About a decade ago began the World Star Hip-Hop Era of cameraphone video of birthday party brawls at Chuck E. Cheese. In response, the Establishment launched the popular meme that Real Soon Now there’d be a lot of video showing that Trayvon and Michael Brown were gunned down by racist whites like George Zimmerman while minding their own business. President Obama announced that the solution to white racist oppression of blacks was lots more video, such as cop body cameras.

Now it’s 2019 and we now have lots of video, like this new fistfight at Disneyland’s Toon Town. The weight of this colossal amount of video looks like World Star Hip-Hop was more or less right and all the furrowed brow concern of Barack Obama and Eric Holder about how video would capture white racism was misleading.

So now, Conventional Wisdom (as embodied in Amy Harmon of the NYT) is shifting toward the idea that we have too much video evidence:

As Cameras Track Detroit’s Residents, a Debate Ensues Over Racial Bias
Studies have shown that facial recognition software can return more false matches for African-Americans than for white people, a sign of what experts call “algorithmic bias.”

By Amy Harmon, July 8, 2019

DETROIT — Twenty-four hours a day, video from thousands of cameras stationed around Detroit, at gas stations, restaurants, mini-marts, apartment buildings, churches and schools, streams into the Police Department’s downtown headquarters.

The surveillance program, which began in 2016, is the opposite of covert. A flashing green light marks each participating location, and the point of the popular initiative, known as Project Green Light, has been for the cameras to be noticed and help deter crime. Detroit’s mayor, Mike Duggan,

Detroit now has a white mayor.

received applause when he promised at his State of the City address earlier this year that expanding the network to include several hundred traffic light cameras would allow the police to “track any shooter or carjacker across the city.”

But in recent weeks, a public outcry has erupted over a less-touted tool employed in conjunction with the cameras: software that can, in a matter of seconds, suggest the identities of the anonymous people captured on video.

The facial recognition program matches the faces picked up across the city against 50 million driver’s license photographs and mug shots contained in a Michigan police database. The practice has attracted public attention recently as the department seeks approval for a formal policy governing its use from a civilian oversight board.

“Please, facial recognition software — that’s too far,” pleaded one resident at a recent meeting of the board.

The debate in Detroit is one of several unfolding around the country as rapid advances in facial recognition offer potentially disquieting new powers to a surveillance infrastructure that Americans have largely accepted as a fact of urban life. Immigration officials have mined driver’s license databases in at least three states, according to newly released records. …

In Detroit, whose share of black residents is larger than in any other sizable American city, it is a racial disparity in the performance of facial recognition technology that is a primary source of consternation.

“Facial recognition software proves to be less accurate at identifying people with darker pigmentation,” George Byers II, a black software engineer, told the police board last month. “We live in a major black city. That’s a problem.”

Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology reported in January that facial recognition software marketed by Amazon misidentified darker-skinned women as men 31 percent of the time.

Others have shown that algorithms used in facial recognition return false matches at a higher rate for African-Americans than white people unless explicitly recalibrated for a black population — in which case their failure rate at finding positive matches for white people climbs. That study, posted in May by computer scientists at the Florida Institute of Technology and the University of Notre Dame, suggests that a single algorithm cannot be applied to both groups with equal accuracy.

But, but … Race Does Not Exist!

I have to say that given the city’s demographics, it’s not unreasonable to be worried about facial recognition software having flaws in IDing black suspects or witnesses – it wastes police time and resources and given the no snitching culture having the cops show up at the wrong person’s house and insist the person there knows something about a recent crime could be dangerous.

On the flipside, it still presents a problem if it actually did work really well for the same reason – many urban crimes have a lot of witnesses, and minding your own business is the safest route if you live in an area with a lot of crime. If cops can accurately tell who was around and know where to find you, it’s a lot harder to avoid even inadvertently helping the cops and drawing the ire of the local thugs.

As an aside, it’s pretty remarkable that Duggan not only was elected, but won re-election in a landslide. It would be interesting to know more about how this guy has been so popular.

Yes, facial recognition is bad for criminals and likely criminals (one third of AA men have FELONY convictions, care to see how high that figure can go?). And yada yada yada it’s “biased” because that’s a buzzword: they’d call it biased if it were better and there’d be even more outrage, they call it biased because it’s less accurate, and I’m sure they’d call it “not respecting their diversity” and call for their own algorithm if it were equally good at recognizing all races.

It would have worked pretty well, too, without that damn welfare state that increased irresponsibility and high rates of breeding by/of the irresponsible vs. the responsible ones. We could have just walled off Detroit city, a few dozen other cities, and lots of specific neighborhoods, and let them slowly fade out.

