WASHINGTON — Young immigrants brought to the U.S. as children and now here illegally can “rest easy,” President Donald Trump said Friday, telling the “dreamers” they will not be targets for deportation under his immigration policies.

Trump, in a wide-ranging interview with The Associated Press, said his administration is “not after the dreamers, we are after the criminals.”

The president, who took a hard line on immigration as a candidate, vowed anew to fulfill his promise to construct a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. But he stopped short of demanding that funding for the project be included in a spending bill Congress must pass by the end of next week in order to keep the government running.

“I want the border wall. My base definitely wants the border wall,” Trump said in the Oval Office interview. Asked whether he would sign legislation that does not include money for the project, he said, “I just don’t know yet.” Throughout the campaign, he had firmly and repeatedly guaranteed that Mexico, not U.S. taxpayers, would pay for the wall.

Eager to start making progress on other campaign promises, Trump said he would unveil a tax overhaul package next week — “Wednesday or shortly thereafter” — that would include a “massive” tax cut for both individuals and corporations. He would not provide details of rate proposals or how he planned to pay for the package but asserted the cuts for Americans will be “bigger, I believe, than any tax cut ever.”

Congressional Republicans seemed caught off guard by Trump’s announcement and did not appear to have been briefed on the details of the White House’s forthcoming plan.

Trump spoke with the AP ahead of his 100th day in office.

He panned that marker as “artificial.” Still, the White House is eager to tout progress on the litany of agenda items he promised to fulfill in his first 100 days, despite setbacks including court bans on his proposed immigration limits and a high-profile failure in repealing and replacing the current health care law.

The president said Friday he spent his first 100 days laying the “foundation” for progress later in his administration, including by building relationships with foreign leaders. He cited German Chancellor Angela Merkel as a leader he was surprised to have developed strong chemistry with, given that he has been critical of her handling of immigration policies.

As a candidate, Trump strongly criticized President Barack Obama for “illegal executive amnesties,” including actions to spare from deportation young people who were brought to the country as children and now are here illegally. But after the election, Trump started speaking more favorably about these immigrants, popularly dubbed “dreamers.”

On Friday, he said that when it comes to them, “This is a case of heart.”

Trump will probably build some kind of Mexican barrier, but legal immigration will stay high and refugee intake will not slacken appreciably. The racial replacement/dispossession will continue and probably accelerate.

In order to commit treason, to betray [X] you have to have once had loyalty to [X] that you've broken.

Trump was never loyal to the likes of you, he played the white, angry masses of America like fools. The establishment knew that they'd win either way, but with Trump they'd be able to do whatever they wanted since he has no philosophy of governing and they'd be able to openly plunder the state since he has no sense of propriety.

But many dreamers will likely become criminals given their penchant for gang activity and other crimes. Young Latinos males are fueling the gang problem throughout the nation.

Trump broke yet another promise as he repeatedly told his crowds that ending DACA “would be a priority on day one”. F*cking liar. I say that because he probably knew it all along and knowingly lied to us. I don’t buy the argument that he “evolved” after assuming office which is just another way of saying we got played.

I brought up this example to refute your earlier point, that only “manly” men could protect Western Civilization. Trump has many, many flaws, no doubt about it, but because of his lower testosterone levels and his other attributes ( for the connection of IQ, testosterone, etc. to genius see details here: http://www.unz.com/jthompson/isteve-metrics/#comment-1823832 ) he is Western Civilization’s best chance at survival, in my opinion

Trump’s “alt-right” fans have an odd fixation with testosterone levels, which is why it’s ironic that while Trump’s level is within the “healthy” range, it is below the average level of 679, and even below the norm for his age, which is 524.

I look at the whole behavior, not individual acts.

