A commenter suggests a fascinating graph from Family-Studies.org:

Source: World Family Map Project, 2014. Figure shows children’s living arrangements in 2000–2012.
*For these countries, the percent of children who live with no parents was not measured.

I’ve often wondered if the reactionary strictness of Islamic family morals that irritates us sophisticated Westerners so much has something to do with Islam originating just north of the edge of the black world, with its high levels of familial chaos so evident on this graph. For example, Amman, Jordan has had its own black slum for a long time. The Arab slave trade introduced lots of blacks into Middle East (although the black population didn’t grow quickly like it did in the American South because Arab slaveowners tended to castrate the men and generally work slaves to death).

If you are from Sweden, the ideas of women working outside the house, divorce, non-marital childbearing, etc. doesn’t seem too threatening to Swedish culture’s stability and efficiency. You look around and ask, “What could possibly go wrong?”

On the other hand, in the Islamic countries of North Africa and the Middle East, if you ask what could possibly go wrong if we loosen up our family mores, you look to the south and and say, “Oh, yeah, a lot …”

On another note, the knowledge embedded in this graph of what family structures are like in Sub-Saharan Africa, and how they resemble African-American dysfunction, is simply unknown to probably 95% of working American pundits. The idea that, say, the structure of the family of the President of the United State while growing up was par for the course for Kenyan fathers is just unknown. James Q. Wilson brought up sub-Saharans’ casual attitudes toward childrearing in a 2003 book. But in standard American punditry, Africans didn’t have any culture whatsoever before 1619, so therefore all bad behavior by Africans in America is the fault of white people. Pay reparations now.

  1. The first four of six countries are “Third World”. Three of them favor Islamic fundamentalism. Indeed, a “terrific graph”.

The inclusion of certain countries but not others seems arbitrary. I’d be curious about Russia, China, Mexico, and others.

  4. With a couple of exceptions, the “best” countries to live in seem to be around the middle of the pack — 80% living with both parents. These are presumably the countries with the kind of people who are tolerant enough of single mothers that you end up with a few here and there (usually among minorities), but who have enough common sense in their own lives that they don’t themselves usually live like that.

It would be interesting to see this graph correlated with birth rates. No doubt in general there’s a negative correlation, but you’ve observed, Steve, that Israel has the highest birth rate among developed countries, and there it is, right at the top.

Some amount of the single-parent and zero-parent families in Africa is probably due to the effect of AIDS.

These patterns predate AIDS in the anthropological literature.

  11. Or the data isn’t very good from Third World countries.

Who knows if Jordan is really where it claims to be?

Israel’s numbers are probably pretty reliable — they care about breeding intensely.

  14. African numbers might reflect polygamy, many women sharing a wage earning but absent father.

Israeli numbers almost certainly reflect the Orthodox Jewish population, whose lifestyle is highly regimented and subsidized.

Central and South America may have something like polygamy with men having multiple separate families. This may have been common among protestants in the US also. For example HL Hunt:

  16. South Africa is below Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Uganda, etc. because it has more AIDS than they do. AIDS is more prevalent is Southern Africa (Zimbabwe, Zambia, Namibia, Botswana, Mozambique as well as South Africa) than in West or East Africa. I don’t know why. Southern Africans are mostly Bantus, i.e. relatively recent immigrants from West Africa. They’d have some Bushman admixture of course. I wonder how widespread AIDS is among Bushmen.

I’m surprised by the high placing of Italy and the Netherlands.

  18. The likely single largest factor involved in for father presence (or absence) in any culture is the historic level of required paternal investment. Could mothers in the Arab world support themselves? Even if they could, is that wise to attempt in an extremely clannish society?

The high importance of patrilineage in the father’s-brother’s-daughter marrying Muslim societies may have also been significant here.

No, it doesn’t. There is no correlation between this graph and how appealing (or developed) a country is to live in. If Sweden tomorrow adopted more conservative social mores, it wouldn’t suddenly become a dysfunctional country. And if Jordan became more socially liberal, it wouldn’t become Sweden.