  37. Steve Sailer on WHITE FLIGHT from 2014:

Now from 1990 to 2010, Ferguson dropped from 75% white to 29% white. This is the kind of thing we see a lot of in inner ring suburbs during the Section 8 Era, in the on-going game of Hot Potato. On the other hand, it’s a much slower rate of white flight than in the past than in, say Austin on the west side of Chicago from 1967 to 1980.

In general, that slower rate of transition seems like a good thing. It means change is less precipitous, crime is less of an immediate impetus, people have more time to plan for their moves, those who really likely where they live find things tolerable enough to stay, and so forth. And by all accounts, Ferguson was a semi-okay place … until the mobs looted it this week, egged on by the press denouncing white racism.

Instead, Ferguson’s lack of precipitous White Flight is currently being universally denounced as a Bad Thing because enough white people have stuck around in Ferguson to maintain some political and institutional continuity rather than immediately depart and surrender all offices to the most recent Section 8 arrivals.

In fact, for liberal conventional wisdom, whites in Ferguson are to be blamed both for leaving and for staying. It’s racist that some whites have left and it’s racist that enough whites have stayed to maintain some political power in Ferguson.

Basically, you white people who can’t afford to live in liberal whitopias like Marin County and Portland, you are damned if you do and damned if you don’t.

If you gathered a million face shots of Americans only 150,000 or so would be of black people. Not enough.

To make it work, you’d need to gather a data set of a million black faces. I’ll bet if the NYT caught wind of security consultants gathering a huge database of a million black people just because they are black they’d scream bloody murder.

There are a lot of reasons why Duggan was elected and then re-elected in a landslide, with the proximate cause being the failure of the previous leadership. The infamous and notorious Coleman Young was Detroit’s first black mayor and served from 1974 until 1994. He did much to exacerbate racial tensions and white flight ensued. Dennis Archer, a very smart and successful attorney (and former Michigan Supreme Court Justice) took over from 1994 until 2002 and was moderately effective, but the problems were too big for him to correct. Kwame Kilpatrick was then elected in 2002 and the city went down, fast. He is in federal prison for another 15 years for taking bribes, in addition to doing time for perjury in a state prison. The City ultimately filed for bankruptcy protection in 2013, shortly after Duggan took over. Same story: too much pension debt, no tax base, etc.

Duggan is the former deputy of a county-level politician, Ed McNamara, who was an old time political machine guy. There were lots of stories about McNamara, but he was never caught doing anything wrong. Duggan was his deputy and was good at actually operating municipal departments. He became the CEO of the Detroit Medical Center and turned around a dysfunctional medical center into a pretty well run organization. He was elected Mayor by having some competence and by agreeing to work with former Michigan Governor, Rick Snyder, to take the city through the bankruptcy everyone saw coming for 30 years. Again, he is operationally very successful. Don’t know if he took money way back when he worked for McNamara, but he made a lot of money at the DMC and has no need for that now.

There are a couple of interesting side notes. First, when he originally ran, he moved from the suburbs to the City of Detroit, as required by the charter, in order to run for Mayor. I can’t remember all of the details, but his paperwork to run for Mayor was filed before he was actually a resident of Detroit, so his name was stricken from the ballot. Only in Detroit can you file your paperwork TOO EARLY and be removed from the ballot. He actually continued to run as a write in candidate, and won the election. Then, some joker decided he was going to be another write-in candidate, and his name was Mike Dugeon, with the obvious intent of trying to confuse voters. The real Duggan still won. And he has had the good fortune of having a tremendous black chief of police, James Craig. He is a no BS guy.

Epilogue: when Duggan won his landslide re-election, he beat….Coleman A. Young, II, the love child of the original. So all of this talk about Detroit being back, given who might eventually wind up as mayor, should be taken with a grain of salt.

In her long, long NYT article, Amy Harmon doesn’t devote many words to the questions of What’s the system for? and How well does it work? Those pale in significance next to the pressing concerns of Upper West Side and Hamptons readers.

I guess if you’re a white victim of violent crime, it’s only a crime if the assailant was white. If he (xe?) was black, ask yourself what you did to provoke him/xim. (Assuming you weren’t murdered, in which case your loved ones can do the reflecting in your place.)

Ms. Harmon and her editors are being admirably egalitarian, for once. They want to apply the same rules to the black victims of crime in America’s most crime-ridden city. Equalizing false-positive rates according to the non-existent race of the subject is a far more urgent problem than solving a crime. Which would only worsen the school-to-prison pipeline, anyway.

