New data from Stanford economist Raj Chetty. (Here's my 2015 analysis of some of his old work.) From the New York Times' Upshot section: Extensive Data Shows Punishing Reach of Racism for Black Boys By EMILY BADGER, CLAIRE CAIN MILLER, ADAM PEARCE and KEVIN QUEALY MARCH 19, 2018 Black boys raised in America, even in...

    >such as Eric Holder’s old neighborhood of West Indians that kept young Eric carefully wrapped in a bourgeois bubble away from poisonous African-American culture

… and yet the older Eric still identifies 100% with said culture, as evidenced by his actions when in power. In spite of the fact that he is very clearly less than 50% subsaharan african by genetics.

This points out the utter failure of all kinds of civnat and meritocratic schemes; one’s skin is still one’s uniform, and nobody – N O B O D Y – enforces the “one drop rule” quite as well as non-Whites do in a White-built and White-majority society.

Although young black men get tagged as being violent, I seem to be noticing more and more black women involved in beatings and violent melees in the news. I don't know if this is really a trend or not. My perception may have become biased by an evening spent watching YouTube videos tagged "back girls fighting" about a year ago.

And these women are allowed/encouraged to raise children by themselves, becoming the sole source of morality in a household. The boys fight because, well, boys fight, regardless of race, and they grow up watching momma fight with no repercussions. The girls fight because, well, momma fights. The girls get slaps on the wrist, the boys get records (psst, school to prison pipeline), but the winners get female attention (because all of the girls want a guy who can win a scrap. Criminal records do nothing to deter the women from flocking to these guys.) Then, when the police are called in for a disturbance, learn that the suspect is a local brainbuster, then fire on sight, it’s time for marches!

If that guy’s kid is not as smart as his dad, he’s probably never going to get onto that first stage of the elevator that ends with high incomes like his dad’s.

Black women are twice as likely as black men to earn a tertiary degree.

In the 2015-16 academic year, Black women earned 85,616 associates degrees. This was 66.7 percent of all associate’s degrees awarded to African Americans. The gender gap was smaller for bachelor’s degree awards. Black women earned 64.1 percent of all bachelor’s degrees awarded to African Americans.

But the gender gap grows larger for master’s degrees. Nearly 70 percent of all master’s degrees awarded to African Americans in the 2015-16 academic year were earned by Black women.
There were 6,911 African Americans who earned doctoral degrees in professional practice fields such as medicine, law, dentistry, veterinary medicine, etc. Black women earned 64.5 percent of these degrees. Another 5,264 African Americans earned doctoral degrees in research fields. Of these 68.5 percent were earned by Black women.

    https://www.jbhe.com/2018/01/the-large-gender-gap-in-degree-attainments-among-african-americans/

    1. Black women are greedy, selfish and shortsighted. If they didn’t have the unmitigated right to perform child care (a black, female schizophrenic drug addict in a majority-Black voting district is seen as a better parent than a decorated and honorably discharged veteran) on their own, those flaws wouldn’t be so bothersome. Unfortunately, as America’s “strong single mothers-in-chief”, they’re able to pass on those values willy-nilly.

    2. As long as black women (en masse) are ready, willing and able to choose their own partners (with the assurance that Uncle Sugar will take care of any shortfalls), they’re going to choose 10s and 1s. This isn’t a joke or exaggeration. Visit any black-controlled area and you’ll quickly notice that Pareto’s Law is in effect. The majority of children are sired by celebrities, literal and otherwise. The preponderance of 6+’ tall children? 6+’ tall, “He could go pro!”, basketball players have their pick. Entire families of children who sing like birds and dance like autumn leaves?, sans training? Daddy was an entertainer (church choir, local singer, etc.), and the kids grow up to entertain mommy.
Conversely, children who can’t stop themselves from cursing like sailors, stealing unnecessary objects or defying authority as often as possible? They usually have predicate felon fathers. Children who are as slow as molasses, mentally? Momma needed a welfare bump (section 8 qualification, more food stamps, whatever…), and chose the closest available male (men with jobs, obviously, will never be as available for insemination duty as the “slow” guy receiving benefits.) On top of that, in the lower econimoc strata, women engaging in multiple partner sexcapades is distressingly common (and, for Maury Povich, profitable.) Popular Guy A can impregnate a dozen women in a weekend. If half of his sexual partners decide to foist off the resultant children on other men, the genetics of the issue don’t change in the least. Memory-holed they may be, but there are hundreds of stories on the internet involving children with odd numbers of grandparents.

    3. As far as horrific abuse is concerned: I’ve never met a non-black adult with electric iron scars (As in pressing the entire flat of the iron against the boy’s back, chest, face, groin or thigh.) For all I know, non-black mothers are equally fond of turning their Oster(tm) up to nine and getting rid of their son’s creases. But, I’ve inoculated hundreds of military personnel, performed fitness evaluation for dozens and taken barracks showers in the USA, Europe and Iraq. I’ve only seen those triangle-shaped scars on black men

"Another way to think about this is that female behavior is relatively similar across cultures while male behavior is what determines the type of culture."

I don't understand what you could mean by this. On the surface, it seems like an absurd statement. Women behave very differently across cultures and races. Black women are much more prone to having children out of wedlock, having different children by different fathers, paying no heed as to whether or not a potential baby daddy can provide a stable source of child support etc.

Non-black women have every opportunity to get knocked up by random men who aren't worth keeping around, but they generally choose not to. Most upper middle class woman would rather forego having children altogether as opposed to having one with an ex-felon. These are real and impactful differences in how women behave and these behavior differences can easily be observed in adolescent girls.

First time commenting and I am a young black women living in America. Black women have lower standards when it comes to mating because many of them believe it would be unrealistic to expect more and the ones that do expect more can be shamed for doing so. Men will literally shame you for caring about income for obvious reasons. This is a sweeping generalization but so is almost everything else on this site. The exceptions to this tend to be black women who are really attractive to black standards, successful yet single black women (the media is obsessed with them), highly conservative (not politically) Christian black women. The first group (really attractive) may not demand marriage before procreation but they only mate with men who have some type of financial success (sports, entertainment, business, etc.). The second group (successful, single black women) are usually holding out for their ideal black man (we use the acronym IBM) and are routinely written about in the media. The third group has higher expectations for obvious reasons. Having a strong father figure that is a provider helps (this has helped me) but peer pressure is still strong. If you are a young girl and know you are not beautiful for whatever reason and you don’t want to end up like the embarrassing perpetually single, “successful” black women on tv and don’t have a strong moral code, why not have a baby out of wedlock at 24 with your semi-boyfriend (young black people are more likely to engage in ill-defined relationships due to a fear of commitment and a belief that there is always something better)? It beats looking like you cannot get a man or being childless forever. Sidenote: unrealistic goals are a real problem with black youth. You would not believe how many aspire to be famous (rap, sing, model, sports). Again, totally generalizing and there are many that don’t fit these observations. If other women had our same issues, they would make similar decisions. We see this now with lower income whites who have lost many manufacturing jobs.