Sure, many did. But you have to provide data if you are claiming this was universal practice. My reading of history suggests that Arabs (and Turks) could be both more brutal and more liberal towards their slaves compared to Southern slave-owners. Many Arabs intermarried with (non-castrated) slaves. Many slaves went on to become trusted confidants of their owners, eventually becoming their heirs. Many became warriors, chieftains, even dynasts (especially true for Turkish slaves, though they were predominantly non-Africans). American slaveowners did not castrate their slaves (and probably beat to death fewer of them), but they established a rigid racial caste system that prevented anyone with darker skin from being allowed to perform any but the most menial jobs.

  26. Arabs actually do have a significant amount of negro genes, esp. In countries like Egypt and Yemen. So the threat of relaxed paternalism to their societies is no doubt higher than in northern Europe or east Asia; it’s not merely a matter of perception of blacks wildin out below the Sahara.

  27. “Israeli numbers almost certainly reflect the Orthodox Jewish population, whose lifestyle is highly regimented and subsidized.”

Israel is a first world country with a third world birthrate.

The statement above is misleading and incorrect, and certainly show a complete lack of awareness of what aren’t even nuances in Israel’s demographic and family situation.

From the least observant to the so-called “Ultra-Orthodox,” Jews have kids. Even the less observant average well above 2.0 per woman. In my community, I have friends with seven, eight, even more kids. Lots of friends and acquaintances.

However, the very high two-parent rate, also makes sense. The progressive element here is very noisy and does everything it can to import Western norms on every issue it can, including divorce. However, even though there are secular courts that are more and more anti-male in practice, divorce itself, being subject by the state to some level of adherence to Jewish law, means that no-fault divorce doesn’t exist in Israel like it does in the rest of the West. Since women initiate 2/3 or more of all divorces in no-fault jurisdictions, this has nice benefits in improved family stability and the like.

  29. I lived in Israel for seven years and from observation only, I would say the Israeli numbers are correct. Of course there are children who may have had a parent killed in war, and there are some divorced parents, as in any free society, but there are very, very, few single mothers, the way we have them in the United States. The cultural norm, despite the noisy left wing, is very pro-marriage, very pro-children, anti-abortion and solidly conventional. Steve somewhat crudely refers to this as caring about “breeding” but I think it is just what we used to call “traditional morality”. Naturally, many years ago, the New York Times had to run a piece criticizing Israel for its low divorce rate, stating how hard it was for single or divorced women to live there. There is always something about traditional morality and family with which the New York Times can find fault.

What exactly do you dispute? That no racial caste system was established, or that the white slaveowners allowed slaves (and other blacks) to rise to high positions in Southern society?

  35. Were there free blacks, some of which owned black slaves themselves, in the Antebellum South?

    Yes.

Were there slaves granted permission to go into various trade careers for profit for themselves as well as their masters which could hardly be termed as menial?

    Yes.

Will Kris disregard all this by claiming “well, none were allowed full privileges as wealthy whites, so there!”

    Most likely.

I think that there is a large difference between that of Black/Hispanic/prole White families in the United States, and Black families in Africa. I think that in Africa, a lot of children are growing up in single parent families because of murder and AIDS, where as in the US, the underclass children grow up in single parent families because of divorce and illegitimacy.

  37. Middle Easterners are on average +90% Middle Eastern in genetics thanks to excessive inbreeding from cousin marriage, arranged marriages (caste system) and polygamy. Male polygamy was probably what decreased the black genetic component since 1 full blooded Middle Eastern male impregnating both wives and concubines raised the Caucasoid component in their children’s bloodline.

Ashkenazi Jews (until 100 years ago) purposefully bred for smarts. The best scholars married the daughters of other scholars or rich merchants, who themselves were above average and the couples were supported by the community and encouraged to have children. The Nobel Prize winning writer Isaac Singer casually describes the process in the book “In My Father’s Court”. His mother was the daughter of a well-known rabbi and community leader. When it came time for her to marry, matches were proposed, as all marriages were arranged, and she told her parents explicitly, she wanted to marry the best scholar among the group – that is the boy with the highest IQ and greatest diligence. After 1000 years of this kind of thing, Ashkenazi Jews certainly improved their average IQ and work ethic. It will be interesting to see what happens to the Jews now.