Violent Brawl Breaks Out at Disneyland’s Toontown in Front of Children

Oh, so the brawl was violent, then. Drat. What with the children watching, one would have hoped for one of those peaceful brawls, but no such luck….

The news lady also tries to sensationalize things by saying the man “sucker-punched” the woman, after she spit on him. I don’t know anyone familiar with fighting and the English language who would call that a sucker punch. If Fred and Wilma are already having a heated exchange, then Wilma has the temerity to spit in Fred’s face, Fred’s punching Wilma is hardly a sucker-punch; indeed, nothing could be more predictable or expected than that a man whose face you have just spit in might strike you. A sucker-punch is unexpected, perhaps even unprovoked. If Wilma is minding her own business when Fred taps her on the shoulder then cold cocks her as she turns to him, that’s a sucker-punch.

I write these sorts of comments not to be the grammar and vocabulary police, but because the subtle mischaracterisions are, in my opinion, often quite intentional manifestations of GloboHomo’s agenda (here, to vilify a male – who, perhaps unnecessarily, but entirely understandably, escalated violence – and to exculpate a female who actually instigated the violence).

When truly unintentional, it’s worth documenting this stuff as the plummeting intelligence of the American population – largely driven , no doubt, by the imported ringers….

That is not true, Black people heartily endorse ultra violence and the notion of a society run along the lines of the Road Warrior films.

Whenever you see a Black woman crying about her pre-teen daughter, grandmother, or infant shot, be advised that while the tears were and are real, in no way would the woman countenance actually doing something to prevent that — locking up for very long times about 40% of Black men until they are too old to commit acts of stupid violence.

Black people are NOT just darkly skinned White people. Their ways are completely different. They have a massively larger amount of the MAO-A Warrior Gene, and desire highly to express it. Recall they evolved in a very low density population with a very high disease load, so they are optimized for male sexiness. Which means ultra violence, low IQs, high propensity to keep it real by coming back to Nipsey Hussle after one has been accused of being a snitch and popping a cap. Into said ass.

Black violence is part of Black fertility, Satoshi Kanazawa’s studies showing Black women are the least desired by men of all races and Black men the most desired by women of all races has never been disproven and been replicated over and over again. Asian men are at the bottom, followed by White men, with Black men on top. Any female advertising will show a Black male and White female couple for this reason. Meanwhile Black women are the least desired and ASian women the most followed by White women.

For any sizeable amount of Black people to desire law and order they would have to go against their genetic, hard-wired heritage. It is possible to find genetic outliers here and there, but impossible to have Black people act like Whites. The Cosby Show was just a lie, in real life Bill was drugging and raping women. Which goes to show you the stupidity — with his fame he could have had almost any he wanted, without any legal consequences. Black juries will almost never vote to convict Black criminals even when free of reprisals by gang members and with all involved: victims, prosecutor, judge, witnesses being Black.

Consider this: during Auschwitz’s three years, it was expanded at least twice, it took a highly disciplined genocide force of SS troops to kill somewhere between 800K and 1.2 million people who looked pretty much like them. And there was a roughly 15% suicide rate — not much glory and honor in gassing little kids and women who look vaguely like your relatives.

During April, May, and June of 1994, ordinary Rwandans took to the village lanes, and byways, and killed their neighbors who often looked like them, Tutsis and “moderate” Hutus alike, to the tune of … 800K to 1.2 million. With not industrial killing machines but mostly rocks and machetes. None of the perpetrators has committed suicide or even expressed remorse.

Black people should not be hated. They are who they are based on evolution. But lets at lest be honest about who and what they are as a population, not have any starry eyed illusions, or any thinking that in sustained peace time Black people through higher levels of extraversion, lower IQ, higher levels of impulsive stupid violence, they won’t dominate White men socially and all other aspects of life.

Now, bring about a sustained war time environment such as say, the Thirty Years War, with death and destruction all around in intense, shock modern warfare not tribal raiding, and the advantages of White men come in to play: we are very good at industrial scale suffering and endurance, mass killing the enemy, and coming up with new and exciting ways of killing great masses of human beings when it comes down to it. Nipsey Hussle may have been a posturing, aggressive rapper but when it comes to killing great masses of people the rulers need people like Oppenheimer, Teller, and Paul Tibbets.

    More BS from Whiskey.

The results of any study regarding the 2-repeat allele of the MAOA gene should be interpreted with caution in light of a number of limitations that need to be addressed in replication studies.

First, the measures of psychopathic personality traits, ever arrested, and ever incarcerated were based on self reports, not official data. Although self-reports have been shown to be reliable and valid instruments for assessing antisocial phenotypes (Krueger et al., 1994; Sutton, 2010), it is possible that official crime data would have produced differing results.