    O.K., right.

The statistical summaries reported in this paper have been cleared by the Census Bureau’s Disclosure Review Board release authorization number CBDRB-FY18-195.

But how they ensured privacy is secret:

The Census Bureau uses a number of different disclosure limitation techniques to protect Title 13 data—rounding, top-coding, data swapping, thresholds, random noise, cell suppression and complementary cell suppression, to name a few.
    :
Under Title 13, U.S.C., disclosure protection rules and memoranda are Census confidential and must be protected from disclosure and release, unless otherwise noted.

Sounds like a little bit of security by obscurity, not well thought of in the security field.

Some mechanisms exist to provide access to more detailed information on a restricted basis. These include Research Data Centers for approved researchers with Special Sworn Status, as well as remote on-line access in State Data Centers and Census Information Centers via the Advanced Query System for user-defined tables from Census 2000. The latter system allows users to request certain types of tables and then automatically reviews the tables to avoid disclosing confidential information.

Users receive only the tables that have passed disclosure review. Some microdata are accessible to approved researchers at the Census Bureau's Research Data Centers (RDCs).

The objective of the Center for Economic Studies (CES) and the RDCs is to increase the utility and quality of Census Bureau data products. Use of microdata can address important policy questions without the need for additional data collections. In addition, it is the best means by which the Census Bureau can check on the quality of the data it collects, edits, and tabulates.

These secure research facilities are located at various sites across the country. Access is strictly limited to researchers and staff authorized by the Bureau of the Census. All analysis must be performed within the secure RDC research facility.

Ensuring security at RDCs has several aspects: project oversight, a physically secure facility, personnel security, a secure computing environment, an on-site Census employee, and application of disclosure avoidance rules to the analytical results presented to the public.

Steve, how about adding a new arrow to your quiver and start making some FoIA requests? Start by simply asking in an e-mail for a copy of Census Bureau’s Disclosure Review Board release authorization number CBDRB-FY18-195, and when they refuse, turn it into an FoIA request. From personal experience I can tell you that once you start thinking in terms of the FoIA, all kinds of opportunities present themselves.

Thanks for the info. I searched for CBDRB-FY18-195 and all of the hits were on http://www.equality-of-opportunity.org
Looking around there I saw a fair amount of data from Chetty at http://www.equality-of-opportunity.org/data/
For example, the very first table has counts for each race by percentile (and much more). There are data dictionaries for each table there as well.

Of course it is easier to focus on economics than on race. For one thing, it is more comfortable. Just as importantly, if the problem is economic, there are many program options which can be tried like school choice. How to 'fix' the country's difficult and entrenched racial issues is far from clear. Systemic racism is more concrete, but not always obvious . Our current POTUS and the climate he had encouraged underscores the enormity of the problem.

Men of Color are treated like women in the workforce. The first graphic made the case that black men are falling off the top of the ladder. But the trend line for Black Men is the same as for all women. The real story is the unique privilege of white men.

Look at how our society treats--reacts to--Black Boys and tell me you're surprised. We accept that Black boys are a danger when they're wearing a hoodie and carrying Skittles. We treat them differently almost without exception compared to white boys who commit the same crime.

white males usually come from families that own and run companies and businesses that the sons inherit, work at, and continue to prosper while African American males lack those options. Black Americans wealth come from mainly working for someone else.

    >We accept that Black boys are a danger when they’re wearing a hoodie and carrying Skittles.
No, they are a danger when (per his friend Rachael Jenteal) they arrive home and return to (per other non-defendant testimony at trial) physically attack someone just standing on a sidewalk and hit their head onto the sidewalk.

  • The chief problem with being poor in 21st Century America is not that you can’t afford to buy enough stuff, it’s that you can’t afford to move away from other poor people.

This is the issue of poverty in a nutshell. There are people who spend their entire careers studying poverty, or who write earnestly about it for the Guardian or the NYT, and somehow miss this insight.

It would be, except “progressives”–including black “intellectuals”–argue that they are caused by “white racism”.

Given that, the fix is then trivial: separate white and black nations. With whites and their racism out of the picture, blacks will zoom to success.

Blank Slatists are celebrating this, eg:

    https://twitter.com/ProfDavidDeming/status/975695871567454208

Finally, and most importantly – the fact that the black-white income gap is so large and persistent for men – but not for women – argues very strongly against any kind of genetic or innate ability-based explanation for racial wage gaps. 10/x

My pet hobby horse of our innumerate “elites” is certainly in play here. But honestly this is well beyond that. It’s simply not cogent from the perspective of pretty elementary verbal logic.

Boiling it down the zeroth order theories here:
    - Blank slaters — “racism!”
    - HBD realists — “biological racial differences”

But both don’t account–at this simplistic zeroth order–for substantial sex skew in black vs. white performance given rough childhood parity of socio-economic status (or at least income). Both the “racism” excuse and the “racial differences” explaination would need some further extension\fine-tuning\tweaking, because they both are essentially offering only a racial explanation.

Yet this guy thinks “extra-special white racism against black men” is compelling, but that HBDers can’t come up with plausible HBD based arguments for why the racial skew would play our differently for the two sexes.

Well pilgrim, i can think of such an explanation right off the top of my head:

Men–on average–take on more mentally demanding jobs (principally in STEM, but also finance, manangement, law, etc.) and push harder at them and hence skew more in income based on cognitive ability than women do.

    Not good enough? Ok:
    – men are naturally more aggressive than women, and whites are better than blacks at controlling aggression and channelling it positively; i.e. relative to white men, black men turn less of their aggression into income and more of it into crime
    – white women have better marriage prospects and at any given level of either innate ability or socio-economic status don’t tend to push for their own income as hard as (single) black women (but rather push harder to marry a “good catch”)
    – negative effects of “acting white” meme affect black boys more than black girls; (college enrollments reflect this fact–much greater black sex skew than white sex skew)

Wow, turns out that sex actually entails significant behavioral and social differences so it’s actually ridiculously easy to come up with explanations–some HBDish, some more cultural–that explain a sex skew in racial difference, that is nontheless consistent with an overal HBDish theory of blacks’ relatively poorer economic academic/economic performance. Something you’d think a professor in the social sciences–at Harvard!–might be able to wrap his brain around. Alas no.

At least he got one part of this right:

It is hard for me to see the facts any other way.

In order to compound wealth, one has to be a minimally able custodian of it. The non-existent net worth of the average black family is prima facie evidence that blacks as a group quickly squander any wealth they come upon. The Friday schtick of dissolute government wards moving to the ‘burbs after a windfall and utterly failing to assimilate is funny because it’s true. As an aside, it would be neat to see Raj Chetty get ahold of state lotto records.

Value-subtractive auto accessories , garish pounds of jewelry, expensive, fast-depreciating home electronics, these things make up the investment vehicle one might label Blackshire Hathaway Class C. And it’s hit zero every year since 1865.

