hired to do, whatever that is. At first it's laughed of, then excuses are made, then it's viewed with sadness, but finally all realize that he's no good, he can't do the work on time at the professional level required, and the excuses run out. He just doesn't belong there. Of course he senses this, and soon comes to believe his "failure" is an expression of racism when in fact his employment is a pure example of anti-racism, of naive faith in something called diversity., which is meant to heal but ultimately only harms. Most won't got to guns like the vile bitch Vester, but they will degrade and ultimately destroy the institutions that reached out to them. One might even become president of the United States. And here's what can be done about them: Nothing.

Ah, the mind of the SJW in action. The black lunatic murdering scumbag was “most likely” just “a disgruntled employee,” set off by all those microaggressions in the workplace: you know, words like “swing” or watermelon-flavored Slurpees, and hence maybe not fully justified really but understandable. Who wouldn’t be set off, under the circumstances? And who wouldn’t fax off a 32-page manifesto after the murders in which the poor disgruntled employee claimed he was only trying to start a race war. That’s not “pure racial resentment,” is it? Or, in any case, apparently not pure enough.

But you’re not quite done yet, are you? The white lunatic was “perhaps” motivated by his “sexual failings”; so even though the black homosexual lunatic’s apartment was well-stocked with not very clean sex toys with which he frequently fucked himself in the ass, this is an incidental matter slated for rainbow-colored celebrations, not a factor in the killer’s misery or his motives.

You probably didn’t notice, being preoccupied as you are with your own righteous indignation, but people generally read this blog as an antidote to the kind of bullshit that you’re peddling – that is, selectively making excuses and accusing anyone who rejects the MSM-approved one-sided narrative as a racist. From my own admittedly inadequate vantage the only difference is that the white lunatic murdering scumbag didn’t know his victims and the black one did, but that there was more than enough “pure racial resentment” to go around.

I'm not arguing that lead is the chief cause, just that it is a factor, one among many. Sailer's 50/50 rule of thumb is a good one here. Some causes are external, such as lead and economic policies, and some genetic.

One aspect of the genetic angle that I rarely see discussed is the high likelihood that American blacks are the result of severe dysgenic selection pressure. Think: most slaves were prisoners of war, criminals, or other sorts of people not clever enough to escape being enslaved. They were then subjected to several centuries of having their best and brightest cut down. This might be a greater factor than whatever was in the African genome to begin with. That's just my guess though.

(Yes, whites were similarly plagued, which is why lead was removed from paint and gasoline, but not many now live in urban slums.)

There's something wrong here: why aren't the Asian numbers any higher than the white numbers? And, even more strikingly, how can it be that the numbers for children of Asians who didn't finish high school are no higher than those of the corresponding white kids? Many Asian kids' parents have a lot on the ball but in their home countries education beyond the basic level is tightly limited by examinations and family hardship.

English is likely not the language spoken at home for many of the Asians, especially recent immigrants. Some of the 12th graders may be immigrants themselves.

The math scores (if you click on Steve’s link) do show higher numbers for Asians, by about 5-10%.

No question modern American popular Black culture is toxic to learning and achievement. Black kids get picked on by other Black kids if they do too well in school or “talk white.” If you’re a Black kid, even if your parents are college graduates, you are still subjected to this cultural milieu.

On the other hand, if you are a Black kid with college graduate parents and are sent to an elite high school (Punahou perhaps) and have zero connection with Black culture (and zero connection with your one Black parent) we know that you can do quite well.

...all this despite the fact that the Roanoke case is more likely a case of disgruntled employee taking it out on former co-workers where as the Dylan Roof case was the result of pure racial resentment (and perhaps the shooter’s sexual failings.)

It’s not an excuse — this Roanoke murder is as likely a case of disgruntled employee violently lashing out as it is a case of racism. You racist white nationalists are trying to spin this episode into one of pure race hatred, like the Dylan Hunt shooting, which you guys weren’t eager to discuss and which clearly was the result of race hatred. Also: there were reports that a girl Dylan Roof liked dated a black guy.

Actually, we're not. We're pointing out that his murder was inspired by "anti-racism" and by the notion that black people are the constant victims of racist microaggressions, which is the exact point of view that has been fomented by the media and persons such as yourself.

There's not much point in accusing us of "spinning" it that way, since that's exactly the way the shooter "spun" it in his manifesto.

…you guys weren’t eager to discuss and which clearly was the result of race hatred. Also: there were reports that a girl Dylan Roof liked dated a black guy.

Dylann Roof (note the girlish spelling) also had a black drinking buddy. His race hatred, however real, was clearly a part-time affair. Bipolar, you might say.

(Did Roof want to date the girl, or the black guy?)