Young immigrants brought to the U.S. as children and now here illegally can “rest easy,” President Donald Trump

As a Europe-based European, I might be missing something here, but I think that's how it should be.
If illegal immigrants want* to stay, they should.
Otherwise law enforcement should go from door to door hunting down illegals in hiding, possibly tens or hundreds of thousands of them,
    - leading to brutal scenes, including bloodshed,
-> ruining the image of his presidency catastrophically and probably forever
-> disabling him on every other front
I mean the opposite of what he is doing would have been the stupid. Trying to directly eliminate the illegal immigration would be so self-defeating as to amount to treasonous.

    * If there is any way to kick them out, it should be indirect: eliminating incentives for them to stay.
It's excellent that DJT exploits his present situation of relative impotence to present himself as humane.

Explicit anti-illegal immigration stance would be also stupid and self-defeating as it would ignore Ron Unz's suggestion about the immigration issue:

I had a series of personal meetings with the editorial boards of most of California’s leading mainstream/liberal newspapers. One issue I repeatedly raised was that *legal* immigration was much too high and should be drastically reduced. Naturally, I expected massive push-back—but got absolutely none. But I’m absolutely sure if I had attacked *illegal* immigration, the response would have been icy hostility....
It took me a while to digest such a surprising reaction, and it led me to spend hours on the phone with some of the top national anti-immigration figures, discovering that they were just as surprised and intrigued by the idea as I had been. ....
It may sound bizarre, but I think there’s the strong potential for a natural political alliance between pro-immigrant Democrats and anti-immigration Republicans, with the pro-immigration Republicans like Paul Ryan and the Koch Brothers being the odd-men out.

Trump doesn’t like the idea of deporting people who are fully acculturated, who look at the US as their home. Unlike the rest of us, he gives the orders–he is the person who has to bear the guilt and shame of going against his conscience, and it seems that he is unwilling to deport law-abiding people who talk and act just like the rest of us. I think backtracking on this simply shows that he is a mensch. But he is still committed to the Wall, and he still wants to deport criminals–he is still the man my family voted for. Though I continue to hope for some action to discourage chain migration, and an end to birth-right citizenship for illegals.

Thank you for this great comment! I strongly agree. I have suspected for a while, that Mr. Unz's article might have found its way into the White House, somehow:

A "Grand Bargain" on Immigration Reform?
An alliance of pro-immigrant Democrats and anti-immigration Republicans could finally fix our broken system
    http://www.unz.com/runz/a-grand-bargain-on-immigration-reform-2/

    Dealing Humanely with Illegal Immigrants

A much higher minimum wage combined with strengthened immigration enforcement measures should be able to reduce future illegal immigration to minimal levels, while large, permanent cuts in legal immigration should eliminate the population pressure driving America toward becoming a low-wage society and reducing the quality-of-life for American workers.

But any agreement on these necessary longer-term policies would also have to deal humanely with millions of existing undocumented residents, who had arrived during an era when the government did not seriously enforce its immigration laws.

Any politically viable proposal would need to offer permanent residency and perhaps eventual citizenship [this is the only point I disagree with; a path to citizenship should not be part of a deal; maybe there could be some kind of special permanent residency status for these individuals, except, that they would never get the ''right to vote'' or hold political offices in the U.S.; the same rule/status should apply to ''anchor babies'' ] to individuals who have already lived in the United States for many years, had no criminal record, and possessed strong ties to the local community, such as American-born family members.

Meanwhile, a large hike in the minimum wage and stronger employment enforcement laws would eliminate the jobs of many of lower-skilled immigrant workers too recently arrived to qualify for a change in status. Such existing illegal residents should be offered free transportation back to their home countries, together with a generous one-time cash settlement, perhaps as high as $5,000 or even $10,000 per adult, encouraging them to come forward and accept permanent deportation, an investment that would be very cost-effective for the American taxpayer. (Naturally such payments would require a written commitment not to return, enforced by serious criminal penalties.) With their jobs having disappeared, it seems likely that most of the more recently arrived immigrants would find such a financial offer very attractive, completely obviating the need for any harsh federal “deportation force.”

    , @MarkinLA
What will you do with their parents? Are you going to let them stay and have a virtual amnesty for the whole family?