Design an intelligence test which correctly adjusts for the environmental effects of racism. Adjustment can be performed with a nifty function. Average black IQ = 85. Assuming that Average IQ should be 100, and assuming that there are no inate biological differences between the races, and assuming that measured IQ differences must be caused by environmental factors, black IQ adjusted for environmental racism (BIQAER) is equal to measured IQ + 15.
    Or;

People with extremely opposing political views on race can read this same study and have it reinforce their opposing views with opposite interpretations.

The NYT narrates with a politically left interpretation of the data:

The disparities that remain also can’t be explained by differences in cognitive ability, an argument made by people who cite racial gaps in test scores that appear for both black boys and girls. If such inherent differences existed by race, “you’ve got to explain to me why these putative ability differences aren’t handicapping women,” said David Grusky, a Stanford sociologist who has reviewed the research.

Replace "cognitive ability" with "institutional racism" and that exact argument now caters to the political right: The disparities can't explained by institutional racism... you've got to explain why such institutional racism isn't handicapping women.

The New York Times has the most amazing JavaScript data visualizations. The world's best open source JavaScript data visualization library D3 is made and maintained by Mike Bostock, who used to lead NYT's data visualizations. Apparently, NYT still has that caliber of data visualization JavaScript talent. This one features a non-interactive, but still beautiful JavaScript animations.

It would be nice to see right wing media, like Breitbart, get similarly talented computer programmers to providin competitive data visualizations to make their arguments.

Straw man argument regarding cognitive ability as it inverts cause and effect. “Explained by” is to assume correlation equals causation. Cognitive ability will be a strong determinate of life outcomes (unidirectional cause), while life outcomes are not a determinate of cognitive ability (and not a two-way street).

That I won the lottery and am rich, does not make me smart. But if I’m smart I have a much higher probability of doing well in life as compared to someone with low cognitive ability.

Too many people that don’t understand statistics and logic write on matters that turn on understanding stats and logic.

When has a Breitbart article ever mentioned actual data?

Breitbart... engages in rhetorical combat. So does left wing media like NYT or CNN or WaPo. But the latter often feature more serious analysis, more genuine in depth reporting. Breitbart, and similar sites, should grow in the more serious stuff to gain more equal footing.

My reason for paying attention to Breitbart regularly is that they pay attention to stories that receive no mainstream press at all (or stories that get buried). They also frequently rebroadcast stuff from more respectable, longer-established foreign sources. In the time that it has become fashionable to reflexively dismiss Breitbart I have never seen them proven to be as flatly wrong, as baldly ideological, or as brazenly dishonest as NPR, CNN, or MSNBC. I have not seen Breitbart criticized with specific examples of unabiguous lying or falsehood, it’s a lot of whining about the tacky color. They have op-ed writers like Delingpole? How is that even an observation? They’re Zionists? So is the rest of the respectable media and academy, and Breitbart at least points out hoaxes (the mainstream media largely does not, and when they do it is never at the same volume).
The mainstream media has a very simple and inarguably dishonest pattern right now. It’s not new — it was the pattern they used to generate popular enthusiasm for World War one, which should give one pause — but it’s brazen and uniquely relied on nowadays.
Tell a flat out lie, loudly.
Later on clarify that it isn’t true, quietly.
Then talk about the lie as though it were a thoroughly accepted and proven pattern, being careful to be non-specific.
This pattern is visible in the Russian hackers story, in the hate hoax stories, in coverage of Charlottesville, in anti-gun campaigning pretending to be news, in the idea that the Trump presidency is illegitimate, in the idea that the Trump White House is beset with scandals, in each “scandal” individually, in the idea that Assad “gassed his own people,” in the migrant crisis, in the claimed Russian assassinations, and so on.

Part of this blog post is hidden here. On my RSS feed, I see more of the article than I do here at the Unz.com page.

Specifically this part seems to be hidden:

"So much for the Theory of Intersectionality.

Actually, the “putative” IQ differences are handicapping black women relative to white women: a much higher percentage of white women grew up in, say, the overall top one percent of income than did black women, just as cognitive test scores would predict. What Chetty has found is instead that there is a disparity between current income of black women and black men of the same income background.

It’s almost as if America has had a giant system of affirmative action over the last half century to benefit blacks, but it doesn’t work for blacks who are criminals. So it benefits black women far more than it benefits black men because of, as Chetty’s data demonstrates, the black males’ extremely high rate of serious criminality. (Here’s an Obama Administration report on how much higher the black homicide offender rate is.)

As for black women vs. white women, keep in mind, it’s not there are no differences in income distribution between white and black women — there are — it’s just that the small number of black women who grew up in affluent families tend to do about as well as white women who grew up in affluent families.

In contrast, black males growing up in all income levels have an unfortunate tendency to be keeping it real than white males who grew up in families at the same income level.

Technical question on Chetty’s methodology: I bet 27-32 year old white women in Utah earn less individually than black women.

Answer: It appears to be individual income for the children as adults, not family or household income (which is what is measured when they are children). Is this correct? If so, younger black women have long been known (see Thomas Sowell decades ago) to be more likely to be employed than white women, more of whom have husbands who can bring enough to support the family."

As an affluent white guy whose stay-at-home white wife has a large social circle, I can tell you: the average IQ of the stay at home moms I know (mostly spouses of rich white guys) is higher than the women I meet in the work world. One way to understand the relatively poor income performance of white women in these graphs is that they reflect the trope that women earn 77 (?) cents for every dollar a man does (which presumably mostly reflects white women and white men).

This would imply that they would regress to a lower mean, and, one would expect, regress much more dramatically.

On the other hand, if we were to consider their regression to the mean on IQ based on income of parents, that regression would not differ much from that of white males.

And if black women and white women both regress the same in income, that would seem to imply that black women do somewhat better than white women fixing IQ, because one would expect black women to regress more on IQ than white women.

I'd expect then that, fixing IQs, white women choose lower paying careers than black women, on average. No doubt having husbands who make more money would allow this.

it is much easier for a white women , especially from an Upper Middle Class background, to find a wealthy Husband….Black women will have a much harder time finding an Upper Middle class man to marry…many of the Wealthy Black men will find white or hispanic wives…

White women are smart to find a wealthy husband so than can pursue their dream careers and not higher paying, more stressful careers. They will be much more likely to have lower incomes than the Black women who will more likely be single, or single mothers.

Would be interesting to see the data split according to single Men verse married men and single verse married women. I imagine the married white women will have wealthier husbands than the married Black women, which will result in higher household income for the married white women compared to the married Black women.

Of course, this is turning into a giant target for hackers, such as those wanting to know Trump’s income.

Indeed. I think it would be easy to identify a number of prominent people from the Chetty data. For example, income stream details, child/spouse events. That is even if they were smart enough to remove things like age information for dependents. The examples I gave are necessary for them to create their dataset (and my guess would be they use dependents ages to check matches just as they use the age of those claiming dependents to check parental status).