Second, the measures of criminal justice outcomes did not delineate between different types of offenders, such as violent predatory offenders versus non-violent property offenders. Perhaps the 2-repeat allele would have varying effects on different subcategories of offenders.

Third, while some studies examined different outcome measures and focused only on African-American males, it is important that future studies estimate the association between the 2-repeat allele and antisocial phenotypes in other samples.

Last, although the frequency of the 2-repeat allele is similar to prior research, only about 5% of the final analytical sample carried the 2-repeat allele.

Future research needs to examine much larger samples in order to include more 2-repeat allele carriers. Until these limitations are addressed, it would be premature to hypothesize how the 2-repeat allele may impact criminal activity patterns in society and attribute primarily to a single race.

He thinks responding to everything with a question is the Socratic method (he really likes to try to assign homework). Second, he uses an anecdote about misbehaving whites (non-violently, natch) to…not really make a point so much as just be contrary. His posts can be generally put in three categories: 1) “Nuh uhh” 2) “what about…” and 3) “provide five more citations to prove your point”.

First read, then comprehend, THEN respond. You keep doing it in the wrong order, usually skipping over the second step entirely.

The problem with posts that primarily just contradict someone is that in order to NOT be wrong almost all the time (as you are), that would require others TO be wrong almost all the time (which they’re not).

I was amazed to read in your earlier article on Asian – Black Test Score Gaps by School Districts that super-liberal, “Twenty-Eight Square Miles Surrounded By Reality” Ann Arbor, Michigan has practically the worst Asian-Black test score gap in the country.

Because of the University of Michigan and the automakers in SE Michigan, there are a lot of Asian professionals, particularly physicians and high-level engineers, who make enough money to live in town (16% of the population). Many of their kids are really bright and very competitive in education. By comparison, I’m wondering if most of the few blacks (only about 6% of the population) who live in town are in some sort of subsidized public housing.

Looking at the data, about 85% of adult Asians in Ann Arbor have at least a bachelor’s degree; by contrast, only about 30% of blacks do.

So run two versions one for lighter complexion and one for darker.

Spot on TWS. I’ve been retired for a number of years, but this doesn’t strike me as a computer science problem for the ages. Yes, you must get your algorithms tuned on a big database of black faces as well. But a program that takes a condition and goes off and does one thing versus another condition sending it off to do another thing … i think we’ve had that capability for a while. (In fact, if necessary you can do both and see whether they agree or one is works better in a particular case.)

  151. @Travis

Yeah, good question. Maybe the issue is with the light-sensitivity the camera is set to. You need a higher setting to capture the features on a dark face. If the suspects looked straight at the camera, and the camera could take fifteen 3-megapixel images per second there’d be no problem; the images would contain enough information almost no matter the camera’s aperture setting. But for at least a few more years security camera films won’t be nearly that good.

The Left will go on to explain that this isn’t because of genetics, of course. Instead, the Left will blame whites whites for having “historically forced” blacks into being whites’ entertainers through Evil White Supremacy and Racism, so blacks have been subconsciously trained to act up for cameras and whites have trained themselves not to — because being entertainment is beneath white people. about blacks: They don’t hesitate about beating the shit out of women who hit them. The taboo against pummeling women is long past its expiration date, and women have to earn it back.

Its one of a few reasons black males have cottoned to Islam in the last 50 years. Most Islam has extensive rules about when its ok to hit your woman and in what way. There are even videos online where Muslim clerics demonstrate and describe the proper ways.

That kind of dominant physical mindset is more appealing to a black than the “equality of the sexes” garbage in modern, SJW_Christianity—especially in light of how awful black women behave compared to non-black women to their man. Figure skating is mostly little girls travelling around the country with their families, mom making the costumes, everyone devoted to the skating daughter. In Brennan’s account, all the little girls knew which male skaters and which coaches and judges and so on were gay because everyone in the sport is so close. Brennan relates how the figure skating world finally decided to “come out” and acknowledge all the sick and dying athletes in their sport and start some charity activity.

This is the first paragraph on Wikipedia’s sucker punch article. Feel free to edit it where you see it is wrong.

A sucker punch (American English) (also known as a dog shot, coward punch, king hit or one-punch attack (Australian English) or cold-cock (American English)) is a punch made without warning or while the recipient is distracted, allowing no time for preparation or defense on the part of the recipient. It is often thrown from behind—such as in the ‘knockout game’—although striking from behind is not a prerequisite for a sucker punch. The term is generally used in situations where the way in which the punch has been delivered is considered unfair or unethical, and is done using deception or distraction, hence the term ‘sucker’ used to refer to the victim.

