Why Aren't There Mexican Homeless?
Search Text Case Sensitive  Exact Words  Include Comments

Dear Mexican: I seen black homeless people and white people being homeless. How come I never seen a Mexican and a Chinese person being homeless?

Get a Pinche Job, Bum

Dear Pocho: I can’t answer for chinitos, because the most Celestial thing about me is my love for an orange chicken-chow mein-brown rice lunch combo. But you’re falling into the same trap that many Mexicans fall into on Facebook: namely, that Mexicans never go homeless because they’d rather sell oranges and flowers on street corners than hold up a sign begging for food like a lazy gabacho. The answer is more complex than a pinche meme. Percentage-wise, Latinos are over-represented on a national level: The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s 2015 Annual Homeless Assessment Report found about 20 percent of the homeless are Latino, just a tick above the 17 percent of Latinos that make up the American population. But the survey doesn’t break down the Latino homeless—whether the population is more immigrant or assimilated, Salvadoran or Mexican. A better indicator of whether Mexican immigrants are less averse to homelessness is in a 2015 study by the Institute for the Study of Homelessness and Poverty at the Weingart Center examining the homeless community in Los Angeles County. It found that Latinos (who make up 47 percent of LA County’s population) accounted for only 33 percent of homeless. More tellingly, “about 14 to 18 percent of homeless adults in Los Angeles County are not U.S. citizens compared with 29% of adults overall,” suggesting undocumented Mexicans would rather hustle than live outside. But there’s nothing to brag about here—don’t be a heartless pendejo, and help out the homeless, regardless of raza.

Why aren’t there more Mexicans in outdoor-type jobs? I’m referring to camp guides, naturalists, river rafting guides, etc My theory is that the outdoors haven always been a safe space for us, and most times that is where we were working, not relaxing.

Tomás but Not a Tío

Dear Tom but not an Uncle: A 2009 survey by the University of Wyoming and the National Park Service (NPS) found that Latinos (read: Mexicans) actually made up the largest percentage of minorities who visited national parks—a whole nine percent! And pochos like you are even rarer: only five percent of NPS workers were Latinos (read: Mexicans). This aversion to the gran outdoors is logical, actually. Gabachos have the luxury of enjoying backpacking for weeks at a time and rafting down the Withlacoochee (quick aside: since this Florida river sounds like huitlacoche, is this further proof for armchair Aztecs that the Nahuatl empire went all the way to the Sunshine State the way it extended to Michigan aka Michoacán?). Mexicans, meanwhile, view nature much the way Manifest Destiny did: something to tame, not to revel in. The Mexican has many fond memories of spending days with his Papa Je in the beautiful cerros of Zacatecas—but that’s to find logs to chop down for his campesino life. Once he came to el Norte, no way would my grandpa—or I, or most non-assimilated Mexicans who knows rural life—want to camp on purpose.

  1. Well. An odd sort of question. So here is my attempt at an answer.

Thanks to the Mexican government’s deliberate policy of creating a population explosion, Mexico is a miserably poor cesspit of filth and violence. Anyone in Mexico who doesn’t have a job, or an association with a criminal organization, dies. You may say that this is simply the market at work; I say that it is awful and if you think this is great then you should volunteer to live that way.

I mean, saying why aren’t’ there homeless Mexicans, is like saying why aren’t there birds with no wings, or fish that can’t catch food, or plants without water. Because they are all dead. Because they live in the jungle, and the law of the jungle is that if you don’t outcompete your neighbor, you die.

If life red of tooth and sharp of claw is so wonderful, how come pretty much everyone in Mexico – and places like Mexico – dreams only of escaping someplace else?

And is that really how a society should be structured?

Actually in the Phoenix AZ area, as you enter the freeway, you can see a white trash asking for money in every corner! WTF! Also, as one drives around the area, signs of 'we are hiring' are all over. So I don't know what to do of it. My neighbor told me that those people begging usually take home about 80 dls a day! So why work? while the so called 'mexicans' are selling fruits out of the back of their pick up trucks, earning what they take home. Take that for laziness!

Whenever I see these deadbeats on the freeway ramps, I always give them a little something.
    It's called "the finger".

Same here in Portland, Oregon; especially on the west side. I see numerous "Help Wanted" signs and young white men and women with cardboard signs and backpacks at freeway exits and busy intersections. Never seen a non-white beggar though.

  4. “…help out the homeless…”
You say “heartless pendejo” like it’s a bad thing.
I help the homeless every year when I pay my taxes.
Any “obligation” I might have to support the “community” is thereby fully discharged.

  7. Probably because they tend to immigrate in groups (families)?? And because the relatives who are more prone to become homeless stay in Mexico?? As well in China??

How about ten+ of them them pile up belly button to bung hole in a rented 700 sq. ft. two bedroom cracker box house or apartment designed for one married couple with one or two (max.) children?

Real property and tax listing personal property per se do not cause expenditures of local (property) taxpayer funded operating budgets. People do however, and those on the margins and "in the shadows" even more so.

or how about because Mexican parents will NEVER kick the kids out. It's all about familia.

I have a good friend who's son is a dead beat, the kid never works is in trouble with the law all the time and even has gang members "after him" and dad just keeps on helping no matter what the kid does.

this kid does NOT WANT to work.

That, and on a number of bad metrics i.e. crime most Hispanics are lumped in with "whites," diluting or dissimulating a lot of potentially valuable information about these former specifically.

WOW, that sounds made up. I have never ever seen a 'young' person ....of any race for that matter.....with a cardboard sign begging. Maybe asking for change at the gas station but never a sign at the end of an off ramp.....well there was that one young pregnant Hispanic girl hanging out in front of the bank with a kid in a stroller and a sign last Christmas, i gave her a $20, then the bank made her leave.

At the off ramp i see people of all races and usually claiming to be vets. Many times i see Hispanic men and women trying to sell flowers or fruit. My office is right down the street from a homeless shelter/soup kitchen and i see them walking up and down the street all day long.

the racial make up is about 1/3 of each, black, Hispanic, white, many over weight and the white people usually have a pet dog which i find really odd.....maybe for protection. Many times they like to just crash out on the lawn nearby the shelter and my office.

  16. Idk I see plenty of what I assume are mestizos with signs on the roadside, and they are a very small minority here, plenty of whites too though. You have to go downtown to see blacks doing this.