Speaking of which, the 15-50 approach they use for non-parent checking (see excerpt in my earlier comment) is terrible in the case of inner city blacks. Grandparents are common in that age range.

Plus, it’s all reported at the census block level, and the average census block has a little over thirty people in it. Some are empty, so the average in populated census blocks might be two or three times that, say 75 to 100. There are web apps that will return the census block number for any physical address. That narrows the matching problem down a lot.

This pattern is visible in the Russian hackers story, in the hate hoax stories, in coverage of Charlottesville, in anti-gun campaigning pretending to be news, in the idea that the Trump presidency is illegitimate, in the idea that the Trump White House is beset with scandals, in each "scandal" individually, in the idea that Assad "gassed his own people," in the migrant crisis, in the claimed Russian assassinations, and so on.

You have to be a special kind of precious like these authors to pretend that any sort of incarceration is the result of a youthful slip up wherein black boys of well off parents are punished more harshly than white boys for the same crime. The threshold event - a crime serious enough to warrant incarceration - isn't something easily fabricated.

They make this argument in general terms - viz, the proportion of black crime is a sort of invention of "overpolicing" in black neighborhoods. I always counter though that murders perpetrated by blacks are commensurate with other rates of black crime - are they really proposing that there are scores of murder victims at the hands of whites that police don't follow up on because of white privilege or whatever fool notion they've concocted? For each of those black-perpetrated murders for which they're convicted or plead to there's a cold, lifeless body as State's Exhibit "A."

Black women can be surly and don't always make the best employees but you can see how having a few around to tick the mandated diversity boxes is preferable to having a black felon with a history of violence ready to explode on staff. They seem to fill the clock-punching 9-5 positions in City government at a rate of at least 5-1 black female to black make in my experience. A large proportion of the variance between black men and black women is likely attributable to diversity requirements and the preference for black women over black men for makework jobs, which they're now pointing to as evidence of racism.

Tiny Duck is probably on to something here, in his own peculiar way.

I’ve personally been acquainted with four black people in my life who grew up very wealthy. The sources of the family wealth were as follows: Daddy was a famous athlete; daddy was a famous artist; and two separate people with dads who were successful (but not famous) studio musicians. Granted, all of these skills are partly heritable, but even so, these are not lines of work where daddy can pull a few strings to have his almost-but-not-quite-as-gifted offspring set up in reasonable comfort for life.

Most of the white kids I’ve met who grew up rich had daddies who were businessmen or lawyers, with the occasional dad who was a doctor. Excepting perhaps medicine, it’s easier for a successful man in these professions to pass on a portion of his success to his kids, assuming the kids are reasonably competent. But a dad who’s a multimillionaire NBA star can’t just hand his shoes and jersey to his son and say, “here, you take over.”

    Insightful comment.

Mr. Jawando, the son of a Nigerian father and a white mother, grew up poor in Silver Spring, Md. The Washington suburb contains some of the rare neighborhoods where black and white boys appear to do equally well. Mr. Jawando, who identifies as black, is now a married lawyer with three daughters. He is among the black boys who climbed from the bottom to the top.

When Jawando was running for Congress in 2016, WAPO reported that he and his wife owed $160,000 in law school debt. When his father died in 2017, it was requested that money be donated to a college fund for Jawando's three daughters in lieu of flowers.

Jawando played basketball for DC's St. Johns College High School and Catholic University. Tuition for St. John's will be $19,925 for 2018-2019.

Using the bi-racial son of an African immigrant as a success story was really disingenous on the part of the New York Times.

You guys are trying too hard to explain the male/female disparity in the article. The New York Times is just misrepresenting the data. Check out the charts in the appendix of the actual study. There are substantial White male/Black male gaps in high school completion, college attendance, and incarceration. The White female/Black female gaps are much smaller/nonexistent.

Just took another look there (you are right of course) and another interesting factoid appears in Figure VIII on page 83. Although white women do better than black women overall, once you start controlling for other variables then black women actually do better for all of the cases they give.

    The Widest Achievement Gap
    David L. Kirp
    National Affairs
    Fall 2010

It is hard to overstate the plight of African-American boys and young men in our education system today. On every measure of educational attainment, they fare the worst; despite waves of reform, their situation has not changed appreciably in 30 years.

The gap between their performance and that of their peers is perceptible from the first day of kindergarten, and only widens thereafter. In the 2008 National Assessment of Educational Progress — the massive, federally mandated report card on student performance, measured in grades 4, 8, and 12 — the reading scores of African-American boys in eighth grade were barely higher than the scores of white girls in fourth grade. In math, 46% of African-American boys demonstrated "basic" or higher grade-level skills, compared with 82% of white boys. On the National Education Longitudinal Survey, 54% of 16-year-old African-American males scored below the 20th percentile, compared with 24% of white males and 42% of Hispanic males. Having well-educated parents did not close the gap: In 2006, 43% of black high-school seniors with at least one college-educated parent failed to demonstrate even basic reading comprehension, nearly twice the percentage of whites.

According to a College Board report published earlier this year, black male students are 2.4 times as likely to have been suspended and twice as likely to have repeated a grade as white males. High-school graduation rates tell the same story — just 42% of black males graduated on time in 2006, compared with 71% of white males. After leaving school, these dropouts generally seem to encounter only more failure: Among 16- to 24-year-old black men not enrolled in school, fewer than half have jobs; about a third are in prison or jail, or on probation or parole.

Black men also fare badly when compared to black women — who, it is worth remembering, grow up in similar family and cultural circumstances and attend the same schools. Black men are three times more likely than black women to be suspended; their high-school graduation rate is 9% lower; and they are only half as likely to get a college degree.

Overall a great comment, but regarding

Black men also fare badly when compared to black women — who, it is worth remembering, grow up in similar family and cultural circumstances and attend the same schools.

I agree with the family and schools part, but wonder about the cultural circumstances. How similar are the cultural worlds for black boys and girls? Can someone with more experience of those cultures comment? Obviously there is significant overlap, but I suspect some big differences as well (e.g. how involved in gang culture are the girls). I assume income levels matter greatly here as well.

    1. Realizes it is possible to draw the conclusions you do from his work?
    2. Has done so himself?

I think Chetty had IRS 1040 data, with pseudonymous SSN numbers, but that doesn't have race. So he got the Census Bureau to work with the IRS (maybe???) to match 1040 tax returns with Census Bureau race self-identification.

If he can pull that off, he ought to be able to get the College Board and the ACT to match up SAT/ACT test scores with race and income.

Of course, this is turning into a giant target for hackers, such as those wanting to know Trump's income.

Plus, it's all reported at the census block level, and the average census block has a little over thirty people in it. Some are empty, so the average in populated census blocks might be two or three times that, say 75 to 100. There are web apps that will return the census block number for any physical address. That narrows the matching problem down a lot.

