From the CBS station in Dallas:

Gorilla Statue Removed After Complaints It Was ‘Racially Insensitive’

February 28, 2018 at 4:22 pm

Apparently, America is running out of statues of white men like William McKinley to tear down, so attention is turning to toppling racist primate statues.

UPDATE: Dobby the Fiberglass Gorilla gets last-minute reprieve:

Gorilla Statue Will Return To Park Without Cage Despite Complaints

The media is alive with the story of Gary Oldman playing Churchill. Apparently he had to wear a particularly big "fat suit" on the set.

I once went on stage in a fat suit - and I weigh three hundred pounds. For some roles - paraphrasing Wallis Simpson, you can never be too fat.

But all this will soon be over. We are only a few years away from the actors we see on the big screen looking exactly like the historical personage they are playing. There have been a lot of guys who played Churchill from the obvious choice of Robert Hardy to the unlikely assail by Rod Taylor. None of them looked much like the Churchill everyone remembers. They look no more like Churchill than William Devane looked like JFK.

But live actors won't have to sit in the makeup chair much longer. Remember the tallest and the shortest actor on film was the same guy - Andy Serkis (Kong and Gollum). Serkis is the "new style" movie star - one whom we have never actually seen in the flesh.

The next one will be a motion capture Churchill and he will be the spitting image of the real one. Get ready.

Next, they came for my service monkey and I said “sure, you can have him” because he has been banned from all the major airlines anyway.

Next, they came for the homos sapiens, and I kept silent, as I thought they were just coming for the gays.

Yeah, you'd think. The thing to say, if you ever come face to face with someone who claims a gorilla statute is racist, is "It reminds me of my uncle Morty. I don't know why you think it particularly looks like a black man." And let them explain why it does.

  13. It’s very straightforward – if that statue reminds you of a black person you’re a racist – there’s no resemblance.

Also the statue has to come down because it clearly reminds you of a black person and that’s racist.

This is the modern version of the apocryphal story about Victorians covering up table legs out of prudishness – moderns cover up gorilla statues out of racism-prudishness.

Wrinkle in Time is number two? That's surprising. BP looked like a genuinely well made if unambitious movie that competantly hit familiar buttons. Wrinkle looked like a train wreck. BP has no real competition and Wrinkle has to compete with BP. And unlike BP, which benefitted from nearly uniform reviews (and promised censorship of bad reviews), the critics were unsparing in the opinions of Wrinkle. Of course there is that pesky observation, from the Russian hacker sites, that BP benefitted from an unprecedented use of NGOs and charities block-buying tickets. Apparently this was done on a much smaller scale with a smaller movie recently and Disney paid attention.

If your goal is to irritate, then you have also failed. Most readers here ignore you; a small percentage are entertained by your nonsense. "Stop your nonsense!" as Daniel Plainview wisely recommended.

Similarly, trees in national parks are racist because they hanged black people from trees.

The next one will be a motion capture Churchill and he will be the spitting image of the real one. Get ready.

Gary Oldman played the ruthless Eastern European dictator in The Hitman’s Bodyguard, which I saw last night. Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson have a good time swearing at each other and there are some cool stunts. It’s worth $1.50 at Redbox.

From Wikipedia: The 2009 edition of The Guinness World Records, which uses a different calculation to determine film grosses, stated that Jackson is the world’s highest grossing actor, having earned $7.42 billion in 68 films.

If Samuel L. Jackson is as successful as you indicate - I'm astounded. Almost all the actors in Hollywood films are at least competent, many are extraordinary but Jackson stands out as a truly lousy actor.

He is a joke. His schtick is just to talk too loud.

$7.42 billion ? Maybe the films he's been in have earned that much in toto, but Jackson hasn't. According to Celebrity Net Worth, as of May 2017 he's worth $200 million.

I saw The Hitman's Bodyguard on a plane, but I couldn't get through it. Jackson is supposed to be really grounded guy who knows what's important (love, actually) in contrast to Reynolds' uptight white man, but I just couldn't get over the fact Jackson's also supposed to have murdered hundreds of people. I mean, his first victim was a racist who had killed a black pastor, so murdering him presumably made Jackson a better person, but would none of those subsequent multi-hundred murders for hire have had any moral effect?

Also, Jackson's supposed to be the most wanted man on earth, with a scary band of (white) killers chasing him, but he and Reynolds shoot the shit endlessly about life, love etc. in open space, broad daylight with lots of people around.

As with a lot of movies currently, it seems to have no reason to exist, but for the fact that it's a racial parable.

A local non story to prove that white people are being victimized? Get that mess out of here

Leonard Pitts has written about the white conservative propensity to whine about local inconsequential instances in order to play the victim

By the way, the top 2 box office movie are Black Panther (damn that movie is kicking ass weekly) and wrinkle of time, both directed by Black People

Looks like People of Color are the future and America doesn't want white boys running things!

Here are the creators of Black Panther:

I'd say removing the gorilla statue for that reason was racially insensitive.

Ok – but if you’d really say it, you’d qualify as racist, wouldn’t ya?

Samuel L. Jackson cannot convincingly play an intelligent person, any more than Keanu Reeves can.

  60. And then they came back for Amy Wax…

    https://www.phillymag.com/news/2018/03/13/amy-wax-penn-law-teaching/

“I don’t think I’ve ever seen a black student graduate in the top quarter of the [Penn Law school] class and rarely, rarely in the top half,” Wax says in the video, titled “The Downside to Social Uplift” and hosted by Brown University professor Glenn Loury. “I can think of one or two students who’ve graduated in the top half of my required first-year course.”

Asked by Loury, who is Black, to explain further, Wax responds “I haven’t done a survey, I haven’t done a systematic study” and argues that because she teaches “89 to 95 students” a year, she is “going on that because a lot of this data is a closely guarded secret, as you can imagine.”

There appear to be conflicting demands to both punish Professor Wax for exposing confidential student grades in making these statements and also to denounce her claims as factually inaccurate. Not sure how it can be simultaneously a breach of privacy and a fabrication, but there you go.
