A gathering of rich oil Arabs pledged $30 billion this week at a meeting in Kuwait to start rebuilding war-shattered Iraq. Sounds nice but these kinds of conclaves are notorious for offering big but delivering little.

The event was billed as helping Iraq repair war damage caused by ISIS. In fact, most of the damage from that short-lived conflict was caused by US bombing and a few Russian air strikes. ISIS, as this column has long been crying in the wilderness, was largely a paper tiger confected by the US, Britain and France to justify their military re-entry into Syria.

Iraq’s government says it needs at least $88 billion to rebuild war damage. What the US-imposed client regime in Baghdad won’t or can’t say is that the damage to Iraq is far greater than $88 billion and was largely inflicted by US air power in 1990-1991 and 2003.

Iraq was ravaged, as I saw myself while covering the wars. This small nation of 23-25 million souls, a third of whom were in permanent revolt against the Baghdad government, was pounded into rubble by US air power and cruise missiles. First in 1990-1991, then in 2003, everything of value was blown to bits: hospitals, schools, food factories, chemical plants making insecticide, bridges, and communications. In short, all the attributes of a modern state.

Most shocking to me, was the destruction of Iraq’s water and sewage treatment plants by US air strikes.

Their destruction resulted in epidemics of cholera and other water-born diseases. Children were the primary victims. The UN asserted that over 550,000 Iraqi children died as a result of contaminated water. US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright later notoriously asserted that these deaths were ‘a price worth paying.’ I call them a war crime.

In 2003, 900,000 US-directed troops massed in Kuwait, invaded Iraq to finish off, it was claimed, the ‘work that the first president Bush failed to achieve,’ the overthrow and lynching of Iraqi president, Saddam Hussein. If Saddam had any nuclear or broad-area biological weapons, the invader’s buildup in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia would have been a dream target.

But Saddam Hussein had no nuclear weapons, contrary to US and British claims. I discovered in Baghdad a group of British scientific technicians who had been sent by the UK Ministry of Defense to build outlawed biological weapons at Salman Pak. These included deadly anthrax and Q-fever – but only for use against Iran if a second Iraq-Iran War erupted.

It is now widely accepted that Iraq had no weapons of mass destruction pointed at the West, as George Bush and Tony Blair incessantly claimed. But this was the excuse for going to war against Iraq and destroying it. When no such weapons were found, the story from Washington and London was changed to ‘oops, it was an intelligence failure. Sorry about that.’

ORDER IT NOW

Journalists like myself who asserted that Iraq had no weapons of mass destruction were fired or marginalized. I was blacklisted at CNN after the White House told the network to fire me at once. All the ‘presstitutes’, who acted as government boosters for the war, were promoted and lauded. Welcome to the new Soviet media.

Since Iraq, one if the Arab world’s most developed countries, was laid waste by US bombing, and since the war was deemed a big mistake, who is responsible for trying to repair Iraq to its pre-war condition? The money offered last week in Baghdad by the Gulf Arabs was a drop in the bucket and designed to bring Iraq into the forming anti-Iran alliance.

If this war crime was being properly litigated, Washington would likely end up being assessed something like $100 billion in damages just to replace physical infrastructure destroyed in the two wars, never mind the deaths of so many Iraqi civilians. Iran would also have a claim against Iraq’s western and Arab backers for Baghdad’s 1980-1988 war of aggression against Iran that caused an estimated one million Iranian casualties.

‘Oops, I’m sorry we destroyed your country and children’ is not a sufficient mea culpa. The western leaders who engineered this criminal war against Iraq deserve to be brought to book. So far, they have gotten off scot free. In fact, the same terrible fate has since befallen Syria, Yemen and parts of Somalia. Were these disasters also mistakes due to faulty intelligence?

Well, as full of BS as many Soviet media were, they sure as hell were much more professional in:

    1. Assessing the actual state of affairs internationally;
    2. They could hardly be suspected of ethnic and cultural phobias towards the West. It was somewhat ideological in nature but “trudyachiesya Zapada” (West’s people of labor, working class) was a good “signal”.

Today, Mr. Clapper talks openly about flawed genetic composition of Russians and everyone in US simply applauds. No problem. Just an example. What’s next?

OK, so how do we deal with the international bankers, international corporations and politicians who fund and benefit from terror?

Islam is not a religion it is a political ideology bent on the destruction of the west.

A statement like that sounds like propaganda.

soon, very soon israel will be no more. the world has had enough and they can not rewrite history fast enough. the internet has enlightened millions. the torah is online, they fear the common folks will read their witchery religion, a religion that sacrifices children in burnt offerings to their fire gods. this alone is fact, they worship the devil or some call it satan. and hasidics understands that if the world knows who they call g o d. the world will repent and throw them out. they base their religion on death and destruction and war, its in the framework on daily wat of life for them.

  14. The two Bushes, Clinton & Obama should be brought to justice but they never will be. They’ll just die with guilty consciences.

  15. Most shocking to me, was the destruction of Iraq’s water and sewage treatment plants by US air strikes.

Why would Mr Margolis find this “shocking”? Is he not aware of how the US behaved in Viet Nam, Korea, World War II, the Philippines?

Be outraged, by all means. Be righteously indignant and call for war crimes trials… but don’t pretend to be shocked (bear in mind: being actually shocked would mark you out as more naive than an indoctrinated child, and ignorant of history to the same extent as an American public-school sophomore).