Res, how is he connecting parental incomes with child adult incomes? Is that a self reported estimation reported in the american community surveys? I know I don't have to list who my parents are on the tax return. I don't remember if one lists them in the census- how was it legal for this guy to de-itentify individuals tax returns and connect them to census data? The govt gave him the names of individuals and their tax returns and the names of individuals in the census data? Or at least gave him addresses of both?

I am completely baffled as to how this analysis was possible and how we can be sure he didn't omit all sorts of people who he couldn't really identify. Can someone explain?

Res, how is he connecting parental incomes with child adult incomes?

I think dependents on the parental tax returns. This excerpt from the paper is for something different, but I think the implication is clear:

We define father presence as an indicator for whether the child is claimed by a male on a tax form in the year he is matched to a parent.

I looked harder and here is more detail on their process from Appendix A. Data Construction:

Sample Construction. We begin with the set of children born between 1978 and 1983, based on birth dates recorded in the Numident file (22.8 million children), which contains records on all persons in the U.S. who have ever had a Social Security Number (SSN). For each child, we define the parent(s) as the first person(s) who claim the child as a dependent on a 1040 tax form. If parents are married but filing separately, we assign the child to both parents. To eliminate dependent claiming by siblings or grandparents, in the case of a potential match to married parents or single mothers, we require that the mother be 15-50 at the birth of the child. In the case of children claimed by a single father, we require that he be between 15-50 at the birth of the child.42 If no such eligible match occurs in 1994, the first year of the data in which we have dependent claiming information, we search subsequent years through 2015 until a valid match is found.
Once we match a child to parents, we hold this definition of parents fixed regardless of subsequent dependent claims or changes in marital status. For example, a child matched to married parents in 1996 who divorce in 1997 will always be matched to the two original parents. Conversely, a child matched to a single parent in 1996 who marries in 1997 will be considered matched to a single parent, though spouse income will be included in our definition of parent income because we measure parent income at the family level in our baseline analysis.

Many more details are available in the appendices.

P.S. On another note, one thing I found absolutely stunning (but which seems obvious on reflection) in Appendix Table VIII is that Asians and Hispanics had about 80% and 50% respectively foreign born parents.

Please keep in mind that we aren't talking about white and black women having the same income, we are talking about white and black women having the same income when they come from equal income parents.

Yes, but Chetty isn’t denying that there is likely to be a gap in test scores between black and white women when matching for parental income. One would expect that white women from the 90th+ percentile in parental income have some degree of higher IQs than black women from the same demographic, as do the white men vs black men. Yet, white women don’t translate their cognitive advantage into any wage per hour advantage. And it seems they are equally educated vs. black women from the same demographic as well. But normally a cognitive advantage does translate into advantages in these life outcomes.

So I wonder if what the impact of IQ is within white women from a certain income percentile. As in, taking black women out of the analysis, how much more wage per hour are white women from the 90th+ percentile of parental income percentile earning per point of IQ? If IQ correlates with higher individual income for white women within the same parental income percentile, then that gives us an indication of what affirmative action is worth for black women.

High delinquencies lead to higher assessments and poor maintenance which leads to higher delinquencies as unit owners refuse to pay more for maintenance they’re not getting, and so on and so forth. Losing the FHA qualification is a huge event in the life of a condominium. Usually at that point the market is limited to investors seeking rental properties and the Board is pressured to waive any restrictions on the percentage of units available to let.

One needs to pay attention to what the graphs are actually saying.

Among the more important graphs are those plotting "average individual income rank of kids" vs. "income of parents".

These are basically graphs plotting regression to the mean for various groups, not direct income of those groups. Thus, both white women and white men greatly outperform in income black women and black men respectively -- a fact not represented in these graphs.

The interesting fact uncovered by these graphs is that regression to the mean in white women is essentially the same as that in black women and black men, and that regression is quite severe. (The graphs don't make it evident that black men and black women have roughly the same regression to the mean -- again, quite severe.)

The only group that does a good job of escaping regression to the mean is white males. They tend very much to do as well as their parents did.

Who knew even white women would regress so much? Perhaps, though, it isn't so surprising. How many well educated white women go into non profit work, for example?

I’d expect then that, fixing IQs, white women choose lower paying careers than black women, on average. No doubt having husbands who make more money would allow this.

Black women are twice as likely as black men to earn a tertiary degree.

    A few things.

First, how well correlated are general post secondary degrees to the top 1% of income? My guess is that there are few Ph.D.’s in the 1% of income. You’re probably looking at black women earning M.A.s in summers as Public School teachers to boost their income prospects on the collectively bargained scale, or gunning for an administrative position in a school district – but neither of these will be anywhere near the 1% of incomes.

Second, I was writing about blacks getting on the elevator of Affirmative Action at elite institutions which is parlayed into greater and greater career prospects yielding 1% incomes. That’s different than getting preferences for a $50K makework government job. Think Michelle Obama getting into Princeton, then HLS, and then BigLaw, and then her well-compensated Hospital sinecure. She’s likely above the black average but not near the cut off for successful non-black applicants in her Princeton class. If she had never been admitted to Princeton – and had rather found her level at Illinois or similar – she’d likely never have made it to HLS and so forth.

Third, despite the gender gaps among blacks, blacks in the 1% of income probably still skew heavily male even without regard for athletes and entertainers.

I don't know if this is really a trend or not. My perception may have become biased by an evening spent watching YouTube videos tagged "back girls fighting" about a year ago.

At my integrated high school, black women fought outside, after school, regularly. It was literally a spectacle, with all the black students forming a ring around them and hooting and hollering. It's pretty rare for me to see a black person around here driving a non-luxury car.

There's a black woman in my building who has some kind of corporate job, but apparently hasn't paid her maintenance in over a year (scuttlebutt from someone on the condo board).

There's another one who drives an enormous Range Rover. There's a black man who drives a BMW sedan, and even got a toy electric BMW for his little kid to drive around on.

Driving through the poorest and blackest neighborhood of my old hometown last year, I saw at least one Maserati Quattroporte parked in someone's driveway.

I posted this on the other thread before Steve wrote about it, but I think that it's important. The policy prescription from the study is frightening.

Here’s the money shot from the study:

Finding #7: The black-white gap is not immutable: black boys who move to better neighborhoods as children have significantly better outcomes.

Black men who move to better areas – such as those with low poverty rates, low racial bias, and higher father presence – earlier in their childhood have higher incomes and lower rates of incarceration as adults. These findings show that environmental conditions during childhood have causal effects on racial disparities, demonstrating that the black-white income gap is not immutable.

The challenge is that very few black children currently grow up in environments that foster upward mobility. Fewer than 5 percent of black children currently grow up in areas with a poverty rate below 10 percent and more than half of black fathers present. In contrast, 63 percent of white children grow up in areas with analogous conditions.

Hmm. Looks to me like the answer is to move blacks kids into white (and Asian) neighborhoods to improve their environment. And, shockingly, that’s the prescription.

Our results show that the black-white gap in upward mobility is driven primarily by environmental factors that can be changed.