Just as the favorite adjective of those who hate the Catholic Church is "antichoice", the favorite term of those who really despise blacks is "homophobic".

    , @D. K.
Disgruntled employees do not generally wait around town for just over two and a half years after their firings, before "exploding" in rage at the supposed injustice. They also tend to take out their revenge against the people who actually fired them, or those who otherwise had caused them to get fired, not against former interns who subsequently succeeded where they had failed.

Regardless, the murderous Black homosexual suicide at issue made clear in his "manifesto" that it was his hatred of Whites, especially White women, and heterosexuals that was his motivation in killing his two murder victims, along with shooting a sixty-two-year-old White woman, who was a total stranger to him, in the back, and presumably leaving her for dead; he was answering for the earlier massacre, by his own explicit admission, and likewise hoping to ignite a race war in America.

As for the Charlotte killer, he had close Black friends, who did not consider him to be a racist. Your supposed "reports" implying that he killed nine Black churchgoers because of an unrequited crush on a girl who instead chose to date a Black guy is ridiculous. His own "manifesto" explained why he chose to do what he did. In short, he learned that politically correct pieties and the racial realities have next to nothing in common. Most crime, most violent crime, and most interracial crime, in the United States, find Black folk as the perpetrators, with White-on-Black crime being unusual, and especially so after filtering out Hispanics and non-European Whites from the White category. If White racists are always sexually inadequate, as you anti-racists are always claiming, why is it that Blacks commit such a high proportion of rapes, and the overwhelming majority of interracial rapes, in the United States. White-on-Black rapes are close to nonexistent.

Let us assume, despite all of the above, however, that you, by sheer happenstance, are correct, and Steve Sailer, in his heart of hearts, is an unmitigated racist: So what?!? How does that change the statistics reported in this blog post, let alone a century of IQ testing, or thousands of years of direct experience? Would Steve Sailer's being the Grand Wizard of the Los Angeles Ku Klux Klan explain why the most-privileged Blacks, in terms of socio-economic status, end up performing as if they were the least-privileged Whites, whether on measures of academic achievement or on IQ tests themselves?
    , @Frosted Flake
Your special pleading is a repugnant as it is pathetic: How desperately you want the Roanoke killer to be a "disgruntled employee" despite the mountain of evidence in the killer's own words that he sought revenge for Charleston and wanted to start a race war, that his paranoia caused him to interpret the word "field" - as in "reporter in the field" - as a sly racist allusion to "cotton fields." That is, by his own account, he was motivated by race and a desire for racial revenge. And the only reason that you cannot accept this fact is because the perpetrator is black, and hence a forbidden thought.

Yet oddly, by your account Dylan Roof, the white man motivated by "pure race hatred" (a fact, by the way, that no one on this blog, to my knowledge, has ever disputed) may or may not have had some sort of romantic disappointment as a motive. Is not romantic disappointment a motive in many killings? Does this assertion of yours not undermine your assertion of pure race hatred as the motive? I point this out only to underline the contradictions and fallacies that undermine your assertions. I find it about as plausible as the Roanoke killer being a disgruntled employee.

But this is all you have, isn't it? A retreat into a kind of silly make-believe with good SJWs on one side and nasty iSteve readers on the other when confronted by uncomfortable facts - hence those who don't wish to entertain the notion that Vester Flanagan was just another "disgruntled employee" are transformed by your magic brush into "racist white nationalists," as though anyone who heeded Flanagan's own words could be anything else. You need to get out of your bubble. There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy.

A more interesting study would be whether black children raised by white parents or white families like Obama, for example, do better academically than children raised in black families in the same communities and schools.

My impression here in Florida is that while inherited IQ probably does play a part in black low achievement this is overwhelmed by the effect of social pressures, poor child raising practices, and so on. For example a child whose parents have a very restricted vocabulary that has few literary or scientific words is probably going to be off to a slow start in the education system.

I have a bit of a dog in this fight as I have a black step-daughter and daughter aged 6 and 2 and would like them to be able to get decent jobs later on, or marry into wealth. So far they are both bilingual in English and Spanish and enjoy going to school. Right now they are trying hard to convert me to Christianity. Hopefully they will not be doomed to a life of penury in the ghetto, God willing.

When I lived in HI virtually all of the black males that would have been in high school (and there were very few) were there because a parent was in the military. This means that at least one of the parents of each high school age black male in HI would have passed an Armed Forces Aptitude Test which requires a higher than average (for blacks) score for admission if translated as an IQ score. I'm guessing the pool of black males of high school age in HI is higher quality than the average for that cohort nationally.

Images of people scrambling over barbed wire fences in Calais or crossing the Mediterranean in fishing boats have dominated the media over the last few months. And a debate has even emerged about the very words used to describe people.