Their destruction resulted in epidemics of cholera and other water-born diseases. Children were the primary victims.

That’s because children (and the elderly) were the primary targets. It is beyond laughable for anyone to assert that the Death Machine is not absolutely aware that destroying hygiene infrastructure will disproportionately kill children. the fact that this infrastructure is always included in targets for US/NATO’s first 100 sorties, is proof that they understand what the consequences are, and that it is intentionally retained as a part of their planning.

This is how the imperialist governments have always behaved – pontificate about having a “civilising mission” or a “manifest destiny” or a “responsibility to protect”, about being a “light unto the nations” and a “shining city on the hill”, while perpetrating an unbroken string of atrocities that go back millennia.

There is literally no excuse for being ignorant of the psychotype of individuals who are attracted to positions of power: they have the moral compass of a serial killer (and not a tame serial killer like ‘Dexter’).

Belgians, French, Italians, Germans and British in Africa, Asia and the Levant; the US in the US West, Hawai’i, the Philippines, and Viet Nam… go all the way back to Rome’s behaviour towards indigenes who got uppity (e.g., Carthage).

At least when Stalin was causing tens of millions of peasants to die of malnutrition, and Mao was Greatly Leaping to the worlds highest internal death toll, and Nasty Old ‘Dolf was causing general unpleasantness in the lives of internal enemies of his Reich, none of them pretended that they were doing it for the benefit of their victims.

There is a lot of truth in what you are saying. Dresden and Hiroshima, and the lack of any remorse by the perpetrators of these holocausts, suggest that major military assaults have been designed and led by functional psychopaths.

The recent article about Dresden on Unz was particularly disturbing. What is equally disturbing is how that bombing campaign was celebrated on the news media of the day as not only admirable, but heroic. The arrogant patriotism on display (pride in the ability to destroy and vanquish the enemy), and the reflexive indifference to the suffering and death that had been caused is remarkable.

We are a nasty species of animal and our technology has given us incredible powers to destroy. Either we get a handle on our nasty side or we will destroy ourselves.

And where is the left today on the issue of continued and incessant wars in the Middle East? Focused on who can use what type of bathroom. Totally out to lunch on the most important issue of our time–stopping the wars in the service of Israel.

The horror, the horror–and the stupidity–of humanity.

Either we get a handle on our nasty side or we will destroy ourselves.

Your binary scenario is not logical. It is more likely that a population reduction is in the future than a complete extinction. Our failure (or inability) to proceed logically does make it likely that the process will be unpleasant, even traumatic, but life should be good for the survivors as long as we avoid an all-out nuclear launch between the major powers.

The future belongs to whoever shows up for it.

This is the “tu quoque” fallacy: “We do bad things, but because others have done similar bad things it’s a’ight“.

It’s the dumbest trope imaginable – but particularly if when ‘we’ do it, we bray non-stop about how we’re doing it ‘for their own good’.

But where it’s a really really bad debating point, is when you’re talking absolute bullshit.

Here’s a set of challenges that will enable you to buttress your case, or reveal that you’re talking nonsense.

(I’ve specifically, deliberately left out slavery: even though the scale of Western slave operations dwarfed the localised slave markets everywhere except the Arab world, it is used by apologists to muddy the waters).

So here goes: you should be able to rattle off answers to these off the top of your head.

① give an example of the “non-West” mobs that have genocided their way through corners of the globe that are half a world away from their home base… I’m genuinely interested. (Maori legend says that the original tribes descended on Ao Tea Roa from Polynesia and ate all the existing inhabitants: that’s close, but probably not true)

② Name a post-Enlightenment[1] instance where a non-Western mob invaded, occupied and traversed a country killing and enslaving the indigenes as they went… as a matter of policy, and with bounties for the heads or scalps of indigenes killed.

③ Now name a similar instance of ① and ② where they did it while claiming that they were doing everyone an enormous favour by doing so. (That they were on a civilising mission, or had a “manifest destiny”, if you will). Note that the Muslim invasion of southern Europe is not a good example because there was zero systematic slaughter of the indigenes (plus it pre-dates the Enlightenment by 500 years).

④ Name a time when a non-Western country slaughtered upwards of 5 million civilians in order to try to prevent them from making their own decision about the ownership of capital. (That’s VietNam, Cambodia, Laos, for those playing at home).

⑤ Now name a similar instance where they did it claiming that they were doing it for the good of the entire region (or even the world)… to prevent all the regional ‘dominoes’ from falling, if you prefer it put that way.

inb4 ‘commie’: as an exceptionally well-trained economist, I fully understand why central planning is doomed to fail. However if a nation decides – through a democratic process – that it wants to follow some idiots on a fool’s errand and try central planning, that’s their sovereign right.

You might think it odd that I would assert that democratic processes furnish authority to experiment with the economic system, given that I also know that democratic preference expression is a scam (both mathematically and operationally)… but it’s still guaranteed to be a better judge of the “public” will than some bunch of sociopaths half a world away.

[1] Post-Enlightenment: rules out most Asiatic hordes too… Atilla, Genghis Khan, Tamerlane and Kublai Khan, which pre-date the Renaissance and Enlightenment by centuries. Boo hoo. Plus, they never claimed to be spreading “civilisation”.
