Thomas Jefferson Day has been canceled for Toxic Male Whiteness in Charlottesville, where Jefferson invented the American college campus with his landscape design for the University of Virginia.

From Associated Press:

Charlottesville scraps Jefferson’s birthday as holiday

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — Charlottesville, Virginia, will no longer celebrate Thomas Jefferson’s birthday as an official city holiday and instead will observe a day recognizing the emancipation of enslaved African-Americans.

The city council voted Monday night to scrap the decades-old April 13 holiday honoring the slave-holding president and Founding Father. Charlottesville will now mark Liberation and Freedom Day on March 3, the day U.S. Army forces arrived in the city in 1865.

… The legacy of Jefferson, the nation’s third president, author of the Declaration of Independence and founder of the University of Virginia, has been a component of that ongoing debate.

As I wrote in “Carved Upon the Landscape” in 2017:

Why the ever-increasing hatred for America’s past?

You might think that, on the whole, American history is, relative to world history, fairly impressive and heartening.

But it’s precisely American history’s virtues, more than anything else, that enrage so many people these days against the great men of the American past. While the Founding Fathers might be nominally condemned for their misdeeds, they are largely resented for their accomplishments.

Human history suggests that people are naturally prejudiced in favor of their own ancestors, because the accomplishments of their forefathers reflect well upon them.

America is increasingly dominated by people with shallow roots in this country. So it’s hardly surprising that they find it insulting to reflect upon what Americans not related to them once accomplished. Instead, it’s heartening to denounce the Founding Fathers as bad men whose descendants deserve their displacement.

Punching down is safer and more fun than punching up. Hence the less dominant become the founding stock, the more their lineage is abused. …

With Charlottesville much in the news, I’m reminded of one of Jefferson’s many accomplishments: He invented the modern American college campus.

Two centuries ago in Charlottesville, Jefferson more or less invented one of the most profitable landscapes of the 21st century. When ambitious Tiger Mothers in Seoul and Bangalore pore over college catalogs looking for the ideal campus for their scions, they demand what Jefferson provided Virginia two centuries ago. …

On the other hand, it drives many current America elites to angst that their ancestors didn’t beat Jefferson to the punch. In her much-acclaimed (at the time) Rolling Stone article “A Rape on Campus,” Sabrina Rubin Erdely recounted how Charlottesville’s Jeffersonian tradition made her feel unsafe:

“After one alumna was abducted from a dark, wooded section of campus and raped in 1993, she says she asked a UVA administrator for better lighting. “They told me it would ruin Jefferson’s vision of what the university was supposed to look like,” the alum says. “As if Thomas Jefferson even knew about electric lights!””

After all, we all know that Jefferson was a rapist of a black body, so what’s a night of broken glass if it takes Jefferson’s heirs down a notch or two? Erdely exclaimed:

“Wahoos are enthralled to be at UVA and can’t wait to tell you the reasons why, beginning, surprisingly, with Thomas Jefferson, whose lore is so powerfully woven into everyday UVA life that you practically expect to glimpse the man still walking the grounds in his waistcoat and pantaloons. Nearly every student I interviewed found a way to mention “TJ,” speaking with zeal about their founding father’s vision for an “academical village” in the idyllic setting of the Blue Ridge Mountains. They burble about UVA’s honor code, a solemn pledge not to lie, cheat or steal…”

Honor codes strike Sabrina Rubin Erdely as racist.

Someone should write a thinkpiece about how Jefferson loved to have sex with black girls and how the take home message of Jefferson’s life is that black girls are highly desirable. For that alone Jefferson can be rehabilitated as the great booster of black girls’ self-esteem and the validator of black girls’ beauty.

A former Federal Bureau of Prisons worker and college lecturer was arrested for a series of “horrific” sex attacks in the Sacramento area in the 1990s – thanks to a novel DNA technique, authorities said.

Mark Manteuffel, 59, was arrested at his home in Georgia on Friday, Police Chief Daniel Hahn said at a news conference on Monday. His case was the first in California that was originally filed against a John Doe using only a DNA profile and investigators were able to find him using genetic genealogy, which allowed him to be tracked through family members, according to Hahn.

Good idea! Mind you, there’s no proof that TJ ever had relations with a black girl (even Sally Hemings) but granted that won’t matter one whit to the woke.

Great point. Somewhat related is that European Americans, who are not English, can still look at guys like Washington and Jefferson, and imagine being connected to them. I doubt that happens much with non-Europeans, Twinkie excepted.

If I went to a nation like China, I’d probably find it hard to connect with the great Chinese of the past. I don’t think I could ever look at them and feel a part of it. But with our Founders, and with Europeans of all stripes, I don’t think that is a problem.

  9. Meanwhile, over in England a new scheme aims to saddle all senior white academics with POC “reverse mentors” to help make them less sharp, less effective, less, you know, white.