News website al-Jazeera has decided it will not use migrant and “will instead, where appropriate, say refugee”. An online editor for the network wrote: “It has evolved from its dictionary definitions into a tool that dehumanises and distances, a blunt pejorative.” A Washington Post piece asked if it was time to ditch the word.

The subtitle of this post should be: Why Django Matters

If we have a culture, the majority of whom aren’t that literate, getting their history lessons from Django, 12 Years a Slave, and the NWA movie, and watching it over and over again at home, the chances of random acts of violence towards those who are showcased as the antagonists of these movies, will rise significantly.

I went to the SAG screening of Django. Afterwards, my friend asked me what I thought of the movie. I said, “this movie is going to get a lot of black people, and some white people killed.” He said, “naw, naw. it’s just entertainment.” I said, “That’s easy for you to say. “At 37:52, Stefan Molyneux talks about your theory (without naming you) on the housing crash.”

    Not quite.

    Sailer revised his theory.

He argued that the amount of government-enforced requirements on home loans could not have led to the super bubble.

Rather, the banks exploited the idea of ‘ownership society’ and cooked up schemes of lending that greatly expanded home loans way beyond the amount dictated by government.

Financial instruments ensured huge short-term profits by packaging and selling loans as derivatives.
Once that was possible, Wall Street saw massive increase in loans as a golden opportunity to rake in megabucks.

Fair point but I don’t think Sailer contested that Roof is evil and crazy, a point made by the media and exploited to the point of calling a jihad on the southern flag.

But the media seem to be eager to flush Flanny down the memory hole.

One diff between Roof and Flanny.

Much of Roof’s gripes was grounded in the reality of black-on-white crime even if his act was crazy, but Flanny’s war with the hide-and-seek watermelon gang sounds totally ludicrous.
Yet, he’s on the same wavelength as the PC culture that hallucinates KKK at Oberlin and Nazi rapists at UVA.

Just out of curiosity, what are the odds that two of the white perpetrators of mass shootings in the last 20 years would be named “Dylan”?

The odds that two of them would be named Dylan might be low, but the odds that two of them would have the same name might be surprisingly high:

In probability theory, the birthday problem or birthday paradox[1] concerns the probability that, in a set of n randomly chosen people, some pair of them will have the same birthday. By the pigeonhole principle, the probability reaches 100% when the number of people reaches 367 (since there are 366 possible birthdays, including February 29). However, 99.9% probability is reached with just 70 people, and 50% probability with 23 people.

OT, a little--the word "migrant" is raciss, too, as of now:

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-34061097

The battle over the words used to describe migrants

Images of people scrambling over barbed wire fences in Calais or crossing the Mediterranean in fishing boats have dominated the media over the last few months. And a debate has even emerged about the very words used to describe people.
    ...
News website al-Jazeera has decided it will not use migrant and "will instead, where appropriate, say refugee". An online editor for the network wrote: "It has evolved from its dictionary definitions into a tool that dehumanises and distances, a blunt pejorative." A Washington Post piece asked if it was time to ditch the word.

In Britain the charity the Spastics Society changed their name to the post-modern Scope, because kids were using “spas” as an insult. Of course, in no time the tykes started using “scoper” instead.

“So the only viable explanation is the Conspiracy Theory Theory of Pervasive Racism: people who think they are white are constantly destroying black bodies by saying words like “field” and “swing.” Or something.”

Or something like “have a nice day,” which, according to the account I read this morning in the NY Daily News, our black, gay shooter Vester Flanagan thought was racist when said by a bar’s employees to departing customers:

“The unhinged diner unleashed verbal hell on Jack Brown’s Beer & Burger Joint workers after a visit about three or four months ago, criticizing them for telling customers to “have a nice day” instead of “thank you.” ”

I do as well. I believe northern blacks do better than southern blacks on IQ tests. It makes sense that those blacks who had the wherewithal to remove themselves from the suboptimal conditions of the South under any period preceding the end of Jim Crow were likely more capable than those who remained behind on average. This is particularly true of those whose families relocated prior to the end of WWI when many conditions, including legal barriers erected by northern states, made migration a difficult undertaking. BTW - ever notice that the existence of large Klan chapters in northern states is never mentioned in combination with black migration patterns out of the South?

A more interesting study would be whether black children raised by white parents or white families like Obama, for example, do better academically than children raised in black families in the same communities and schools.

My impression here in Florida is that while inherited IQ probably does play a part in black low achievement this is overwhelmed by the effect of social pressures, poor child raising practices, and so on. For example a child whose parents have a very restricted vocabulary that has few literary or scientific words is probably going to be off to a slow start in the education system.

"I’d also suggest the immigration pressure on Europe is an effort to redomicile this excess population (in service of the same economic interests)."