. . . Policies that reduce residential segregation or enable black and white children to attend the same schools without achieving racial integration within neighborhoods and schools would also likely leave much of the gap in place.

Initiatives whose impacts cross neighborhood and class lines and increase upward mobility specifically for black men hold the greatest promise of narrowing the black-white gap. There are many promising examples of such efforts: mentoring programs for black boys, efforts to reduce racial bias among whites, interventions to reduce discrimination in criminal justice, and efforts to facilitate greater interaction across racial groups.

As always, the last Five-Year Plan failed because our earlier comrades weren’t dedicated enough. Busing wasn’t enough. Just having black and white kids in the same school won’t close the gap. We must integrate not just the schools but the neighborhoods, block by block, street by street, house by house.

In addtion, we must force white children (and their parents) to become close with their new black neighbors. Naturally, we will need to re-educate white children and show them how terribly racist they are. (South Park’s Tolerance Camp was just a bit ahead of its time.)

Naturally, we’ll need to re-educate the neighborhood’s police and school administrators to help them understand that their racism is responsible for higher arrest rates and school discipline for black boys.

Stalin would have loved Chetty and Hendren. I’m sure that the two of them live in heavily black neighborhoods and send their kids to schools with lots of black kids. I mean, they believe all of this right?

Well, they’ve already tried mixing the black with healing white using Section 8 and subsequently a lot of Obama antics. How did that fare?

  • But what does this mean for intersectionality?

According to intersectionality, black women are double oppressed because they are black and women so 2x units of oppression.

Black men however are oppressed only because they are black so x units of oppression.

2x > x, therefore black women should be doing even worse than black men. But the data suggests this isn’t the case.

Criminal records do nothing to deter the women from flocking to these guys.) Then, when the police are called in for a disturbance, learn that the suspect is a local brainbuster, then fire on sight, it's time for marches!

The data presented in the NYT article then go on to demonstrate significant single parent differences. However, Cherry seems unwilling to connect this to the fact that white women and black women have vastly different rates of employment and income needs due to the marriage gap. Black women should actually be earning more than white women given the single parent gap alone but are likely held back by lower cognitive ability.

I also imagine we see the cumulative effect of affirmative action across income cohorts. Black women will likely have more opportunities for high earning jobs in any given career field that msot white women and this may also encourage black women to stay employed even when married.

As an aside, smart blacks can be considered a sort of minor aristocracy in our age due to the near guarantee of high life-long income in AA positions.

  • The cause-effect conversation on the black-white gap usually centers around IQ and income brackets and how that doesn’t explain the entire gap for blacks, and that because of this, (backed by anecdotes but difficult to measure) there is an “impulsiveness” factor – a shorter time preference combined with greater aggressiveness (more T?, Earlier T compared to whites?).

This thing about the black women doing better relatively to black men makes me wonder if there is an effect coming from Dalrock’s hypothesis of marriage changing to a child-support model.

Grant that blacks have shorter time preferences and lower IQ (to consider long term consequences). I would think that black women would have a greater incentive to divorce and invoke the child support model, and in fact to repeat this as many times as possible. Since our laws prioritize child support, there’s no need to get married.

I would like to see this finding of Chetty’s modified to allow for child support paid and received.

I have to say, when I hear black men doing worse than predicted, black women doing better, it sure makes my brain say hmm.

Not to say that blacks don’t have extra aggressiveness and shorter time preferences, but the destruction of the nuclear family with the child support/alimony model might affect blacks (with the shorter time preference, lower IQ) than whites.

Just another way of saying that IQ effects are regressive (affecting more negatively the lower they are)..

“You have to be a special kind of precious like these authors to pretend that any sort of incarceration is the result of a youthful slip up wherein black boys of well off parents are punished more harshly than white boys for the same crime. Exactly. This claim made frequently, but is just wrong. Black crime is underpunished. Police allow offenders in black neighborhoods to get away with all kinds of things that would never be tolerated in a white neighborhood, because they are just too busy. Blacks often ignore the impact of prior convictions on prosecutorial decisions, and complain when, say, they are being treated worse for the same crime than a white co-defendant, when it is their third offense and the white’s first. Police, prosecutors, and judges bend over backward to give juveniles second, third, and fourth chances, but can’t do it if someone is violent or has a gun.

Yes, talent in the arts, music, and athletics all involve traits that are non-cognitive. So the kids were probably low IQ. In the U.S. these fields are ruthlessly competitive. In Japan the kids of entertainers of various sorts can eke out a living via nepotism, due to the way the television, movie, and advertising industries are structured.

Sometimes I wonder if the route by which mainstream society might become HBD-aware is these ridiculous mainstream articles which present reams of evidence all pointing clearly at HBD, while the mindlessly orthodox authors assume everyone will reach the same nonsensical conclusion that they espouse -- it is all due to white racism. If the authors could simply acknowledge human biodiversity, all the graphs and data analysis in this article would fall neatly into a clear pattern. Trying to pretend, as they do, that all these interlocking data patterns are caused by the all-powerful force of white racism seems so incredibly farcical.

It’s going to be interesting to see what happens to SJW theory when Nigerian and Angolan immigrants replace the Indians and Pakistanis in places like inner city Baltimore or DC. Once the subcontinentals earn enough cash (which takes a generation, given that a large amount of money has to go in the meantime to shipping the tiger children off to magnet or private schools-an utterly necessary expense given the local schools), they flee to the safety of the suburbs: just as their Taiwanese and Korean predecessors did a couple of decades ago when they got enough money. I don’t think they’ve forgotten what happened to Jaswinder Singh.

Someone has to replace them to keep the ghetto economy rolling, though, otherwise the local politicians will shriek, and the Democratic Party-being more culturally left than anything we’ve seen in US history-will have to respond. So, my bet will be that the third wave will be actual Africans from Africa. The lefties are deluding themselves if they think some high-octane Igbo or Portuguese speaker who is bent on pushing his kids hard educationally wants anything more to do with the ghetto underclass outside of business than the East or South Asians did, or that said ghetto underclass isn’t going to view them as yet another middleman minority-or possibly even worse when they realize that they’re no different than the previous waves.

Those lines of work all tend towards winner take all rewards structures so any regression towards the mean is disproportionately harmful. (perhaps that is just a fancier way of making the same point as you were)

Most of the Black females I have worked with make more money than I do. Often, they are struggling to pay their rent and bills. They just seem to have very poor life skills and make very poor decisions. They will eat out every day and spend a lot of money on their clothes and hair and nails and cute clothes for their kids, and even their extended families’ kids.

-Single black women without a bachelor’s degree ages 20–39 have a net worth of $0.

Oh, I see, thanks. They are still using the unfalsifiable. Despite how black girls did, racism hurts black boys. If black girls did similarly poorly, it would have been racism against both. The old ad hoc hypothesis.

The odd thing is, as sure as people are that this proves racism, you could use the same logic to demonstrate the opposite - since it didn’t affect black girls in the same way, it mustn’t be racism!

Observations like this is why you’re not permitted to contribute to NYT reader comments anymore!