Cambridge University is running a reverse mentoring” scheme for staff to combat “structural racism”.

Under the project, white senior academics and management staff are assigned one of their black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) colleagues as a mentor in order to encourage “institutional change” at the university.

It is part of a raft of initiatives that the university’s equality and diversity department has introduced…

People have been warning about this for years. They ignored the threat when it was only Confederate monuments. But given many of the Founders owned slaves, it was not going to take long to lead to them. And now we have the Betsy Ross flag whose crime was simply existing during slavery.

So long as we don’t push back, it will continue, and yes they will rename Washington DC. This will continue so long as the adults in the room abdicate their responsibility.

What’s puzzling is that the side with both the guns and the majority is getting rolled in this contest. On paper this should not be happening .

[ Had to hunt for this, because Google only wants to return results for torture in Europe. Can’t imagine why. https://www.chinasage.info/torture.htm ]

Now, some will maintain that we’re different, as “America is the Land of Immigrants” or some such, because of course everyone in China and India descended from distant ancestors who sprang forth spontaneously from the native soil, but no matter.

  20. Thomas Jefferson is, IMO, the best of all of the wise Founding Fathers of this country. A day off is a day off, I guess, as the city not only wanted to get their digs in with the Afro garbage, but the city workers would not take to kindly to losing this holiday.

Most of us, even residents of Charlottesville, can take this our own way. Did anyone really celebrate anyway? It’s what gets taught and what goes on in the schools to indoctrinate the children that is the real problem. Teach your children about Thomas Jefferson, or at least mention him. Get the kids out of the government indoctrination camps as soon as is practical. At the college level, well, iSteve and his commenters have hammered this one ad infinitum.

  35. Even when it was being built, between 1939 and 1943, the Jefferson Memorial was made politically correct. The inscriptions on one wall are strung together from sentences he wrote in different contexts. For example, it says,

Indeed I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just, that His justice cannot sleep forever. Commerce between master and slave is despotism. Nothing is more certainly written in the book of fate than that these people are to be free.

But immediately after that last sentence, Jefferson wrote,

Nor is it less certain that the two races, equally free, cannot live in the same government. Nature, habit, opinion has drawn indelible lines of distinction between them. It is still in our power to direct the process of emancipation and deportation peaceably and in such slow degree as that the evil will wear off insensibly, and their place be pari passu filled up by free white laborers.

Boyd, one of his professors at the Louisiana military academy and eventual friend, that he considered slavery in the South “the mildest and best regulated system of slavery in the world, now or heretofore.”

“The people of Louisiana were hardly responsible for slavery, as they had inherited it,” Sherman assured his audience. Further, while the well-being of field slaves might depend on “the temper and dispositions of their masters and overseers,” Sherman thought slaves who worked in family homes were “probably better treated than any slaves on earth.”

Shakespeare is great, but I bet there are figures in Chinese literature who could replace him. Chinese music is complex and has a long history, too.

You may say ‘what about Greek and Roman art and literature, still venerated today?‘ – but the Brits were living in huts when the Greeks and Romans were great, and thought of themselves as their successors, at least in cultural and scientific terms. But 1913 made senators directly elected instead of being appointed by the state legislatures, established the Federal Reserve, and made a proportional income tax constitutional. My point is the legacy of the ‘founders’ was basically erased in 1913 (which as they say was a long time ago), so why not pull down the silly statues? Aren’t statues a shoddy tribute in the internet age anyway? After 1913 Jefferson and the rest become sort of militant Protestant ethnic heroes to British Americans, excluding Catholic Irish, completely divorced from their actual enlightenment achievements.

I personally think the Greecian temples to Jefferson and Lincoln should be returned to their rightful owners, people who practice those religions, and the statues of Jefferson and Lincoln replaced by Zeus and Athina or whichever [email protected] you like. The other thing is that the Western symphonic tradition may be dying. At the age of 16 or so I was occasionally listening to Beethoven and Bach just because a lot of adults at school and on radio/TV seemed to rate them very highly.

UVA is celebrating its 200th anniversary this year. The school’s honor code until very recently had only one punishment (“the single sanction”) for an honor violation, which was expulsion. Though they recently added something called “Information Retraction” which allows a student to confess to a violation, be suspended for a year, then return to the university.

Anyway, UVA’s alumni magazine recently published the results of a study reviewing 100 years of data pertaining to the honor system. Among other nuggets, it shows that Asians cheat at about 5x the rate you’d expect given their enrollment (well, unless as I did you already expected Asians would cheat a lot more). Shape up Twinkie! Someone get Yan Shen on the line…

Asian and Asian American students are the most over-represented race in the sanction data. In 2015, they constituted 10 percent of the student population but, from 2014 to 2016, 53 percent of students sanctioned.