They can be deported at work and at school if we want to, and it won't hurt Trump at all/ The media will howl and Americans will approve.

  18. On the one hand, Trump tells us he is going to enforce the law and that if we don’t have laws, we don’t have a country. On the other hand and after he gets in office, he starts selectively enforcing the laws and spouting nonsense like “We’re not going after the dreamers we’re going after criminals.” That is about like saying “WE aren’t going after good guys who rob banks to give that money to their families and the poor, we are going after the criminals.”

Anyone who came here illegally has to leave. If an infant came here illegally 15 years ago, the law was broken and they have to be deported.

How about America for Americans, America First, all that Mr. Trump? He sure seems to be forgetting a lot of promises he made to get himself elected.

Yes, but what is the actual point of doing this? If it is just to stress the majesty and immutable nature of the law, remember that laws are changed all the time, usually because corporations and their lobbyists pay off politicians to do so, so there is nothing sacrosanct about the law.

We are all in this together and we all profit from it in some way, even if we don't personally hire illegal nannies and gardners who pay sales taxes and make phone calls that help make profits for the corporations that our pension funds invest in.

Total BS. As others, including John Derbyshire, have pointed out, the toothpaste is out of the tube, we ARE a multicultural society. The haters, both white and non-white, might wish for civil war, but nobody with an IQ above college-level will go that way. We have institutions that allow for dealing with diversity: equality under the law; markets that value goods for utility and labor for instrumentality; meritocratic bureaucracies. Just allow these institutions to function as they should, and all will be well. Your proposal for ethnic cleansing is mean-spirited, unnecessary, and unintelligent. Go back to AmRen.

On the one hand, Trump tells us he is going to enforce the law and that if we don't have laws, we don't have a country. On the other hand and after he gets in office, he starts selectively enforcing the laws and spouting nonsense like "We're not going after the dreamers we're going after criminals." That is about like saying "WE aren't going after good guys who rob banks to give that money to their families and the poor, we are going after the criminals."

Anyone who came here illegally has to leave. If an infant came here illegally 15 years ago, the law was broken and they have to be deported.

How about America for Americans, America First, all that Mr. Trump? He sure seems to be forgetting a lot of promises he made to get himself elected.

Anyone who came here illegally has to leave. If an infant came here illegally 15 years ago, the law was broken and they have to be deported.

Yes, but what is the actual point of doing this? If it is just to stress the majesty and immutable nature of the law, remember that laws are changed all the time, usually because corporations and their lobbyists pay off politicians to do so, so there is nothing sacrosanct about the law.

We are all in this together and we all profit from it in some way, even if we don’t personally hire illegal nannies and gardners who pay sales taxes and make phone calls that help make profits for the corporations that our pension funds invest in.

    @Ivan K.

The question I have for all the loyalists, is there any betrayal that would cause you to reject Trump or are you going to support him no matter what he does ?

It took me a while to digest such a surprising reaction, and it led me to spend hours on the phone with some of the top national anti-immigration figures, discovering that they were just as surprised and intrigued by the idea as I had been. ....
It may sound bizarre, but I think there’s the strong potential for a natural political alliance between pro-immigrant Democrats and anti-immigration Republicans, with the pro-immigration Republicans like Paul Ryan and the Koch Brothers being the odd-men out.
    http://www.unz.com/freed/ok-now-what/#comment-1646524

Unz: As I said, I spent hours on the phone discussing it with some of the top anti-immigration leaders, who seemed just as intrigued as I was. These are some of the people who have a great deal of contact and influence with the main anti-immigration figures in the Trump campaign.....
    http://www.unz.com/freed/ok-now-what/#comment-1647223

Thank you for this great comment! I strongly agree. I have suspected for a while, that Mr. Unz’s article might have found its way into the White House, somehow:

A “Grand Bargain” on Immigration Reform?

  29. There will always be a demand for illegal workers, because the cost of hiring US workers, giving them health insurance, paying social security tax for them, getting workers comp insurance, and so on will make lots of businesses unviable.