    Don’t forget:
“The 5th president of Zambia Michael Sata said “We want the Chinese to leave and the old colonial rulers to return. They exploited our natural recourses too, but at least they took good care of us. They built schools, taught us their language and brought us British civilization. At least western capitalism has a human face; the Chinese are only out to exploit us.”

This means that at least one of the parents of each high school age black male in HI would have passed an Armed Forces Aptitude Test which requires a higher than average (for blacks) score for admission if translated as an IQ score. I am a military brat. The parents of the black high school kids in Hawaii have made the military a career and have no problems following rules and staying on task and this is passed down to their children.

I make it a point to not bring up IQ because it gets so many people upset (outside of this forum). I tend to blame the racial achievement gap on culture which surprisingly still gets some people upset. But yes, you are right. Once your IQ reaches a certain level, you figure out how to stay out of trouble and engage in activities that will benefit you in the future.

It was a particular problem for Obama to make it sound in Dreams from My Father like Hawaii was a hotbed of anti-black prejudice, when Hawaii’s blacks are near the state average on most measures that people care about because they’re mostly related to the military.

When I mapped absence-of-adult-male in children's households off the 1990 census, I found that 46 states' black rate was worse than the worst white state. But the black rates for Hawaii and North Dakota were better than the best white state.

It's not just that those states are military, they're smart military. Air Force in ND, Air Force, Navy and Coast Guard in HI.

Also, Oahu is a prime billet. Inasmuch as servicemen have a choice, it attracts the best. In my USCG class, the top guy got Honolulu. I was second, and had to settle for NYC.

  100. Steve,
I don’t understand your position on conspiracy theories. If blacks were scoring low in schools run by Turkish expatriates, would it be evidence of anything?

"So the only viable explanation is the Conspiracy Theory Theory of Pervasive Racism: people who think they are white are constantly destroying black bodies by saying words like “field” and “swing.” Or something."

Or something like "have a nice day," which, according to the account I read this morning in the NY Daily News, our black, gay shooter Vester Flanagan thought was racist when said by a bar's employees to departing customers:

"The unhinged diner unleashed verbal hell on Jack Brown's Beer & Burger Joint workers after a visit about three or four months ago, criticizing them for telling customers to "have a nice day" instead of "thank you." "

    http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/vester-flanagan-outraged-common-phrases-racist-article-1.2340393

Which is why I avoid phrases like "have a great day" which some may take to be "have a grate day" and rub them (or rather scrape them) the wrong way. That is why I am thinking of starting a new organization modeled after BLM which will be AWM ("All Words Matter").

Perhaps he heard it as “have a nice gay” and found it “homophobic”.

Actually, all five services have a significant presence on Oahu. The Army has the 25th Infantry Division (Tropic Lightning) at Schofield Barracks, and the Marines have a significant aviation presence at Kaneohe Marine Corps Base. And yes, Reg, before you even say it, the Army and Marine kids are smart! These aren't the draftees of pre-1973...

Here's a line from a letter to the editor published in the NYT on April 10, 1990 from a female midshipman pushing back against an earlier writer's assertion that Pat Schroeder's proposal to put women in combat would lead to rape:

The arguments you and several others have presented against women in combat are valid ones. But the "license to rape" issue that you mention is a problem of war and not a problem of women in war.

I'm not sure time has supported the good midshipman on her proposition. Though, in fairness, her fear seemed to center on rape committed by the enemy.

One of my high school history teachers, a relentlessly learned man, told my class that during the Reconstruction Era one of the largest Klan chapters in the country was headquartered in Middleboro, MA.

I’d wager half the people randomly polled on the street would be unaware of the toxicity of lead.

But not those gangbangers with their gats, eh?

Why are poor whites not similarly plagued? Are the landlords doubly racist?

I’m not arguing that lead is the chief cause, just that it is a factor, one among many. Sailer’s 50/50 rule of thumb is a good one here.

That’s just my guess though.

(Yes, whites were similarly plagued, which is why lead was removed from paint and gasoline, but not many now live in urban slums.)

It's not good enough to just defend against environmental folks who think that blacks can reach the level of whites, they should be attacked with proof that environment actually is in favor of blacks. The difference between the two cases being that blacks actually do have low SES on the whole unlike women, but not when you compare those with similar ability level. And they're putting in more effort than whites.

The whole narrative needs to be overturned on its head and not just wait for them to acknowledge that they have been wrong.

Commenting partly so I can find this again later.

You didn’t go far enough pointing out what’s nuts about that article in the Chronicle. She decided to perform the study expecting to find that women are more likely to be first author, because sexism. But she found out that women are less likely to be first author, which must also be because sexism. The article goes on and on about the second point, burying the first point until the very end.

If your theory perfectly explains both the null hypothesis and the falsification of the null hypothesis, it ain’t science.