    “Coward punch”!

A man’s punching a woman, a child, or any of all but a few animals constitutes a sucker punch by definition. One would think.

The fact of the matter is that the United States has freedom of association, just not the version that Southrons had envisioned, where even southern whites who desired to conduct business with blacks, or even marry or have offspring with them, were virtue signaled to death, at best, or physically punished, at worst, because of their decision to intermingle. Remember, Southrons couldn’t even adhere to a very simple Supreme Court phrase–separate but equal.

the Justices stated in the Plessy case…

Why do you quote case law that should have been decided differently?

Except the damn Southrons couldn’t get it right–they had unequal public accommodations.

They’re looking to have been far right-er than us. Accommodation could well drag us into a kind of civilizational oblivion.

Assuming that your life is at grave risk on a daily basis merely by interacting with people around you.

Quality of life depends on arranging risk far less than grave.

That you can’t account for that in your reply is one reason you come off as a weirdo.

I’m impressed to see Wikipedia mentioning the knockout game (without immediately saying it’s an urban legend).

The knockout game is called Polar Bear Hunting when whites are the hunted. Ask Matty Yglesias.

“Quality of life depends on arranging risk far less than grave.”

Well, the quality of life was rather shoddy for southern blacks due to Jim Crow. All Southrons had to do was to follow some simple advice–separate but equal. Then, perhaps their race paradise would not have had dried up.

That you can’t account for that in your reply is one reason you come off as an idiot.

Unsubstantiated risks notwithstanding like flash mobs and racist FBI statistics, its no more dangerous to be around blacks than a combat zone. The latest Worldstarhiphop video from the Dizzy Corps are just an example of Recreational Racism, i.e. The Chuck-E-Cheese Effect, where blacks are discriminated against by social standards of human behavior, or keeping it real creep.
Fatty foods and global warming merely exacerbate these discriminatory social dysfunctions which are not racial but ethnodiversificated. Ethnodiversification is the key.

It really depends where you are at. Are you at a downtown eatery, a suburban shop, or at your neighborhood crack house? See, chances are really good on a daily basis when you encounter someone on the street, or in a restaurant, or in a store, that you won’t get mugged or shanked or raped.

Asinine. This is exactly why I grind this axe so much on here: the abject, obstinate refusal to acknowledge and accordingly react to women’s destructive and disgusting behavior. No matter what they do, there’s always a line of simps around the block waiting to suck up to them.

Facial recognition tool tackles illegal chimp trade

    By Beth Timmins
    22 January 2019

The idea came to conservationist Alexandra Russo when she was investigating online ape trafficking and sifting through posts on Instagram and Facebook for evidence of chimpanzees being offered for sale.

“We were spending more and more time looking through the depths of the internet; it’s like a rabbit hole. You don’t know where to look, you click around pretty aimlessly until you start to find things that look suspicious. So, I thought there must be a more efficient way to do this,” she explains.

“I began discussing the possibility of using some kind of software that could automatically find ape faces in online searches.”

Alexandra contacted the non-profit Conservation X Labs and met computer vision expert Dr Colin McCormick. “ChimpFace” is the result.

It first detects that the image shows a chimpanzee and then determines the individual.

“We train the algorithm to recognise individual chimps using up to 30 photos of an individual, adapting it to the chimp’s facial structures,” explains Dr Colin McCormick.

Processing time is quick, under a second, but takes longer as more images are added to improve accuracy.

“It is important to get images of each individual in different positions, facial expressions, in altered lighting, and with the head tilted at a different angle,” explains Alexandra.

The algorithm technology is being trained using a database of 3,000 ape face images.

In each of these pictures, a box is drawn around the chimp’s face and then matched with existing images in the ever expanding photo database.

“So you have some understanding of statistics, but you misuse it.”

If you want to live in fear and believe that every time you walk down the street in broad daylight that some vibrant will mug you, you are entitled to your emotion.

“As usual with extended Corv comments: no grasp of the issue raised; issue a non sequitur.”

Without offering any context or the examples in question, you are grasping at straws. More idiocy on your part.

Sir Walter Raleigh was a simp? The Irish at Rathlin and Smerwick would disagree.

This postmodern attitude of “all women be ho’s” belongs in the ghetto, not in the civilized districts of the realm.

Note I didn’t suggest letting her get away with it, only that the cure for the disease will differ by sex. It’s incredible that iSteve readers defend a black man punching a woman, in the stomach no less. Normally that would be cited as evidence for their barbarity.

Barbarity, unfortunately, is the only thing the “fairer sex” understands or respects.