Please keep in mind that we aren't talking about white and black women having the same income, we are talking about white and black women having the same income when they come from equal income parents.

Comparing net worth might be more insightful than comparing income, or perhaps some combination of the two, the way SES combines income, job status, and highest educational level achieved.

Income is cash flow; net worth is cash flowed … in and not flowed back out. Net worth takes into account the ability to live within your means and plan for the future.

No, damn it, the Earth MUST be the center of the universe! Any other explanation is unpossible. With just a little more tinkering, all these epicycles will line up perfectly — then you’ll feel pretty stupid that you ever bought into this racist alt-right “heliocentric” nonsense.

Many of the African-American men I work with are custodians and security guards with the odd payroll clerk thrown in. Most of these guys have second jobs with FedEx or the local football stadium, or do security at conventions, or buy and sell or fix cars, etc. Odd jobs, but they do well, and own houses, classic cars, and fancy trucks. They only have to have a high school degree to do all this. One Black guy I know makes more money giving kids conga drumming lessons at schools and day care centers than he does at his government job. These guys are just really good at making ends meet. One of the security guards was an elderly man who had been a police officer, then worked for BART, then worked as a security guard for the museum. When he retired he had 3 pensions and social security and free rides on BART forever.

It’s pretty rare for me to see a black person around here driving a non-luxury car.

There’s a black woman in my building who has some kind of corporate job, but apparently hasn’t paid her maintenance in over a year (scuttlebutt from someone on the condo board).

There’s another one who drives an enormous Range Rover. There’s a black man who drives a BMW sedan, and even got a toy electric BMW for his little kid to drive around on.

Driving through the poorest and blackest neighborhood of my old hometown last year, I saw at least one Maserati Quattroporte parked in someone’s driveway.

In the black parts of DC metro areas quite a few condos have gone belly up because the payment of HOA fees is seen as optional. Since the fees aren’t paid maintenance suffers, water bills go unpaid and the HOA fees skyrocket. Then at some point FHA stops making loans for units in the building and the price of units plummet and can only be bought for cash.

Many condo buildings east of the Anacostia have a higher-than-average number of owners who are behind in their condo dues. Many mortgage lenders won't qualify loans on units in buildings with this issue, so many would-be buyers can’t buy in these buildings.

  • “Other studies show that boys, across races, are more sensitive than girls to disadvantages like growing up in poverty or facing discrimination.”

Men are responsible for many of the decisions that make or break a successful family. Men’s income is more variable than a woman’s, who tend to cluster towards the middle. So you can have a successful family with a high earning husband and an average earning wife, or an unsuccessful family with an unemployed husband and an average earning wife.

“Another way to think about this is that female behavior is relatively similar across cultures while male behavior is what determines the type of culture”

Meh. Female *income* is similar across cultures. Female culture is highly variable, even within races, let alone between races.

  • But of course we can tell from the racial distribution of NFL cornerbacks that it’s actually Asian Indians who are most sought out by pro teams for their ability to deal out instant violence to pass receivers.

You use the cornerback example a lot, but I would guess that cornerbacks have lower violent crime rates than, say, black NFL running backs. Cornerbacks need to be violent, like most NFL positions, but they also need to have some restraint: aside from bumping within 5 yards of scrimmage, they can’t hit the receiver before the ball gets to him; they can’t hit him in the head; they can’t hit him when he’s “defenseless”; and they have to know when it’s better to go for the ball or a wrapping tackle rather than the terminator shot.

OT but a very notable item on the extremely weird nature of 'multi-cultural' news ... and showing the Instant Memory Hole at work

Y'all remember Saudi Prince Bandar - 'Bandar Bush' thanks to his close relations with the Bush family - Quite a famous 'celeb'

Well he apparently committed suicide a week ago 12 March 2018 at a London airport when the UK refused him entry ... video of him jumping to his death apparently on YouTube

Bandar's death and funeral prayers etc seem to be leading news across the Muslim world

But just about zero in Western news ... of a famous-in-the-West royal dude

    http://aanirfan.blogspot.co.uk/2018/03/prince-bandar-shock.html

Wrong Bandar. The dead one was Bandar bin Khalid bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, not famous compared to the notorious Bandar bin Sultan Al Saud. The video is of some drunk jumping off a balcony in Atlanta’s airport. The famous Bandar is likely still being held by the Crown Prince and having his ill-gotten gains extorted, though he may also be being held even after signing away his assets – he allegedly got caught a few years ago preparing to stage a coup and was not seen in public for two years.

The black top 1% would have a very disproportionate amount of professional athlete dads wouldn’t it? Dad’s 40 yard dash time helped make him wealthy, but its not a trait that engenders wealth creation for others.

Athletes and entertainers would likely be in there. Naturally, professional athletes' income peaks early in life and falls off precipitously. There's a 30 for 30 exploring that - they tend to spend like they're on a lifetime career trajectory rather than one that lasts an average of a couple of years and a maximum of 10 or in rarefied cases 15 years. So there's a big tax bite on the high front-loaded income, and they spend money like 20 something young men would spend money. The story going around in sports talk circles goes that during his time with the 76ers, Allen Iverson didn't pack for road trips - he bought new clothes and shoes in every City during a road trip and just left them behind.

Outside of athletes and entertainers my surmise is that you get the blacks who are smart enough to qualify for the Affirmative Action "elevator" as I call it - if you're black and have scores that meet the significantly reduced standards for blacks for admission to elite institutions (above average but not sterling), you'll parlay that first AA admit into a stronger graduate school application assisted by AA, and then these cumulative effects get parlayed into your first job (where they're looking for a good black guy to check their diversity quota boxes). If that guy's kid is not as smart as his dad, he's probably never going to get onto that first stage of the elevator that ends with high incomes like his dad's.

    A few things.

First, how well correlated are general post secondary degrees to the top 1% of income? My guess is that there are few Ph.D.'s in the 1% of income. You're probably looking at black women earning M.A.s in summers as Public School teachers to boost their income prospects on the collectively bargained scale, or gunning for an administrative position in a school district - but neither of these will be anywhere near the 1% of incomes.

Second, I was writing about blacks getting on the elevator of Affirmative Action at elite institutions which is parlayed into greater and greater career prospects yielding 1% incomes. That's different than getting preferences for a $50K makework government job. Think Michelle Obama getting into Princeton, then HLS, and then BigLaw, and then her well-compensated Hospital sinecure. She's likely above the black average but not near the cut off for successful non-black applicants in her Princeton class. If she had never been admitted to Princeton - and had rather found her level at Illinois or similar - she'd likely never have made it to HLS and so forth.

Third, despite the gender gaps among blacks, blacks in the 1% of income probably still skew heavily male even without regard for athletes and entertainers.

    1. Black women are greedy, selfish and shortsighted. If they didn't have the unmitigated right to perform child care (a black, female schizophrenic drug addict in a majority-Black voting district is seen as a better parent than a decorated and honorably discharged veteran) on their own, those flaws wouldn't be so bothersome. Unfortunately, as America's "strong single mothers-in-chief", they're able to pass on those values willy-nilly.