Thomas Jefferson enslaved his own children. Let that sink in for a moment. That was just one of his many sociopathic tendencies:

    Thomas Jefferson: America’s Founding Sociopath

    https://consortiumnews.com/2014/07/04/thomas-jefferson-americas-founding-sociopath/

Jefferson cannot be excused as a product of his time because there were people in his time who knew better and pleaded with him to desist from his malign conduct.

Jefferson’s stature will continue to diminish with time until, finally, few people will honor him. He only has himself to blame.

Chinese music is not complex in the right wasy. It’s just like all other world folk music in lacking a tonal system, which is what enabled Western music to conquer the world.

Chinese literature is another thing. I’ve read a few of their classics, and they’re okay. But you knie, Shakespeare wasn’t imposed upon people by force of arms. It gets translated and performed and people have to go see it and enjoy it. If there is something in Chinese literature that could do the same, you think it would’ve been promoted by now.

Perhaps in terms of property damage, but not in terms of civilian casualties. The American Civil War was a remarkably gentlemanly affair.

You consider the extermination of 600,000 of the country’s best and brightest “gentlemanly”?

Bulk of that total was due to disease.

As for gentlemanly, yes. Just compare the US Civil War with, say, the War in the Vendée …….

In ‘The Ethnic Phenomenon’ Pierre van den Berghe makes an argument that white slaveowner’s relationships with female slaves was a major part in the ultimate collapse of the USA’s racial laws, as it ultimately became too difficult for them to view people who were increasingly more white then black and more and more tangled up in their recent family trees as alien others.

This may explain why Jews have historically opposed intermarriage.

Feminists get to define what “consent” means. Since there was a “power disparity”, she couldn’t “consent” even though she indeed undoubtedly did.

The power disparity was in her favor. She was young, beautiful, and fertile.

That cow’s already left the barn thanks to Kennedy’s animus for the citizens of his own Godforsaken country.

If (and that’s a massive if) the ruling class ever comes back to their senses we may be able to recover it, but that will require offense, not defense.

The House of David, for instance. The New Testament opens with proof that Jesus is a member. See also: The House of Windsor, House of Usher, et. al.

Note the status involved. It’s a long way to the top, usually longer than one generation (i.e. a mere individual) can manage, so families run relays.

You can team up with your boys or you can honor you father and mother. The best do both.

Many conservatives really did think that would continue with the numbers ramped up and cultural marxists and greedhead libertarians running the country. From justified pride to irrational hubris.

Do you think that conservatives pulled the levers of power? There were some conservatives whores (National Review types) that were deluded into thinking they had a seat at the table. But libs have ruled this country since 1932.

The reforms of 1913 basically gutted most of Jefferson’s enlightenment legacy, what’s left is Jefferson as White ethnic revolutionary leader, which puts the him in the same category as whoever was leading the Kosovo Liberation army, or any other ethnic nationalist movement. Stripped of his enlightenment credentials I don’t see any reason to have statues of him laying about. As an aside, in life Jefferson was extremely anti-royalist and would not have wanted any statues erected to him, and especially the pagan temples which imply Caesarism. I personally think all federal monuments to Jefferson should be privatized or dismantled.

I agree, but I’m a Westerner. I can see a Chinese person might have other ideas,

The Chinese (Chinese Chinese; they are quite a lot of them at my uni) that are know are all quite willing to concede the fact that Western symphonic music is top-dog. On the other hand, they are also quite willing to defend the greatness of Chinese culture in other areas: poetry (Du Fu), painting (Zhao Mengfu), philosophy (Confucius, Mencius, etc).

What’s puzzling is that the side with both the guns and the majority is getting rolled in this contest. On paper this should not be happening .

The side with the guns is the government. They have the serious guns. The guns not owned by the government are an irrelevance.

As for having the majority, who knows? I suspect most people really don’t care very much. I suspect that the number of people who are genuinely outraged, to the point of being prepared to do something about it, is quite small.

It’s a fight between a fairly small minority that is well-organised and well-disciplined and very well-funded and has the overwhelming support of those who control both traditional media and social media, and on the other side a fairly small minority that is poorly organised and poorly disciplined with pretty much zero funding and has zero support from those who control both traditional media and social media. The majority of people are disinterested spectators.

“But you know, Shakespeare wasn’t imposed upon people by force of arms.”

Well, it sort of was actually. If Brits hadn’t conquered half the globe, would this guy have been touring India in the 40s and 50s?

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geoffrey_Kendal

There’s no doubt that the long Brit/US global military/economic hegemony led to cultural hegemony. It helped that we had a decent product – the Mongols, hegemons over much of the known world, didn’t seem to leave much culture behind them apart from Skull Towers. Did they leave more in China?

What cultural hegemon will arrive in a post-US globe remains to be seen, but there’s only one current candidate. I don’t know about the US, but in the UK private schools are all offering Mandarin as the elites put their money on China. (Mind, sixty years back they’d have been offering Russian. Hedging their bets.)