For example household cleaning services can only charge so much before homeowners will turn elsewhere–probably to freelance illegals. So it is better to hire illegals, pay them cash, and fire them at will than to hire obese US citizens who can’t work anyway and who get a worker’s comp injury on the day after the first pay day.

Really we should all be grateful to illegal workers for doing so much for so little.

And there can be a place for those employers - jail or the bankruptcy court.
    , @Alden
Anyone who hires illegals for more than 3 days had better have work men's comp insurance.

Illegals get work men's comp just like any legal worker. Nor can you get out of it by claiming you fired them 5 minutes before they got hurt. There are tens of thousands of attorneys who will make sure you and your regular home owners insurance company pays for injured workers no matter their legal status.

Many cities and counties are sick and tired of employers without work men's comp insurance dumping injured employees on the county health system. So the city and county attorneys are going after the employees to pay the cost

Speaking of obese have you actually seen the illegal Hispanic Indian women? 4ft 11 220 pds is the average size.

Exactly, and while we are about it. why not offer incentives to worthless US citizens and prison inmates to emigrate to Australia, Liberia, Tierra del Fuego, Syria, Iraq, North Korea, Siberia, or Greenland and sign a form to say they will never come back alive. We could also ask for volunteers to form a colony at the North Pole. (With global warming, it is not as chilly as what it once was.)

France offered such incentives in the past but, unfortunately the Spanish and Portuguese took the incentives, and the Arabs didn't. A similar program in the United States would need to offer the incentives only to the least productive citizens and residents; this would, of course, produce, um, racially disparatet results.

Just allow these institutions to function as they should, and all will be well. Your proposal for ethnic cleansing is mean-spirited, unnecessary, and unintelligent. Go back to AmRen.

Poles, Russians, Italians, Iberians, Balkanians and Greeks are not Americans.

"Our posterity" are the English, Scottish and Dutch descendants of the founding fathers.

And don't give me the old "they're white, they assimilated" bullshit. Assimilation does not happen. EVER.

Noticed you added Dutch. Were your ancestors Dutch instead of English?

  45. I never really agreed with Trump’s platform nor did I trust him, he is a crass decadent capitalist with a strong loyalty to Israel (which explains his Islamophobia) but I can’t help for feel bad for his supporters. They invested so much time and so much hope, they nearly started an idolatrous cult around this man, and he’s turned out to be nothing other than a more ill mannered version of George W. Bush.

    Trump is a quisling.

Quisling means traitor, that is “one who commits treason.”

In order to commit treason, to betray [X] you have to have once had loyalty to [X] that you’ve broken.

Trump was never loyal to the likes of you, he played the white, angry masses of America like fools. The establishment knew that they’d win either way, but with Trump they’d be able to do whatever they wanted since he has no philosophy of governing and they’d be able to openly plunder the state since he has no sense of propriety.

There will always be a demand for illegal workers, because the cost of hiring US workers, giving them health insurance, paying social security tax for them, getting workers comp insurance, and so on will make lots of businesses unviable.

For example household cleaning services can only charge so much before homeowners will turn elsewhere--probably to freelance illegals. So it is better to hire illegals, pay them cash, and fire them at will than to hire obese US citizens who can't work anyway and who get a worker's comp injury on the day after the first pay day.

Really we should all be grateful to illegal workers for doing so much for so little.

Anyone who hires illegals for more than 3 days had better have work men’s comp insurance.

Illegals get work men’s comp just like any legal worker. Nor can you get out of it by claiming you fired them 5 minutes before they got hurt. There are tens of thousands of attorneys who will make sure you and your regular home owners insurance company pays for injured workers no matter their legal status.

Many cities and counties are sick and tired of employers without work men’s comp insurance dumping injured employees on the county health system. So the city and county attorneys are going after the employees to pay the cost

Speaking of obese have you actually seen the illegal Hispanic Indian women? 4ft 11 220 pds is the average size.