    2. As long as black women (en masse) are ready, willing and able to choose their own partners (with the assurance that Uncle Sugar will take care of any shortfalls), they're going to choose 10s and 1s. This isn't a joke or exaggeration. Visit any black-controlled area and you'll quickly notice that Pareto's Law is in effect. The majority of children are sired by celebrities, literal and otherwise. The preponderance of 6+' tall children? 6+' tall, "He could go pro!", basketball players have their pick. Entire families of children who sing like birds and dance like autumn leaves?, sans training? Daddy was an entertainer (church choir, local singer, etc.), and the kids grow up to entertain mommy.
Conversely, children who can't stop themselves from cursing like sailors, stealing unnecessary objects or defying authority as often as possible? They usually have predicate felon fathers. Children who are as slow as molasses, mentally? Momma needed a welfare bump (section 8 qualification, more food stamps, whatever...), and chose the closest available male (men with jobs, obviously, will never be as available for insemination duty as the "slow" guy receiving benefits.) On top of that, in the lower econimoc strata, women engaging in multiple partner sexcapades is distressingly common (and, for Maury Povich, profitable.) Popular Guy A can impregnate a dozen women in a weekend. If half of his sexual partners decide to foist off the resultant children on other men, the genetics of the issue don't change in the least. Memory-holed they may be, but there are hundreds of stories on the internet involving children with odd numbers of grandparents.

    3. As far as horrific abuse is concerned: I've never met a non-black adult with electric iron scars (As in pressing the entire flat of the iron against the boy's back, chest, face, groin or thigh.) For all I know, non-black mothers are equally fond of turning their Oster(tm) up to nine and getting rid of their son's creases. But, I've inoculated hundreds of military personnel, performed fitness evaluation for dozens and taken barracks showers in the USA, Europe and Iraq. I've only seen those triangle-shaped scars on black men

Those differences between black and white women in full time work or labor force participation aren't very large though.

If those figures are accurate then that doesn't seem to explain the effects were talking about.

Please keep in mind that we aren’t talking about white and black women having the same income, we are talking about white and black women having the same income when they come from equal income parents.

Comparing net worth might be more insightful than comparing income, or perhaps some combination of the two, the way SES combines income, job status, and highest educational level achieved.

Income is cash flow; net worth is cash flowed ... in and not flowed back out. Net worth takes into account the ability to live within your means and plan for the future.

Yes, but Chetty isn't denying that there is likely to be a gap in test scores between black and white women when matching for parental income. One would expect that white women from the 90th+ percentile in parental income have some degree of higher IQs than black women from the same demographic, as do the white men vs black men. Yet, white women don't translate their cognitive advantage into any wage per hour advantage.

HBD-awareness is a function of living around other humans. We’re not all the same, and everyone has noticed that. We’re all HBD-aware.

HBD-awareness is the default state. It is countered by propaganda that, when the biodiversity relates to race, (1) our conclusions are based on observation of samples that are too small, (2) the samples have been contaminated (by racism, natch), and (3) it’s morally wrong to notice things that are at odds with the prevailing dogma.

The reason black women's earnings are so high compared to white women is that they are more likely to be full time workers.

This is turn is likely driven by the higher rates of marriage among whites.

    https://www.bls.gov/opub/reports/race-and-ethnicity/2015/home.htm

56.2% of white women are in the labor force, compared to 59.7% of black women. (For men, it is 69.7% for white men vs. 63.8% for black men.)

    https://www.bls.gov/cps/cpsaat08.htm

Of women who do work, about 75% of white women work full time, compared to 80% of black women. (In comparison, 88% of white men who work do so full time vs 86% of black men.)

Also, if you look at the graphs presented in the NYT article, it appears the earnings distribution for black men is very similar to black women, with the men just a bit lower. So from a race realist point of view, black men and women show roughly equal regression to the mean.

The real outlier is white women, whose earnings are low. But this is explained by their lower rates of full time work.

Most of what Chetty has uncovered isn't politically correct. I've learned a lot from his research.

True but unless I’m getting posts mixed up I think my point was not that Chetty was lying, it was that there was politically interested coordination, and that privacy protections are a bad joke, especially in the hands of the same government intertwined into Google and Facebook.
Also I wanted to clarify I’m not saying that Chetty stole the laptops (Negroponte did). The point is that the data is out there, and here it is being used to sell chocolate-covered cotton.

And forgive me for pointing out the Claude Allen's son could be called a 'chip off the same block'!

Arrested: Claude Alexander Allen III, 20, faces charges for the murder of Michael Phillip Harvey, 25, in the woods near the Allen family home

Arrested: Claude Alexander Allen III, 20, has admitted to a disagreement with Michael Phillip Harvey, 25, over 'controlled dangerous substances sales'

The son of a former aide to President George W. Bush has been charged with murdering a man with a hatchet at his home.

Claude Alexander Allen III, 20, was arrested on Friday by police after they found the body of Michael Phillip Harvey, 25, in the woods near the Allen family home in Gaithersburg, Maryland.

Records show that the home is owned by Allen's father, Claude A. Allen, a former Bush domestic policy adviser who pleaded guilty to theft in 2006.

They seem to claim they have data for 94% of the children they started with and they do have a separate file with everyone’s social security number. The sleight of hand with the data is basically in that they focus on everyone’s individual income rather than household income. The paper concedes that blacks and whites have different rates of marriage, even within the same income percentile. Thus, household income is different between white women and black women even when adjusted for parental income, and while Chetty dismisses the explanation of income differences as due to innate aptitude differences, he doesn’t really address the concept that the differences in household structure could also be due to differences in innate preferences.

The whole study does perhaps indicate that willingness to follow rules over time matters more than aptitude for life outcomes, at least with affirmative action in place.

What's the upshot of all this, then?

What’s the upshot of all this, then?

The upshot is that while there are many people able to shoot big holes in The Official Story, our knowledge will die with us because TPTB control the Narrative.

Look at how jealously and viciously the Social Media mavens shut down apostates, or indeed anyone who suggests anything politically ‘inconvenient’. Try and poke holes in the Narrative on MSM sites (the few which still permit commentary). You’ll be shut down even faster.

UNZ.COM could vanish tomorrow–and it will vanish some day–and there won’t even be a mention of it in the MSM, where 95% of people get their notions of reality.

No, I’m not going to go hang myself because it’s hopeless, but I do believe I’ll enjoy a beverage.

They don't, they just don't do much worse than their parents like black boys do.

Oh, I see, thanks. They are still using the unfalsifiable. Despite how black girls did, racism hurts black boys. If black girls did similarly poorly, it would have been racism against both. The old ad hoc hypothesis.

The odd thing is, as sure as people are that this proves racism, you could use the same logic to demonstrate the opposite – since it didn’t affect black girls in the same way, it mustn’t be racism!
